Veteran fitness expert Denise Austin's Personal Training System is one of several exercise programs designed to take advantage of a valuable feature of the DVD format: namely, the ability for viewers to customize their own workouts by picking and choosing from various elements presented in Austin's prescribed routines. These include sections devoted to cardio (available at low and high intensity levels, both about 20 minutes long), upper and lower body exercises (offered at low, medium, and high intensity, each about ten minutes long), and abdominal and stretching segments (the same for all levels, these also last about ten minutes). Meanwhile, the "custom workout" option enables users to combine any or all of these elements according to taste and fitness level. There's nothing especially innovative here--indeed, the cardio sections are pretty much old school, Jane Fonda Workout-style aerobics, while the upper and lower body sections include light weights, bends, lunges, push-ups and other tried-and-true elements--but those looking for a thorough, sweat-inducing regimen will certainly find it here. Austin's relentlessly effervescent style will no doubt prove inspiring to some and cloying to others. On the other hand, the entire program can be done without her audio instructions, and those who simply don't want to work out at all can occupy themselves with an accompanying booklet filled with diet pointers and recipes. --Sam Graham

A Perfect Place to Start!.......2007-09-02
If I could recommend only one DVD to a beginning exerciser that includes everything you need to get in shape, it would likely be this one for several reasons. For one, Denise Austin is one of the most geniune and motivational fitness instructors and her videos are typically fun to do. Second, this DVD includes all three fitness elements required to get in shape - cardio/aerobics, resistance training for the entire body, and a thorough stretch. Third, the DVD is customizable, so that you can pick and choose which exercise routine, or which combination of exercise routines you want to perform to add variety or apply for when you're pressed for time. And lastly, you can grow with this DVD, beginning with the 'low' intensity options and progessing to the 'high' intensity options.
The DVD includes the following customizable segments:
2 Twenty-minute Cardio (Low & High Intensity)
2 Ten-minute Upper Body (Low, Medium & High Intensity)
2 Ten-minute Lower Body (Low, Medium & High Intensity)
1 Ten-minute Abs
1 Ten-minute Stretch
Another thing I really liked is that Denise even incorporates a lot of Pilates-based floorwork for the lower intensity versions while utilizing more standing traditional strength training exercises (like squats and lunges) for the higher intensity versions, so you can even do both in one workout for very different routines. The abdominals routine is also very Pilates-based and effective.
The set is very stylish as usual, and the accompanying music is fitting and not overly distracting. You also have the option to select the music without Denise's instruction once you become more familiar with the routines, although I personal enjoy listening to her motivating speech and feeling like there's a positive friend working out right along with me.
Intermediate-to-Advanced exercisers can also benefit from this workout as well (actually, the all high-intensity option is more intermediate level), either by combining more segments are upping the weights during the Arms routines.
Overall, this a highly enjoyable, complete workout system that includes exercises which target every single part of the body as well as two easy-to-follow cardio routines of appropriate length for burning fat.
You get a lot for your money with this DVD and not a moment is wasted. Highly recommended.

VERY BASIC!!.......2007-08-31
I was really excited about being able to customize my workout and that is why I thought this DVD would be a good one for me. I found it to be very boring and also very basic. The abs were pretty good, but that is it. I like to be challenged and this did not at all. The advanced is not advanced. It is much more of a basic, simple, no sweat workout. I recommend Sharon Mann 123 the works if you are looking for a customized workout that will be good for all levels.
Lost 25 pounds using this so far!.......2007-08-28
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this DVD. I hadn't worked out in years and needed to get my booty in gear having gained 50 pounds over the past 4 or 5 years. I started out slow and LOVE the custom workout option on this DVD. What a great use of technology! I mostly do the high intensity upper body, medium intensity lower body, abs and stretch routines on a daily basis. For cardio, I've added walking, as I don't care for the cardio routines on this DVD.
I've lost 25 pounds over the course of 3 months and I haven't felt this good in years! Anyone can start and grow into a workout program with this DVD!
Love it!.......2007-08-26
I have several of Denise's DVD's and I love all of them. This one is awesome because you choose your level (or work up to higher levels). I have been alternating this one with Shrink Your Female Fat Zones (another GREAT DVD of Denise's)for about 3 weeks and my clothes are fitting better and soon I'll be down one size.
