There's only one better way to experience these performances by Bruce Springsteen and his reunited E Street Band, and that's if you were actually in Madison Square Garden when they were recorded in June and July 2000. This two-disc set includes more than three hours of music. Disc One features the 14 songs that were aired by HBO in 2001, while Disc Two adds another 11 tunes released here for the first time. The Boss and his band are in top form; their sheer exuberance at playing together, not to mention the joy and inspiration they provide their audience, are palpable, thanks in no small part to the excellent direction and superb sound (Dolby Digital 5.1 or PCM stereo). Highlights? Almost everything, from timeless anthems like "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road" to the riveting "American Skin (41 Shots)" and a bluesy, solo "Born in the U.S.A." All together now: Bruuuuuuce! --Sam Graham

Why YOU need to own this dvd..........2007-07-23
If you want to see what a rock legend looks like, it is imperative that you watch this, possibly more than once.
A true rock legend is someone who actually transcends the genre. This DVD captures a man in his element, in his time, doing what he was put on this earth to do, without shame and without remorse. To put it simply, he plays and sings every note as if it were his last. He seizes the day and lays bare his passions. This is more than a rock concert, it is a lesson on how to live your life.
I'm not your typical gushing fan. I'm not going to say "All Hail Bruce Spingsteen, he's my hero!". Frankly, I don't know the man and I don't believe in hero-worship. But what I do know is that he understands his job and he does it very, very well. He knows how to touch people, how to lift their spirits and get them to aspire to something better. He speaks from his heart. His show is, in many ways, a religious experience-with ONE IMPORTANT DISTINCTION. It is all-inclusive. It's all there for the asking. You don't have to be a certain type of person, or subscribe to a particular set of beliefs in order to be a part of this. All you have to do is say "Yes, my heart is open. I want to be happy.". And, of course, you have to buy a ticket. There's no mission without margin, after all.
Bruce transcends the rock 'n' roll genre because he refuses to be defined by it. He acknowledges that he is an entertainer, but yet he continues to approach his work in earnest, with a certain reverence that makes it more important than what it otherwise would be. He understands that, above all, music is a means of communication. It is a way to connect with your fellow man and find common ground. He's not isolating himself from the audience. He's not talking about things that others can't understand. He's not trying to be vague and inscrutable. He's an idealist, a humanist, and he is using his medium to push us all to higher ground.
This DVD is about the church of the common man. And I say "Amen, my brothers and sisters. Throw off your shackles and be free!!!". Sing it loud and sing it proud Bruce. This DVD is what rock 'n' roll was meant to be. It's emotional, it's raw, it's honest. After watching this show I can honestly say that there is a force in the universe that moves us from within, and one of it's manifestations is Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band. The only question that remains is "Will you testify?".
Very Good.......2007-07-10

The Boss is the Ultimate Boss.......2007-06-11
Everytime I play this DVD, I feel I am in the audience dancing around like a whirligig! What a privilege it would have been to be in the audience. Bruce was at the top of his form, the audience was stoked. What a joy to have this, especially after I taped it off HBO when it was first aired. If you love the Boss and the E Street Band, this DVD is for you. Buy it. It is history!
Don't think -- buy now.......2007-02-21
Fifty years from now, after the Springsteen songbook has been fully mined, some singer/musician will do some research and discover that not only was Bruce Springsteen the most prolific songwriter of the 20th century, but also its most charismatic performer.
Such will be the legacy of Springsteen. He will be acknowledged as the greatest of all American songwriters of the 20th century, bar none.
It is hard to imagine the E Street Band being in finer form than as recorded at these 2000 Madison Square Garden performances.
I consider myself extremely fortunate in that I was unfamiliar with the songs "Youngstown" and "Land of Hope and Dreams", which are for me the highlights of this set. Quite frankly, there is nothing that is not magnificent on this set. It ranges from the merely phenomenal to the extra-galactic.
"Land of Hope and Dreams" is a song that belongs to the ages.
It strikes me as noteworthy that these performances preceded 9/11, and thus "The Rising".
Bruce is an American icon. He is fundamentally that most precious of things: A Good Man. He is also a patriot who loves his America, the land of hope and dreams.
And then came 9/11. And Bush's war. And Abu Ghraib. And the destruction of America's reputation among it's European allies that is saved from fascism half a century ago.
This concert(s) mark a point in time. A true "end of innocence".
Other highlights:
You have to see the opening sequence of "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" to believe it.
"If I should Fall Behind"
"American Skin (41 Shots)"
But really, it's all great.
At this point in time, the ESB is nothing short of magnificent. I did not fully appreciate their abilities until seeing this.
The vocal harmonies, so diverse, are beautiful. Nils and Patty -- wow!
Max on drums. He's first rate.
Nils guitar playing? Pat Methany would sit up and take notice of his solo on "Youngstown."
I could go on. Just order the damn thing now. It will become a prized possession, trust me.
Bruce kills em'..........2007-02-18
This concert, shot for HBO, was just a phenominal concert. Great to see Little Steven back with the band, even though his voice makes my head hurt. Amazon got me the video very quickly, the prompt service I've come to expect to Amazon and most of their affiliates. Thanks Amazon, I'm well pleased again!

