Italy's rubber-faced funnyman Roberto Benigni accomplishes the impossible in his World War II comedy Life Is Beautiful: he shapes a simultaneously hilarious and haunting comedy out of the tragedy of the Holocaust. An international sensation and the most successful foreign language film in U.S. history, the picture also earned director-cowriter-star Benigni Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor. He plays the Jewish country boy Guido, a madcap romantic in Mussolini's Italy who wins the heart of his sweetheart (Benigni's real-life sweetie, Nicoletta Braschi) and raises a darling son (the adorable Giorgio Cantarini) in the shadow of fascism. When the Nazis ship the men off to a concentration camp in the waning days of the war, Guido is determined to shelter his son from the evils around them and convinces him they're in an elaborate contest to win (of all things) a tank. Guido tirelessly maintains the ruse with comic ingenuity, even as the horrors escalate and the camp's population continues to dwindle--all the more impetus to keep his son safe, secure, and, most of all, hidden. Benigni walks a fine line mining comedy from tragedy and his efforts are pure fantasy--he accomplishes feats no man could realistically pull off--both of which have drawn fire from a few critics. Yet for all its wacky humor and inventive gags, Life Is Beautiful is a moving and poignant tale of one father's sacrifice to save not just his young son's life but his innocence in the face of one of the most evil acts ever perpetrated by the human race. --Sean Axmaker
Description
An inspired motion picture masterpiece, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL was nominated for 7 Academy Awards(R) -- winning 3 Oscars, including one for Best Actor Robert Benigni. In this extraordinary tale, Guido (Benigni) -- a charming but bumbling waiter who's gifted with a colorful imagination and an irresistible sense of humor -- has won the heart of the woman he loves and created a beautiful life for his young family. But then, that life is threatened by World War II ... and Guido must rely on those very same strengths to save his beloved wife and son from an unthinkable fate! Honored with an overwhelming level of critical acclaim, this truly exceptional, utterly unique achievement will lift your spirits and capture your heart!

Awful.......2007-09-11
I was extremely disappointed with this movie. I read the raving reviews and thought it would be great but it wasn't. Some parts were funny but I don't think you can make light on something as dreadful as the Holocaust no matter how good the acting is. I think this is taking dark humor too far and I found it extremely offensive and over rated!
and more ******.......2007-09-10
Yes, I cried too. In a world, where we forget to appreciate our beloved ones, Guido gives the most strength to his beloved ones in the most difficult times. A smiling face, a loving heart, a courage to give that strength to his family in the most beautiful way. a sharp thinking capability... With his love, Dora and Joshua find the direction to survive and with his love, I am sure both Dora and Joshua find the way to move on... lovely...
a truly unforgettable film................2007-09-01
I had the privilege of seeing LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (LA VITA E BELLA) in the movie theater, right after star and co-director Roberto Benigini had won a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actor. There is no other word to describe it. This film is beautiful, and it definitely makes you appreciate and value life more.
I know some people have trouble picturing a film whose subject matter is the Holocaust that starts out as such a bubbly comedy. But, that is exactly the tone that the director and writers (Roberto Benigni and Vincenzo Cerami) developed, and it's brilliant. Guido (Benigni) is a young, Jewish-Italian man with a wonderful sense of humor and a gusto for life. He falls madly in love with Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), a beautiful woman who he continues to pursue (even when she is engaged to be married to another man!). Of course, love conquers all. However, the second half takes a decidedly different turn when he and his son (Giorgio Cantarini) are placed in a concentration camp. This is when Guido's inventiveness and imagination become invaluable tools in shielding his son from the horrors they encounter there.
It is rare that I see a fillm that leaves me so breathless as this one does, ten years later. This is the film that Roberto Benigni will be most remembered for, and for good reason. I suggest that you watch this for your heart, your soul and your spirit. Be sure to have a box of kleenex and prepare to lose yourself in the spellbinding beauty of this movie.
Beautiful Story.......2007-08-09
The love of a man for his wife and son is remarkably touching. This is a very well done movie. I enjoy it every time I see it!
Life is Beautiful is Beautiful.......2007-08-03
My entire family adored this charming tragicomedy about life in Italy just before and during World War II. Director and star Roberto Benigni has created a fairy tale with an edge. An irrepressible Jewish waiter falls in love with a socialite, winning her away from her Fascist fiance with a mix of humor, coincidence, opportunism and whimsy. They have a son and find themselves in the midst of a Jewish pogrom that transports them to an unnamed concentration camp. Father "Guido" uses the same skill set that he used to win his wife to protect his four-year old son from the brutality that surrounds him, convincing him that the camp is an elaborate holiday and game in which the winner will receive a new tank.
