A love letter to movies (and the French new wave of the 1960s in particular), Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers starts with a 1968 riot outside of a Parisian movie palace then burrows into an insular love triangle. Matthew (Michael Pitt, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), an expatriate American student, bonds with a twin brother and sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel), over their mutual love of film--they not only quote lines of dialogue, they act out small bits and challenge each other to name the cinematic source. Matthew suspects the twins of incest, but that doesn't stop him from falling into his own intimacies with Isabelle. As the threesome becomes threatened, Paris succumbs to student riots. The Dreamers aspires to be kinky, but the results are more decorative than decadent; nonetheless, the movie's lively energy recalls the careless and vital exuberance of Godard and Truffaut. --Bret Fetzer

When Isabelle and Theo (Eva Green, Louis Garrel) invite Matthew (Michael Pitt) to stay with them, what begins as a casual friendship ripens into a sensual voyage of discovery and desire in which nothing is off limits and anything is possible. Featuring an engaging, seductive cast, The Dreamers is a ?spellbinding, provocative feast!" (Ebert & Roeper)

3 out of 5 stars I'll say this: it is pretty........2007-09-13

This is a very pretty film. Paris is as rich and gorgeous as ever, and the main trio of actors are beautiful (and you get to see plenty of them!) But the film suffers from a seeming need to make the characters "quirky" that winds up coming across as some cross between pretentious and weird. We got the film because it was supposed to be erotic, but...um?

I guess the bottom line is, I just didn't believe in these characters or their relationship -- it felt contrived, calculated for effect (the "shocking" relationship between the siblings, etc. And hasn't the "American falls in with decadent Europeans" thing been done to death by now?)

I'm sure if you're a fan of one or more of the actors, that's probably enough to carry you through. As I said, they are pretty, but that wasn't enough for me.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful........2007-08-24

This movie is utterly beautiful. Its beyond words as to how amazing this film actually is. Utterly disturbing yet it puts you into some sort of artsy trance. *full frontal from Michael Pitt* You so cannot go wrong with this film!!! XoXoX

5 out of 5 stars The Dreamers or The Kinky?.......2007-08-24

I loved this movie! It is so packed with forbidden eroticism that it goes beyond taboo! But, it is not a bad kind of taboo.

The story centers around a young American film student studying in France. He doesn't have many friends, until one day he meets a beautiful girl at a rally and her off-standish brother. The siblings take the young American under their wing and eventually he moves in with them. It is during this time that he sees how "different" the siblings are.

During a late night bathroom run, he catches a glimpse of the brother and sister lying in the same bed nude. If you are schocked by this first erotic scene then you should definitley not watch the rest of the movie because it definitley doesn't get any milder. Although the plot is less than developed, the viewer is completely sucked in to the lives of the three major characters.

Though the siblings are weird and do things that normal brothers and sisters would never DREAM of doing, there is something extremeley natural and normal about it. As if seeing each other nude and during sexual acts is as normal as sharing a meal at the family dinner table. They portray the classic taboo of incest in a classy manner, if that is even possible.

I find myself unable to articulate just how good I thought this movie was. It shocked me from beginning to end, with behavior that I would normally find disgusting, but somehow found endearing in this movie. You just have to watch this movie for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Eva Green.......2007-08-14

The only reason to get this movie is for Eva Green. This woman has a body out of this world. She is the only reason I recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars an extraordinary film although not for everyone.......2007-07-23

this is by far one of my favorite movies ever. i, however, tend to like movies that are very matter of fact as many french movies are, and movies that deal with sex and sexual issues. the very direct addressing of adolescent sexual awakening and confusion might be too much for people with with sex issue hang ups. but for people who are comfortable with very honest story telling this movie is a triumph.

1 out of 5 stars Horrendous...should have been called "Three Guys With Swords" .......2007-08-08

This movie is possibly one of the worst films I have ever seen. Having been a huge fan of both the original novel, and the 1973-4 movie versions by Richard Lester; I was shocked and disgusted that
A: Disney put their name on it, and
B: that they actually had the nerve to call it "The Three Musketeers."
Possibly my favorite/worst moment of the movie was a spot where a bunch of bravos yell "It's Porthos the pirate!" When I saw this in the theater, I distinctly heard three other people around me (besides myself) exclaim "Porthos the PIRATE???"
It's a ridiculous, puerile, pitiful dilution of both a magnificent story (Dumas' novel) and a cinematic masterpiece (Lester's films.)
If you want to see barrels of gunpowder explode, maybe you should get this movie.
If, however, you want an inspired, dramatic, funny, action-packed adventure that's beautifully filmed, try here The Complete Musketeers (The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers)

5 out of 5 stars Eye Candy.......2007-07-17

Purists beware, this movie is absolutely nothing like the book.
It seems to be a mixture of a previous adventure mentioned briefly in the book mixed with a few of the highlights, such as the initial challenges and the grand finally. If you are looking for any sort of authentic reproduction of the book, this is not it.

For those of you looking for a light hearted romp and some Hollywood swashbuckling then you'll probably enjoy this movie. Its eye-candy cast and swashbuckling antics were clearly the priority, do not look for anything deeper plot wise. Honestly, the cast was fantastic and I wish they had done a real reproduction of the book. But as it is, this movie is just fine with me.