Help! My volume won't go up any more!.......2007-06-16
You can't crank this loud enough. Bruce is the best live performer bar none. There are so many amazing, no, make that AMAZING performances on this DVD but all you have to do is watch one to be a believer--tune it right to "Born in the USA." You cannot look away. The energy is like nothing else, it is truly incredible that the energy can still be conveyed via a DVD. Even more incredible is that you then remember that Bruce is playing the song in Spain. This is a mind-blowing DVD.
Pure Springsteen Exuberance.......2007-01-04
Great fun! Like all Springsteen live performances, he puts everything into it and surely earns his pay. The music selection is great and the video coverage is complete enough that you really feel a part of the audience.
The audio is pretty good, but I find at high volume, which suits this type of music, the lyrics can seem muffled. However, the spirit of the performance is infectious and the lyrics less important. So, ramp it up and enjoy!

Great Concert.......2006-03-23
I admit that I'm a Bruce Springsteen fan, but I don't necessarily like all of his music. I had taped this concert, or at least an edited hour of it, on network television over a year ago. While I was off for about 2 1/2 weeks over this past Christmas holidays, I reaquainted myself with it. I watched parts of it over and over even though I had bought 5 concert DVD's that I'd planned to watch over the holidays and hadn't even watched 3 of them. I thought the concert was great, with the songs being in the same vein as his Tunnel of Love CD, which I really liked.
While I was watching the Texas - USC game in the Rose Bowl, I mistakenly put this tape in the VCR to record that night's episode of Law and Order. I was in grief when I realized that I'd recorded over the concert. I tried a couple of different sources to get another copy of that concert with no luck. I didn't know the concert was from his tour of The Rising album because I'd never heard the CD. I checked out a copy of this CD from our public library and saw that it must be, and that Amazon had a concert of this album that was recorded in Barcelona. I took a chance that this was the concert that I'd recorded and was overjoyed when I found that it was.
I have Springsteen's Complete Anthology and Concert in New York DVD's, but I like this one way better. Knowing that many of the songs are about 9/11 and understanding the context of the lyrics makes the concert even better. Clarence is in fine form on sax, plus I liked his wife Patti's and sister Soozie's performances. They all just love the audience going crazy over the concert. Great concert!
Excellent concert DVD.......2006-03-13
I've been to 3 Bruce concerts, and this DVD concert is better than any I went to. The power, and passion Bruce and the entire band exert is energizing, especially in the opening song "The Rising". The addition of Suzie Tyrell to the band is as Bruce sings on "Crush On You" c'est manifique! She delivers a sound, and a warm-friendly look which captured my attention. This concert DVD is a must see. I'm just praying it will be digitally mastered to CD, because I'll be the first to purchase it.

Call it Boss in a Box. This two-disc set of music videos and concert performances is a must for any Springsteen fan. While the 1989 VHS version contained just 18 songs, the expanded DVD set has 33 performances dating through 2000, including "The Ghost of Tom Joad," performed in 1995 on The Tonight Show, and an acoustic "Born in the U.S.A." from a 1998 appearance on The Charlie Rose Show. Most of the highlights are, not surprisingly, from Springsteen's electrifying concerts, including raw versions of "Rosalita" and "Thunder Road" from early in his career with the E Street Band. Also not to be missed: the 1987 performance of the harrowing "Tougher Than the Rest," shot with poignant close-ups of wife Patti Scialfa singing backup; the raspy, gospel- tinged "Leap of Faith"; and the barely contained smolder of "Fire." Most fans will find themselves wishing that this was strictly a concert DVD; the MTV videos from the Born in the U.S.A. years (the John Sayles-directed trilogy "Born in the U.S.A.," "I'm on Fire," and "Glory Days") seem too canned and glossy sandwiched in with the rougher, more exhilarating live performances. And Springsteen's tendency to get preachy in the late '90s ("Murder Incorporated," "Dead Man Walkin'") can grate as well. But until there's a full-length performance DVD, the Video Anthology will keep fans on their feet. --Anne Hurley

