A passable comedy for delinquent kids and unambitious teens with time to kill, Dumb and Dumberer does for prequels what Jerry Springer did for daytime television. With only faint connection to the 1994 hit starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, this ill-conceived prequel follows the Carrey/Daniels characters, Lloyd and Harry, as they bungle their way through high school. The principal and his demented lunch lady (Eugene Levy and SNL alumnus Cheri Oteri) have hatched a scheme to embezzle funds intended for students with "special needs," and Harry & Lloyd unwittingly recruit a few "intellectually challenged" classmates to fuel the plot. Veteran TV director Troy Miller prefers to keep the humor low and lowerer: Scatological jokes, puerile double-entendres, and juvenile sight gags ensure that Dumb and Dumberer lives up to its title. As Lloyd and Harry, respectively, Eric Christian Olsen and Derek Richardson deliver a few laughs, but they're stuck in a movie with special needs of its own. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Harry meets Lloyd and assembles a ragtag team for a high school experience unlike any other in this prequel to the hit comedy, Dumb and Dumber.

A Dumb Idea.......2007-09-04
Only Jeff Daniels is Harry.
Only Jim Carrey is Lloyd.
This sequel is a terrible move, especially when it succeeds a memorable 90's comedy. The actors that take over the roles for Harry and Lloyd are just plain bad at acting, and they are more annoying than funny. The story line makes no sense at all. It's just a copy-paste hack job passed off as a script, and it severely lacks focus, something you can truly remember, and passion.
The only redeeming character in this movie is Bob Saget, in which he plays a borderline-coprophobic father, and he has done much better in the past (i.e. his cameo appearance in "Half-Baked"). The scenes involving Bob Saget were the only parts I could remember, and when a cameo actor makes a more memorable and interesting role than the lead characters, it's going to flop. That's just what this movie did.
Forget this movie existed. Don't buy it used, and don't even download it illegally. It's not worth your time.
BAM!!!!!!!!!!!(gunshot).......2007-04-29
That was the sound you heard after I watched this "film". I was gonna shoot myself in the head, but I thought it would be better to shoot the disc instead. The makers of this piece of crap should be publicly humilated. This thing is just awfull. EVEN BOB SAGET CAN'T SAVE THIS! This could be the worst movie I have ever seen. Watching this movie is as much fun as getting impaled in the groin with a throwing star. It's cruel and unusuall torture. When we catch the rapists and the murderers in this country, don't kill them. Just make them watch this on a 24 hour loop,7 days a week. They would want to die. -1,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars.
Funnier than the original, the main characters where soooo.......2007-04-28
cute. This has a flimsy plot, but I really thought it was funny. The two main characters are adorable together. I thought it was better than the more pricey original. And if the "Lloyd" character didn't look exactly like a younger version of Jim Carey, I'll eat my hat. Don't think about this movie just laugh.
Slip on a Banana Peel Funny.......2007-03-09
This is a very silly movie, but if you are in a silly mood, it's great. It certainly isn't a movie for those who want intellectual, witty comedy, but if you need a dose of good ole Three Stooges like silliness I think you will enjoy it. I felt real good after it was over with and laughed a great deal, especially the part about the "little bus", but I don't want to give it away. It isn't for everyone, but it is for some of us.
Awful and a discrace to the original D&D 0/5 stars.......2006-12-16
This movie was just plain stupid these young disabled kids who are the resemblence of jim carrey and jeff daniels were just stupid annoying and not funny and kept getting worse. They make fun of mentally disabled kids which I don't think is funny especially that scene with that horrible feces incident where harry had an accident which he doesn't know how to clean his hands he just smears it all over the walls in the bathroom. I love the original dumb and dumber they had alot of hilarious humor that made me laugh and it was a classical comedy but this dumb & dumberer movie was crap and should never have been made it was a discrace to the original movie and to the fans too. Don't waste your money on this crap go for the unrated version of the original dumb and dumber instead you won't regret it.

