The direct-to-DVD animated feature Superman: Brainiac Attacks pits Superman against two of his longest-running foes: Lex Luthor and the robotic Brainiac. Luthor's scheme is to re-jigger Brainiac's configuration using a combination of Superman's DNA and a rare form of Kryptonite to make him an unstoppable weapon against the Man of Steel. Fans of TV's Superman: The Animated Series will be pleased to note the return of Tim Daly and Dana Delany, who reprise their roles as Superman and Lois Lane from the show, but hardcore Superman/Justice League Unlimited viewers may regret the loss of Clancy Brown's formidable performance as Luthor (who is voiced here by Powers Boothe), as well as Corey Burton as Brainiac (here handled by Lance Henriksen). Also missing is the series' adherence to its DC Comics origins and its serious tone, which here is blunted by Duane (The Batman, Jackie Chan Adventures) Capizzi's frothy script, which hews closer to a combination of the Superman films and broad comedy. --Paul Gaita

BRAINIAC IS WHACK!!!.......2007-09-12
THIS DVD IS OK!!! AT THE SAME TIME ITS KINDA CORNY!!! LEX LUTHER IS PLAYED BY A DIFFERENT ACTOR OTHER THAN THE GUY FROM THE SUPERMAN ANIMATED SERIES AND HE IS CORNY AS FREAKIN HEC! THE STORY LINE IS KINDA OFF FROM THE THINGS WE KNOW ALREADY FROM THE SUPERMAN ANIMATED SERIES LIKE BRAINIAC ACTING LIKE HE DON'T KNOW A DAG ON THING ABOUT KRYPTON WHEN HE IS SUPPOSED 2 BE FROM KRYPTON!! OTHER THAN THAT ITS ALRIGHT(FIGHTING SCENES). IF U ARE A COLLECTOR THEN GET IT, IF NOT BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
Garbage.......2007-09-06
This was painful for a Superman: The Animated Series fan (me) to watch. Despite the similarity of the look of the movie to the series, most of the voices are different, the plot is totally diconnected with the show, and the characters are totally changed and flat. For example:
- Lex Luthor is a buffoon.
- Mercy is a brainless twit.
- Braniac is a laughing witless maniac.
I really wish I'd looked at the reviews here before watching this (let along buying it). Please, save your money and your respect for this great show, and pretend this garbage doesn't exist.
Superman at his best.......2007-08-24
Definatley one of Supermans greatest challenges,a must see for all fans of the man of steel.
All brawn, no brain.......2007-08-11
As a lover of the Superman animated series of the late 90s and the Justice League and JLU series, I am terribly disappointed and outraged by this effort. At one point in the movie, Brainiac boasts that he has brawn as well as brains, but this movie is mostly a string of boring action scenes separated by and interwoven with insipid and ridiculous dialog. Powers Booth's depiction of Lex Luthor made ME sad, to paraphrase the character. There are moments that are reminiscent of the series, especially with Lois and Clark, but as a whole the movie feels like a rejected episode from the series that was padded into feature length. It is literally laughably bad; I guffawed when Superman kissed Lois and resuscitated her a la Sleeping Beauty.
Save your money and time - don't buy or rent this movie or bother watching it even if it's free.
Better than the consensus: an unbiased review........2007-07-13
I don't even care to write reviews normally, but "Brainiac Attacks" was so badly panned, I felt compelled to even the balance a little.
This is like an Elseworlds story - if one is used to just one version of Superman and his supporting cast, then I understand their disappointment with this movie. I was disappointed to find out that Tim Daly wasn't doing the voice overs in Justice League. However, I've moved on, and with a little openness, you can, too.
I liked this movie because it did something that the series only briefly touched on, then did without: should Superman reveal his identity to the one he loves...? The story has a good center, re-telling the pitfalls of superficiality, which is quite fitting considering the reviews this work has gotten.
I don't want to give away too much, but Superman was forced to make a couple of difficult decisions regarding his legacy and the woman he loves, making for compelling drama. Actually, the recent Superman live action movie went into the legacy bit, but didn't deal with it as this feature does.
Yes, Luthor is completely different - he and Mercy try a bit of comedy in this one, which isn't horrible, but Luthor's a pretty bad guy, which makes him seem openly psychotic (more like Joker) when he's trying to be funny. This is the only thing I really didn't like about any of the new characterizations, which is still a personal preference.
