When three thirtysomething friends with woman troubles (Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn) decide to form a fraternity, it's supposedly to save Wilson from losing his house, which the nearby college is trying to claim for academic purposes. But really, Ferrell and Vaughn are desperate to return to the reckless, feckless days of beer bongs and hot chicks, and they drag Wilson along with them as they throw themselves into gathering frat pledges of all ages. Old School could have been just another string of bad jokes hanging on a flimsy plot, but the script and the cast have a jovial energy and just enough grounding in reality--at least, up until the obligatory beat-the-system ending, but by that point you'll forgive the excesses of this silly, cheerful, and frequently funny movie. Featuring Jeremy Piven and Juliette Lewis, with cameos by Snoop Dog, Andy Dick, and others. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2007-08-15

The funniest movie I've seen in years. I don't usually like "frat boy" humor, but this is the one exception.

3 out of 5 stars Meh..........2007-08-10

Ever watch a movie the first time and laugh so hard your stomach hurts, then watch it again and think...now what was funny about that? Enter, Old School. and there ya go...

4 out of 5 stars C'mon bring your green hat........2007-07-14

Getting to watch Will Farrell and Vince Vaugh start their own fraernity is enough to catch my interest. This is one of my favorite comedy movies and I highly recommend it. What could be funnier then watching Will Farrell stumble around a kids party after being shot in the neck with an animal tranquilizer? And thats only one of the many hilarous parts. It's definately a great one to pop in when you're hanging out with the guys.

4 out of 5 stars All-time classic.......2007-06-27

Old School will go down as an all-time classic comedy! Love Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Ferrell. There wasn't enough Will Ferrell, but that's what made his parts so great. Great movie! A must have for anyones collection.

5 out of 5 stars Animal House? Get outta here.......2007-05-23

Must be 40 yr olds that think animal house is some devine movie, The younger generation such as I(28)know that Old School is waaaaaaayyyyy better! no contest. i've seen both and I personally Think your a dumbass to think animal house even compares to old school, and someone should take your keyboard away and ban you from amazon! Later Losers.

In a futile but ambitiously decadent attempt to revive the loony legacy of National Lampoon comedies, Van Wilder will make you laugh out loud, or vomit, or both. It's that kind of movie, in which the title character (played by sitcom survivor Ryan Reynolds) is the resident slacker of Coolidge College for seven years and running. Enjoying his party-animal supremacy and reluctant to fulfill his potential, he's got an idolizing assistant from India (Kal Penn, the movie's ethnic stereotype, desperate virgin, and comedic highlight), and a journalism major (Tara Reid) assigned to uncover the secret of Van's controlled anarchy. Unfortunately, the movie's more Down to You than Animal House, opting for familiar teen romance over campus shenanigans, despite an abundance of flatulence, diarrhea, sicko sex jokes, gratuitous nudity, and one gag (involving a bulldog) that's disgusting by any standard. Keg-fueled frat-rats will surely elevate Van Wilder to semiclassic status; all others are urged to proceed with caution. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-02-11

A must see. Anyone who's seen Animal House will see the similarity this movie's lead has to "Otter." In fact, Tim Matheson plays a mellowed "Otter" of sorts. It's great for the adult fan of comedies who isn't offended by four-letter words.

5 out of 5 stars What, 1 review?!.......2006-11-27

I cannot believe this classic (well, it will be) movie has one review.

This is the funniest movie I ever seen (unrated version). Austin Powers Goldmember is close, but not quite.

I have watched it at least 15 times over the last 2 years. I laugh at many parts to this day. I think Ryan Reynolds (van wilder himself) had his best role by far in this flick. He has tried to capture the same magic in other movies, but sorry.

I am 38, married and have a 11 year old son. I own my own business and study business and read only non fiction. This movie has a great overall feel as Van is a good hearted guy throughout the movie. He is a good guy in a raunchy movie.

You have a romantic comedy and gross guy flick all in one.

c'mon, 1 review?