Benigni's performance (which won a Best Actor Academy Award--rare for a foreign language film) is a masterwork--manic, touching, hilarious and affecting in about every possible way. The scene where he translates a German soldier's camp instructions for the benefit of his son is priceless ("No lollipops! Don't even think about asking!") His wife Dora is beautiful and bemused in the first act and exists more symbolically, but still powerfully in the second. The very young actor who plays son Joshua is amazing--portraying the wide-eyed enthusiasm of his father combined with a mistrustful wisdom well beyond his years.
Like the recent French film "Amelie", "Beatiful" has a whimsical soul. The concentration camp sometimes seems a little too smooth, a feature that Spielberg films on serious subjects are sometimes accused of. Still, the Germans were known for the their organization and order, and the story doesn't really need grisly depictions of much of what went on during the Holocaust to make its point. The production design also fits with the fairy tale feeling of the tale.
My wife doesn't much care for foreign films, but said she felt like she'd learned some Italian watching this one. My daughter doesn't like foreign films or period movies. Both loved "Life is Beautiful." You will too.

A Beautiful Mind manages to twist enough pathos out of John Nash's incredible life story to redeem an at-times goofy portrayal of schizophrenia. Russell Crowe tackles the role with characteristic fervor, playing the Nobel prize-winning mathematician from his days at Princeton, where he developed a groundbreaking economic theory, to his meteoric rise to the cover of Forbes magazine and an MIT professorship, and on through to his eventual dismissal due to schizophrenic delusions. Of course, it is the delusions that fascinate director Ron Howard and, predictably, go astray. Nash's other world, populated as it is by a maniacal Department of Defense agent (Ed Harris), an imagined college roommate who seems straight out of Dead Poets Society, and an orphaned girl, is so fluid and scriptlike as to make the viewer wonder if schizophrenia is really as slick as depicted. Crowe's physical intensity drags us along as he works admirably to carry the film on his considerable shoulders. No doubt the story of Nash's amazing will to recover his life without the aid of medication is a worthy one, his eventual triumph heartening. Unfortunately, Howard's flashy style is unable to convey much of it. --Fionn Meade

Thank You for Saving My Life...Literally.......2007-08-18
I first saw this movie about five years ago. My wife had asked me to go see it with her. After we watched, I said to her, "I don't know how to tell you this, but I got to tell you something, and it is kinda hard to say." She said, "Go ahead, honey." So I said to her, "I don't know what that stuff is that Crowe has in that movie......" She says, "go on." "But I have it, too." She then says, "Well, we got to get you some help." The next day she tells me the soonest a psychiatrist can see me is in a month and a half. I tell her that I can't last that long. I need to see someone right away. A psychiatrist tells her to take me to the nearest ER room at a hospital.
Sitting in front of the ER doctor at a large hospital in the Denver suburbs, the doctor asks me, "So what's bothering you?" I tell him, "Oh, nothing really." (I'm afraid they are going to lock me up forever.) My wife across the little room says, "You have to tell him everything, to get help." So I proceed to tell him, "I'm hearing voices which are telling me to do terrible things. They are loud command voices, they don't stop, and I can't deal with it anymore. They say people in the neighborhood are plotting to kill me and my family."
He says, "Oh, you must have a microchip implanted in the back of your head."
I exclaim back, "No, no, that's not possible! I never had a microchip operation... I have a tooth. It's in the back of my mouth. It has a large filling in it. I got it when I was 15. The dentist put two pins in it, and the pins act like a harmonic receiver for a satellite in the sky." Then I paused again and looked over at my wife, and she said, "You got to keep going." I continued, "They are sending the voices to me through this tooth, and they can hear what I am saying when I speak. I am part of a super-secret military project, and they're communicating with me. For future one-man missions."
The doctor then left, and came back a few minutes later with two armed hospital guards. He read me 'my rights', and informed me that the state of Colorado allows him to put me on a '3-day involuntary commitment' to get me medication and counseling. I was ready to jump right out of there, but my wife said, "They are going to help you, but you have to let them." So I went along with them to the psych ward of that general hospital, and they helped me by giving me a 10mg dose of tongue dissolvable Zyprexa, and I slept for about 19 hours. When I woke up, they let me talk to the doctor and some counselors. The medication gave me a clear brain, and stopped the voices and delusions. They released me to my wife that day (the day after admitting me). My wife was an angel.
This movie, that "3-day commitment", and the doctors & nurses with the meds are some of the best things that have ever happened in my life. This movie gave me the courage to seek help. It was very hard to take the news that I was not part of a special super-secret military project for 19 years. But instead I have a serious, chronic, incurable, brain disease. But that's life, that's my life. I now accept the fact that I have the brain disorder known as schizoaffective. It reminds me of the movie, "Predator". And it terrifies me.
