Produced a year before Ron Howard's film of the doomed space mission hit Hollywood, To the Edge and Back brings the real faces of the Apollo 13 saga to the forefront. Astronauts Jim Lovell and Fred Haise talk about the flight (Jack Swigert died in 1982) while the technicians, including mission operations director Chris Kraft and flight director Gene Kranz, recall the moon shot and the near-fatal explosion. It's still hard to make the story fill an hour, so there's time to examine the space race in general and show previous missions. The "showing" part is the program's weakness. Ron Howard used no real footage in his film, which was smart since there really isn't a lot of interesting footage, just the usual launch and TV transmissions. Simple computer animations fill in the gaps, yet even the money shot--a still picture of the damaged spacecraft--is not shown. Still, this is a key document for those digging to see the "real" behind the story. It works as a wonderful "extra" to the Oscar-winning Hollywood film. --Doug Thomas
Description
"I could see a gaseous substance escaping... That's when it definitely occurred to me that we were in deep trouble... Very shortly, we'd be completely out of oxygen. These were the thoughts of James Lovell and the rest of the crew of Apollo 13 as they heard the ominous explosion that robbed them of most of their oxygen, food and water - 200,000 miles from Earth.
Apollo 13: To the Edge and Back tells the gripping, true story of the catastrophic flight of the Apollo 13 and the heroic struggle to bring the astronauts back alive. With first-hand accounts from the pilots, their families, and the people of mission control, it documents a thrilling struggle against time and all odds and serves as a reminder that, in the words of James Lovell, "We do not realize what we have on Earth until we leave it."
Special DVD features include: scene selections and closed captions.
On one DVD5 disc. Region coding: All regions. Audio: Dolby stereo. Screen format: 4 x 3 Full Screen.

MUCH better than the movie!!!.......2007-02-18
I saw this when it first showed on public television and was so incredibly moved by it. The footage and interviews are great. VERY WELL done! Then when I saw the Ron Howard movie I was SOOOO disappointed...the movie doesn't do the actual story justice. Buy this documentary and learn a valuable life-lesson: No matter how many things go wrong, keep trying and never give up hope!
The Real Apollo 13.......2007-01-10
A 90-minute documentary telling the story of Apollo 13 from the point of view of those who experienced it; with testimony from Jim & Marilyn Lovell, Gene Kranz and others with a first-hand role.
Concentrating on events as they happened, the film does as much justice as possible to the story within the time allotted: more detail in the causes of the explosion would have been welcome, but difficult to squeeze in.
Overall, well worth seeing.
As gripping as the mission itself..........2005-08-10
One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. If you're a space buff, and haven't seen this, get it. Told by the people who actually lived the experience, "Apollo 13: To The Edge And Back" is very well written and presented. Originally produced during the 25th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing, this documentary was an influence on Ron Howard during the production of his movie "Apollo 13". "To The Edge And Back" also covers a little of the history of the U.S. space program and the causes and motivations for going to the moon. The technical aspects are clearly explained in terms the layman can easily understand. If you could only have one Apollo 13 documentary, let it be this one.
Superb documentary.......2005-07-01
Though I love the movie Apollo 13 to death, I have to express an appreciation for this documentary, which covers the mission gone awry without the overdramatization that occurs in spots in the movie and manages to be almost as thrilling. This is in fact a great companion piece to the film, to get a notion of both what they got right (a surprising amount) and what they got wrong. Any space geek should have both in their library.
Far better than the movie.......2005-03-30
Nothing in the tamer "Apollo 13" movie lives up to the extraordinary tension and power of this documentary. Many things not covered in the thatrical film are here, so much so that my wife and I kept looking at each other with open mouths, wondering, "How much ELSE could go wrong?!?" It was while watching this presentation that we realized how truly heroic and ingenious the NASA folk were. We were limp from excitement after watching, "To the Edge and Back".

MARTHA
IN A YEAR WITH 13 MOONS
He has been called everything from a petty tyrant to the last great filmmaker of the 20th century. In little more than ten years, Rainer Werner Fassbinder created an amazing legacy of forty-three films. Before his death at the age of 37, Fassbinder had destroyed boundaries, redefined genres, and changed the course of German cinema. Fantoma is very proud to present this special 2-DVD set featuring two of his finest films.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent starting place.......2006-07-26
This set would probably be the best introduction to Fassbinder's films that you can find. 'Martha' represents the quintessential Fassbinder melodrama.. Margret Carstensen's desperate performance as a tortured wife is unforgettable.. 'In a Year with 13 Moons' is among the director's best works - it is a transitional film in his catalog it brings together the experimentation of his early years with the scope of his later hollywood-like (tongue in cheek hollywood) films..
