A coming-of-age story starring a bunch of fiftysomething stars rather than teenage actors, Wild Hogs is a well-intentioned comedy starring John Travolta (Woody), Tim Allen (Doug), Martin Lawrence (Bobby), and William H. Macy (Dudley) as a group of Midwesterners facing their own versions of mid-life crises. They decide to escape their frazzled personal lives and rejuvenate themselves by taking a road trip on their slick hogs. But their journey is less Easy Rider than it is Three Amigos (plus one). As individual actors, each lead is a formidable star. But throw them all together into one crammed screenplay full of scatological humor and uncomfortable homosexual gags and it doesn't quite work. The actors spend so much time trying to outdo each other on screen that they aren't believable as friends, much less comrades. Walt Becker (National Lampoon's Van Wilder) offers minimal direction on a film that could've used some reining in, especially during scenes between Macy and Marisa Tomei (as a diner owner who inexplicably falls for him). There are promises of some interesting vignettes when Ray Liotta shows up as Jack, the leader of a real motorcycle gang. When Jack threatens to break Dudley's legs, Dudley counters, "I'm a computer programmer! I don't need my legs." Without missing a beat, Jack says, "Fine, we'll break his hands." It's not that the lines are so funny, but they way Liotta delivers them that adds some life to this flailing comedy. Unfortunately, his scenes with the rest of the cast are all too few. --Jae-Ha Kim

Description

Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence and William H. Macy star in Wild Hogs, the hysterically funny comedy about four weekend-warrior friends who decide to rev up their ho-hum suburban lives with a cross-country motorcycle adventure. They don their leathers, fire up their hogs and throw caution and their cell phones to the wind as they hit the open highway. A lot can happen on the road to nowhere, including a run-in with the bad-to-the-bone Del Fuegos, a real biker gang who don't take kindly to the wannabes. Filled with hilarious misadventures, screwball situations and madcap mayhem, this laugh-out-loud comedy is a movie your whole family will go hog wild over.

4 out of 5 stars It takes swan to know swan . . ........2007-09-17

Simon Pegg is a hoot as Sergeant Nicholas Angel, a Metropolitan copper so good at his job, he makes everyone else look bad. He's transferred to the supposedly quiet village of Sandford, Gloucestershire as punishment for his success -- where, of course, he stumbles onto a series of murders made to look like accidents and can't get the local constabulary to take him seriously. But everything changes when he puts on the dark glasses and puts the hammer down. From there, it's an unbelievable mix of shoot-outs, car chases, slo-mo action, and numerous similar homages to the films of John Woo and others. It's unusual for a film to be successful as both a high-octane action flick AND a dryly hilarious comedy, but this one manages it.

5 out of 5 stars Magic!.......2007-09-16

When I lived in England in the late 70's a popular phrase for something that would work out just right was "Magic".
If you enjoy satire, and or British humor, and aren't offended by TERRIBLE language, then this is a fabulous send up of the "Action / Cop/ Buddy" genre of film.

If you enjoyed what these blokes did to the "Zombie" genre in "Shaun of the Dead" you should love this movie, which starts abit slower, but when it gets going... Magic!

5 out of 5 stars if there were 10 stars..........2007-09-15

This movie is terrific! seriuosly. you want a good laugh, a good mystery and a bit of gore, then this one is for you. I loved "Shauna of the Dead" so I was hoping for a good movie... but it is way better then that. FUNNY!

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-09-13

I was waiting to see this and it left me with a bad taste. The movie does have some good in it but I was expecting more. Some of the scenes were slow paced. A standard film.

4 out of 5 stars It Has Action Flicks "Pegg-ed".......2007-09-13

The creative forces behind the comedic take on zombie flicks, "Shaun of the Dead," give us their interpretation of "every action movie ever made" with "Hot Fuzz." Fans of "Dead" will immediately notice headliner Simon Pegg as Nicholas Angel, a London policeman who's excellence in service forces his superiors to ship him to a small country town in order to protect their own reputations. "Dead" fans will also recognize his bumbling sidekick played by Nick Frost. The duo quickly find plenty of trouble in their normally quiet town. A large number of "accidents" occur that peak the interest of supercop Angel. As the body count grows, Angel's list of suspects gets even larger. Who's causing the accidents? What action film isn't referenced? It's all here in this superb comedy.