4 out of 5 stars Why is this DVD being released?.......2006-10-15

I am looking at the Van Wilder 2 Disc Unrated Version Van Gone Wilder Edition that was released 4 years ago.
The only difference I can see between them is a new cover and less Special Features.

4 out of 5 stars Loved the E'Clair Scene!.......2006-08-03

I just loved this kooky screwy, funny movie, full of hijinx! I think this one beats Animal House for screwball college comedy!

Two hard thumbs WAY up!!!

MC White said: Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest ever! Vile, disgusting funny.. See Unrated!.......2006-07-10

First of all, see the Unrated, and TURN on the UNRATED from the main menu. You will see some of the most beautiful upper female parts you have ever seen. Incredible. Almost worth the price of admission there.

Then we go to the movie itself. Gross out humor like "Something About Mary". Smart humor like "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle". If you like comedy, you really will LOVE this.

When the farmer's back is turned, the animals party down in Barnyard. A young cow named Otis (voiced by Kevin James, The King of Queens) loves to have fun at the farm's wild late-night hoe-downs, despite the disapproval of his father, Ben (Sam Elliott, Thank You for Smoking). When Ben dies defending the barnyard from marauding coyotes, Otis is chosen as the new leader--but responsibility sits uneasily on Otis' head and he fears he may not be able to protect his friends from the coyotes. Barnyard's design of the cows seems inspired by Gary Larson's The Far Side comics; though the style is simple, the characters are surprisingly expressive. From moment to moment, the movie is reasonably entertaining. The actors--including Courteney Cox, Danny Glover, and David Koechner (Anchorman) as a very menacing coyote--do solid voice work and there are plenty of amusing gags. But as Barnyard gallops towards its end, the combination of cliches (the story is a clumsy reworking of The Lion King), odd choices (the male cows have udders), and lackluster dialogue makes the movie sag. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Wild, wacky and "udderly" hilarious, here's a herd of animated pranksters that'll keep you laughing out loud!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Most Entertaining Animated Film I Have Ever Seen .......2007-09-13

I cannot believe how funny, how entertaining this film was, even better than "Cars,' which is an outstanding animated movie. I give it a nod over "Cars" for two reasons: 1 - it's easier to watch being a half-hour shorter at 89 minutes, and 2 - it's even funnier.

This movie, especially in the beginning, provides almost nonstop laughs, the kind that adults would laugh at probably more than kids.. This is adult-funny, but don't misinterpret: there is nothing raunchy in the script. It's not totally innocent, either.

I do wave a "red flag" for small kids. There are a couple of scenes in here that are definitely too scary for little ones. I am referring to a pack of coyotes attacking "Ben," the father character seen early in the movie, and literally killing him. That, and the short funeral scene, are too intense for impressionable kids. Later, the coyotes return a few times, too. Those mothers who complained about their little kids seeing this have a legitimate point.

Nonetheless, for me - and I assume most other adults - the rest of this is pure entertainment, with a little sentiment mixed into the comedy as the main character, "Otis" (voiced by Kevin James) learns to grow up. Otis, however, is one of the funniest characters I have ever seen on film, animated or not. When he and his barnyard pals are partying it up, which is frequently, it's just hilarious. With those parties comes some great music, too. I found myself really into the music, more than on any animated film I have watched (or heard).

And - not only is the music excellent, the visuals are outstanding. The movie is filled with rich, deep colors that are stupendous to view.

Whether you are a teen or a senior citizen, I would think you would get a lot of laughs out of this movie. Some of the best animated films I have ever seen have come out in the past year or two, and I have to believe I'll probably watch this one more times than any of them.

4 out of 5 stars Transgendered Silliness.......2007-09-09

When I saw a trailer for this film I thought I saw something that just could not be so I had to buy it. I was wrong. It was! On a peaceful farm, the animals are more than they seem. When people are asleep they get up on their hind legs, start talking, and generally run things while the humans are asleep. Sam Elliot voiced the father who is the head animal who keep everyone safe and makes sure the humans never learn the truth. Unfortunately his son just wants to party and have fun. Things are pretty good under his reign but what will happen when the son eventually takes over? Well that is just what this story is going to find out.