Great Workout For All.......2007-08-26
Bought this as a gift for someone and they loved every minute of Denise Austin. I remember watching Denise Austin on her cable channel early in the morning and the DVD was just like that, but I didn't have to get up so early to catch her on t.v. If anyone is looking to tone, burn, and lose weight, this DVD is for you. Enjoy!

In Because I Said So, Diane Keaton outdoes any pushy parent trying to marry off their children. On the eve of her 60th birthday, Daphne (Keaton) decides that she will find a suitable suitor for her youngest daughter Milly (Mandy Moore). Never mind that Moore was barely into her 20's when she shot the film and easily could pass as a high-school senior. The film asks us to believe that an otherwise smart, loving mother would push marriage on a young woman who obviously wasn't ready for that kind of commitment. The romantic comedy has a cute premise that grows old fast: In order to root for Daphne's almost manic desire to see Milly walk down the aisle, the audience has to believe she's undergoing some kind of trauma, or at least dying of an incurable disease. But because she is such an overbearing busybody whose best interests for her daughter have little to do with reality, viewers just see an obnoxious, meddling mother trying to micromanage her child's life. That we don't want to strangle Daphne is a credit to Keaton's acting skills, which manage to shine through, even in the most over-the-top scenes. Lauren Graham and the always adorable Piper Perabo play Milly's older, married sisters. Had the film revolved around the three sisters' lives--sans mom--Because I Said So would have been a much more interesting picture. --Jae-Ha Kim

Not a bad way to spend an anniversary.......2007-09-11
My husband and I actually decided to rewatch this movie together on a somewhat monumental anniversary (we had seen it separately). I had read all the negative press on this film and was prepared for something truly dreadful. It was far from dreadful. A lot of the dialogue was really well written. Perhaps the reason that my husband enjoyed it was that there are two male characters/actors (Gabriel Macht's Johnny and Stephen Collins's Joe) who really excel at neutralizing the hysteria of their female counterparts. We see a lot of good-for-nothing guys in movies and commercials (I call it the men-are-idiots school), so it's refreshing to see a couple of really good, nice men who make the extra effort to work it out with a couple of basically good but really needy women.
Personally I really had a problem with Johnny's son Lionel. I suppose he had ADHD, although that was never really addressed, other than the line about Lionel's "unique rhythms," which I hated. Definitely a high-maintenance kid, and again it was refreshing to see Johnny and his dad raising this boy and barely batting an eye.
I hated Tom Everett Scott's character, but then again, I believe I was supposed to.
This is not a subtle movie, but it contains some appealing performances. Overall I think it has gotten a bad rap.
Inconsequential Misfire Has an Over-the-Top Keaton Dominating an Underused Cast.......2007-09-11
When I watched Diane Keaton on Charlie Rose after 2005's The Family Stone was released, I was struck by what a laser-sharp, perceptive and funny non-conformist she continues to be when she is challenged to reveal herself. What an utter comedown to see this superb actress play such a dithering, overbearing and one-track character in this dismal 2007 misfire. Ostensibly a comedy with dramatic moments, this is exactly the type of unoriginal studio-manufactured product that gets released in the post-holiday box-office wasteland. Limply directed in handbook style by Michael Lehmann (who made the sharp black comedy, Heathers, and the infamous turkey, Hudson Hawk), there is barely a scene that rings true thanks primarily to the manipulative, formulaic screenplay by Karen Leigh Hopkins and Jessie Nelson. That this movie was ever green-lighted is the biggest wonder about the film.
The paper-thin plot has Keaton portray Daphne Wilder, the single mother of three grown daughters. About to turn sixty, she has already married off her two oldest, level-headed Maggie and sex-crazed Mae, and her overprotective nature will not allow her to rest until her youngest, Milly, is married. Daphne goes to the extreme of posting an online personal ad in order to interview potential suitors and finds two prospects - passively manipulative architect Jason and deceptively casual rock musician Johnny. Daphne's blueprint for a perfect husband is Jason, but Johnny figures out how to meet Milly on his own. Milly dates both men unbeknownst to each other. The standard complications ensue, not the least of which is how Daphne's long dormant libido is awakened by Johnny's easy-going dad Joe. The rest of the cast is serviceable at best and ill-used at worst. Mandy Moore is an appealing presence as the clumsy, endearing Milly, although she is overloaded with enough cutesy idiosyncrasies to make Keaton's own Annie Hall look relatively unaffected.
