The Pre-Fab Four are back, and severely earnest television journalist S.J. Krammerhead (Eric Idle) is hot on their story once again in The Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch. A welcome sequel to Monty Python star Idle's 1978 mockumentary The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash, Can't Buy Me Lunch looks back on the mythical Liverpool quartet's long and winding road. Meet anew the group's caustic leader Ron Nasty (Neil Innes), cute bassist Dirk McQuickley (Idle), quiet guitarist Stig O'Hara (Rikki Fataar), and lovable drummer Barry Womble (John Halsey) as they sprint from the Cavern Club through "A Hard Day's Rut," "Tragical History Tour" and beyond. Krammerhead combines new celebrity interviews (Conan O'Brien, Tom Hanks, Bonnie Raitt) with re-edited footage and outtakes from the first film, and while the result isn't as sharp or urgent as Idle's original parody, Can't Buy Me Lunch has many funny moments and good inside jokes for Beatles enthusiasts. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Almost as good!.......2007-03-08

I was expecting to be disappointed when I purchased Rutles 2, but it was almost as good as the original.

3 out of 5 stars Love The Rutles.......2007-03-08

A recap of the brilliant Beatles bio satire. Not much new here, it's for collectors only. For the uninitiated, get "The Rutles". The jokes are recalls & the whole thing is just a reminder that the first one is there.

I liked it, but it's a library item & I'd rather watch the original if the subject of "The Rutles" comes up. Like all satire, if you've not seen the first one, it won't make much sense. In that, if you're not well educated in Beatles bio, you'll miss the subtle humor. It's kind of a British "Spinal Tap" and came several years years before "Tap" did.

Musicians & Beatle-O-Files should see "The Rutles" (the first one), it's very funny & has "Cool-Cool-Daddy-O" cameos including Beatle George who helped finance the Monty Python guys.

I also recommend "The Concert For George" on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Still Fun, but ..........2007-02-21

If you're a die-hard Rutles fan like I am, you'll enjoy this "retrospective" sequel to "All You Need Is Cash".

While the production values aren't quite up to the standard set by the original, it's still a lot of fun.

I miss the look of film, which is substituted with video in this one.

2 out of 5 stars Very, very disappointing........2007-01-30

I must echo the other reviews here by stating that this movie was a really sad attempt at whatever it was they were attempting. Rehashed jokes mixed with rehashed footage, sparked up with a handful of inconsistent and generally sluggish interviews with modern artists.

It seems almost like Idle went at this with no script, rounded up whoever was available, and took a friend with a camcorder out on a long weekend to do the filming. I can only assume that the shots of Idle in Paris, New York, Hawaii and other locations around the world were shot during downtime on a tour, as the budget of this video obviously wasn't enough to afford a lighting technician, much less a world tour.

Uninspired 'new' songs are badly edited to old footage, and entire chunks of the original film are dropped in. Very few new chuckles (or chuckles at all) are to be found. The bright spots come from interviewees like Tom Hanks, David Bowie and Billy Connoly... most of whom are funnier in the outtakes than they were in the film itself.

If I thought anyone would buy it, I'd try to sell this DVD. Don't waste your time with this one - get the original.

1 out of 5 stars Ruttles 2 - Can't Buy Me Lunch.......2007-01-18

A blatant cop-out of a birlliant original. Eric Idle is truly a "Greedy Fat Bastard" for making it. Absolutly nothing new, just a rehash of the material from the classic. One redeeming note - the David Bowie interview is "pee in your pants" funny! Everyone else - eh, who cares? Note to Jewel: it helps to actaully watch the original mockumentary before commenting, sweetie - were you even alive when the first one came out?!

Two favorites in one for British comedy fans! The Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch, the hysterical follow-up to the 1978 Beatles mockumentary created by Eric Idle (Monty Python) looks back on thirty years of Rutle history, and features never-before-seen footage found in a warehouse in New Jersey. Fawlty Towers Series Two stars John Cleese (Monty Python) as Basil Fawlty, the sharp-tongued, short-tempered owner of Fawlty Towers, a hotel plagued by crisis, chaos and bizarre characters.
