Actor Griffin Dunne improves a bit on his first film as a director, Addicted to Love, with this drama-comedy about a family of witches. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock play spell-casting sisters of different temperaments: the former is a high-living, free-spirited sort, while Bullock's character is a homebody who can't get around a family curse that kills the men in their lives. A widowed single mom, Bullock gets into a jam with an abusive Bulgarian (Goran Visnjic) and is helped out by her sibling, but the result brings a good-looking, warm, inquisitive cop (Aidan Quinn) into their lives. The film has a variety of tonal changes--cute, scary, glum--that Dunne can't always effectively juggle. But the female-centric, celebratory nature of the film (the fantasies, the sharing, the witchy bonds) is infectious, and supporting roles by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as Kidman and Bullock's magical aunts are a lot of fun. --Tom Keogh

Not completly correct with certain concepts of Witchcraft but the closest Hollywood has gotten........2007-08-30
I love this movie. Despite myself practiceing the craft and this movie being slightly wrong about some certain concepts, overall it's damn good for Hollywood. We don't kill people or bring them back from the dead, or even mess with people's lives. But the overall concept in the movie was correct. Do see this movie even if you are a Witch or not. It's awesome.
Skip this movie.......2007-08-05
You're better off going to the library and checking out the book version of Practical Magic, a truly delightful book filled with interesting characters about love, and sisters.
This movie on the other hand is a psuedo-feminist typical dull chick flick devoid of the magic and beauty of the book it's based on.
They took all the good stuff out like the relationship between one of the characters daughters, and her trying to flee her aunts so they could lead a normal life, or the science teacher and filled it with high fructose corn syrup cornness. For the real better story, just read the book instead.
Magic is right!!!.......2007-08-01
I love this movie! It gives witchcraft a great view. It's the story of two orphaned sisters who were born into a family of witches. Through the good times and bad, the magic of family, love, and yes, witchcraft prevails!
There's a little witch in all of us, as Aunt Jet would say.......2007-07-20
This is such a beautifully, well-written movie. You really believe Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are sisters, and descendants of witches at that. I fell in love with their home (which by the way was not a real Victorian home but a shell). Trying to replicate the home on the Sims2Exchange but without decent blueprints, you need a wee bit of magic to create it. After viewing on TV, I had to buy the DVD. It's romantic but not mushy romantic. Any movie with Sandra Bullock in it is worth watching. She is such a versatile actress. So gather your love ones around you and prepare to be enchanted in a practical magic sort of way.
So Magical.......2007-07-12
I loved this movie. Anything with magic I love. Sandra Bullock, and Nicole Kidman does an excellent job playing as two sisters who are modern day witches. It's just magical, I love it!!!!

Actress-writer-director Ida Lupino got one of her unfortunately rare opportunities behind a camera making this 1966 family comedy about two mischievous students (Hayley Mills, June Harding) making life difficult for the nuns at a girls' convent school. Rosalind Russell has a fine part as a mother superior vexed by their pranks and outwardly chilly until the girls catch her in a more private moment of emotional release. The script has an anecdotal structure--it's sort of one thing after another with Mills's and Harding's troublemakers--but there is a rising sense that these two kids gradually develop some awareness of the pain and sacrifices of others. A fun and touching movie all around, with a nice twist at the end. --Tom Keogh
Description
Hayley Mills and June Harding act up in this affectionate comedy as two juvenile pranksters at the St. Francis Academy for Girls. It is up to Rosalind Russell, starring as the patient and understanding Mother Superior, to show them the right path. Starring Rosalind Russell and Hayley Mills.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth watching.......2007-08-22
The Trouble with Angels is a fine movie, well worth your time despite being offered in a full screen format. Lupino does an excellent job in directing, and she handles the comedy with a soft touch. Nowadays juvenile comedy is done with such exaggeration and explosive special effects that any snse of realism is destroyed. For instance, in the 1998 version of "the Parent Trap" (which I liked) the trap one twin plays on another in the camp bunk room is so elaborate and sophisticated only the concerted effort of a big budget special effects team could have thought and constructed such an effort. The trouble Mills gets into is much more realistic. We don't get long scenes of Rosalind Russell chewing out the troublemakers. We usually just see them doing dishes as punishment. Lupino doesn't need to beat us over the head to make a point. Gradually we get to see what really motivates the characters, nuns and students alike. Mills and Russell are excellent in their roles, and play with understatement. The Catholic faith is also shown in a positive light, and the call to vocation is also presented in a good light. As others have commented, women are presented in a positive light, while men for the most part are not. Mother Superior would like to kick Mills out of the boarding school, but keeps her because she would rather not have Mills exposed to her uncle, who is a playboy who uses women. I was really much more impressed with this movie than I thought I would be. The acting by almnost all the characters was superior, and the motivations and plot developed gradually. Too bad the Catholic church got rid of it nun's habits and traditions, and substituted horrible services and music. Today it seems stuck in the hippy-ish 60s after abandoning centuries of tradition!