As Jason, Tom Everett Scott seems to play the same role over and over, the superficial yuppie who does not fare well upon closer inspection. By contrast, Gabriel Macht conveys the necessary sincerity to make the overly sensitive Johnny the more desirable prospect. As Maggie, Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) has at least one running gag as the psychiatrist to a hopeless nebbish (expertly played by Tony Hale of Arrested Development) to take advantage of her comic talent, but Piper Perabo (Imagine Me & You) is little more than a glorified extra as Mae. Stephen Collins plays the too-convenient-to-be-true Joe as if he walked off the set of 7th Heaven. When the movie is not dealing with Milly's eroding self-confidence, sitcom-level laughs seem to be the only aspiration that the sputtering script has. Saddest of all is Keaton who is encouraged to exaggerate all her mannerisms into a morass of fluttery excess, most conspicuously in an embarrassing meltdown scene that has her character lose her voice. The 2007 DVD is sparse on extras - a seven-minute making-of featurette, a five-minute short spotlighting the production design and food preparation, an unrelated iVillage ad and a music video of "World Spins Madly On" by the Weepies.
Quite Realistic.......2007-09-04
Although this is by far not one of the best movies I have ever seen, I really enjoyed this movie. Yes, the dialogue could have been a lot better, but the thought behind it hit close to home. This movie is all about a meddling mother, which many of us can relate to. While two of her daughters are married, she is determined that her single daughter needs a man in her life, so she tries to set her up - by submitting an internet personal ad. I found the movie to be really cute. Although I have seen Diane Keaton to be better in other movies, I really liked Mandy Moore, Lauren Graham, and Piper Perabu as sisters. This was not as bad as I had thought it might be, based on other reviews I read. It's a true chick flick, but I'd watch it again!
Very cute girlie movie....exactly as you would expect! .......2007-08-30
I waited untily my husband was away before I watched this movie, since I think this one is strictly for the ladies. It was a very cute "chick flick" that I found completely relatable and think it will be adored by girls/women with close relationships with their sisters and/or mothers. This is one product that is exactly as advertised...a sweet movie to cuddle up on the couch with - alone or with the ladies in your life...friends, sisters, mothers, daughters, etc.
The acting wasn't anything to write home about, but I thought Mandy Moore was quite natural. I was a little disappointed in Diane Keaton's performance, since I have seen her act on a much higher caliber in other films, although she definitely reminded me of a few overbearing mothers I know (fortunately not my own), which made me laugh a lot!
All in all, I would recommend it if you're in the mood for a sweet, cute movie. If you're interested in this genre, but want to be really touched or find a film that truly delivers, I HIGHLY recommend the following: The Holiday; The Family Stone; Prime; Love, Actually; Serendipity; Sweet Home Alabama; Imagine Me & You; Chasing Liberty; Failure to Launch; The American President and Catch & Release.
Meddling Mothers, Online Dating, and Romantic Comedy.......2007-08-27
Diane Keaton plays single mom Daphne to three grown daughters, two married Maggie and Mae, but the youngest one busy with a career and not much luck in love. Mom is about to turn 60 and is worried that her single youngest daughter, the workaholic caterer Milly, is going to end up just like her. Thats when mom takes matters into her own hands by posting an ad on the internet without Milly's knowledge. Daphne goes through a series of potential beaus until she finds Jason, an arrogrant and quick tempered architect from Conneticut. Jason gets mom's vote but session musician Johnny moves in on Milly two creating a love triangle. Mom pushes for Jason but Milly is making better music with her own choice - Johnny. Mother and daughter test their wills when Johnny's dad Joe has unexpected chemistry with Daphne and Jason reveals to Milly just how he came to meet her. Because I Said So ... is cute, charming, and typical chick flick romantic comedy that is easy to follow and sweet to the finish.

Straight From the Heart.......2007-09-11
This is a great love story. It's clean and decent, and worth having in our movie library. It's another one that I would highly recommend for anyone to own.
The book on which this movie was based came before "The Horse Whisperer".......2007-08-27
This is for those who think that this movie is a slightly-changed version of "The Horse Whisperer": Pamela Wallace published her book "Straight from the Heart," on which this movie was based, in 1996.
Nicholas Evans published "The Horse Whisperer," on which that movie was based, in 1998.
Hit the spot!.......2007-08-07
This was a very nice story. OK, popcorn for the brain, but light, filling, and hits the right spot. There is a nice chemistry between the two leads and a believable story. After renting, I liked it enough to buy it for my DVD collection.
