DVD: 05-51361 A Boyfriend for Christmas Kelli Williams (The Practice) is Holly Grant, an idealistic lawyer who gave up on finding Mr. Right in her stocking when she split with her last boyfriend. OSCAR nominee Charles Durning (To Be or Not to Be) plays Santa, who fulfills an old promise by bringing her and another attorney, Ryan Hughes (Patrick Muldoon), together. Due to an earlier misunderstanding, Ryan doesn't want Holly to know who he is, so when Santa sends him to deliver a Christmas tree, he introduces himself as "Douglas Firewood." This is a well done movie with fairly good acting that makes the characters come to life. You pretty much know what the ending is going to be, but the journey is completely enjoyable. Puts a smile on your face.

This dvd is rife with nostalgic Christmas tales as played out by Mickey and friends. Both my daughters and I love this dvd and is one of our holiday favorites. The second dvd Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas is made with computer animation, but just as wonderful. This is a must in any (at heart) children's dvd library.

Great Holiday Movie.......2007-07-24

I love this movie, it is great for kids and families. I'm a college student and it is one of my favorite Christmas movies. The stories revolve around well known Disney characters and show how important it is to be with family and friends at Christmas time. This movie is a great Disney masterpiece and should be added to your families Christmas movie list.

Let's Watch Mickey - for the 18th time. .......2007-02-27

My 3 1/2 year old can't get enough of these classic Mickey stories. We watched it almost nightly during the holidays and he still pulls it out of the DVD case at least once a week and laughs at his favorite parts. Or sings the songs along with Mickey and Donald. Or recites the script as the movie plays along.

This is a great Christmas video, especially for younger children. My 2 year old loves to watch it over and over and over. I also enjoy the stories, which is why I gave it 5 stars. It is not annoying as many other cartoons can be. A must for Disney lovers.

Oh no! Santa's stuck in the chimney! All of the noise coming from the fireplace wakes Elmo up, and suddenly, Elmo knows what he must do. With a great amount of courage, Elmo pulls Santa out. He has saved Christmas! As a reward, Santa offers Elmo the choice of a pink bear or a magical snow globe that gives you three wishes. Naturally, Elmo chooses the snow globe. Hmmm...what should Elmo wish for? A firetruck? A castle? No...Elmo wishes that it was Christmas every day! However, that's not such a good idea. The elves are baffled: they're suddenly working overtime! And even worse- Santa decides to retire! It's up to Elmo to save Christmas again, with the help of the time traveling reindeer, Lightning. Will he be able to do it?

I absolutely love this movie! It's a thrilling tale, starring our favorite little red monster, that teaches kids that too much of one thing is not good.

This is an entertaining DVD. Four year old Elmo, is granted one wish. What would most children wish for on Christmas? You probably guessed, Elmo wishes for every day to be Christmas. Santa and his elves are exhausted and try to show Elmo that if every day is Christmas, Christmas is no longer special, it's just like evry other day. My 20-month old daughter likes this DVD, but not as much as Elmo's World - Happy Holidays.

I must say I enjoyed this movie very much. It is a retrospective of Eve's
choices. Sometimes an individual looks back on a situation wishing that they could reexamine a decision. This movie is a fine example that Christmas is a magical time. That a person can get what they wish for.
Eve looks for happiness in New York, but she has to go home to Oregon and the road lest traveled. She finds happiness with Scott by making her Christmas wish.

My granddaughter has watched this movie many times. Even when it isn't christmas. I think all young kids should watch this movie. It teaches them all about helping other people and sharing. It's a really great movie.

My girls love this movie! They are three and two, and this is all they want to watch since it came in the mail two weeks ago. The story is cute, and well written. I love that they describe the Christmas season as celebration of the birth of Jesus which it is.(They put that in the pagent parts), but still included some silly santa stuff. My husband and I have watched it with them, and we laugh at the same times they do. They also show the discription of a loss of a loved one, and how people deal with that kind of event emotionally. I appreciated that they described this all very clearly and beautifully in a way that my little girls can understand. Good family movie.

Wholesome story that adults and chlldren enjoy.......2007-01-27

This is a really nice story where the characters do thougthful things for one another, helping out a family who lost their father since the previous Christmas (so if your recipients had this happen recently you might want to preview the movie or skip it until more time has passed).

