All films take a certain suspension of disbelief. Fight Club takes perhaps more than others, but if you're willing to let yourself get caught up in the anarchy, this film, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, is a modern-day morality play warning of the decay of society. Edward Norton is the unnamed protagonist, a man going through life on cruise control, feeling nothing. To fill his hours, he begins attending support groups and 12-step meetings. True, he isn't actually afflicted with the problems, but he finds solace in the groups. This is destroyed, however, when he meets Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), also faking her way through groups. Spiraling back into insomnia, Norton finds his life is changed once again, by a chance encounter with Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), whose forthright style and no-nonsense way of taking what he wants appeal to our narrator. Tyler and the protagonist find a new way to feel release: they fight. They fight each other, and then as others are attracted to their ways, they fight the men who come to join their newly formed Fight Club. Marla begins a destructive affair with Tyler, and things fly out of control, as Fight Club grows into a nationwide fascist group that escapes the protagonist's control.

Fight Club, directed by David Fincher (Seven), is not for the faint of heart; the violence is no holds barred. But the film is captivating and beautifully shot, with some thought-provoking ideas. Pitt and Norton are an unbeatable duo, and the film has some surprisingly humorous moments. This gets labelled as a guy movie all the time. It's definitely one that's aimed toward guys but it's a sophisticated and well put together movie that I feel anyone could enjoy. There's points in the movie that may be too 'touchy' for females but the story well then makes up for it.

I'm not going to go into detail about the movie seeing as the number of review before mine that have, but I will go into detail about the DVD features.

David Fincher knows how to put out DVDs, this, as well as Seven (New Line Platinum Series), feature no less than 4 commentaries. Also included are plenty of feautettes, deleted scenes, and behind-the-scenes footage. The case is awesome just as well. This is a must have. It very well may be the best movie David Fincher ever directed.

When i first saw this movie, i was inspired by the scenes of the vultures torturing the young monkeys. The fact that honey mustard was used for their baptism was somewhat freightening, but the movie redeems itself when Brad Pitt (also known as Mr. Stromboli) inherits two million pounds of green roses.
An interesting oak tree once spoke to me. He held my hand. Gently. Ever so gently. And he told me that everything would be okay. Maybe it was his courage that led me to bring him into bed with me. That was painful. But his gentle caress took me to deep oceans of heavenly chocolate. The morning after was awkward. I made him scrambled eggs with turkey bacon, but he did not have a mouth. So i polished his leaves instead. Or maybe it was that he was actually a woman at heart. A purple woman.

Most people don't know the first rule of fight club. This film made me a Norton and Pitt fan. I didn't like the ending but I like the movie over all.

What's the story, Whishbone?.......2007-04-04

Wishbone is a dog. He lives with a boy named Joe, and Joe's mom. Joe has some friends that he sees at school, and after school. During the show, something happens that makes Wishbone think of a character or situation in a classic book. Then that story is woven in (with Wishbone playing the part of a main character from the book) with the story of the family.

Well, you can't go wrong with this cute little dog, his family, and the classic book stories worked in. The costumes for the dog are so cute and clever. The tying-in of the book's story to the story going on with the family is very creative.

This is a great show for all ages. There is something for everyone.

Everyone at our house was so sorry when the show was taken off the air. However, we are now thrilled to be able to purchase at least some of the wonderful shows.

I highly recommend it.

You would not think that a children's show would be fun to watch for an adult but Wishbone just makes you laugh. It really gives a fine decription of the story but also entertains you to the end. With the amount of garbage in children shows, it's a blessing to find a program that is of value to children and adults.

