5 out of 5 stars My Father's Glory.......2006-08-28

I hear the book is boring. I can't read the DVD jacket at all. However, I can thoroughly enjoy this movie. The setting is France, beginning of the 20th century. This time has always been fertile ground for the thematically inclined. This film gives us stunning visuals, strong acting and characterization, and a subtly and wickedly funny indictment of hypocrisy. I'd also swear it's autobiographical, covering several years in the author's early life without being entirely about the author. The title isn't the only thing to imply it's his father's story. Fantastic scenery and natural beauty, which for some reason I've never associated with France.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, but..........2006-07-28

I am a French teacher, and I was hoping to use this movie in class and for different levels. I would have done this by showing the original version (spoken in French), but with the option of using subtitles in either French or English (depending on the level of the students)

When I looked up the title, the description did not either say it was or was not subtitled in either of these languages. I took a chance, hoping that it would be in at least one language. It was not.

I was disappointed that the movie did not have any subtitles at all. So all I am left with is the original French version (which is great), but I really wanted it to be subtitled as well.

It is a good movie, but I am disappointed that Amazon did not adequately describe its contents.

5 out of 5 stars two great movies..........2005-10-31

4 out of 5 stars ThecCount of monte christo.......2007-06-09

What a load of rubbish re time to write a review about how much foreign asian ius in this. I wanted NOT DER GRAF VON MONT CHRISTO BUT The count of Monte Christo. I'm a long time Collector Buyer of Amazon and not too happy. I do like the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Family Movie........2006-12-03

This version of the classic Dumas novel is very entertaining. It boasts a superb troupe of actors:

Tony Curtis, Donald Pleasance, and Louis Jourdan are the triumvirate of villians whose conspiracy causes a great injustice.

Trevor Howard does a marvellous job as the tutor and mentor of our story's hero.

But this film is really Richard Chamberlain's tour de force who begins the story as the young sailor Edmund Dantes, and who, through his wrongful imprisonment in the Chateau d'If (and a treasure map of his mentor) is transformed into the 'Avenging Angel' - the Count of Monte Cristo. Chamberlain's performance is very moving.

The story's themes of lost love, the unfairness of life, despair, and revenge are universal human experiences which are timeless.

I heartily recommend this film.

5 out of 5 stars Great quality DVD.......2006-09-22

I bought a copy of this DVD from Salesawake. It is a great transfer, looking far better than my old VHS copy. It is also letterboxed. If this is a favorite movie of yours, and you have it on VHS, it is well worth the price to upgrade.

4 out of 5 stars follows Dumas' book, Count ..........2006-07-30

This is an excellent rendition of Dumas' story line of the Count of Monte Cristo (as opposed to the late version of '95 which is terribly tinsel town p.c.)

It would have been nice had it followed completely Dumas' book where the Count ends happily with the African princess, but oh well ...

3 out of 5 stars The Count of Monte-Cristo (Der Graf von Monte Christo).......2006-03-30

I purchased this dvd because I had previously viewed the original and thought it a worthwhile gift for the children in our family. I was displeased to note how may of what I deem to be crucial scense have been deleted.

It is easy to understand how those who elected to make the film would have been compelled to eliminate much of the prose/dialog that the author included since this work was originally written as a play .. the medium then practiced at the time of its creation. Yet, it boggles my mind that the simple transfer from video to dvd should further reduce the content.

I have given this product 3 stars because what remains is still a classic and a valuable learning tool for one's children. However, as a commercial product I can not endorse it for the butchery that has occurred.

For those who enjoy such classics .. look elsewhere for some other product that hasn't reduced the content.

The Chateau is a trifle, yet it may stick in your head. Paul Rudd and Romany Malco play two American brothers, Graham and Allen, who inherit an enormous French chateau when their hitherto unknown great-uncle dies. The bickering pair, equipped with only a smattering of French, soon discover that the chateau is hugely in debt and the servants don't want to leave. While trying to sell the place, they vie for the affections of a sweet maid (Sylvie Testud) and comically grapple with cultural differences. The Chateau has a bit of social satire, some deft character portraits, and some very funny mangled French. Rudd and Malco banter entertainingly; Rudd is particularly good, both funny and a little sad as Graham flails to find a new life that he didn't fully realize he wanted. Though slight, the movie has surprising moments that cut deeper than you'd expect. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A film that proves that digital video is not going to "save" the industry..........2006-12-04

I saw the directors of this "film" on Charlie Rose, of all places (Charlie usually lends his TV show to more important filmmakers than the creators of this "film"). All they talked about was how easy it was to make their film with digital video cameras. I'm glad it was easy to make their film, because it certainly wasn't easy to watch it. This film is slight, stupid, boring, and terrible, from both a technical standpoint and an aesthetic one. It seems the filmmakers said "let's go to a chateau with some actors and real cheap DV cameras" and make a movie. Well, that's exactly what they did. When people proclaim DV the future, junk like this gets made, distributed, and even put on DVD. I have seen good, even great films, shot on DV, but this isn't even close. Technology ultimately doesn't matter if your films sucks, and this film sucks.

