Bean, Bean, maniacal nut / The more you watch, you bust a gut! First unleashed in 1989, this sketch series was embraced by PBS viewers in the United States. In the tradition of the great silent clowns, Rowan Atkinson created a character with universal and multi-generational appeal (the sketches have little dialogue and are driven by often ingenious physical comedy). Like Bart Simpson, the resourceful, mischievous, and sometimes malevolent Bean is the inner child incarnate who acts on the impulses polite society normally represses. Atkinson has described Bean as "a 9-year-old boy, with an apparent lack of worldly experience, but an ingenuity that is quite clever in dealing with problems presented to him." These problems include not knowing a single answer on an exam, tactfully disposing of a revolting restaurant meal, changing into his swimsuit at the beach without first removing his pants, and, most hilariously, getting a turkey stuck on his head (a classic bit reprised in the ill-conceived 1997 feature film).

Atkinson has enjoyed some mainstream success stateside. He was the nervous minister ("...your awfully wedded wife") in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and the voice of Zazu in The Lion King. But he mainly enjoys cult status among British comedy aficionados as a founding member of Not the Nine O'Clock News and the star of the Black Adder series. Bean is his crowning creation. In addition to all 14 episodes, this generous boxed set contains previously unaired sketches, Comic Relief appearances, and a segment about Bean's creation, which serves as a nifty introduction for the uninitiated. It also contains a preview for the new Mr. Bean animated series. This seems redundant. As this collection hilariously demonstrates, Bean is already animated enough. --Donald Liebenson

    4 out of 5 stars Classic Bean.......2007-09-14

Much better than the movies. The movies should have been in this format. You will laugh your socks off. Rowan's comic genius comes out here and really makes Bean a person you can laugh at. This sets the standard!

Mr. Bean - The Whole Bean (Complete Set)

If you enjoy dry English humor combined with ingenious physical comedy, then this DVD set is all you require. I enjoy this set every time I view it. Would make a great Christmas gift!

2 out of 5 stars Wait for the uncut version.......2007-09-13

Just to add to the chorus of other terribly disappointed U.S. Bean fans, there's nothing "complete" about this set -- at least for those of us in America who originally watched the series on PBS.

The excuse given by the show's producers for not including this "extra footage" in A&E's box set is beyond ridiculous. As if British viewers would have minded seeing this footage for the first time???

5 out of 5 stars The kids laugh continuously!.......2007-09-12

I've never seen the Mr. Bean TV series so I did not miss the parts, as mentioned in previous reviews, that were edited. My dad has the VHS set, which I saw parts of and thought was hilarious, so I decided to get The Whole Bean DVD set for my children last Christmas. THEY LOVE IT! Whenever they watch any of the DVDs, they laugh uproariously and continuously! They've brought the DVD set to family gatherings -- all the cousins crowd around to watch it, and the room is filled with laughter.

Mr. Bean is somewhat of a simpleton, and the kids enjoy his childish sense of wonder and naughty pranks. He doesn't speak much, so the youngest children aren't bored with dialogue. The naked scenes of Mr. Bean are hysterical, and the kids are incredulous at his antics. When they're not wathcing it, they talk and joke about Mr. Bean.

Can't wait to see his new movie!

    5 out of 5 stars Finally .......2007-09-11

This is great it has almost every episode. The menus are easy to use and you can skip through the beginning theme with out missing any of the actual episode. The episode is split up into the perfect segments so you can see the skits you love w/o having to watch the whole episode if you prefer not to. Great price for a great product! I love Mr. Bean, or I love Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean.

The extended editions of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings present the greatest trilogy in film history in the most ambitious sets in DVD history. In bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's nearly unfilmable work to the screen, Jackson benefited from extraordinary special effects, evocative New Zealand locales, and an exceptionally well-chosen cast, but most of all from his own adaptation with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, preserving Tolkien's vision and often his very words, but also making logical changes to accommodate the medium of film. While purists complained about these changes and about characters and scenes left out of the films, the almost two additional hours of material in the extended editions (about 11 hours total) help appease them by delving more deeply into Tolkien's music, the characters, and loose ends that enrich the story, such as an explanation of the Faramir-Denethor relationship, and the appearance of the Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor. In addition, the extended editions offer more bridge material between the films, further confirming that the trilogy is really one long film presented in three pieces (which is why it's the greatest trilogy ever--there's no weak link). The scene of Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship added to the first film proves significant over the course of the story, while the new Faramir scene at the end of the second film helps set up the third and the new Saruman scene at the beginning of the third film helps conclude the plot of the second.

To top it all off, the extended editions offer four discs per film: two for the longer movie, plus four commentary tracks and stupendous DTS 6.1 ES sound; and two for the bonus material, which covers just about everything from script creation to special effects. The argument was that fans would need both versions because the bonus material is completely different, but the features on the theatrical releases are so vastly inferior that the only reason a fan would need them would be if they wanted to watch the shorter versions they saw in theaters (the last of which, The Return of the King, merely won 11 Oscars). The LOTR extended editions without exception have set the DVD standard by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Great LONG movies!.......2007-09-16

I bought these as a gift for someone who loves the books and the movies. I never read the books (I tried, but not really my thing), but I enjoyed the movies a lot. The movies were quite lengthy to begin with, and they've been extended. The bonus features will add about a week to your viewing pleasure (not really) - but make sure you've got PLENTY of free time to watch everything back to back!

