5 out of 5 stars Fresh Prince Rocks!!!!.......2007-01-09

I bought this for my son who is 10 years old. Here is his review: This season was soooo funny. I first started watching Fresh Prince in re-runs on TV and I loved it, so I bought the fourth season. It was great. And then when I got the first season, it was even better. The first four episodes on this DVD have an extended theme song. If you are a Fresh Prince fan, you'll love the first season.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarity at its finest!.......2006-09-01

This marks the first season in an impressive run for a show that debuted Will Smith the actor. After years of success in the music industry, Will Smith diversifies by starring in his own sitcom. The result: episode after episode of hilarity.

For those unfamiliar with the premise of the show, allow me to fill you in. Will Smith is a high schooler from West Philly, whose mother sends him out to Bel Air to live with his uncle and aunt. Being from a rough background, Will's new posh surroundings don't always allow for a smooth transition period. Therein lies the hilarity.

The jokes about Uncle Phil's weight, Carlton's "lack of blackness" and Geoffrey's dead-pan dry humour remains "fresh" (pardon the pun) after all these years. Will Smith is a natural right from episode one, and through the first season we see growth in his acting skills.

Besides being unbelievably funny, the show often has strong statements to make about racism, honesty, social class struggles, and more. But don't worry, not an episode will go by where you don't find yourself laughing out loud.

Extra features are limited to one short featurette about the show's birth. While it is definitely an interesting bonus, it would have been nice if there had been a little more "stuff". No interviews with Will, in fact, the only three main characters from whom we hear are Uncle Phil, Ashley, and Geoffrey.

Still this season is so awesome that I can't help but give it a full 5-star rating!

The fourth season of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (which aired on television for six years) finds Will (Will Smith) and Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) as college freshmen trying to fit in on campus. Carlton's mom, Vivian, who was played by Janet Hubert-Whitten, is now portrayed by the attractive but not-as-funny Daphne Maxwell Reid. And supermodel Tyra Banks shows up as Will's latest girlfriend, Jackie. While not quite as strong as the series' first two years, this fourth season--which aired from 1993 to 1994--still packs plenty of laughs. Smith, who at the time was busily parlaying his TV success into a film career, had not yet become a huge movie star. His charm and likeability were more important at this time than his acting skills, but Smith's charisma is undeniable. Whether he's manipulating his indulgent uncle Philip (James Avery), bossing around his bumbling cousin Carlton, or basically pimping out his other cousin Hilary (Karyn Parsons) to a professor in order to get a good grade, Will comes across as a good boy who does stupid things. There is always a lesson learned and, just as often, a lesson forgotten. Though played for laughs, the series also deals with serious subject matters in an evenhanded way. After Philip is told to diet and exercise, Will thinks he's doing his uncle a favor by sneaking him fatty meals. When Philip has a heart attack, Will has to deal with the consequences of what he did. Did he give Philip the snacks to make his uncle happy, or because it made him feel good to go against authority? When Will is accepted into a snooty African-American fraternity that rejects Carlton, he learns what it's like to discriminate against your own people.

Some of the characters on The Fresh Prince by now have overstayed their welcome. Hilary has become a caricature of the spoiled and ineffectual rich girl. And as with many sitcoms based around their young stars, Philip and Vivian are superfluous add-ons now. But Carlton's baby sister Ashley (Tatyana Ali), who is growing into a lovely young woman, exhibits spunky exuberance as she tackles the rituals of dating and trying to show her parents she's not a little girl anymore. Ali also gets to show off her singing chops this season, tackling Aretha Franklin's "Respect." As for the show's celebrity guest stars (Donald Trump, Hugh Hefner), it's Smith's former rapping partner DJ Jazzy Jeff who makes the most refreshing appearance as (what else?) Will's buddy from back in the day. --Jae-Ha Kim

5 out of 5 stars Season 5 anyone.....?.......2007-07-05

The first 4 season were great, now I have been waiting for season 5 for a long time now as have others on here but still no release. I heard on the grapeving that they were not going to release seasons 5 and 6 on DVD, which to me is unfair to fans of the show who have collected the first 4 seasons and wish to own the whole series. There are enough fans to make it feasible, so what the hold up. If anyone else know more information please share it, or if there is someone we can contact lets do it. We (the customers) demand the other season be released.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Show of All-Time.......2007-03-06

Season 4 is one of my favorite seasons.