The oddly titled Don't Torture a Duckling (taken from a minor plot point) is one of director Lucio Fulci's most linear and conventional narratives, relying more on story and mystery than on gore and atmospherics. In a rural Italian village, young boys turn up dead, and the authorities are stumped as to who the murderer is. A reporter lends his efforts to the hunt for the killer, many red herrings turn up, and more kids are murdered while the police search for the culprit. A sexually liberated young woman from Milan, a local witch, and the village idiot all fall under suspicion until the killer is uncovered. Gone is much of the director's trademark visual style, replaced with the blinding sunlight of an Italian summer for a hyperrealistic feel (though Fulci's affinity for the zoom shot and deep focus comes through). More tellingly, though, Fulci points toward the superstition and ignorance of the villagers as being as dangerous and destructive as the murderer himself. Also, the film's vehemently anti-Catholic sentiment had to have been controversial at the time of its release. Fans of the giallo and Italian horror in general would do well to seek out this film for an example of Lucio Fulci at his most grim and serious. --Jerry Renshaw
Description
A Classic Of The Perverse From Director Lucio Fulci
Several young boys are murdered in a remote village rife with sex and superstition, and the townspeople go mad with rage and violence. But when a hard-nosed reporter and promiscuous young woman search for the true killer, they discover a fiend - and motive - even more shocking than the crimes themselves.
DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING is a landmark giallo so savage, it could only come from the mind of director
Lucio Fulci (THE BEYOND, ZOMBIE, CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD). Featuring an international all-star cast that includes
Tomas Milian (RUN MAN RUN),
Barbara Bouchet (BLACK BELLY OF THE TARANTULA),
Irene Papas (Z) and
Florinda Bolkan (LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN), this re-discovered classic has been restored from the original vault materials and is now presented completely uncut and uncensored.
Customer Reviews:
Giallo rules!.......2007-07-14
Another great classic from the master of extreme horror. This giallo tale is about a mad-man(or woman)roaming the Italian countryside murdering little boys. It is not by any means his goriest or most f****d up but for the time the child murders and anti-catholic message were unheard of. There are a couple of cool special effects scenes and it is not completely devoid of gore, especially one scene that is reminiscent of "The Beyond" (the cliff scene is cool too) and can definitely see the start of a gory career for the maestro. The other great thing about this movie is the music is done by Riz Ortilani, the same man who made the excellent music for "Cannibal Holocaust". If your a giallo fan or a Fulci fan this is a must have. FULCI LIVES!
Fulci's Masterpiece.......2007-06-14
Italian director Lucio Fulci is rarely given the credit he deserves. Fulci was a director of great utility, who traversed generic boundaries regularly before he became firmly associated with the horror genre. His final gory step into the horror genre with "Zombi 2" was as much the result of economic imperatives and producer influence as it was a conscious decision on Fulci's part. These films were marked by an ambivalence towards conventional narrative patterns, which makes his 1972 effort "Don't Torture a Duckling" all the more exceptional. This film is as tightly plotted and efficiently constructed as any giallo film, but with its undertones of peasant superstition, the supernatural and witchcraft, places it firmly within the thematic universe of the director. This is giallo Fulci style and the concessions he makes to the conventions of this form are purely within the remit of iconography. This is a giallo marked by a particularly unsettling atmosphere of hypocrisy and perversion (one only need look toward a truly shocking scene in which a young boy of 12 is prick teased by a naked Barbara Bouchet). This is further augmented into the white washed walls of this rural northern Italian city, and its superstitious villagers, who aren't above a bit of chain whipping vigilante action. Fulci invests a great deal more in the procedures of the police, but ultimately the resolution is arrived at by amateur detectives, who represent both modernity and bourgeois society. The murders of innocent children, intriguingly, are not due to perverse motives, but instead an idealistic religious conviction which sees the modern world as a haven of vices which can only corrupt the innocence of youth. Fulci shows the negative side of both modern Italy and its rural counterpart. By showing that both are marked by ignorance and arrogance, Fulci seems to offer a particularly nihilistic vision of mankind.
This DVD re-issue by Blue Underground is excellent value for money. The picture quality is very good for a film that has been mishandled and distributed badly for decades. This is a must buy for anyone interested in European horror, not only is it an exemplary giallo, but also Fulci's most rounded cohesive and enjoyable pictures.