The first theatrical film from the popular Nickelodeon TV series became the surprise hit of the 1998 holiday box-office crunch, trouncing the highly competitive kids market. The key ingredient to the Rugrats' success is the writing. Venturing into their first theatrical movie, the pals--including the intrepid diaper-wearing Tommy Pickles, the nervous Chuckie, the twins Lil and Phil, and the wonderfully prissy Angelica--garble English into funny prose ("I want those fugitives back in custard-y!") and use movie references in their fantasy life. The opening here is a dead-on spoof of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The big news for the movie is that Tommy gets a new baby brother, named Dylan (or Dil for short). The rest of the film has no real plot but is a series of adventures as the clan gets lost in the forest riding an inventive Reptar wagon that is the '90s equivalent of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Parents search for the kids, the kids learn new lessons, everyone goes home happy. The Rugrats Movie is not as wildly appealing as A Bug's Life but is far goofier and wackier with its animation. There's also a tremendous sense of joy that is often missing from cartoons these days, and the songs used in the film-- from such diverse musicians as Busta Rhymes, Iggy Pop, Lisa Loeb, Lou Rawls, Beck, and Devo--add to the fun. It's an acquired taste, but the creators' first efforts to take the 10-minute TV sketches into an 80-minute feature pay off.

The video contains a short (Winslow Doc) from Nickelodeon's series CatDog. Although the animation is similar, one can only hope the series does not reach the popularity of Rugrats. --Doug Thomas

I used to love this movie. The animation is amazing, and the voice talent couldn't be better. My only complaint is that the animation can sometimes be a tad disgusting, particularly in the scenes with Dil. Otherwise, a top-notch movie.

I Just haaaaaaaate the Rugrats!It's stipud,boring,and gross.I have no idea why alot of kids like this show and for you pepole over 20 who do I say get a job!Whats so great about it!All they do is site in they're crub, mispronounce words and sentences,say poopie,drop dippers,play pertend,and other dumb and gross stuff.There is also prombles between this show and the real world for insteens there is some pepole who watch this show and can't speak perfect english (eventhough I only know one I bet thery's more).Maybe becouse The Rugrats say stuff like I gots to go potty and another thing is younger kids might copy the gross habbits from this show such as going to the bathroom on trees and eat stuff they're not soposto to eat like bugs. If you don't agree with then too bad but you adment.

Okay, man, I don't even know what you're trying to say. If there was one thing I got out of that brainless rant, it was this: you're a hypocrite. You say that the Rugrats don't use perfect English and mispronounce words. Well, look at your review! It looks like it was typed by a 6-year-old. Plus, the characters are FREAKING BABIES!!! The Rugrats before the decline.......2005-10-03

As I write this review I can't help but remember when I loved the Rugrats. It was once my favorite show in television as a kid. And when the movie came out in theaters I was more excited than anyone would've imagined. I was a huge fan. The TV show has decreased in quality, but the movie still remains solid. It introduced a new character to the series, and to this day still remains the greatest adventure that the rugrats have gone on.

Didi has recently found out she's pregnant, and that means Tommy is getting a baby brother. When Tommy's new brother Dil is born, things around the house change. Dil begins to receive a bit more attention than Tommy, and he's always loud and obnoxious... the way Tommy used to be when he was first born. Phil, Lil, and Chuckie can't stand him and neither can Angelica.

In the meantime, Stewie has made a new invention. A Reptar mobile (Reptar is the Rugrats version of "Godzilla" and the babies' hero). When Stu and Didi head out for a while, they leave the kids home alone with Grandpa. If you've watched the show you know Grandpa is not a good baby sitter... he always falls asleep, and that's what he does here.

The babies see this Reptar mobile and decide to hop inside and play around. Angelica (the rambuncious three year old brat) is trying to watch her show and so she is very annoyed. She gives the babies the boot (literally) and the Reptar wagon suddenly slides out the front door. Tommy has little idea how to control it, and neither do his friends. Phil and Lil, however, don't see it as such a bad thing. To them it's a chance to take new-born baby Dil back to the hospital.

With the babies gone, Angelica can finally find peace... except there's a problem. When she gave the babies the boot they took her favorite doll Cynthia with them! Now Angelica decides she must find them, and so she saddles up the family dog, Spike. And Spike ends up running out the front door... dragging Angelica along.

The result? The babies getting lost in the forest far away from home. When the parents find out, they go on a large search for the babies.

I suppose what got me to really like this movie was the adventure of it. The little imagination of these babies is amazing! The movie even begins with a little rendition of "Indiana Jones" as they're actually exploring thier house. But when they really AREN'T in a place that's their home, you can see just how brave they get.

