The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet? The title alone is amusingly absurd. Unless your idea of adventure includes picnics, hay rides, recreational horseback riding, and square dances, the word hardly applies. As revealed in this four-disc, 24-episode boxed set (the first official Ozzie and Harriet release on DVD) that cherry-picks some of the best moments from the entire 1952-66 run, this was a show so mild it made Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood look like The Wire--and that was a big part of its considerable charm.

Bandleader Ozzie, singer Harriet (nee Hilliard), and sons David and Ricky had already been on the radio for several years before the television show appeared; there had also been a feature film, Here Come the Nelsons (with Rock Hudson). The TV series, likely the only one ever to feature an entire family portraying themselves, continued where the radio show had left off, with Ozzie (who directed, produced, and co-wrote the vast majority of the episodes) as the well-meaning but sometimes confused, bumbling patriarch, Harriet his sensible but gentle foil, David the dutiful, self-effacing older son, and Ricky the mischievous youngster. Things naturally changed over the next decade and a half, as the boys grew up, went to college, and got married, but the dynamic remained essentially the same. Ozzie and Harriet was nothing if not wholesome. The parents were decent, honest folks; never dictatorial or authoritarian, they guided their sons but gave them enough space to make their own decisions, and David and Ricky were as clean-cut as they come. Of course, there was also Ricky's emergence as a singing star. Broadcast in 1957, "Ricky, the Drummer" was his musical debut (he sings and plays the skins with surprising skill), and the boxed set does a decent job of charting his growth from a somewhat wooden 16-year-old into a legitimate musician with a great band (featuring James Burton on guitar) and undeniable charisma; Rick Nelson was no Elvis Presley, but he had far more substance than other teen idols of the era.

Fourteen years is a long run for any TV show (only The Simpsons has surpassed it in the sitcom category), and by the time The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet started airing episodes in color in the '65-66 season, it had run out steam. Still, this is a classic bit of Americana that will find favor with old and new viewers alike. Bonus features include commentary on four episodes by David (the only living member from the original show) and Sam (son of Rick) Nelson, along with a 1949 radio broadcast, home movies, and more. --Sam Graham

You can spot the wonderful Janet Waldo (sounding every bit like Judy Jetson) in "The Swami" and as Wally Cox's wife(!) in "The Fraternity Rents Out a Room."

Legendary trumpet sidemen Pete Candoli appears in "Ricky the Drummer." His countless accomplishments include the trumpet work on "The Jetsons" theme and great Disney recordings like "Tutti's Trumpets."

Several epsiodes feature "voice of Disneyland and Walt Disney World" Jack Wagner! Speaking of Disneyland, actor Don DeFore, who plays Thorny, sponsored one of the first Disneyland restaurants.

You can also look for May Jane Croft (The Lucy Show), Joby Baker (Good Morning World) Kent Mc Cord (Adam-12) and Lynn Ready (Mickey Mouse Club) as well as James Stacy.

This is a good overview of the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet from it's first year to it's last. Some of the earlier episodes are of ok quality, but it is at least good to have them available.

It is also great to see some of the Nelson home videos, and listen to some great audio commentaries from David Nelson and Ricky's son, Sam.

Here's hoping that Shout Factory will release the full season sets!

This is another testament in the great clean, comedy that was 50's television. If only tv today could take some pointers from yesteryear.

When I saw that this compilation of shows was to be made available I was indeed very suspicious. Past Ozzie and Harriet shows have been very disappointing in regards to quality. BOY WAS I WRONG! The shows represented here are transferred crisp and pristine. This has to be the greatest situation comedy series ever! It certainly ran the longest(14 years). I refuse to include the Simpsons as being a situation comedy series. It is an animated series and crap at that! That being said here in lies the brilliant work of Ozzie Nelson who for 14 years wrote the scripts, produced and directed the shows, and if that weren't enough stared in them! There's a reason why this show went 14 years. IT'S FUNNY! As a head comedy writer for a series I can tell you that the one liners and zingers here are second to none. Only Seinfeld can claim a better (no make that equal) amount of sure fire funnies per minute. And it doesn't stop there. We witness the birth of a Rock-a-billy giant in Ricky Nelson who grows up before our very eyes. Nothing vulgar, good clean fun, and sharp wit. This show had it all! Quick.....get this set before they raise the price or worse.....take it off the market! A MUST HAVE!