An Overall Good Movie.......2007-07-31
Somehow I never got to see the whole story on the Hallmark channel, so I wanted my own copy as I really liked the story, the actors, and the scenery. I was a bit taken aback by the dialogue between the two main characters when they first met, but the writers had their own ideas, I guess. I'd watch it with my grandchildren.
'The Horse Whisperer' Lite.......2007-07-23
I was looking forward to this film. Indeed, I made sure it was at the top of my `Netflix' queue. Unfortunately, it was the one that got away. Soon there was a very long wait. People are no doubt drawn to this film because they are longing for simple, good entertainment. Perhaps they first saw it on `The Hallmark Channel' and wanted to see it again. It's not all that great of a film, but it is worthwhile anyway. That needs an explanation, so bear with me. It certainly is easy to watch. I think great film or not, it goes down easily and becomes a casual pleasure. The subject matter is interesting even if the whole affair becomes no better than a lite (or, "light") version of 'The Horse Whisperer'.
The story is the basis for a romantic culture clash. Jordan Donovan (Teri Polo) is a photographer from New York City. She's tired of the typical treadmill of romance. In both aspects of her life she is trying to break through. Her arty exhibits of (literally) garbage fail to spark interest for a sponsor of photography exhibits. Meanwhile, her love interest, Edward, has been dating her for years, but refuses to make a commitment. Her roommate, Carla, (Christine Tucci) is presented like a half-funny, but easily as likable Rhoda. She plays matchmaker by signing her up for `Cowboy Connections,' a magazine with a "Personals" column designed to hook up couples out West.
All too neatly, Carla has taken the liberty of not only putting her friend's name in the magazine, but writing her background and answering any prospects that come to her. On Jordan's birthday, she not only has a man, but a plane ticket for her to join him at his ranch in Wyoming. Cynically, she, nevertheless, does what most people would do at the prospect of adventure: She accepts both as a present.
Even more neatly, Tyler Ross (Andrew McCarthy) has a doting sister named Laurie (Patricia Kalember) who answers his personal ads for him. Jaundiced about dating again, he doesn't think much when she calls to tell him a woman from NYC is coming to his ranch. Something must stir inside him, for we discover earlier it was he who provided the plane ticket.
Her arrival is not a friendly one. Quickly, the resentment pours through: At breakfast he tartly announces that they don't serve "espresso" at the morning table. Later, when she's falls off a horse, he nastily chides, "I don't want some big city lawyer trying to sue me." She understandably doesn't allow herself to be a walking mat. She has some counter resentments to offer: going toe-to-toe she has plenty to say about cholesterol soaked breakfasts and his backward behavior. Yet, she has a background that he doesn't even consider, and as the movie unfolds, she has several opportunities to prove herself more than a typical city slicker.
Across the way former friend, Mr. Jameson, is brazen about trespassing on Tyler's land to capture wild mustangs for his own use. United Tyler and Jordan try to oppose his lawless horse trade while working out some terms of bitterness found in everyone's past.
Some of the appeal of the movie is the scenery. Mustangs rush past with autumnal mountain horizons while the pair take on the work of the land. The old-fashioned Western score by Mader is superb for the laid back adventure, and the tenderness of key scenes works its way incrementally as it goes along.
Pleasant, enjoyable, and easy-going like a trek to Wyoming itself, `Straight from the Heart' may not have the best performances, nor the most original dialogue, but it is still a pleasurable film trek anyway. While I thought throughout the "torn between two lovers" scenario Jordan deserved better choices, who's to judge about taste if a relationship has a chance to work? After all, sometimes even a two-star film is all we really need.

It's called "the Mozart Effect," the notion that exposing youngsters to the melodies of the maestro can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory. It's a pretty big leap of faith to understand that effect unless you personally see a toddler react to the stimulation. The Baby Einstein folks have a series of tapes (Baby Einstein, Baby Bach) that add visual stimulation to the bouncy recordings (using vibraphone, Rhodes electric piano, and even a glockenspiel). The melodies are heard against colorful imagery of spinning tops, wave machines, soft baby toys, mobiles, and the like. Several parenting groups and magazines have heralded the tapes for children 1 to 36 months, but the Orwellian aspect of introducing babes in arms to the TV screen may cause many to just pick up the CD. --Doug Thomas
Customer Reviews:
This Baby Einstein Highly Recommended for Parrots and their Parents ;).......2007-09-14
Upon the recommendation of a friend who uses Sesame Street with her parrots with good results, I decided to look around for some "learning" type dvd's for toddlers. I decided I did not want to go with Sesame Street for a few reasons, first of all, I can't stand that annoying "children's music" and I sure as heck didn't want our sweet little African Grey boy picking up on any of that. ;) Also, I don't see the point in dvd's that feature a lot of humans for educating and entertaining parrots. Baby Einstein's Baby Mozart was a perfect choice that met all of our criteria: lack of humans (just a couple of hands and a short clip of a human baby at the end), beautiful classical music, brilliant colors and interesting objects.