Never mind how stupid the parents are (they NEVER learn from leaving the babies with Grandpa), the adventure is exciting. Especially when Phil and Lil manage to let a bunch of monkey's take Dil away. Soon Tommy really IS the one responsible for his brother. The movie is funny in many places, and it's songs are enlightening. Any child will enjoy this movie to death.

Unlike it's sequel, the babies get into some trouble that isn't too far beyond their control. By that I mean, the Reptar mobile is just a wagon, and not some HUGE GIGANTIC THING DESTROYING THE CITY! This adventure is more REAL than in the sequel, "Rugrats in Paris".

And while Dil isn't the most likeable character, it's unrealistic to think he can do as much as the other babies can (he can't walk, mind you). It would help if Dil was as adventureous as his brother, but considering he's only a few weeks old, we can get by.

The animation is top notch, and very vivid and vibrant. Much better than the television show ever was. It's just incredible.

If there were problems I'd say it's this: It is certainly not a movie for grown ups. If you grew up with the Rugrats as I did, you will probably like this movie. However, grown ups who didn't grow up with the Rugrats, will be annoyed by their kids loving to watch the film. It is clearly aimed at the younger audience.

It's a great movie. Especially for your kids, and especially for nostalgia. This was an incredible movie eight years ago, and remains a good movie for your kids today.

My son is a fan of the Rugrats and wanted the two movies for his movie collection. He looks at the movies over and over again. The movies even helps him to relax before going to bed.

Don't watch it with your kids.......2005-09-03

The animation in this movie is an improvement over the televised series, the voice talent is good, the plot is solid-and I hate this movie. I cannot tolerate the body fluid/noise humor, the screaming and squalling of the kids, and the mamby pamby parents. But my daughter cannot get enough of this. She watches it at least once a week, and it never fails to delight her.

The music here is excellent. If that's the focus of your interest, then by all means get yourself the soundtrack recording, which certainly shows a range of Grisman/Garcia collaboration (from the jazz-exotica of Arabia to the children's music of Jenny Jenkins and Freight Train to the bluegrass of Sunny Sunny South, etc.).

But why make a movie of it? Grisman/Garcia, while virtuosic musicians with great blend, are stultifyingly dull to watch. They stand largely stock still while playing or leaning into the mic to sing, and the acoustic performances shown here (even the lame B&W video of the blues classic "The Thrill is Gone") are utterly devoid of pyrotechnic eye-candy, facial close-ups of performer/audience to offer a narrative/emotional frisson, or even the barest focus on finger-technique. This is music to listen to, not to watch, and even the dull concert footage is routinely interrupted by interview material that fails to illuminate the proceedings.

In fact, the interviews represent a staggering loss of opportunity, considering the insiders (members of the band and producers), intimates (family), and experts (influenced and influential musicians like Bela Fleck) presented. We get little information aside from bland, repetitive hype. "These guys were really great musicians and Jerry Garcia was much more famous than Dave Grisman yet still hung out with him in the early 1970s and again throughout the '90s," about covers it. Moviegoers curious about how the music was constructed, the virtuosic technique employed, the lives of these individuals, and visual examples of the meaning and impact they might have had on one another, art, fans, anything will find this documentary to be a frustrating, hollow shell... and boring to boot.

unsatisfying.......2006-04-30

I don't know much about David Grisman - he seems to be a talented and innovative musician. Plus, he was a friend of Jerry Garcia, which is always good. In fact, their musical talents combined are very exceptional. However, the great music was destroyed by the annoying interviews that permeated the whole footage. I would have enjoyed listening to a song all the way through without interruptions, but sadly, it was not to be. If you love music, skip this DVD, but if you love documentaries, this is the film for you.

Awful release. Grisman's daughter is an idiot........2005-08-22

Grisman's daughter was in charge of this train-wreck. She focused 70 percent of the video on that worthless has been david grisman, and very little on Garcia. There was an awesome beginning to "Sitting here in Limbo", only to be STOPPED, and interrupted by stupid interviews. As if anyone lays awake at night wondering about Bela Fleck's opinion of Garcia and Grisman's collaboration. Worthless, DO NOT BUY!

