4 out of 5 stars Massive Dose of Martial Arts Mayhem.......2007-05-06

One of the better live action versions of a Japanese Manga out there. I mean, how can you hate a movie where the antagonist and protagonist are Caucasians with Asian names, and the female love interest is Asian with a Caucasian name?

1 out of 5 stars Dismally Bad Live-Action Version of Popular Japanese Manga Series.......2006-09-26

There was a brief period around 1995-7 when Toei, one of the major film companies in Japan, produced a string of now forgotten films featuring B-list English-speaking actor(s). Those films usually included Japanese actors as part of main cast or supports, and many of them were theatrically released in Japan (though none of them became a commercial hit). Today not many people know such titles as `No Way Back' (featuring then unknown Russell Crowe and Kelly Hu), `Countdown' (with Lori Petty'), `Final Vendetta' (with Brigitte Wilson) and `Crying Freeman' (directed by Christophe Gans). Except for `Crying Freeman' which is a decent action film, they are mostly unremarkable films.

`Fist of the North Star' was made during this period. The big difference is that its post-WWIII story derives from hugely popular Japanese manga series `Fist of the North Star' (`Hokuto no Ken'). Ask any Japanese under 40, and you will realize the popularity of the series. Well, not everyone liked it, but this comic created by Buronson and Tesuo Hara.became popular during the 1980s, and then TV animation version started, which also became a hit.

But this live-action version of `North Star' falls flat completely. It uses the earlier chapters of the original comic as the main story, in which we follow the battles of a stoic fighter named Kenshiro (Gary Daniels) in the bleak, post-apocalyptic world plagued with violence. Blood thirsty gangsters attack the villagers, and they steal and kill mercilessly. It is the world of the second `Mad Max' film (which greatly influenced the original comic), but unlike Mel Gibson's character Kenshiro (whose character is partly based on Bruce Lee) fights the villains with his original kung-fu, which causes the enemy's body explode (yes, literally, like `The `Scanners').

Unfortunately, however, it doesn't happen in this film because it is so CHEAP! The unimaginative production designs are mainly about mud, old factory, and wilderness with green screen behind it. Nothing is thrilling in here - you see hammy Clint Howard playing a despicable baddie with hammy Chris Penn playing another despicable baddie. Japanese actress Isako Washio plays bland Julia, Kenshiro's love, and it is not a good sign when you see Malcolm McDowell sitting like a Buddhist monk.

The story is sometimes hard to follow because of its confusing narrative, and it often goes on and on with talks, talks, and talks. Former kick-boxing champion Gary Daniels can show very good fight scenes, and he surely shows them briefly, but when that happens, the film is almost over.

My advice is again `Stick to the original' or in this case, original Japanese cartoon series. It is not perfect, but it is more exciting and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars gary daniels kick ass.......2006-09-13

this is gary daniels best performance so far, i havent seen or read the cartoon/comics, but this is a good entertainment movie. and the budget issnt that low. watch it, it is a must own

1 out of 5 stars fists will fly, and heads will NOT explode!!!.......2006-07-21

nobody explodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no one! i can't stress that enough. no one suffers the true wrath of the fist of the north star. if you are a fan of the animated series then don't watch this movie. it will only make you hate the person who made it. if you are a fan of martial arts movies, don't watch this movie because it will make you hate all of the actors in this movie. if you are a fan of mullets don't watch this movie because it will forever detract from the joy that courses through your veins everytime you see a remarkable quaff of hockey hair. if you are a fan of cheasy b movies then i also strongly suggest that you do not watch this one because it will make you hate yourself. this movie sucks on levels that you didn't even know existed. it sucks more than going on a blind date with with your mom. it sucks more than watching rosie o'donnell and liza minelli strip down and wrestle in creamed corn and chick peas. worse than a drunk near sighted proctologist with cold hands and long nails. it sucks more than pamela anderson having hep c. or like seeing your grandmother getting out of the shower. like sifting through dog poop looking for worms this movie will leave you feeling like you need a shower. is this movie better than a sharp stick in the eye? no, if somone stabbed you in the eye with any stick while you were watching this movie, then you would thank them for their mercy. save your sanity and do not, under any circumstances, watch this movie. gary daniels sucks and nobody explodes!

1 out of 5 stars Remake is defentaly needed badly!.......2005-08-27

I was excited when this came out in 1995 and saw it in Tokyo. This was my favorite Japanese comic at the time. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst adaptations I could have never imagined. Although there were a few good fight effects, it did not make up for the poor screenwriting and plot. I want to remake this film with a big actor, and all the characters needed. This could be like "Lord of the Rings: Trilogy". The comic is tight, and the story is deep. So please don't watch this film. Read the comic and then let your imagination soar!!!