5 out of 5 stars in short "astounding!".......2007-09-09

firstly i must say one thing, this dvd collection rocks!i have never seen such a grnd packaging!plus it has been extended,if you think thatby seeing the original versions you know a lot then think again!only thing is that it has only english as its viewing language

    5 out of 5 stars Repeat watchability.......2007-09-07

I think that is the highest praise you can give a movie is if you want to watch it over and over again. We must watch one of these at least 8 times a year. My husband likes to pull them out to watch when we fold laundry together. He calls it "Lord of the Laundry". And the extras are wonderful, if a little long. For the Tolkien enthusiast this is the only version to have!

5 out of 5 stars Flawless, perfect, historic -- really, what is there to say?.......2007-08-30

NOTE: If you haven't seen the movies, there may be slight spoilers below in the description of the three movies. Nothing particular, though.

I am of the opinion that the Lord of the Rings film trilogy is one of the best films (all right, film collections) ever made, if not THE best. Everything you could ask for in a movie -- acting, special effects, great dialogue that's heart-lifting but somehow always stops short of being cheesy, emotional depth, storytelling, characters so real you KNOW them, faithfulness to one of the best books of all time -- it's all there, and not only is it great, it's flawless. Perfect. It does what many people thought was impossible -- does justice to the book that really "made" the fantasy genre, the book many people call the best of the 20th century.

Ah, did I forget to mention the music? Howard Shore proved that he's one of the best composers of the age with the soundtracks for Lord of the Rings. He's captured everything, from the simple and happiness-loving hobbits in "Concerning Hobbits" to the tension and edge-of-your-seat drama of "Shelob's Lair" and "The End of All Things" to the heartbreaking yet happy (is that even POSSIBLE?) "The Grey Havens". No matter how much I like or dislike a movie, I think from now on I will buy any soundtrack by Howard Shore.

The Extended version is THE version to have -- really, if you're at all a fan of the book or even the movies alone, you have to have the Extended Versions. The wonderful thing about the LOTR movies is that the theatrical editions stand by themselves perfectly understandably, and yet the Extended Versions don't seem boring or extraneous. To the contrary, they simply enrich the world, add to the tapestry, and satisfy obsessive fans who wanted to see EVERY scene.

The first movie, FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, introduces you to Middle-earth, its races and its characters. It shows you frodo Baggins, a young hobbit who has just inherited his uncle Bilbo's magic ring, only to find that this ring has the power to, in the wrong hands, overthrow all that is good in the world. With eight other companions, Frodo begins his journey toward Mount Doom, the volcano where the Ring must be destroyed.

The second movie is THE TWO TOWERS. After parting with the other members of the Fellowship, Frodo and Sam begin to make their way toward Mordor. At the same time, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli track the orcs that have kidnapped the hobbits Merry and Pippin. Merry and Pippin, though, manage to rescue themselves and fall straight into the path of Treebeard the Ent. It is up to Merry and Pippin to convince the Ents to rise up against the evil wizard Saruman in his stronghold of Isengard.

The third movie, RETURN OF THE KING, is the best, in my opinion -- and, apparently, in the opinion of the people who give out Academy Awards, since ROTK won eleven of them. It involves Pippin and Merry in Gondor and Rohan serving their respective lords, Aragorn's path of self-discovery that leads him to eventually take up his place as King of Gondor, and Frodo, Sam, and Gollum's arduous journey to Mordor, to destroy the Ring.

So many people have said this already that I know I'm just being redundant, but this trilogy really is one of the best films/film collections ever made. I certainly haven't seen better. It's not the sort of thing that will ever be dated, even when the special effects are old (can't see that happening for a few centuries). It's a classic, like the book was, and I honestly can't think of one way Peter Jackson or New Line could have made it better.

This is one movie collection that deserves far more than five stars.

The film pick up six months after the Rage virus has spread throughout the city of London. The United States Army has restored order and is repopulating the quarantined city, when a carrier of the Rage virus enters London and unknowingly re-ignites the spread of the deadly infection, wreaking havoc on the entire population. The virus is not yet dead, and this time it's more dangerous than ever!!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great Flick.......2007-09-17

I thought that this was a great movie, intense and gory! The bloody scenes weren't scary but the possibility of this happening is what scares you the most. Seeing society decimated in both this movie and the prequel is frightening. The thought of being one of the only survivors of a rage virus is thought provoking. Can't wait for the third installment. Worth seeing.

5 out of 5 stars unless your a film student..........2007-09-16

You won't appreciate how great this movie was shot and how rich they are. I was stunned how great this movie was. It is Very different than the 1st. Cause this deals with a generation rebuilding and then shows what happens with chaos. How easily our government would turn on us (and I believe in a situation like this they would) and it was interesting to say the least.

    So what's my complaints?

Spoilers (don't read if you don't wanna know)

    1. Its annoying how fast the father gets turned and I find it hard to believe he would follow them but not successfully eat them.

2.I'm bummed that the military officer died
3.I wanted a little more closure for an ending. Unless they make 28 months later but that would be good only if they come up with a REALLY good story.

Anyways the pros outweigh the cons so therefor I give this 5 stars. Go see a first class horror film done right.

1 out of 5 stars This film sucks.......2007-09-16

This film sucks. I (or you) could create better horror with a bottle of ketsup and an 8mm handcam.

1 out of 5 stars Overly bloody, logically holed, inferior sequel.......2007-09-14

Surprised at the number of good reviews this is getting here.