Great giallo..........2007-04-18
...this is unlike any other film by Fulci, other than Lizard in a Woman's Skin. It is about a serial killer who murders little kids. The townspeople become paranoid and police seek out the killer. Interesting story, and twist in the end. You think you know who the killer is, but you don't! Great movie. Excellent setting and pace. A must for your Giallo or Italian horror collection.
So you think Fulci is just a gore director?.......2007-04-02
Starting in 1979 with the release of Zombie, Lucio Fulci became known for gore movies. That continued through the 80s with a string of gore flicks, which include The Beyond and City of the Living Dead among others.
Don't Torture a Duckling isn't your typical Lucio Fulci film at all. There are pretty much no gore scenes, though there are two scenes where Fulci delivers some gore, but I'll touch upon that later on.
Don't Torture a Duckling as I stated before is very different then what Fulci did in the late 70s and 80s. If you're looking for gore you will not find much at all. Actually about half the murders take place off camera.
The plot is rather dark; pre-teens being killed is quite disturbing. Gore and violence is not needed when dealing with that subject matter. We also have a woman in her 20s that seems to have a weird sexual attraction to young boys.
It's really a strange movie and like I said unlike most of Fulci's other movies. While yes, Don't Torture a Duckling can be slow in some spots, and my biggest complaint is the sense of dread isn't quite there.
Here, Fulci at times creates some great tension and atmosphere and other times it just doesn't work. Oddly enough I found Fulci's gore movies to have more tension at times.
But with that said this is still an excellent movie and Lucio Fulci proves he is more then just a gore director. While some scenes I felt lacked tension others had overall Fulci nailed it.
While watching the movie I did enjoy it, but it was afterwards when I thought back I realized how good the movie actually was. There are several things while not directly brought up are hinted at, from sexual repression to pedophilia.
With all that hinted at and all going on in the movie it really does add to the movie and it shows what a talented filmmaker Lucio Fulci was.
While I won't spoil who the killer is their motive was really creepy and they didn't do simply because they are psychotic, which yeah sure the killer is, but the motive was downright creepy.
As for the gore; one woman is whipped with chains and while not overly gory like in Fulci's later movies the gore was decent and the scene was really disturbing and with the music playing in the back-round it was even more disturbing.
The last death in the movie is also a bit gory, but it's quite clear a dummy was used, but hey it still works well.
If you are a fan of Giallos I would very much recommend Don't Torture a Duckling. And for those who think Fulci is just a gore director should really check this out.
In closing, Don't Torture a Duckling isn't a perfect movie; it can at times be a bit slow and some scenes lack the tension they should have had, but overall Lucio Fulci delivers an excellent film and one of my favorite Giallos.
Co-star Barbara Bouchet has to rate as one of the most beautiful women to ever grace cinema.
Argento he's NOT!.......2005-08-26
Don't get me wrong I love Fulci movies, but I love them for the same reason most other people love them (the gore quotient). Fulci can always be depended upon to splatter tons of blood, guts and gore all over the screen and perhaps this is his way of covering up the fact that he's not the best director. I'd never go into a Fulci movie expecting a deep plot or oscar worthy acting.
With that said I did go into this movie expecting more. Maybe I expected too much and therefore I was very disappointed. Fulci's effort here falls short of suspense, character and atmosphere. Argento's "Bird With The Crystal Plumage" blows this film out of the water. Argento's "Bird" is intelligent, suspenseful and moves at a good pace. "Don't Torture a Duckling" fails to deliver any of the above. The reveiwer above states the movie is up there with Argento's "Deep Red" and that statement is as laughable as the way he spelled Fulci(Fulce).
I'm not taking anything away from Fulci. Like I said I love the movies he'd make 7 to 12 years later like "Zombie" "New York Ripper" "The Beyond" and "City of The Living Dead". All movies made between 1979 and 1983 as opposed to this one made in 1972. Fulci is known as The Godfather of Gore not the Godfather of Giallo. For good Giallo films check out any Argento film from the 1970's or Mario Bava's "Bay of Blood" (1972).