Description

Legendary painter, graffiti artist, poet and musician Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was only 19 years old when he played the lead in DOWNTOWN 81, a striking "lost" film that chronicles the explosive early-'80s Manhattan art and music scene. Completed and theatrically released two decades later, it's the story of a charismatic artist who attempts to sell a painting amidst the rappers, junkies, strippers, models and art-world matriarchs of a pre-Giuliani Lower East Side. This vividly entertaining slice of life is also a fabulous showcase for the music of Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Tuxedomoon, The Plastics, DNA, The Lounge Lizards, and Basquiat's own band, Gray. Shot on location, DOWNTOWN 81 not only captures one of the most important and provocative artists of the 20th-century as he is poised for worldwide fame, but is also a vivid snapshot of a New York City that no longer exists.

2 out of 5 stars An Oddity.......2007-03-21

I thought the movie was disjointed, it lacked subject matter. Very odd.

1 out of 5 stars Hard to watch..........2006-07-10

I am also a fan of Basquiat and of Schnabel's movie.

I loved watching the taped interviews of Basquiat available at MOCA-LA during the last Basquiat exhibiit. (I believe they're available on YOU-TUBE now.)

I found "Downtown 81" extremely painful to watch as I felt Basquiat was being exploited by this film maker. For me, he was "produced and directed" and painfully not himself.

2 out of 5 stars It was Ok i think.......2006-03-14

pretty raw outlook in the life of Basquiat
I'm an avid fan so i have no regrets having this.

1 out of 5 stars Got. To. BE. Kidding........2005-09-28

OK, Basquiat, at age 19- see the actual person. PERIOD(so wonderfully played by Wright in movie "Basquiat")What a major trainwreck of film this is.Should have stayed where it was buried. Sorry, won't waste my time to list all the many, very many reasons, already wasted my money.

4 out of 5 stars a bunch of artists glorifying their scene--as they well should........2005-08-27

If you're expecting a documentary of Basquiat, you will be sorely dissapointed. If you're expecting a movie qua movie, you'll be less dissapointed, but not as much. Downtown 81 is at the very least an art film that happens to feature Basquiat, as well as the "stars" of nyc circa '79. If you have never seen films of this type you are in for a ride. Apropos of this genre, Downtown 81 is ostensibly low budget, quirky, but most of all, historical. Historical not in the sense that it is an important film, but rather historical as a document. Not since Mondo New York have i encountered a film that captures so well the feeling, mood, vibe, and color of this so very interesting period in both the underground of New York, but also the art scene. I would even add that it gives one a glimpse of life in general in what the description on the reverse of the package calls "pre-Giuliani New York"; a very different Manhatten than what we all might expect.

As both a fan of Basquiat and of Schnabel's movie, I would assume the other fans of either or both will find this film quite entertaining. Otherwise, I recommend it for anyone interested in the 80's art scene, the early nyc punk/new wave scene, or those curious about the underbelly of the nyc of this period.

Additionally, what makes this release so interesting and important are the extras, especially the segment from an early cable tv show featuring Basquiat during the SAMO years.

All in all, not a bad bang for the buck, as well as a great addition to any cd collection of one whose curiosity has been piqued by this particular time.

When Leta (Melissa De Sousa) gets a job as an assistant to a big-time rap video director, she doesn't realize her duties will consist of chaperoning a bus full of would-be rap stars from Harlem. Ride follows this collection of hip-hop misfits on a smelly, broken-down charter bus that they have to take to get to Miami for a video shoot in 24 hours. Naturally, there's bickering, breakdowns, impromptu jam sessions, and a lot of bonding. Leta finds an ally in Poppa (Malik Yoba), an old friend of the music producer who wants to start a program for youth in the inner city. Meanwhile, Poppa's younger brother has stolen a backpack full of money from a couple of thieves who are not happy about it and are tracking him down--but story isn't really the point in Ride. This is a movie about elaborate insults and verbal riffs, a nonstop flow of talk ranging from the bad-girl back and forth of a female rap duo to the crazed mixture of bragging and trash from the middle-aged bus drivers who cast an unfazed eye at these aspiring ghetto stars. Fleshed out with scatological humor, loony dream sequences, and a soundtrack featuring the Wu-Tang Clan, Onyx, and Naughty by Nature, Ride is slapdash but entertaining. Also featuring cameos from Snoop Doggy Dog, Dr. Dre, Downtown Julie Brown, Redman, and others. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars fresh.......2005-10-08

Movie that u want to watch till end and don't get bored. Black slang talk really makes u laugh. Would like that movie would be little longer when all things leave half way. Music rocks behind and makes u feel happy.