"I wish Roger Ebert was still writing reviews because he would most definitely decry the "idiot plot" moment of "28 Weeks Later." It comes when Don (Robert Carlyle) decides to plant a wet kiss on his obviously exposed-to-infection wife, despite having seen the Zombies first-hand and knowing full-well how the infection travels and how it has pretty much decimated the population of Britain. I watched this at the Westlake Village Promenade today at 4:50pm with a crowd of mostly teenage guys and even a lot of them were shocked at how ridiculous this was." - Bryce Zabel, moviesmackdown

Big budget blood drenched sequel could have been so much better. Another ridiculous moment comes when they start firebombing part of the city--gee, why not just nuke all of London, if infrastructure destruction is not a problem, then you could be certain of extermination? Then the city is gassed, why didn't they do that in the first place? Well they have a big budget this time and lots of huge fiery explosions are obligatory I guess.

Another thing, the camera shakes WAY too much. What's going on? When the boy sees his father through the door, the camera moves very fast and next thing you know the rage has spread inside the quarantined building. What happened? Only by going slow-motion through this sequence can one see he breaks through a heavy locked steel door by simply banging on it. 300 people are trapped inside but one skinny infected gets in no problemo. The boy sure must be a good sprinter cause he gets from the door to walking over people 40 ft away in .5 seconds. And you know exactly what is going to happen when the rage hits a large crowd of people because it is described in detail in the first film (the airport story). I submit to you, a predictable scene does not make for a scary one no matter how much blood, screaming and unsteady camerawork you throw in.

The original had lots of slow parts with interesting dialog and scenery that made one think and give a breather between the scary parts. This movie just got on the bandwagon of all the bad ultra-bloody films that have come out since the original--Hostel, Saw, Hills Have Eyes, etc and, not to be outdone, is scene after scene of murder and mayhem. The one interesting idea in this one, that some can be immune, is not really developed except to spread the virus to show, you got it, more blood and gore.

The music throughout is THE EXACT SAME as in the original, they couldn't even get original music?? (Maybe they spent too much on those explosions)

Overall this was a big disappointment for me.

3 out of 5 stars Some good ideas... but otherwise a simple rehash of the first film........2007-09-10

    Well...

It was with a lot of anticipation that I went to see 28 WEEKS LATER - specially because I believe the first film, 28 DAYS LATER, was a genuine new look at the beloved Zombie genre.

But I got a little disappointed with this sequel because it does not offer much. The synopsis looks promising: weeks later, the original infected people on the UK dies... and the country is declared safe. So it is up to the British living abroad to come home and start again. And we meet this guy who has two kids (who were abroad on a school trip).

Suddenly, they find his wife (who apparently got attacked and died on the prologue). But she is fine... because she is immune to the disease. But she does has the virus... and it is only a matter of time until the whole thing starts again.

The problem with 28 WEEKS LATER is that the audience does not bond with any character. There is nobody there for the audience to empathize with. I feel some lack of focus in those characters... and the whole film becomes a escapist time-passing.

It was exactly the huge investment in characters that made the first film so good. But here... It's all missing.

That is not to say that there are not great moments. The intro (when the guy loses his wife) is well paced... the scene where the helicopter decapitates (oh, yes!!!) a group of infected is fabulous... and the best sequence is when the survivors drive away from the military dodging poison gas clouds on the streets of London.

    But that's it.

Also... this film contradicts one interesting element presented in the first film. I remember (on 28 DAYS LATER) one character saying the infection had reached other countries. That does not seem to be what we see here. I got a little confused.

Still it is worth a look.

Translating Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean character from British television to the big screen takes a bit of a toll, but there are some hilarious sequences in this popular comedy. Bean, a boy-man twit with a knack for getting into difficult binds (and then making them worse and worse and worse), is a London museum guard who is sent to Los Angeles in the company of the famous painting Whistler's Mother. He's mistaken as an art expert by the well-meaning curator (Peter MacNicol) of an L.A. museum, but Bean's famously eccentric behavior soon causes the poor guy to almost lose his family and job. The insularity of Bean's TV world is sacrificed in this film, and that change diminishes some of the character's appeal. But Atkinson is a man naturally full of comedy, and he doesn't let his fans down. --Tom Keogh

A must have for all familys!

My 12-year old son and his friends think this is the funniest movie of all times. For my 10-year old son's birthday party, he wanted to have a slumber party and watch Bean: The Movie. I must admit, I don't get it, but I didn't buy the movie for myself, so I am rating this purely as a purchase for tweens.

3 out of 5 stars Should Have Been a 5.......2007-08-13

This is a 4 star movie for anyone who has never seen Mr. Bean before. As someone who has the box set and had watched Bean on PBS for many years, this movie just didn't cut it for me. It is basically a reworking of all the very best bits of Rowan from the Bean series with a movie plot around them tying them together. So while there is a new idea or two, for the most part the long term fan has seen all these gags before. I would pick up the Whole Box of Beans to get a true taste of the genius of Rowan Atkinson.

    4 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-08-12

Bean is amazing, This movie is amazing, If you like BEAN, get this movie, you won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Half Baked Bean.......2007-07-11

As questionable an epithet as it may be, this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, barring perhaps, Ace Ventura Pet Detective, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Three Men and a Baby. Of course there are many contenders for that title, more all the time now that Hollywood is in an unimaginative slump, but this movie commits the unforgivable sin of comedy: it gets the tone wrong. Comedy is entirely about tone (as are cartoons). Get it wrong and it doesn't matter how much you get right. Of course, there is plenty else to help the film lope along to its failed finish. The entire cast is miscast except for Rowan Atkinson. How much better these things play in the low budget BBC sets, since they are essentially stand-up mixed with filmed plays.