This would be my choice for an affordable introduction to Fassbinder.
Fassbinder: the master.......2006-07-20
Granted I haven't seen the dvd, or the features (these films have been released seperately for a while though), I can easily say these are some of Fassbinder's masterworks.
Both are haunting, touching, and unflinching in that sense.
Fassbinder was a true master, and these films accentuate that.
In A Year With 13 Moons is a little odd as a film, but what film of Fassbinder's isn't? But Martha is definitely something else and well worth seeing (more so than 13 Moons at least).
Regardless, if the picture quality lives up to the quality of the films, this shouldn't be a set a fan of Fassbinder (or world cinema in general) should miss.

Maybe too deep..........2006-03-20
...for the average movie fan. I loved this masterpiece. It was forceful and subtle at the same time. From the priest's role in helping everyone to Bananas slowly becoming more...AND less of a clown through the different stages of his "makeup". Not an easy film to watch...but harder to stop watching ...again and again.
I wanted to love this!.......2005-03-31
I love Steve Buscemi. I want to absolutely marry Peter Dinklage tomorrow (but he is a bit of an ass in this movie). The two main women are awesome. Jennifer Beals is good too.
Every character is great. Apart from the nutso. He made me more uncomfortable than what was intended. Quite nasty.
But the story is wholly depressing! I wanted my time back from that movie. It wasn't the sort of queasiness that gets in your head and makes you think. It was just dismal nausea. I was just left ill at ease. But it was gone by morning.
But I am still utterly in love with Peter Dinklage.
Holy depressing!.......2004-11-06
I couldn't even finish watching this film. I wanted to slit my wrists. This film gave me a sick feeling inside.
I don't understand why most Indie flicks have to be terribly composed. Just cause the film was made for cheap doesn't mean it has to look cheap. Here's a tip to all indie flick directors: Hand held camerawork does not create a sense of reality. For me it just takes away from the realism. A shakey camera only reminds people that there's a camera there and that they're watching a movie. The hand held thing only works successfully if performed by people who have mastered hand held camerawork. Stop trying to pass off inexperience as art. People don't fall for it anymore.
I was looking so forward to seeing this film. This is just sloppy film making. I'm sorry but I guess I can't just look past all that. It has to be a really incredible story for me to sit through something like this. Unfortunetly the story here is incredibly depressing and not portrayed well by it's players. I don't think any of the actors in this film really know how to properly portray these types of characters. Characters in a story like this should never be portrayed by actors. They're too real to be portrayed by actors. I'm sorry but all I saw was famous supporting actors acting. It was sad affair and an insult to people who have real problems simular to the characters in this film.
This film would have been better off not being made at all.
Can't be this bad.......2004-08-02
Rented this movie just by cover value and was very disappointed. This movie is one of those artistic low budget movies that you find once in a while if you avoid disappointments. While some thinking-movies give you a new perspective in seeing the world, "13 Moon" does nothing new.
"13 Moon" has bunches of minor characters' plots coming together to form a simple plot of saving a child. These many different characters cross each other paths throughout the movie without knowing any significations of the other characters' goals.
A stripper helps a priest. The priest helps a singer. The singer is pregnant by a music producer. The music producer calls up a jail-bailer. The jail bailer knows a clown. The clown loves a stripper. These characters are more or less all linked together in what seem to be a small world. Each character has their own problem and agendas, but seems to gravitate together toward helping a dying boy. This movie is slow and boring, I like artist movies, but this one is really cheap. A movie similar and better then this one is "Snatch." Which has four or so plots throughout the movie that combine together in a grand finale? 21 grams in a sense is very similar and has more believable character that "13 Moons", with a bunch of no name pain actors, can't deliver.