Could've been so much more but a great collection. .......2004-12-16
First: They should've waited until "The Rising".
Second: Bruce has pro-shot footage dating back to 1972-1973. Starting it at 1978 with "Rosalita", running through "Born in the USA" and then "Born to Run" at the end, not to mention a mid-90s "Hungry Heart" promo on the second. The continuity is kind of wacky.
There's a whole show filmed for "No Nukes". There's "Austin City Limits" (which no one can find). There's 1975 footage at the Roxy in LA, and a BBC shot show at the Hammersmith as well as other shows that have been circulating on bootlegs. The Neil Young "Bridge" concert. The Barcelona video's great, but the marathon shows he used to do should really be out there for all of us to see...
Once Bruce started doing videos, he wound up getting top-name directors like Brian DePalma, John Sayles,Jonathan and Ted Demme. A lot of them are memorable and beautifully shot, but a lot of the "Born in the USA" footage just makes you wonder why he hasn't put out one of the shows on DVD. You see a bit of E Street history, including the era where he ditched those guys for a while, then working with them on "Murder Inc.". "Streets of Philadelphia" and "Beautiful Disguise" have Bruce singing live to a backing track, very unusual.
Bruce's fans will love this, but they'll love it more if they put out some of the footage that made people enchanted with his shows.
I was happy with my purchase!.......2004-09-05
Given that it did maybe have a few crappy camera angels & lighting; how could anybody be unhappy with their purchase after seeing him prance around in a pair of tight pants? This DVD collection made me wish I could have seen him in concert...
Near Perfect!.......2004-03-15
A nice summary of Bruce's early video work. However, why the edit on "Rosalita" - the band introductions (which were originally included when the video came out in the 80's) were a lot of fun. I'd love to find a copy of them.
Otherwise, a great presentation
Good live performances on disk 1.......2003-12-25
Disk 1 is very good with live performances. Disk 2 was not that great and is videos. I wanted the song Rosalita as that is the best song and is missing from latest DVD's.
Ecompasses the Best of Springsteen.......2003-06-30
This chonological colection of Springsteen's work is great for any Springsteen fan. The 2 DVD set is essentially his greatest hits in video form. A lot of these videos are live performances and show how great Bruce Springsteen is as a live performer. Bruce Springsteen truly is The Boss, and this video collection adds to the legacy. Highlights of the DVD include a rivoting live performance of War, found on the bos set, and a rare version of Fire, a song he wrote for the Pointer Sisters. This also shows some of the later work, including Secret Garden from Jerry Maguire, and Murder Incorporated from his greatest hits album. 4 out of 5 because of Weak representation form the pre-BITUSA era.

This intimate documentary is a must-have for Bruce Springsteen fans, capturing a magical time in 1995 when the Boss and the E Street Band reunited in New York's Hit Factory for their first studio sessions in 11 years. During the recording of new songs for Springsteen's 1995 Greatest Hits release, filmmaker Ernie Fritz was given full access to the band's collaborative process, including the live music video performance of "Murder Incorporated" for filmmaker Jonathan Demme. While bandmates and studio personnel offer insights about their history under Springsteen's democratic leadership, two people make particularly memorable impressions. First, Springsteen's longtime producer- manager Jon Landau is seen as a benevolent guiding force, with eloquent opinions about the uniqueness of Springsteen's artistic vision. Then there is Springsteen, revealed here as a genuine working-class hero, playful and generous while remaining intensely focused on finding the perfect approach to each new song. --Jeff Shannon

The documentary Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Blood Brothers chronicles recording sessions for songs included on the 1995 triple platinum CD Bruce Springsteen Greatest Hits, and captures Springsteen in the studio with the E Street Band for the first time since their work on 1984's Born in the U.S.A. The DVD features interactive menus, lyrics, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, and additional special features.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Blood Brothers premiered on The Disney Channel March 3, 1996. TV Guide described the documentary as "superlative," and added: "Ernie Fritz's film is more than a record of a legendary band's reunion. It offers a glimpse of Springsteen that fans rarely see." Blood Brothers was released on VHS on November 19, 1996. A double-sided laser disc version of the film was first released on October 1, 1996. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Blood Brothers features music from the songs "Blood Brothers," "High Hopes," "This Hard Land," "Back in Your Arms Again," and "Without You," as well as music videos for "Murder Incorporated" and "Secret Garden."