When the son finds himself in charge he still just wants to have fun and not be responsible. But dangers provided by local coyotes and snotty kids awaken a sense of justice which eventually transmutes into responsibility. But the road is not necessarily an easy one.

So what did I see? Well, Elliot and son (and the guys he hangs out with) are all large-uddered cows! Not bulls. Cows! Eventually two female cows show up in the story (you can tell by the bows on their heads). I loved the story. It was a great coming of age tale and real father/son tale. But the guys are cows and cows are females! In all of the commentaries and actor interviews, no one mentions that the guys in the story have girls bodies. Well, if you can get past this bit of odd biology (my kids know the difference between bulls and cows) then you will see a very good movie. Check it out and ignore the flapping udders.

5 out of 5 stars VERY CLEVER and VERY FUNNY, Sometimes Poignant, Animated Film!.......2007-07-14

Are there some stupidly twisted things in this film? "You Bet!" Is it funny?? MORE "You Bets!"

This is ONE very clever, creative, and totally off the wall "farm film" that will have you on the floor...Trust Me! The levels of humor going on here are wonderful, it is too bad so many people apparently were/are unable to laugh (not only at the world and themselves) but at farm-life, both inside and outside of the barn!!!

It is too bad that people "bash" everything so easily. Yes, udders on a bull, what's wrong with that, for goodness' sake??? This is an ANIMATED film....supposed to be funny,...duh! This is NOT a Life Story, or a Sex Education Film, for Gods' sake...Grow UP, folks! I suppose the same narrow minded people also thought the lady next door with her makeup and curlers wasn't funny either...or the backwards drunkard...too close to home, maybe??? I suppose they did not think cow tipping was funny. And, of course (I forgot to mention) Talking Animals...OMG!

Too bad...they missed all the laughter, and also a WONDERFUL story inside it all, about trying to grow up and be morally responsible...isn't that sad? Check it out for YOURSELF, folks, I think you'll like it. ~operabruin

*PS...there is NOTHING offensive in this movie at all, btw, in case you're wondering.

Description

They're weird, they're wild and they're going totally environmental! Two deadbeat dudes are about to trade beer and pizza for soymilk and tofu in this outrageously funny comedy from the producers of Dumb and Dumber. Before Earth Day 1996, the closest Bud (Pauly Shore) and Doyle (Stephen Baldwin) had ever come to a garbage dump was the floor of their apartment! So when their ecology-conscious girlfriends ask them to stop wasting time and start cleaning waste, the dimwitted duo makes it clear that they'd rather talk trash than pick it up. But their world suddenly changes when they're accidentally trapped inside Bio-Dome a year long scientific ecological experiment with no fast food or cable television! Will Bud and Doyle adapt to their new found habitat or will their very presence spell extinction for themselves, the project and perhaps the entire planet?!

4 out of 5 stars bio dome review.......2007-05-02

The movie, Bio Dome, is a must see. Pauly Shore and Steven Baldwin are the main actors. They play as two frat boys who get trapped in a biological bubble with 5 scientists. It is rated pg13. The movie was released in 1996.

1 out of 5 stars Unfunny..........2007-02-25

I tried watching this on tv one time and couldn't get into it.I've never been a fan of Pauly Shore.I've always thought he was very grating and very annoying and couldn't act.I could see that they were trying to be funny, but it just didn't work.I thought the relationship between him and Stephen Baldwin bordered on homosexuality, which seemed kind of weird and wondered, why would the 2 girls be interested in these 2 in the first place?? I'm sure there are other Pauly Shore movies that are way better than this one,but I doubt it.I guess you have to be a certain age and mentality to enjoy this.He never did do anything beyond his "weasel" persona, like Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey did with their career.I guess he didn't have the talent to pursue anything else and so he faded into oblivion, which seemed that nobody else missed him.I mean,is anyone out there waiting and wanting a comeback from Pauly Shore? No,there isn't.If you like sub-mental movies, then try this one,but you're missing a whole lot of better quality and better written movies done by people who know what they're doing...If you want to see a movie where Stephen Baldwin doesn't embarrass himself, then try THE USUAL SUSPECTS.Otherwise, stay away from this completely!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Keep on going, buddy, keep on going down the line...".......2006-10-20