After the critical success of 1993's The Secret Garden, Warner Bros. returned to the novels of Frances Hodgson Burnett to create this 1995 adaptation of A Little Princess, which instantly ranked with The Secret Garden as one of the finest children's films of the 1990s. Neither film was a huge box-office success, but their quality speaks for itself, and A Little Princess has all the ingredients of a timeless classic. A marvel of production design, the film features lavish sets built almost entirely on a studio backlot in Burbank, California. The story opens in New York just before the outbreak of World War I, when young Sara (Liesel Matthews) is enrolled in private boarding school while her father goes off to war. Under the domineering scrutiny of the school's wicked headmistress, Miss Minchen (Eleanor Bron), Sara quickly becomes popular with her schoolmates, but fate intervenes and she soon faces a stern reversal of fortune, resorting to wild flights of fancy to cope with an unexpectedly harsh reality. Rather than label her fanciful tales as escapist fantasy, A Little Princess actively encourages a child's power of imagination--a power that can be used to learn, grow, and adapt to a world that is often cruel and difficult. It's also one of the most visually beautiful films of the '90s and creates a fully detailed world within the boarding school--a place where imagination is vital to survival. A first-class production in every respect, this is one family film that should (if it's not too stuffy to say it) be considered required viewing for parents and kids alike. --Jeff Shannon
Description
The beloved story from the author of the Secret Garden becomes 1995's best reviewed film. A young girl must rely on her wits and imagination when she is separated from her soldier father and sent to a strict boarding school. A means of losing yourself to daydreams .......2007-09-08
I have absolutely adored this film since I first saw it at the age of 8, and it thus holds that special place in my mind, as a sort of magical and daydreamy tale. Upon renting it again recently, I was pleased to find that the cinematography still remained impressive and the stylization and story still highly engaging. Though it may be a tad overacted,I think the general message of the story still shines through. I imagine that it's not solely about deserving to be a "bratty princess", but more about building a sense of personal self-worth and realising that everyone is entitled to be treated as, well, a human being, regardless of form or status.
I personally would not listen to the naysayers, whom are namely book purists, and unable to appreciate the film in and of itself, as opposed to just a "butchered" extension of the book; as if simply reading a novel entitles you to suddenly become an expert on anything whatsoever. Please look past the minute differences in detail and recognize the film for its worth on its own.
great.......2007-07-30
A great movie in great condition. A must see for all girls regardless of age.
My daughter's favorite movie - one year & counting.......2007-07-18
My daughter started watching this movie when she was almost 5 and it instantly became her favorite movie. For days on end she watched it everyday while all her Disney Princess movies collected dust. She was just so fascinated with "Sarah", the Little Princess and by the time she turned 6 she had memorized all the lines. I highly recommend this movie for little girls. It's beautiful and timeless!
A True Classic!.......2007-07-02
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie, set in nineteenth century America.
Lisel Matthews renders a stirring performance as the only daughter of a wealthy military officer. Spirited, intelligent, and highly imaginative, Sara Crewe must deal with living in a foreign country,(her native country is India), adapting to a strict school run by stern school marme Miss Minchin (Eleanor Bron),and handling the deployment of her father, whom she loves dearly, into active combat during WW2. How Sarah manages, while keeping her humor and her dignity is what makes this revised version so enjoyable. I actually enjoyed it more than the original, starring Shirley Temple(1939). But the best reason for watching it, is the message it has infused into my daughters psyches', the idea that they are both princesses! This is a true classic.
I love this movie I watch it all the time. Thank you Amazon!!!.......2007-06-02

Attempting to do for Westerns what his Guns of Navarone had done for World War II action epics, director J. Lee Thompson crafted Mackenna's Gold as a lavish, absurdly ambitious variation on Erich Von Stroheim's Greed, resulting in a last-gasp Western so eager to encompass the genre's traditions that it turns into a big, silly, wildly entertaining mess. Gregory Peck surely had more serious intentions when he signed on, and he brings prestigious gravitas to his glum role as Marshall Mackenna, who gets shanghaied into searching for the gold-filled canyon of an elusive Apache legend. The rest of the 1969 film labors to undermine Peck's respectable demeanor; how else to explain Omar Sharif as a Mexican villain, Julie Newmar as a hot-blooded Apache temptress (with underwater nude scenes that were celebrated in Playboy magazine), and a jaw-dropping finale that's so ridiculous it's impressive in spite of itself?