Compare this to Johnny English, a venerable vehicle for Atkinson's considerable talents and there is no comparison. Why? Because JE is understated and plays off the already subtle Bond canon, itself quintessentially British. Whereas the ghastly mistake that is Bean plays like the worst over the top laugh track and all boisterous American comedy (exactly the sort of non- funny sitcoms that have dominated current American TV since Friends managed to walk the precarious line). Even the animated Bean is better than this flop of a film, although the cartoon series seems superfluous since the live action Bean series is already essentially a cartoon. At any rate, RA deserves better, and he got it with Johnny English, as subtle, brilliant and witty as Bean is dull, heavy handed and boorish. JE is a keeper. Bean is a casualty. C'est le guerre.

A broad science fiction thriller in a classic vein, Equilibrium takes a respectable stab at a Fahrenheit 451-like cautionary fable. The story finds Earth's post-World War III humankind in a state of severe emotional repression: If no one feels anything, no one will be inspired by dark passions to attack their neighbors. Writer-director Kurt Wimmer's monochromatic, Metropolis-influenced cityscape provides an excellent backdrop to the heavy-handed mission of John Preston (Christian Bale), a top cop who busts "sense offenders" and crushes sentimental, sensual, and artistic relics from a bygone era. Predictably, Preston becomes intrigued by his victims and that which they die to cherish; he stops taking his mandatory, mood-flattening drug and is even aroused by a doomed prisoner (Emily Watson). Wimmer's wrongheaded martial arts/dueling guns motif is sheer silliness (a battle over a puppy doesn't help), but Equilibrium should be seen for Bale's moving performance as a man shocked back to human feeling. --Tom Keogh

    5 out of 5 stars impressive.......2007-09-10

if you liked the matrix than this movie is right up your alley. christian bale is the lead actor and does a great job as a sense offense officer and then actually an offender. this movie makes you think of big brother or 1984 great movie. it is easy to picture yourself in this story line and his reactions are very real.

5 out of 5 stars A new generation SCI-FI dramas with fast packaged action! a classic along with Matrix.......2007-09-03

It looks like Matrix marked a new age for Sci-Fi movies by showing deep phylosophycal drama, fast paced action sequences, complex martial arts ballets and doomy/gloomy societies. Anyhow, if you want these ingredients in a sci-fi movie I invite to buy this one! The main plot exposes us to a very good human question as to whether will we be able to annihilate war by supressing our own feelings...Like or not, it is a valid point of view. Very good political view of a not-so-far future and a resistance which tries to gives us back our humanity. The fight sequences, thou not having the complexity of those of Matrix they are really good because they have martial arts and gun shoots everywhere. If you are also looking for very emotional performances take Bale's and Watson's lookings at each other. I highly recommended movie that I am totally satisfied of and if you are a good sci-fi fan just like me, go and get it!

5 out of 5 stars Better than "The Matrix".......2007-09-01

This movie is, in some ways, better than "The Matrix". It definitely gets you thinking about what is important in life, and all the actors are fantastic in their roles. "Equilibrium" is a really nice find among underrated movies.

    3 out of 5 stars Very derivitive.......2007-08-21

The movie was okay in itself, but for virtually the entire viewing I felt I was watching scenes that were re done from other movies. I saw Metropolis, V is for Vendetta, The Matrix, Ultraviolet and Logan's Run to name some of them. It wasn't a bad film, but there was nothing original in it and some of the "spectacular gun battles and fight scenes" described on the box were simply laughable in their execution. All in all, I would recommend watching it, but I question those who say they fell in love with this film or those that state this is the greatest film of all time. It was an hour and 47 minutes of fair entertainment. Not great - not terrible. Just a nice diversion.

3 out of 5 stars An Okay Movie.......2007-08-21

Equilibrium is a movie that portrays a world where human emotion is forbidden. Society is vaccinated with serums to suppress and control human feeling. When one militaristic elite misses his required dose he discovers the beauty of human emotion. Armed by his emotions he decides to destroy the "Big Brother" system he once protected.
The overall concept of the movie sounds interesting; however, the lines and overall story plot were shallow. The characters in the movie lacked depth. It seemed like the director just wanted to focus on the fighting scenes rather than showing any meaningful dialogue between the characters.
The fighting sequences were pretty amazing though. They were artistic and compared to most action movies very unique.
The movie was not as amazing as I expected but at the same time not a complete disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarity from Mr. Bean.......2007-09-15

"The Best of Mr. Bean" contains short vignettes about the happenings in Mr. Bean's life, whether it is a trip to Harrod's at Christmas time, or his birthday, New Year's Eve, after holiday sales, the horror film, church, a trip to the beach or park, a visit from Royalty, and more.

Some of the quirkiness you come to associate with Mr. Bean is just that; it's what makes him tick.

The humor is sometimes pratfall but also intelligent as well. On the other hand, there is a darker side to Mr. Bean that you may not recognize until you see it, so be forewarned, it could be misconstrued. Personally, I felt a bit saddened by some of this darker side, but usually Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) adds just a bit extra that doesn't leave you feeling put out.

There is some adult humor but children will recognize this; for example, the thumb caught in the fly of the pants; there are few if any other double-entendres that would cause parents to be concerned.

I would rate this humor as PG or PG-13, because there is one scene of rear nudity that discerning parents may want their children to miss.

All in all, a funny DVD that has its best moments interspersed with slower parts; sometimes predictable, but classic bits just the same.