inside look at E street band.......2006-07-05
This was a very good look at a band that clearly are friends. The dynamics in the studio are amazingly loose.Clearly Bruce had it worked out in his mind but let the band members bring their own creativity to the process.
They had not been in the studio in years yet were able to bring it together in what appeared to be fairly quickly.
The depth of feeling between band members was obvious and felt real.
Very enjoyable and some great music.
Wonderful, wonderful!.......2005-02-15
This DVD is exactly what I hoped it'd be. Intimate.
Tender. Gritty. Real. Getting to see the band together
again, the nervousness, the ease with which they get
back into the groove is great. Having a window into
these moments is priceless. It's the closest I'll ever
get to the band I'm sure, and I'm grateful they allowed
us this glimpse into their lives, the band, and the
process of recording. There were a few moments
when the emotion of the songs and their collective
delivery, reduced me to tears. One special moment
to me is when they celebrated Clarence's birthday
at the studio. That's good stuff. Worth every
penny. There's no way to recommend it highly
enough, to old fans or new!
A collectors dream..........................2004-02-21
This a nice little edition to my collection of Bruce films. I bought this the day it came out, very good and very insightful on how the songs are created. Bruce just comes into the room and starts playing the songs while the other guys are taking notes, its like a classroom on how to build a song. Its like Bruce wants them to find a way to make the song sound good with there ideas.... hes very generous in that way...I thought it was cool the way he treated the gentlemen with the version of Secret Garden with the strings on it, he treated him decently even though that pompus idiot Bob Clearmountian didnt like it, glad he was outvoted...I personally liked the strings version myself...anyways buy this , you will like it....
Great for any music lover.......2004-02-19
This is a great DVD not only for the Bruce fan, but for anyone who is interested in how records are made. This DVD takes you right inside the studio like no other documentary I've ever seen, from Bruce showing the guys the songs on his acoustic guitar, right down to the tracking and shooting of the video. You'll not only hear from Bruce but from all the members of the E-Street band, the producers and the engineers, as to what it's like to work with him.
There are plenty of classic studio "spinal tap" moments, including Bruce chattering on for five minutes in complete nonsense about the "narrative" of the record and if the new string part on "Secret Garden" interfered with the narrative, they shouldn't use it..."so let that be your guide," and then walks out leaving them in absolute confusion. And then there's Clarence Clemens' melodramatic about the "melodies that were written millions of eons ago" that he's just going to snatch out of the air.
This is a very entertaining DVD for all lovers of music. Highly recommended
If you love Bruce, this is a must see.......2003-12-20
Two films come to mind when watching this, The Beatles "Let It Be" and The Stones,"Sympathy for the Devil". I would rank this below the former and above the latter.
If you love Bruce, this is a must see. One qustion though, why do they devote so much time to his manager talking about the friggin' Press Relase? Is this all that managers do?
Description
The work of Tom Petty is a uniquely-American blend of pop and rock that has paid handsome dividends for the star over the years. With his faithful band The Heartbreakers behind him, Petty lit up stages across the country, and became an unlikely early star of MTV with some innovative video work. Subsequent releases saw him justifiably included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, alongside a stint in supergroup The Travelling Wilburys. SOUNDSTAGE presents a live concert from Petty and his band, with a number of their biggest hits getting a welcome airing.

Well, i tell u 1 thing. Petty kills at SoundStage. The dvd is great, & at a good time in the band's life together, and Lord knows, they've been together for a long time. The show is well made, and the colors & sound are top quality. Recommended video, fur sure.
Horrible, Hey Tom, I hate getting old to okay? .......2006-10-20
Having seen Tom in the 80's and this was one of my all time concerts of the 80's, Mike smoked on the guitar! I was maybe 20 yards away right in front of him, and I went to dozens of concerts from many bands, this is slowwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Yes I know, we all get old. I can believe that, as I am, too. It was painful to watch this whole concert, I kept nodding off, "HUH? its still on?"
And this dvd is NOT closed Captioned, not cool.
But I am not the one that has a 80's concert on VHS ONLY and sinse DVD's have been out for what, 10 years now? and so many bands have updated their VHS to DVD, Tom, its time to

Great sound, picture, and (non) editing.......2006-01-15
The good news here is that the sound quality is excellent, the picture quality is very clear, and the concert is just shown in a normal, natural way - as it should be. That last part might be taken for granted, but too often concert videos can be ruined by herky-jerky fast-cut editing that attempts to make the show more "interesting". Which is really stupid, because if someone is watching the concert, they just want to see and hear the band, not clever editing or lengthy fan shots. Rest assured that this video presents the band itself as the entertainment, not the editing or the crowd. A very good thing.
Since the sound, picture, and editing are so good, I'm tempted to give this 5 stars. But it gets only 4 from me for various reasons. One is that there are 9 "cover" songs here vs. 13 written by Petty/Heartbreakers. Given that the band's own songs are so great, I don't like hearing so many covers, which I consider to be of lesser quality than the band's own songs. If more Petty & Heartbreakers DVD's were available covering the band's own songs, this wouldn't be such a problem. But since this is only one of 3 existing DVDs from the band, "too many" covers is a minor quibble. Then there's the drummer situation. Original drummer Stan Lynch was very creative, yet stayed completely "in synch" with the rest of the band - which made his drumming a big part of the Heartbreaker's success. His replacement, Steve Ferrone, is "ok" but not great, and often seems to lack the cohesion that Lynch had with the rest of the band. So I feel to a great extent that without Stan Lynch on drums, this isn't really THE Heartbreakers. Finally, the price on this set is slightly high, so for all these reasons I can't give the set a full 5 stars.
Still, true fans of the band (and yes I'm one) should definitely get this. I like this a lot better than "High Grass Dogs" (which is very poorly edited, and not great sounding), and it's close to "Live at the Olympic". I do somewhat prefer "Olympic" to this one, mainly because the songs on that one were written by Petty himself (and it's also great sounding and well edited). It's a shame that there aren't more/better concert DVD choices though for a band with such a rich history as this one. My favorite official TP & Heartbreakers concert video was 1991's "Take the Highway", but that's never been on DVD, and now it's not even available on VHS. Same situation with 1985's "Pack up the Plantation", though I didn't like that one as much as "Highway", due both to its jerky editing, as well as the overbearing presence of a horn section and backup singer/dancers. Both of those concerts should be on DVD now though, it's a shame they aren't. And I suppose it would be too much to ask for some of the Heartbreakers' European (or American) tv appearances to be released onto DVD, but they should be too - after all, 20+ year old European shows from Blondie, The Cars, and Bruce Springsteen (among others) have been officially released recently to DVD, so why not something from TP & the Heartbreakers?
An Unbelievable Experience!.......2005-11-30
This is by far the most comprehensive and beautifully filmed footage of Tom & the Heartbreakers yet! The combination of the perfect song selection and crowd reaction makes this something you can enjoy over and over. It is the closest thing to having been at the show -- and yes, Brett, we all are so lucky to have this as such a vivid memory of our fellow bee, Jill, doing what she loved - rocking out!
This is an absolute must-have for your TPATH collection. I speak for all of us that were there in saying that this was one of the most outstanding concert experiences ever!!!! Buy it for fans, non-fans, especially your kids. . . they'll love it!

