3 out of 5 stars a cult movie in the making.......2007-09-16

***1/2

Reportedly the biggest box office hit in South Korean movie history, "The Host" is a fun monster-movie parody that is also a touching family drama and an indictment of the evils of modern science at one and the same time.

The trouble begins when a U.S. Army mortician orders his reluctant lab assistant to pour mass quantities of spoiled formaldehyde down the drain directly into Seoul's Han River. In no time flat, the toxic waste has mutated into a massive sea creature that can live both on land and in water and which devours any hapless human unfortunate enough to wander onto its path. It also captures certain individuals and drags them to a sewer where he keeps them for later feeding. One such victim is a young girl named Hyun-seo, whose family members - a kindly grandfather, an aunt and an uncle, and her own childlike father - after receiving no assistance from the governmental authorities, are forced to make a desperate attempt on their own to rescue her.

Directed by "Memories of Murder"'s Bong Joon-ho, "The Host" is not a laugh-a-minute parody in the scattershot mold of the "Airplane," "Naked Gun," "Scary Movie" franchises. Instead, it mocks the conventions of its genre while at the same time treating those conventions with seriousness and respect. The characters may act in ways that are silly and goofy, but the threat posed by the creature is always real, so that we laugh at the same time we are awaiting the next suspense-filled jolt to come our way.

The movie, in many ways, is really more about the dynamics of this one family than it is about a city coping with a man-eating monster. Of particular interest is Hyun-seo's father, Gang-du, a kindhearted man who lives with his dad, sleeps most of the day at the store they run, and seems never to have fully grown into adulthood. His idea of good parenting skills is playing video games with his daughter while handing her a freshly opened can of beer. This puts him in direct conflict with his younger brother and sister, who continually berate Gang-du for being an irresponsible parent. It is only in the midst of an intense crisis such as the one the family is facing that Gang-du finds the fortitude, courage and maturity he needs to be a true father to his daughter.

As in most films of this nature, the scientists and governmental authorities in "The Host" are viewed with suspicion, if not downright hostility. They spend most of their time lying to the general public in an attempt to hide their own inadequacies and incompetence. The Americans come in for a particular black eye in this film, which prompts one to wonder just how favorably the United States government is viewed by the people (or at least the filmmakers) of South Korea.

The performances are good, though "The Host" might have been a better film with a few minutes shaved off its running time. As it is, it runs a little long for a movie of this nature, with most of the best laughs occurring in the front portion of the film. It also has a tendency to take itself just a bit too seriously in its final half hour, blunting its satiric edge somewhat as a consequence.

Still, this is a clever, entertaining film with cool special effects and an appealingly self-mocking tone.

3 out of 5 stars not new, not good.......2007-09-03

is a new version of the monster of the lake. With better
effects but without an argument to see.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, interesting, original horror film! Don't miss it........2007-09-01

Thank god, FINALLY a horror film that doesn't simply follow all the rules, doing the paint by numbers routine that Hollywood has developed. The Host is refreshingly original, moving, sometimes hysterical, and other times terrifying.... I like to describe it as Jurassic Park meets Little Miss Sunshine. You've got your monster (which, even though the CGI is sometimes lacking, the animation, movement, and personality of the monster is brilliant), and then you've got your (sometimes funny, sometimes sad) dysfunctional family trying to get through the disaster and be there for each other.

Note 1) Do not watch the English dubbing, it is awful.

2) For those reviewers who mention the anti-American slant, it's not quite true - the opening scene (the origin of the monster), where a Korean is told by an American general to dump tons of formaldehyde into the Han river is NOT anti-American propaganda, it is a recreation of an actual event that happened in 2005. So, uh... yeah.

3) It is very different from American monster movies... this is a good thing. The characters and their relationships to each other are actually fairly engaging.

Check out The Host, go in with an open mind, and have a great time.

5 out of 5 stars unique and entertaining.......2007-08-31

i really enjoyed the characters in this movie, and found them to be quite humorous in a realistic sort of way. american horror movies are usually pretty lacking these days, so it's always nice to see something with a little panache.
i also liked the scattered american characters in the movie because they were so true to form.

1 out of 5 stars Something lost in the translation.......2007-08-31

I rated this a one star, just because there was no 'bomb' selection. To be fair, it is not as bad as say 'Plan 9 from outer space', but just barely. If you can get by the poorly translated dialogue and bad acting, you might like the special effects. More like a bad environmentalist and anti-establishment propaganda film along the lines of the '50's B roll, but without the good story line. It is worth a look, but not something I would have added to my library had I known.

Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars ALIEN VS. AMERICAN SCIENTISTS.......2007-09-14

I have watched this movie numerous of times and I find that I love it more each time. Yesterday I let my eleven year old son watch it. When I told him what year that it came out he said, "Ahhh, come on, I hate it when you make me watch those old, stupid movies!" Within ten minutes he was engrossed. When the movie was over he told me that The Thing is now his favorite horror movie and that he was going to have nightmares. My point is that The Thing is such an incredible movie that every person, no matter what generation, is going to love it.

4 out of 5 stars THE THINGS ARE AMONG US!!.......2007-09-01

they sure didn't give this movie the credit it deserved. i'm telling you john carpenter did it again. man, this movie was extra good. the actors did a phenomenal job, the whole idea was brilliant, and the setting...what better place. who's who. the aliens really do exist among us, but as humans. this one was just plain evil. for it's time the effects were great, personally one of the best. total isolation, the thing, paranoia sets in, distrust, and nowhere to go. all you have is to fight back, whether you're the last man standing. the ending was good, he leaves it all up to you. if they don't kill each other the weather surely will. i do recommend this mind blowing classic.

