Amazon.com

Not really a movie or documentary, The Secret is more of a video seminar, a presentation featuring a series of authors, philosophers, doctors, quantum physicists, entrepreneurs, and spiritual practitioners expounding on the powers of The Secret (probably the most well-known of the presenters is Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Success Principles). What is The Secret, exactly? "That principle can be summed up in three simple words: thoughts become things," proclaims writer Mike Dooley, author of Notes from the Universe. Put it another way, it's The Power of Positive Thinking and how it can be applied to attracting more money, better health, and relationships; in short, happiness. (There is a rundown of topics on the DVD Chapters menu).

Most of the material here is given in a straightforward manner, with the presenters simply talking into the camera to address the audience directly, which is good because it avoids the trap of pretense. On the other hand, the quick edits between presenters (would it hurt to let them say more than one sentence at a time?) don't help because it reduces many of their points to palatable sound bites and aphorisms. To many viewers, this may make the program come across as a series of nice ideas not rooted in reality. Plus it's somewhat spurious to claim that The Secret was well understood and practiced by specific individuals like Plato or Shakespeare (it's well known that some of the historical figures noted didn't exactly live happy or even prosperous lives, despite their achievements). But still, the primary message is one of positivity and hope for everyone. So what to make of it? In the end, programs like this generally find an audience that is open to the message, and many will probably find it to be a source of inspiration. Others will approach it with a good deal of skepticism or dismiss it as another way of marketing happiness the masses. It simply won't resonate with everyone, but if it resonates with you, you're likely to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. Those looking for more on The Secret might want to check out the companion book by Rhonda Byrne. --Daniel Vancini

The Secret (Extended Edition)
The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

Basically it breaks down like this "Like attracts Like". You attract to you what you put out type thing. This movie tries to explain how to use this on a conscious level for achieving what you want in your life instead of attracting what you don't. I love this movie, I love the idea behind this movie. I find it very empowering.

Yes, the movie does emphasize a bit on wealth and gain, however it also speaks of using it (the secret) in Health and Relationships, how it can apply to anything and anyone. I love that idea, maybe the people just need a little faith in something other than themselves. I think of this movie as a gift for the masses, just think it we could all get ourselves together long enough to do something on a deeper level. Also check out "The Power of the Subconscious Mind by John Murphy", it's been around since the 60's. Good luck and keep an open mind.

5 out of 5 stars A good first step........2007-09-14

I hope this movie inspires and uplifts all who watch it.

Few would deny that if you are born into a rich family, one which values financial success, and you are taught to succeed; then you will probably be successful. Being positive will come naturally to you. If on the other hand, you are born into a poor family, one which struggles to survive, and you are taught to struggle; then you will probably not be successful. Being negative will come naturally to you.

Of course, there are exceptions. There are those who succeed despite all obstacles of birth and circumstance. We read about them. We admire them. And it is to those many individuals desiring to be exceptions that "The Secret" aims. And there is no doubt in my mind that positive thinking is a requirement of success.

And there's nothing wrong with being successful. There was a comedian once who said, more or less, "I've been rich, and I've been poor, and believe you me rich is better." I think it was Joe E. Brown who said that, and I agree with him. While I have never been rich, I have been poor. And I did not like it. Making ends meet took all my time. I was too tired to meditate, too tired to read nourishing books, and too tired to spend time with those I loved. But I was not too tired to worry.

Nor is there anything wrong with being positive, setting intentions, and manifesting what you think you want. That is much better than being negative, not setting intentions, and manifesting what you think you do not want.

For those who struggle to send children to college, pay mortgages, and take care of aging parents; this will be an uplifting movie. Life can be hard, and people need hope. But I also imagine that most of those who love the message in "The Secret" know that there is more to life than living the "good" life. And I am sure the contributors to this DVD would agree.

As for me, the good that I seek beyond the "good" life is a state of inner stillness. And, as much as I value abundance and the teachings around it, I cannot manifest this inner state through positive thinking. It is through letting go of my thoughts that I enter into stillness.

We all know that the Buddha advocated the middle path. He neither distained nor desired the riches of this world. He saw that the poor struggled to get money, and the rich struggled to keep money. Therefore he talked about living in balance, first with oneself and then with ones neighbors. To me his words are as wise today as when he first spoke them. And perhaps the real secret is to set our intentions to live in harmony with each other.

Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."

4 out of 5 stars Much better than Season 2.......2007-09-16

I have watched Desperate Housewives from the beginning. I have to say that I was hooked from the first episode of the first season. However, in Season 2, I felt as though the series got too dark and almost too campy to be watched. However, this season, Season 3, returned to the camp without the creepy. Although there were a few misses, like the pedophile on the street - for the most part, Season 3 was a wonderful season filled with lots of twists and turns but still never veering into the completely inane. I enjoyed this set of DVDs and would recommend them to anyone looking to while away a few hours while watching a beautifully produced show.