Other people here have commented that this film does not portray the actual life of John Nash. Well, maybe it's because the real story of schizophrenia is too depressing for people to want to pay money to see. There simply is no pretty Hollywood ending to our story. And besides, Hollywood has skewed other films in the past that were supposedly about the life of a real person.
One that comes to mind so unnervingly is the movie, "Emily Rose." Talk about a farce! Oh, this movie was "INSPIRED BY" the life of Emily Rose. And then two consultants to the film with the title of Msr. in front of their names (this stands for Catholic monsignor priest) proceeded to make a girl's paranoid manic psychotic episode look like demon possession. That was cute. And what a cruel joke it is to all of us who suffer from psychotic brain disease (about 8 million US people - paranoid schizophrenia, psychotic bipolar I, psychotic depression & post-partum psychosis).
I can hardly wait until the researchers find a cure for this illness. Hopefully within the next 20 to 30 years. I hope and pray for this everyday. I'm sure John does, too. For the sake of our children.
You won't hear from many people with psychotic based-illness. It is simply too horrific to talk about. You can take my word for it. I say this because you all have paid a lot of money to send me to some of the world's best schools. Schools which uniquely teach soldiers how to look fear in its face, to confront it, and then to walk right through it. As I have posted before, and in spite of this myriad of specialized training, it still terrifies me to talk about this disease like I am doing now, and it takes a terrible toll.
To everyone who had a part in making this film, thank you. Thank you for saving my life, literally. I really appreciate that. So do my wife and two children. And thank you, John, for telling your story. You have helped us all. You will never know how much, because we simply cannot talk about it. As you already know.
Russell was robbed!.......2007-07-21
Russell should have received the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Nash... talk about being robbed... LOL!
A beautiful way to tell a tragically uplifting story..........2007-06-20
The real life story of John Nash plays out as engaging and interesting as some of our more well thought out fiction. Now, as some have already noted whether here or in media scrutiny, not all of this film follows Nash's life accurately. Some of this film is fictionalized, but isn't that for the most part what always happens. Just because it's a true story doesn't mean Hollywood doesn't feel the need to tamper. At least here the tampering does not by any means take away from the power within the film and the performances that dominate. Nash's life story is still portrayed effortlessly and beautifully, compelling and entertaining and full of just about every aspect of a priceless and award worthy film. `A Beautiful Mind' truly has it all.
Russell Crowe here delivers a breathtaking performance as John Nash, a brilliant math student who gets to the top only to tumble back down to the bottom at breakneck speed. Living a life that in the end appears mostly a lie, Nash eventually is diagnosed with schizophrenia. At this point in his life, married with a child and working a steady job, Nash and those around him are finding it difficult to differentiate reality from the creations of his mind. The movie then turns its focus on Nash's recovery and the effect his sickness has on those closest to him.
Crowe is truly the star here, swallowing whole this character driven study on the human spirit and determination to survive. He engulfs the screen and makes this mans plight come alive for the audience. What's commendable here is that Howard's directing and of course the script, adapted from Sylvia Nasar's biography, allow for the viewer to really connect with the entire cast, most importantly Nash himself. This proves effective because once Nash's life is shattered before our very eyes and he begins to crumble we are brought to a place deep within our emotions that would have been impossible to touch had we not come to know Nash before his world came tumbling down. We fall in love with this man and so we feel his pain, his wife's pain and are emotionally distressed alongside them both.
Alongside Crowe both Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany deliver astounding performances as Nash's longsuffering wife and imaginary best friend. Jennifer's Oscar winning performance is full of so much life, so much pain and emotional attachment that we can relate to and understand her feelings every step of the way. We watch her transform from this woman who knew how to control the things around her, including Nash, to a woman scared of what was going to happen next, a woman who felt detached from all she thought was real. Bettany's portrayal of Nash's college roommate is high spirited and refreshing. He serves as our brightest comic relief but also our biggest heartbreak as we watch Nash realize he never truly had his friendship at all.
Crowe, one of our finest actors, is a true chameleon and he engages himself so far into this role that he becomes John Nash, and watching that transformation is utterly rewarding. His determination and fervor are so invested in this performance from the moment he appears on screen that one is automatically drawn to him and connected to him entirely. From start to finish `A Beautiful Mind' proves itself worthy of our attention and consideration and is sure to astonish and amaze you. From its heartbreaking story to its brilliantly crafted direction to its powerhouse performances, `A Beautiful Mind' is a winner from the top of its head to the tip of its toes. The well rounded supporting cast including the likes of Ed Harris and Josh Lucas continue to astonish in their respective roles and aid in delivering one of the warmest and beautifully articulated Hollywood experiences. This, my friends, is what going to the movies is all about.