5 out of 5 stars Truly A Wonderful Film!! Highly Recommended........2007-06-09

If you've never read the book by Alexander Dumas, The Three Musketeers is a fabulous film that you will absolutely love. Several reviewers harp on the differences between the book and movie, but the very reason for creating a movie version is that it's SUPPOSED to be different. This one is excellently filmed, directed, and of particular note are all of the amazing actors! Personally, I've been in love with Oliver Platt, one of the most underrated actors of our time, for years, and this movie is an excellent showcase for his talents. But the star is most definately Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu, at his most evil best. I very highly recommend this movie to ALL ages, as it is appropriate to watch with your entire family.

1 out of 5 stars What WAS That?.......2007-06-08

I don't even know where to begin--the horrible acting, the terrible costuming, the obviously fake sets, the lack of continuity, or the cliched (and/or just plain stupid) lines? The "action and adventure" to which some have alluded is no more than a few people shooting each other or clashing swords while saying some really idiotic things; either that, or trying, and failing, to give the impression that they are truly courageous heroes. D'Artagnan looks and acts like a men's clothing model. The Musketeers are brainless wierdos. The king is a temper tantrum-throwing little kid. De Rochefort is obviously modifying his voice to make it more foreboding--but the fact that this is so obvious rather ruins the effect. And he looks like he should be in a gangster movie. Milady is definitely trying too hard. The red-haired doofus...I don't know where he came from. Well, that basically sums it up, folks.

4 out of 5 stars Forlicking Classic.......2007-05-15

Frolicking Classic; the classic story told in few words and comical scenes.
I love Oliver Platt who plays one of the Musketeers. All for one! and One
for all! Enjoy!

Despite the inevitable law of diminishing returns, The Matrix Revolutions is quite satisfying as an adrenalized action epic, marking yet another milestone in the exponential evolution of computer-generated special effects. That may not be enough to satisfy hardcore Matrix fans who turned the Wachowski Brothers' hacker mythology into a quasi-religious pop-cultural phenomenon, but there's no denying that the trilogy goes out with a cosmic bang instead of the whimper that many expected. Picking up precisely where The Matrix Reloaded left off, this 130-minute finale finds Neo (Keanu Reeves) at a virtual junction, defending the besieged human enclave of Zion by confronting the attacking machines on their home turf, while humans combat swarms of tentacled mechanical sentinels as Zion's fate lies in the balance. It all amounts to a blaze of CGI glory, devoid of all but the shallowest emotions, and so full of metaphysical hokum that the trilogy's detractors can gloat with I-told-you-so sarcasm. And yet, Revolutions still succeeds as a slick, exciting hybrid of cinema and video game, operating by its own internal logic with enough forward momentum to make the whole trilogy seem like a thrilling, magnificent dream. -- Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars The End of the Matrix Trilogy..........2007-07-16

"The Matrix: Revolutions" is the conclusion of a trilogy that began with the highly original "The Matrix" and continued with "The Matrix Reloaded." "Revolutions", despite not really adding any new material to the legend, manages to be a surprisingly satisfying conclusion to an epic sci-fi saga, one that cut some original ground and inspired its own pop-culture phenomenon.

"Matrix: Revolutions" picks up where "Reloaded" left off, with the last human city of Zion under siege by the machines. Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus rallies the survivors to buy time for some sort of miracle. Meanwhile, Neo (Keanu Reeves), the hoped-for source of that miracle, works his way through a world that seems equal parts computer language and vaguely Christian theology toward a confrontation with the renegade program Agent Smith. Neo's quest will take him and Trinity (Carrie Ann Moss) to Machine City in search of a final showdown with Smith. The result is frenetic action, with a few welcomes instances of "bullet time" thrown in.

In lieu of adding new material to the legend, the movie features long (even overlong) computer-generated action sequences that will appeal to hard-core fans of the series. A decisive explanation for the nature of the world in which the story takes place won't be obvious from a single viewing, but perhaps that just preserves some of the mystery. Character development is limited; fans will pick up where they left off but newcomers may be confused.

This movie is well recommended to fans of the Matrix phenomenon; newcomers should seek out the original movie as a starting point.

3 out of 5 stars (no spoilers) good thoughts and intentions, poor execution.......2007-07-11

This movie is only moderately entertaining, but what it lacks in its odd pacing and mediocre character development it makes up in intellectual appeal. Upon reflection, it's kind of an odd mix of mass Hollywood appeal and thought-provoking ideas. In this movie, the two elements don't really mesh.

On the one hand, it has the feel of an action movie. Though I'm not much into action movies these days, the action sequences here do exceed most action movies. These sequences are visually and technically stunning, and most of them are filled with new ideas. But aside from their impressiveness, the main pitfall of this movie, and of the whole trilogy, is how it uses action - the action gives the story its texture, but it's simply too conventional. When car-chases or gunfights or karate fights begin, the viewer's mind is intentionally put on pause, and s/he's encouraged to dig into the fight and give into the adrenaline rush. It reminds me of my intense dislike for musicals; even if a musical has a good plot and sound characters, when the music is cued, everything is put on hold for song and dance, when I'm just waiting for things to continue. Likewise, the action sequences here arrest the plot development. They're still entertaining, but in a very short-lived manner. The fighting compares well with every other movie with similar fighting, but it's poorly integrated into the story of The Matrix; and even if it proves groundbreaking, its influence will dissipate as directors one-up these movies by coming up with more exciting ways to have one character chase or demolish another.