Formerly blacklisted screenwriter Carl Foreman and composer Dimitri Tiomkin joined up to coproduce the film, and one can only imagine how Anthony Mann or Howard Hawks might've handled Foreman's sensible script. Thompson goes for scenic splendor, heavy action, and heavier emotions, casting everything at a fever pitch that's wildly enjoyable without betraying his "serious" intentions. A stable of Hollywood veterans (Eli Wallach, Raymond Massey, Edward G. Robinson, and others) appear in lively supporting roles--they're all dispatched in a garish Apache ambush--and Camilla Sparv is an ingénue with plenty of fighting attitude. Gold fever reaches its peak, along with some awesome special effects, and divine intervention reaches new heights of intensity. Top it off with José Feliciano's theme song, and you'll be in zany Western heaven. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
McKenna's Gold.......2007-08-22
As a long time loyal fan of Gregory Peck, this movie does not stand up to his others. The acting is sluggish, the plot predictable, the ending is
sadly "corny". Peck does the best of all the actors and actresses. Camilla Sparv gives a very lukewarm performance. This is definately NOT a family film.
Peck fans will find "Big Country" as real Western Classic, with all the wonderful music, scenery and excellent story western fans look for.
Round up at central casting or How to end your career with Lurch........2007-07-16
This was harder to take than spam on hardtack, scarier than Omen, a sand duster beyond belief. No wonder Eastwood rode off with spaghetti westerns by himself. This crew was trapped in a blind canyon trying to avoid every John Wayne cliche and remain serious. Forget it. Even Frank, Sammy and Dean couldn't save this one. The apaches snuck up at the 4th campfire meeting, and made off with the real script. When the likes of Raymond Massey, Lee J. Cobb and Edward G. Robinson ask to be killed off before they reach Montana and the director agrees, there's no reason to continue. The best thing about this yarn of no similarity to the legend of "Adams Diggings," is the gorgeous rocky landscape. But still J. Lee Thompson insists on adding "Garden of Evil" matte shots here and there that add seconds of excitement to its crawling pace. Then Eli Wallach shows up and you hope he ropes you out of the audience or executes you along with the senior citizens of central casting. Not to happen. There's no escaping the depressing Sodom and Gamorrah finale that hopes to bury any memory of watching this. From the outset of this mess, every time the diminutive Omar Sharif looks up to the towering Gregory Peck and threatens him with desert eyes and Cisco Kid ridiculousness,it portends disaster ahead. You best skip this and just google the real "Adams Diggings." If you believe apache gold is found like cheese slices on a canyon wall, then you might like this before seeing your army recruiter.
A western that could only be made in the 60's.......2007-07-16
Psychedelic camerawork, panoramic vistas, a Quincy Jones avant garde western score, Atticus Finch himself, Gregory Peck, Dr. Zhivago-Omar Sharif passing himself off as a Mexican bandito, Lurch-Ted Cassidy as an Indian, a pre-Kojak Telly Savalas, and "My Living Doll/Catwoman" Julie Newmar make for one of the strangely cast westerns of all time. Add to that the inspired casting of some of the best character actors to ever grace the silver screen (Eli Wallach, Burgess Meredith, Edward G. Robinson, Anthony Gayle, Raymond Massey, Keenan Wynn, Lee J. Cobb, to cite a few, and you have one GROOVY western...long on credits, short on plot, but still worth a look!
I know this place. It's Shaking Rock..no gold around there.......2007-06-28
Gregory Peck and some of the biggest names in the movie industry saddle up in search of the 'Lost Adams' or 'Canyon del Oro' mine. This is one action packed western. Jose Feliciano's `Old Turkey Buzzard' plays background score to scenic desert cinematography as everyone rides off in search of gold. Just keep in mind that the film was shot in 1969 and so to my knowledge has no CGI's (Computer-generated imagery). There are some modeling and interesting editing in some of the action shots (crossing the bridge sequence, etc). Look past this and enjoy the adventure as gold fever strikes everyone in this very entertaining movie. Wonderful panoramic visual treats combined with a great story make this a must for action and western lovers. Well worth the ride to Shaking Rock.
Great Western.......2007-06-27
MacKenna's Gold is a great old color western about a hunt for a canyon of treasure. Well known actors and a great story that holds your attention.