I'm waiting for the last two. So far I haven't seen any news on the fifth season yet. Below is the release schedule thus far:

Feb. 8, 2005
Oct. 11, 2005 (8 months)
Feb. 14, 2006 (4 months)
Aug. 8, 2006 (6 months)

So far it is March and no news from tvshowsondvd yet about the next release. We at about the 7 month mark, and therefore I'm expecting to see the next season released this spring, and I desire to see the sixth season released before the end of the year. I hope they don't fall behind their reasonable release schedule, although it would be nice if studios put all seasons of shows on DVD much sooner than releasing them over a few year period.

One thing I will not accept is if they decide not to put out the last two seasons. That would be a great evil because you can't go this far and then stop. That is what encourages piracy.

4 out of 5 stars Sweetness.......2007-01-28

This was amazing and hilarious and that's about all I can say is wow.

4 out of 5 stars "But it'll cut into my trick-or-treating time!".......2007-01-27

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - The Complete Fourth Season

The fourth season of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" isn't the best season but it still had a lot of funny episodes. The first two episodes are probably the funniest, especially the second one where Hilary's fiancé Trevor hurts himself bungee-jumping on TV. Philip then says, "Let's just hope Trevor's okay." Cut to the next scene, everyone's in black and Philip says, "Well, it was a lovely service."

The problem with this season was the new Vivian. Daphne Maxwell-Reid is a good actress but it's hard to top Janet Hubert-Whitten's version. Janet made Vivian feisty and a take-no-mess type while Daphne's sterile version made it hard to watch (the writers must have known that too, maybe that's why Daphne wasn't in that many episodes). The good news with that is that the focus shifts from Vivian and onto the other characters, which in turn makes them stronger (see Will in "Papa's Got a Brand New Excuse" - my favorite episode).

The problem with the DVD set is that it looks rushed. Even the menu appears half-hearted compared to previous "Fresh Prince" sets. Also, there are no special features at all - but I guess that's not a big loss because all I usually watch are the episodes and the special features in previous sets weren't all that special, as someone mentioned earlier.

This season shows that the show wasn't on its death bed just yet. That would happen during the last season. -EJR

Before he became one of the biggest movie stars in the world, Will Smith (Independence Day, Men in Black) spent six seasons as a poor kid from Philadelphia who gets sent to his wealthy aunt and uncle in California to learn some class--leading to a classic sitcom collision of street smarts and pampered privilege. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - The Complete Second Season finds the show in a happy groove. Will and the Banks family snipe and bicker cheerfully while grappling with problems ranging from true-to-life to truly preposterous. The more realistic side of life is found in episodes such as when Will's mother Vy (Vernee Watson-Johnson) has a new boyfriend and Will gets jealous, or when Will finds himself attracted to a girl (Queen Latifah, Bringing Down the House), but won't take her to the prom because she's overweight. The ridiculous side bursts out when Will and his pompous cousin Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) decide to make money by becoming strippers.

But whether realistic or silly, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air stays a crisp, clean sitcom, with snappy writing and brisk, capable interplay among the cast, which also included James Avery and Janet Hubert-Whitten as Mr. and Mrs. Banks, the tolerant and usually sensible parents; Karyn Parsons as the spoiled, narcissistic Hilary; Tatyana M. Ali as the cute, sassy Ashley; and Joseph Marcell as the droll British butler Geoffrey. Despite living in a fantasyland of wealth, the show regularly touched on racial and class issues--lightly, but not turning a blind eye to the complexities of American life. When Will's aunt Janice (Charlayne Woodard, The Crucible) wants to marry a white man, Vy refuses to accept the match; Geoffrey falls in love with a neighbor, but rejects her when he learns that she's an heiress and not a housekeeper. The writers are clever enough to subvert expectations, such as when Will loses a basketball game so another player can catch the eye of a pro scout--only to learn that the other player thinks professional sports are an absurd gamble and doesn't want that kind of career. Through it all, Will Smith kept the show from being just a showcase for himself; he's secure enough to let the other actors take the spotlight, but carries episodes easily when they're built around him. No longer a rookie in this season, his comic chops start to equal his cocky charm, making the second season particularly strong. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Will Smith stars as a teenager from inner city Philadelphia who's sent to California to live with his wealthy relatives in the hopes that they will "straighten him out and teach him some good old-fashioned values. On Season 2, Bel-Air is starting to feel like the hood for Will. His Philly roots run deep, but even a street-smart rapper can wrap his mind around croissants and credit cards and his arms around upscale hotties. Guest stars include Queen Latifah, Milton Berle and Zsa Zsa Gabor.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-03-10