Greys tend to be a bit neurotic, and my little boy has a bad habit of screaming and biting his nails whenever I have to leave the room if he is not allowed to shoulder constantly. Baby Einstein Mozart held his attention and entertained him very well starting the first night we used it! I'd say this is a very good product for reducing stress with a Grey.
Frequent repetition of this DVD is the key to getting, and holding the attention of a Grey, in our experience. I set it on repeat and let it loop over and over again and I suggest you do the same if you get this for your parrot. Remember, dvd's aren't babysitters, the parrot will learn best if you are actively involved in the dvd watching with him/her at least some of the time.
The best thing about this video, other than being really effective with our little parrot boy, is that it's not at all annoying for the parrot parents! Even looped over and over again, it will not drive you mad.
My Babies Love It.......2007-09-06
My twin 4 month old boys are mesmerized watching this video. My husband and I wish we thought of it as it is still a wonder to us that it is such a successful video. However, the babies love it and that's what matters. I'd give it 5 stars based on the babies' thoughts but not mine and my husband's. After a while, you'll find yourself watching along.
My daughter loved the series.......2007-08-14
My daughter watched these when she only 4 months old until 3. She is now turning 6 years old. Is she any smarter for watching them, not sure but she is reading at a 3rd grade level. Did the fact that she watched them turn her into a mindless dud - NO WAY! Sure - people can come on here and rate the videos 1 star and say the pediatric blah blah blah says no TV under 2 but we all know that parents who take their time to pick out a few pieces of video for their kids under 2 are doing no wrong. What is the difference of putting a child under a mobile to sit and stare at then a video that plays music, shows mobiles, other kids, shiny toys, pieces of art, colors, numbers, shapes and nature? TV can be a very educational tool for your kids if used with the right shows/video and for a small amount of time each day. I would never sit my child in front of the TV playing mindless cartoons and I sure wouldn't let her watch 90% of the junk on most "kid" networks but when she was younger I would allow one video a day which equals 30min. They allowed my husband and I to enjoy occasional dinners together, it allowed my daughter to relax after a hard day of running in the playgrounds and most of all we would all sit around at night on occasion and learn from them. My daughter barely watches TV now because she is a reader and intrigued from many other things but when she was younger and couldn't do a lot on her own, those 30min where a blessing to all.
I highly recommend, Bach, Mozart, Van Gogh and Baby Santa as the 4 favs.
Baby Mozart, Just Wonderful.......2007-06-03
Baby Einstein is a wonderful new line of videos to aid in your child's development. Get them off to a new start with these videos, and this special one, Baby Mozart. Get them well on the way to a successful future now! Don't wait!
Baby Einstein is a Scam.......2007-05-27
Be a genius, don't fall for the alluring proposition that this will make you child any more cultured or intelligent. There are no studies or otherwise to prove anything that these videos claim.
"The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend television for children younger than two years of age." - [...]
"The baby video industry is a scam. There's no evidence that the videos are educational for babies, and a review of the research on babies and videos concludes that while older babies can imitate simple actions from a video they've seen several times, they learn much more rapidly from real life."
-Harvard Medical School psychologist Susan Lynn

This DVD just didn't have enough working for me. High impact was too much jumping and low impact didn't offer enough calorie burning.
Working Out.......2007-07-21
If you want some good old fashion stretching and toning, without all the pomp and ceremony, this is the way to go, Jane offers a no fuss exercise routine, that is easy to learn and becomes easy to do. She is inspirational
Absolutely love it............2007-06-15
Out of the numerous workout videos I've purchased in the past (Kathy Smith's, The Firm, Denise Autin's, Paula Abdul's dance video etc), this is my absolute favorite. I have never gotten bored of the total body sculpting workout, it can be used as a beginner workout or you can intensify it by using heavier weights or more reps. Even though it seems short, the warmup and cooldown is just the right amount and has never resulted in any injury even when I used heavier weights and did both sections of workout together. The music is not too loud or techno and Jane Fonda's voice is firm but soothing. She also gives you tips on proper posture throughout the workout. This is a must have for your workout library!