Like a Hardy Boys mystery on steroids, National Treasure offers popcorn thrills and enough boyish charm to overcome its rampant silliness. Although it was roundly criticized as a poor man's rip-off of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Da Vinci Code, it's entertaining on its own ludicrous terms, and Nicolas Cage proves once again that one actor's infectious enthusiasm can compensate for a multitude of movie sins. The contrived plot involves Cage's present-day quest for the ancient treasure of the Knights Templar, kept secret through the ages by Freemasons past and present. Finding the treasure requires the theft of the Declaration of Independence (there are crucial treasure clues on the back, of course!), so you can add "caper comedy" to this Jerry Bruckheimer production's multi-genre appeal. Nobody will ever accuse director Jon Turtletaub of artistic ambition, but you've got to admit he serves up an enjoyable dose of PG-rated entertainment, full of musty clues, skeletons, deep tunnels, and harmless adventure in the old-school tradition. It's a load of hokum, but it's fun hokum, and that makes all the difference. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

From Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, and Jon Turteltaub, director of PHENOMENON, comes NATIONAL TREASURE. It's the thrilling, edge-of-your-seat adventure starring Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage (1995 Best Actor, LEAVING LAS VEGAS) as Benjamin Franklin Gates. Ever since he was a boy, Gates has been obsessed with finding the legendary Knights Templar Treasure, the greatest fortune known to man. As Gates tries to find and decipher ancient riddles that will lead him to it, he's dogged by a ruthless enemy (Sean Bean, THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy) who wants the riches for himself. Now in a race against time, Gates must steal one of America's most sacred and guarded documents -- the Declaration of Independence -- or let it, and a key clue to the mystery, fall into dangerous hands. Heart-pounding chases, close calls, and the FBI turn Gates's quest into a high-stakes crime caper and the most exciting treasure hunt you've ever experienced.

    5 out of 5 stars A treasure of a film!.......2007-09-06

Ben Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) has a family timeline of treasure hunters since our founding fathers has been obsessed with finding the legendary Knights Templer Treasure, one of America's greatest undiscovered mysteries. His rival (Sean Bean) wants to have the treasure too as they compete with each other, Ben decides to steal the declairation of Independence for it has a secret and a caurator (Diane Kruger)joins him on his quest to find the clues to the lost treasure.

Well made and entertaining action adventure from producer Jerry Bruckheimer offers terrific acting and a good storyline. It's an interesting film about "What if some of our national monuments had a secret?" and there's some humor, it's great fun for the whole family and for fans of action adventure.

This DVD has good extras like audio commentary, deleted scenes, alternate ending, three featurettes, opening scene animatric and 3 games.

Also recommended: "The Gonnies", "Indiana Jones Trilogy", "The Da Vinci Code", "Catch Me if you Can", "It's a Mad Mad Mad World", "Mission Impossible Trilogy", "Young Sherlock Holmes".

    4 out of 5 stars A fun, fast-paced adventure.......2007-08-13

Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicholas Cage) has spent his whole life searching for the famous Knights Templar Treasure, which is supposed to be a priceless collection of artifacts and gold. As Ben and his friends get closer to finding the treasure, they face multiple challenges, including a nasty enemy (Sean Bean) intent on finding the treasure and keeping it all for himself, and a team of FBI agents (led by Harvey Keitel) who are after Ben for committing the minor infraction of stealing the Declaration of Independence. The film is full of suspenseful chases and an exciting treasure hunt that keeps the audience guessing until the very end.

It's true that this movie is completely unrealistic and also rather silly at times, but it's also a lot of fun and provides quality entertainment: I don't think there's anyone out there that wouldn't relish in the idea of such a large-scale treasure hunt. The one thing about the film that bugged me was the character of Abigail (Diane Kruger), who works at the National Archives and ends up assisting Ben and his partner Riley (Justin Bartha) in their quest. I could buy the fact that Abigail would refuse to let Ben take off with the Declaration of Independence in hand, but the fact that she was so quick to join up with them in the end was just a little out there for me, and not at all true to the character that was sketched out for her in the beginning. Still, that's a relatively minor gripe. "National Treasure" is a fun adventure for the whole family, and I'm looking forward to the highly-anticipated sequel that will be released later this year.

4 out of 5 stars Let the Search Begin..........2007-07-27

Walt Disney Pictures has sure hit a streak of massive live-action box office triumphs of late. Usually Disney does well with their animated films, but for the most part their live-action movies just don't quite add up to the same box office success. However, in recent years Disney's managed to change their luck, sure there've been a couple of flops here and there ("The Shaggy Dog" remake), but those have been massively overshadowed by their successful releases, such as "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and the sequels that followed, "Remember the Titans", and "Hidalgo". One movie of Disney's that actually surprised both audiences by how good it was, and critics with how well it did at the box office, would have to be the Nicolas Cage, 'Indiana Jones' inspired, action/adventure film "National Treasure".

"National Treasure" is about a treasure hunter named Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) who along with his partner Riley (Justin Bartha) are seeking this lost treasure of the Knights Templar that Ben's grandfather had told him about. It turns out the Gates family has been trying to find this secret treasure for years and have never succeeded, but Ben is getting closer. With clues hidden in numerous places, Ben and Riley are inching closer and closer to finding the treasure. However, Ben isn't like most treasure hunters, his only goal is to find the treasure and divide it amongst various museums so that all the world can see. But they aren't the only ones who know of the treasure, a rogue treasure hunter (Sean Bean), who used to work with Ben until he betrayed him, is searching for the treasure as well, and his motives are not nearly as pure. As both close in on the final clues, each man comes to the realization that the biggest clue lies in Washington D.C. on the back of the Declaration of Independence. Now, Ben will attempt to steal the Declaration of Independence for two reasons, one is that he hopes he can find the answers to solve the clues that has consumed his family for generations, and secondly, to protect the document from reaching his competitor's hands, who will use the treasure for his own selfish gains.