This set is enjoyable. Yes, some of the episodes are cut from commercial TV viewing, but the overall feel and family-friendly episodes are a joy to watch. Ricky in his prime is always a delight, just don't expect too much from David's commentaries -- either he doesn't like talking, has memory gaps or just didn't have good direction. In any case, they don't provide what you'd hope as a viewer you want him to say and touch on.

The production quality is fine and not to be confused with some old-TV packages where the show is no easily viewed.

All-in-all a wonderful series, and a great piece of history and nostalgia.

It was nice having commentary on a few of the shows by David Nelson. What would make it even nicer is if they had someone familiar with the show share the commentary so that they could ask him the type of questions that all of us fans would like to know.

This DVD set is just plain awful.

Obscure, bottom-of-the-sewer episodes replete with authentic 1950s television broadcast quality.

Avoid this purchase like the plague.

There are plenty of DVDs out on the market today with episodes of television shows from the 1950s and 1960s that have fallen into the "public domain." Many of them are cheaply put together and, visually, look it. Not so with releases from the Falcon Picture Group. By and large, their releases look better than the vast majority of DVDs with older television shows. The reason for this is that they have done digital restoration of the prints included on this set.

What I like about this DVD is the great variety of shows included. Yes, some of the shows, like Dragnet, the Lone Ranger, Red Skelton, etc., are available on other DVDs, but they have also included some shows like Racket Squad, Mr. & Mrs. North, and Sea Hunt that are either rarely or never seen on video/DVD. I hadn't seen Sea Hunt since its syndication run in the 1960s. What a great show and, to the best of my knowledge, this is the only episode available anywhere on DVD (wish there were more episodes of Sea Hunt on DVD).

While this disk is more of a "potpourri" of different types of television shows from the 1950s, Falcon also offers three other DVDs, including ones with television Detectives, Westerns, and Comedies. If you are nostalgic for this great era in television, these DVDs are the way to go. Highly recommended!

I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD, but I don't know if you would enjoy it as much as I did unless you were a true Ozzie and Harriet fan. I watched their television series as a child and grew up with a tremendous crush on Ricky. This "Biography" DVD was factual and well-done, and it kept my interest until the very end. It contained some information that was new to me, also.

MY HUSBAND AND I THOUGHT THAT 'THE ADVENTURES OF OZZIE AND HARRIET' WAS CLASSIC 1950'S TV. IT WAS GREAT NOSTALGIA. WE LOVED THE COMERCIALS.

Some of us remeber this series from childhood, and it is just as filled with family warmth and humor now. This is about a real family, not actors. Real people with real family values.

This is what situation, family comedy used to be, with moral lessons as well as lots of wholesome fun.

    Since these shows are pretty old, 50's/60's timeframe, quality is not the absolute best, but still quite good. I enjoyed watching these shows very much as I grew up watching them on tv and became a Rick Nelson fan. I would recommend this DVD for any fan of the Nelson family.

    First of all I will give an information Amazon often misses to give - the info which episodes are on the DVD. This is quite important since there are so many compilations of this show and no complete season boxes (why not?) around. Episodes on this DVD are: "Maid of honor", "Rick grows a beard","Be on time","Rick's Riding Lesson" and "Busy Christmas".
    My review is based on the first two episodes only, but I guess that`s enough to review the technical quality of the DVD (I assume people interested in this DVD mostly know what this show is about).
    The picture quality is not High Definition of course, but better than expected. A season box should have a digital remaster better than this DVD, but still the quality is okay. Same is true for the sound quality.
    For this reasonable price you get a DVD well worth it's money. For Rick Nelson fans a must, if they don`t have this episodes by now.