1 out of 5 stars Shoot the Americans - not the chicken and boar, PLEASE!!!!.......2005-08-07

After having seen this movie, I understand why Europeans, Arabs and everybody else hates Americans... There are scenes where we hoped the servants would either poison the two annoying guys from Kansas or just flat out shoot them in a hunting accident and make them disappear.
The story idea is great, but the acting and script is so poor and unworthy of being described in a review.
Jesse must either have personal ties to the building where he filmed-or really fallen in love with the building. Everytime the story could have taken off we get a stop with yet another look at the building itself.
It's a miracle to us, how anybody on here could call this movie funny or entertaining - the movie is bad, pretending it to be a satyre doesn't make it any better.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2004-11-18

I cannot believe the black actor in this film is so sterotypical of the ghetto or uneducated image we've seen in films like "baby boy". Almost every line he had included a cuss word or n word. He didn't add a thing to the film except to be an annoyance. I don't know what this film was about. There are parts where there is a long silence with no talking. The whole movie was shot in the house with the exception of the maid when she finally leaves the house.
There are a few scenes where the characters are running around without any obvious aim. The film attempts to make the audience interested only to leave us saying, "what was all that excitement about?"

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good bijou of a movie.......2004-04-24

I'd been told this was a "small" movie, and wasn't expecting a great deal, but was thoroughly entertained. The plot develops in surprising ways; and the characters seem appropriately off-balance throughout. I understand portions of the movie were improvised, which may account for this. If so, it's a thoroughly appropriate tactic. The only word of warning is that you may need some French to understand the entertaining way it's fractured in this movie, and the iron control the French characters must be exercising to control their faces in response. Rule of thumb: if you don't know what a bijou is, you might not get it.

A fascinating exercise is to compare this movie with I Capture the Castle (2003), which develops the identical premise in a completely different way.

1 out of 5 stars You Have To Be Kidding!.......2004-03-04

How anyone could rate this movie 4-5 stars is beyond belief. This was such a contrived movie that had a simple plot that went nowhere. As I watched this movie I could not figure out if it was meant to be a comedy or a drama. It was never very funny and both lead actors, playing one white and one adopted black brother, had scenes in the movie that were terrible. Romany Malco has a scene where he is running around in his underwear for no apparent reason accept to show off his body. He jumps out of bed when his cell phone rings, runs down the stairs and then outside and back in just to gather everyone in the house and scold them, in his drawers? He is talentless and idiotic as a "brother" in France that no one can relate to. Paul Rudd is likable but his shining scene is when he comes back to the chateau drunk and "grossly" tells off everyone - people he has known for less than a week! The servants are the best actors in the movie and play their parts well...but can't make up for the dismal rest. Ludicrous - a bad movie that probably could have been funny if they had went for laughs instead of drama. This is another example of a rental that you think is going to be good but then disappoints!

4 out of 5 stars Dig Deeper.......2007-09-11

The Da Vinci Code was a great fictional tale that touched on a variety of religious and historical theories. Anyone who is interested in digging deeper to get a better understanding of the truth behind the bloodline will enjoy watching this movie.

5 out of 5 stars the real deal .......2007-09-10

For those of us that are dead serious about research, are active on the forums, read the current literature (Paranoia, Atlantis Rising), etc. we know the 'real deal' when we see it. This one people will be referencing 20 years from now and should be made available to libraries, universities, etc. An instant classic.

5 out of 5 stars Dan Brown's Secret Consultant Reveals All.......2007-08-29

I remember seeing Tim Wallace-Murphy on the History Channel and was amazed by his vast knowledge and experience with the Knights Templar and the bloodline of Jesus Christ, fascinating stuff. He reminds me a bit of a character that could be in a Harry Potter movie. Found him to be very enjoyable in this film.