Description
Once upon a time, when you were six years old, and your parents used to tell you "bedtime stories." Somehow those stories became twisted in your dreams, and you sometimes had the worst nightmares about haunted heroes, fire-eating witches and bloodsucking werewolves who ate children for breakfast. Remember? Well, hold on to your popcorn, because your favorite nightmares come to life in a horror/fantasy salute to the age-old bedtime story ritual. Travel on a mysterious journey to a medieval world populated by blood-crazed witches, evil experiments and captive maidens. Then from the catacombs and dark caverns of medieval Europe you plunge into modern suburbia and the frolicsome adventures of a nubile lady jogger tracked by a savage werewolf. Finally, sensuality becomes macabre black comedy on the trail of three escaped mental patients who share a country house with a daffy murderess. Pray you can sleep again!
Customer Reviews:
el oso grande.......2007-08-25
The story lines are predictable and the special effects are cheap. I gave it 2 stars because the neigbor's kid like it.
Utter crap.......2007-07-23
I try to find some good in any movie I watch, even when I know I just bought a low-budge B movie. Hey, a lot of B movies make up for big budgets and prime distribution by being just darned good films. Deadtime Stories, however, is just a throwaway and not even worth a rent. Don't even bother unless you're getting it for free.
This movie lacks everything that can make movies rise above humble origins. The direction and cinematography are completely lacking in anything unique, or even familiar but well done. Good lighting, interesting camera work and good use of environment seem to be completely ignored (or just unknown).
The first story, involving a slave boy (well, young man) stuck serving a couple of witches trying to resurrect their dead sister, is downright stupid. Every dumb witch cliche' you can imagine is served up with equally bad dialogue and lame acting. No stars.
The 2nd story is supposed to be a "sexy suburban jogger" take on Little Red Riding Hood, but it's also stupid. It doesn't even make you laugh at it's failings, it just comes across as completely vapid. One star for a half-decent makeup job on the werewolf's face, which you get to see for a few seconds at the end.
The final story, which I reached only by hoping things could get better, is the worst. And I was hoping.... Anyway, here we have a family of phychos who have just broken dad out of what must be the most badly conceived mental facility ever shown on film. Even the attempts at making this something of a dark comedy fail because it all comes across as a great idea stolen from greatness by an utterly incompetent writing/filmmaking team. So, we have a brain-dead take on Goldilocks and the Three Bears with Goldilocks being even more whacko than the psycho "bear" family. Oh, and she has telepathic powers! Oh, and the mentally-challenged baby bear (a full-grown man with the mind of a 5 year-old) gives Goldilocks her first, ahem, thrill (in another completely horribly-done scene that lasts maybe 5 seconds and doesn't even appear to be sex until she exclaims how good it was), saving him the fate of her past boyfriends, most of whom are rotting in the house! Oh, and so they all live happily ever after once she does a "Bewitched" on the local newsman! Good grief, how stupid.
Please, resist all temptation with this one. It really is far, far, far away from living up to any promise in the premises of it's stories. The ideas could have been fun to see done with some talent behind them, but there is none here.

Carl Reiner (Where's Poppa?) brought comic Steve Martin to the screen in this mostly funny 1979 movie about a relentlessly stupid but innocent man, whom we get to know from childhood (where it never occurred to him that he was white as he was raised by a family of black sharecroppers) to romance (where he doesn't quite know what to do with Bernadette Peters). Martin is game as the moron, and this is the kind of film with funny moments people still talk about. --Tom Keogh

The jokes fall flat and some of them are just plain dumb! I know I may offend a lot of Martin fans who adore this movie, but I just don't get it.......sorry! Product Description
ENGLISH SUBTITLES. Directed by Vladimir Bortko Produced by Valery Todorovsky Music by Igor Kornelyuk Credited cast: Evgeny Mironov, Lidiya Velezheva, Vladimir Mashkov, Aleksandr Lazarev, Oleg Basilashvili, Inna Churikova, Olga Budina, Aleksandr Domogarov, Aleksey Petrenko, Vladimir Ilyin, Mikhail Boyarsky, Anastasiya Melnikova, Maria Kiseleva... Based on the novel of Fyodor Dostoevsky The Idiot Count Myshkin comes back to Russia from Switzerland where he was under care in psychiatric hospital. He meets Parfen Rogozhin on a train on his way to St.Petersburg. Rogozhin tells Myshkin about his passionate love for Nastasia Filippovna who used to be a kept-woman of millionaire Totsky. When the count gets to Petersburg, he comes to the house of his distant relative Epanchina who is a wife of a general. Myshkin meets Epanchinas husband, their daughters, and generals secretary Ganya Ivolgin. Nastasia Filippovnas portrait that was accidentally spotted by the count on the generals table creates a big impression on Myshkin... This incarnation of The Idiot is arguably the first which portrays Dostoyevskys entire novel; earlier versions have focused on only the first part, or the main storyline. No effort was spared in reproducing period detail; several museums provided fabric and lace for the costumes.