I was so excited to see all the episodes. I have seen many of them on TV but the fresh prince is so funny

5 out of 5 stars The magic continues.......2006-09-21

This series picks up right where the show left off in season 1 with a whole lot more hilarity! The actors really seem to embrace their roles even more in this season, resulting in more realistic conversations and exchanges of insults. Of course, Will gets the upper hand, as he should! This DVD set is packaged in just a slightly different manner than the first, although its contents are similar. The menus are exactly the same (aside from the dance sequences shown beside the menu options). The "special features" (and I use that term reluctantly) are still found on the 4th disk. Unfortunately, one of the special features re-caps the highlights of the season and gives us "pop-up video"-style trivia about some of the actors, some of the jokes, and more. The other one shows bloopers from season 2. This would be awesome if they were different from the ones that run during the credits at the end of the show! But for the most part, they are not.

As far as the episodes themselves, they are high quality! Most of the jokes are clean but hilarious, although you may have your kids asking you questions about some of the "adult" content. Here are some of the episodes that highlight this wonderful season:

DID THE EARTH MOVE FOR YOU?: Will and his girlfriend get trapped in a room during an earthquake.
THE MOTHER OF ALL BATTLES: Will and Carlton try to help Ashley out with her bully problems at school.
GUESS WHO'S COMING TO MARRY?: One of Will's aunts causes a controversy in the family when she plans to marry a white guy.
SHE AIN'T HEAVY: Will finds the perfect woman - only problem: she's overweight.
CASED UP: Will finds himself in court when Hillary's boyfriend, an aspiring lawyer played by Malcolm Jamal Warner, sues him for damages to his car.
SOMETHING FOR NOTHING: Will wins $1,000 at a country club fundraiser but lands himself in trouble when he does not donate the money back to them.
CHRISTMAS SHOW: The Smith family ski trip ends up being not-so-merry when the family is robbed of all their possessions.
MY BROTHER'S KEEPER: Will learns a valuable lesson when his biggest basketball rival lives in the hood and struggles just to stay alive.
ILL WILL: Will winds up in the hospital with tonsilitis, and the Banks family worries that Geoffrey is writing down all their dirty secrets.
EYES ON THE PRIZE: Will has to choose between Jazz and Tyriq to be his partner on a TV game show.
BE MY BABY TONIGHT: Ashley asks Will about sex, which throws the entire family into a panic about her new boyfriend.
STRIP TEASE FOR TWO: Will and Carlton become male strippers to earn enough money to buy back Vivian's bracelet that they pawned off.

This season is filled with moments guaranteed to have you laughing out loud and quoting the lines to friends and family members. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best shows ever........2006-05-29

I used to watch this all the time when I was a kid, and I still love it today. Will Smith was hilarious on this show, and it really helped to catapult him to super-stardom. I loved how he was always making fun of Carlton, who was always just so goofy, and kind of full of himself. And it was also hilarious how Will used to dress back then, with the weird, multi-colored shirts, and that crazy high flat-top hairdo that all the black guys had 15 years ago. Nostalgic in a fun way. Anyway, great show, and a beloved part of my childhood.

Oh, and the theme song was the first song I ever learned how to play on the drums.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's third season simultaneously provided some of the best and worst episodes of the show's six-year run. Set up as a classic collision of streets and society, the show soon found Will (Will Smith) beginning to adapt a little too well to his upper-crust home. He transfers to the same prep academy as Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro), peruses Ivy League colleges, and truly starts to believe everything comes to him easily. Two spoiled characters (Carlton and Hilary, played by Karyn Parsons) are tolerable, but three begins to get grating. Five is even worse, if you count parents Philip and Vivian Banks (James Avery and Janet Hubert-Whitten), who jumped on the whining bandwagon just enough for their tired butler, Geoffrey (Joseph Marcell) to abruptly quit for one episode.