The last hour of Revolutions is told in two consecutive unrelenting battles; it results in a long-lived and exciting climax, but it turns the viewer's attention away from the film's plot, and merely towards sigh and relief when the tension stops. And for all it was worth, by the time we reach the end, the plot developments feel minor in comparison.

The ending doesn't quite feel worth it, but it does convey the thought that went into the story's structure. In retrospect, it works very well in theory; it's almost like one of those complicated gun standoffs where more three or so characters are pointing guns at each other in various directions (and in touching every single past convention, the film does contain a brief literal version of this). Only here the characters exist and influence each other on different levels and in different worlds, and they're eventually brought together by similar yet conflicting interests. Moreover, each side pointing guns is made to represent different intertwining ideas. On one level, in order to accomplish this, the movie does occasionally spell things out too clearly to the viewer with pseudo-philosophical rants; but more importantly the characters end up playing out these roles and "ideas" - the structure of the story walks the walk so to speak.

To avoid spoiling it I won't give too much away. In and of itself, the end is fairly simple, but what has continued to impress me is how the movie's sequences of events arrived there from a "perfectly balanced equation" (which we hear about in The Matrix Reloaded), that pitted two seemingly contrasting ideas on different sides in order to fulfill its purpose. There is an inevitable logic to the "solution", which speaks to the trilogy as a whole.

But as I said before, most of this is painted in cheeky Hollywood clothing, complete with Bond-like sarcasm, overuse of stunt-men and CGI-effects, and dispensable characters and side-plots. With a lesser budget and geared towards a smaller adudience, the story could have been told in a tighter and more efficient manner in three or four hours if it had less focus on fighting, and more focus on the characters and the different levels of the story. But not to ruminate on what it could have been, I was glad that the movie challenged me more than most large-scale movies and gave me something pretty to watch at the same time. Hopefully it'll raise the bar for other mainstream flicks, beyond just by giving us new ways to film people shooting each other.

4 out of 5 stars "oh i'm not so bad, once you get to know me".......2007-06-23

Conclusion is what Revolutions is, bringing and ended to the explosive Matrix Trilogy. A direct continuation from Reloaded, Revolutions is once again more eye candy than anything else, with the actual Matrix getting less screen time than the first 2 films. The focus is on the great war in Zion city, against the machines. Its true, the best action and story in this movie all take place in the real world. But there is still plenty of Matrix involved, but only in the beginning and end of the film.

The ending is predictable, but the journey to reach the conclusion has smaller twists and turns along the way that are unexpected. The movie is very intense, in terms of action and cgi. It is truly a thrill ride and we finally get to see an army of mechs unleash their firepower upon the sentinels in Zion city. Neo and Smith face off in their final battle. Unlike the first Matrix, which incorporated a nice blend of realistic martial arts and wirework, this battle is more cgi and expands to the 2 barely fighting on any ground, thus limiting the true martial arts. Not a bad fight, but its ridiculously overdone and not very pretty.

Some say this movie is just plain bad, but I don't believe that is true. Most people want to compare it to the first Matrix, but independently its not a bad movie. While it is not nearly as good as the first Matrix, it is still a great movie, but just like Reloaded, the story effort is not as strong as the first Matrix, and the focus seems to be on the action. You'll want to see Reloaded before Revolutions, simply because Reloaded is part 1 and Revolutions is pt2.

4 out of 5 stars Jesus analogy aside, some brave choices here.......2007-05-17

You know, it's almost impossible to do a trilogy franchise and please fans of the original with episodes 2 and 3. When Reloaded came out, I listened to the masses who moaned and rolled their eyes that no one should bother and to just accept the original Matrix as the classic that it is, essentially pretending that they don't exist. When will I learn my lesson and go see for myself instead of writing things off like that?! I did the same thing with The Two Towers, which everyone told me I would hate. Well excuse me, I loved it. Every last minute. No, it wasn't Fellowship and it wasn't supposed to be, it was different and progressed the story. I feel the same way about Reloaded and Revolutions; it's essentially one enormous story (and yes, it's easy to see the Jesus and King Arthur analogies here) told in three very different films. It would be cowardice and unoriginal to duplicate the first film just to play it safe and I commend the W brothers for staying true to their vision, however and whenever that came about. I won't spoil any plot points here but there are some surprises because American audiences are accustomed to certain things and a few times this film zigs when you expect it to zag. The battle sequences at Zion are a bit long but they're well done, and while I hear a lot of griping about how they ripped off Aliens with their technology didn't we all think it was damn cool at the time and wish we'd seen it do more? I did. So here you get to see that in an insane standoff to save the city.

Reloaded and Revolutions are far more akin to one another than the original Matrix is to either and from what I hear from people in the industry, the W bros didn't know they would be doing 3 films initially so the Matrix was conceived and produced as a standalone project and then the trilogy grew out of the popularity. Now, I personally don't think that detracts from anything. Whether it was all conceived at the outset or not, they planted some very interesting seeds in The Matrix and then helped them to sprout in Reloaded and Revolutions. I liked the philosophy and ideologies lobbed out there, whether I agreed with it all or not. This franchise has balls. Once in a while I felt like the fight scenes or action got to be a bit lengthy but at the same time there was such astounding beauty within each segment it kept me hooked into it and interested.