"Ahoy Noah, Your looking kind o' grizzly..."
"No, I am god..."
This is obviously an important flick, with over 100 reviews on Amazon. Most rave, a few bash -- almost none in the middle. It could be mindset, maybe political bent. But I feel sorry for those who cannot appreciate this little gem, an outrageously hilarious, quotable romp with a message! Yes, maybe the message is mixed with fart and stoner humor, but Bud and Doyle (the Frog and the Squirrel) who "own this place, total!" really grow and realize that they have "made Vasquez lake" and "have to fix it". They are not some "shaved down pool Nazis" they want to "free the Mahi-mahi, if you will..." and they go from guys who "can't cork it (negatory)" wanting to "pee in your Jurassic mall" to rejects even within the closed world of the Biodome: "I'm going to start my own dome, like a dome within a dome... so don't come knocking on my door!..." To formulating a plan to fight back after Doyle single-handedly and in one (mouth filled with Pizza) sentence "Don't give me any of that bourgeois/smourgeois -- gimme the drink, gimme the drink..." wins back his Photocopier-employed friend to make the flyers: "Have a beer with a deer..."

A better environmental piece than even Koyaanisqatsi. Almost as much fun as "Dancing. Naked. Want us to take of all our clothes, feed us some weird punch..."

I disagree that it's not right for kids. I think they should show it in the schools. (Current music is much more suggestive.) And my kids have watched it (with supervision) since an early age. We quote it all the time to each other a crack up. It is an endless source of family humor. we have watched it dozens of times together. Just a really great flick all around. I would give it six stars if I could.

So all I can say to the inimitable Pauly Shore is "Thank you Naomi!"

Of which I FF to. But as a movie? The show doesn't hold much interest. A movie like "Asian and Indian guy goes to White Castle" (I don't recall their names but if you've seen it you'll know) gives you a cohesive journey to enjoy. Van Wilder tries to update "Animal House" but fails by putting too much upon one character to hold it up.

3 out of 5 stars High bitrate AVC encode ---> Marginal picture quality.......2007-08-26

First of all, I loved the movie. The audio is spectacular, the video marginal. They used an AVC encode that is always over 30Mbps which should yield a top-tier image. Unfortunately the result is less than spectacular.

Buy it if you like the movie. Skip it if you already have the DVD.

First of all, see the Unrated, and TURN on the UNRATED from the main menu. You will see some of the most beautiful upper female parts you have ever seen. Incredible. Almost worth the price of admission there.

Then we go to the movie itself. Gross out humor like "Something About Mary". Smart humor like "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle". If you like comedy, you really will LOVE this.

Get ready for the raucous, unrated version of National Lampoon's Pledge This! starring Paris Hilton and Paula Garces (Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle). A group of freshman female misfits will do anything to get into the Gamma, Gamma Sorority but first they'll have to impress Gamma president Victoria (Paris Hilton) . Soon it's all out class warfare between these pledges and the beautiful "it" girls who rule the sorority scene. It's a hilarious comedy in the over-the-top tradition of the Old School and Van Wilder comedies.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Downright awful!.......2007-08-15

This movie was so bad that I turned it off within the first 15 to 20 minutes. Paris Hilton in a National Lampoon's movie? The National Lampoon's franchise must be ashamed. Paris Hilton pretty much plays herself in this movie which tells you how self indulgent she is of herself. And the married woman with the cheating husband was obnoxious and I couldn't even laugh at her once. But I didn't rent this movie to see either of those two. I rented it so I could see Paula Garces. But not even she could save this disaster of a film. This has to be one of the stupidest movies I have ever seen. It makes Date Movie look like Citizen Kane which tells you how stupid this movie is. If I were you, avoid this movie big time. It's not worth the time or money to watch!