4 out of 5 stars Good guilty pleasure TV.......2007-09-13

Part of the show's success came from the fact that a lot of people can relate to a lot of the women on Wisteria Lane. From the mother struggling to make ends meet with maybe a bit too many kids to the one obsessed with image and perfectness to the misunderstand promiscuous neighbour, it seems kind of strange that men can find as much to like as the women do. Sure it helps the women are attractive and the season has enough intrigue, drama and humor to keep you coming back whether you're a guy or a girl.

On Susan's story, Mike has been put into a coma after being run over by Orson, Bree's new man. Susan meets Ian in the hospital and finds herself drawn into him while waiting for Mike to wake up. As for Bree, Orson's former wife Alma is missing and blame is put on Orson with Bree skeptical about who Orson really is. The divorce between Carlos and Gabby is nearly finalized and the 2 come to blows and trying to find other relationships including Edie for the former and a mayoral candidate for the latter. Meanwhile, Lynette deals with the new woman in her life, namely Nora who had a child with Tom before he met Lynette and Tom tries to get his dream, a pizzeria, off the ground.

Despite the fact it wasn't a nicely-praised season, I barely watched season 2. I kind of lost interest in the show or started to watch others so I just never watched. Season 3 has been seen as a return-to-form and while it doesn't really match the first season's brilliance, it still is a great watch. From the plot twists to cliffhangers to the comedic moments (Susan's overreaction to possible wedding cakes for one) are just as good as the first year. The show only slows down when Bree leaves on vacation - which was to tie into Marcia Cross' pregnancy - and the show just doesn't really intrigue anymore. Sure other storylines come to the forefront but you feel something's missing.

One of the show's strength was always its writing which always managed to blend the more outrageous comedic elements with character drama (the big one being the episode "Bang") and have it all fit together. From the playful narration of Mary Alice to the fights characters have with each other, it never manages to feel soap opera-ish even though a huge chunk of it tends to take its plays from the soap opera playbook like dead people who aren't dead to affairs and secrets upon secrets. My one complaint is that at times this season's arc felt a little disconnected from the 4 as a group. The first season had the women's lives rocked by the suicide of one of their friends which united them in their search for what happened and why she did while this season tends to have their own storylines separate from everyone elses with a meeting now and then.

Extras are slightly disappointing. We get moment favorites and a look behind the scenes but nary a single commentary is disappointing but still, it's the show that matters and thankfully this is just as guilty pleasure as the show can do.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Season of the Best Show on Television!.......2007-09-12

***DON'T WORRY--SPOILER-FREE REVIEW***

When I first heard of Desperate Housewives, I wasn't interested. Coming off the heels of Sex and the City's series finale, I thought it was destined to be a cheesey, watered down "replacement" for HBO's iconic show. However, after seeing the very first episode, I realized I was wrong. Desperate Housewives is entirely in a class of its own, and distinguishes itself with its unique blend of dark comedy, mystery, and suspense. After the first episode, I was hooked, and have been ever since.

In my opinion, the first season of the show was perfect. Great story, characters, writing, and performances by everyone involved. While many viewers and critics found Season 2 bizarre and irrelevant, I feel it may have been overly-scrutinized and simply didn't live up to the hype that Season 1's overwhelming success had stirred. Yes, some of the sub-plots were uninteresting, and the main arching storyline involving the Applewhites wasn't as intriguing as Season 1's story, but it was still an incredibly fun season to watch.

While Season 2 took on a much darker tone (maybe too dark for the characters involved), Season 3 managed to find the perfect balance of comedy and suspense--a formula that made Season 1 so successful. In fact, Season 3 is probably the funniest season yet! By now, the characters are so well-defined, that the actors and writers have more freedom to take them to some very funny extremes, without having to explain everything along the way.

As funny as it is, Season 3 also weaves a great arching mystery and a number of juicy stories for every character throughout the season, consistently keeping viewers coming back to find out just what will happen next.

Highlight episodes of Season 3 include the season premier ("Listen to the Rain on the Roof"), the INCREDIBLE, FANTASTIC, AMAZING "Bang," "The Miracle Song," "I Remember That," "The Little Things You Do Together," "God, That's Good," "Into the Woods," "What Would We Do Without You?" and the shocking season finale, "Getting Married Today."

The DVDs set is great, but a few more extras like commentaries and maybe some past season promos would have been nice.

Overall, this was an excellent season for the residents of Wisteria Lane! I can't wait to see what Season 4 has in store for them!