13 moons is awesome........2004-07-12
just by looking at the cover of the movie & it being Steve Buscemi u know its going to a good movie. i had no idea what this movie was about when i first saw it. its about a father & how he never knew his son needed a kidney transplant and that night he gets a page from the hosp saying the have found a donor & before he gets to the hosp, the donor who is an insane drug addic escapes & with he help of some strangers he just meets. they look for the man to save his son's life. its just really good. it has few funny parts. this movie is very unique. i love how they play the piano music during the movie. i love this movie

The Shooting, perhaps the most famous Western hardly anybody ever saw, takes deadpan survey of the fallout from a casual atrocity, or perhaps only a ludicrous accident, in a nameless town. We never see the atrocity/accident, or even the town. Word simply reaches a prospector's camp, a wood-and-canvas pimple on the blankness of the wasteland, that someone "rode down a man and a little person... maybe a child." Was the someone Willett Gashade's brother Coin, who has gone missing? Was it Leland Drum, Coin's companion, who gets shot from ambush at his fireside--perhaps by an unknown avenger, perhaps by Coin? The death of Drum explains the film's title, but there's a long list of things we never know in The Shooting, and most (all?) of the characters in the movie never know them either. Still, the small, relentlessly enigmatic cast of characters gets into motion and keeps moving--chasing something, running from something, headed for somewhere that may turn out to be nowhere, or deep inside themselves.
Monte Hellman made The Shooting (and a second movie, Ride in the Whirlwind) during one brief trip into the desert, anonymously financed by Roger Corman, in the summer of 1966. His material was a script by Adrien Joyce (later of Five Easy Pieces fame), the patient camera of Gregory Sandor, and the faces, voices, and brazenly modern presences of Warren Oates (Gashade), Jack Nicholson (a white-collar killer), and Millie Perkins (a pinched Medusa, freckled with trail dirt, bitchy light years from Anne Frank). Over the intervening decades the Beckettian movie has been sporadically available only on late-night TV or via scrappy 16-millimeter prints at film societies. That now triumphantly changes with this crisp, color-saturated DVD release, whose modest letterboxing eloquently enhances the unsettling power of Hellman's compositions and eerie long takes. --Richard T. What are these people talking about!?.......2006-01-14
This film has been discussed by fans with an almost hushed reverance. They claim it to be so enigmatic, so thought provoking, so compelling, so unpredictable, and on and on, but I'm here to tell you now that this is pure garbage.
I typically don't recap plots in my reviews, but let me summarize this one's for you, since fans seem to think it's hard to put into words what really went on in this film...
Warren Oates is a miner, away for some reason, who returns to camp to find that his brother, Coin, who was mining with him and two other men, ran afoul of the law during his absence, and had to flee the area. Only one of the two remaining men, Will Hutchins, is left alive, as the third man was shot from afar just after Coin fled, apparently having been mistaken for Coin. A mysterious woman, Millie Perkins, arrives on the scene and hires the two men to guide her to some distant town. During the trek, they find out they are actually trailing someone, and are joined in the hunt by hired gun, Jack Nicholson. Oates and Hutchins begin to feel uneasy about being on a man's trail, Nicholson intimidates them (we later learn that he was the one who fired on their mining camp), and Perkins is a real bitch, but they find themselves basically trapped. Ultimately, they discover the man they are trailing is Coin.
This is basically a long Twilight Zone episode, and one that's lame and poorly done. Fans have claimed this to be unpredictable. Come on now- how hard is it to see that it's Oates' own brother he is helping to hunt down!?
I haven't seen "Two Lane Blacktop" or "Ride the Whirlwind", but I did see and love "Cockfighter", so I know that Monte Hellman does have some talent, but based off "The Shooting" alone, I would of had this guy pegged as a hack. It looks like the kind of thing a film student would make- something with a faux artiness and "big" twist at the end, but ultimately empty, even laughable...
There are a few unanswered questions, and maybe fans are getting duped by those into thinking this is something more than it is. That's yet another hallmark of poor, student filmmaking- throw in some confusing items that never get explained, so people think there's a deeper meaning.
****This part added several days later*****
Admittedly, there is something compelling to this film, and it did stick with me for some time (Was it anger at my disappointment? Hard to say what it was, but I did think about it frequently in the days following.). Maybe it was the acting talent that drove the film and left an impression (Although Will Hutchins was terrible and overacted so badly, he looked like he stepped out of a Gabbie Hayes era western.). But I do admit, something left an impression. I can't entirely say what that impression was at this point, so maybe the director did succeed in some regard. I have since seen "Two Lane Blacktop" and understand him better, but I'm still not relenting on my claim that "The Shooting" is ultimately a poor movie. I tried to bump it up to two stars for what it's worth, but amazon is only letting me edit the text portion of this review..
