Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars :).......2007-02-14

This movie makes you feel like you're watching a live-action cartoon :) Yahoo's character, Roger Crumpkin, and Helen Dallimore- as "Sunday Valentine"- are both really loveable characters. You want to see them "live happily ever after". They both have unusual quirks, which add to their likeability-
and never quite seem to "fit in" with traditional society & it's way of love, dress, behavior. It is a delightful story and a story we all know, but done in a very unusual and creative way, you could easily say this story is like a FABLE.

I've never seen a more adorable couple in a movie, two people who compliment eachother so well- Roger takes things apart, She fixes things & puts-em back together. :)Both have a child-like optimism. There are little quirky things throughout the movie that make it really fun and unusual.

This movie also, in a comical way, deals with the issue of tobacco addiction, and pokes fun at the tobacco industry & at it victims.
It pokes fun at the whole "Bar scene" - something I can totally relate to, for I do not like the bar scene myself.
Sunday Valentine dresses like she came right out of a Japanese "Fruits" magazine, in Harajuku- Japan! :)
I love their facial expressions and looks of suprise too, very physical comedy.
I found this film absolutely charming and hilarious- my favorite of Yahoo's films so far. I hope he will make more someday, his humor style is unique and at times bizzare.

5 out of 5 stars A good movie if you dont want to think.......2006-07-14

this movie is supposed to be FUN not an oscar nominee. Make sure to keep in mind while watching it that yes it is over the top and "out there" but that is how its meant to be. The constumes are bright and the props and scenery pop out at you its a flashy funny movie and I think anyone with a sense of humor should give it a try.

1 out of 5 stars Not one of Australias, but one if the ALL TIME WORST MOVIES.......2004-06-27

Yahoo Serios made a name for himself when he made the classic Australian comedy "Young Einstein" then he slipped a little, but not completly with "Reckless Kelly". Both those movies gave Yahoo Serious a well placed name in Australian movie making.

Then comes out with this garbage. I was anxious to see this, and made up an excuse to take my nefue and neice to see this movie. And during the entire movie I can testify that I only made the smallest, un-heard "ha" once during the entire film!

I remember walking out thinking that that was one of the worst films ever, how it got made I can only guess is that the studio saw Yahoo's name and figured it would probably be as good as his last 2, but what suprises me more is I havent seen it on any top 100 Worst movies of all time lists. So let me be the first to say , it's in my top 20 worst movies of all time.

The movie was pathetic, the story had been done a million times before, oh, I got the humour, it just wasnt funny, the out-takes where not at all funny, and most of the time out-takes during the credits are what people stay to watch and laugh at, I was already walking out by that time, the kids wanted to watch them, but nope, still nothing funny at all!

If Yahoo ever releases his great comedy "Young Einstein" on DVD? I Recomend you check that out. Its a great comedy that is one of Australias best ever. If he releases "Reckless Kelly" then that one would be OK, but if you have no knowedge of who the real Ned Kelly is? you probably wouldnt get it at all.. but avoid this god awful movie. You dont see many reviews here on it, I wasnt even going to waste my time reveiwing it, but I felt it needed to be said that it is one of the worst movies of all time. well, worst attempts at comedy anyway. Even tho I went "ha" for as long as it took you to read that one time during the film, even the kids themselves only laughed about 5 times.

If Yahoo is going to make another movie after this, then he has some serious thinking to do before he makes it, every reveiw in the country at the time gave it a 1 star vote. I wish I had of taken there reveiws as right, for once in my life! Not many times to I see reveiws written and fully agree with them, but I did on this movie, its a 1 star, pethetic attempt from Yahoo who slipped into a deep dark hole with this un-original, seen it before, pethetic attempt at a comedy - he should have stuck to that formula he was doing with fammiluer charactors like in his previous films and re-aranged it to an almost parody like atmosphere which made them funny. This movie had none of that, and failed big time, it flopped in theatres, it flopped in the rentals, and every single reveiw never gave it more then 1 and a half stars, and the ones he gave it a half star more then it deserved are just beeing too kind to Yahoo Serious.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2003-12-10

Well, young Ryan Abshire, sometimes the best humor goes on when you're thinking like a five year old. You must not like funny movies then, if you didn't enjoy Going Overboard.
Yahoo Serious is a genius.