5 out of 5 stars You can forget all about The DaVinci Code Movie.......2007-08-24

Because this is the real "DaVinci Code", that is the history and facts about the bloodline of Jesus Christ. The author was the primary consultant to Dan Brown, go figure, so what you get here is probably the most knowledgeable person on the earth in regards to this topic. If you like The DaVinci Code you have to check out this DVD.

Description

PRESENTED BY HENRY LINCOLN, CO-AUTHOR OF HOLY BLOOD, HOLY GRAIL, The Original Source of The Da Vinci Code 's Fascinating Storyline

Thousands of people climb to the isolated hilltop village of Rennes-le-Château each year, inspired by Dan Brown's novel, The Da Vinci Code and drawn by the mystery surrounding the priest Bérenger Saunière and his unexplained riches.

What was the secret Saunière knew that could bring down the Catholic church? What is behind the mysterious symbolism carved into the church itself? What is the coded message left behind by Saunière that so inspired Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown? Is this the true location of the Holy Grail? Did Mary Magdalene flee to this remote part of France carrying the bloodline of Christ?

Now you too can discover the wealth of fascinating detail hidden in this mystical village and the "treasures" of the surrounding countryside, in the company of the man that started it all, Henry Lincoln. For many years he used to take small groups to visit the key locations, explaining first hand "all the history and mystery that have made the village world famous." Henry guides you through all his favorite places, including Carcassonne and Montségur, and introduces the "eighth wonder of the world", the Rennes-le-Château Pentacle of Mountains and the incredible geometrical landscape of this remote part of southwestern France.

2 out of 5 stars A monotonous travelogue that might be of interest to those who've read his books.......2006-06-14

Perhaps this video will satisfy the readers of Lincoln's various works, such as The Sacred Place, The Messianic Legacy, and Holy Blood, Holy Grail, or at least show them the places discussed in detail within those books. The DVD will probably be a fine asset for those currently reading the aforementioned books.

However, it is simply not successful as a stand-alone video or as a video about The Da Vinci Code. The narrator, Mr. Lincoln, takes us through the quaint and beautiful countryside of the Languedoc, home to the Cathar heresy and the Albigensian Crusade, and points out some interesting details in his wandering. Yet he rarely ties the details together into a coherent picture, and often makes comments that would seem to undercut the very idea that he intends to create a coherent picture. As well, he relishes in showing the destruction wrought to many of these mysterious details by treasure hunters and vandals (many inspired, it would seem, by Lincoln's books) and repeatedly editorializes against their actions. I finally fell asleep at around the 90 minute mark---I cannot imagine what else Mr. Lincoln could have found to drone on about for the remaining half hour.

5 out of 5 stars Rennes le chateau.......2005-09-02

If you're at all interested in the Rennes Le Chateau story this is a great travel log. It takes you to through a guided tour of many of the sites in the book. It also visits the sites of Lincoln's other books. If you can't make it to Southern France this is the next best thing. I enjoyed the DVD, but this will only be interesting to someone into this kind of mystery-history. If you've read Holy Blood Holy Grail and haven't been to these sites you'll enjoy this.

Versailles Versailles was the former palace and dream castle of the French 'Sun King', Louis the Fourteenth. The history of Versailles covers the rise and fall of the Bourbons whose reign covered the most remarkable period of French history. Here, the French king lavishly entertained the decadent nobility, oblivious to the unrest caused by their false pride, supreme arrogance and almost total disregard for the poverty of the French people that would eventually lead to Revolution.Magnificent fountains decorate the palace's huge park that was created by 35,000 workers, a hundred hectares of ingenious garden design with a strict symmetry of wide star-shaped garden paths that seem to be without end. Drawn by four horses, the god Apollo emerges from the waters of a fountain. This and further fountains and ponds were designed by Tuby and Lenotre, and are masterpieces of both garden design and the sculptor`s art. Playful figures and statues adorn the park's many paths and even today emanate the joy and merriment of past days. Construction of the royal palace was completed some time after that of the gardens. The palace was to be the epitome of majestic splendour and was designed to accommodate the entire French Court: 20,000 people! Containing more than 700 lavish rooms, the palace is a unique architectural masterpiece. In the opulence of the private rooms there are grand four-poster beds and splendid canopies. Ceiling paintings, gold and marble intarsia, carvings, goblins and superb crystal chandeliers are an indication of some of the king's creative ideas that Lebrun realised in exemplary style. Versailles served as the model for several European palaces such as those in Potsdam, Vienna and St. Petersburg. However, it continues to be a unique monument of unashamed splendour and supreme opulence.