Edgar Wright's hard-cutting, musically driven direction style is all over this film. Once again, fans of "Dead" will pick up on all of Wright's nuances as the story rolls along. The action is fast, loud, and over-the-top. It's also pretty gruesome and hilarious at the same time. Pegg is dead on as Angel. Despite his small stature you honestly believe that he's the ultimate police officer. Frost is perfect as the local idiot who only has a job because his dad's the chief inspector. The rest of the cast reads like a who's who of British film. Jim Broadbent, Timothy Dalton, Bill Nighy, Martin Freeman and Billie Whitelaw are just a few of the actors you'll find (some with large roles and others with just a blink of the eye's screen time). Each and every person in this film hams it up perfectly and appears to have had fun with the film.

The action sequences are all pretty convincing. Even the scenes that involve sweet old ladies packing automatic heat on a bicycle come off superbly.

The DVD is nice. The extras are pretty decent, especially the Fuzz-O-Meter and "The Man Who Would Be Fuzz." Overall, though, I'd buy this disc for the movie and not the extras.

If you enjoy spoofs (but not silly ones like "Epic Movie"), check out "Hot Fuzz." It's a lot smarter and funnier than you'd expect from a spoof. If you're a fan of "Shaun of the Dead," consider this film already a part of your library. It's only a matter of time before you buy it. Highly recommended.

From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

1 out of 5 stars Terrible movie - don't waste your money or your time.......2007-09-03

Our family enjoys many Disney movies (Mulan, Peter Pan, Fox & the Hound, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, etc.), but Little Mermaid is terrible! I can't believe this plot was developed anytime after 1950. 16-year-old mermaid "falls in love" with prince after seeing him once (never actually speaks with him), gives up everything (family/talent/etc.) to see him again. If you are looking for a strong female role model, watch Mulan - it is amazing. If you are looking for a girl-gets-prince movie, watch Cinderella - it is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars The Little Mermaid.......2007-08-24

Disney never seems to let us down with the classics. Great movie and songs.

5 out of 5 stars How can anyone not like this?.......2007-08-23

This is an all-time classic. I dont know anybody who hasnt seen it. Its a magical, beautiful film that you can watch over and over. And who doesnt know the words to every song? It doesn't get any better than this.

5 out of 5 stars The Little Mermaid.......2007-08-21

Like all the other "Disney Princess" movies, The Little Mermaid is great. The DVD came with all kinds of cool bonus features. Some people have said that the restoration was good, and if that is your case: get a new tv, i had no problems with it whatsoever, the work they did was incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Cheated. I Got The Region 3 DVD. Only 1 Disc. "Jumping Jellyfish.".......2007-08-18

Walt Disney's classic under-the-sea coming-of-age film "The Little Mermaid" (loosely based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen) gets the 2-Disc Special Platinum Edition DVD treatment.

When I ordered this movie, I specifically ordered the 2-Disc edition, but I recieved the wrong one. I got stuck with the Region 3 DVD, which has only 1 disc and only several special features. As Sebastian would say,
"Jumping jellyfish." I was very disappointed.

On to the movie itself, however. The film is a classic, with songs by the Academy-Award winning team Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (who would go on to score "Beauty And The Beast," my all-time favourite movie) and wonderful characters (Ariel, Flounder, Sebastian and Scuttle, among others), the movie is a timeless classic your little girl will treasure forever. Rated G.

After the tight plotting and quirky intensity of Fargo, this casually amusing follow-up from the prolifically inventive Coen (Ethan and Joel) brothers seems like a bit of a lark, and the result was a box-office disappointment. The good news is, The Big Lebowski is every bit a Coen movie, and its lazy plot is part of its laidback charm. After all, how many movies can claim as their hero a pot-bellied, pot-smoking loser named Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who spends most of his time bowling and getting stoned? And where else could you find a hairnetted Latino bowler named Jesus (John Turturro) who sports dazzling purple footgear, or an erotic artist (Julianne Moore) whose creativity consists of covering her naked body in paint, flying through the air in a leather harness, and splatting herself against a giant canvas? Who else but the Coens would think of showing you a camera view from inside the holes of a bowling ball, or an elaborate Busby Berkely-styled musical dream sequence involving a Viking goddess and giant bowling pins? The plot--which finds Lebowski involved in a kidnapping scheme after he's mistaken for a rich guy with the same name--is almost beside the point. What counts here is a steady cascade of hilarious dialogue, great work from Coen regulars John Goodman and Steve Buscemi, and the kind of cinematic ingenuity that puts the Coens in a class all their own. Be sure to watch with snacks in hand, because The Big Lebowski might give you a giddy case of the munchies. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Not always hard on the logic enough.......2007-08-23