"National Treasure" is actually one of those movies that looks good from the trailers, but also leaves you wondering if it's just a knock-off of some previous hit movie ('Indiana Jones' trilogy, in this case). But surprisingly, even though there are elements that are similar to Steven Spielberg's classic trilogy, this film does deliver to audiences a truly engaging and entertaining escape that feels both fresh and new. Director Jon Turtletaub ("Phenomenon") and uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer ('Pirates of the Caribbean' movies) have taken what was most likely a run-of-the-mill action/adventure and spiced it up to become better than it actually was destined to be. Truth be told, the basic story is fairly formulaic and easy to predict, but the solid performances, fun action sequences, and even some really funny bits of comedy give the movie a much more polished feel. The story actually did have some interesting bits of trivia about our nation's history sprinkled throughout as part of the clues, which I felt was a neat touch, and just the way each of the clues linked up was very well thought out, which also assisted in elevating the basic plot from your average action movie.

The actors all do very well with their roles Nicolas Cage gives a more low-key performance that doesn't appear to include his usual quirkiness that he's so well known for. Sean Bean is right on in the role of the rogue treasure hunter, villains are roles that Bean plays very well, and he always manages to entertain. Justin Bartha provides the bits of comedy that were used to break up the adventurous overtones, without them feeling out of place or forced. Cameo appearances by Jon Voight, Christopher Plummer, and Harvey Keitel are all entertaining and fun to see, although I guess Voight's role is a little more than a cameo but he's only in the latter half of the film.

"National Treasure" is a solid, action/adventure film that has a little something for everyone, and can be enjoyed by the whole family, and as a little bonus you may even learn some bits of trivia that you never even knew about our country.

"National Treasure" is rated PG for violence.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid action packed movie with Nick Cage.......2007-07-27

I love the plot of this movie. It's a thriller, a who done it, action packed with surprises around so many corners in so many directions.

    5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-07-11

This was very entertaining. It combines history and fiction in a believable way and makes us want to learn more about the subjects that we hear about. I definitely recommend watching all the bonus material on the disc. You'll probably end up searching the Internet for more information on the Knights Templar when you are done. I highly recommend this movie.

The winner of 10 Academy Awards, this 1961 musical by choreographer Jerome Robbins and director Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) remains irresistible. Based on a smash Broadway play updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s era of juvenile delinquency, the film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods--and ethnicities. The film's real selling points, however, are the highly charged and inventive song-and-dance numbers, the passionate ballads, the moody sets, colorful support from Rita Moreno, and the sheer accomplishment of Hollywood talent and technology producing a film so stirring. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim wrote the score. --Tom Keogh

    Description

This brilliant (The New Republic) film sets the ageless story of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in 1950s New York. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and scripted by Ernest Lehman, the film combines Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's unforgettable score ( Maria, America, 'somewhere, 'tonight ) with Robbins own exuberant choreography to achieve an exhilarating work of art (Saturday Review). A love affair is fated for tragedy amidst the vicious rivalry of two street gangsthe Jets and the Sharks. When Jets member Tony (RichardBeymer) falls for Maria (Natalie Wood), the sister of the Sharks leader, it's more than these two warring gangs can handle. And as mounting tensions rise, a battle to the death ensues, and innocent blood is shed in a heartbreaking finale.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest American Musical.......2007-09-16

Inarguably "West Side Story" is the greatest American musical film ever, hands down. "Singing in the Rain" is the greatest musical without stage origins but "West Side Story" transcends it's stage roots to far surpass any other musical. The stars alligned for this film and it works on all cylinders. Where to begin. Robert Wise's direction is fluid. Jerome Robbins' choreography is vibrant and life affirming. The music score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is transcendent without a bum note in the bunch. Boris Leven's spare but evocative art direction is a marvel to behold. The performances here are a marvel to behold. Russ Tamblyn, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris are simply brilliant. The film took some flack for casting a non-Latina, Natalie Wood(a non-singer as well), as Maria but I think that's overstated. Wood's casting may smack of commercial considerations but she was one of the finest actresses of her generation and is more than adequate here. Viewing "West Side Story" is mandatory for any serious student of American film, musical or otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars WEST SIDE STORY IS THE WINNER OF 10 ACADAMY AWARDS INCLUDING BEST PICTURE IN 1961!.......2007-09-04

I am writing a review on the legendary landmark musical film entitled "WEST SIDE STORY" starring three of Hollywood's all-time greatest movie icons ever. I give you the late great and always beautiful NATALIE WOOD, RICHARD BEYMER and RITA MORENO. "WEST SIDE STORY" was originally released in 1961 by MGM/UA Motion Pictures.

Three days ago I wrote my last review on NATALIE WOOD'S last ever film entitled "BRAINSTORM" from 1983. However, I could not end my series of NATALIE on a bad note so I figured that I would write one more review on her in order to end my series on her on a better note. Throughout her incredible career, NATALIE WOOD has given us so many great legendary films to remember her by but I feel that the film that I'm about to review for all of you today will pretty much sum up her brilliant career in spectacular form. Again, as THE LATE GREAT ONE JACKIE GLEASON once said, "and away we go!"

When "WEST SIDE STORY" was released in 1961, this film was far ahead of its time. It actually took musicals into a different level and dimension unimagined. Who would have ever believed that rival gangs in 1950's New York would be turned into a beautiful and romantic Romeo & Juliet musical? The acting and dancing choreography in "WEST SIDE STORY" was so spectacular that the film won 10 Acadamy Awards including Best Picture for 1961.