4 out of 5 stars Rich and Dazzling : Almost Perfect.......2007-09-10

My Mom and I just finished watching a Marathon run of the entire DVD Set. We finished it in three days, which wasn't so bad really...

The Good:

1. Susan & Mike finally get married. This happens in the Season Finale. Through this season, Susan meets a British dude called Ian but thankfully he dumps her.

2. Bree gets married to Orson Hodge : Played by Kyle MacLachlan, this was my favorite new character this season. The role was very poorly written but the actor does a terrific job.

3. Andrew Van De Kamp comes home : The homeless gay son of Bree finally returns and becomes a series regular this season, though some elements here are a bit controversial (drug usage, gay prostitution, etc)

4. Edie and Carlos get together : A very unusual coupling, but it works. Edie attempts suicide in the season finale. You must watch!

5. Gabrielle Solis marries the Town Mayor : He only does it for the Latino vote, and Gabby finds this out only after she marries him. Oh woe.

The Bad:

1. Ridiculous Sub Plots
2. Teri Hatchers' over the top antics and dialogue
3. 45 year olds behaving like 15 year olds
4. Julie Meyer loses her virginity to Edie's nephew in the most boring and dull storyline ever
5. Bree's daughter gets pregnant and sent away - this wasn't very interesting
6. Lynette almost has an affair. Later, she gets lymphoma. Overall this wasn't a good year for her character.

All things considered, this season really came together. My favorite characters, namely Andrew Van De Kamp and Tom Scavo, all get a lot more screen time, and Felicity Huffman acts REALLY well this entire season.

If youre looking for a fictional fun soap-opera type series to lose yourself into, this is perfect. In fact, while watching it, I thought to myself that this is a worthy successor to Melrose Place in so many ways....

Four Stars.

5 out of 5 stars Wisteria Lane's superb drama.......2007-09-10

As many people have already noted, Season 2 was lacking in substance with the weak Applewhite storyline, although this is not a reason to give up on it. The show, in itself has so much potential for more storylines, secrets and drama. It has a great base plot, of the five housewives (Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross and Nicholette Sheridan). On top of this, Marc Cherry and his team of writers have built a superb twist of storylines that have devloped, or can and will be over the next few seasons.

Back to Season 3. I won't give the whole storyline away here, although the character of Orson Hodge plays the lead role in this season's secret. From the first few minutes of the first episode of this series, are suspicions are raised. Watch out for episodes 7 'Bang' where a supermarket hostage situation take's place, and episode 16 'My husband the Pig', where this season's main secret comes to an early climax.

Desperate Housewives is a comedy drama to be watched over and over again, its storylines captivating and intriguing, with a real sense of suspense. Season 3 is of equal value as Season 1, and provides a climatic ending, which will make you cry out for the 4th Season. Enjoy it, love it, get it!

"I bought a car. Turned out to be an alien robot. Who knew?" deadpans Sam Witwicky, hero and human heart of Michael Bay's rollicking robot-smackdown fest, Transformers. Witwicky (the sweetly nerdy Shia LaBeouf, channeling a young John Cusack) is the perfect counterpoint to the nearly nonstop exhilarating action. The plot is simple: an alien civil war (the Autobots vs. the evil Decepticons) has spilled onto Earth, and young Sam is caught in the fray by his newly purchased souped-up Camaro. Which has a mind--and identity, as a noble-warrior robot named Bumblebee--of its own. The effects, especially the mind-blowing transformations of the robots into their earthly forms and back again, are stellar.

Fans of the earlier film and TV series will be thrilled at this cutting-edge incarnation, but this version should please all fans of high-adrenaline action. Director Bay gleefully salts the movie with homages to pop-culture touchstones like Raiders of the Lost Ark, King Kong, and the early technothriller WarGames. The actors, though clearly all supporting those kickass robots, are uniformly on-target, including the dashing Josh Duhamel as a U.S. Army sergeant fighting an enemy he never anticipated; Jon Voight, as a tough yet sympathetic Secretary of Defense in over his head; and John Turturro, whose special agent manages to be confidently unctuous, even stripped to his undies. But the film belongs to Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, and the dastardly Megatron--and the wicked stunts they collide in all over the globe. Long live Transformers! --A.T. Hurley

4 out of 5 stars These Robots Knock Your Socks Off.......2007-09-16

I was hesitant to see this movie but the trailer really won me over because of the whole cheesy look to it. Man, was I proven wrong. I thought the movie was a lot of fun-- the nonstop action, the storyline, and the appearance of the coolest robots ever in existence.