And as for the absolute ending, all I can say is that if you need a neat and tidy Hollywood ending in order to feel satisfied (which is very common and understandable) then this will leave you frustrated or upset. I also see a corrolation between people's own attitudes about life, death and rebirth reflected in their reactions to this trilogy, though sometimes on an entirely subconscious level. I just wish I had seen them all in the theater rather than allowing myself to be swayed by the massive tidal wave of negativity I heard about the last two installments. I now own them all and I'd love to watch them in sequence sometime soon, like Lord of the Rings or the original Star Wars trilogy, to see how that brings it all together as well.

And for the love of God, let's lay off of Keanu for once! Every actor has their niche, even Jack Nicholson. Would you want to see Jack as King Lear? Probably not. I hated Keanu in Much Ado because it's not his element, but as Neo he is the perfect choice.

If you open yourself to an intense experience and let go of any expectation of seeing another Matrix, you might enjoy this film as much as I did. Again, it might help to watch even 2 and 3 together since they do have such a similar energy and really build on one another. I think this is powerful stuff that would make for some really interesting discussions with a movie group.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks originality and style of acts I & II.......2007-02-28

Revolutions was not a great climax to the Matrix trilogy. The first was sensational. It was stylistic, original, and thought provoking. The first time I watched it I was captivated the entire time and wanted more. Many people did not think much of Reloaded, but I personally loved it. It was not mind-bending like the first, but that wasn't its purpose. The Matrix asked the questions; Reloaded set the stage for a final resolution. I felt it did so with continued originality and style. The fight sequences were artistic and compelling. I don't know how Matrix fans could not have loved watching the result of Neo realizing the potential of his abilities. I can't help overusing the word, but the movie just overflowed with style. The architect scene was odd, but it had good dialogue and was a pretty fun change of direction.

Revolutions almost completely dropped all of those aspects that I enjoyed about the first two. Instead of original, it was filled with cliche. Most of the Zion battle seemed like it could have been made by cutting and pasting from dozens of war/action films. Other than the visual aspect, there was nothing original about the entire Zion portion of the movie. Amaze some people by how well you can pilot a ship. Can an unlikely character somehow find it in him to overcome all when nearly all hope is lost? I need not mention the overdone yet cliche Neo/Trinity scene. The Merovingian fight scenes were fun but basically a hybrid of the security guard fight from I and the medieval weapons one from II.

On the whole, I liked the culmination of the Neo storyline. The machine city, along with the train station, was one of the few aspects of the film that was original and interesting. On a fairly superficial note, I just did not enjoy the fight scenes with Smith. The stylistic choreography was replaced with two guys flying all over the place. Even more superficially, I always loved Smith's wisea-- lines from the previous films, but we didn't really get any more of those. Again, I thought the concept of the Neo storyline was good. It just felt like it was delivered a little less thoughtfully, almost as though that plot was the last to be worked out before some sort of deadline. The Oracle's eyes were thrown in as being important to get then barely played any part in the story. The Merovingian didn't have anything interesting to add this time around. Generally it just felt like the actual plot of Revolutions was thrown together somewhat hastily.

The movie wasn't terrible, it was just quite mediocre. Visually it had many great moments including the batman bouncers at the coat check, much of the Zion battle, and the Source. However, it mostly lacked originality and didn't fit together that well. As the final act, Revolutions could have been the culmination of an exciting, philosophical, and compelling trilogy. Instead it was just the last movie.

Advertised as "X-rated and Animated," Fritz the Cat earned an impressive $25 million in 1972. Screenwriter-director Ralph Bakshi based the film on three of Robert Crumb's stories about a superficial college student who tried to seduce anything in a skirt. The gritty, often gross film shocked U.S. audiences accustomed to innocent flirtations and slapstick comedy in cartoons. Thirty years later, Fritz looks less shocking than puerile. The violence grafted onto Crumb's innocent stories feels gratuitous, and the racial imagery tasteless. As dated as a Nehru jacket, the film will interest students of animation history and American pop culture. Crumb detested the film: he drew Fritz as a decadent Hollywood star, who was exploited by caricatures of Bakshi and producer Steve Krantz--and murdered by a bitter ex-girlfriend. "Another casualty of the '60s..." --Charles Solomon

Description

Maverick writer-director Ralph Bakshi (Heavy Traffic) made his feature-length film debut with this "startling and audacious" (The Hollywood Reporter) foray into adult-content animation, creating the first X-rated cartoon and one of the most successful animated features of its time! Based on a legendary character created by underground comic book artist-writer R. Crumb, Fritz the Cat is a brilliant commentary on '60s life and a "snarling satire that stubbornly refusesto curl up in anyone's lap" (Playboy). It's the age of awakening and Fritz, one way-cool cat and NYU student, loves to embrace every experimental experience that crosses his path. Embarking on a fantastic journey of self-discovery, he indulges in everything from multiple bedroom follies to a wild joy ride through a dangerous Harlem. But when Fritz joins a group of radically aggressive hippies, he finds himself holding the dynamite that will detonate the ultimate '60s statement one that could cost him his life!

5 out of 5 stars FUN IN CARTOONS.......2007-07-21

This was my first time seeing this movie. It was really good. I liked it because it had sexual scenes but they weren't like total hardcore porn. It was really funny. This definatly isn't for children.

5 out of 5 stars An oldie but goodie!!.......2007-06-25

Takes me back to my student days in London, when you could actually smoke in the cinema!!! Can't remember how many times I saw it. It thoroughly deserves its place as a cult classic. The first ever x-rated animated movie full of social comment. Who can forget the death of the crow!!