"WEST SIDE STORY" is the romantic Romeo & Juliet love story of a guy and a girl that are separated and torn apart by their rival gangs. WOOD and BEYMER star as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods and ethnicities. WOOD stars as the sister of the rival sharks gang leader and BEYMER stars as the rival jets gang member that WOOD falls for.

As for the acting, MGM/UA couldn't have chosen three more talented actors to portray the roles than NATALIE WOOD, RICHARD BEYMER and RITA MORENO. In my opinion, WOOD was perfect for the role. Her acting performance was taken to a different level that not even she could have ever imagined. BEYMER's performance supported and complimented WOOD perfectly. Lets not forget RITA MORENO'S performance. Her dancing was magnificent. MORENO complimented and backed up both WOOD and BEYMER in more ways than one. I have read that all three stars' voices were dubbed and were not their actual real singing voices. Despite that, their singing performances could have fooled me. And to add more, the fighting dance choreography scenes between both gangs were incredible. "WEST SIDE STORY" was one great realistic musical film, no wonder the film won 10 Academy Awards.

I highly recommend "WEST SIDE STORY" for everyone of all ages to watch and enjoy. As long as films are still around, "WEST SIDE STORY" will live on forever and will never be forgotten. "WEST SIDE STORY" has proven to stand the test of time indeed. So here's to you my late great sweet NATALIE, RICHARD and RITA. May you always rest in peace NATALIE. Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that you will continue in reading all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. NATALIE WOOD FOREVER! R.I.P. NATASHA NIKOLAEVNA ZACHARENKO A.K.A. NATALIE WOOD, Born 20 July 1938, Died 27 November 1981 at age 43. Forever in Entertainment, John L.

3 out of 5 stars I was never a fan of this movie..........2007-08-05

due to some facts: The fullscreen version in the 80s ruined its composition, the regrettably red filter they use when Tony meets Maria, the dialogue is "50s" and that it would have been GREAT to remake it in a manner more sinister, more dark manner...

Some dance-sequences survive(America), as do the four young stars....

But it they do remake it; be sure to get SINGIN` talents as well in the leads... Dubbing is a low form indeed.....

    5 out of 5 stars yes.......2007-08-03

It is great. I bought it as a gift because of the extra info and it is well worth the extra investment the info is awsome so is the many story. A winner

5 out of 5 stars West Side Story.......2007-07-02

Adapted by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from the long-running Broadway play, this triumphant production combines a brilliant score and jaw-dropping choreography with a heart-rending tale of doomed love. The leads work well together, with Wood particularly effective, but supporting players Russ Tamblyn (as Jet leader Riff), Chakiris and Rita Moreno (as Bernardo's sassy girlfriend Anita) virtually eclipse the stars with their intense moves and portrayals. This vibrant film is also elevated by an unsurpassed, evergreen Bernstein/Sondheim score. Winner of a staggering ten Oscars, including Best Picture.

In every aspect, the extended-edition DVD of Peter Jackson's epic fantasy The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring blows away the theatrical-version DVD. No one who cares at all about the film should ever need to watch the original version again. Well, maybe the impatient and the squeamish will still prefer the theatrical version, because the extended edition makes a long film 30 minutes longer and there's a bit more violence (though both versions are rated PG-13). But the changes--sometimes whole scenes, sometimes merely a few seconds--make for a richer film. There's more of the spirit of J.R.R. Tolkien, embodied in more songs and a longer opening focusing on Hobbiton. There's more character development, and more background into what is to come in the two subsequent films, such as Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship and Aragorn's burden of lineage. And some additions make more sense to the plot, or are merely worth seeing, such as the wood elves leaving Middle-earth or the view of Caras Galadhon (but sorry, there's still no Tom Bombadil). Extremely useful are the chapter menus that indicate which scenes are new or extended.

Of the four commentary tracks, the ones with the greatest general appeal are the one by Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and the one by 10 cast members, but the more technically oriented commentaries by the creative and production staff are also worth hearing. The bonus features (encompassing two complete DVDs) are far superior to the largely promotional materials included on the theatrical release, delving into such matters as script development, casting, and visual effects. The only drawback is that the film is now spread over two discs, with a somewhat abrupt break following the council at Rivendell, due to the storage capacity required for the longer running time, the added DTS ES 6.1 audio, and the commentary tracks. But that's a minor inconvenience. Whether in this four-disc set or in the collector's gift set (which adds Argonath bookends and a DVD of National Geographic Beyond the Movie: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), the extended-edition DVD is the Fellowship DVD to rule them all. --David Horiuchi

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-15

I've read the book and I think this movie was exceptionally well done. Sure, parts are left out, so what? It's over 4 hours long as it is! The special effects are incredible, the acting superb, the costumes excellent, the directing outstanding, and so on... It's classic adventure with strong moral lessons about selfless service to others, loyalty, courage, duty, etc.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-07-07

I brought this as a gift and had heard great this about it like right after it came out. I now wish i had waited to buy the complete set, but OMG how surprised at the depth the deleted sceens added to the movie, it was flawless and I almost felt like I was watching a different movie!

Defenitly a good buy, I will be buying the whole set (I know i know, now i will have too, maybe i will regift it!)

5 out of 5 stars The only way to go for Tolkien fans.......2007-06-30

I only had the regular version of the Fellowship and the extended version of the Two Towers and Return of the King. I just recently picked up this extended version to complete the set and am very glad I did. If you are even a casual Tolkien fan, the extended versions of each film are the only way to go. The added scenes make the whole experience much richer.