Customer Reviews:
An inspired "Idiot".......2007-09-02
This has to be the best ensemble acting I've seen in years. Yevgeny Mironov does a stupendous job with this role: he is shy, simple-appearing, self-effacing but innately intuitive and heart-piercing as Prince Myshkin. The other actors are all superbly chosen: Elizaveta Profievna, Rogozhin and Lebedyev stand out in my mind. My one quibble might be the casting choice for Nastasya Fillipovna, but then, her character is larger than life; it's doubtful that anyone could capture her nature as Dostoevsky describes her.
The locales, costumes, even the cadence of Russian phrasing no longer heard faithfully conjure the atmosphere of late 19th century Russia. I agree with the comments about the subtitles, which indeed are horrible. After awhile, I abandoned them and listened to the Russian dialogue, which when spoken slowly, was comprehensible. I admit to becoming lost when the action heated up and characters spoke so fast, they almost spoke over each other.
I liked this version so well, I plan to buy it and watch it many more times. A commendable effort for recent Russian cinema. Also recommended: The First Circle, the Master and Margarita and the State Councillor (all are 2005 films, I believe).
Greatest Novel to T.V. Movie Translation In my View.......2007-06-19
When I found out that they had made a TV movie out of my favorite Novel and my favorite writer I knew I had to buy and watch it no matter what. I'm glad I did. It is the cloesest translation from book to movie and the best. The Characters I saw in my imagination where almost exactly like the actual actors. The acting was great. I loved it.
The only thing I didn't like was how quickly the subtitles went by and that some subtitles didn't fit on the whole screen, but that was rare. This didn't stop me from enjoying this greatly.
Impact!.......2006-11-29
This is an excellent adaptation of the Idiot emphasizing more the comedy of manners than the tragedy. The tragic aspects of the story don't build well throughout the plotline and appear almost melodramatic. In spite of its better qualities, nothing of value can be said for the English subtitles, which are by far the worst I've ever seen.
First off the subtitles sometimes run their beginnings and ends off to the left and right sides of the letterbox image, so when dialog is rapid you get a whole set of sentence fragments. Then the countless spelling errors are so bad (the 'be' of to be spelled as 'bee') that you momentarily lose all sense of what's happening while you ponder some meaningless stray word. Sometimes the middle of a sentence will have an untranslated Cyrillic word stuck in the middle. But the crowning moment of bad translation has to be when General Ivolgin has a stroke. His son yells out, "Stroke!" He says this correctly in Russian and any translation of the book itself says the same thing. However these subtitle writers decide the son says, "Impact,!" as if he had been hit by a massive mortar shell. Awful!
I hope they spend a quite considerable longer time adding subtitles to Bortko's Master and Margerita.
Highly recommended!.......2005-06-20
Subtle screen adaptation, excellent casting; ingenious acting, for example, in the scene at Yepanchins' high-society party... Whether you like Dostoyevsky or not, if you are interested in him, this film is worth watching.
The best!!!.......2005-01-09
If you like Dostoevsky, you can not find the better movie based on his book IDIOT.Pefect acting, very close to the book, made in Russia and by Russians-as realistic as it is possible.Must to see.