Grisman and Garcia - Beards of a Feather.......2003-07-15

Unlike most of the reviewers here I am more of a dawghead than a deadhead. David Grisman is my musical idol. The man is a creative genius. I bought the DVD because there's very little video available of David Grisman and I knew that this would be a video bonanza for Grisman fans. I'm not disappointed. The only drawback to this movie in my opinion is that it wasn't shot as a documentary but as Gillian Grisman says, it was a hodgepodge of home movies that were simply used to create a documentary a few years after Garcia's death. Still, there is a certain charm to the fact that it wasn't shot as a documentary. The subjects are free to be themselves, not realizing that anyone outside of their inner circle will ever view the footage. It's obvious that Gillian decided to study the art of movie making once she determined that she was going to create a documentary. She went to great lengths to tell the story of her dad and Garcia with an appropriate thread of performance, studio, and interview video. Sure, there are a lot of interview clips, but it is a documentary after all. Personally I didn't find them all that distracting. And for an added bonus, the DVD viewer has the option of viewing the movie with commentaries from David and Gillian. Several outtakes are also added, including Vassar Clements' embarrassing story of how he was playing with Garcia without really knowing who the Grateful Dead are. I'm sure most deadheads will love this flick. I know dawgheads like me will.

Check out this movie. If you're into bluegrass, you ought to pick this up. We all know the distinctive style of Jerry's guitar sounds with the Dead, but have you heard him on the banjo? The music that he played with Dave Grisman, Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, and John Kahn is some of the best bluegrass you can get. There is a certain laid-back way about their sound. Some folks find bluegrass to be too shrill and hyperactive. You don't get that sense, even when they're frailing at top speeds. Which they can do with the best of em.

DGQ- Great , But...........2007-01-13

As someone who has followed Grisman's career since the early 1980's, I totally appreciate the music. The band was nothing short of revolutionary and the musicianship was/is still off the scale in every incarnation that the band has had in the last 27 years that I've been following them. That being said, there was just something about the sound quality that left me wanting with this DVD. It sounded either that it was a bad sound mix or almost that they used an omni-directional microphone in the audiance for the sound track. I yearned to hear the individual instruments clearer but it just wasn't to be. I've heard the band live more than a couple of times and this came short of that experience. Still..... much better than never experiencing them at all.

The DGQ line-up at this time consisted of Grisman on mandolin, Darol Anger on violin, Rob Wasserman on bass and Mike Marshall on guitar and mando-cello. This concert recording from 1983 was made at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and all four players are in great form. This was about the time of Grisman's "Dawg Jazz/Dawg Grass" recording - and the band adds steller performances of both of those tunes to some old Grisman favorites such as Cedar Hill and Dawg Funk (from Mondo Mando). Grisman was always pretty generous letting his talented employees shine individually and here Anger and Marshall rip on Marshall's "Gator's Dream" while Wasserman supplies several scintillating solos on the bass. They do a great version of the Gypsy Medley (made up of tunes Grisman wrote for the movie "King of the Gypsies" - previously recorded by the DGQ with Stephane Grappelli, the legendary partner of the ultimate Gypsy Jazz musician Django Reinhart.) They also perform "Janice" and "Dawgology" from "Hot Dawg". Grisman is a genuine musical giant, pushing bluegrass boundaries in directions not previously even considered. At the time he teamed up with Anger and Tony Rice to record the original DGQ album "innovative" doesn't even BEGIN to describe what that music sounded like compared to anything else in American Music. Although Rice had recorded perhaps the landmark album in Bluegrass History, (J.D. Crowe and the New South - on Rounder) it is reported that when Grisman played Rice a home recording of some of his music that Rice told him "That's the best music I ever heard." Grisman modeled his bands somewhat on the standard bluegrass band - without banjo - but also leaned just as heavily on the tradition of the "Quintette du Hot Club de France" of Django and Grappelli. While it had long been known that bluegrass musicians like Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs were improvisational virtuosos, the DGQ ratcheted up the musicianship a whole `nother notch. After recording the "Gypsies" soundtrack guitarist Tony Rice went out on his own, replaced quickly by teenaged virtuoso Mark O'Connor. (Can you imagine being asked as a teenager to replace Tony Rice in a band that was touring in a few weeks with Grisman and Grappelli?) Anyway - with O'Connor the DGQ was a Quintette. Then when Mark left to fight it out with Steve Morse in the Dregs, Mike Marshall moved over from 2nd mandolin to guitar, even though (as Grisman himself said) Marshall could blow Grisman away on his own instrument.