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money.......2007-07-23

Has to be one of the worst movies ever made. Nothing worth viewing here. I would give it zero stars if possible.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid This.......2007-05-29

In "National Lampoon's Pledge This!" Paris Hilton is "Victoria English," president of South Beach University's fiercely exclusive sorority "Gamma Gamma." Everyone adores her, worships her and wants to be accepted by her, and everyone wants to be like her ... are you still listening?

Reese Witherspoon might have this uninspired story watchiable with her comedic talent. Sorry, no such luck here because Ms. Witherspoon was not available. Instead you see Paris Hilton doing nothing particularly great, except gliding around the campus in expensive dress or saying something silly smugly. Actually she does nothing even during the film's pie-throwing scenes (yes, there is!) because no pie hits her.

There are toilet jokes (about school toilet "eating" a poor girl, and ... er ... about one exploding toilet, no, I'm not kidding) and of course, lots of nudities. But there is more to come after these gross-out gags and the film gets worse. A group of freshmen arrive, mostly stereotyped "outcasts" or "misfits" and they have to undergo humiliating "initiation" in order to be member of the sorority. This part is not just unfunny, but repulsive.

Finally I didn't write the names of co-stars and cameos because most probably they want to forget anything about it all and must have already deleted the name of the film from their CV by now. So please, listen, here is my advice; Avoid this.

1 out of 5 stars Consider only if you can get a dollar rental.......2007-05-09

I rented this movie from a video machine at our local grocery for a dollar. Had I rented it from a movie store for $4, I would have felt cheated. This is a dumb movie and not very funny. It is hard to believe so many reviewers are giving it 3 and 4 stars. When I think of National Lampoon, I think of Animal House and Vacation. This movie is not in the same league or even close. It seems this movie was written for Paris Hilton, as the charater she plays is a carbon copy of her in real life. Maybe die hard Paris Hilton fans will find more to appreciate than I did.

1 out of 5 stars I dont Hate Paris Hilton, But after this movie I might.......2007-04-29

PARIS PARIS PARIS, where do I begin

I know you are a lil rich kid, who is trying to make it as a media star, you know TV seroes, record deal, pin ups. and movies...and your choice are farely great to highlight you...However, this movie is a step back for even you.

This National Lampoon film is neither an ANIMAL HOUSE nor a VACATION. It is real weak film versions of the American Pie series combined with Bring it On and Legally Blonde films without the cheerleading. John Waters could have made a better film in his sleep..and I think he has!

The plot is confusing story line. Also with 30 year old adults trying to play college cut ups, it seems like these "KIDS" seem too old to do some of this CRAZY STUFF.

Their sight gags may make anyone gag. The pie scene steals from ANIMAL HOUSE's & Blazing Saddles's food fight and old three stooges movies..and Paris, you get not a drop of pie on you (AMAZING since you are inthe middle of the tossing)

The one star is for the star of the film, Ms Hilton...who is her screen time makes herself seen. It does not always advance the plot much, but she is beautiful to watch.

It's definately a great one to pop in when you're hanging out with the guys.

Any serious lover of film eventually (if not immediately) succumbs to the genius of Luis Bunuel. The bottomless wit and unsentimental clear-sightedness of the Spanish master is evident throughout his career, but Bunuel has the added bonus of never tapering off, never losing his edge. The Phantom of Liberty was produced when Bunuel was in his mid-70s, and it's as hilariously impertinent as anything he ever made. Along with his (and anybody's) key collaborator Jean-Claude Carriere, Bunuel strings together a series of reverse-logic dreams and surrealist blackouts, which flow from one to another without building into anything like a conventional storyline.