In this movie it was fun seeing a bunch of people driving to Miami to do a music video.

1 out of 5 stars GET OFF THE BUS.......2005-08-16

Ride is a road comedy that you don't want to take a trip to the video store for. Without a solid script or director this Ride turns into a bus wreck on film. The story is so full of plotholes you'll want to get off this bus before the first twenty minutes of the film.
An aspiring music director (Melissa De Sousa) desperate for a break makes a deal with her greasy boss (Downtown Julie Brown) to bus down a star's (Luther Campbell) talent to Florida for a music video. The group of "entertainers" is a bunch of standard road comedy misfits all rewritten to fit music stereotypes. The female singing duo, the sexy babe, the hard-core thug, the white rapper, and his bickering black partner, and the smooth operator crooner who's actually a misogynist. Sadly the actors are less talented than the one-dimensional characters they play. Keeping these no-talents in line during the trip is Pop (Malik Yoba in desperate need of a paycheck) Luke's best friend. Cedric the Entertainer and John Witherspoon are the drivers of the Jalop Charter bus they all get on for the "Ride." The beat up bus is actually in better shape than you will be in after you watch the movie. Make sure to have some alka seltzers or some Tums on hand before you pop this DVD in. You're going to need them soon after the ten-minute mark.
As they make the long journey from the ghetto of Harlem to Florida, we watch as several poorly written stories start to unfold. Because the characters are so one-dimensional, I didn't get to know anyone or how this experience changed them in any way. Instead of developing the characters, the screenplay uses very bad jokes to cover up its total lack of story. These gags are so bad I got motion sickness when they started the "Ride". I needed a couple of barf bags just to finish the movie. From stupid gags about the ethnicity of a white rapper, to a running gag about a two bumbling robbers (Lady of rage Guy in a down jacket while everyone else wore summer clothes) chasing down a thug for some bodega loot they stole, this movie just made me more nauseous on its long tedious journey to Florida. Laid back West coast cool Snoop Dogg as a southern hick? There's a ???moment if there ever was one. Hillbilly gags, gags about carjacking, all go nowhere. The most vomitrotious moment is when Pop asks Luther Campbell to fund a manhood program. What??? Luther Campbell playing, a hard core-misogynist, in this movie (not a stretch) is going to fund a manhood program to promote responsible behavior and good values among men. An MST3K moment if there ever was one.
You know a movie is bad when the actors' faces express frustration in the performances. Melissa De Sousa and Malik Yoba look like they are in pain for most of this movie. They struggle through the script looking for a bright spot to display their talents in but find none. Downtown Julie Brown looks so annoyed that she wants to choke someone. Cedric The Entertainer and John Witherspoon are just phoning it in here. Thankfully both have done better work in other movies(Boomerang, Hollywood Shuffle and Barbershop.) Ferdo Starr is his grating Q character from Moesha and Luther Campbell is well Luke.
Do yourself a favor and avoid this "Ride." Get on the next bus please.

3 out of 5 stars It was alright but nothin' special.......2004-03-30

I thought the movie would be really fun to watch I mean CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER & BERNIE MAC and on top of that FREDRO STARR & MALIK YOBA.
All the people I mention did great work, but the movie it self weren't that well-written and couldv'e been much better however it was a pretty funny movie.
I bought the European Version and missed out on the 4 musicvideos that are as a bonus in the american edition and that pissed me off a little.

The soundtrack is better than the movie, but the movie is still o.k. if u don't pay too much for it.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC.......2001-03-17

Though the movie was very predictable, the music was great! Some of the storyline was so stupid it actually made it funny. Again clearly the star was the music of DUNN PEARSON!!

2 out of 5 stars The most ridiculously stupid movie.......2000-11-05

A movie with a so called "righteous black man" and some students he takes to Florida the possibility of making in entertainment only in the end to buy into the sterotype of black entertainers.