CROWE is beautiful in this quadruple Academy Award winner! Hats off to Director Ron Howard too!.......2007-03-27
Russell Crowe did an incredible job of portraying the real-life story of Princeton Professor John Nash, a brilliant mathematician who won the 1994 Nobel Prize, despite his dysfunction due to schizophrenia. My heart went out to this amazing man for all he suffered; his perseverance tugged at my heart strings; and I was heartened by his wife standing beside him through thick and thin. I'm highly encouraged that Professor Nash managed to kick his dependence on the schizophrenia medicine and go on to reach some of his major goals in life.
Thanks to the brilliant directing of Ron Howard, A Beautiful Mind is one of those bittersweet movies with a satisfying ending that left me feeling good about life and the human conditiion ... a lasting impression of "hope."
Russell Crowe and the entire cast are to be commended for their sensitive, caring performances in this fine drama.

This town drama from Ted Demme centers on former classmates coming together for their 10-year reunion. Scott Rosenberg's (Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead) script thoughtfully passes over the usual grumblings of young adults who can't believe they still live in the same snowbound town. They accept--even welcome--their blue-collar jobs, whether plowing snow or cutting hair. Willie (Timothy Hutton), the lone wanderer, returns to his listless house in a state of flux, the piano-bar circuit wearing thin as is his relationship with Tracy, a well-off attorney (Annabeth Gish). He isn't the only one with problems. Tommy (Matt Dillon) occasionally sleeps with his now-married high school sweetheart Darian (Lauren Holly) while the earnest Sharon (Mira Sorvino) is left to wait. Paul (another thickheaded role for Michael Rapaport) refuses to commit to Jan (Martha Plimpton) until it's too late. Paul is enamored with the idea of the supermodel (the title's "beautiful girls") that, he believes, can make life perfect. It's a very satisfying comedy, with some forced poignancy (Willie's description of Tracy as a "seven and a half" comes off as a death sentence). Rosie O'Donnell's dissertation on why Playboy and Penthouse have ruined males' expectations is much like Meg Ryan's orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally...: it's hilarious, even memorable, never wholly believable.
The two wild cards thrown into Beautiful Girls give the film its kick. Uma Thurman enters as the local barkeep's (Pruitt Taylor Vince) radiant cousin. From the big city, she can flirt with the awestruck guys and still keep her head. Willie's real emotional tug is from Marty, the precocious 13-year-old neighbor. If you didn't see Natalie Portman's sophisticated work in the The Professional, her performance here will come as a revelation. You deeply believe that Willie and Marty are connected despite their age difference. Their courtship will never come to be, but the way the two talk (and talk some more) about their lives is the most insightful part of Rosenberg's script. Everyone's so comfortable in his or her roles that you may truly feel sad when the film ends. --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews:
A comical and insightful jaunt.......2007-04-15
Beautiful Girls is a very light-hearted comedy about a small town class reunion. It does hover dangerously close to some dark, abstract notions that frequently threaten the overall good vibes. That makes the movie entertaining and realistic. Luckily it teeters on the positive side and never falters at any point.
It's directed by Ted Demme(Blow)and it won a CEC award for Best Screenplay. Its completely filled with clever dialogue. At times it might seem a little glib, but it covers its tracks with responses from it's characters, like when one says "you stay awake nights thinking up this (stuff)".
Many of the characters do fall into stereotypes, but this is inconsequential because it doesn't feel forced. Everyone has their odd little quirks that make them unusual and interesting.
Matt Dillon is great in a typecast role as the kinda shady womanizer. Michael Rappaport is awesome as his annoying buddy. Timothy Hutton is the one guy who realizes he doesn't need a drastic change. And a young Natalie Portman steals the show as the "little neighborhood Lolita".
There are many scenes with buddies drinking, saying stupid stuff, drooling over beautiful girls. Almost all the guy's dreams seem somewhat quixotic.
I think this is one of the most underrated comedies ever. I always feel better after watching it.
Willie C! Stay cool! Stay cool forever.......2007-04-11
One of the best and a collectible & worth watching the movie for just this part
"Supermodels are beautiful girls, Will. A beautiful girl can make you dizzy, like you've been drinking Jack and Coke all morning. Se can make you feel high with the single greatest commodity known to man--promise. Promise of a better day. Promise of a greater hope. Promise of a new tomorrow. This particular aura can be found in the gaze of a beautiful girl. In her smile, in her soul, how she makes every rotten little thing about life seem like it's going to be okay. The supermodels are bottled promise. A beautiful girl is all powerful, and that's as good as love"
This movie is just ok...........2007-02-01
Frankly, I bought this DVD only because Natalie Portman is in it. The movie has this prevailing forced quality to it: Ms.Portman's performance is good, but seeems forced(=unconvincing as 13 year old) The same goes for Uma Thurman(watch the dancing scean with Paul). The jokes and dialogues are funny, yet not really fresh even thouth it's not recycled materials. I think this is the director Ted Demme's first ensemble cast movie, and it kinda shows.