5 out of 5 stars Class from Carpenter.......2007-09-01

I saw this at the Cinema in 1982 and on occasions had to watch through my fingers!

This film and Aliens were the last two great Sci-fi/horror films that did not have digital special effects. The effects in this film are astounding. For the younger people reading this (those born after the late 60's) you have to realise that what you see on the screen was actually created in the studio and not on a computer. They still look good compared with todays CGI and remain the pinnacle of animatronic special effects. Full credit to Rob Bottin the special effects wizard on The Thing.

The film itself is a claustraphobic affair once The Thing is loose in the camp, and you continally have doubts about which character is still human. The suspense is helped immensely by a intense music soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, who had obviously listened to some of Carpenters own soundtrack music.

Kurt Russell in the leading role does a great job as MacReady, and the supporting cast which includes Keith David (Platoon, Pitch Black) and Richard Dysart all give good performances.

This film was a high point for John Carpenters career, since whilst he has made some good films since (They Live for example) most of them have been very poor in comparison compared with this film.

The DVD has digital 5.1 sound.

5 out of 5 stars "I know I'm human and some of you are human or you'd all jump me right now" McReady(Kurt Russell).......2007-08-30

I saw this one when it came out and have this one on my top 10 list of favorite horror movie. While it is true the effects are stunning and have yet to be matched, it is with repeat viewing that the better parts of the movie rise to the top.
This is a more accurate telling of the short story classic"Who Goes There?" which was the used to make the original "Thing". In that one we had a monster from outer space that was described as a "Carrot", while here we go back to the idea that the alien can assume the shape of anything it touches. This is where the movie gets it's scariest scenes from, you never know who is on your side or who is an alien.
The cast is great and once again Kurt Russell shows that he is a very fine actor and carry's this film. This is one that stays with you long after the movie is over.

5 out of 5 stars Grotesque, violent, and repulsive horror at its best........2007-08-25

Years ago I saw this movie on television and I did not understand why this movie was considered a horror classic. On television most everything exciting was edited out and the plot was butchered due to the tv editing.

So I eventually watched it on DVD after a friend suggested I watch it again. I was very impressed. The Thing is not only a grotesque and ultra violent movie, especially for 1982, but it has a steady build up of suspence and twists and turns within the plot. Now, just because I said the movie was super gross especially for 1982 doesn't mean that The Thing doesn't stand strong against modern horror films. In fact The Thing creature is the sickest and most freaky alien I've ever seen in a movie. It would be awesome to see a sequel by the title of Alien VS. The Thing. I wonder who would win and what sort of mutants would form out of their battles.

This movie is highly recommended if you like horror, sci-fi and gore.

4 out of 5 stars Plain fun!.......2007-09-13

I first saw this movie when I was about eight years old. I was a big Mario fan back then, loved him, Luigi, the games and the genre to bits; and let me tell you, to see this movie for the first time was thrilling. I didn't even care if King Koopa was in the form of a human or not, or that Yoshi wasn't green. All I could think was "Oh gosh, that's them! It's the Mario Brothers, and King Koopa!" (Squeal, squeal.) I guess the point I'm making is that it did a pretty nice job of real-world reinterpretation. There's so many things I like about the movie that I don't even want to take the time to type all of it out.
The reason that it only has four stars instead of five, despite how I've always loved it, is that it isn't in fact the best movie I've ever seen. It's among my favorites, yes, but it doesn't make my eyes pop out quite as much as it did back when I was a serious Mario gamer (and a child).

The opening scene with the cartoon dinosaurs was a bit silly, and I think the film could have done well enough without it. The scene where King Koopa turns into the Tyrannosaurus of his ancestry was plain too short, as well as King Koopa himself... I mean, the bottom half of his body must have been two feet tall for him to fit so well in that crane bucket. There was also no real threat involved: the bucket was quite a ways away from Mario at the time, and Koopa couldn't have jumped over if he'd tried.

Also, the inhabitants of Dinohattan could have had more reptilian features, even as small as those scales that you see on one or two of them early on. (And yes, I do remember that weird guy who is practically a walking lizard, even down to his delighted growl of pleasure at the smell of a piece of food he's holding in his hands.) I'm not saying go all-out with tails and claws, but let's stay a little more faithful to their dino ancestry.

Oh yes, and another small detail that keeps the movie from sitting among my mental list of Best Movies of All Time: humans apparently being descended from monkeys. That's one detail that I simply cannot wrap my suspension of disbelief around. Apes, monkeys and humans descended from a common ancestor, if evolution scientists haven't determined wrongly.

Anyway, just to end my review up on a positive note: my favorite characters are...
Mario, Big Bertha, The Old King, Yoshi, Iggy, Spike, and Daisy. Peace!

You will love this movie. It has such an involving plot. Iv'e never seen any movie like this before! Mario and luigi meet soemone named daisy. She is kidnapped by henchman working for the evil koopa king and taken to a parrelel demension because she has a rock that allows him to rule both demensions! Mario and Luigi must save her in their biggest adventure yet (there's more to the plot than that)! ITS A BLAST!