Deceptive Sales Tactic - No Widescreen Versions.......2007-06-22
The movies are great, but these reviews are also about the product itself and this Double Feature product sucks because it says it contains the Widescreen versions of the films, but it does not - it only has the full screen versions. If you're a big DVD buff, this will not be good enough for you as it was not for me!
Fullscreen Only.......2007-06-14
Despite the claims on the packaging that this includes both widescreen and fullscreen versions of each film, it only includes the fullscreen versions.
With as visual of a director as Cuaron, "A Little Princess" should only be seen in its original unmodified presentation. Seek out the individual releases for each of these instead, to get them in their proper aspect ratio.
A Girl's Treasures.......2007-01-10
A Little Princess and the Secret Garden have been favorites in our family for a while. My daughter wore out the video tapes when she was in elementary school. She is now 21. I bought this CD set so we can keep them in the family because my other daughter (8yrs old) loves them as well.
I must say A Little Princess is my all time favorite that I still watch with my youngest daughter and I still cry at the end when Papa cries out for his daughter...SARA!!!
Love it.......2006-08-30
I loved these movies as a young girl, myself and have watched them many times already. Also, fast shipping and what a great deal in cost!
A Little Princess is a Royal Gem.......2006-08-29
I first saw this movie in the theaters with my then 5-yr-old daughter. The movie is a rich mixture of adventure, fun, despair, imagination and love. The movie is visually amazing, the early 20th century brought vividly to life. The score is perfectly composed to heighten the rollercoaster of emotions evoked by Cuaron's story.
I recently watched this movie again with my now 16 year old daughter, and I have a renewed appreciation for this movie. The cinematography, the score, the absolutely awesome cast, make this easily one of the best family movies of all time.
Every father with a daguther should see this movie... it will draw you closer to one another, give her a life affirming message, and entertain you both.

Charming and frequently hilarious, IFC Films' Camp is like Fame for the musical-theater set. It's set at Camp Ovation, a summer retreat for budding actors and singers who chant Stephen Sondheim's "Losing My Mind" on their bus rather than "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall." Into this environment comes a--gasp!--straight male, Vlad (Daniel Letterle), who turns upside down the lives of wallflower Ellen (Joanna Chilcoat), cross-dressing Michael (Robin DeJesus), and instructor Bert Hanley (Don Dixon), a frustrated one-hit-wonder composer. Camp was written and directed by Todd Graff, himself a Broadway veteran, based on his experiences at New York's musical camp Stagedoor Manor (which was attended by Natalie Portman and Robert Downey Jr., among others). The characters are a bit thin and the plot somewhat predictable, but the musical numbers are a lot of fun--older tunes are mixed with originals by Stephen Trask (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Michael Gore (Fame), and Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Seussical the Musical)--and fans of musicals will love the many inside jokes, especially those relating to Sondheim. --David Horiuchi
Description
An extremely talented young cast shines in this "energetic musical romp" (Los Angeles Times)about a drama camp where the outcasts of today hone their skills to become the stars of tomorrow. Packed with romance, laughs and "genuine showstopping musical numbers" (The Washington Post), Camp is a "Blast of exuberant fun" (Rolling Stone)! Every summer, talented kids with big voices and even bigger dreams flock to Camp Ovation. But this year, a sexy new guy, Vlad (DanielLetterle), is not only stealing the show he's stealing the heart of every girl he encounters. And as the biggest day of camp approaches, the young performers must overcome backstabbing, unrequited love and Vlad's unpredictable libido to pull off the greatest show of their careers!

it was ok.......2007-07-19
there wasn't enough goodness for me to like it too much
it was an OK movie and i'm glad i rented it for 1.99 instead of buying it for 10 bucks
i liked michael :] he looked hot as a woman
OMG - Its Stephen Sondheim.......2007-05-24
Good film, definately what performance camps are like - thousands of gay boys and the girls who love them. And then, OMG - Its Stephen Sondheim! If you're into musical theatre AT ALL, check out this film.
Camp the Movie.......2007-03-09
I love the movie, I always have. It's played so seldom on television, I almost forgot about it until I got a recommendation from Amazon - I had no idea Daniel Letterle was 23 at the time of filming. Great Buy, thanks!