I beg to differ (a little).......2006-11-15
This is a fine film. The characters are older young adults, barely young enough to be able to characterize this as a "rite-of-passage" film. I disagree with those who suggest that the characters ultimately give up on the dreams of their youth and "settle" for an inevitable and dull adulthood. From my 58 year old vantage point, they are leaving their shallow and immature adolescence for the deeper and more meaningful commitments to mature, real (not mythologized) partners who love them for who they are. They are ready to embrace their lives both present and future and let go of the ever more distant and irrelevant past.
The Hutton character is certainly tempted by Thurman. Though he admires and cares for the 13 yr old Portman character, he is always aware that her desire for him will not be returned by him. He relates to her impatience to grow up, recognizes her puppylove feelings for him, but never considers abusing her affection for him.
This is a wonderful ensemble cast. Though more polished than its predecessor, this film reminds me of the early John Sayles film "Return Of The Secaucus Seven".
Willie and Marty.......2006-10-08
This movie is about the growing relationship between a surprised, smitten Willie and beautiful girl Marty. It's all we care about. Everything else is window dressing to these two.

spectacular introduction to HD DVD.......2007-08-25
this is so very beautiful and peaceful - a great introduction to HD DVD - picture quality is excellent - sound is very good - I like "new age" instrumental music and these selections are very good - stress just melts away - some are naturally better than others, but they are all great - good overview of the series - very highly recommended - I am ordering the entire series
Almost Like Being There.......2007-08-23
There's about 5 to 10 minutes visit in each area. It's similar to camping out in these areas with the nature sounds coming through. The music is monotonous. I would've liked to seen a little bit of narration here & there with the music in the background during the narration. If you want to relax & see Landscapes from different parts of the World, this is the way to do it.
Unable to play.......2007-08-13
Doesn't want to play on a regular DVD player. On actual disk it states that it will only play on a HD DVD player. This was unknown info when I purchased the dvd.
A glorious visual and audio experience.......2007-08-07
Filmed in 1080i high definition with 5.1 surround sound, and available in both DVD and HD-DVD format, Living Landscapes The World's Most Beautiful Places earns its title with a glorious visual and audio experience. The cinematography does not disrupt the soothing images and sounds of nature with verbal narration; birds, ocean waves, and calm background music accompanies the breathtakingly beautiful display. A loop feature allows one to play the DVD for pleasant background effect as if hanging an ever-changing picture. Enthusiastically recommended for armchair travelers, and anyone who wants to play a DVD solely to relax and enjoy the wonders of natural creation. 75 minutes, color.
Pretty and Relaxing.......2007-08-01
Very very pretty and relaxing. Good to just chill out and relax or as a background to the party or a dinner. Just like looking out the window and with some soft classical type music playing in background.
This one has a bit of everything, and they are all good. There is also full hour version for each envinroment if you find one that you like in particular.
I dunno what the other reviewer is smoking, but i found the quality to be excellent both video and sound wise.

Stone.......2007-09-04
A beautifully produced video and looks gorgeous on my 1080i projector. It's a good work to show off your equipments and how HD works in real life. And, that's all you can get. Music, I think, is a bit artificial.
All scenes recorded in the disc are of course really nice. Together with the soft playing music, I bet you'll fall asleep in 20 minutes, like me do. This will be my last buy on "showing off natural scenes stuff." I'll turn to something which really documenting the nature.
Ummmm Okay.......2007-08-13
Not sure how I got this one. I wouldn't have paid for it, butit does make for a nice screen saver. . .
Wow! what a great use for HD!.......2007-07-01
This program makes me glad I turned my livingroom into an HD home theatre. We can't believe how fantastic it is to be transported to what truly seem to be some of the world's most beautiful places in the comfort of our own home. The colors, the clarity and most of all the amazing places I've never seen make this a breathtaking experience. The natural surround-sound is over the top.... I seriously thought there were songbirds in my house when the Costa Rica and Hawaii chapters were playing. I'm tempted to get some of the other programs in this collection.
Nice looking ,but ..........2007-06-29
This disc is in 1080i not p. The music is ok. Good thing I got this for $17.