There is a religious element to the movie, which you don't see in movies these days. They sing some Christian Christmas songs and Leanne Rhimes voice is beautiful (as is the other female singer... I can't remember her name... but she's just as wonderful as Leanne).

My girls are 4 and 6 and they love this movie as well as the previously released DVD. We're looking forward to the preview for the next Holly Hobbie DVD coming out in Feb. 2007. I love the Holly Hobbie movies because the characters are positive role models for children and reinforce the importance of being thoughtful and kind to one another.

Wonderful Christmas DVD for Young Children.......2007-02-17

I bought this DVD for my [...]grandaughter before Christmas. This is one of the few DVD's that she wants to see over and over. She is still requesting to watch it in February! The songs are great for young children to sing along and the kids singers are delightful. Easy for young children to follow and understand. Very colorful also. I will definitely be looking at more Kids Songs DVD's, hoping they are all as good as this one.

My 3 year old daughter, Olivia, has several of the Kidsongs videos. I can let her watch them and not worry about the content or language (there aren't many videos like that anymore). Not what I expected........2004-11-22

I was looking forward to my daughter's first christmas and her 1st birthday (She was born on christmas day 2003) so I bought this dvd so she could enjoy some Christmas Songs. What a disappointment! They should call it Happy Holidays as it deals with Christmas from a secular point of view. My daughter loves it, her face lights up when she sees Santa Claus but I wish it had more Carols and more holiday spirit. It's easy to see that it was shot on a sound stage with lots of fake snow. The main Story line is about a boy who goes to the North Pole to see Santa because he has been naughty all year, and he still gets a gift because he did one good deed. Another little girl gets a pony. (I guess all of it is done in a dream sequence, because as soon as the boy opens his eyes on Christmas morning he asks for a present). Still if you child likes Christmas music, you can try it out.

We love this movie! It is a wonderful movie that we watch at least once each Christmas. We love to watch it with friends who have not seen the movie~the ending is suprising & unexpected. A Great Christmas Mystery & Appropriate for All.......2006-09-03

I was recently able to purchase this movie secondhand, and I have to say that it is a really outstanding film. The theme of the movie is forgiveness and the importance of family, and there is a little romance thrown in as well. It's an excellent family film with no swearing. The acting by Neil Patrick Harris and Debbie Reynolds is superb.

Will is a young man who moves from New York to manage the family realitor business after the death of his grandfather. Will grew up with his grandparents because his parents were killed in a tragic car accident when he was very young. Therefore his grandparents were the most important people in his life, and Will knew that they were very close to each other throughout their married life. As he said, they were so close they were almost like one person. After his grandfather's death, his grandmother Ruth starts to read her husband's journals that he wrote in volumes, one for every year of their married life. In the journals it mentions that he goes to see a woman named Lillian every Christmas Eve and other times as well. It was a secret that he kept from Ruth and she and Will fear the worst. Ruth's Christmas wish is to know the answer to the mystery, and Will is determined to find out who Lillian was and why his grandfather would keep this a secret from the family. In his quest, Will finds the answer to this haunting family mystery and finds romance along the way. I would highly recommend this film.

Just an additional note that there is another movie called "A Christmas Wish" but it is a classic with Jimmy Durante & Terry Moore, and has a completely different storyline. I see that it is being incorrectly advertized on amazon as a Neil Patrick Harris film. So, I'm just mentioning it so that you get the one you want. I have both versions as I am a big fan of Christmas movies. This one, from 1998, is only available used at this time.

Living a life of humility and forgiveness.......2004-12-05

This movie is about a man that walked in humility and forgiveness. It is not about 'Doogie' Howser OR Debbie Reynolds although they are both brilliant actors. The main theme forms around a grandfather that leaves his grandson a wonderful legacy: how to live in humility and truly love your fellowman. A mystery is uncovered by the Grandmother (Debbie Reynolds)and shared with the grandson (Neil Patrick Harris). A Christmas entry into the Grandfather's journal 'visit Lillian' has them wondering, who is Lillian? The grandmother asks her grandson to please find out who Lillian is as her Christmas Gift from him. So, the adventure begins. Through his searching, he comes to know who his grandfather really is but it isn't until the last 5 minutes of the film that you find out who Lillian is...and, when you do, it will bring you to tears as it does to me every time I watch it. I highly recommend this film ... have a box of tissues close by.

debbie reynolds is supporting; a red-headed naomi watts is co-lead w/doogie howser. it is not exactly mulholland dr or 21grams, but watts does about as well as anyone could w/the woman who helps doogie solve the mystery, not debbie reynolds.
watts plays the former loyal secretary of doogie's father & now
single mother of another precocious kid, like the ring. she also looks good in tights as a ballet instructor.

the real draw is naomi watts. debbie reynolds is now las vegas royalty, but where is doogie howser now?