A MUST FOR EVERY THEATRE KID OUT THERE! THESPIANS MUST SEE THIS!.......2007-01-29
This movie touched me far more than FAME did when I was a teenager just aching to move from Muscle Shoals, Alabama to New York City to be the greatest Broadway Musical Director in the World. The screenwriters and composers have a grasp of teen angst that is remarkable, fresh, honest, sweet, heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE...I was blessed to accidently recieve tickets to the WORLD PREMIERE of this talented team's brand new AMAZING musical "THIRTEEN" in Los Angeles in December. What a stunning cast, great concept..in my opinion, a far more finished, tighter, thoroughly wonderful new concept for musical theatre for all ages. This one will be performed more than "High School Musical" when the word gets out. The dancing reminded me of the Disney knock-out, but the acting, and singing of these amazing kids just blew the too-perfect Disney production right out of the water. I'm watching for each of the kids to be superstars! Oh that my musical I am working on gets such a great treatment! And that I can work with kids, cast, crew so amazing. Watch CAMP, then FIND 13, and relive the best and worst of your youth. Should be required of all 12 year olds...AND THEIR PARENTS!!!
A must see..........2007-01-26
This is a great movie and you can't go wrong in buying it!!!

They've tried Catzilla, a feline so ferocious it can't be euthanized. They've tried booby traps that Rube Goldberg would marvel at. They've even tried Caesar (hilariously played by Christopher Walken), a demented exterminator whose "Squeak Seeker 2000" mouse-cam will infiltrate even the cleverest rodent's secret lair. But the Smuntz brothers Ernie (Nathan Lane) and Lars (British comedian Lee Evans) just can't win against the tenacious mouse that wreaks havoc in the vintage home they've inherited from their father. That's the one-note premise of this chaotic, lavishly produced comedy that starts on a high note and never lets up, eventually leaving the viewer exhausted. The special mouse effects (live-action, animatronic, and computer-generated) are delightful, and the slapstick is frequently ingenious, but the title says it all in a movie that is little more than an elaborate variation of Home Alone. A prime choice for family fun, but it's really just a live-action cartoon that overstays its welcome. It's harmless fun if all you're looking for is a marathon of slapstick gags and pratfalls, and it's notable as the final film appearance of veteran character actor William Hickey, who died in June of 1997, shortly after filming of Mouse Hunt was completed. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
A TRIBUTE TO WILLIAM HICKEY........2007-07-29
This was William (Bill) Hickey's last film. He died shortly after its filming. As one of our best actors of stage, TV and film (remember him in Prizzi's Honor? - he played Prizzi), as well as a renowned teacher of acting, I was so pleased and moved to see at the film's end that it was dedicated to his memory.
Ironically, Hickey's role is of the dying father dispensing advice to his two idiotic sons. You can see that he himself is ill, but I believe he used that to create his last masterful performance.
If you like slapstick, this is your movie. I imagine kids would like it a lot. There's lots of action, a wonderful mouse who outsmarts everyone, and Christopher Walken is great as a bumbling but very serious mouse exterminator. Guess who wins out?
The two starts of the film, Nathan Lane and Lee Evans, give perfect performances. Also Vicki Lewis, as one of the brother's wives, is outstanding.
A series of mice were probably used in the filming, but the level on which they were trained and perform is really awesome. I really got a kick out of him (them?). And indeed it is a very handsome mouse - looks like a show mouse to me.
As I say, if you are a fan of slapstick, this is your film!
It's like a Cartoon Come to Life.......2007-07-01
Director Gore Verbinski (The Mexican, The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Weather Man) has quite a way with slapstick. I wish he would do more comedies, because this is tons of fun.
People compare it to Home Alone, but it doesn't have that film's pathos, which is fine. Mouse Hunt is more similar to Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, and the Warner Brothers cartoons of the 1940's.
Two adult brothers, both down on their luck, inherit an old house that turns out to be valuable. But there's a mouse occupying the place, and the two men want to get rid of it. Not so simple a task, because this particular mouse is resourceful and clever.
You can't help but root for the mouse. There are times when you actually are scared for the poor little guy. He even sleeps in a little mouse bed made out of a small box and cotton. But he's very formidable.
If you or your family have enjoyed the physical comedy of Home Alone, then this is right up your alley. And the production design is great, especially the old factory and the decaying house, with its mouse tunnels and passageways.
My only quam is that the movie is too long at 98 minutes. It drags in the third act, and could've been edited down to 75 minutes. But that's no big deal.
Pest in control.......2007-06-16
For the longest time, live action comedies with animals usually feature dogs. But by the 1990s, robots and computer effects had advanced to the point that the two funniest animal comedies featured a pig and a mouse. This was the less famous of the two, but is every bit as good. The story is simple; two brothers inherit a mansion and try to spruce it up for an auction. Unfortunately for them, a mouse inhabits the mansion and counters their every move. Their game of cat-and-mouse ends with the mansion being destroyed. The movie is a comedy, and like all good comedies, it examines a fundamental human flaw, in this case greed. The greed of the two brothers, their families, and of the various individuals who want to buy their mansion. The mouse itself looks quite real, even in the close-up shots. The style of comedy is a combination of old-fashion slapstick, wry British dialogue, and the occasional dirty joke. But overall, the entire movie is suitable for all ages.