4 out of 5 stars FRIZT THE CAT.......2007-05-13

I SAW THIS MOVIE WHEN I WAS A TEEN AND I LIKE IT THEN AND I LIKE IT MORE NOW!

5 out of 5 stars So awful its funny!.......2007-02-13

I loved this animation, even though the creator (the awesome R. Crumb) hated it so much he killed the character off! And, unlike "Wizards", I don't feel guilty liking it.

Ah, Fritz, so much a lot of young, single guys see in themselves when they see it. Fritz was mainly out to get laid, and 'went with the flow' to be smooth with the ladies. However, he also got actually into the real issues and concerns of the sixties, along with the dark underside.

Sexy, funny, dark, violent and ugly, it is truly a classic!

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-01-19

I was so excited to be able to find this lost icon. I gave it away as a Christmas gift to a friend on Christmas Eve. We all sent the kids out of the room and we all watched it. We were amazed at how the politics ring true almost 40 years later. We all had a blast! Fritz is still a cool cat!

Looking for a way to make the American Revolution come alive for your child? Based on Esther Forbes's book of the same name, Johnny Tremain takes place in Boston from July 1773 through April 1775, and tells the story of a young apprentice silversmith drawn into a fight for human rights. When an accident cripples Johnny Tremain's hand and ends his hopes of becoming a great silversmith, Tremain finds himself without work and accused of a crime he did not commit. Sons of Liberty members Paul Revere and Josiah Quincy are outraged by the circumstantial case against Tremain, agree to represent him free of charge, and win his acquittal in court. Through association with his new friends, Tremain begins to better understand the current political climate, and eventually joins them in the battle for freedom. Tremain's involvement in the emptying of British tea into Boston Harbor, the arrival of the Redcoats in Boston, and the beginnings of the American Revolution at Concord is powerful and moving. The costuming is splendid, the music patriotic, and the dialogue well crafted. The film stars Hal Stalmaster as Johnny Tremain, costars Luana Patten and Jeff York, and runs 80 minutes. This classic Disney film is wonderful entertainment and a fairly faithful representation of a crucial period in American history. (Ages 8 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad film as far as Disney History is concerned.......2007-08-26

I realize this is a Disney movie from the '50s, but I would have liked a faster pace. The Boston Tea Party reinactment was fun to watch and the story of a boy caught up in Revolution fever was interesting. The romance angle was not played up much and some of the moralizing I had to fast-forward through.

Good film for those with kids who you want to know more about the American Revolution. The Crossing is another excellent Revolution film.

5 out of 5 stars Well done!.......2007-07-01

This fictional account begins with the events leading up to the Boston Tea Party and continues through the opening battles of the Revolutionary War. It allows us to put ourselves in their places and remember what they fought for. I thought it was very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Great for history lesson.......2007-05-07

My wife is a teacher and she used it for her class of 5th graders on her lessons of the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence. The students enjoyed it since it was a movie. My wife loved it because it was a history lesson without the normal boring format.

4 out of 5 stars Family Friendly Version of the Events Leading to the Revolutionary War.......2007-04-28

Jonathan Lyte Tremain is an apprentice silversmith in Boston in 1773. Johnny's whole purpose in life is to try to become the best silversmith possible. Johnny is quite diligent in becoming a good silversmith. Barely perceptible to Johnny, at first, there are activities around Johnny that are leading to a confrontation between the colonies in America and English soldiers. The confrontation will spark a battle that will eventually lead to the founding of the United States of America.

Johnny Tremain believes he can do more, if only his master Ephraim Lapham (character actor Will Wright, who appeared in nearly 200 films and television shows) would trust him. While trying to prove his ability, Johnny accidentally burns his hand. The skin on his fingers grows together and Johnny is no longer able to be an apprentice to Ephraim Lapham.

Johnny goes to a wealthy man, Jonathan Lyte, for assistance. Johnny's mother told him that Mr. Lyte (Sebastian Cabot, "Family Affair," "Winnie the Pooh" and dozens of other movie and television appearances) was a relative. Of course Mr. Lyte considers Johnny a scam artist trying to blackmail him for money, and Mr. Lyte accuses Johnny of being a thief. Famed attorney Josiah Quincy (Whit Bissell, famous character actor who appeared in more than 275 movies and television episodes) represents Johnny Tremain free of charge, and Johnny's life changes forever.

While Johnny is going through his travails, historic events are in progress around him. Initially Johnny refuses to participate in these events because he believes that if he does his job and becomes a good silversmith then his life will be fine. Johnny believes the people working against the Crown are foolish. However, Johnny's tragic accident gives Johnny a new perspective.

Johnny finds work in a print shop that produces The Boston Observer, where Johnny gets a front seat to the events leading up to the American Revolution. As Johnny becomes more enamored of the concept of liberty and has a greater appreciation for the meaning of liberty, he becomes more involved in the cause. Johnny meets many of the important men leading the cause, including Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and James Otis. Eventually Dr. Joseph Warren frees the fingers of Johnny's hand and Johnny is able to participate more directly in the activities of the Sons of Liberty.

A shipment of tea has arrived in Boston with a tax imposed on England, a tax that the colonists did not approve. After appealing to the governor of the colony, and losing, the colonists show their disapproval by dumping the tea into Boston harbor, the famed "Boston Tea Party." The movie continues onward to the events at Lexington and Concord and concludes shortly thereafter.