I seen this movie a few years ago and look forward to seeing it every year. This year I will see it more then once, I bought it. There is romance, mystery, and an old holiday feel to this movie evrybody should like!

Although it's now more of a curiosity and a quaint reminder of a time when movies possessed a quality of innocence that has long since vanished, The Great Rupert was something of a marvel when it was released in 1950. Produced by special-effects pioneer George Pal, who had delighted audiences of the 1940s with his innovative series of Puppetoon shorts, this charming comedy employs Pal's technique of animated puppetry to bring life to the title character--a lovable trained squirrel that comes to the rescue of a down-and-out family of vaudeville performers in the depths of the Great Depression.

Jimmy Durante leads the struggling clan, barely able to pay rent in a converted garage adjoining the home of a man who's been stockpiling lucrative investment dividends in the floorboard between the two homes. From his cubbyhole in the wall, resourceful Rupert has been tossing wads of $100 bills to Durante's wife, who thinks it's cash from heaven! Ol' Jimmy cracks wise with ancient puns and one-liners, making this a treat for Durante fans looking for squeaky-clean family entertainment. And once he's saved the day for all involved, furry-tailed Rupert goes back to his own vaudeville gig with his devoted owner, played by another veteran of vaudeville, Jimmy Conlin. It's all a bit too sweet by today's tarnished standards, but The Great Rupert stands as a testament to George Pal's optimistic spirit and creative imagination, which would later bless the productions of such films as The Time Machine and The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao. --Jeff Shannon

A charming and wholesome 1950 holiday film about a New York family (led by Durante) who are down on their luck at Christmas time. Shortly before Christmas, they move into a ground floor apartment building where Rupert the squirrel lives in the attic rafters. Just when it seems that the holiday will come and go without so much as a Christmas tree, Rupert acts as the family's beneficent guardian angel - not only saving Christmas, but changing their lives forever. (Originally titled The Great Rupert, the title has been changed to A Christmas Wish, which more adequately describes the story and showcases the delightful holiday theme.)

This was a very innocent movie and we enjoyed it...all ages were having fun with the film. The kids were interested in people they never heard of, cars they hadn't seen before, and the clothing people wore at that time in the 1950's. The plot was cute; no need for censorship with this one. What a delight.

destined to become a Christmas favorite at our house.......2007-01-18

I love old movies, especially at Christmas time. We already had It's a Wonderful Life and White Christmas in our DVD collection but decided to try some other oldies but goodies. I wouldn't put this one on the same level as the other two I mentioned but the squirrel (Rupert) in this picture is too funny. The story line is just hilarious. The landlord hides his money in the wall where the squirrel's nest is. The squirrel throws the money out a hole in the other side of the wall and the down-on-their-luck tennants receive "money from heaven!" just as the mom is praying for new shoes for her daughter.

The town's people can't figure out how these newcomers are making so much money - maybe they're gangsters? The police AND the IRS show up at their door asking questions. There is a romance involved between the poor tennants' daughter and the wealthy landlord's son. It was a very entertaining movie overall!

Very Mild Mannered and Entirely Inoffensive.......2005-11-15

When a slightly miserly landlord takes to hiding his savings he inadverdently intrudes into a squirrel's nest--which wastes no time in shoving the money out of his nest and into the hands of the down-on-their-luck Amendola family, who rent an apartment below. Originally released under the title of THE GREAT RUPERT, in 1950 the film was primarily admired for its then-artful blend of live action and puppet animation to create Rupert, the squirrel; today, however, it is best regarded as a very mild mannered and entirely inoffensive little movie that just happens to offer the legendary Jimmy Durante one of his final film roles.