Duel In The Dust.......2003-07-30
THE SHOOTING (1966): Willet Gashade (Warren Oates) and his dimwitted friend Coley (Will Hutchins) are in a state of growing paranoia after their partner is inexplicably shot to death by an unseen assassin at their small mining camp. The murder may have been in retaliation for the accidental trampling death of "a little person" in town, ostensibly by Gashade's brother, who had left camp in a great hurry immediately prior to the shooting. The next morning, while the two remain confused and suspicious over this disturbing mystery, a strange young woman (Millie Perkins) shoots her horse to death outside of the camp and then offers Gashade a thousand dollars to lead her to a place called Kingsley. He accepts even though he makes no attempt to hide his distrust. Intrigued by The Woman, Coley offers to tag along. On their journey, the trio are tracked at a distance by a black clad stranger, Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson). Meanwhile, The Woman laughingly toys with Coley's emotions and refuses to answer any of Gashade's questions. Spear eventually joins them and proves to be a most despicable companion. Hostile and abusive in the extreme, Spear is a gunslinger cohort of The Woman, who is herself quickly revealed to be every bit as wicked as Gashade had suspected from the beginning. Eventually, the strange journey ends in bloody disarray at the foot of a rock-strewn mountain, where Gashade comes face to face with the answer to the mystery, at great cost.
One of the most celebrated of all cult movies, and deservedly so, THE SHOOTING is a truly great example of the once vital western form, a triumphant dying gasp for the genre. This compelling tale of weird vengeance is directed with icy cold brilliance by Monte Hellman. The perennially underrated Hellman works wonders on a lowbudget, with stunning cinematography (by Gregory Sandor) provoking a strong aura of the mysterious and uncanny even in the most realistically detailed scenes.
A small but terrific cast helps brings the occasionally mystical narrative to life. Warren Oates plays the world weary and wise Grashade with his usual gritty style, making him a suitable anti-hero for this dark tale. He's an excellent foe to Jack Nicholson's irredeemably evil Billy Spear, one of the most repulsively mean of all movie villains. As bad as he is, Nicholson is ultimately simply a well armed servant at the beck and call of The Woman, who is beautifully played by Millie Perkins for maximum hissability. Both Spear and The Woman engineer the destruction of Oates' foolish sidekick Coley, whose decency earns him an undeserved fate; Will Hutchins' charmingly sweet performance provides the film with its only moments of gentleness.
Richly ambiguous and by turns realistic and dreamlike, THE SHOOTING is a sporadically baffling but undeniably heady ride into the desert. The creepy ending makes this one of those rare movies that will compel you to immediately rewatch the whole thing from beginning to end, if only so you can try to satisfy your curiosity about what it just might REALLY be all about. Its THAT great of a movie.
The VCI DVD presents THE SHOOTING in a fine, modestly letterboxed transfer that captures the film in all its eerie widescreen glory. Since the film never received a theatrical release and has been shown only rarely on television, this is the first time most people will have ever had the chance to see this film in its intended aspect ratio. The only extra is a terrific and highly informative audio commentary from Hellman and Perkins, who vividly recall with candor and humor the filming of this ultra-cheap, high-class production.
Doesn't make a lot of sense, but interesting.......2003-01-29
Not sure what to make of this film. It doesn't make a lot of sense.
Summary:
While Willett Gashade (Warren Oates) was gone for supplies for his mining operation (very small mining operation of only a couple of people in the middle of the desert) his brother and one of their friends got into some trouble in town. They both return to the camp but Willet's brother flees the camp and the friend is gunned down in the middle camp. Another friend, Coley Boyard (Will Hutchins), sees what happens, but it upsets him so much that he hides in the mine with his gun. When Willet finally returns he has to talk Coley out of the cave. Not long after he does, a woman (Millie Perkins), whose name we never find out, appears and hires Willet to guide her across the desert to a city. Willet agrees to go but only if Coley can come.
So they set out, with Coley as something of an errand boy and Willet as the rough and tumble tracker. What Willet and Coley don't realize is that the woman has already hired a gunmen that is riding behind them and trying to stay out of sight to kill the person they are tracking. Though they were told they were just helping the woman across the desert, they are actually tracking someone, and the woman wants that someone dead.