Tom Petty - A DVD With Meaning And Hope........................2003-11-02
A wonderful DVD with songs that link together a great concept story-line. Mr. Petty speaks his mind to the "Powers That Be" (Joe CEO) that are more interested in the flash in the pan artists that sell their smile (Making Joe CEO Rich) instead of quality music. The music and the lyrics are great. I found the production value to be superior. The additional CD of live music rocks as well. A great value, that I picked up for under fifteen dollars (new). Dreamville is the place to be.........
Writing while I'm Watching.......2003-10-21
I am not sure who amazes me more, Tom Petty or every other member of this band. This concert shows why rock and roll will never die. Tom Petty, "old and bitter"? I think not. Fortunately for us, he seems to keep getting better. The sound makes this DVD - but how visual do you need to be at a Tom Petty and the HB's concert anyway!
Tom Petty is The Man!.......2003-09-23
For the true Tom Petty fan, this is a must. I have not been able to see TP & the HP's in concert in years and this just made me smile. I get chills everytime I hear "Like a Diamond". Tom has stayed true to what he believes in and that has only made me even a more loyal fan. This also includes my two teenage daughters who also think you are The Man! Thanks Tom!
Petty Rocks.......2003-09-17
I've always thought that studio albums don't even compare with live performances. I've also always loved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. But even I was astounded at how great "The Last DJ" sounds live. From the opening notes of the title track to Mike Campbell's solo on "Lost Children" to the final chords of "Can't Stop The Sun", Tom and the Heartbreakers sound incredible. It's almost like listening to a completely new album. And that's not all. The band goes on to play classics including "Change of Heart" and "I Need To Know", then closes with a ten-minute-long "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and a "You Wreck Me" encore.
Unfortunately, the editing is poor. In some songs the camera changes every three seconds. Some shots don't last for more than half a second. Occasionally the camera will slow down for a minute to watch Tom sing or to pan across the stage, but it doesn't happen often enough. One of the longest shots is of a woman in the audience singing along to two verses of a song. Who knows what's happening on stage. Also, the lighting on some camera shots leaves a lot to be desired. In other places, however, the colors and lighting effects are awesome. Overall, the quality of the music makes the camera problems seem minor.
The extra features are hardly worth mentioning: two TV commercials promoting "The Last DJ" album and some random outtakes of Tom making a video.
As of this time, Amazon hasn't included a track listing, so...
The Last DJ - Money Becomes King - Dreamville - Joe - When A Kid Goes Bad - Like A Diamond - Lost Children - Blue Sunday - You And Me - The Man Who Loves Women - Have Love Will Travel - Can't Stop The Sun - Change Of Heart - I Need To Know - Shake Rattle And Roll - Around And Around - Mary Jane's Last Dance - You Wreck Me
Amazon is also selling the DVD with a bonus CD, which features four songs from the band's appearance on PBS's Soundstage program:
I'm Crying - Done Somebody Wrong - I Got A Woman - Carol
If you own the Soundstage DVD, it's hardly worth the extra [money].
So, what more do you want? It's Tom Petty live. Buy it.