The robots, the just Autobots and the power-hungry Decepticons, are given a brief prologue and summary of their ramshackle home planet and the war that's waging between the two sides, but we never actually see anything until the near end of the movie. The human characters also aren't very fleshed-out and there are some of the usual archetypes you find in an action flick: the hero who wants to return to his family because he has a child, the government official who doesn't know the entire truth behind what's going in, the nerd who still lives with his grandma, and the teenage boy who's pining for the pretty girl who doesn't even know he's alive. But since this is a Michael Bay flick and some of these archetypes are in his previous films (Armageddon, anyone?), I think Bay's fans wouldn't really care; Shia LeBeouf, however, gives a pretty decent performance as aforementioned teen who likes the hot chick. If more attention had been focused on the robots, who are the real stars of the show, it would have been a greater movie, but since I had so much fun watching it four times in the theater, I think all can be forgiven. That's what sequels are for anyway, right?

4 out of 5 stars Heads up on the TONS of hd/dvd features on the upcoming release........2007-09-15

As I said this is a heads up of the Hd/dvd features and not a review. I like to know this stuff, so I figure others do. This is the kind of movie that home theater enthusiasts want for sound and picture. This is the information I found on Movieweb, there seemed like a lot of features so I figured I'd pass it along. With the high price of hd perhaps this release might come close to the price they ask.

5 out of 5 stars So much better than I expected!!.......2007-09-15

I'm not a Michael Bay (the director) fan so I didn't expect much out of this film. It turned out great and I've seen it in the theater 5 times! I've only seen one other movie in the theater more than once, Dumb and Dumber, so that says a lot about this film. I grew up with the Transformers so I have just as many complaints as the next nerd. Still, this turned out fantastic!!

Like Sin City before it, 300 brings Frank Miller and Lynn Varley's graphic novel vividly to life. Gerard Butler (Beowulf and Grendel, The Phantom of the Opera) radiates pure power and charisma as Leonidas, the Grecian king who leads 300 of his fellow Spartans (including David Wenham of The Lord of the Rings, Michael Fassbender, and Andrew Pleavin) into a battle against the overwhelming force of Persian invaders. Their only hope is to neutralize the numerical advantage by confronting the Persians, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), at the narrow strait of Thermopylae.

More engaging than Troy, the tepid and somewhat similar epic of ancient Greece, 300 is also comparable to Sin City in that the actors were shot on green screen, then added to digitally created backgrounds. The effort pays off in a strikingly stylized look and huge, sweeping battle scenes. However, it's not as to-the-letter faithful to Miller's source material as Sin City was. The plot is the same, and many of the book's images are represented just about perfectly. But some extra material has been added, including new villains (who would be considered "bosses" if this were a video game, and it often feels like one) and a political subplot involving new characters and a significantly expanded role for the Queen of Sparta (Lena Headey). While this subplot by director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) and his fellow co-writers does break up the violence, most fans would probably dismiss it as filler if it didn't involve the sexy Headey. Other viewers, of course, will be turned off by the waves of spurting blood, flying body parts, and surging testosterone. (The six-pack abs are also relentless, and the movie has more and less nudity--more female, less male--than the graphic novel.) Still, as a representation of Miller's work and as an ancient-themed action flick with a modern edge, 300 delivers. --David Horiuchi

Description

The epic graphic novel by Frank Miller (Sin City) assaults the screen with the blood, thunder and awe of its ferocious visual style faithfully recreated in an intense blend of live-action and CGI animation. Retelling the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, it depicts the titanic clash in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his massive Persian army. Experience history at swordpoint. And moviemaking with a cutting edge.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it!.......2007-09-16

This is one of my favorite war movies ever created. This movie is a must see for all! It is very original and has great dialouge. I bought this with being very happy with what I purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-09-16

One of the best movies ever made. It's right up there with Gladiator and Braveheart. A must have in your DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny! Excellent!.......2007-09-16

The movie is incredible, one of the most remarkable epic movies of all times. It is Frank Miller's book in motion. Do not expect it to be a documentary about Thermopylae, remember it's Frank Miller we're talking about! The facts are twisted in order to bring the most spectacular story possible. If you like action and epic movies you will not be dissapointed!
Special features include: Additional Scenes, Frank Miller's vision realized on Film, 300 Spartans - Fact or Fiction?, Who were the Spartans (how the actors built their characters based on spartan customs), Webisodes (go on set with the cast and crew) and Commentary by Director Zack Snyder.

5 out of 5 stars Not as good as the hype........2007-09-16

The fight scenes are spectacular. BAR-NONE. Some of the rest was a little to drawn out for me. I know that was kind of the point, but it still was a little boring.

3 out of 5 stars Superb Action, But a Far Cry from the Graphic Novel.......2007-09-15

Long before this film came out, there was Frank Miller's superb graphic novel (still in print, by the way, and well worth the read), and I was a great fan of it. Thus, when I caught wind that a motion picture version was coming out, I was quite excited. Naturally, I expected the film to deviate (as so many comic book films do) from the original source material. While 300 keeps the tone (and the look, by golly!) of the graphic novel, it takes too many liberties with the source material to make it a reverent adaptation.