On the short list for the "world's toughest place to live" award, Southwest Africa's Namib Desert houses a wealth of intriguing creatures, featured in Jamie Uys's Animals are Beautiful People. As various beasts, bugs, fish, and fowl appear, a soft-spoken narrator pinpoints behaviors that mirror human ones, often inventing whimsical tales meant to inspire chuckles or sighs. A male wart hog, a "homely bachelor," lands a "wife" with a penchant for redecorating his burrow; austere maribou glower like disapproving undertakers; a billowy, nameless fish is called a dizzy blonde. Uys's respect for the harsh lifestyle these creatures endure clearly displays itself amid the comical sound effects and Fantasia-lite melodies that infuse the 90-minute show. The result: a richly informative, beautifully filmed lesson in the power of adaptation and the lush wildlife that inhabits the cradle of civilization. Six years after completing this project, Uys went on to create The Gods Must Be Crazy. (Ages 5 and older) --Liane Thomas
Description
From the creator of The Gods Must Be Crazy. Away in their own mysterious world, far from the prying eyes of people, Africa's animals lead lives of humor and horror, danger and dignity.

not your average movie. one of the most enjoyable films I have ever seen. I highly recomend it for people of all ages. a keeper.
Great Classic Movie.......2007-09-01
I bought this movie for my dad. I also bought God's Must Be Crazy 1 & 2. He loved all of them. We watched them together as a family and everyone enjoyed themselves. Hilarious! Want good clean fun and beautiful scencery and if you love animals, Animals are Beautiful People is for you!
Wild Life Adventure.......2007-08-24
It is great, full of funny scenes of animals in the wild. You can watch it over and over and laugh all the time. Some of it is not funny, it is life. Some sad, but then things happen. All in all, it is very enjoyable, beautiful, colorful, and some things I had never seen on other animal clips.
animals are beautiful people.......2007-08-14
my dad loves this film watched it years ago and was so pleased to watch it again
A Decent Nature Show.......2007-08-07
Watched this before on HBO when young and really enjoyed the drunken animal scene, even though now I realize most of the movie was probably staged. The scenic views captured (even though from the early 70's) were as enjoyable to me as one's shot now with the most recent technology . Would highly recommend for a gift for those who love watching animal planet and the like.

Amazon.com essential video
This absolute winner, based on a stage play by Jonathan Harvey and adapted by him, is a kind of enchanted, urban slice-of-life tale about a gay teen, Jamie (Glen Berry), who is in love with the boy next door, Ste (Scott Neal). Hampering Jamie's progress on the romantic front is his fear that his mother (Linda Henry) will find out, as well as concern over complicating Ste's existing problems. Beautiful Thing is a relationship movie, to be sure, but that description doesn't really describe the buoyant tone of this British television production. Democratic in its inclusive regard for each character (whether camera-pretty or not), the film--well-directed by Hettie Macdonald--is full of surprises. Chief among them is the terrific personality of Jamie's mum, a strong and independent woman who truly worries over and adores her son. But this is a movie involved in a kind of happy dialogue with itself: the tunes of Mama Cass, for instance, play a part in both the story and overall ambience, while a strategic placement of the Rodgers and Hammerstein chestnut "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" during an act of love is fun and exciting. --Tom Keogh
Description
A pair of teenage boys growing up in a working-class neighborhood become aware of their homosexuality. While both were vaguely aware they might be gay, neither had ever acted on their impulses. Once they decide that they're attracted to each other, neither is sure just what to do. Winner of 4 International Film Festival Awards.

Touching.......2007-09-04
Great story of two boys falling in love. Sits in the important part of my collection.
The Movie.......2007-08-31
The movie was pretty good. It also has closed caption. Closed Caption is a plus. Because I am hearing impaired.
The cover is also good. because it shows part of the movie of what is about. so, Its good.
Amazing Movie :).......2007-07-18
I love the story to this movie. The acting is great, the plots good, and some parts throughout the movie really hit my heart and made me feel what the boys were feeling. This is definately a movie everyone should see. It kinda funny because Im 19 and this is pretty much the same way me and my current boyfriend met.
I RECOMMEND TO ALL!!!!!
A Flawed Thing.......2007-07-16
Many gay reviewers unfortunately have not been balanced in rating films like this and rate it so highly primarily due to a misguided loyalty to anything gay rather than things of quality.
This film has a touching storyline at times and I have to admire that, however it is far too flawed in its disjointed and very assuming storytelling to deserve such a high rating and content wise the love story, coming of age and coming out may be beautiful but the drug content, language and sudden coming out of many characters who were straight without clear explaination of the reversal of sexuality is more than a little confusing.
An average film dipicting poor, violent and crass British folks and the love between two teenage boys in this enviroment. Has some very touching moments, but overall highly flawed.
The DVD would also have benefitted from optional subtitles, like most do, for those of us who find the heavy British accents hard to understand.
good story.......2007-07-13
This is a touching story that reminds me of some things that happened in my own life. Two boys in love with each other does happen. And it truly is a beautiful thing.