Some notable things about this movie. First, it was the first big outing for Gore Verbinski, who would go on to make Pirates of the Caribbean. Second, one cannot spot a single brand name in this movie. Only one other movie has such a distinction; Dick Tracy. And like Dick Tracy, the viewer really cannot guess the decade in which this movie takes place. For sure it happened in the 20th century, since a television, radio, and automobiles are present. But the dress, hairstyle and even language are nondescript. This movie is fun to watch, and a piece of art; I highly recommend it.
Mouse Hunt.......2007-04-05
Mouse Hunt is one very funny movie. The mouse in this movie is well trained for it's comedy skits. This a must see comedy......
Mouse Hunt.......2007-04-03
This movie is great escape footage....I could watch it 20 more times. It mirrors life in that sometimes it's the little, ridiculous things that can bring us down....the lesson: learn to live with it or just let it go if you can't change something....but in the mean time, have a good laugh while two bumbling guys face the challenge of their lives in one little mouse!

If you can stifle the urge to laugh at its pastel unisex costumes and futuristic shopping-mall décor, this extravagant science fiction film from 1976 is still visually fascinating and provocatively entertaining. Set in the year 2274, when ecological disaster has driven civilization to the protection of domed cities, the story revolves around a society that holds a ceremonial death ritual for all citizens who reach the age of 30. In a diseaseless city where free sex is encouraged and old age is virtually unknown, Logan (Michael York) is a "sandman," one who enforces this radical method of population control (but he's about to turn 30 and he doesn't want to die). Escaping from the domed city via a network of underground passages, Logan is joined by another "runner" named Jessica (Jenny Agutter), while his former sandman partner (Richard Jordan) is determined to terminate Logan's rebellion. Using a variety of splendid matte paintings and miniatures, Logan's Run earned a special Oscar for visual effects (images of a long-abandoned Washington, D.C., are particularly impressive), and in addition to fine performances by Jordan and Peter Ustinov, the film features '70s poster babe Farrah Fawcett in a cheesy supporting role. Jerry Goldsmith's semi-electronic score is still one of the prolific composer's best, and Logan's Run remains an interesting example of '70s sci-fi that preceded Star Wars by less than a year. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Lame take-off from the book.......2007-08-26
Sorry, but since "Logan's Run" is one of my all-time favorite books, I was really disappointed in this rendition of it. Certainly you can't expect filmmakers to "film the book," but when a book is this special, you want the movie to be so, too. Michael York is just too old and Jenny Agutter, though a wonderful actress, just didn't fit in Jessica's skin. Though I saw the film back in the '70s and now have a copy of it, try as I might, I just can't seem to get past how it botches my vision of this fabulous book. Read the book! An extraordinary, visionary tale!
Logan's Run is a stunning retro-futuristic classic........2007-06-08
Film about population & resource control in a future post-war setting.
Cool retro-futuristic sets; definitely 70's style fashion and decor. Great actors, they're all easy to identify with and are believable in their roles. I can put this movie on frequently and enjoy it every time; there aren't any lulls in the plot or "unnecessary fluff." I haven't read the book, from what I hear the movie leaves out/changes details- But if you haven't read the book, you obviously aren't going to miss it and it's still very enjoyable. It makes you want to read the book afterward to hear more about the world of Logan's Run.
I've heard this film compared to "The Island," which I have also seen. I really think Island is more like "Coma" with Michael Douglas.
Logan's Run is mainly about population/resource control out of necessity to maintain humanity, while "The Island" and "Coma" are about Money/Greed by showing how far people will go to live longer and what business'll do to make it possible for those that can afford it.
In Island & Coma, the motivation for keeping the 'secluded world of clones' is not for survival as much as the chase for immortality and the resultant immoral lengths people take to attain it.
Logan's Run is about the chase of truth and freedom, to escape from their isolated dome world to discover a deserted, isolated earth. Though they are killed at 30, it is humane in contrast to the mutilation of those in Coma/Island.
Good fashion with out-dated effect.......2007-05-13
Can be considered a good movie in the 80s but special effect is too dated. I felt that the fashion sense is stylish though some people may disagree. The transportation and gun look fake. Still watchable but cannot compared to modern science fiction movie.