Taking place in 480 B.C., 300 tells the tale (as retold by Frank Miller) of the battle of Thermopylae, in which a small confederation of Greeks (including 300 Spartans) held off the army of the Persian emperor Xerxes for three days - the largest army of its time. In the end, the Spartans stayed behind at the site and were all slain. Miller's graphic adaptation was an artistic and narrative triumph, creating a great deal of care for the characters and setting the work in a golden, rocky version of the Greek countryside. Much of Miller's artistry is reproduced here - costumes, colors, even individual panel illustrations are featured with loving care and dazzle the eye. Additionally, the fight scenes are brilliant and rival any previously filmed. 300 seems to have been filmed in a manner similar to Sin City, and thus digital wizardry abounds, to good effect.

However, the film delights too much in violence and we find that we have no care whatsoever for the characters. Gerard Butler, who is the spitting image of Miller's rendition of the Spartan king Leonidas, while he cuts an impressive figure, cannot make the dialogue (much of it taken from the graphic novel) poignant and simply spits the lines out through bared teeth. Additionally, a tacked-on and pointless sub-plot with Leonidas' queen, Gorgo, goes nowhere and seems to have been added simply to pad out the time. Overall, a fine action film, but it falls far short of the grandeur of the graphic novel.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is a rollicking voyage in the same spirit of the two earlier Pirates films, yet far darker in spots (and nearly three hours to boot). The action, largely revolving around a pirate alliance against the ruthless East India Trading Company, doesn't disappoint, though the violence is probably too harsh for young children. Through it all, the plucky cast (Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush) are buffeted by battle, maelstroms, betrayal, treachery, a ferocious Caribbean weather goddess, and that gnarly voyage back from the world's end--but with their wit intact. As always, Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow tosses off great lines ; he chastises "a woman scorned, like which hell hath no fury than!" He insults an opponent with a string of epithets, ending in "yeasty codpiece."!

In the previous Dead Man's Chest, Sparrow was killed--sent to Davy Jones' Locker. In the opening scenes, the viewer sees that death has not been kind to Sparrow--but that's not to say he hasn't found endless ways to amuse himself, cavorting with dozens of hallucinated versions of himself on the deck of the Black Pearl. But Sparrow is needed in this world, so a daring rescue brings him back. Keith Richards' much ballyhooed appearance as Jack's dad is little more than a cameo, though he does play a wistful guitar. But the action, as always, is more than satisfying, held together by Depp, who, outsmarting the far-better-armed British yet again, causes a bewigged commander to muse: "Do you think he plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?" As far as fans are concerned, it matters not. --A.T. Hurley

Description

Just when he's needed most, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), that witty and wily charmer of a pirate, is trapped on a sea of sand in Davy Jones' Locker. In an increasingly shaky alliance, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) begin a desperate quest to find and rescue him. Captain Jack's the last of the nine Pirate Lords of the Brethren Court who must come together united in one last stand to preserve the freedom-loving pirates' way of life. From exotic Singapore, to World's End and beyond, from Shipwreck Island, to a titanic battle, this adventure's filled with over-the-edge action, irreverent humor and seafaring myth and magic. Everything has led to this twisting, turning, wild swashbuckling ride in this final chapter of the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy

5 out of 5 stars Pirates 3 = great movie!.......2007-09-11

I have to admit.....when the first Pirates came out I was one of those people saying it would be stupid and I would never watch it, but after some persuasion from my sister-in-law, thought I would give it a chance and you know what....I LOVED IT! I was hooked. I loved Dead Man's Chest and I could not wait until At World's End came out. It turned out to be just as adventurous and fun as the first 2! I am now PIRATES OBSESSED! And I loved that they kept the same characters through all 3 movies. I recommend this movie and the first 2 to everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Writer Commentary??.......2007-09-06

All I have to say is that I sure hope this DVD has feature-length writer commentary from Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio like the previous films did, as it truly turned out to be a MAJOR highlight with those DVDs. I've read that they have not yet recorded any commentary, but they give so much needed insight (needed especially for this film in particular) that their commentary is a MUST. It would be a bit of a disappointment without.

1 out of 5 stars This Is Why Pirates Suck.......2007-09-05

Pirates have always made a terrible theme for a movie. You don't see a lot of big hits based on them do you? I enjoyed the first installment of the trilogy. The second took a sharp dive in the wrong direction. Now, if you took someone who had never seen the movies and told them to watch part one and then watch part 3 right after that, they would be disgusted with how awful the acting has gotten and worse how dull and dry the dialog as well as the story-line had gotten. If you watch all 3 in order you would hardly notice this, take out part two and it becomes more evident that the creators were in a rush to finish a story and get their pay checks.