5 out of 5 stars love this movie.......2007-07-05

i'm so very happy that i've got this movie now. i saw it when i was little, i liked it, and even now i always remembered it and wanted to get it. i know that it doesn't go exactly like the games do, but that doesn't matter to me. there's times when they can't make movies/shows based off of games or books the way they should be, so i'm ok with this. Yoshi did look weird *even back then i thought he looked weird* but hey, it was still funny.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-05-10

This is an AWESOME movie! I've looked for it everywhere and yes, I may be silly for saying this was an awesome movie, but I was a kid when it came out so, blame that! Quick shipping, perfect quality! Will definitely buy from these guys again!

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, but this film would stink on ice........2007-09-07

From the opening lab sequence, to the two fishermen in the Han River, on to the final scene, I just kept waiting for something to happen. Never did. Based upon the reviews comparing 'The Host' to 'Jaws' (a true classic), I was expecting something grand. Could it be that the critics watched a different movie? Or perhaps they simply took the producer's word for what was on the disc? In any event, I am more than a little bit disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Very disapointing.......2007-08-24

I purchased this movie based on general critics, that seemed to praise it. This is a very boring movie, that I would have rated "B", because of very crappy acting, outdated special effects, and general storyline. My wife and I did not finish it, and we resold it on ebay after only 3 days.

4 out of 5 stars Korean Kult Klassic.......2007-08-10

Great movie on BD. Crisp, clear and refreshing. It is the story of a family sticking together at all costs. A nice blend of humanism mixed with a CGI beast from the depths of murky waters, government conspiracy and brain surgery.

The story keeps you engaged most of the time. Monster effects are good, not the best. That is why it gets 4/5. The acting is good, you'll like most of the main characters.

Nice to see something of this magnitude make its way to the States, just goes to show what you are missing if you don't think outside of the box we call USA.

5 out of 5 stars Overhyped? Are you freakin kidding me?.......2007-08-07

The Host is one of those rare movies these days that uses its top-notch effects scenes to enhance rather than drive the storyline. The plot does not center around the mutated creature, but rather on the dysfunctional family, which is the primary reason why the audience would give a damn if one or two of them are "offed." The acting performances are superb, especially by Song Kang Ho and Koh Eun Ah, who play the father and daughter respectively. It's not a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it sure is fun. I can't really call this a horror movie, because in my assessment, it's not really that horrifying. Of course, your experience may vary. No severed limbs, decapitated heads, or other such excess macabre here, so if that's your cup of tea, go seek psychiatric help and then rent Re-Animator or something like that at your local Blockbuster. There are the obligatory few moments that you sort of expect the monster to show up and kill unimportant characters, and it obliges with a menacing gusto. The creature's introduction in the opening scenes is handled masterfully and dare I say- realistically. I mean, if a bus-sized mutated fish/amphibian suddenly decided to get nasty, run over crowds, grab ladies by the face and devour people whole, that's how it would play out, I'm sure. Ultimately, it's the most original creature flick that Asia has come out with since the original Godzilla in the 1950's, and it's infinitely better than recent Hollywood giant creature flicks like Anaconda or Lake Placid. And by the way- a note to Amazon- who the hell is Scott Wilson?

4 out of 5 stars A subpar plot, plus spectacular viuals makes this a pleasant movie........2007-08-02

I must admit that when I first heard about this movie I was a little skeptical. A Korean flick about a monster that lives in a river and feasts on an unsuspecting Korean city? Sounds kind of cliched, right? Well, right in that sense but wrong in the sense that I underestimated this film.

While the story-line and plot falter at times, I still found this to be a very entertaining and arousing film to my senses. If you can get over the cheesy American voice-overs for the Korean characters(and they are pretty lame at times), then you've pretty much gotten over the only true flaw of "The Host". The other flaw being the uninspired plot of an over-sized and ugly fish-like creature carrying off a family member to sea(or river, in this case), while the other family members take up a personnal vendetta against the creature and go searching for it with hardly enough weapons to last albeit one minute.

Where the plot fails, the viuals and sound more than make up for it. The monster looks and sounds amazing! It is simply unreal what computers can do this day in age for movies. Very creepy and life-like looking creature. It really makes your skin crawl at times just imagining what you'd do if face to face with this monstrocity.

While the films drags on at times, mainly in the middle of the film, it isn't all that bad. Just when you think you are about to lose interest, the monster comes right back into the picture and captivates you once again! And I also found that if you speak Korean, you will probably take this movie a little more seriously. I turned on the Korean language option for about five minutes and found that I could take this film and the characters alot more serious. The American voice-overs are laughable and rediculous compared to hearing this movie the way it was originally intended to be heard. In Korean!

Overall, if you are into chilling monster flicks, ala King Kong, Jaws, Godzilla etc., this movie is definetly for you. Brilliantly directed and very solid performances from the cast make this a must-see film for fans who are itching for a decent horror movie. Where the story lacks, the creature and the suspense more than make up for it and will have you on the edge of your seat. Don't take this movie too serious though, as you could be disappointed. Keep an open mind going into this film, and you should enjoy it quite a bit.