A nurse at an inn is sidetracked by a foursome of poker-playing priests, while an S&M couple down the hall invite everyone to their room for a drink and a show; a sit-down party has guests seated on toilets around a table; a police commissioner receives a phone call from his dead sister. None of it makes sense, except that it makes absolute sense. By the time a little girl is reported missing by her frantic parents, despite the fact that she is manifestly with them in schoolroom and police station, the film has entered the zone where comedy and unnerving observations come together in a perfect way. Many top European actors participate in this exercise, including Michel Piccoli, Monica Vitti, Jean Rochefort, and Jean-Claude Brialy. Perhaps the format limits the film from gaining the resonance of latter Bunuel films such as The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie or That Obscure Object of Desire, but it's a marvelous surrealist variety show. --Robert Horton

Description

Bourgeois convention is demolished in Luis Bu±uel's surrealist gem The Phantom of Liberty. Featuring an elegant soir#e with guests seated at toilet bowls, poker-playing monks using religious medals as chips, and police officers looking for a missing girl who is right under their noses, this perverse, playfully absurd comedy of nonsequiturs deftly compiles many of the themes that preoccupied Bu±uel throughout his career-from the hypocrisy of conventional morality to the arbitrariness of social arrangements.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ostrich..........2007-09-09

This film is my favorite of Bunuel's work. It's similar to a full length Monty Python episode, except it's in French, and the women are much better looking. It's very funny, surreal (of course), and strange, yet it makes a great deal of sense. The scene where people defecate in public and eat in private is hilarious, the scene where the priest gives children normal cards to play with, but the adults think they're pornographic is great too. The monks playing poker is quite a vivid image as well. Does this all make sense? Of course it does. All of Bunuel's films make sense in their own way. The final shot of an ostrich is a great way to end this film. I remember showing Bunuel's final film, That Obscure Object of Desire, to my sister, and as open minded as she is, she hated the film and the ending. She probably would have hated the ostrich ending in this one. For those who think Richard Linklater's Slacker was great should watch this film. The story structure (such as it is) of Slacker is exactly like the one here. Slacker is a good film, but The Phantom of Liberty is far superior. I love later Bunuel. This film, Discreet Charm, and Viridiana are my favorite Bunuel films...

5 out of 5 stars "On a flimsy ground of reality, imagination spins out and waves new patterns.".......2007-03-16

This excellent collection of satirical vignettes is my kind of movie - crazy, dark and comical, it goes any direction it wants and does not follow any rules. When we try to grasp for the meaning, it is like a ghost, a phantom that "leaves us with a wisp of vapor in our hands" and disappears - very much like the liberty, the freedom the humans try to find but instead could only see its phantom disappearing. The film follows many characters on its way shifting effortlessly and playfully from the central ones to the minor ones making minor ones the central and going back and forth from one time period to another. It opens in Toledo during the Napoleonic occupation then jumps to the modern day Paris. It could've gone anywhere and introduced me to any character - it still would've been enormously interesting because it was made by the master who had never lost his curiosity, his inquisitive mind, his memory that consisted of the strange and amazing images, his sense of humor, his childhood dreams, his fantasies, dark and shining and who was able to throw them all on the screen like no one ever was able or will be able to do. To understand Bunuel completely would be as impossible as to catch the Phantom of Liberty - he will be always one of the best and unsolved mysteries in the Art of Cinema.

4 out of 5 stars Spectre of Marx.......2007-01-30

Harpo, Chico and Groucho, that is, more than Karl. Amusing and entertaining through and through, but not the pinnacle of Bunuel, which, in my eyes, is Tristana. But I've only seen 6 or 7 of his films. The extra feature, The Celebration of Chance, is invaluable. Bunuel's works are greatly helped by the commentaries of Jean-Claude Carriere. Carriere remarks that the title is an allusion to Marx. The truth is that the pursuit of liberty (or the idea that it can ever be attained) is, and has to be, illusory; and the movie medium actually accentuates the doomed nature of the search. No matter how much you twist and turn, invert the world, run counter to convention and reverse reality, the prison which fetters human perceptions can never be escaped. This is not exactly new. In fact there is a passage in one of Lewis Carroll's lesser known works, where the crowd shouts something like: Longer hours! Worse pay! Illogic has always had its adherents, and the non-sequitur has been known for centuries. Bunuel enjoyed the freedom in this film to do exactly what he wanted, and in one sense it is an expression of the fact that even with this freedom, to ignore plot, character development, cause and effect, the movie-maker is still constrained --- by something. The wish to produce a work of art, perhaps? Taken to its absurd extreme, the artist would end up in total solitude creating a work which he instantly destroys. The film has to be seen, however, and the one star has only been removed by a personal desire to be perverse. Wonderful cinematography, perfect performances, superb scenes and dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars The transposition and breakthrough of the reality may become an awful nightmare!.......2005-12-30