There are many reasons to recommend Troy as a good ol' fashioned Hollywood epic, especially if you've never read Homer's The Iliad. Dispensing with Greek gods altogether, this earnestly massive production (budgeted at upwards of $200 million) will surely offend historians and devoted students of the classics (for them, there's the History Channel's Troy). But there's politics aplenty in the grand-scale war that erupts when Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) makes off with Helen (blandly beautiful German model Diane Kruger), wife of Spartan ruler Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), whose brother, the Greek king Agamemnon (Brian Cox) prods him into enraged retaliation. Greek warrior Achilles (Brad Pitt) brings lethal force to his battles (and there are many of them, mostly impressive), and his Trojan counterpart, Paris's brother Hector (Eric Bana), adds even more buffed-up beefcake to a film so chock-full o' hunks that there's barely room for Peter O'Toole (doing fine work as Trojan king Priam) and even less for Julie Christie, appearing ever-so-briefly as Achilles's melancholy mother. The drama is nearly as arid as the sun-baked locations (Mexico and Malta) that stand in for the Aegean coast, and many critics suggested that Pitt (who valiantly tries to give Achilles some tormented dimension) was simply miscast. But when you consider that Wolfgang Petersen also made The Perfect Storm, there's nothing wrong with enjoying Troy as a semi-guilty pleasure with a touch of ancient class. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Brad Pitt picks up a sword and brings a muscular, brooding presence to the role of Greek warrior Achilles in this spectacular retelling of The Iliad. Orlando Bloom and Diane Kruger play the legendary lovers who plunge the world into war, Eric Bana portrays the prince who dares to confront Achilles, and Peter O'Toole rules Troy as King Priam. Director Wolfgang Petersen recreates a long-ago world of bireme warships, clashing armies, the massive fortress city and the towering Trojan Horse.

3 out of 5 stars Verhoeven should have directed this.......2007-09-11

Yes, Paul Verhoeven should have directed Troy. He could have filmed the graphic violence depicted in The Iliad to greater effect. But I'm sick and tired of all these damn purists hollering "historical" epic. The Iliad was a greek myth, not an actual historical event, but a long poem composed by a writer named Homer. However, I do maintain that if you are going to base the movie on the book, the writer, producer, and director of the film should have kept to the original story. Why call it "Troy" and then fabricate something else if just to sucker in those who've read the Iliad. It's the same thing with comic book adaptations like the X Men. Why adapt material of such a large devoted following and change the character histories, costumes, etc., and call it the X Men?

Troy, of itself, is a good Hollywood film. Pawned as Homer's Iliad, the movie's not just a fraud, it's a disgrace and an insult. As if the producers of the film felt that they could improve on a story that's been around, studied, and loved for over 2,500 years. I think Verhoeven, Peter Jackson, or Spielberg--especially with the brutality of Saving Private Ryan (wow)--could have done not only a better job, but they--I believe--would have stayed truer to Homer's original story. As far as violence goes, no novel revels in it like the Iliad. A film version of the book, if depicted as Homer depicted in the Iliad, would be a strong NC-17 or a weak X rating. If you want to see--or visualize--action and violence on a whole other level, read the Iliad and skip Troy. But if you're just looking for a good popcorn, beer, smoke, movie then Troy is as advertised.

    2 out of 5 stars This goddess can't sing.......2007-09-01

I'll make this short and sweet: Troy has a banal, redundant and uneven script, an A-list cast, a terrible musical score, and possibly the worst direction possible. That's really about it. The film opening scenes drag endlessly, with a lengthy prologue (featuring both text AND voice over) that fails to tell us anything an intelligent person couldn't deduct from the first five minutes of the film. Wolfgang Petersen has lost any credibility he might have had as a director, as the picture is washed out and sun-blasted, the action scenes are incredibly bland considering the film's outrageous budget, and there's so much overacting from the cast that I felt like I was watching a soap opera. James Horner provides one of the worst soundtracks in movie history, completely devoid of any creativity (it's too busy trying to rip off Hans Zimmer's genre-setting work in Gladiator). Diane Kruger is unbelievably boring, both dramatically and visually, as the legendary Helen. Brad Pitt's portrayal of Achilles as an ancient rock star is inspired, but his attempts to fake an English accent are inconsistent and annoying. Peter O'Toole has little to do except speak extremely slowly, and talk to the women of the film like a dirty old man. Brian Cox practically starts eating the set as Agamemnon. The film's sole saving graces are Eric Bana as Hector, Saffron Burrows as his wife Andromache (Hector and Andromache have good chemistry, and their relationship is one of the few convincing ones in the film), Sean Bean as Odysseus, and Vincent Egan as Achilles' captain, and Achilles' abs, which are rather impressive (that is, until you see Gerald Butler's in 300). All are terrific and lend the film what little value it has with wonderful, understated performances. Orlando Bloom is whiney and weak, but that's the character of Paris, so one could argue his performance is perfect. Bloom has absolutely zero chemistry, however, with Kruger, so their love feels flat and unconvincing. Even the massive battle sequences are weak, and consist of either massive CGI armies slamming into each other or poorly choreographed one on one duels between the heroes. Finally, the duel between Achilles and Hector, one of the most pivotal moments in the Iliad, is literally around 90 seconds long. 90 seconds. Out of almost 3 hours. Talk about anticlimatic.

Troy's worth seeing, maybe once, but seriously, if you want to see a Greek legend brought to life, get Zack Snyder's 300. It's a more focused, more creative, and far more visceral film. Troy had serious potential, and maybe if Ridley Scott had directed and brought in some other writers to help Benioff polish the script, it might have been truly spectacular. As it is, it's a massive, sprawling $200 million misfire.