A simple film of total disorganization that is supposed to be funny. It is another "Pulp Fiction", but this time in chronological cutting order. The disorganized impression comes from the totally airy and eerie behavior of the characters. One more or less fake Jew who respects Sabbath when it is practical. An unemployed idler who lives on thin air, fresh water and all kinds of little gains and benefits he can find. A third rather detached younger one who will end up with a massive heart attack on a parking lot. They all play with theirs balls, I mean their bowling balls, because that is the only profession we know they have. Then they get entangled into some kind of embezzling by some rich man who is not rich but wants to pilfer some good amount of cash from the foundation he is a trustee of and at the same time get rid of his youngish latest wife who is hardly grown out of teenage puberty, without going through a divorce. Simple when you are as naïve as dumb can be and you don't know the alpha from the beta, not to mention the omega of crime in LA where you can end up playing the angel in no time. And they manage rather well since two will survive and one will die of too much emotion. Entertaining though slightly slow at times.

Easily one of the strangest movies I have ever seen, but oddly a title that I felt I needed to own. When I finally added it to my collection, I couldnt figure out why. This is a movie that should be watched by all. Even if you dont like it, you can still say you have seen it and tell your friends just how strange of a movie it really is.

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-08-16

Somehow, it never gets old. I've seen it a dozen times and still love it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie...........2007-08-05

This is prob in my top 10 favorate movies of all time. its a great buy and definently must have movie.

    5 out of 5 stars Goodman wins..........2007-08-04

This is a great and very funny film. A case of mistaken identity leads Jeff Bridges 'Dude' into all sorts of problems. The Dude is extremely laid back (stoned a lot) - the Coens wrote the part for Jeff Bridges.

A number scenes standout, but the Bowling Alley ones are particular favourites of mine. The cast are fantastic, and for me John Goodman as Vietnam Vet Walter just steals the acting honours. Walter is obsessed with Vietnam, to the point where he introduces Vietnam into any conversation regardless of whats being talked about. One of the very last scenes is an extremly funny example of this.

I've lent the film to a lot of people and there is a split with this film between those that love it and those that really don't get it. So if you're unsure catch it on TV or rent it. If you like it you will have to buy it and watch it again very quickly.

Only Joel and Ethan Coen, the fraternal director and producer team behind art-house hits such as The Big Lebowski and Fargo and masters of quirky and ultra-stylish genre subversion, would dare nick the plot line of Homer's Odyssey for a comic picaresque saga about three cons on the run in 1930s Mississippi. Our wandering hero in this case is one Ulysses Everett McGill, a slick-tongued wise guy with a thing about hair pomade (George Clooney, blithely sending up his own dapper image) who talks his chain-gang buddies (Coen-movie regular John Turturro and newcomer Tim Blake Nelson) into lighting out after some buried loot he claims to know of. En route they come up against a prophetic blind man on a railroad truck, a burly, one-eyed baddie (the ever-magnificent John Goodman), a trio of sexy singing ladies, a blues guitarist who's sold his soul to the devil, a brace of crooked politicos on the stump, a manic-depressive bank robber, and--well, you get the idea. Into this, their most relaxed film yet, the Coens have tossed a beguiling ragbag of inconsequential situations, a wealth of looping, left-field dialogue, and a whole stash of gags both verbal and visual. O Brother (the title's lifted from Preston Sturges's classic 1941 comedy Sullivan's Travels) is furthermore graced with glowing, burnished photography from Roger Deakins and a masterly soundtrack from T-Bone Burnett that pays loving homage to American '30s folk styles--blues, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, and more. And just to prove that the brothers haven't lost their knack for bad-taste humor, we get a Ku Klux Klan rally choreographed like a cross between a Nuremberg rally and a Busby Berkeley musical. --Philip Kemp

    Description

Disenchanted with the daily drudge of crushing rocks on a prison farm in Mississippi, the dapper, silver-tongued Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney, THE PERFECT STORM) busts loose. Except he's still shackled to his own chain-mates from the chain gang -- bad-tempered Pete (John Turturro, SUMMER OF SAM), and sweet, dimwitted Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson, HAMLET). With nothing to lose and buried loot to regain -- before it's lost forever in a flood -- the three embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this hilarious offbeat road picture. Populated with strange characters, including a blind prophet, sexy sirens, and a one-eyed Bible salesman (John Goodman, COYOTE UGLY), it's an odyssey filled with chases, close calls, near misses, and betrayal that will leave you laughing at every outrageous and surprising twist and turn.