While strong family core values remained the show's focus (Avery and Hubert-Whitten are good role models for parents who don't try to be their children's buddy), Will became less of a good-natured jokester and more of a flagrant womanizer, going as far as to trick an abstinent girl (Kim Fields) into thinking they had married to get her into bed. Other less entertaining storylines included Philip's run for Superior Court judge against his sleazy mentor (Sherman Helmsley), and Will's possession of drugs, which Carlton accidentally consumes and nearly dies from (leading to the first of Smith's clumsy attempts at teary confrontations; in later seasons he would prove more successful at them). The show also wrote in Hubert-Whitten's pregnancy resulting in a new baby for the Banks, and gave Hilary a "real" job as a weather girl. Season three's highlights include the Banks family's appearance on Oprah, and more instances of Carlton's famous dance to Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual" -- with guest appearance by Jones as his guardian angel. And that, we can never get enough of.--Ellen A. Kim

Description

There's a lot hip-hoppenin' in the Fresh Prince's third season showcased in this fabulous 4-Disc Set: Philip runs for Superior Court judge (and runs into plenty of comic complications). Vivian develops a taste for sardines and Rocky Road (guess who's pregnant). Hilary lands a gig as a TV weather reporter (although she probably thinks an occluded front is a new kind of bustier). But the biggest story is that Will is ready to graduate. He's checking colleges (including sororities from alpha to gamma to bad-mama jamma). And choking when his mom wants him to come back to Philly ? because this homeboy realizes that home now means the fly flair of Bel-Air!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Will Smith!.......2007-09-14

My son just loves these shows! I know it's a tad cheesy but still good to watch with family.

5 out of 5 stars The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - The 1992-1993 season (Season #3).......2007-01-20

I am 11 Years Old, and I Love the "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", In The 1992-1993 year, more comedy rolls in with Will (Will Smith) returns from Philadelphia with a new look, accepting gifts from a plain nerdy school girl, Special Guest Star, Sherman Hemsley (TV's "Amen" and "The Jeffersons"), stars as Judge Carl Robertson, running against Uncle Phil (James Avery), for Supreme Court Judge in the first four episodes, but returning his bigoted, and strong-willed role as George Jefferson in 1995, Hilary (Karyn Parsons) finds kisses and a job reporting weather, with her new co-anchor, Trevor (Brian Stokes Mitchell, TV's "Roots"), Ashley (Tatyana Ali) dresses outreageously to impress a boy (Larenz Tate, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", "Ray", "Menace to Society"), Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro "TV's Silver Spoons") becomes a father to his ex-girlfriend, (Lark Voorhies "Saved by The Bell"), Geoffrey (Joseph Marcell) wins the jackpot, leaving the Banks' family, but soon realizes, that Carlton and Will tricked him into winning the lottery, More Special Guest Stars, Vanessa Williams ("The Jacksons: An American Dream", "Johnson Family Vacation", "Light It Up"), Kim Fields (TV's "Living Single" and "Facts of Life"), D.L. Hughley (TV's "The Hughleys").

The 3rd Season Jumped the shark, when Janet Hubert-Whitten, who portrays mother and wife, Vivian Banks, left due to a salary dispute with cast members, and pregnancy to her child, after the episode "The Way We Were", that marked Janet Hubert-Whitten's final appearance on the show, in the last couple of episodes to come in the third season, her character was explained by written out, until the new cast member replaces her as the New Vivian Banks (Daphne Maxwell Reid, TV's "Snoops", "Frank's Place", "CBS' Summertime Playhouse") in The Fourth Season until the last episode in 1996. I Still Loved the show, and i will hope that i will get the 3rd Season, Sometime to come!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Series, good value.......2007-05-12

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a great series, and with this set you can easily enjoy tons of episodes. I have nothing to complain about, and I would highly recommend this series to anyone who likes Will Smith.

Pros:
Tons of hilarious episodes

Cons:
The 4th season box doesn't have the number four on the side, and if you have OCD like me, it bothers you because it doesn't match the first 3 seasons.
Seriously, thats it.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Prince is Fresh Funny.......2007-01-09

This dude us to hilarious. I really didn't get a chance to watch these, but I'm glad to have bought the first four seasons at one time. I watch these over and over and can not wait until the other seasons to be released.

Description

Will Smith stars as a teenager from inner city Philadelphia who's sent to California to live in with his wealthy relatives in the hopes that they will "straighten him out and teach him some good old-fashioned values." Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: The Complete First Season is a 4-disc collection set featuring lively bonus material plus all 24 Season-One Episodes, from Will's first day at the country club (which one is the fish fork?) to his first day at Bel-Air Prep School (sort of homeboy meets Harvard). When it comes to comedy, Fresh Prince rules! In Season Two, Bel-Air is starting to feel like the hood for Will. His Philly roots run deep, but even a street-smart rapper can wrap his mind around croissants and credit cards and his arms around upscale hotties.