This movie is a relatively sanitized version of the events leading to the American Revolution. The characters are generally larger than life, and many of the grittier details are glossed over. What remains is the story of a group of people who have the goal of gaining representation for the Colonies. The movie does portray the Colonists as having pure motives and being paragons of virtue, and most of the English are relatively heartless with only profit as their goal. Of course these are stereotypes and the truth was much more complex, but the simplicity of the movie reflects on the style of story-telling in the 1950's.

The movie does show people being shot, though in a relatively benign way; i.e., they fall over, though sometimes dramatically. Because of these scenes, this Disney movie may not be suitable for very young family members, perhaps younger than 6 or 7 years old. However, everyone else will find this reminder of the roots of American independence to be interesting and enjoyable.

Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars A 'minor' note.......2007-03-27

Content of the movie aside, has no one noticed the cover of the DVD??? The American flag is backwards!!! The field of blue is always on the LEFT if the flag is hanging vertical. I'm glad that Disney didn't get to build its American history theme park in northern Virginia back in the 80's. If they can't get a simple DVD cover right, just imagine what could have happened.

A different sort of Sergio Leone Western, this one takes place during the Mexican Revolution, with more politics than usual. But there's still plenty of action, with Rod Steiger as a cigar-chomping peasant who robs banks to liberate political prisoners, and James Coburn as an Irish terrorist trying to flee from his bitter past. They team up to thwart a sadistic officer and help the cause; redemption for the more subdued Coburn provides added depth. This contains the longer uncut version (released in Italy) known as Duck, You Sucker, featuring more flashbacks, more politics, and a more unsavory Steiger. But it's terrific fun, with Ennio Morricone's moody score and Coburn's most underrated performance. --Bill Desowitz

5 out of 5 stars Where was this?.......2007-07-28

Wow, this was a great western by one of the great western directors that was unvailable for years. How wonderful that MGM finally released it with its original title. Coburn and Steiger are at the top of their games and the story is both thrilling and meaningful. A great film.

5 out of 5 stars Torture of Dr. Villega.......2007-07-24

Does this version of the movie include the shadowed torture of Dr. Villega?? I own the region 2 (UK)version because I was unwilling to wait for the American release and its missing on that copy. if it is included this would be a great find. To the person that answers this question, THANK YOU!!

4 out of 5 stars "You can't leave now, you're a great, grand, glorious hero of the revolution...".......2007-07-14

"Duck, You Sucker" (also known as "A Fistful of Dynamite") is one of those films you need to watch a couple of times before you can fully appreciate it. It's another Western epic from Sergio Leone, yet it is extremely different from his famous "Man with No Name" trilogy. Filled with more deep personal conflicts, transformations and revelations, this makes for one entertaining film.

Juan is a despicable thief and sometimes murderer who's not afraid to get his hands a little dirty if it means getting goods and money for he and his family. John is an Irish Revolutionary who has expertise in blowing just about anything up to smithereens. When Juan sees the man in action, he gets the idea that John could help him empty out the bank of his dreams. With Juan's trigger finger and John's dynamite tossing, how could it go wrong? The only thing is Juan ends up getting himself involved in an unexpected revolution that he never wanted to be a part of, and for better or worse the two end up forming a very odd bond and team.

I wouldn't call this my favorite Leone film, but it is one I find myself watching again and again. There's just something very appealing about it, and that's no easy feat when you really set out to have your main guy, Rod Steiger who plays "Juan," to be as despicable and vile as they come. Within the first 10 minutes or so, we see him kill somebody, rob a group of snobs and even rape a woman snob (though the rape isn't violent and is relatively short, it still is rape). I really thought there was no way in hell I would be able to sympathize for a character like that, but I knew there was the great James Coburn who could make the movie work for me. Surprise, Leone really does actually get you to care about Juan as you see him grow and mature through this little quest (he's still very flawed and shallow at times, but the growth and transformation is undeniable). And Colburn, who plays "John," is also not without his many flaws, as he's a tortured soul who can't seem to let go of the past. The two men are absolutely fantastic in their roles.

This new 2-Disc edition of "Duck, You Sucker" includes the complete 157 minute version that wasn't shown in the U.S., which includes a lot of extended scenes and flashbacks (most noticeably the three minute flashback at the end that was usually trimmed down to keep the flow and avoid confusion). The movie looks and sounds great, and if you're afraid the 5.1 surround will ruin the authenticity or credibility of the film, you can always watch it in mono. There are some nice featurettes and a commentary from a film historian, Sir Christopher Frayling.

"Duck, You Sucker" has a great balance of action, comedy, drama and even heart at times. Again, I don't know if I would call this his best film, but it is definitely one of Sergio Leone's more entertaining films. I'd say put this on your list at some point, especially if you're a huge film buff, as it is a very different movie experience. So sit down, grab some popcorn and enjoy the show, but beware if at some point in your living room you hear a fuse and some stranger in the distance yelling, "Duck, you sucker!" -Michael Crane

3 out of 5 stars My utopia for a dream... the American dream, please.......2007-07-13

3 1/2 stars

Way too long and unnecessarily slow (even for Leone's standards). A cartoonish overlook at the Mexican Revolution. The characters are exaggerated to fit into the stereotypes of a loathable capitalist troupe (the American empresario, the rich and sexually repressed woman, the gluttonous priest, the mercenarious soldiers...) presented against the revolutionaries (the sly and higly read leader, the specialist -James Coburn, the dynamiter-, and the mass of poor). Rod Steiger, who plays the main role, is the individualistic outsider, however, he ends up getting involved in the revolution unwillingly. What he cares for is himself and his family. He is not such a sucker as to fight for the intellectuals who promise that changes are about to happen and end up taking the place of the former oligarchy; while those who really fight -the poor- will end up probably dead. So there is a lesson here. It's more a political coming of age story.