When Coley accidentally sends the wrong signal to the hired gun, Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson), Billy appears at their camp then joins the entourage. As they finally catch up to the person they are 'hunting', Billy kills Coley for trying to warn Willet that Billy is likely just going to kill them all in the end. When Billy passes out from the heat, Willet beats him up then crushes his gun hand with a rock, preventing him from being able to accomplish his mission.
While Willet and Billy are fighting, the woman chases the prey up a mountain side. Once Willet finishes with Billy he enters the chase and reaches the woman in time to ?
Sorry about the question mark there. The truth is, you aren't exactly sure what happens. You hear gun shots and it seems like the prey (whom I believe is Willet's brother), the woman, and Willet all die. But you can't be sure. The only person that looks to be alive when the movie ends is Billy.
My Comments:
I must admit, even though nothing is ever really happening, that the set up of the movie is good enough to make you want to keep watching it. You don't ever really know what is going on and you never actually find out, either. But, because we are human, we want to try to figure it out. So, we keep watching, hoping to pick up on some detail that will help the movie make sense. None are forthcoming.
The soundtrack reminds me of the original The Planet of the Apes, where the music just doesn't seem to fit the action, and there are long periods of time when you would think there should be music, but there isn't any. I guess, if the intent of the director was to give the impression that this story was taking place over an indeterminate period of time, he accomplished his goal. To the viewer, the movie seems to go on forever and it feels like they spend months out in the desert.
Overall, the movie kept my interest most of the time just because I wanted to figure out what was going on. It never made much sense, which I guess is okay. I definitely don't think this movie is for everyone. I didn't think it was too bad, but I didn't really love it either.
SEE THIS WITH "RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND".......2002-01-03
In the spring of 1965, Roger Corman, the king of profitable, low budget movies, helped produce (without credit) two amazing films that have achieved legendary cult status. Now, thanks to VCI Home Video, Monte Hellman's "THE SHOOTING" and "RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND" are available on DVD in pristine, widescreen transfers. The films are subtly interconected.
Both films star a then unknown Jack Nicholson and super starlet Millie Perkins and were shot simultaneously on location in Utah for the modest amount of $150,000. Nicholson also wrote and co-produced "Ride in the Whirlwind" which is a straightforward tale of the making of a bad man and features sharp performances from Cameron Mitchell, the great Harry Dean Stanton, Rupert Crosse and Katherine Squire among others.
After accidentally happening on a group of outlaws, and getting caught in the crossfire by a sheriff and his posse, Wes (Jack Nicholson) is mistaken for one of the gang and escapes. But, in order to defend himself during his flight, has to start killing. By the end of the film he has become a legendary and mythic figure. Quentin Tarantino, a big fan of Hellman, has called this "one of the greatest films ever made."
In the "The Shooting," former bounty hunter turned miner Gashade (Warren Oates) returns to his diggings to find one of his partners, Leland, dead, his brother Coigne gone, and his third partner, Coley (Will Hutchins) holed-up in a nearby cave. Soon, a mysterious woman (Millie Perkins) materializes out of nowhere and offers Gashade a huge sum of money to guide her on a journey he soon realizes is a manhunt.
The quirky screenplay is by Adrien Joyce, the odd pen-name of the brilliant screenwriter Carole Eastman who wrote the acclaimed "Five Easy Pieces" which also stars Nicholson.
What "The Shooting" is actually about is anybody's guess. It has been called an existential western, or anti western. The super low-budget enforced a minimalist, almost surrealistic style that is terrific and timeless. The stark outdoor locations add immensely to the mood and of this this strange, enigmatic story that seems to reflect mid 60's paranoia and disillusionment.
Since their initial release, both films, though seldom seen, have become critical favorites, and have attained cult film status here and in Europe. Both discs include an entertaining and revealing commentary by director Monte Hellman and actor Millie Perkins with additional informed commentary by American Cinematheque programmer Dennis Bartok.

So misunderstood!.......2001-12-01
It seems like too many people don't understand the simple fact that this movie is not about the plot! It's not supposed to make sense! The entire movie is one giant nonsensical joke. It's kind of like Andy Kaufman and the fact that everything he did was all a part of an hilarious prank pulled on millions of people. This movie is a joke, and we--the viewers--are the punchline. It is meant to be like that. But then again, I guess if it weren't for people who hate the movie, it wouldn't be funny to people like myself.
For anyone who understands John Landis, this is a must-have!