Nils Lofgren Puts On A Guitar Clinic.......2006-11-26
Music DVD Review: Nils Lofgren & Friends Live Acoustic
Somewhere about midway through this great DVD, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, one of the numerous "friends" who join Nils Lofgren here--and no guitar slouch himself--offers the following assessment of Lofgren:
"There are three kinds of guitar people. There are guitar owners, and there's about a million of those. There are guitar players, and there's a few of those. Then there are guitarists," Baxter says turning to look at his friend Lofgren. "Nils writes great songs. He sings beautifully. But there are only a few people who can do what he does with a guitar."
To be sure, Nils Lofgren has written some damn fine songs over the years. It's possible you may have even heard a few of them. The funky "I Came to Dance," the lovely ballad "Valentine," or his ode to a Rolling Stone "Keith Don't Go" come to mind.
However it's far more likely you haven't, as Nils Lofgren is best known as a sideman. You know him for his fine work on Neil Young albums like After The Gold Rush. You even more likely know him as that guitarist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band who looks like a sawed-off cross between Keith Richards and Joey from Friends. You remember right? Nils was that guy who did the backflips off a trampoline on the Born In The USA tour. He even did a solo album called Flip around that time.
The thing is, what a lot of people don't know about Lofgren is that he is a world class guitarist. Although he has had his moments with Springsteen--the solos on the title tracks of both Tunnel Of Love and The Rising are just two such moments uniquely stamped with his signature--Lofgren's virtuoso ability is largely swallowed up in the big noise created by the E Street Band.
Not so on this great DVD. Recorded live over three nights at a place called the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia before a rapt audience of hard core fans, Lofgren is joined here by an assortment of friends including three of his guitar playing brothers. In a set that covers his lengthy career from his first band Grin to last year's solo album Sacred Weapon, Lofgren shows that he is indeed a great, perhaps even under-appreciated singer-songwriter.
But mostly he puts on what basically amounts to a guitar clinic. Of the numerous musical highlights on this DVD--and there are many of them--none of them match simply watching Lofgren play his instrument. Whether you are a musician or not, seeing Lofgren's technique in the several closeup shots shown here is just nothing short of amazing.
Lofgren doesn't merely strum or pick the strings the way that many guitarists do. He plays the entire instrument. He strums it open-handed at times, using all four fingers and his thumb at the same time. At other times, particularly when playing in the open-ended harmonics he so often favors here, Lofgren will play from the top of the neck all the way down the fretboard. The resulting sounds you wind up actually hearing are simply as stunning as they are beautiful.
Lofgren plays in this harmonic based style completely solo on "Keith Don't Go," making the one acoustic guitar he plays sound more like two playing at once. You hear both the lower bass parts and the higher notes. On "Girl In Motion" he continues to play in the harmonic style while switching over to an electric guitar. Here he takes one of the countless stunning solos heard throughout this DVD, as Buck Brown's equally dextrous fingers match him note for note on the keys.
By the time of "Because The Night," (the only tune played here not written by Lofgren), there is a full compliment of guitarists onstage in the form of Lofgren's brothers Tom, Mike, and Mark. Together, they make as big as noise in their own way on the Patti Smith hit as Springsteen does when it's played in stadiums with the E Street Band. There's also yet another of those great, crying guitar solos from Nils.
Earlier in the set, Nils also comes across as an engaging, even funny performer at times. Knowing he has this particular crowd eating out of his hand, he promises a long night early, joking that "I couldn't take a show this long myself, so if you need to get up and get a drink, you won't hurt our feelings." Performing solo acoustic, Lofgren seques nicely from a lovely sounding "I Found You" into the borderline spanish style of "You". Lofgren's playing here takes on such a dramatic, flamenco type of feel you half expect sagebrush to go floating across the stage.
On "Black Books," Lofgren goes back to electric and proceeds to take off on yet another harmonic fueled solo tear, as Buck Brown's pastoral synthesizer provides a swirling backdrop. For "Valentine" and "Tender Love," Lofgren is joined by Baxter and Mary Ann Redmond for a round of vocal duets. At one point during "Tender Love," Lofgren stops and says "we gotta do that again." After replaying the track a few times, I still couldn't locate the apparent screw-up here.
When Lofgren later uses improvised song lyrics to announce "It's so nice to have friends who play so great, I feel so inspired think I'll take a break," he leaves the stage to Baxter and Buck Brown who use the spotlight to get into a tasty little guitar duel of their own.
Bob Berberich, who was Lofgren's one-time partner in Grin joins him here for a reprise of Grin songs "Everybody's Missing The Sun" and "Aint Love Nice." The show finally draws to a close with "I Came To Dance," "No Mercy," and a searing "Moon Tears" which features another Lofgren solo which begins dark and bluesy before taking a left turn into Hendrix territory.
The extras on this DVD include several bonus tracks, including a few I've already mentioned here such as "Because The Night" and "Keith Don't Go." There is also a backstage interview where Nils talks about his shaky start doing acoustic performances at a time when he felt "a little more naked and exposed." He humorously recalls one early gig with several false starts where he was "waiting for the fire alarm to go off." There is also footage from the rehearsals for the shows captured here.
On Live Acoustic, Nils Lofgren & Friends more than prove their mettle as performers, and Lofgren's songs alone are enough to make for a great night. But if you appreciate watching a great, if criminally underrated guitarist do his thing nearly as much as I do, this DVD rates as required viewing and listening.
Finally a Nils DVD!.......2006-11-24
This is a terrific DVD.Nils is a genius. My only complaints are that the dvd is only in stereo and there is no booklet in the dvd case. The picture quality is great as is the stereo only sound. My favorite song is one of the bonus tracks-Mud In Your Eye.