There's not much talking but a few lines do stand out: "I've only judged once in my life and I will never do it again." Says Coburn, meaning when in the past, when he was fighting for the Irish revolution he had to "follow the rules of engagement", let's put it this way (not to give out too much of the story); or "if I have to choose between the chicken-thieves and the uniform killers I'd rather choose the uniform killers",
Coburn's words after realizing how much hypocrisy was on the side of the revolutionaries but choosing not be a free-thinking individualist like Steiger is. The 2 men become great pals and the movie rests most of its interest on that friendship, specially since they represent psychologies so much apart (in the beginning).

So even though politics seems to be the issue targeted here, it's only the background for the real story: human life, friendship, family, love. The utopian ideals are dead by the end of the film, and one friend finds himself holding the other -who is about to die- while saying to him: "Remember (what we said) about America..." What started as a utopia, ended as a dream: the American Dream (which is more than many people can afford).

Great Leone flick, with all of the trademarks you'd come to expect from the man who reinvented the western as we know it. Wide angles, close-ups, and James Coburn and Rod Stieger in award worthy roles make this an underrated gem from one of the great directors of all time.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2007-09-01

Why a movie on the character Cromell was done is to me puzzling. I love Richard Harris as well as Alec Guiness. What a waste of money and talent. I wish historical movies would try to be accurate. This one fails miserably.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful time period & topic, great actors, so-so history lesson.......2007-05-31

I first saw this movie when I was around 12. As with most kids that age, I knew nothing of the historical details. However, this movie so entertained and interested me that I went on to study the English Civil War in far more depth. The more that I learned, the less impressed I was by this film, and its woefully inaccurate abbreviation of history. Now, with degrees and graduate degrees to my name, and having spent time in England in the company of English Civil War re-enactors (one of whom wore and ORIGINAL 400 year old lobster-tail cavalry helmet!), I must credit this movie for helping to spark my subsequent historical interest. That alone is worth a five star rating. To have given justice to the subject of the English Civil War, this would have had to be a mini-series, and not a single 140 minute movie -- but such things were unknown in 1970.
Enjoy the movie for what it is, seek out some good histories to flesh out the details, and let's hope that we live long enough to see some talented and ambitious filmmaker do it right!

4 out of 5 stars Cromwell.......2007-04-19

'Cromwell' is about power, the movie depicts the struggle between
The Parliament and the King... that eventually starts the English Civil War.
King Charles is played superbly by Alec Guinness a thespian of the highest order- (King Charles)is an ineffectual and some may say a weak King, bringing the monarchy to its lowest ebb due to his indecision and the backing of the Catholic over the native Church of England (not Protestant but a REFORMED CATHOLIC church) amazing what we can learn at the movies!
Anyway... Cromwell's new army, wins the Civil war and the Parliment takes its new place at the head of the country.

Richard Harris is good, but somewhat over the top, as the brooding Cromwell, his voice is croaky and at times the Irishman looks all at sea! the musical score is average, well shot and framed... An excellent informing entertainment, a movie well worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars Does History Imitate Fun, or Does Fun Imitate History?.......2007-04-06

I caught this film in the middle on TV several years ago, and liked it so much I finally just had to see the whole thing. It's spellbinding! I'm sure liberties were taken with the actual history, but how many historical films *don't* do that? The gist is still there, and the characterizations are delicious--Richard Harris as a bombastic, larger-than-life Cromwell; Alec Guinness the saintly (in his own mind), unfortunate Charles I; Robert Morley the pompous Manchester. The cast members resemble their characters, and despite the almost Shakespearean delivery, there's no overacting going on. These guys are portraying major historical figures and doing it in a major historical way, and they make it pretty darn memorable too.

The only thing I really dislike is the soundtrack. The incidental music is dated, and some of the music integral to the plot, such as the choruses sung by the marching armies, isn't even in the same cosmos as what 17th-century people would have actually heard. That's why I took a star off, but it's not like it ruins the movie.

If you're interested in the English Civil War, you could do worse than see this film as an introduction. The actors bring the characters to life so vividly that when you read about them later on you'll be going, "Yeah, I *know* him!" For that alone, it's a great contribution, and it's just plain old fun in and of itself. Just be prepared to watch it all the way through, because you won't want to hit the pause button.

Star studded film of excellant quality. Kept me interested all the way through. A nice easy way to revisit our history.

Lieutenant Brian Ash and the brave men of the 97th Tunneling Company must accomplish their ongoing mission: to defuse all unexploded bombs (UXBs). These are the stories of their lives--unsung heroes and their wives, lovers, and families, all facing the pressures of one of the war's deadliest jobs.

Brought to you by the awarding-winning producer of Upstairs, Downstairs, DANGER UXB features Anthony Andrews (Brideshead Revisited) and a stellar supporting cast. Based on actual war memoirs, all 13 compelling and intelligently written episodes of this series are now available on DVD for the first time.