What would it happen if you break the neck to logic, conventional social principles set out of context and play with the sense of the words meaning? What if you bet to exchange certain components of our quotidian way of thinking, becoming a messy puzzle? How amount of truth are you able to bear?

That far premise that enlightened the mind of Luis Buñuel in The exterminating angel, reappears with major vigor, irreverence and petulance. This genial Spanish filmmaker simply disorders the rules that govern our real world through dreamy, cynical and surrealistic vignettes, where the Status Quo can be demolished with a simple lash of fingers. Costumes, moral, ancestral codes, elemental logic, pattern behaviors are broken with impeccable cold blood, perhaps to intend us to convince us we can live another different world , just rearranging the basis that support the enormous building of our normal behavior.

The initial shot comes from a Goya painting and finalizes with the astonishing feared ostrich trying to hide from us in the zoo.

Knowing the heavy burden of surrealism that always accompanied Don Luis, and being perhaps the lonely Ambassador in the Sixties of that discolored flag, many elements might escape your solid and logic perception, just turn around it and think it over.

A glorious imagination ` s triumph.

5 out of 5 stars Exhilarating satirical surrealist show from Luis Buñuel.......2005-10-02

I'm told by fellow film enthusiasts that Buñuel's later films do not show this Spanish master at his best, that his earliest films---his famous collaborations with Salvador Dalí, for instance---show an edgier, more fascinating Buñuel. Whatever. I saw his 1974 film THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY for the first time recently, and I immediately fell in love with it. There are those who swear by his more popular 1972 Oscar-winner THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE, but somehow I think THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY is even more entertaining than DISCREET CHARM.

There is no plot to speak of in PHANTOM: this film is basically a collection of surrealist sketches that finds Buñuel playing with all kinds of different ideas and different images. Monks pray for a woman's sick father, and then play poker with the woman and smoke. A group of people sit around a dinner table on toilets, and go to the bathroom to eat in private. Two parents desperately try to find their missing daughter---even though she's right there in class when they call her name. In the universe Buñuel concocts in THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY, anything goes.

The amazing thing about this movie is that, instead of seeming like an irrational series of surrealistic sketches, THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY has a broad theme to support its free-form structure: it's Buñuel's comic vision of freedom run amuck. Sure, the idea of liberty is appealing to everyone...but, as Buñuel seems to be suggesting, even freedom has its limits. The opening scene of the movie is set in Toledo, Spain in 1808, as Napoleon's troops attempt to liberate the Spanish and are greeted with cries of "Down with liberty!" There can be times when we want the assurance of authority, rather than the freedom to act in whatever way we please.

Buñuel doesn't take a stand one way or the other, really; he's just an artist who is intrigued by the idea, and his interest fuels the free-form structure of the film, and its content. Almost anything and everything he can think of---within the bounds, I suppose, of the same themes he covered throughout his long and illustrious film career---is thrown into this movie, and while some viewers may perhaps prefer the comfort of a movie with some structure, I found its elegant chaos exhilarating.

Only a master filmmaker who had absolute confidence in what he was doing would dare make a movie like this. I think Buñuel pulls it off triumphantly here; somehow, he makes the movie seem almost logical, the way it progresses. THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY is a sheer delight. Highly recommended.