The sound and picture on this Blu-Ray disc are amazing. I am totally hooked on next-gen visuals for movies(be it HD-DVD or Blu-Ray) and this film blew me away! Whether on Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, or SD-DVD this is a great film and should be seen by many. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Great Fun!.......2007-09-02

It doesn't get any better than giant monsters fighting each other and tearing up the town. TOHO had the best suit actors on their payroll as well as the best special effects crew of the time. And if you pay attention, you will learn that it's wrong to pollute the Earth and that we caused the mess we're in. You have to love a movie that has wanton destruction and yet delivers a "green" message. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars "An Almost Adequate dvd".......2007-08-25

The original Japanese theatrical release is in pristine condition however Classic Media/Toho studios should have also cleaned up and remastered the American English dubbed version. That was annoying as one who would prefer to watch the American version and not have to concentrate on reading subtitles is distracted by the the uncleaned film print presented.

The dvd also offers a couple of extra features which consist of stills of the monsters that star in the film and a biography(forgotten who).
Stills include text and other film appearances of the monsters-with title and year given.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely A Film Worth Getting If You Love Godzilla!.......2007-08-10

Being a life-long Godzilla fan, I was excited when Classic Media said they would release Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster on DVD! Back in 1998, we got a VHS release of the movie for the first time in YEARS. The film was pan and scan and was discolored and grainy. Not the perfect print for such a classic but we really didn't complain much because we finally got a chance to own the film.

Classic Media did a great job in bringing us a widescreen version of the U.S. release and the Toho Scope Japanese version! The coloring is great, the sound is wonderful, and there is considerably much less grain than on the VHS release a handful of years earlier!

There are some nice extras on this DVD including a trailer, a poster slide-show, and film commentary! This film has just enough goodies on it to keep die-hard G-Fans entertained and satisfied! Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars not much action.......2007-07-30

Doesn't anyone realize that this movie doesn't have a whole lot of action?
The battle between king ghidorah, rodan, mothra, and godzilla was short but good. The only problem was that in the middle of it it was interupted by the people. I thought that it could have been better but it was good.

2 out of 5 stars monster round table.......2007-07-29

If you are anxious to see a Japanese monster movie about Rodan, Godzilla and Mothra having a round table discussion about whether to unite and save the world from Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, this is your film. Director Ishiro Honda delivers just that.

If, though, you want to see Honda's GREATEST film and one of the most horrifying and unsettling films of the sixties you should skip the above and check out Mantango. There are no monsters here over six feet tall, Tokyo is not threatened, no buildings are crushed, no tin tanks are destroyed, no thousands of people flee in terror, there is no radioactive breath anywhere and the Japanese army is nowhere in sight.

I guess this world is big enough for both.

With laughs and gross-outs aplenty, Slither is the best horror comedy since Shaun of the Dead. Having written for the jubilant trash-mongers at Troma Films before scripting 2004's well-received remake of Dawn of the Dead, writer-director James Gunn crafted this hilarious splatter-fest as an homage to the comically violent horror films of the 1970s and '80s, and he gets it just right with a low-budget look, perfect casting, grisly make-up effects and judicious use of CGI gore. The story's a deliberate monster-mash, borrowing from a dozen other movies with its plot about an invasion of slithery slug-like parasites from outer space, arriving (via meteorite) in the redneck town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, where they turn most of the local yokels into flesh-eating zombies. The first victim (played by Michael Rooker) turns into a squid-like, multi-tentacled host monster (kill him and you kill 'em all), and his terrified wife (Elizabeth Banks) teams up with Wheelsy's sheriff (Nathan Fillion, from Firefly and Serenity) and mayor (comedic scene-stealer Gregg Henry) to eradicate the alien threat before Wheelsy turns into Slugville. Gunn handles comedy and horror with exuberant flair, and Slither's greatest strength is that it never aspires to be anything more than it is: 96 minutes of good laughs and gruesomeness, served up with the kind of gleeful abandon that only true horror buffs can fully appreciate.--Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Slitherine.......2007-09-03

Enjoyed it just as I thought I would. Nothing earth shattering but a pleasant enough horror comedy along the lines of--remember TREMORS with Kevin Bacon? This is like that, except than Nathan (FIREFLY) Fillion is filling in those big Bacon shoes as the local lawman puzzled by an outbreak of disgusting, wriggly, phallic looking roundworms that aim for the victim's open mouth so if you don't talk they can't get you I guess.

Nathan Fillion is appealing in the backstory too, when he was a teen the girl next door approached him and asled him to help her run away from Wheelsy to Hollywood where she would be a star and he could be her bodyguard. All his life he's regretted saying no to the cute little tyke, all the more so since she grew up to be Elizabeth Banks and got herself hitched to the richest son of a gun in town, Grant Grant (played by Michael Rooker and even scarier than he was as HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER). The romance between Fillion and Banks has enough emotional resonance so we never give up on the film as a grossout contest, and it provides for some outstanding scenes in which first she sacrifices herself to save his life, then vice versa--TROMEO AND JULIET all over again.

They should publish the screenplay of SLITHER, it's so clever, although a little of Gregg Henry went a long way for me. Somebody gave him fifty cents for every time he'd holler out his dialogue instead of speaking it, and he wound up with five hundred thousand dollars.

4 out of 5 stars Slugs in Search of the Promised Earth!.......2007-08-24

"Slither" (2006) is a very good class B film! Almost as good as those mythical "B-Class" from the Forties and Fifties I used to enjoy in chilling (yet hot summer afternoons) when I was a kid.
This film has everything to fulfill its target: decent storyline, solid acting from little known actors, some gallons of blood & entrails disseminated all the way long, giant slugs and a small town near disembarkment point.
What else do you need? Ah yes, a good director who enjoys the genre. Well James Gunn is THAT kind of director and more so, he is responsible for script too!