Logan's Run.......2007-05-07
I enjoyed the movie! I saw it when it first came out when I was a teen. I remembered it , but not the details, so it was nice to see it again. It was interesting to see how they perceived the future to be.
Good classic sci-fi flick.......2007-03-20
Good film. Dated though and the picture quality needs to be remastered. The acting is superb and no doubt lifts the film. They were so believable! If you love sci-fi flicks this one is a must.

Great way to emphasize manners to your kids.......2007-07-23
My 4yo daughter and 6yo son enjoyed watching the whole DVD. It was an easy way as a parent to reinforce manners without harassing them. Great edutainment and a good reminder for parents to set the example and use their manners too! Also, it was great when my daughter wanted a toy and I reminded her about the "Gimmies" and she was quiet after that!!
Great for Toddlers!.......2007-02-07
My daughter loves to watch the Berenstain Bears. They are hard to find on TV, so this video is great. It plays coninuously, so it is great for the car too.

High school cheerleader Nina Deer (Elisha Cuthbert) seems like the ultimate bitch in The Quiet. When Paul and Olivia Deer (Martin Donovan and Edie Falco) invite their deaf and mute godchild, Dot (Camilla Belle) to live with the family following the death of Dot's father, Nina plays Dot's evil stepsister. Dot silently persists as household dynamics unfold nightmarishly around her, revealing an unsavory affair that leaves the mother reaching for her bottle of painkillers. The more Nina reveals her secret fantasy to Dot, however, the more Dot feels compelled to step in. Director Jamie Babbit's film is rich with sexual confusion and sick psychology, making The Quiet surprisingly complex. Though Elisha Cuthbert's performance is strong, it is still a slowly paced film, and the sets, like dark, moody blue rooms in the Deer house, add unneeded melodrama. Still, The Quiet is a thriller about teen girls bonded to commit a heinous crime, and many will appreciate this variation on the tale of young female chivalry against monstrosity. --Trinie Dalton
Product Description
This erotic and suspenseful tale of sex, lies and betrayal stars Elisha Cuthbert (The Girl Next Door) as Nina Deer, a pretty cheerleader whose life is turned upside-down by the arrival of her parents' godchild Dot (Camilla Belle), a deaf and mute girl recently orphaned by her father's death. Although Nina looks upon Dot's deafness with disdain, her family and friends develop a strange attraction to her, and Dot soon becomes a sounding board for everyone's heaviest burdens. But when Nina becomes convinced that Dot is hiding a few secrets of her own, she decides to confess a family secret so disturbing, it cannot be ignored. Also starring Martin Donovan and Edie Falco (TV's The Sopranos).

Not What You'd Expect.......2007-09-15
At first glance, "The Quiet" appears to be the same pseudo-psychological thriller starring the hottest cast of teenagers around. It's actually quite far from that. It's a film that's part John Waters part David Lynch, but without the class of the latter and the humor of former. It's unlike anything that I've seen in this kind of film for a long time. It stars the super-talented Camilla Belle as Dot, a deaf and mute girl who is taken in by her godparents (Martin Donovan & Edie Falco) when her father dies. Her new sister Nina (Elisha Cuthbert), a beautiful, 17-year-old cheerleader hates her. Because of her problems, Dot is immediately labeled a freak and social outcast. It's clear, obvious really, from the beginning that Dot is hiding a secret or two. Same with Nina, although it doesn't take you long to figure out exactly what's going on with that. Now this is a twisted film that isn't aimed at the teenage audience most of these films are aimed at. It's looking for an adult audience as it deals with a lot of sexual topics (indeed, 75% of the dialogue is sexual in nature), incest, murder, and a whole jubilee of other weird stuff. One thing "The Quiet" captures well is the way teenagers talk. Sex is a touchy subject among teenagers in movies, while sex here is completely unhibited. A lot of the dialouge though is stuff that teenagers think and wouldn't actually say. "The Quiet" could have been a bigger hit with critics (with this subject matter, it would've never been a box-office hit) if the material was handled better. This is familar material, but it's not usually handled in major motion pictures...And the writers have clearly been watching too many soap operas. Falco, a talented actress, as Nina's mother is the stereotypical pill-popping mother we see in at least 10 movies each year. Donovan, as the father, seems to have based his performance upon Stellan Skarsgaard in "The Glass House" and it's not a stretch to say Falco seems to have got inspiration from Diane Lane in that same film. "The Quiet" does stray away from other stereotypes like the "happy ending." The bad guys essentially get away in this film...But it makes a lot of mistakes along the way and many "serious" scenes border on parody. The director messed up too by filming a few scenes here-and-there with a different camera, giving it a cheap straight-to-video look. "The Quiet" will surprise you when you pop it in and find out it's not the sister-sequel to "When a Stranger Calls" and then they'll be pissed when they don't know if they're supposed to be shocked or crying with laughter.