Harrowing, funny, and immediately addictive, the 1979 British television series Danger UXB stars Anthony Andrews as Army Lieutenant Brian Ash, an engineering student whose excitement about his rapid commission as an officer during World War II is tempered by his unenviable post with a bomb disposal unit. Assigned to a fatality-heavy team that defuses unexploded German bombs scattered throughout London during the blitz, Ash faces down his terror and eventually becomes the closest thing to an expert one can be dismantling sometimes booby-trapped ordnance. In doing so, he earns the respect of his superiors as well as from the enlisted men working under him, and his protracted survival is nothing short of miraculous considering the tragic number of friends and colleagues Ash loses.

There is a dark side, however. The longer Ash sticks with his unit, the more obsessive he becomes about his responsibility to keep London safe. Meanwhile, his nerves grow frayed and his morale collapses. Ash's desperate romance with a married woman (Judy Geeson) provides him little to hold onto, and when a true crisis ambushes his spirit toward the end, one can't be sure if he's headed for the scrap heap of permanent casualties. Based on the recollections of an actual wartime bomb disposer, Danger UXB was created by John Hawkesworth, who later produced (and wrote many episodes for) the fantastic Sherlock Holmes TV series starring Jeremy Brett. Despite many tense moments in Danger UXB's 13 episodes--one is always expecting a bomb to blow away a favorite character--the show is also graced by great humor (Ash's crew sometimes bring to mind Sergeant Bilko's hustlers) and a warm, likable cast. Andrews himself, perhaps, has never been better. This boxed set includes a History Channel documentary, "Bomb Squad." --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars You CAN go home again!.......2007-08-28

Back in the 80's I caught several episodes in this series on local Univ. TV. Finally I got around to finding/ordering it.

It's as good, or better, than I remember. My wife-younger than I--also got caught up in the drama and enjoyed every segment.

    4 out of 5 stars Disarming is a Blast.......2007-07-10

If you enjoy WWII series like "Foyles War" and "Band of Brothers" that have great acting, realism, and superb settings, then you will want to catch this series. Based on true events, it will keep your curiosity satisfied and entertain you as well. I am a huge fan of WWII movies and series so I especially appreciate it when they make me feel immersed in them and part of the action. You will be sweating and smelling the dusty ruins of the London houses as they disarm the bombs in the bombed out areas.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Wait!.......2007-06-18

When this series was first aired in the US, I heard how good it was, but it never was seen in this area. Over the years I'd looked at the VHS tapes, but they were expensive and usually in the wrong format. On a whim I happened to check Amazon for them recently, and I was very pleasantly surprised to find them in the US format, DVD, and priced very reasonably. I've watched about half of them so far, and it has certainly been worth the wait. Fantastic series that looks as if it were filmed today. You won't be displeased.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate! - Hurrah for the CRE!!.......2007-05-09

A first-rate BBC series that was originally shown in the US back in the early 1980s or so on PBS. I must fall into that catergory of people who first saw it then and have not seen it since. Still its one of those works that holds up well over the years. The acting is superb all around. The story draws you into the characters and the times they lived in during the Blitz in 1940. Few productions give you this kind of qaulity production anymore. Sure there aren't the fancy special effects stuff of today because this is a story for adult viewers, not grown-up kids wanting just a lot of noise instead of decent plot and character development.

Americans don't know what its like to have all their major cities bombed as happened to the British during the Battle of Britain in 1940, commonly known as the Blitz over there. To see this series you get some idea what daily life might have been like. Of course the Germans would get it much worse when the Royal Air Force and US 8th Air Force returned the favor to Germany just a few years later. Yes, there is a lot of none action in this series, which endeavors to show what life was like in that unique period for Britain. The romance between Ash and Susan is a prime example, but it is not annoying like so many obligatory romances in these kinds of stories generally are.

Everything in this series is realistic and believeable. Even the filler is interesting because it sheds light on the way people lived then. The DVD edition would have benefited a bit by having a sub-title option because the varied accents and numerous Britishisms make the dialouge difficult to follow at times. This is a very British production in that sense, and US viewers not familier with the lingo might have a tough time. As they say, the UK and US are two countries seperated by a common language! This series certainly shows that!

The DVD extra feature about bomb disposal was not much of an addition. The show hardly touches on the WW2 period in the UK, and spends most of its time with the NYPD bomb squad! You couldn't find something almost more non-related than this, even though in theory there is a connection. I guess the A & E people had nothing else on this topic to drop in. Too bad the BBC were not consulted for something more appropriate. Even with these two minor issues the series still deserves 5 stars and will richly reward the viewer every time. Hurrah for the CRE! (Corps Royal Engineers)

4 out of 5 stars Nice to finally get my hands on this........2007-03-14

I remember seeing bits and pieces of this series on Public Television in the 70's but between school, college and military service, I never saw the entire series in sequence. This DVD collection was a brilliant piece of work which provides you with the all the episodes in one fell swoop. You follow and grow to love the men who, often with little or now training, are charged with defussing and disposing of unexploded ordinance dropped by the Nazis on England and placed by Britain for defense.

I didn't expect a DD soundtrack and wasn't disappointed in that but I was saddened not to have any bonus interviews or documentary materials included with DVD. These oversights are what kept me from giving this box set a '5". Worth every penny though...