5 out of 5 stars Why many people hate this movie.......2007-09-04

I think that i know the reason that many people say that the 3rd pirates movie was horrible. I think that it is because people don't watch after the credits!!! After the credits in the 1st movie it shows the monkey grabbing a coin from the chest, and becoming immortal, after the second movie it shows the dog on a throne with a crown, and a big bone in his mouth plus all of the island people are worshipping him!! and of course after the 3rd movie it shows Elizabeth walking towards the beach with her nine or 10 year old daughter, and then it shows Will appearing on davy Jone's (sorry if i spelled that wrong!) ship, and meeting Elizabeth and his daughter. SO IT ISN'T A SAD ENDING LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE THOUGHT IT IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also if people couldn't follow the plot then maybe they should pay more attention!!!

1 out of 5 stars Pirates 3=Worst Movie of ALL TIME!.......2007-09-04

After being truly engrossed by the first two Pirates movies I was all set for the third movie but I could never have anticipated the letdown. I was stunned at the utter lack of a story in this truly awful movie. The Pirate Lords???? Hallucinatory Jack seeing multple Jack Sparrows??? Swann as Pirate King???? Keith Richards never looked so uncool and silly. What trash. Don't listen to the people who start their reviews of this movie with "I don't care what people say, I loved this movie" It's a lie. Nobody could love this movie and I was a HUGE fan of the first 2. I have never got up and walked out of a movie but I never came closer than this garbage. I couldn't wait for it to be over it was so stupid. Not only will I not buy this DVD to complete the trilogy, but At World's End was so horrid it actually lowered my opinion of the first two. Stay away and hope Depp & Co. actually try with the next one.

How does Spider-Man 3 follow on the heels of its predecessor, which was widely considered the best superhero movie ever? For starters, you pick up the loose threads from that movie, then add some key elements of the Spidey comic-book mythos (including fan-favorite villain Venom), the black costume, and the characters of Gwen Stacy and her police-captain father. In the beginning, things have never looked better for Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire): He's doing well in school; his alter ego, Spider-Man, is loved and respected around New York City. And his girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), has just taken a starring role in a Broadway musical. But nothing good can last for Spidey. Mary Jane's career quickly goes downhill; she's bothered by Peter's attractive new classmate, Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard); and the new Daily Bugle photographer, Eddie Brock (Topher Grace), is trying to steal his thunder. Enter a new villain, the Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), who can transform his body into various forms and shapes of sand and who may be connected to Peter's past in an unexpected way. There's also the son of an old villain, Harry Osborne (James Franco), who unmasked Spidey in the previous movie and still has revenge on his mind. And a new black costume seems to boost Spidey's powers, but transforms mild-mannered Peter into a mean and obnoxious boor (Maguire has some fun here).

If that sounds like a lot to pack into one 140-minute movie, it is. While director Sam Raimi keeps things flowing, assisted on the screenplay by his brother Ivan and Alvin Sargent, there's a little too much going on, and it's inevitable that one of the villains (there are three or four, depending on how you count) gets significantly short-changed. Still, the cast is excellent, the effects are fantastic, and the action is fast and furious. Even if Spider-Man 3 isn't the match of Spider-Man 2, it's a worthy addition to the megamillion-dollar franchise. --David Horiuchi

1 out of 5 stars A very poor follow up to the excellent Spider-Man 2.......2007-09-15

After the superb movie that was Spider-Man 2, I had high expectations for it's successor. I knew it had big shoes to fill, and I wondered how Sam Raimi would top Spider-Man 2.

Unfortunately, he didn't. He didn't even come close. Spider-Man 3 is without a doubt the worst of the three Spider-Man movies. It lost the heart and soul of it's predecessors. It's a horrible mix of rushed plot lines, under developed characters, and over the top stupid cheesiness [the dance sequences, those horrible reporters, and so much more].

Tobey Maguire does his best with a horrible script. But, his ludicrous dancing, ridiculous bad boy emo look, and constant crying, really water down his performance.
Kirsten Dunst delivers her worst performance yet. Her MJ is not at all endearing in any way. She pouts, whines, and complains thru the entire movie. Why does Peter love this girl?
James Franco fares much better, delivering a great performance as the tortured and vengeful Harry Osborn. He is the undisputed star of this movie.
Thomas Haden Church is wasted. The actor himself doesn't even appear on screen most of the time, as his character is usually a large CGI sand cloud or a giant sand monster. The character has virtually no personality, and because of that I failed to feel any kind of connection to the character. The Sandman connection to Uncle Ben was ridiculously contrived and utterly pointless.
Topher Grace is another wasted actor. Eddie Brock is reduced to a few brief appearances at random spots throughout the movie. There is no exploration of the character. No substance given to him. No development. His turn into a villain at the movie's climax is rushed, and brief. Venom is the most forgettable villain of the movie's villain trio, and of the whole Spider-Man movie trilogy.