Revolting, Goofy, stupid, rediculous. I LOVED IT!.......2001-07-21
With a cast like this, you can only expect a flop. Yet these reviewers who dumped on this flick musta watched something else, 'cause this movie, although not innovative, was an enjoyable romp into the outer-limits of these talented actors' range. If you didn't like this movie, then go watch the Talented Mr. Ripley, then come back. Compared to that movie, you can enjoy anything...
AMAZING CAST, okay plot (a few holes).......2001-01-21
The other reviewers do make a few good points. I'll admit, this not an amazing film, but I certainly enjoyed it. Watch it once and its kind of difficult to grasp. Watch it again, and everything comes together. A third time, and the film is just as good. A good cast brings comedy (not amazing, but worthwhile) to the film. All of the actors are well-cast and play their parts well, making a slightly shaky plot a lot more believable. This movie is not torture at all (as other reviewers said), and it is perfect for rainy days. I definentaly reccomend it.
Save your money.......2000-07-02
This movies is SO BAD, my true rating would be 5 black holes. It looks like it ought to be good--John Landis, the actors, but trust me, this would have to get way better to become merely BAD. Think three stooges, with PMS and guns. I got this because I am an Adrian Paul fan; I know some film work is better than none, but if you too are a fan, save your money and watch some old Highlander episodes. This actually hurt to watch.
No (Comforting) Words for the Dying.......2000-06-15
It is both a travesty and an insult not only to the viewers of this comedy (and I use the term "comedy" loosely)but to the large ensemble of gifted actors in this ill-fated project !
It is a plot that has been so overused and better executed in past comedy movies dealing with the same subject matter; The wife or husband who wants to gain the significant other's inheritance by having them "nixed" (usually by hiring someone to do the dirty deed).Though, such a subject matter has been used for thriller films as well. Even the bumbling duo who botch up the job in the beginning of this clunker are typical characters found in other movies. The tricks and charades are very much cliche here!
The most appalling thing is the enormous ensemble of some of today's best actors used to carry out this lethargic and boring flick. It is lethargic in the sense that the humor and jokes were lacking in both content and quality (I know this statement is subjective, but see for yourselves and decide) with regards to the writing !
When a movie contains Natassja Kinski, Lara Flynn Boyle, Billy Zane, Michael Biehn, Adrian Paul, Dan Aykroyd, etc., etc., you expect top performances; You do get them in this comedy ! However, the material given to them is not something I (if I were an actor) would want to have added to my list of credited film roles.
Wait until some viewers sit through ending. Can you say MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT...

Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy (The Marriage of Maria Braun / Veronika Voss / Lola) - Criterion Collection
ASIN: B0001A79DK
Release Date: 2004-04-13 |
Amazon.com
In 1974, Rainer Werner Fassbinder made Fox and His Friends, inspired by his relationship with working-class butcher Armin Meier. When Fassbinder dumped his longtime lover in 1978, the distraught Meier committed suicide, and Fassbinder fell into a deep depression. Whether driven by guilt or helplessness, the director drew from the experience for another film, the story of transsexual Elvira Weishaupt (Volker Spengler in a haunting performance). Elvira, formerly Erwin, is a working-class butcher who changed her sex for a lover who promptly left her. She now spends her days wandering the alienating industrial Frankfurt cityscape while reminiscing about her painful past. Coming after the lush, soft-focus beauty of the international hit The Marriage of Maria Braun, the bleak landscape of Frankfurt and Elvira's harsh, stylized flashbacks are almost shocking. The faint of heart should be warned of a gruesome slaughterhouse scene where cattle are killed and butchered--a display of cruelty that echoes the emotional brutality of Elvira's past. It's one of Fassbinder's most personal projects (in addition to writing and directing he serves as cinematographer, editor, and set designer), a strikingly stylized film and one of his most emotionally wrenching works. Meier may have inspired Elvira, but Fassbinder invests himself into the character, and his identification creates a powerful, painful portrait drenched in despair. --Sean Axmaker
Description
When the object of his affection off-handedly commented, "too bad you're not a girl", Erwin disappeared to Casablanca and returned as Elvira. Now, adrift and alone amid the maze of the Frankfurt streets, Elvira revisits the people and places of his past, desperately searching for the identity and love and she's never known.