The script and story are as memorable as school cafeteria banana pudding, but the performances are reasonably engaging. As head of Amendola family, Durante is brash is only Durante could be, doing doubletakes and pounding out an occasional tune on the piano in his unique style. He is well supported by the likes of Terry Moore, Tom Drake, and such veteran character actors as Queenie Smith, Frank Orth, Sara Haden, and Jimmy Conlin. It's all in good fun.

The 20th Century Fox release consists of two versions of the film: the original black and white and a colorized version. There is nothing visually impressive about the film, so it is not hurt by colorization per se; as for the colorization, it is reasonably well done, at least so far as such effects go. Most astonishingly, the release includes a commentary track by Terry Moore and various people associated with the colorization and the DVD release.

The commentary track is not tremendously informative; Moore freely admits that she had seen the film only once before, and that some fifteen years earlier. Even so, Moore proves good company, offers the occasional insight into the cast, and now and then proves unwittingly amusing--with her comments on actor Tom Drake, who was both gay and deeply closeted, a case in point. On the whole, I'd say the commentary is actually more engaging than the film itself, but whatever the case Durante fans, Moore fans, and those in search of truly innocent family fare should find it pleasing.

A sweet and gentle family film.......2005-11-03

"A Christmas Wish" (AKA "The Great Rupert") is a sweet and gentle film with a quiet reminder about the true meaning of Christmas. I recently found this film by accident, and I am glad I did. Most, if not all, contemporary "holiday" films are only marketing devices used to sell useless junk to kids. Fortunately, "A Christmas Wish" pre-dates this era, having been made in the late 1940's-early 1950's when Hollywood made many, many great kid-friendly films that had real stories and demonstrated great imagination. I am thinking of the "Lassie" films, "My Friend Flicka", "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T", etc. "A Christmas Wish", in my opinion, belongs with this group. I especially love the optimism and humor of the character played by the great Jimmy Durante. Where, in a contemporary film, will you find a father who isn't a drug dealer, or pimp, or hit man, or a crook of some kind? Or where parents, and kids, are not portrayed as morons who exist only to consume? No, you have to go back to films like "A Christmas Wish" for portrayals of human beings who have positive things to offer. I am so glad this film has been restored. The dvd edition offers the film in two versions, B&W and colorized. The B&W version is crisp and clear. I have not watched the colorized version, as I do not subscribe to the concept.

Holiday Wishes and Three Non-Related Joe Episodes.......2005-12-31

"Blue's Room Holiday Wishes" contanins one of the best episodes of the mini-series "Blue's Room" and three Season 5 "Blue's Clues" episodes that aren't really related to the holidays.

"Holiday Wishes," which is going by the title "Blue's Room Holiday" on this DVD, features the Blue's Room characters all celebrating the holidays. For the most part, they're celebrating Christmas, but there's also talk of Hanukkah. And, most importantly, there's the only visit ever to Blue's Room from our good friend, Joe! They light a candle for him to help guide the way. They also create their own version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas."

The other episodes on this DVD are all from Season 5 of "Blue's Clues." They are "Can You Help?" "Look Carefully..." and "Patience." While they don't seem to fit into any single theme, they are all good episodes and only one of them features the infamous talking and singing clues.

Joe and the other characters often need our help, but "Can You Help?" is an entire episode devoted to this them. We help Joe find the clues (as always), help Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper make blueberry pancakes and do many other helpful things.

In "Look Carefully..." Blue, Joe and our friends all make careful observations of things. They even get to go into a game show parody with a Big Booming Announcer who plays video clips and then does quizzes on what happened in them.

Appropriately, the last episode is "Patience" --- one of the most important episodes of the show because it introduces the character Baby Bird, who shows up in many episodes later on. It features a great, simple song throughout --- "Wait. Wait. Wait. What can we do while we wait?" This tune uses the same music from a tune from a classic Steve episode --- "Change. Change. Change. How can we change?" This one also has a game (though not quite game show) parody --- Joe skidoos with Blue to find a clue and they play The Waiting Game.

As usual with most Nick Jr. TV show DVD releases, the special features are nothing to shout about. There's a fairly simple game in which you look for holiday objects in Blue's Room. There are Blue's Room short spots --- these are actually pretty good. There are trailers and promos for other video and DVD releases. Finally, there's Nicktrition tips, which I imagine can probably also be found on the official Nick Jr. website.