To say always the truth is hazardous, because will always hurt somebody!.......2007-03-10
The profound gaze of Akira Kurosawa about a simple man, naïve and idiot, considered by the doctors as a dement epileptic, will face the world with his only weapon; the truth and nothing more the truth. But as you know, in this world of wolves, you must sleep with an eye open and just a few persons are capable to accept the awful truth that can make you blind.
This powerful dramatis personae will involve two women who will love him from different perspectives. Inspired in the famous work of Dostoievsky, this another great gem of this master filmmaker.
Watch it and you will experience the crude reality of the madness and feel what it means to be just in the razor's edge.
Extraordinary and one of my top one hundred desert island films.

c'mon....it's not THAT bad.......2005-11-04
my department ordered this version of THE IDIOTS for a class....and yes, i panicked when i first saw the japanese subtitles....but with a little playing with my languages button, i got english titles no problem.
it's true that most of the naughtiest bits are gone here....depending on where you sit, that can ruin the whole thing....but unless you're using a multiformat DVD and can play aussie discs, this is really your only option to have von Trier's Dogma95 film on disc. By no means is it a perfect version of the film, but it's just about the only one available to us non-danes....and the film itself is fascinating.
It's not Japanese !!.......2005-07-21
I am Japanese, so I got this DVD.
But It was Chinese subtitles, it wasn't Japanese at all.
So only DANISH and CHINESE can enjoy this DVD.
Be careful!
Japanese/Danish version.......2005-06-20
This version of "Idiots" notably differs from descriptions of the movie offered elsewhere. I suspect it has been heavily cut to something like a PG13 version for the Japanese market.
I still want to see it (but with ENGLISH subtitles, please).......2005-05-05
UNLESS YOU SPEAK DANISH OR JAPANESE, DO NOT ORDER THIS VERSION.
This dvd is in DANISH with JAPANESE SUBTITLES.

Photon is the funniest Anime I've ever seen........2003-08-04
A master piece, great characters, amazing backgrounds,an outstanding villan. The strangness captures you. Every night I pray to the anime gods that there will be more made. This is definatly one to own!
This is a Great Anime.......2003-02-09
This one of the best anime I have ever seen.
Not only will it make you laugh but the sweetness
will touch a special place in your heart. The last
two episodes were the most touching but I found all
the episodes uplifting with their sense of japanesee
style humor. I would recommand this to anyone with a
sense of humor.
Great anime if your looking for laughs.......2002-08-31
This is a very funny series. The scenes in the spa where you just hear the woman talking is great. It's a little over 3 hours long (6 episodes). Although there is one major plot, there are several small ones throughout the series including stories about a "holy object" (very funny once you realize what it is), rock star, food, and even marriage.
The DVD-Rom features are also nice. Not only do they have the full cast and credits, but several images from the series. They even include the dialog for the series if you want to redub it.
There are a couple minor downsides, though. First off, some of the technology is never fully explained. The animation itself tapers very slightly as it progresses. The big difference was the "doodle" (You'll learn a new word in japanese) that was on one characters forhead changed to just a couple of dots towards the end. The ending is a little rushed and very confusing; I had to watch the last two episodes a couple times to understand it.
One important note I feel I should mention. On the box it is labeled for 13 and up. I really think this is too low. There's nudity throughout the entire series and there are constant jokes about nudity and anatomy that really shouldn't be viewed by young children. It is also very graphic (think nosebleed only 10 times worse) Use your discretion.
This is one of those animes that you should get. No collection should be without this.
Good series, bad ending.......2002-01-28
Let me start off by saying the ending seemed rushed, and made little sense. The emperor suddenly showing up, and the strange battle, as they tossed the words a-ho and una-ho around so much it made no sense what tehy were talkign abuot after a while. But in teh end they get him. It seemed like that series should have been longer, so the fight could make better sense.
Photon-sama!.......2001-11-26
i saw this series in fansub format about 2 years ago... and loved it. as soon as i found out that Central Park Media was going to release it, on DVD at that, i had to get it! i have watched it about 5 times now and i still laugh at it. but when i brought my girlfriend over to watch movies she picked this particular one out of all the rest. she was a little... shocked at first (nudity i do believe) but then she was paying attention to what they was doing and saying to each other and she was laughing just as hard as i was. this is a really great comedy anime, with the usual touch on risque subjects.
oh yea, the villan of the series, Poppachan, is so inept... he is just laughable.