Rainer Werner Fassbinder's masterpiece defies categorization, equal parts melodrama, dark comedy, tragedy, and almost clinical character study. Featuring a breathtaking central performance by the great Volker Spengler, In a Year with 13 Moons is ultimately a tender and moving portrait of a lost and fragile soul. Begun only weeks after the suicide of his lover, Fassbinder wrote, directed, photographed and edited what is perhaps his most personal and powerful film.
Customer Reviews:
everything is great, but the price!.......2007-05-07
a great movie, but little bit expensive.....
after i brought it, i found that i could buy it in my city with half of the price.....regret!
Brutal, honest, excellent.......2007-02-07
The movie should have been called "Despair" had Fassbinder himself not made the film with that title just before "In einem Jahr mit 13 Monden" (1978) which was very personal for the writer/director who had to come to terms with his lover's suicide. This drama follows the last few days in the life of Elvira - Erwin Weisshaupt. Several years back, Ervin underwent the sex change operation in hopes to win love of the man he loved. It did not help him to make Anton love him and it did not make him happier. It may sound beautiful, "I'll do anything for love, I'll be anything you want me to be" but by trying to be someone else, a person simply loses his/her own identity, becomes lonely and desperate and has no way out.
The movie is the most touching, moving, powerful and devastating Fassbinder ever made - it is impossibly difficult to watch at times but it does not make it a bad movie. The acting is fantastic by everyone; the directing is tight and Fassbinder is always in control taking movie from its melodramatic roots to the heights of pure tragedy, never been over-sentimental and even providing some humor. The choice of music with the references to "Death in Venice" (eternal and never fulfilled longing) and to Fellini's "Amarcord" (looking back at one's life trying to find the roots in the childhood, to understand how and why the things happened the way they did) makes the film even more compelling.
Warning: there is a scene in the slaughterhouse which is almost unbearable to watch. It is the very important scene but be prepared for it. It does not spare any details of the job done and in its emotional impact is as horrifying as "Les Yeux sans visage" ("The Blood of the Beasts" (1949), the short documentary by Georges Franju.
A bleak and crude vision of the multiple facets of love! .......2006-03-14
Just only a very few filmmakers in cinema ' s story have had the supreme virtue of treat th human being with such load of affection, respect and indulgency no matter the circumstances of religious, social, racial or psychological orders we talk.
Fassbinder literally embraced and loved the human being, and he dared to present many unsaid realities of universal repercussions. This awful and penetrating movie deals around a sex change of a man who tries to please his male lover, and then to be abandoned and deal with this stigma against the world.
An awful and incisive film which demands all your possible attention. It is not an easy going picture which anticipated itself by far to many actual issues.
What no one seems to be mentioning is the humor.......2006-02-16
Yes this film is full of hard-to-watch scenes like the slaughterhouse sequence, but what has not been mentioned is the wit and humor of the piece. Beginning with the openning scene in which a bunch of hustlers beat up the heroine because she is not a gay man, Fassbinder pulls a series of reversals and twists on what is expected. There are also amusing visual incongruities such as Elvira and Zora in their full femme outfits visiting slaughterhouses and convents.
The strong emotional impact of this film cannot be separated from Fassbinder's usual humor, which puts the character's pain into a larger perspective.
Fassbinder's Dark Masterpiece.......2005-01-07
This film is a masterpiece because of the way it challenges viewers: it refuses to be mere escapist entertainment as so many movies are. It bleakly confronts the way the legacy of the holocaust in Germany and the alienation of modern capitalism have turned people into soulless machines: love is impossible, a real life of honest emotion becomes unlivable. The main character, Elvira Weishaupt, is a lonely, forgotten soul who is kicked around and ignored by the rest of the world; what gives her life meaning is that she once loved someone passionately enough to change her entire life and identity for him, which, nonetheless, did not make any difference at all. Fassbinder mourns, in this film, the violent mysterious deaths of two previous lovers, El Hedi Ben Salem and Armin Meier; he bears witness to the crushing collapse of the utopian dreams of free love and personal liberation that marked the 1960's. This is one of Fassbinder's most intellectual films (Schopenhauer, Kafka and Sartre are all explicitly referenced) but it's also one of his most human and heartfelt, using great music (Mahler, Roxy Music, Connie Francis) to express the bittersweet longings of the main character. This is a nihilist statement that can actually make people appreciate life -- Utopia is what we all make of it, and everyone is an "outsider" in one way or another.