The action is good as well - I don't think I've seen Superman get walloped so good, even by Sinestro - Supes has a lot of getting up to do in these battles, which reminds me of why he's a hero to many.
Having said all of these complementary things, I have to say that I bought this movie for three dollars at Hollywood video, so if you're reading this review at about the time it was written, you should look into this. It was previously viewed and marked down from a still low $5.99. I wouldn't pay full price for most things though, but I would've paid more to get this movie if I didn't find it at Hollywood.
P.S. - I gave it five stars, 'cause to me it's take it, or leave it - and I think you should take it.
Description
AKA El Barón del Terror. The year is 1661. Baron Vitelius (Abel Salazar) stands accused of consorting with the devil. The penalty: death. Cursing his inquisitors as they burn him at the stake, the Baron's revenge comes 300 years later, in the form of a horrifying fork-tongued incarnation of the Baron, hellbent on devouring the brains of the descendents of those who killed him. As bodies pile up, the police become mystified. Who is draining the skulls of local call-girls and well-to-do banquet-goers alike? And, more importantly, how many flamethrowers will it take to stop him? Brainiac is the supernatural cult classic that has been beloved for decades by fans of spook-show matinees and late-night monster movie marathons.
Famously imported to the U.S. by exploitation icon K. Gordon Murray in the 1960s, Brainiac is at once lurid and loony, unnerving and uproarious, spellbinding and surreal.
CasaNegra is proud to present this milestone of Mexican cinema digitally remastered and uncut for the first time on DVD.

Make Me Watch The Rubber Tongue When It Comes Out.......2007-03-07
The Brainiac is a movie so silly that Frank Zappa had to make references to it in one of his songs! And silly it is, in a kind of Mexican Plan 9 sort of way. The plot is the whole heretic guy getting burned during the inquisition with the whole "I curse you and your descendants" thing. Kinda like Bava's Black Sunday, but one thing Bava's film didn't have is a monster like this one. Once the condemned Baron turns up again 300 years later, he basically looks normal until he decides to get down and dirty with revenge. After hypnotizing his victims(an optical trick that makes his face blink like a vehicle's turn signal), he turns into...THE BRAINIAC. The Brainiac looks like a kindergartener's attempt at making a troll mask complete with rubber forked tongue. He's a hoot! Unfortunately that's all the movie really has going for it. The scenes in between have a few unintentional chuckles, but it's all rather boring. The best scenes are when The Brainiac appears, and unfortunately, they go by a little too fast. Regardless of it's shortcomings, I'd definitely recommend this movie to all fans of the schlocky and the bizarre.
Horrable Horror: Not Superman's hot pants wearing green android enemy........2007-02-18
This movie is absolutely incredible and styrange. In the 1987 many fans were introduced to this film when clips
from it were included on the home video release "Zacherly's Horrable Horror'. At the time, the Brainiac had dissapeared from regular TV showings and, for many, this was all that could be seen. It was a revelation that blew our minds. Clips showed a cone shaped rock drop from the sky and land flat. It then transformed into
a huge hairy headed creature with sucktion cup fingers who is depicted changing into a human and, incredibly,
sucking the brains out of victims with a probing tongue. All thw while his head is expanding and contracting like a Rob Bottin bladder effect. Amazing. Glad that I can now see the whole movie. Its mind blowing. Way ahead of its time. This creature was a radical departure from the standard vampires of the time. Its the Grandad of the Chupacabra.
BRAINIAC.......2006-11-13
I never thought I would see such a good print of this title. The DVD revolution is fantastic.
Great DVD, Great Classic.......2006-09-18
First of all I would like to mention the quality of the image and sound, is superb. This movie was made in 1962 and you will never notice that, what a great job doing the transfer.