The story is not very original (I think it was partly conceived as homage to those illustrious predecessors).
A meteorite falls near a small village. From its interior emerges an amorphous "thing" that in due time will sting/infect a human being: Mr. Grant Grant.
At short notice Grant will show strange deportments & dietary changes. He soon will impregnate a neighbor with alien sperm.
From this point on chaos erupts staining and harming every nearby resident.
So that's THAT, enough to have a rough gory one and half hours pastime.

Play acting is real good with Gregg Henry as side-splitting Mayor, able to utter solid nonsense anytime regardless of the situation.
Elizabeth Banks as Mrs. Grant gives a convincing characterization. Nathan Fillon as Sheriff Pardy and Don Thomson as Wally his sidekick give a good performance.
Last but not least young Tania Saulnier shows a promising look.

It is a very good horror movie for genre fans!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent horror/Sci-fi comedy!.......2007-08-22

A meteor carrying a larva-like thing crash lands near a small town, a man named Grant (Michael Rooker) was just taking a stroll in the woods until he finds it and a alien parasite infects him. Mutating and manifesting inside his body he starts to infect some of the locals and turning them into vicious zombies and ugly mutations, only his wife (Elizabeth Grant) and a local sheriff Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion) must destroy these creatures.

Extremely entertaining, gory and hilarious Sci-fi horror comedy that pays homages to Sci-fi horror movies of the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's in a well done and funny manner thanks to the wonderful mind of former Troma filmmaker and writer of "Dawn of the Dead (2004)" James Gunn. The acting is terrific especially from the star of the cult 1990 classic "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" and Fillion who always does excellent roles, the make-up effects & gore with the CGI creatures are fantastic and there's a cameo appearence by Troma co-founder Lloyd Kaufman, it bombed in theaters and has now become somewhat of a cult fave. If you want a movie that delivers the goods then this could be the movie for you and it's an instant cult classic for the new millenium.

The DVD offers great picture and sound with fantastic extras like deleted & extended scenes, gag reel, an audio commentary by the writer/Director and Nathan Fillion, a load of featurettes and more.

Return of the Aliens)", "Night of the Creeps", "The Curse(1987)", "From Beyond", "The Thing (1982)", "Aliens", "From dusk Till Dawn", "Dawn of the Dead (1978 and 2004)", "Xtro", "Basket Case", "The Toxic Avenger", "Nightbeast", "Pitch Black", "The Blob (1958 and 1988)", "The Fly (1986)", "Videodrome", "Lifeforce", "War of the Worlds (1953 and 2005)", "Critters 1 & 2", "The Stuff", "The Return of the Living Dead Trilogy", "Cemetery Man", "Shaun of the Dead", "Contamination", "Day of the Dead", and "Killer Klowns from Outer Space".

5 out of 5 stars Fun 80's movie..........2007-08-02

...from 2006. I'm going to give this film the highest possible compliment i can think of...remember that movie TREMORS, the fun homage to 50's-style monster flicks? Well, this is an equally fun homage to 80's-style horror/gore flicks. If you're open-minded enough(and can stomach the gross-out efx), i strongly recommend you give this a try. The first 3'rd or so is a little slow(deliberately according to the commentary), but hang in there as the rest of the film picks up the pace and is really a lot of fun. Speaking of the commentary, it's actually worth listening to but even if you don't there are plenty of other extras worth your time including making of's and a gag reel. So let's see: fun horror movie that doesn't skimp on the gross-out effects, tons of bonus content, and all at a low price. It sort of recommends itself. (overall, 4 stars for movie rounded up to 5 for the dvd content)

5 out of 5 stars Br-rains --- ewwww. .......2007-07-20

We've all seen the place or heard its mention - a sleepy little town where everybody suffers from the six degrees of Kevin Bacon in more ways than most can imagine, where "agro" is the culture and where time seems a little slower - and sometimes the angle seems worked to death when it comes to horror movies. The seclusion is wonderful and the echoes don't have to fade rapidly, sure, but it seems you always have to import people to watch the story progress or follow some type of cliché lay-out. In a way that's what makes Slither such a superb hit; you know a lot of the pieces that make up the puzzle and there's no attempt to hide it. You know there are going to be scenes that are hideous and you know there are going to be wide-open acres that seem to stream together, but things like dialog and wit and the way effects are combined seem to take the old and remake it into something renewed again.

One of the things that immediately made me want to see the movie was a cast led by Nathan Fillion. While he isn't a name that immediate springs to mind when it comes to a comedic sense, he has to be one of the best when it comes to delivery and better still when it comes to convincing his audience. Watching his facial expressions and the range he brings seems to push me into the moment in a different manner, still leaving things horrifying and repugnant but making them deliciously funny at the same time. I, for instance, didn't really think I would be laughing at some of the things I laughed at in Slither because, quite frankly, it is a reallly gory film.
Still, it manages to filter in zombies, slugs, monstrous aliens, and more and do so in a humorous manner.

I've heard a lot of opinions on the movie and a lot of the pros I listed for the movie were used against it as well. And while I can see how that can be justified, I always try to lower my expectations that have been built by random hype and different types of media, try to forget the type of movie I think I'm going to see because the best movies are genre-benders, and then see if the movie is for me. I guess that's the trouble with movies and reviews; you can say that a person should watch something a million times over but, in the end, one person's pearls are another person's, ummm, pencils?
Still, this comes highly recommended for people who like their gore with humor and the feeling of stepping into a cinema time capsule.