So - this is a legendary lineup at the top of their game burning the fire out of some absolutely classic tunes. Get it.

Description

Life in the ghetto can be much like a dog pit- brutal, short and pointless. Donte, a conflicted black teenager seems to be headed for the Pit. Capitalizing on the brutality, violence, and abuse of the dog fighting world for financial gain is ghastly. Selling this material supports and perpetuates this horrible industry and sends the wrong message about our society. Until Amazon stops distributing this and other dog and cockfighting materials, I cannot in good conscience give them my business, and I will urge friends and family to do the same.

It Only Reminds Us..........2007-07-05

This movie is why we see very few black actors that win oscars. Compare this movie to those done by Samuel L Jackson, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington. These movies might be hits to the ghetto fabulous, but real entertainment they are far from being. It's just another excuse to show young black men what people portray them as being and doing, and in this movie, it's gang bangers and drug dealers.

Dynomite, ghetto classic........2005-11-23

I had seen this movie getting bootlegged in Downtown Brooklyn for weeks before I actually rented it. While I wasn't sure what to expect, (the box cover made the movie look cheap) I knew it was hitting a nerve on the street. Word of mouth had that movie selling thousands of bootleg copies. When I watched it I found out why. While it is very violent, it also has heart. I'm not surprised Lion's Gate released this gem in the rough, I just wish they hadn't insulted it with such a cheesy title. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those movies, we're watching years from now. When I returned the movie to the video store I bought my own copy (legal, of course). I hope Ghetto Dawg 3 is as good as 2.

An excellent movie with an grade-Z title.......2005-10-06

One element of this movie is the sad spectacle of vicious dogs fighting in a pit while people gamble on the outcome, hence the title -- but it can also refer to the people themselves, living in a world of guns and crime, fighting for their lives. It's no place for an inexperienced teenager like Donte (Daniel Outlaw) but he finds himself caught up in it when his older brother, a soldier for a gang boss named Big Daddy, is killed in a gun battle. Donte swears revenge, but when the time comes he finds himself unprepared to carry out the act, almost resulting in his own death. So he begins to hang out with one of his late brother's associates, Jojo (Paris Campbell), who can be deceptively easygoing one moment and a cold-blooded killer the next. Since killing is the main duty Jojo performs while working for Big Daddy, Donte tags along in the hope of acquiring this skill so that he can apply it against the man responsible for his brother's death. In the process he comes dangerously close to losing his soul, and becoming just another "dawg" struggling to survive in the pits.

This is a very fine movie in all respects. There are good performances from the entire cast, an intelligent script, and highly-capable direction from the Crook brothers. There are bursts of violence, but it is realistic and non-operatic (no slow-motion, quick cuts, etc.). Everyone involved clearly wanted to use the low budget to make a thoughtful, engaging film rather than a simple exploitation flick, and they succeeded. The final scenes are tense and suspenseful. I found the entire movie to be a very satisfying viewing experience that went well beyond my expectations.

Plain Bad Writing with Denis Leary Wasted .......2007-01-30

Also known as `Dawg," "Bad Boy" stars Denis Leary as Doug, lifelong womanizer whose grandmother left him one million dollars on one condition that Doug visit a series of his ex-lovers and convince them he was really sorry for what he had done to them. Anna (Elizabeth Hurley) beautiful attorney has to accompany him around the West Coast to ensure that Doug does not cheat.

This kind of film is made for fun, and I know we don't have to take its contrived premise seriously. All you see is Doug learning a lesson through a journey after a string of humiliating experiences by the hand of those whom he had humiliated before. `Bad Boy' tries to be funny and sentimental at the same time and fails terribly in both.