Opposites attract in this love story for the younger set. Carlos is a straight-laced poor boy working his way toward a better life. Nicole is a rich girl with a wild streak who can't seem to stay out of trouble. Can it be that they're meant for each other? Yes, of course it can. Crazy/Beautiful follows a familiar pattern--the two young lovers come from different worlds, and no one else understands them--but has a few intelligent wrinkles to the standard star-crossed plot. Nicole's dad, for example, actually likes Carlos and worries that Nicole will corrupt him. Kirsten Dunst and Jay Hernandez give assured performances as the young lovers, and the movie's message of tolerance comes across without being preachy. As teen love stories go, you could do far worse. Adults may be left cold by Crazy/Beautiful, but teens--especially those with a dramatic streak--will enjoy this well-intentioned romance. --Ali Davis
Description
Fate steps in and brings together two high school seniors from opposite sides of the track in this sexy, fun, and energetic story of first love. Nicole (Kirsten Dunst, BRING IT ON) is the 17-year-old troubled daughter of a wealthy congressman who never met a rule she didn't break. Carlos (hot newcomer Jay Hernandez) is an A-student with big dreams who endures a two-hour bus ride every morning to attend high school in an upscale L.A. neighborhood. Their innocent flirtations quickly develop into passionate love, but Nicole's self-destructive behavior threatens their relationship and puts Carlos' promising future in jeopardy. Will their intense passion keep them together despite the objections of their families, or will Carlos be forced to plan his future ... without Nicole? Surprises lie at every turn in this wildly seductive and critically acclaimed drama.
Customer Reviews:
Far from rehashed territory, gives a nice spin on a tired subject..........2007-07-09
I've always been an advocate for Kirsten Dunst. I feel she's a brilliantly talented actress who chooses challenging and engaging roles for herself. She shines in just about everything and continues to impress me with each selected performance. That said, I was forced to see this movie. It just looked to me like another in a long line of recycled and regurgitated teen love stories that plays out the same way and never initiates any real care or concern on the part of the audience. I did however see this film, in the theater at that, and have to say that by the films end I was in complete shock. `Crazy/Beautiful' is a genuinely great film, from the script to the acting to the films execution. While the subject material may appear like `Romeo & Juliet' light, it veers enough from its pre-chosen path to establish originality and demand rewatchability.
`Crazy/Beautiful' casts Dunst as trouble child Nicole, a misunderstood daughter of a wealthy congressman who battles her stepmother every step of the way and vies for attention through one screw up after another. She doesn't take anything serious, not school, not boys, not anything but then she by chance meets Carlos, a boy who is her complete opposite. Carlos studies hard, gets up extra early to travel a long distance to attend a good school so he can make something of himself. He takes everything seriously, that is until he meets Nicole. Their relationship is explosive and, according to their families, dangerous. Nicole's father even pleads with Carlos to stay far away from his daughter, not because he's concerned for her well being but because he's concerned for Carlos, fearing that Nicole with ruin him. It's in these small changes that `Crazy/Beautiful' distinguishes itself apart from the other fluff.
As the film progresses we can see the relationship between the two of them bend and break only to reform stronger than before. It's actually a realistic look at teenage relationships today. Of course it's dramatized for Hollywood but if you really take a second to analyze what you're watching you'll see that it all rings forth very true. Nicole is far from a bad child, just a misunderstood one who craves love and attention she's not receiving from those who should be handing it out to her unconditionally. What I love most about this film is that instead of really painting Nicole's father and stepmother as downright evil they are portrayed realistically, as confused adults who have no idea how to handle someone they feel is bucking them constantly. As much as the audience is persuaded to hate the stepmother I feel that in the end she's given credibility. This is a film that exposes the faults of all parties involved.
What really drives this film home is the powerful performance given by Kirsten Dunst. She's amazing here, giving so much genuine emotion, investing so much heart into Nicole that she breathes to life before us. Dunst is effective throughout, but scenes like her drunken breakdown at the feet of her father are especially effective, awards worthy even. How this girl keeps escaping Oscar's eye is beyond me. Newcomer Jay Hernandez is wonderful as well as Carlos and proves he has what it takes to light up the screen, but against Dunst riveting performance he's a little dry. I was very pleased with Bruce Davison's portrayal of Nicole's father and of course was smitten with Taryn Manning who just explodes with charm and charisma as Nicole's BFF Maddy. Great film overall, one that desires to be looked at and beautifully lives up to its name.