"I hardboiled myself a six-pack and I'd like you to have it."

This movie is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. If you don't like it, I suggest you dip yourself in salt and launch yourself into a pit of male horses, and see if you find that humorous. If not, you might just be sane.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: Do not eat while watching this movie.......2003-08-27

You might choke from laughing so hard. This is a SCREAMINGLY funny movie. The screenplay is funny, the dialogue is funny, the characters are hilarious, even the sets and costumes are funny. You'll never look at eggs (or hub caps) the same way again. I got a pain from laughing. Yahoo Serious makes seriously funny films. If you haven't seen "Reckless Kelly" and "Young Einstein" get them too. As usual in a Yahoo Serious movie he is MUCH prettier than his leading lady. Bring along your sense of the absurd and you'll love this.

I bought this film based on a documentary I saw about cinematographer John Alton. He was described as the godfather of the the film noir cinematography and that made me buy all the John Alton DVD's on Amazon available. His way of filming was so revolutionary that even today his way of filming is the handbook for all students in cinematography. The storyline of this film is simple but the new angles in filming and his superb use of light and dark contrast makes this film very interesting even when it is a film which isn't digitally restored yet !

4 out of 5 stars Forgotten Thriller That Deserves To Be Better Remembered. .......2006-08-06

Once again the good people at Image DVD have brought back to life another forgotten gem in the thriller genre that while being not well known is indeed well worth the time. Starring one of my absolute favourite "B" movie villians in talented actor Turhan Bey, who was wonderful as the evil High Priest in 1942's "The Mummy's Tomb"; "The Amazing Mr. X", weaves an intriguing tale of supernatural deception heightened by Bey's assured playing that is really hard to resist. Apart from the strong central performances this admittedly second string production also boasts amazingly high standard cinematography and special effects which give this film a polished "noir", look to it that greatly increases its appeal.

4 out of 5 stars "He did a lot of crazy things...some of the bad...".......2006-07-24

The problem with the deceased, you see, is sometimes they don't know, don't believe, or don't care that they're dead, which can cause complications for those of us still shuffling about on this mortal as they tend to hang about making nuisances of themselves, as seen in the film The Amazing Mr. X (1948). Directed by Bernard Vorhaus (The Last Journey, The Courageous Dr. Christian), the film stars Turhan Bey (The Mad Ghoul, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves), Richard Carlson (It Came from Outer Space, Creature from the Black Lagoon), and Lynn Bari (Charlie Chan in City in Darkness, Kit Carson), appearing in a role originally intended for actress Carole Landis, that is before she took her own life just prior to filming. Also appearing is Cathy O'Donnell (Detective Story) and Donald Curtis (Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo).

The film begins with a shot of a lonely mansion perched atop a precarious coast, one occupied by widower Christine Faber (Bari) and her younger sister Janet Burke (Cathy O'Donnell), whom, I might add, are a real pair of classy dames. As Christine is preparing for a date with her boyfriend Martin Abbott (Carlson), she hears a man's voice furtively wafting in from the ocean, calling her name...'Chistiiine...Christiine...', sounding a lot like that of her dead husband Paul, whose been gone for two years. She relates this to Janet, but the pair eventually dismisses it as the wind, and Janet prods Christine to get ready for her date, as it seems this is the night Martin's going to pop the question. As Christine makes her way along the darkened beach to Martin's house, again she hears the voice, just before a `chance' meeting with odd individual named Alexis (Bey), who turns out to be a psychic consultant and relates things to Christine he couldn't possibly know, unless he truly had supernatural abilities (or a really good investigative source). Anyway, after a harrowing experience of the supernatural kind later that night, Christine enlists Alexis to perform series of séances (much to the dismay of Martin and Janet) as she feels Paul is lingering about (I guess he missed the whole bit about `until death do us part' bit during the vows). Martin and Janet, fearing Alexis is a fake and only after money, hire a private detective to look into Alexis' past, the hope being to show Christine once and for all the man is nothing but a scam artist (turns out he is, but a really good one). After a series of events Martin and the detective confront Alexis during one of his séances and put him on the spot, to which Alexis delivers, much to the surprise of everyone (including Alexis himself) as Paul's spirit makes an appearance...holy guacamole! Martin aka Mr. Practical still thinks it's all a sham, but Christine's more convinced than ever, resulting in a falling out between the two (I guess the wedding's off, but I missed the part where she returned the engagement ring with the ginormous diamond)...eventually some surprising, nay, shocking revelations are made, all leading up to a very climatic and engaging finale.