Depressing but engrossing.......2007-08-09
Dot (Camilla Belle), an introverted deaf/mute girl moves in with her godparents after her dad gets killed. Not a welcome change to her new godsister, Nina (Elisha Cuthbert), who wants nothing to do with this "freak" at home or school, where she is a popular cheerleader. Dot tries to keep to herself, but she soon becomes a confession magnet due to her deafness to those who feel the need to get things off their chest to someone, but without the repercussions of revealing their secrets. Unfortunately for pretty much everyone in this movie, nothing is as it seems, and their actions lead to events that will tragically change the lives of those involved.
This is defintely one of those movies where you will thank your lucky stars if you have even a semblance of a good family life after watching. Dark, colorless and depressing to be sure, but surreally beautiful at the same time. Performances are excellent from all involved, particularly Belle's demure turn and Cuthbert, who has successfully increased her skills since the shaky 24 days.
A Stinker!.......2007-07-26
This movie was so obviously a stinker. Hey guys, were we watching the same movie?? Between the virtually non-existent plot to the incredibly poor acting this movie just never got off the ground for me. Like some of the other reviewers, I was attracted to the movie because of Elisha Cuthbert who is stunning and can act (I loved her work in the 24 series) However, even her dialogue is purile in this bomb. While these themes could have been the basis for an interesting movie, it fails in almost every respect. I am being generous with the one star.
Disturbing Story: Extremely Well Made Movie.......2007-07-20
Now this is one of the sickest and most disturbing storylines I've come across. But, if you fight your urges of disgust and sit through the whole movie and judge the movie, not the story, you'll realize what a powerful and extremely well made movie this is. This is sure to haunt you for weeks after watching. But that is testament to how well the movie is made.
Camilla Belle is simply awesome in portraying Dot. Elisha Cutbert also shows that she can indeed act (you'll know what I mean if you've seen her previous movies). You'll keep hearing the music of the movie long after it done. So please watch and enjoy this wonderful movie before judging it on it's creepy story. You'll talk about the quiet after the storm with your friends once you've watched this.
Quiet Desperation.......2007-06-25
"Nina Deer's life is infused with sex. At school, she is attached at the hip to her best friend Michelle, a girl who is seemingly unable to talk about anyone without announcing that she wants to "f*ck him," or demanding that know if Nina thinks he wants to do the same to her. At home, meanwhile, it's clear that Nina is being sexually abused by her father, a fact that dominates virtually every moment of her life. With Michelle, she plays the part of the easily-shocked, virginal friend." Martha Fischer
Dot, who is played by Camilla Belle, father dies, and she's left alone and sent to live with her godparents and their only child, Nina. Dot is deaf like her father, and also refuses to speak, and communicates through sign language and lip-reading. Nina is everything Dot isn't, she is blonde and popular. Her new sister is a nightmare. Not only will Dot not speak, but she is uninterested in engaging in the school structure. She wants to be alone, and is turned off by the mad rush around her. As she explains in a voice over, Dot is completely whole only when alone. Nina treats Dot with the same disgust with which she views both her parents and herself. Her father is sexually abusing her, and her mother, played by Edie Falco, is popping pills. Edie Falco does not need to take these kind of roles, she was sleepwalking throughout the film. It's not long before the silent girl becomes her confidant. Nina whispers sexually explicit stories in the middle of the school cafeteria, unburdening herself. "Telling Dot, she reasons, is like screaming herself raw in an empty room: No on hears but she feels better, if only for a moment." The tragedy of the film is that everything about the movie is slightly awry, and I was left with flat emotion.
"At times, it's difficult to watch The Quiet, because a group of actors are giving their all -- albeit entirely unsuccessfully -- to a small, possibly controversial film in which they clearly believe. Over and over again, I was reminded of the Bruce Willis disaster Color of Night, another film whose emotional power over its audience was horrendously overestimated by its creators. While The Quiet is by no means as bad as Color of Night, it shares with that film a tremendous seriousness about its own purpose, and a tragic misunderstanding of its relationship with an audience that, more often than not, is left laughing when it should be gasping." Susan Reid
I tried to find some redeeming qaulity in this film. "The Quiet" is a film that has been done before, and this film shows us that there is a fine line at times between a great film and one that tries too hard.