Oldie but a goodie.......2007-06-12
I used to own this tape but wore it out and was delighted to find it in dvd format. I've tried countless other videos by such outfits such as Crunch, Self, The Firm, Samba Party, and Billy Blanks and find that Jane is still the queen. She provides a variety of routines and fitness levels from which to work and she's clear and concise. However, I think it's just her constant nudging to get better, instead of the yelling or cheering in your face, that really sets her apart. She challenges you and yet lets you know that it's all right if you're not quite there yet--don't worry, you'll get there. I whole-heartedly recommend this dvd as well as Jane Fonda Collection: The Complete Workout & Stress Reduction Program. They truly will be a great addition to any finess library!
Great!.......2007-06-12
I have gone through each of the different workouts on this DVD and all of them are fun, short, and give you a great workout. Some of the routines can be confusing but once you catch on its great. I have used some of Jane Fonda's other videos and I like this one almost the best. The total body sculpting workouts are the best and really make you feel like you've worked out muscles you didn't know you have or that you wouldn't know how to target.

Love 'em and leave 'em--dead. That's the unstated but unmistakable motto of the predatory duo in Lonely Hearts, an affecting entry into the neo-noir landscape, with a twist: it's based on a true story. The all-star cast is led by John Travolta as detective Elmer Robinson, a dedicated cop haunted by the unexplained suicide of his wife. Travolta and his partner, played with blue-collar bravado by James Gandolfini, are old-style gumshoes who wear their characters as believably as they do their tattered fedoras. Travolta, particularly, wears his anguish on his tweedy sleeve, and underplays what could have been a scenery-chewing role. In the cops' crosshairs: evil lovebirds Martha Beck (Salma Hayek) and Ray Fernandez (Jared Leto), who prey on single women in "lonely hearts" advertisements, bilk them of their money, and! murder them--as much as a way to prove their twisted love for each other as for the financial gain.
The film is uniformly well acted, and transports the viewer to a simpler America that nonetheless echoes modern-day internet dating and the perils that can accompany too much trust. Leto downplays his pretty-boy looks to become believable as the oily and unhinged Ray, and the gorgeous Hayek is made up to a fare-thee-well.
Director Todd Robinson is the grandson of the real-life Elmer, and did the film as an homage to the case that consumed his grandfather. The making-of featurette is in some ways even more compelling than the feature, because of the moving interviews with the younger Robinson and his memories of his grandfather, and footage and news clips of the real-life Martha and Ray. There's plenty of fodder here for true-crime fans, and anyone who wants to savor a good shudder. --A.T. Hurley
Product Description
Martha Beck (Hayek) and Raymond Fernandez (Leto) were America's notorious "Lonely Heart Killers." Their lethal scam was simple; they would swindle and then viciously murder lovelorn war widows who would answer their proposal ads in which Ray would describe himself as a sexy Latin Lover. Ironically, Ray's initial introduction to Martha was a prospective mark. But when they met, it was love at first sight, perhaps as a result of their passion for hot-blooded sex and cold-blooded murder. With Martha posing as Ray's sister, they swindled elderly spinsters and widows of their savings then viciously murdered them in a bloodbath of sexual frenzy. Raymond and Martha believe they're literally getting away with murder until homicide detectives Elmer C. Robinson (Travolta) and Charles Hildebrandt (Gandolfini) pick up their scent.

More of Gandolfini and Travolta.......2007-09-14
Lonely Hearts
Gandolfini and Travolta were great together. Not overbearing or superhuman. WE see a couple of guys with character flaws hunting for a couple of killers. I'd like to see Gandolfini and Travolta paired again in future flicks. Hayek and Leto were excellent in their roles. This movie was a surprise for me. I picked it up because Gandolfini was in it.
Great film, but DVD has little to offer.......2007-09-13
I did enjoy "Lonely Hearts" -- Travolta and Gandolfini make an excellent pair, playing the hard-boiled East Coast detectives with panache. Jared Leto was a commanding presence as Fernandez. I also approved of Selma Hayek, although I was amused when I did some reading on the real-life Martha Beck and learned she was, in the flesh, close to 300 pounds.