In this comic twist on the cop buddy genre, suburban Philadelphia policeman Alex Kearney (Anthony Edwards) is unfairly reassigned to a dangerous, rundown inner-city precinct after busting a wealthy, well-connected businessman for speeding. Soon after, his partner is killed when he attempts to bust a drug transaction in the area, and Kearney seeks the aid of Dennis Curren (Forest Whitaker), a loner cop in the downtown precinct who's resistant to working with the naive suburban transfer. Despite their differences--notably Kearney's by-the-book approach and Curren's toss-the-book attitude to law enforcement--the duo begin investigating what at first seems to be an ordinary drug operation, but soon expands into something larger. The antagonistic chemistry between Whitaker and Edwards works to the film's advantage and lends itself to some poignant moments as the guarded Curren slowly opens up to his new, gung ho partner. Despite an unnecessarily Hollywoodish ending, Downtown is a charming buddy pic. --Bryan Reesman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A true modern classic..........2007-08-12

I always reccomend this movie to people looking for offbeat entertainment. Edwards and Whitaker play 2 cops thrust together in a tough precinct located 'Downtown', hence the name. Lots of comedic situations, but real violence-not for the squeamish.

4 out of 5 stars This is NOT a great film, but a good one.......2007-06-02

Anthony Edwards is banished to downtown Philly from the wealthyburbs on the word of a disgruntled wealthyburbite. He's as white as they come; the denizens of downtown are, uh, not.

Forest Whitaker is his unwilling/unwitting partner with passion but no tolerance. Beach Boys? NO!

It's a predictable but enjoyable romp, and Art Evans plays a streetwise police Lt with a penchant for using a 4-letter copulatory verb. Yeah, that's the one.

It's not vaguely believeable, but Edwards is so fresh and pre-ER-ish, it's a lot of fun. Plus, Whitaker brings a level of intensity not really suited to the movie, but characteristic of all his roles. Doesn't hurt he went on to anchor an ER story arc.

For the price, you can't beat it. Pop some corn and curl up for a while.

5 out of 5 stars Downtown.......2007-01-10

I had taped this movie from TV years ago and just wanted to have it for my own. I always liked Anthony Edwards from ER and think Forest Whitaker is a great actor. This was just an all around great movie.

4 out of 5 stars damm good movie.......2005-10-28

this is a very good movie i think its good for a white cop to hang down in the hood anthony edwards has guts the funny part was watching him eat chittlings and getting sick and the best part they became friends we need more movies like this made in todays society.

5 out of 5 stars LAUGHS, ACTION, and BEACH BOYS MUSIC, it's all here!!!.......2005-02-07

This is a fish out of water story (a reversed, Beverly Hills Cop, if you would) where a white cop from a shiny, modernized, police station, is transferred to a gritty, dilapidated, and crime ridded, gettoeque, police station, in one of the best 80's styled buddy films ever made.

There's plenty of laughs, action, and Beach Boys music, for everyone to enjoy.

Anthony Edwards (when he had hair) as the shiny new, eager to right the worlds wrongs cop, from the right side of the tracks, who plays, ever so gratingly, against Forest Whitaker, as the put upon, chip on his shoulder cop, from the wrong side of the tracks.

The fun in the movie is watching the bond between the two cops, grow, as each learns to appreciate the other, and become friends.

This movie is a classic, and WELL worth the price of admission.

"Great Britain released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 2.0), SYNOPSIS: Macumba sexual: Jesus Franco's surrealistic voodoo film stars Ajita Wilson as Princess Obongo, who lives in a strange castle on a sunny desert island. Through sexual rituals and seduction of vacationers, the princess seeks to spread her evil around the world. A rather bizarre, dreamlike film recalling Franco's Vampyros Lesbos, this one benefits from the powerfully erotic performance of Wilson, who died in 1987 amidst strong rumors that she was a transsexual. Story of O (Historia sexual de O): This is one of Franco's several movies inspired from and loosely based on Sade's Philosophy in the Boudoir - it is quite unlike some of Franco's better known kitsch sleaze flicks. Orgias Inconfesables De Emmanuelle (Emmanuelle Forever): Emmanuelle is recently reunited with her husband, but at the next party, she gets drunk and strips nude for his friends. Ciudad Baja (Downtown Heat): A rather glossy production, DOWNTOWN HEAT is a gritty and pretty interesting crime flick. Mike ""Touch"" Connors is featured as a special agent out to bust Eurocrime Lord Radeck (Craig Hill). Connors, who started his career in such Roger Corman B film entries as the WIP SWAMP WOMEN, is his usual hard edged self and gives everybody hell. Downtown - Die nackten Puppen der Unterwelt (Down Town): In Puerto Rico, a down-on-his-luck private detective is hired by a woman to take compromising photos of her husband, a notorioous nightclub owner. Of course, all four of these women are lesbians yet two of them don't think the other two are, they think they're prudes, and boy are they wrong, but when they find out they're all delighted with the opportunity to mix and match. 5 out of 5 stars Riveting fall from grace.......2006-05-04

Balthazar Getty gives an amazing performance as do Peter Weller, Rebecca Gayheart, and Peter Greene. Also look for Corin Nemec.