Enjoyable.......2007-06-12
IMO if you like Bruce you will like this. Nothing exceptional, no chances taken, just a couple of hours with Bruce. The band meshed nicely, the only stand out being the drummer, other than Bruce. The sound mix was average, the video good. It's enjoyable.
if you like improvisation, you'll like this.......2007-04-04
Hornsby's musical talent is phenomenal. Sound quality on this DVD is fine although some of Sonny Emery's fine cymbal work is lost in the mix. I agree with others that the video quality is shy. Look at Boz Scagg's Greatest Hits Live for an example of superior sound & picture reproduction. Bruce's voice still commands attention after all the years performing. Outstanding tracks I think are "The Way It Is" and "Fortunate Son" which is mixed with Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". Wonderful.
Great sound, great performances, shame about the video.......2006-12-05
What a band and what stellar performances! My only complaint is that the video isn't anamorphic. On a wide screen set, you get black bars on all FOUR sides, and the image floats in the middle of the screen. What's really odd is that the documentary making-of IS anamorphic! Makes me wonder if someone at Sony didn't screw up.
Great Live Concert!.......2006-07-28
I was looking for a Bruce Hornsby dvd and after reading reviews on what was available I decided to take a chance on this one. Glad I did as this was a great show with a killer band! I've always liked Bruce and was hooked from the first album and bought the second cd when it came out. But for whatever reason I didn't keep up with him after that. This dvd exposed me to alot of great music that I've missed over the years and so I had to go purchase several cd's of Bruce Hornsby that I didn't have. The sound and picture are great on my surround sound system. If your a Bruce Hornsby fan you'll not be disappointed and if you aren't familiar with his music then it is a great place to start.
Astounding Music with Other-Worldly Virtuosity and Musicianship. Merely Average Video Quality........2006-07-09
First, in my 51 years on this planet, I've never heard anyone who encapsulates, integrates and unifies so many musical influences, with jaw-dropping virtuosity, improvisation and musicianship like Bruce Hornsby. If you listen 'inside' Bruce's music you can hear elements of Bluegrass, Folk, Country, Blues, Jazz, Rock, Cajun, Soul, Gospel, and probably a few other genres I can't think of right now.
In my humble opinion, Bruce Hornsby is the finest musician in America, and arguably on this planet, today.
This DVD captures performances that are timeless, memorable and mesmerizing. The documentary is fascinating and informative. I'll leave it to the other reviews to go into specifics songs critiques.
However, I'm disappointed by the video quality on this DVD. I was disappointed to find that the DVD is not anamorphic, only letterboxed, limiting the image potential.
On my HD home theater setup (720p Epson 550 projector / 106" Optoma screen / Oppo 720p HDMI DVD player), the image is slightly 'foggy'. The image lacks the clarity, impact, and 'punch' of most well-recorded concerts. The focus is soft as well. The color balance is towards the yellowish cast you get when you use outdoor film indoors with incandescent lighting. This may have been the directors attempt to give the image some 'warmth', but it looks unnatural. You never see color like this in person, at a real concert. Had this been shot many years ago, I could forgive the mediocre image. Sadly, I imagine the cameras used to record the concert are the culprit, and not the DVD mastering, so a future HD DVD is likely to be of little improvement.
Man, I HATE giving this only four stars!!!
I have to, though, to be objective and informative to those who consider all aspects of a DVD release.
Sound quality is five stars, music and performances are worth ten stars, but had the video clarity been that of an average modern concert DVD, I could give it the five stars the music deserves.

