Curly's Last Hurrah.......2006-07-11
Not one of the better Stooges tapes.......2003-03-27
UNCIVIL WARBIRDS (1946)
The stooges are in love with the girls but they ended up going to the Civil War, Curly is on the oppisite team from Moe and Larry and this short marked the last time when Curly did the shoulder spin and the Curly shuffle, although he was sick around that time, he gives a good but not great performance, especially when compared to Bird in the Head, Three Loan Wolves and Half Wits Holiday.
BACK TO THE WOODS (1937)
The boys are lawbreakers in England and they are sent to America to fight the Indians and the short doesn't start good till the indian fight scenes, one of the stooges weakest shorts of all time.
Interesting collection........2002-05-03
THREE LITTLE UNCIVIL PIRATES IN THE WOODS.......2001-07-04
UNCIVIL WAR BIRDS (1946) - Not a bad short. Interesting casting the boys during the Civil War. The title could've been better. Too similar to 1935's UNCIVIL WARRIORS.
BACK TO THE WOODS (1937) - This one is very slow. The first half really drags and the musical box sequence goes on WAY too long. It picks up a little in the second half with the Indian chase. That is, until they got lazy at the very end and reused footage from WHOOPS, I'M AN INDIAN. Weak move. Weak short.
Decent tape. Notice that all the shorts shown had the Stooges in a different time period?
Not a bad tape.......2001-03-04
This short, despite Curly's illness, was one of the better entries in the series, and one of the best made by director Ed Bernds. Curly's higher energy level (compared to the other shorts made around this time) and hilarious routines (in particular the "Maharaja" sequence, make this a relatively easy film to watch.
"Uncivil Warbirds" (1946) has the Stooges cast as three brothers trying to enlist in the army to fight in the Civil War. Unfortunately, they can't decide which side they're fighting for, and end up switching uniforms repeatedly.
Like a lot of Jules White films, the plot is fairly weak and the routines are on the tedious side, but it's a significant short to watch since it's the last time on screen Curly does the "Shoulder-spin" and the famous "Curly Shuffle." It's obvious Curly was feeling more up to par when they made this one.
"Back to the Woods" (1937) has the Stooges cast as pilgrims sent to the American colonies to help defend against the "Redskin Savage." Taking pity on their starving fellows, they go out to hunt and fish to feed the colonists and run afoul a tribe of Indians.
This one's a coin-toss. Curly was in his prime in this short, and the music-box scene is a scream. However, like a lot of Jules White shorts, there is a lot of racist humor and the plot is minimal. The ending sequence (another Jules White ploy) was footage taken from "Whoops, I'm an Indian" (1936). Overlook the fake Indians and the racist comments, and it's not a bad short.

"Three Arabian Nuts" (1951, short number 129 in the Columbia series) offers a fairly rare element of the supernatural. While the boys are working on a shipment of mostly breakable (and therefore broken) goods from the East for a client (Vernon Dent), Shemp runs across a magic lamp with a real "genius" that grants him his wish of flashy clothing, a gift immediately unwished by a jealous Larry. A good deal of the footage is concerned with two angry Arabs trying to decapitate the infidels. For once, all ends well with the boys getting their wishes fulfilled and Dent (who had given away the lamp) being given a rare chance to stooge an ending all by himself."Sing a Song of Sixpence" (1947, number 102) has the boys operating a tailor shop in which a criminal on the lam hides and poses as a tailor's dummy while they strip him down to make a sale. There is the usual series of gags with the cleaning and pressing equipment, including the ray of sunlight on a garment that is mistaken for a spot.
"All Gummed Up" (1947, number 103) will show up again almost in its entirety as "Bubble Trouble" in 1953. Here beautiful Christine McIntyre gets a chance to be really comic as she plays an old wife transformed into a young one, while Emil Sitka does a great turn as her inconsiderate, doddering husband. The mixing of the "youth potion" involves the usual Three Stooges doubletalk but done well in this context. The last fourth of this film should be compared with that of the remake, which is also available in the Columbia collection, titled "Listen, Judge." --Frank Behrens

Great collection........2002-04-07
SING A SONG OF SIX PANTS (1947)- Finally, this short is released by Columbia instead of other low-budget companies. The quality is far better than those cheap tapes that are extremely bad quality. This is a great short. A Stooge classic. This could be one of the more violent Stooge shorts, but I think it's okay.
ALL GUMMED UP (1947)- Great short. I've always particularly liked the end gag where gum is mistaken for marshmallows. The Stooges and Christine McIntrye all eat a cake with bubble gum on it. Soon, all four of them are blowing bubbles. I recommend this.
A great Three Stooges tape, well worth adding to your collection.