I came into this film not expecting much other than perhaps a modest mystery type thriller, but it turned out to be a whole lot more. Everything here worked out very well including the strong performances, the excellent directing, the exceptional cinematography by John Alton (T-Men, Father of the Bride, An American in Paris), the sometimes humorous dialog, the tightly woven and complicated plot, loads of atmosphere, decent special effects, thoughtful settings, and so much more. I really can't tell you how much I enjoy coming into a film expecting little, and walking away with the complete satisfaction of finding a real gem. There were so many little, enjoyable touches throughout, a few of the more memorable ones including the following...as Martin and Janet contact a private investigator who's somewhat of an expert in uncovering psychic sham artists we see the investigator performing a number of slight of hands tricks while the three are talking. Turns out the guy is as good as he is because at one time he was a magician, and is familiar with many of tricks of the trade. Watch as Janet is completely mesmerized by the man's abilities...that disappearing cigar gag is a hoot. Another bit involves Alexis, after it's confirmed to the audience, at least, that he is a scam artist, and we see how his home is set up as one, giant tool to facilitate his profession, complete with two way mirrors, remote control doors, and so on...at one point an obviously wealthy, older woman shows up, goes through his little `entrance' routine, and then during their proper meeting, Alexis suavely takes her hand as to kiss it...watch his eyes grow wide as he gets a good look at the jewels on her hand. My favorite bit is near the beginning when Martin proposes, doing so right in front of the huge, sinister-looking portrait painting of Christine's deceased husband...perhaps it's time for that baby to come down....yeesh...in the hands of others this film probably would have come off more as a run of the mill mystery, but given the obviously professional efforts of those involved I thought at times I was watching a something along the lines of a Hitchcock film. It may not have had the nail biting tension so often featured in Hitchcock's films, but it came very close. The strongest character for me was Alexis, played by Turhan Bey. Man what a smooth operator...here's someone who has honed his craft to the point where it seems flawless. It's one thing to be able to perform parlor tricks for the rubes, but it's the true artist who studies his marks with a psychological eye, picking up on their body language, and telling them exactly what they want to hear while making it come across completely natural. All in all I thought this a lot of fun, and a great choice for those who appreciate well made, entertaining mystery thrillers infused with `noir' qualities.

Released by Wade Williams, the picture quality on this Image Entertainment DVD, presented in fullscreen, does suffer some age related damage as there are white specks and vertical lines present through nearly the entire feature. While noticeable at the outset, I eventually got used to it and just enjoyed the story. The audio, presented in Dolby Digital mono, comes through very well. There are no extra features on the DVD, but it is divided into twelve chapter stops. Included within the case is an insert with informative liner notes by freelance writer Jim Arena, providing some background on the performers and the production.

The cinematography is wonderful, really unrecognized. This is classic film noir thriller. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent thriller that's well worth a look.......2005-09-26

Just as greiving widow Christine Faber (Lynn Bari) is about to put the tragic death of her husband behind her and move on with her life, she starts hearing his voice on the wind... his restless spirit has returned to haunt her! In a fortuitous coincidence, Christine meets Alexis (Turhan Bey), a psychic who offers to help her contact her husband's spirit and perhaps put it to rest.