Hardly a justification for the slender (if shapely) Miss Hayek to portray Martha with any justice. I suppose Hollywood is still light years away from having a "heavyweight" play a leading lady, even if Nikki Blonsky did recently steal the show in the lead of "Hairspray".
The DVD was a colossal disappointment BECAUSE it had no extra features of note. It should have, at the very least, included a documentary about the real-life Lonely Hearts killers. I did my own reading online and learned that the grandson of the actual policeman (played by Travolta) was the director of this film. The scrapbook seen in the movie's opening is the original book the director's grandmother compiled, chronicling her husband's career.
I did enjoy the film-noir feel of the film and found it equally compelling and horrifying, which means it did its work well.
Solid but not a classic.......2007-09-12
This is more like a 3.5 or maybe 3.75 star film, but no half star voting is available...
Everything is well-done in Lonely Hearts. The script is good, performances are all decent, with Selma standing out. Buuut...there's just not enough x-factor, that magic thang that makes a film really get inside my brain and heart. There are so many other excellent films noir out there that this ends up on the A-minus-list. Still, considering how few decent story-based films are made these daze, Lonely Hearts is no slouch.
Unless you've already seen Double Indemnity, The Killing, Touch of Evil, Out of the Past, Maltese Falcon, etc etc, you may want to wait on this one.
That said, it's a good psychological portrait with the added soupcon of being made by the original main character cop's grandson.
(And btw, here's Gandolfini doing his Tony voice as usual...listen to him on the commentary track and you hear his real and very different voice. Is the Joisey crackle the only dialect we're going to get from this otherwise excellent actor? Sorry, Tone...please don't send Paulie Walnuts over with a shovel.)
Deserves better.......2007-09-12
This film disappeared from the theatres so quickly most people never heard of it. It deserves your attention. If only to watch Selma give you a glimpse of madness. Kinky done well.
Lonely Hearts.......2007-09-07
Interesting story plot. Rather slow at times. Rather bloody at times. Not the type of part we expected to see Salma Hayek play.

Just Excelent!!.......2007-08-20
I've never done any workouts before. I started with some dvd's but this one is great!! From beginners to advanced, it still helps me stay fit. I do 20 minutes cardio first, then put on the dvd. It's been a year and I feel better than ever!!! Just Excelent!!
Great for beginners!.......2007-04-07
I have started doing PIlates recently and came across this DVD. It is a nice workout with lots of choices. I like that there are beginning, intermediate and advanced levels with all of the different workouts for each level. I bought this company's Yoga for Weight Loss and like it a lot as well.
At home pilates gets an A.......2007-03-10
I bought this product for my mom since she doesn't care to work out at the local recreation centre. I think she really likes doing the exercises, and it has motivated her to do additional fitness related things like getting a new treadmill and lifting.
Pretty nice work out.......2007-03-09
I am not so sure about the weight loss part but the working for toning in this DVD is nice. It is a good supplement to the "Pilates Complete for Everyone". Many of the routines are similar but there is more work with weights in this DVD. I enjoy pilates but my experience is limited to DVD's at home and I have enjoyed both Pilates Complete for Everyone and now this one.
A comprehensive Pilates DVD designed for all levels.......2007-01-24
This DVD contains not 1, not 2 or 3, but 15 different Pilates mat routines. The routines are broken down into 3 levels, Beginning, Intermediate, and Challenging, and they are instructed via voiceover by certified Pilates instructor Karen Garcia. In addition to the workouts themselves, each section of the DVD also includes a "Lesson," which breaks down the new moves at each level. Within each level, the same footage is used in more than one routine in order to create a variety of different practice options.
Here is the main DVD menu, with my notes in parentheses:
Lesson: Principles/Cautions (overview of basic Pilates principles)
Beginning Routines
Intermediate Routines
Challenging Routines
Interview (6 minute Q&A session with Karen)
About the Instructor
Other Products (lists other Body Wisdom DVDs)
Contact and Credits
Okay, now I'll break down each of the three levels. The times are as they appear on screen, but the times in parentheses are based on my own review. I've included an overview of the exercises included in each practice (this is not intended to be comprehensive).