5 out of 5 stars A Decent 80s Thriller.......2007-05-14

For what it is and for its age, this movie is pretty good. Plenty of surprises, outstanding pyrotechnics, big bangs! If you're a horror fan this one is worth a look.

There's a lot of latex rubber for the creature effects - not CGI - so if you're turned off by that, at least you're aware of it. It's not difficult to tell where the special effects are, yet they did a really good job considering the technology of the time.

The HD transfer's video is of high-quality, and the DD+ 5.1 soundtrack exceeded my expectations!

A great cast projects their desperate situation in a believable manner (yet the Doc's ability to come up with diagnoses so quickly is a little hard to believe - then again it's a movie and who has the time to wait for lab results)...anyway, "The Thing" definitely has it moments!

5 out of 5 stars An atmospheric thriller.......2007-04-28

"The Thing" has a wonderful atmosphere right from the beginning, when the director establishes the vast isolation of Antarctica with some stunning shots. From there, he draws closer and closer in, with some actual horror mixed with well-done suspense. An added bonus: the glimpse at the technology of yesteryear, especially the computers and boomboxes. All the actors are well-chosen and create defineable characters and the fate of each comes as something of a shock. Carpenter even preserves the original opening of the movie he's remaking. Unfortunately, lately, I have to say he's rather lost his touch.

5 out of 5 stars Godzilla for the 21st century! Had me completely glued to the screen..........2007-09-15

This is how it should be done! A monster movie that actually shows off it's wonderful cast, screenplay, and direction rather than just it's budget and CGI creature. The Host is one of the best movies I've seen in along time. Everything is done exceptionally well... American movie makers should take note. Here you are introduced to a small family with diverse personalities who have to come together and do whatever it takes to rescue their youngest when she's abducted by The Host. Joon-Ho Bong shows his obvious directing chops and films the monster incredibly well with a sense of curiousity and awe rather than just sheer horror. Many of the scenes are so well put together and shot you almost feel like you're right there in the mayhem of the monsters rampage! The family as I mentioned before, are all memorable and acted to perfection by a great cast (lead son Gang-Du is like a Korean Homer Simpson!). CGI is obviously used to a major extent here but it's as realistic as a monster can look and fits seamlessly into the needed shots. All the dramatic beats are included here making this an experience instead of just a movie... highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars The Monster Steals the Show..........2007-09-01

Some of the elaborate reviews of this goofy South Korean movie are longer than its script. If you are familiar with the old Godzilla and Rodan movies, then simply imagine what they would be like if brought up to modern technical standards, but with the same lack of continuity; convoluted, ridiculous plot; lousy dubbing; and laughable over-acting. The monster is excellent. His appearance and motion are really scary and believable, but the entire human part of the movie is not nearly as believable. There are some laugh-out-loud moments, both intentional and inadvertent, but the ranting histrionics get a little old. Why is it that "actors" in Asian monster movies never simply talk to each other? Instead they shriek, threaten, moan, and wail. Indeed, their histrionics often put the monster to shame.

Enough analysis. If you want a detailed retelling of the silly "plot" then read some other reviews, but be advised that the plot is of little consequence. What you will be watching is a cinematic mess that is made a little more tolerable every time the monster makes an appearance and demonstrates his lousy table manners, acrobatic prowess, and olympic-grade diving skills. It may be un-named (in direct violation of established monster-movie tradition), but he (or she) is undeniably the star of the show.

2 out of 5 stars Dumb and Stupid. Coulda' & shoulda' been better........2007-08-25

"On a par with Jaws" said one of the statements on the DVD case...........what!? I realize you can find anyone to hype even the worst of movies, but this is borderline libel in my opinion.

I have learned that some of the movies that you never hear of until you see them on DVD, that have rave reviews on the case, are actually pretty good, often much better than the box office hits. I repeat, "some" of the movies.

The plot was fine, the visual effects were very good, some of the scenes were pretty intense and dramatic, but the movie still flops badly in my opinion because of plain stupidity. And no, I do not mean the absurdity of a monster living in the river that eats people, it is a monster movie after all so I have no problem with that, rather I mean the goofiness of some of the characters, and the absolutely mind-numbing dialogue.

Obviously the dialogue had to be dubbed in, and I understand that presents many problems, unfortunately they were either unable to overcome these problems, or the writing was juvenile.

I suppose that "campy" is how the fans of this movie want to describe it, but I don't agree. The stupidity in this movie is so strong it destroys what could have been a decent movie, and at times it is actually hard to watch. Some of the attempts at humor were unbelievably pathetic. They were either poorly timed, poorly executed, or again, just stupid.

The "dad" (or "blondie") annoyed me from the moment the movie started. Weird. My biggest disappointment was that "dad" was not attacked and killed by the monster at a very early point in the movie. I am perfectly sincere when I say that this would have made this a much better movie. My 2nd biggest disappointment was that he was not attacked and killed by the monster late in the movie, which would at least have given this movie a happy ending.

2 stars because of plot, some good scenes, and visual effects. The adult characters and the dialogue were probably the dumbest I have ever seen.

3 out of 5 stars Extremely interesting horror film, though perhaps a bit too original for its own good.......2007-08-21

There were a lot of things that I really loved about this movie and a fair number that I did not. All horror films work within a framework and the most successful of them are original within that framework, not by busting it up. It is like a competitor in a high diving contest. If you completely alter form you will get a damning grade.