Christine's younger sister (Cathy O'Donnell) and Christine's would-be new paramour thinks that the meeting with Alexis was too fortuitous, and they suspect that perhaps he is part of a scam to defraud the emotionally frail Christine of her inheritance. They secure the services of a magician turned private eye who specializes in debuniking phoney mediums and set about to expose Alexis for the fraud he is. However, the haunting continues to grow in intensity. Can it be that Christine's departed husband really is reaching out from beyond and attempting to pull her into a watery grave along side him?

This 1948 B-movie is an excellently made thriller. It is well acted, well filmed, moves briskly, and keeps the viewer engaged with clever plot-twists and a couple of nicely done double-reversals of expectations. There are films with perhas ten times the budget of "The Amazing Mr. X" that aren't half as successful at telling the kind of story that this film features--which, I admit, was pretty well-worn even in 1948. That said, modern filmmakers trying their hands at thrillers with supernatural overtones would do well to study this work, as it shows exactly how that kind of film is made.

Don't let the cheesy title fool you. This is a top-notch thriller that's well worth a look by any lover of the genre.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible, avoid at all costs .......2007-09-05

Once again, another worthless low budget embarrassment that astounds me that somehow it found its way onto rental shelves. Absolute waste of time and money. Terrible acting, horrible plot development, excessive and over the top cussing, and even a random and pointless sex scene between two people who are not even part of the story.

A complete movie mess. Avoid at all costs!

5 out of 5 stars Low bucks horror classic.......2007-04-27

If you and your sweetie have a hankering to sit down to a Friday night horror movie, Mr. Hell is a must for your list. It's not so bloody that it'll turn your date off, but scary enough to keep her jumping into your arms. And you might jump into her arms as well, if you are like me, who is spooked by threats to your eyes. This is classic Steven KIng territory, picking phobias most of us have. I won't give away the plot, except to say it involves stealing souls via plucked out eyes. But I will say it has some of the funniest scenes I've encountered in horror movies - where humor is a must. For example: when the bad guy bends over a sink washing out stollen eyeballs while humming, "Three Blind Mice." Like the very best "grindhouse" features, Mr. Hell features super writing and clever dialogue that lifts the film up to the very top of its genre.

1 out of 5 stars Should be sub-titled.......2006-06-29

Sound is so bad, of such poor quality that this film should be sub-titled. Only able to hear about 2/3 of the film. I'm going to return mine to Amazon for a refund. Do not buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great classic horror movie!.......2006-05-03

This is an entertaining movie! The title is clever and the plot line was good for this genre of movie. This one has something for just about everyone...scares, action, gore, and humor mixed in. I was also surprised by the quality of the stunts...falls, fire, explosions, fights...that rival much larger budget movies.
NOTE ABOUT THE CAST Contrary to the previous reviewer, Tina Cohen is not the lead. The lead is veteran actress Tracy Scoggins, supported by Pavan Grover and Danny Kamin. If he had paid attention, Tina Cohen was far down on the credits!

1 out of 5 stars BAD IN EVERY WAY!.......2006-04-28

The plot, what there is of it, concerns a "secret" bio weapons lab where the head doctor had been killed some years earlier by a supernatural serial killer named Mr. Hell who steals peoples souls by removing their eyes. Now some 15 years later the doctor's daughter has returned to the lab only to find that the killer is still there as well. Add to that there is a sub-plot about some mercenaries who are searching the lab for a deadly bacteria formula ala Resident Evil. Ok...It's really hard to take seriously a film called "Mr. Hell" so it's got one strike against it right from the word go. This is one of those films where it's the very first movie for much of the cast. This, of course, is yet another bad sign. In fact the lead actress Tina Cohen doubles as set decorator! Really there is little redeeming about the film. I supposed the basic plot was OK, but then again, the basic premise is usually pretty good in most films, it's the execution of the plot where many low-budget horror films normally fail and "Mr. Hell" is no different. The acting is terrible...the delivery is stunted and the scripting is no better. The special effects aren't bad for what they had to work with but that may be about the only positive thing I can say. Just terrible on every level and yet another low-budget horror piece of junk clogging the rental shelves. Avoid!

Included within the case is an insert with informative liner notes by freelance writer Jim Arena, providing some background on the performers and the production.

4 out of 5 stars Great little film.......2006-01-11
