... was not when I saw the 3 Stooges 50 years ago (I didn't know a thing about them at this time), but when I realized I was sharing a planet where (not so human) living beings could get entertainment from garbage only fit for braindeads finding usual TV crap too much intellectual and lacking excessive vulgarity. To watch this as some study experiment might be understandable, to enjoy it should be subjected to institutionalization.

Luckily, pistol-packing Annie Oakley (Kovak), who has fallen in love with the handsome editor, agrees to protect them against the bad guys.

        2 out of 5 stars Who's the Stooge?.......2006-12-27

I must say I was fairly disappointed with the DVD collection. Whoever made the cover for this should be willing to buy back every volume because of the misleading advertising. Moe, Larry and Curly are pictured on the cover and under their picture it says, "starring Moe Howard, Lary Fine, Curly Howard and Shemp Howard. So, you would think this was a pretty good mix of Stooges classics...wrong! Curly was nowhere to be seen on any of the DVD's. It's not that I'm opposed to Shemp, but 30+ episodes and no Curly. That is just too much. They even had the nerve to include 2 episodes with Joe. If you were not going to include Curly, then don't put his picture or his name on the cover. Other than that, the shows are great and the digital quality isn't bad on most shorts. But I do feel like a real knucklehead.

1 out of 5 stars Be wary and read this ad carefully........2006-11-17

Talk about slight of hand advertising...It is an impossibility that the 40 dvd set sells for only $35, yet the 40 dvd set is advertised in bold lettering in the main title description. If you read further, you see that it is in fact only volume 5, which makes more sense. Why the ruse? All of the other volumes are described correctly so why, instead of indicating volume 5, the header, in boldface reads:

THE THREE STOOGES-40 DVD SET-192 EPISODES

Just read this ad carefully so you realize what you are actually paying for.

5 stars for the volume but 1 star posted to draw attention to the false header.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best episodes.......2005-02-20

          This DVD contains three episodes:

          1. Disorder in the Court -- the stooges are called as witnesses in the court, to testify regarding the murder of a man in a club in which they were performing as musicians. Not one of their best.

          2. Brideless Groom -- Shemp appears in this one. He has to marry a girl within 4 hours in order to inherit half a million dollars. Tries madly to find one, and then a big goofy fight ensues. A little better than the first episode.

          3. Malice in the Palace -- The best of the bunch. A classic episode, featuring diamond thieves, cooking mishaps, and such. As goofy as the rest, but a little more clever--classic Stooges.

The recording quality is good. Digiview seems to make decent DVDs for cheap. Sometimes they take out the original music, however. Watch out for that with them.

          3 out of 5 stars Curly's Last Hurrah.......2006-07-11

"Three Little Pirates" (1946) makes this particular Stooge compilation worth having. Despite ill health, Curly delivers his last classic performance -- highlighted by the famous "Maha-Aha" routine. The remaining shorts pale by comparison. "Uncivil Warbirds" (1946) is a dreadful Civil War spoof with no laughs. However, "Back to the Woods" (1937) has Moe, Larry and Curly gaining extra comic mileage from decidedly thin material. The overall print quality is good, but Columbia should have provided a decent 35mm master of "Three Little Pirates."

4 out of 5 stars Not one of the better Stooges tapes.......2003-03-27

Man I've been a stooges fan since I was 12 years old and I am still to this day.
          THREE LITTLE PIRATES (1946)
One of the best stooge shorts even though Curly was ill during the time but he gives his last great performance and the Majah routine is a routine, but the stooges next short is when Curly suffers a major stroke, the best short on this tape.

          UNCIVIL WARBIRDS (1946)
The stooges are in love with the girls but they ended up going to the Civil War, Curly is on the oppisite team from Moe and Larry and this short marked the last time when Curly did the shoulder spin and the Curly shuffle, although he was sick around that time, he gives a good but not great performance, especially when compared to Bird in the Head, Three Loan Wolves and Half Wits Holiday.

          BACK TO THE WOODS (1937)
The boys are lawbreakers in England and they are sent to America to fight the Indians and the short doesn't start good till the indian fight scenes, one of the stooges weakest shorts of all time.

          3 out of 5 stars Interesting collection........2002-05-03

This is a pretty good tape, with two good shorts, to one bad one. THREE LITTLE PIRATES, great short, and the best of these three. Curly was sick at the time, and here he gives his last great performance. Curly has a serious stroke on the set of the next short, HALF-WITS HOLIDAY. UNCIVIL WARBIRDS: A pretty good short. Again, Curly is sick at the time. The title, however, is too similar to UNCIVIL WARRIORS. BACK TO THE WOODS is a bomb. Too slow. The other two shorts here are okay, though.