One reviewer described this as a satire. I think he is mistaking comical elements for satire; the overall form of this film is definitely not satirical. It is definitely trying to stay within the bounds of the horror film while trying to stretch some of its limits. For instance, one of the rules in monster movies is that you don't show the monster too soon or too well. But here the monster is shown only a few minutes into the film and then with great clarity. You see exactly what it looks like almost as soon as you see it for the first time. I wasn't too troubled by this because the monster was interestingly and uniquely portrayed. I was a bit more bothered by the frequent injection of farce (which is what I think the reviewer I mentioned before mistook for satire). I think comedy properly timed can do a great deal to ease tension and make for a better film, but at times this film almost degenerated into slapstick. Another traditional element -- and one with which it clashes because of the farce, which almost seems to promise a happy ending -- is the idea of winning. Every monster movie has to end with a sense of a win. Few really great monster movies end with all the principle characters dead. Here most of the characters survive, but the two we care most for in the course of the narrative do not. At the end of the film it didn't, to me, feel like a "win." I felt that the monster won.

Still, there were a lot of riveting moments in the film. The locale in Seoul was truly creepy and eerie. The camera work was simply breathtaking and was as important in establishing the mood of the film as the locale or the special effects (it was shot in high def video instead of film, a practice embraced not only by a number of television series like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, but more and more movies). The monster itself was simply amazing. I wasn't completely thrilled with its appearance, but there is no questioning how convincing it looked. It was perhaps the most impressive large monster (except perhaps for Peter Jackson's Kong) that I've seen in a movie.

Still, despite the good things, the persistent farcical elements and the "feel bad" ending kept me from liking this as much as I would have liked. With some tweaking, it could have become a classic.

1 out of 5 stars What a stinker!.......2007-08-21

I watched this movie thinking it was a monster movie filled with horror and fright, but I spent most of the movie rolling my eyes and apologizing to everyone in the room watching it with me. I had read great reviews about this film and had very high expectations that it was a great movie, but it's a stupid movie, the forced voice-over made the movie into this stupid campy film that leaves the viewer embarrassed that they watched it. I can't compare this movie to anything because it's that bad, even with a slight appreciation for Godzilla and Mothra, I still hated this movie.

4 out of 5 stars less gore than i tought!.......2007-08-03

i never really was a fan of the video game but i finally came across this movie remembering the trailer in the the mask:animated videos. i was basically blown away by the martial arts action in here i am a fan of karate and i am even an orange belt so i am always looking for a decent karate show to wacth and this was good, thoght the film lacks of charecter develoment and cheap spiecial effects, i reall enjoyed robin shou he is a great martial artist it's a shame he didn't star in other good films, the guy that played johhny cage did real good, the sonya charector was very cute!that christopher lambert guy looked and sounded just like my uncle,it's freaky.

3 out of 5 stars It was allrigth.......2007-07-19

this movie was ok, i had seen it many years ago when i was smaller, and i liked it better back then, but watching it as an adult is not the same, the movie is ok tough.

3 out of 5 stars at least its better than street fighter.......2007-07-19

In the world of movies, Mortal Kombat is pretty bad. In the world of martial art films, its pretty average. But in the world of video game movies, this is actually one of the better. Its only competition, if you will, is Street Fighter. That turned out to be extremely poor, even with Van Damme playing the lead. There is no highly known lead or leads in this film (maybe Christopher Lambert to an extent), but Mortal Kombat thankfully improves over Street Fighter. The result is basically the same thing, just not quite as bad.

This movie has a promising start, introducing many of the video game characters quickly and providing a bangin' soundtrack. Unfortunately, when the tournament of Mortal Kombat finally begins, everything goes downhill. There is fight after fight, which is good, but the dialouge really suffers, the cheesiness and poor effects build, and loopholes and unexplained story elements begin to pop up.

Really, the only way you are going to enjoy this film is to probably love the video game. Most of the fun about the movie is seeing the characters from the video game, and about everyone is there. The actors were actually well chosen, and look very much like their video game counterparts. Cary Tagawa makes an excellent choice for Shang Tsung and Christopher Lambert is a wonderful Rayden. As for the rest of the guys, they do the job well enough.

Mortal Kombat is loaded with fights, and maybe what it all comes down to for most people. As a martial arts film, I would not recommend this. Most of the fights look unimpressive compared to your typical martial arts film, even the American made ones. Maybe its the camera angles and editing that make it suffer, but no fight really ever engaged me. The final fight between Liu Kang and Shang Tsung was rather boring, filled with too much dialouge. I just wanted them to fight already.

This is basically a fun movie, but you must leave the brain at the door. If you have never played the video game, this movie might be a complete waste of time. Only hardcore Kombat fans will want this in their collection. It does, however, impress over Street Fighter.

3 out of 5 stars more of a guilty pleasure.......2007-07-16

Its one of those movies you know is corny, but is very well done and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars This Movie is a Fatality.......2007-07-15

Simply summed up, this is the best movie of all time.

Okay, okay, that's a bit of an overstatement. Here is what is is: this is a FUN movie. You watch because it's got a kickin' soundtrack, martial arts fights, and, yes, all the hooks of the video game for those who played it and wanted to see more. There are no hugely gaping holes in the plotline. In fact, there really ISN'T much of a plotline: it's just an excuse to have some weird martial artists beat each other up in exotic locations. Corny humour at times, attempts at seriousness at other times, but mostly it's just what it is: a movie about some people who are out to kick each other's butts -- and do so.