The Villian of the movie get's killed by fire when the movie starts and swears to come back and kill the descendants of those who took his life, and no he is not Freddy Krueger ;)
Two hundred years later he comes back to fulfill his promise. Of course this time he can transform himself into a "horrible" monster, of course is a very cheesy one and it will make you laugh a lot, This classic has all the elements of a fun campy horror movie, cheesy monster and FX's, some bad acting, some not that bad acting and specially "The Look", you will understand it when you watch it :D
EL BARON DEL....BRAINS?.......2006-09-02
CasaNegra continues it's top-notch quality preservation of old Mexican horror films with "El Baron del Terror" or "Brainiac". The film is absolutely ridiculous, cheaply made but beautifully shot in gorgeous b&w. And it's this wonderful quality that CasaNegra preserves. The print is immaculate, enabling you to see fine details like the unbelievably cheap sets and the unbelievably cheap "comet" that brings our monster "el baron" to earth 300 years after he was burned alive for heresy, debauchery, sorcery and so on. One thing must be said, though, the story is imaginative. But the baron (played by the producer Abel Salazar), in monster form, is one of the screen's most ludicrous looking things I've ever seen. He's hysterical. And likes brains, which we won't get into because he keeps them unrefridgerated and, well, nobody seemed to catch that they would SMELL after a while? Anyway, this is a fun film that's enjoyable to watch in such beautiful, sharp condition and to savor and share with your friends who also might enjoy hoots like this. The dialogue is not to be missed either. Says a detective, "A maniac with knowledge is a threat." Hmmm...guess so. Please enjoy!

What can Matt, an 11-year-old boy, do when his father is too obsessed with work to spend quality time with his family? A forgotten school project turns into sudden inspiration for Matt--if he buys his father's company, Tyler's Toys, he'll become his father's boss and can force him to spend more time at home! With a little business guidance from his teacher, some help from his friend Danny, and the promise of a major computer chip breakthrough by his sister Kelly, Matt secures $4 million from online kid investors and pulls off a hostile takeover of Tyler Toys. The fun really begins when Matt appears in front of his employees as an animated face on a computer monitor and institutes a liberal new work policy. Matt quickly discovers just how much work running a business entails and finds himself in serious trouble with the local bank and the Federal Trade Commission. Can a lot of hard work by the entire family and a little luck save Tyler's Toys? This well-produced, 99-minute video features Kevin Kilner, Alexandra Paul, Rich Little, and Dom DeLuise. The story is engaging, if strikingly reminiscent of the Tom Hanks movie Big. While aimed primarily at children ages 7 to 14, enough adult humor is sprinkled throughout to keep parents sufficiently entertained. --Tami Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Good movie, better talent........2001-02-08
First, when I review a movie, I try to grade it on its own terms. It wouldn't be fair to put this one up against "Schindler's List" or "The Breakfast Club". This Disney offering is much like so many other Disney made-for-TV films. It's cute and inoffensive. There are no rough edges, nothing shocking... in a word: kid-safe. In this, it excells at being what it was intended to be. There is enough entertainment value to make The Brainiacs.com fun for adults, too, but I am deducting a point because the writers didn't work hard enough to maintain the suspension of disbelief for those technicially minded enough to be put off by the impossible feats that these kids pull off on their computers (things it would take an army of seasoned programmers and artists weeks to produce, these kids do in a few seconds.) This can be forgiven, though, since it is a common practice for such films and it really doesn't keep the movie from filling the niche it was intended to. I won't rehash the plot since it is already spelled out in the Amazaon editorial. There is one extraordinary aspect of this movie that bears mention, and that is its main star, Michael Angarano. I feel that he is seriously short-changed by whoever designed the outer box. It's obvious that he has a very formiddable talent and it shows here. He is charming and outshines the rest of the cast with his natural portrayal of the main character of Matt Tyler. It is a shame that his name is not even mentioned in the graphics on the front of the VHS box - what a horrible thing to do to a good young actor. It could be argued that being relatively unknown, his name won't sell units. My arguments are that -A> he won't be lesser-known for long, he is a busy enough and talented enough young actor to make a big impression on the business.... and -B> Kevin Kilner's name (which features very prominantly on the front) doesn't sell units, either. Ask a hundred strangers who "Kevin Kilner" is, and you'll get a hundred clueless answers. Truth is, he gets such a nod because he is an adult. Meanwhile, the star of the movie (which is primarily aimed at kids) gets demoted because he's a kid. Gotta love that bean-counter thinking. All preaching aside, if you like Disney made-for-TV movies, or your kids do, go ahead and give this one a try. Its funny, sweet and has a nice message for kids and parents alike.

This S*** Better be Disco!.......2007-01-13
That's an example of the fantastic dialogue from this awesome B movie. I saw Brainiac on the big screen in Johnstown, PA where it was filmed. Yes it is low budget but it has heart! I can honestly say that seeing my local landmarks on film and some of my friends and neighbors in their film acting debut lend a helping hand in my enjoyment of this movie but you know what you are getting into when you buy it! Dialogue and special effects are over the top and of course unintentionally hilarious. This movie is indeed "Disco", Mr. Gratton..