It's not all entirely bad, though. J.K. Simmons delivers another great turn as Jonah Jameson. Bryce Dallas Howard is utterly sweet and charming as the kind Gwen Stacy, Peter's college friend. Lets hope she becomes the new love interest in future sequals.

4 out of 5 stars Great film, but............2007-09-13

Spider-Man 3 was a great comic book film no matter what you think. Spider-Man 2 is still the reigning king of comic book to film adaptations but you've gotta give cred to Raimi and crew for this third installment. The introduction of Venom was long awaited but one of the flaws with this movie was the fact that Sandman really didn't fit into the movie. Sandman, in my opinion, was there for the sympathetic factor and just to add another villain because Venom didn't come around until the end of the movie(total drag!). Venom should've been around a lot longer in the film. The emotion and human-touch was there but a few scenes were alittle questionable, such as the Peter Parker jazz dance among other things. The action was top notch and the effects were as great as ever. Danny Elfman's score, or I think Chris Young did this film, was also a great listen.Overall, It was satisfying. I'm a huge Spider-Man fan and the movies do more than justify the comics, they honor them. It's great to see great comic book heroes made into movies and you've gotta thank Spidey

1 out of 5 stars I became a chain smoker after this "MOVIE".......2007-09-09

ok so get this ,first off ima comic book fan so heading to the theatre i already have high hopes but low expectations 15 minutes into this atrocity i was pissed and as the movie progressed i slowly but surely found myself becoming more and more angry, i know people liked this one but try as i might i just dont get why, it was horribly put together too much singing too much dancing too much crying (wow this has quickly become a rant) every time i run into someone who says they liked it i cant get my brain to accept that i honestly think their messin w/ me and i follow them pointing out why i hated that tripe shortly after i have to have a smoke

3 out of 5 stars The sad facts.......2007-09-07

The sad facts: 1 too many villains, 2 Tobey Maguire's dark side was comical, 4 what happened to the magic from the second film? 5 The ending sucked so hard the devil wept, 6 came real close to Batman 4, the bad out way the good.

A classic 1967 Disney animated film that's loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, Jungle Book tells the story of a young boy Mowgli who was raised by animals in the jungle. When tiger Shere Khan threatens to return to their part of the jungle, the other animals decide that Mowgli must return to the man village in order to ensure his safety. Panther Bagheera has difficulty convincing Mowgli to follow him to the man village and recruits the help of a big lovable bear Baloo. Mowgli's journey is one of wit, song, and many surprises. A timeless film populated by strong characters bursting with personality, great music like "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You," and inspiring animation by Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and other master animators, Jungle Book captivates audiences of all ages.

This Platinum Edition includes everything from the standard bonus features like interactive games, music videos, and deleted songs to exciting and sometimes rare commentaries by everyone from modern day animators to Walt Disney himself, multiple featurettes about specific aspects of the film and its production, and a lengthy deleted scene featuring lost character Rocky the Rhino. Especially interesting for adults and Disney fans are "The Bare Necessities: The making of The Jungle Book" featurette, which explores Walt Disney's commitment to developing strong characters and his insistence that writers, animators, and song writers create a light version of Jungle Book that followed his own personal interpretation of the story, and the "The Lure of The Jungle Book" featurette, which discusses Frank Thomas' and Ollie Johnston's amazing contribution to the film as prolific animators and the inspiration and influence that their work provided for future animators including Brad Bird (The Incredibles), Andreas Deja (Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King), Sergio Pablos (Tarzan), Will Finn (Home on the Range), and Eric Goldberg (Fantasia 2000). The full length commentary by Bruce Reitherman (voice of Mowgli), animator Andreas Deja, and composer Richard Sherman with its interspersed archival commentary of Disney greats from the original creative team (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Woolie Reitherman, and others) is also very interesting and insightful. --Tami Horiuchi

Description

One of the most popular Disney films ever, THE JUNGLE BOOK is a song-filled celebration of friendship, fun, and adventure set in a lush and colorful world. Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's "Mowgli" stories, Disney's 19th animated masterpiece was the last animated feature that had Walt Disney's personal touch. The jubilant adventure begins when Mowgli, a little boy raised by wolves, is urged by his friend Bagheera, a wise old panther, to seek safety in the man village. Feeling very much at home in the jungle, Mowgli resists and runs off. Much to Bagheera's dismay, Mowgli meets a new friend with a happy-go-lucky philosophy of life -- Baloo the Bear, a lovable "jungle bum." Together, the three buddies find the journey back to civilization anything but civilized! They encounter a crazy orangutan, the hypnotic and sly snake Kaa, and the menacing Shere Khan! Fully restored for this 30th anniversary edition, this enduring classic swings with jazzy toe-tapping music, including the Academy Award(R)-nominated "The Bare Necessities," and the freewheeling "I Wan'na Be Like You"! A thrilling story for all ages, THE JUNGLE BOOK is an absolute necessity for your video collection.