3 out of 5 stars THREE LITTLE UNCIVIL PIRATES IN THE WOODS.......2001-07-04

THREE LITTLE PIRATES (1946) - A great short. Well written and directed, and the real highlight is Curly - despite his health at the time, he gives in one of his best performances, and he's pure gold during the classic "Maha" scene.

UNCIVIL WAR BIRDS (1946) - Not a bad short. Interesting casting the boys during the Civil War. The title could've been better. Too similar to 1935's UNCIVIL WARRIORS.

BACK TO THE WOODS (1937) - This one is very slow. The first half really drags and the musical box sequence goes on WAY too long. It picks up a little in the second half with the Indian chase. That is, until they got lazy at the very end and reused footage from WHOOPS, I'M AN INDIAN. Weak move. Weak short.

Decent tape. Notice that all the shorts shown had the Stooges in a different time period?

          4 out of 5 stars Not a bad tape.......2001-03-04

In "Three Little Pirates" (1946), the boys are sailors captured and held captive by the evil governor (Vernon Dent) of Dead Man's Island. With the help of Rita (Christine McIntyre), they escape and make it to Black Louie's tavern. There, Curly is entered into a knife-throwing contest during which the Stooges end up fighting a band of pirates. They win the day and take their leave.

This short, despite Curly's illness, was one of the better entries in the series, and one of the best made by director Ed Bernds. Curly's higher energy level (compared to the other shorts made around this time) and hilarious routines (in particular the "Maharaja" sequence, make this a relatively easy film to watch.

"Uncivil Warbirds" (1946) has the Stooges cast as three brothers trying to enlist in the army to fight in the Civil War. Unfortunately, they can't decide which side they're fighting for, and end up switching uniforms repeatedly.

Like a lot of Jules White films, the plot is fairly weak and the routines are on the tedious side, but it's a significant short to watch since it's the last time on screen Curly does the "Shoulder-spin" and the famous "Curly Shuffle." It's obvious Curly was feeling more up to par when they made this one.

"Back to the Woods" (1937) has the Stooges cast as pilgrims sent to the American colonies to help defend against the "Redskin Savage." Taking pity on their starving fellows, they go out to hunt and fish to feed the colonists and run afoul a tribe of Indians.

This one's a coin-toss. Curly was in his prime in this short, and the music-box scene is a scream. However, like a lot of Jules White shorts, there is a lot of racist humor and the plot is minimal. The ending sequence (another Jules White ploy) was footage taken from "Whoops, I'm an Indian" (1936). Overlook the fake Indians and the racist comments, and it's not a bad short.

"Three Arabian Nuts" (1951, short number 129 in the Columbia series) offers a fairly rare element of the supernatural. While the boys are working on a shipment of mostly breakable (and therefore broken) goods from the East for a client (Vernon Dent), Shemp runs across a magic lamp with a real "genius" that grants him his wish of flashy clothing, a gift immediately unwished by a jealous Larry. A good deal of the footage is concerned with two angry Arabs trying to decapitate the infidels. For once, all ends well with the boys getting their wishes fulfilled and Dent (who had given away the lamp) being given a rare chance to stooge an ending all by himself.

"Sing a Song of Sixpence" (1947, number 102) has the boys operating a tailor shop in which a criminal on the lam hides and poses as a tailor's dummy while they strip him down to make a sale. There is the usual series of gags with the cleaning and pressing equipment, including the ray of sunlight on a garment that is mistaken for a spot.

"All Gummed Up" (1947, number 103) will show up again almost in its entirety as "Bubble Trouble" in 1953. Here beautiful Christine McIntyre gets a chance to be really comic as she plays an old wife transformed into a young one, while Emil Sitka does a great turn as her inconsiderate, doddering husband. The mixing of the "youth potion" involves the usual Three Stooges doubletalk but done well in this context. The last fourth of this film should be compared with that of the remake, which is also available in the Columbia collection, titled "Listen, Judge." --Frank Behrens

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Great collection........2002-04-07

THREE ARABIAN NUTS (1951)- An excellent Three Stooges short. The best of these three. The Stooges seem to break more things than ever in this short. Vernon Dent is good in his role here. Moe does particularly well here. I recommend this.

SING A SONG OF SIX PANTS (1947)- Finally, this short is released by Columbia instead of other low-budget companies. The quality is far better than those cheap tapes that are extremely bad quality. This is a great short. A Stooge classic. This could be one of the more violent Stooge shorts, but I think it's okay.

ALL GUMMED UP (1947)- Great short. I've always particularly liked the end gag where gum is mistaken for marshmallows. The Stooges and Christine McIntrye all eat a cake with bubble gum on it. Soon, all four of them are blowing bubbles. I recommend this.

A great Three Stooges tape, well worth adding to your collection.

          5 out of 5 stars Classic Stooges.......1999-10-13