This film is a riveting ride with the devil, a fall from grace. There are no lost causes but one (but even that character stays true to his calling). The film is not for the squemish (I have to admit I could not look at some of the scenes). A real film for adults -- not for children or adolescents.

      5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-03-06

I saw this movie at 3 in the morning just flipping through the channels and wow i found an amazing movie this film is why i love those wierd independent films Getty does a great job but Peter Weller is amazing ...Watch this beautiful little masterpiece.... THE SOUNDTRACK IS AMAZING!

5 out of 5 stars " Do you feel the rush ".......2005-12-28

One of my personal favorite movies of all time something about the mysterious stuart chappel (Weller) taking michael halloway (Getty)to all those crazy places keeps you drawn to the screen Isac H Eaton is brilliant because he made such a sick and twisted movie A GENUIS MASTERPIECE I thought the movie was shot great and Rebbeca Gayheart plays the worried pregnant wife perfectly this movie might not get to everyone but if you really watch it youll realize it is just like i said before A GENUIS MASTERPIECE.. IF YOU LOVE :partying all night until light out , a good fight, special cigars, blow, playing russian roullete or you just cant sleep at night Shadow Hours is for you I give it 5 stars

      3 out of 5 stars I'll Take This "B" Movie Over A Coma Anyday.......2005-09-19

I've seen hundreds of Sci Fi/Horror movies over the years. This is one of those you'll wonder whether you've watched it or not a few years down the road. You just can't remember.

All in all, I figure it's still better to watch a so-so Sci Fi/Horror movie than "Dances With Wolves" or "Evita". This movie will end up being non-memorable, but it's preferable to being in a coma.

      3 out of 5 stars Nothing's shocking.......2003-12-04

Shadow Hours tells that story of Michael (Balthazar Getty), a recovering alcoholic who has a pregnant girlfriend at home (Rebecca Gayheart and an uncredited pillow under her shirt) and a dreary night job working in a gas station in L.A. In the opening scenes, the film actually does do quite a good job of capturing both the monotony and the underlying menace of working nights though eventually the continual montages of crazy homeless guys and rising gas costs grows almost as monotonous as Michael's life -- it's as if the director stumbled across something that worked once and then couldn't stop himself from repeating it over and over again.

Anyway, the film picks up once Peter Weller drives his porche into Michael's life. Weller plays a guy named Stuart who claims to be a writer and who, in one of those scenes that seems to take place exclusively in movies like this, quickly befriends Michael and takes Michael on a journey into the seedy underside of L.A. -- a world of perversion and temptation and nothing you haven't seen before in films ranging from Blue Velvet to Fight Club to the Matrix Trilogy to whatever happens to playing on Cinemax right now. Indeed, the main weakness of Shadow Hours is that in today's world, nothing's shocking and simply using a whole lot of neat little film school tricks isn't going to make the mundane any more interesting.

Natrually, Getty's character must chose between a life of stable, boring stability with Gayheart or the life of self-destruction offered by Weller. However, since the film makes both choices look positively dull, who really cares? Since the film never really bothers to give any build-up to Getty's plunge into decadence, it's pretty much impossible to judge just exactly what it is he's rebelling against beyond working in a gas station and living with a Noxzema spokesmodel with a pillow under her blouse. It doesn't help that Getty sleepwalks through his role.

However, I would recommend seeing this film for one reason and one reason only and that is the brilliantly bemused performance that Peter Weller gives as the film's perverse version of Virgil. Smirking like an aneroxic Jack Nicholson and never giving into the temptation to take any of his overbaked dialogue too seriously, Weller manages to breathe new life into a familiar character and he even manages to bring a few moments of genuine menace into an otherwise dreadfully silly film. Eventually, the film lets Weller and his character down but Weller never lets the audience down. It's rare that one actor alone can redeem an entire film but that is what Weller manages to do in Shadow Hours.

Shadow Hours is a film that was obviously designed to be a "cult classic" but ultimately it only serves to highlight the difference between a well-made, unconventional film that might take a while to find its audience and a flashy, derivative con job that tries to hide its lack of depth behind a whole lot of flashy camera moves and sub-Intro. to Philosophy-style monologues. However, if the film doesn't deserve a cult, Peter Weller's performance definitely does. Nothing's shocking except that such a silly film could contain such a rare piece of genius.