OK, we know this guy needs punishment and he certainly deserves it. But to turn his punishment into light-hearted entertainment the film requires better skills than pitting Denis Leary against a loopy lady living with dozens of cats, sex-starved actress and `wild' nightclub dancer Eric/a. All these episodes are very unfunny making off-beat `Broken Flowers' (which I didn't like) look like a hilarious comic masterpiece.

The film's `surprise' ending doesn't mean anything because we have lost interest in the story long before which is plain bad writing. Leary is a good actor and even in this mess you can see his talent which is sadly wasted, and beautiful Hurley is as wooden as ever.

I like Denis Leary. I like Elizabeth Hurley. That said, I like this quirky little comedy about a jerk who gets exactly what he deserves when he goes cross country with a beautiful woman to get exactly what he deserves from--well, at least the last few ex-girlfriends he treated like garbage. This is a slightly gross, semi-sentimental, and all out logically funny and sexy romp for every guy who ever went down this road, and a satisfying outcome for every woman who ever wished that wayfaring male would get exactly what he's got coming to him. Great fun for us girls, and a good lesson to certain men out there who may recognize themselves in this little venture. Guaranteed big laughs and some surprisingly touching moments without being a chick flick.

FEATHER-WEIGHT ROMP.......2005-04-15

Yet another on the list of corny comedies, summed up aptly by its line, "I was there, she was horny, it's called timing."

But that doesn't make a review, so an attempt must be made.

We start with a script slimmer than Bill Clinton's book of good conduct. A curiously sumptuous lawyer, played by Liz Hurley, informs Mr. Doug (the 'Dawg' of the title I suppose though it's unclear) that he must apologize to all the women he has whammed bammed thank you ma'amed before he can avail of his late grandmother's plush inheritance.

In a heartbeat our lawyer and client have strapped themselves to white leather seats in a ragtop Merc convertible and set sail around the mounts of southern California (which we see in the same persnickety shot about ten times) to catch up with a choice coterie of has-been girlfriends.

Unchanged attire would suggest all this riding happens in one day but what's logic to do in these circumstances. We keep watching to discover how these "ex" women might have turned out. No two of them are alike, the ensemble of eccentricity is interesting. A few expected botches later things take a smooth turn and predictably Lawyer & Client Inc ends up bonding like spit and tobacco.

Just so things don't end up too simple though, a twist is chucked in as an afterthought but sadly it's a little too little too late. I'd catch it on cable when three laughs per hour were not unacceptable.

Not as good as I had hoped. DOUBLE WHAMMY is much better........2004-04-14

*DAWG* The chemistry just isn't as good in DAWG as it is in DOUBLE WHAMMY(which also stars Denis Leary and Elizabeth Hurley). In DAWG they're way too opposite with conflicting agendas that they never made that love connection like I kept expecting. It just left a bad taste in my mouth at the end of the movie. I must admit there's a pretty good twist that I didn't see coming. But, looking back, it's kind of obvious. I just wasn't looking for it, I kept thinking they would fall in love or something like that. Sometimes a good twist can save a movie, for me, but it didn't warrant enough bite for me to appreciate the entire movie.
Anyway, it's not a horrible movie, it's just not as good as DOUBLE WHAMMY. Perhaps, if I'd seen DAWG first, I may have liked it better. But I doubt it, seeing DOUBLE WHAMMY 2nd would have simply persuaded me back to this original conclusion anyway. I wouldn't recommend it unless you get it at a deep-discounted price.

A fun movie..........2004-01-10

This is a fun movie with a great acting duo between Dennis Leary and the beautiful Elizabeth Hurley... Leary plays this womanizing male chauvinist who has to track down 12 of his former 'kills' and get them to say 'I forgive you' in order to collect on his dead grandmothers inheritance of $1,000,000. Liz Hurley plays his grandmothers lawyer who tags along to witness the 'I forgive you's.

The movie blends a nice mix of comedy with a few touches of sappy moments.

Gals- You'll probably like this movie, but I don't think it's a 'crying' movie

Guys- No, it's not that much of a chick flick. It's got Dennis Leary in it- do you really think he'd do a chick flick??? Besides- if you get bored with the plot Liz Hurley makes for some mighty nice scenery to focus on for awhile...