Beginning Routines (displayed by Sherri)
*Beginning Lesson (24m)--instructions for the hundred, roll-up, leg circles, rolling like a ball, single and double leg stretch, spine stretch forward, open leg rocker, corkscrew, saw, beginning side kicks, teaser, seal, modified Pilates push-ups, beginning weight series
*Basics, 10 minutes (13m)--the hundred, modified roll-up, leg circles, single and double leg stretch, modified teaser, corkscrew, saw, seal
*Basics Variation, 20 minutes (17m)--adds spine stretch forward, open leg rocker, and side kicks to the above
*Basics with Warm-Up, 30 minutes (28m)--adds a 6.5 minute standing stretch series and a 2 minute seated warm-up; also adds Pilates push-ups and the weight series
*More Challenging Basics, 20 minutes (17m)--a less modified version of the Basics Variation which includes the weight series
*Challenging Basics with Warm-Ups, 30 minutes (29.5)--adds the warm-ups described above; also includes seal, Pilates push-ups, and the weight series
Intermediate Routines (displayed by Karen herself)
*Intermediate Lesson (20m)--instructions for a Pilates sit, single and double leg stretch (unmodified), single and double leg kicks, neck pull, shoulder bridge, spine twist, side kicks, full teaser, swimming, mermaid, seal, and intermediate weight series
*Short Variation, 15 minutes (15.5m)--the hundred, roll up, full series of 5; most difficult exercises include the teaser and swimming
*Short with Arm Work, 20 minutes (23m)--the segment utilizes unusual sequencing and includes the neck pull, teaser, seal, Pilates push-ups, and the weight series
*Short with Leg Work, 30 minutes (29m)--the leg work here is in the form of additional exercises such as the leg kicks, shoulder bridge, and side kicks; also includes the weighted arm series
*Longer with Leg Work, 35 minutes (34m)--adds the 6.5 minute standing warm-ups; also includes the neck pull, side kicks, swimming, and mermaid/seal/push-ups to finish
*Longest with Warm-ups, Abs, Leg, and Arm Work, 35 minutes (38m)--includes both the standing and seated warm-ups, full series of 5, open leg rocker, corkscrew, leg kicks, neck pull, shoulder bridge, side kicks, mermaid/seal/push-ups, and weight series
Advanced Routines (displayed by Alice)
*Challenging Lesson (15m)--instruction on the roll-over, corkscrew (advanced version), swan dive, side kick series, can can, hip circles, leg pull-down/pull-up, boomerang, plus advanced Pilates push-ups and weight series
*Short Variation with Warm-up, 20 minutes (21.5)--includes both the standing and seated warm-ups flowing into a fairly standard advanced mat routine; most difficult exercise is the boomerang
*Short Variation without Warm-up, 20 minutes (19m)--again, a standard advanced mat series which includes the advanced corkscrew, slow and fast repetitions of the series of 5, multiple repetitions of Teasers 1 & 2, and the boomerang
*Short Variation with Leg Work, 20 minutes (22.5m)--the leg exercises include the shoulder bridge, the leg pull-down/pull-up, etc.; this segment also seemed to have more intense ab/back work (eg, the neck pull and the swan dive)
*Longer with Leg Work, 35 minutes (31)--includes the 6.5 minute standing warm-up plus additional side kicks exercises
*Longest with Warm-ups, Abs, Leg, and Arm Work, 40 minutes (
<43m)--this segment adds both the standing and the seated warm-ups, a Pilates ring during the teaser, and the weight series
In general, the practices on this DVD followed traditional Pilates sequencing, although some of the shorter routines deviated a bit. I was a bit surprised by how some of the exercises were classified--for example, I've usually seen open leg rocker and corkscrew rated as intermediate exercises, not beginner as taught here, and similarly, some of the challenging exercises were what I would consider to be intermediate. I'm at an intermediate level myself, and I was able to complete the Challenging routines without much difficulty (whereas Hilary Burnett's Advanced Mat is a bit beyond my level).
I think that this DVD would be fairly well-suited to someone who is new to Pilates and who is looking to purchase just one DVD that they can grow with over time. The add-on style teaching here (ie, you add in more challenging exercises as you progress) is similar to Brooke Siler's The Pilates Body, an excellent book for those new to the discipline. Although this video also contains more challenging practices, I would not recommend it for someone like myself who is already coming in at an intermediate or above level, largely because so much of what is offered is likely to go unutilized by the more experienced practitioner.
In summary, this DVD would likely work best for those new to Pilates who have had little experience with other Pilates videos.