heartland.......2007-09-12
Excellent film for those who enjoy looking back into a realistic history of early 19th century american life in the west. It is rich earthy and touching as you watch these people struggle with nature. My father grew up on a farm and remembers many of the authentic images of farm and ranch equipment. I would recommend this film to any one who wants to watch a film about the reality of the period.
Real Life on Film -- And Still a Great Movie!.......2007-05-01
My grandmother and grandfather homesteaded in Wyoming in 1910, and luckily for me, my grandmother was a wonderful storyteller. We learned about the obligation to feed a cowboy passing through (for next to nothing, no matter how poor your were), about the fact that eating prairie dog was a sign that you were nearly starving. Their nearest neighbors were 7 miles away, so any emergency had to be dealt with on their own.
When this first came to theatres, I went with my family (our grandparents had died by then), and we literally staggered out afterwards. Our grandparents' story had become so real that it was overwhelming.
All this reality, and the fact that the film was partially funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, could give the idea that it was one of those "stuffy, documentary-type" films that tries so hard to re-create history that it lacks drama. There is drama aplenty in "Heartland," and marvelouos acting. The dialogue is sparse: the actors' faces and movements, their actions, the images speak eloquently of hardship, cooperation, trust and beauty.
Great movie.......2007-02-12
Heartland is a great representation of life on the frontier on the early 20th century. This is a picture of what life was really like and is based on the real lives of real people. It is just wonderful, and I wanted it to go on so that I could still follow these people as they face the day to day challenges of living on the frontier. Conchatta Ferrell and Rip Torn are just wonderful in this movie. You forget they are acting and just accept them as the real thing. I reccomend this to all ages.
One of the best true-to-life movies ever.......2006-11-03
Low key and undramatic in it's presentation, this is nevertheless riveting. It is a slice of life, in the finest sense of the term. The scene is one year in the life of a small group of people, set in turn of the century Wyoming. The story has, at it's center, two strong-willed individuals - a widow with a young daughter to provide for, and her new employer, a brusk ranch owner in need of a housekeeper.
The harsh realities of this time and place are neither side-stepped, romanticized nor over dramatized, but instead are simply dealt with honestly and matter-of-factly, as do the characters themselves. It is not a comedy, though there are moments of hilarity. It is not a tragedy, despite desperately tragic moments. It is as if a window opened and we are graced with a glimpse of the past.
This honesty is the true heart of the story and is the result of the fact that it is a true story, that of the daughter, whose understated presence in the movie is dealt with as straight-forwardly as all the rest.
I am now on my third copy - 2 worn out VCR tapes later, I now own it on DVD and highly recommend it to anyone with the heart to bear it.
DVD - HEARTLAND.......2006-07-08
IT MAKES YOU APPRECIATE THE LIFE WE LIVE TODAY IN COMPARISON WITH THE LIFE IN 1910. MY WIFE HAD READ THE BOOK OF LETTERS THIS LADY WROTE TO A FORMER EMPLOYER IN DENVER AND WANTED TO SEE THE MOVIE. IT WAS A GOOD MOVIE AND REFLECTED THE TIME FRAME OF THAT PERIOD.

Only option available.......2007-03-25
It's an okay music video, but since it's the only one that the BoDeans have out you have little choice if you want to watch them at home. The sound and video quality are ok. I have no idea why they decided to fade the tracks and rearrange the concert song order for the DVD release. It's annoying and distracting. Still, they are one of my favorites and I enjoy watching this video release.
Average Output for an Above Average Band.......2007-03-25
I for one was very excited when I heard the Bodeans were coming out with another live set. They are easily one of the greatest live bands anybody could hope to see. "Joe Dirt Car" is bar none one of the best live compilations I've ever heard, so this one had a lot to live up to. While the group is starting to show their age, not one thing about the quality of their performance has dwindled. The vocals and guitar playing are as good as ever, and with Kenny Aronoff on drums, you are ensured a fabulous rhythm section.
The set list overall is pretty solid. Touring on their latest album Resolution, songs like "(We Can) Live" and "If It Makes You" are great additions to an already packed set list. "Texas Ride Song" and "Still the Night" are the greatest of singalongs, and of course no Bodeans set would be complete without their hits "Closer to Fine" and "Good Things".
My biggest beef with this DVD is the quality, which goes from bad to just plain atrocious in some parts. I get the impression the Pabst isn't really set up to do much concert filming. I'm sure it's a great venue and all, but the camera angles along with the overall film quality was mostly distracting. In today's day and age, you can certainly shoot a better concert...maybe the budget just wasn't there.
Overall I'd say it's worth a watch, but probably not a buy. Grab it from Netflix rather than spend your money. I would, however, recommend the CD version of this show. From a listening perspective, an average Bodeans show is still better than most other bands.
Great show, great DVD!.......2006-07-11
This was a really good show! The video and audio quality is great, and it also contains some bonus material of "Still the Night", "Good Work", and "Idaho" and behind the scenes footage from the rooftop performance at the Pabst theatre. The only flaw is that they cut out "Said Hello", "Good Work" and "Idaho" that was played at the actual show. But anyway, this was a great show.
I'm their biggest fan, and this is an awesome DVD!!!.......2006-06-26
Showing the true work of the BoDeans, this DVD features the entire New Years Eve concert going into 2005. Released on November 8, this DVD contains classic BoDeans songs, including "Naked", "Good Things", "Fadeaway", "Still the Night", "She's A Runaway", including the intro of Del Shannon's "Runaway", the edit of "Feed the Fire", and of course, the BoDeans #1 song, "Closer to Free", which was the theme song to "Party for Five." It also contains the new work of The BoDeans, including "(We Can) Live", "Sleep", "617", and the #1 single off the new record called Resolution, "If It Makes You." Total, there are 18 songs played throughout the entire concert. But wait, there"s more! This DVD also contains some sweet bonus special features! High energy concert video - just one flaw away from being perfect..........2006-05-19
I've really started digging The BoDeans - especially their live material. This video is really fun to watch - lots of energy and the band really plays their hearts out.
Only complaint is - who is the genius that decided to cut the songs into individual units and not leave it one concert from start to finish? It's like you lose momentum after every song. You get revved up and rocking, then a fade into silence, then a fade into the next song. It's concertus interruptus, and it's not good.
Having said that, I'd love to go see these guys on tour sometime. If you like good roots rock music, this DVD is well worth picking up.