With so many Disney DVDs to choose from, is "The Jungle Book," even a new "Platinum" version, really a must buy?

Absolutely. Just 64 minutes long, this unpretentious adventure is full of imaginative characters, charming song and dance routines, interesting themes and innocent good humor. Unlike many Disney films, "The Jungle Book" doesn't strive to be high art and has no groundbreaking special effects, but it's still one of the company's best animated films. And now the film has now been "digitally enhanced," with a brighter contrast and cleaner colors. I've seen some clips from this new release, and they really look good.

Telling the tale of Mowgli, a human boy brought up in the jungles of India, the movie is a freewheeling adaptation of some Victorian-era short stories by British writer Rudyard Kipling. Rescued as an infant by a protective panther named Bagheera, the boy is raised by wolves and adopted by a carefree bachelor bear, Baloo. Disney punches up the stories with Western jokes and music (the pop soundtrack includes Baloo's and orangutan King Louie's infectious scat duet "I Wanna Be Like You" and Baloo's perky prickly pear primer, "The Bear Necessities"), but wisely eliminates Kipling's patronizing overtones.

"The Jungle Book" teaches children a number of good life lessons. It demonstrates that the world includes enemies as well as friends, and that enemies sometimes disguise themselves as friends. It argues that though its fun to pretend you're someone you're not, it's best to accept the person you are. Finally, the film teaches young viewers two lessons about love. First, as Baloo learns when he realizes he must finally return Mowgli to the "man village," that true love is unselfish. And second, as Mowgli learns in the final scene, that the ultimate male fulfillment is romantic love -- or, as some cynics view the segment, the pursuit of a cute, wide-eyed flirt.

Parents can take note of a classic Disney touch: the acceptance of both religion and science. The film begins with the infant Mowgli lying in a basket along a riverbank, a reference to Moses that's not in the Kipling stories. Later, however, there's a nod to Darwin, as the orangutan King Louie greets the human boy with an outstretched hand, saying "Shake hands, cousin."

If nothing else, adults can enjoy identifying the distinctive character voices (Kaa is voiced by Sterling Holloway, already known as the "Alice in Wonderland" Cheshire Cat and soon to be famous as Winnie the Pooh), laughing at the chorus of Beatle-like vultures (one looks just like Ringo), or wonder just what a large, furry bear is doing in a tropical jungle in the first place.

If you're a fan of the story you may also want to check out Disney's live-action (and non-musical) version, 1994's Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Though it's a little violent for younger kids (one soldier is sucked under a pond of quicksand and dies a slow death), this PG film is not really scary and quite the exotic adventure. Its stars include Sam Neill and, in a bit part, John Cleese.

It cant get any better than this. Disney beloved animated classic "The Jungle Book" finally gets the long overdue Platinum treatment. This new 40th Anniversary release will include an all-new digital restoration of the film and for the very first time ever, this release will feature the movie in 1.75:1 widescreen aspect ratio (Please be aware that "Jungle Book" was filmed in 1.37:1 aspect ratio and was cropped for its theatrical screenings. The movie loses a little from top and bottom here in this restored version so think twice before selling off your old copies which featured the movie in its original fullscreen ratio). Along with a 5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix soundtrack, this edition includes a restored original theatrical soundtrack too. French and Spanish language tracks will also appear on the disc. According to dvdtimes, extras on this platinum edition will include:

3 out of 5 stars Death Proof....but where's Planet Terror too!.......2007-09-17

I'm a fan of Tarantino and Rodriguez, but what I have to agree with most of the mediocre reviews about this is what is up with releasing this seperately from the other film, that makes absolutely no sense, or does it? Maybe to rake in the money the studio didn't get on it's theatrical release? Death Proof has a film is brilliantly shot with style, but as some of the reviews had eluded to earlier gets bogged down in boring chick chit-chat about nothing. I literally found myself zoning off and thinking of other things during those scenes. I don't mind a lot of dialogue if you have something to say. These girls didn't, but the movie is saved by the ominous scenes with actor, Kurt Russell. Still a movie worth seeing, but maybe wait until it drops in price or is released with the other grindhouse film, "Planet Terror".

Kurt Russell is awesomely good, it seems like every time. When I saw Breakdown in 1996,