entertaining.......2007-04-08
Imagine yourself back in the cold war-period of half a century ago. Add to it your liking of the dry, tongue-in-cheek English humor, a little slapstick, and 'Une ravissante idiote' will entertain you well.
Its story is about a Soviet spy circle in London, trying to steal a file with valuable military information from a vault. A paper file, to be precise, as personal computers do not exist back in 1964. Anthony Perkins is the spy circle's main tool to obtain it, Brigitte Bardot acting as his more than willing helper ... sorry folks, don't get any ideas: there is no nudity involved in this movie.
All in all, 'Une ravissante idiote' gives us a well-built, consistent story, as well as fine acting from everybody involved. Both Perkins and Bardot do well in this light comedy.
A Somewhat Strange Film.......2003-12-09
This is one of the more peculiar films I've seen recently. I got it mainly because it was in French, and had both Perkins and Bardot in starring roles. Unfortunately the plot never seemed able to settle on being a mystery or a comedy. Where it was all one or all the other the story "worked", but when it oscillated from one to the other I had a feeling of schizophrenia.
Perkin's presence in the film was a complete surprise. I had expected that his lines would be dubbed but instead he delivered them in excellent French with only a slight accent. However I'm still not quite sure why he was chosen for the part since he was the only non-native speaker and there were surely a lot of other French actors of the period who could have pulled off the role just as easily.
Bardot was for me (warning, male genes at work) by far the best thing about the film. She had just the right comedic light touch as the apparently air-headed seamstress who turns out to be not at all what she seems. Like Halle Berry and Katherine Hepburn, she would be beautiful even if she were wrapped in burlap!
Two other aspects of the film / DVD were jarring. First, whenever there was an action scene, the film was apparently speeded up to about 1.5x normal, giving it a cartoonish look rather than any sense of intensity. Second, the subtitles were written carelessly, with oddball spellings and grammatical goofs: "ofcourse", "incase", "thankyou" and other such non-words abounded. There were even a number of places where the English text, while still in keeping with the plot line, had nothing to do with the French spoken by the actors! If you're reasonably fluent, just turn off the subtitles and écoutez en français.
Enter Bardot the comedian and Perkins speaking French!!.......2003-02-06
This rather bizarre spy spoof showed the talents of the famed sex kitten Bardot as a comedian....with that rather odd guffaw that she kept hissing in this film one can only be pleasantly irritated. The plot was really hillarious despite having a rather "in your face" type of humour. Bardot teams up with Anthony Perkins(who incidentally spoke perfect French with an authentic accent) to create an unforgettable brand of comedy.I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD...and would like to thank my friend John for getting me this as a Christmas present.Only one thing was disappointing....I would have preferred it in colour!

A Beautiful, Poignant Experience in Holistic Psychotherapy.......2005-09-12
This film profoundly touched me. It can only be described as a beautiful, tragic creation by a young and dynamic filmmaker, Lars von Trier. Americans raised in the 70's will readily relate to the experiential, therapeutic approach offered by the character of the young analyst, Stoffer, in this film. His clients are not "retards" at all, but those engaged in the most difficult psychotherapy: self-analysis. They evoke so much of the activist, transference therapy of the good 'ole days of California-style "Psychology Today"-era psychotherapy that I had a tear in my eye during much of this film. The filmmaker obviously intended as much: note the beautiful, lilting piece by Camille Saint Saens that punctuates the melancholy of the disbanded group of brilliant young psychologists, all truly the children of the great Viennese himself. And, true, those who are familiar with my reviews here will note that I am of course remembering Stoffer in my own way, in my father's own experiments in the 1970's "youth PARC" movement for the developmentally-disabled on the East Coast of the US. There was so much in Stoffer that reminded me of some of my fondest memories of my father and the Berkeley psychotherapist Alan Weinstock who, perhaps some one hundred years from now, people will finally be just beginning to comprehend. . .Much like this beautiful, haunting synaesthesia in experiential mental retardation itself.