NOT for: those who want a complex (or even vaguely understandable) plot; those who abhor violence; those who are finicky about the action sequences ("But, wait -- Gogrillo can't travel 17 meters in 4.3 seconds while he's carrying a battle-sword, according to his stats -- this movie is whack!" -- yeah, people who talk like that? No, not your movie.)

FOR: those who want to ignore the plot and just cheer the fight on until the popcorn goes flying; those who just loved the game and wondered what the characters were like when not in the ring; everyone who loves a basic action movie that's about having FUN!

Who would have guessed that this clever, fast-paced creature feature from 1990 would become a beloved miniclassic worthy of its own Collector's Edition DVD? Tremors didn't actually break any new ground (even though its tunneling worm monsters certainly did), but it revved up the classic monster-movie formulas of the 1950s with such energetic enthusiasm and humor that it made everything old seem new again. It's also got a cast full of enjoyable actors who clearly had a lot of fun making the film, and director Ron Underwood strikes just the right balance of comedy and terror as a band of small-town rednecks battles a lot of really nasty-looking giant worms. The special effects are great, the one-liners fly fast and furious between heroes Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward (and yes, that's country star Reba McEntire packin' awesome firepower), and it's all done with the kind of flair one rarely associates with goofy monster flicks like this. Followed by a direct-to-video sequel (Tremors: Aftershocks), this horror thriller was given the deluxe treatment for its DVD release. Bonus features include an original "making-of" documentary, previously unseen video showing the creation of the worm-creatures, outtakes from the film, the original ending not shown in theaters, theatrical trailers, and a gallery of production photographs. If you're a fan, consider this a must-have disc! --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars What a hoot!.......2007-04-12

What a hoot! A great cast that plays this crazy story perfectly straight. They get us to buy into every bit of the story no matter how wrong every "scientific" premise of the story is. Each of the characters is colorful and we root for them in the way they individually deal with the crisis of these "new" creatures attacking their valley home.

Valentine McKee (Kevin Bacon) and Earl Bassett (Fred Ward) are the closest thing to heroes and normal among the males in the movie. They become the leaders and the ones the plot leans on. The most colorful characters are Burt and Heather Gummer (Michael Gross and Reba McEntire) as the survivalist couple with enough food storage and weaponry to stand for five years against an invading army. The Michael Gross character is the one who is in all four movies and a few episodes of the TV series based on the movies. Although, a few others lasted through one or more of the sequels (think of Tony Genaro's Miguel). However, this is the best of the series.

Victor Wong, whom we greatly miss, is terrific as the local shop owner, Walter Chang. In every role I have seen him play, I enjoy his presence and think he makes the movie better.

I guess the whole "Dune" series made the idea of large worms that could move through dirt as easily as a fish through water more believable. And the monsters in this movie are quite good. Because they are underground we believe that all the moving dirt, floors, walls, and machines to be the results of those things being down there and threatening not only the characters, but us! We don't want to get eaten by them any more than they people inhabiting the movie.

And while things get worse and worse for the cast, we still enjoy their inventiveness in trying to get out. That worms are as intelligent as these seem to be does require another leap of faith. But we are willing to make it for this story.

Lots of fun!

5 out of 5 stars One ultra cool monster flick.......2007-03-28

Tremors is a monster movie reminiscent of those old 1950s creature features. The small town of Perfection, Nevada finds its population dwindling due to the menace of underground creatures. The few remaining residents fight for their lives as they're cut off from the rest of civilization.

Tremors has become a cult classic over the years and deservedly so. It's a great blend of comedy and horror, and has enough action and one-liners to keep everyone entertained. Kevin Bacon (in his most memorable role) and Fred Ward lead the pack of unlikely heroes including a seismologist (Finn Carter), a gun-loving couple (Michael Gross and Reba McEntire) and a few other helpless souls. The witty script gave the worms a run for their money; the tactics the characters come up with to outrun them are both ingenious and hilarious. Although this movie is a lighthearted one, there are still plenty of suspenseful moments. Ron Underwood brilliantly helms this little film with the hand of a pro; let's face it, in the wrong hands, Tremors might have been a disastrous and forgettable film.

If you like left-field comedies, monster movies, horror films or are simply in the mood for a fun flick, Tremors is the way to go. The DVD has a lot of extra features including a making-of, an alternate opening and original ending, and movie trailers. Skip the sequels; they don't have the heart and freshness of the original.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-03-24

The first time I saw this movie was with my dad. He rented it and I thought oh man, another cheesy sci-fi movie. But after watching it, it's hilarious. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for some dry humor and crude jokes. I liked this movie so much I bought the first and second one a few weeks ago.

:)

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC "50'S SCI - FI" FEEL WITH MODERN DAY FX = EXCELLENT MOVIE.......2007-03-16

I don't know how they did it?! They managed to capture that fun classic sci - fi feeling of the 50's. This is a modern day classic giant bug movie that really pays homage to the good lo' days! It will keep your pulse racing as much as make you laugh. This is the best of the series, but I must admit I like the 3 sequels too! The DVD is a good transfer.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie.......2007-01-04

One of the best humorous scary monster movies of all time. I've watched it at least 8 times. Own it on VHS, then bought it on DVD. Highly recommend it for older teens and up. Memorable "F-bomb" language.