NICOLE / CARLOS : A LOVE STORY.......2007-03-24
John Stockwell's CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL describes a conformist love story in an environment that doesn't react the way it should react. In a mainstream movie, the Mexican parents of Carlos Nuñez would have cherished Nicole Oatley with the usual Latin warmth and Nicole's family would have rejected Carlos because of his social and race background. Congressman Tom Oakley, even if he's a member of the Democrat party, wouldn't have accepted that his daughter sees the son of a chicano. Thanks to the unusual handling of this love story, in addition to the exceptional performance of Kirsten Dunst, CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL deserves to appear in your rental list.
A DVD zone Mamas and Papas.
yin-yang.......2006-10-24
You know how some movies are such an intense experience that you feel changed in some way? And how you can't stop thinking about how powerful certain scenes were? Yeah. This is one of those.
The way Nicole and Carlos complete each other is incredible. At first, Nicole is lost and destructive. The solid schedule of homework, football practice, and family obligations deteriorates for Carlos as he becomes engulfed in Nicole's world of chaos and drama. But their love is something real, strong enough to make everything change. Carlos realizes that he has to make sacrifices in order to save Nicole from herself, and Nicole realizes that she's ready to become the person she's always wanted to be. Carlos helps her find the way home.
This is an awesome movie that shows us how beautiful true love is, and how crazy it would be to settle for anything less.
"Our skin looks so beautiful together.".......2006-05-19
If 'Crazy/Beautiful' served no purpose other than a template for young talent consider it done, for all three young stars (Kirsten Dunst, Jay Hernandes & Tarryn Manning) all put there best feet forward in this critically acclaimed teen drama. The story, while it's been done before, has never quite been done this well. Nicole (Dunst in one of her BEST performances to date) is a rich girl with a wild side who continues to stress her father and push her stepmother further away. Carlos (Hernandes in his breakout role) on the other hand is a poor boy trying hard to make the best of himself, traveling further than need be, waking up earlier than need be, all to get a better education and get a chance to be something bigger than he is. When they meet it's lust at first sight, but as they grow together they realize how much they need each other. This is a touching family film that shows well how a childs feeling of neglect and unwantedness can damage there relationships and even result in their inability for better relationships in the future. Kirsten Dunst is truly a star and she shines so much in this film delivering what has to be her most stunning and commanding performance to date. This is far from just your typical teen film but it explores real issues with taste and tact and proves itself to be a very very good movie.

Thank You for Saving My Life...Literally.......2007-08-18
I first saw this movie about five years ago. My wife had asked me to go see it with her. After we watched, I said to her, `I don't know how to tell you this, but I got to tell you something, and it is kinda hard to say." She said, "Go ahead, honey." So I said to her, "I don't know what that stuff is that Crowe has in that movie......" She says, "go on." "But I have it, too." She then says, "Well, we got to get you some help." The next day she tells me the soonest a psychiatrist can see me is in a month and a half.
He says, "Oh, you must have a microchip in the back of your head."
I exclaim back, "No, no, that's not possible! I never had a chip operation...
He read me my rights, and informed me that the state of Colorado allows him to put me on a 3-day involuntary commitment to get me medication and counseling.
This movie, that "3-day commitment", and the doctors & nurses with the meds are some of the best things that have every happened in my life. This movie gave me the courage to seek help. It is hard to take the news that I was not part of a special super-secret military project for 19 years. But instead I have a serious, chronic, incurable, brain disease. But that's life, that's my life. I now accept the fact that I have the brain disorder known as schizoaffective. It reminds me of the movie, "Predator". And it terrifies me.
Other people here have commented that the film does not portray the actual life of John Nash.
And what a cruel joke it is to all of us who suffer from psychotic brain disease (about 8 million US people - paranoid schizophrenia, psychotic bipolar I, psychotic depression & post-partum depression).
As you already know.
schizophrenia.......2007-06-08
An excellent overview of the struggles and tortuous life of a schizophrenic. It brings to the attention of the public the pain and suffering both of the person who is mentally ill, and the caregiver. The movie is excellent.
Emotionally Powerful.......2007-05-08
This film was just flat out enticing. I have watched it over and over again, and it never seems to lose its value. Crowe is a great actor, and pulls off his role with perfection. This is one of my most favorite movies ever, and is one of the very few that ever made me tear up. Some may find the beginning to be a little slow, but after about twenty minutes of watching, you'll be hooked. Don't miss this one!!!
A beautiful mind.......2007-02-06
Excellent ! A story especially close to me as my ex-wife suffers from this same disorder.
Wow wonderful movie do not let anyone give it away to you.......2006-10-17
I saw this movie when I was working at a mental hospital. I helped me to understand what schizophrenia might be like to some people. If you want to know about that watch this and do not learn to much about the movie it will reck it. Just know that this is very well done and respectfully done. It is based on a true story, but not a documentary. The acting is excellent. If you want to understand more watch this. It is a beautiful movie.