5 out of 5 stars JUST TOO, TOO FUNNY!!!.......2007-09-14

This has got to be one of the funniest movies ever made. And one of the cleverest, too. Three guys escape from a chain gang, make a hit record, become "rock stars" of sorts without knowing it, escape an attack on them by the Ku Klux Klan, survive a flood, become honorary advisors to the Governor and live happily ever after. Along the way, one of them gets turned into a toad by sirens, gets squished, "comes back to life" where he, coincidentally, meets up with his fellow escapees in a movie theater which, just happens to be filled with inmates from the chain gang they escaped from. Interested? You should be. I have 2 young children and whenever we watch this movie they cannot stop laughing. Neither can I. Rent or buy this movie. Enjoy yourself!

    5 out of 5 stars O' Brother..........2007-08-23

This is a great movie! The plot is easy to follow and if you're well-read and a fan of Homer, the parallels will make you chuckle. The musical score is amazing and I bought it later just because I wanted to enjoy it outside of viewing the movie.

George Clooney and John Goodman make this movie shine.

5 out of 5 stars O Brother, Where Art Thou.......2007-08-15

What can anybody say about this movie! It's a real classic. Quirky, funny, sad, uplifting, delightful! Highlights the versatility of these fantastic actors, but it's not really George Clooney singing. A must-have for the film aficionado.

Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Concerned about getting an edited version? Read here........2007-09-06

I recently bought this for my dad for his birthday. I remember watching it when I was younger and I always liked it, but the version we had was recorded from TV and was terrible quality, especially because it is now almost 20 years old. It is an excellent series, but you can decide that for yourself if you choose to buy it.

My decision to write this review is designed to help the potential buyer who doesn't want to get ripped off. I read most of the reviews before buying this product, and time and time again I came accross people who complained about purchasing an edited version with much of the content removed. Many of those reviews were old, so I didn't know if I was getting a newer version with the whole story of some other version that was edited. Hopefully this will help.

It appears that Amazon sells 2 versions of the DVD (I know nothing about the VHS versions so this review does not apply to them). The version I bought (ASIN B00005Y6YB) is listed as 360 minutes in length and is ranked in the top 500 in Amazon's top sellers. It was released by Hallmark. The DVD box lists the run time as 6 hours, which is what you would expect after removing commercials an 8 hour TV miniseries that is split into 4 parts. Amazon's price is listed as $8.49.

Another version of the series (ASIN B00003IPFK) is listed as 360 minutes as well, but is listed at about #48,000 in the top sellers and is priced at $13.75 (only available from independent vendors). Seeing how few people bought this version and how much more it costs, I would avoid it.

The version I bought is ASIN B00005Y6YB and it is complete. Perhaps the people who gave bad reviews did not receive the same version I bought. Amazon lists the same reviews for both, so it's possible that people gave poor reviews to a different version and those reviews got mixed in with the complete version's reviews. If you want to be sure you are getting the complete series without editing, I would recommend searching the ASIN so that you don't have to pick and choose between versions. Be sure you check when you get the product that you have the full 6 hour version. I hope this helps!Lonesome Dove

The Music Man was one of the last great movie musicals from any studio, and it proved to be that rarest of events: a Broadway show that was measurably improved by its transition to the screen. Robert Preston made his musical debut--both live and on film--as "Professor" Harold Hill, the upbeat charlatan who promises to teach a small-town boys band by the "think system." But it's the part Preston was born to play and the one for which he will always be best remembered. Composer Meredith Willson based The Music Man on his own small-town Midwestern boyhood, circa 1912, a quasi-mythical place where the old-maid librarian looks and sings like Shirley Jones. The boy himself is an adorable Ron Howard, lisp-singing "Gary, Indiana." Willson's entire score, featuring a combination of what are now standards, such as "Goodnight My Someone" and "Till There Was You" and show-specific numbers ("Trouble," "76 Trombones"), is never less than infectious. This dazzling special edition is also as bright and sunny as any 4th of July in Iowa could ever hope to be. --Robert Windeler

    Description

Let 76 trombones lead the big parade from the Great White Way into your home. It's the Music Man, the screen version of one of Broadway's all-time blockbusters, a skyburst of Americana as irresistible as 4th of July fireworks. Robert Preston and Shirley J Year: 1962

4 out of 5 stars The Music Man is still good Music, Man.......2007-07-16

Meredith Wilson was responsible for some great music but he manages here to paint a beautiful picture of early 1900, Small Town America. He does this by skillful blending of dialect, story and, of course music that allows one to overlook a very improbable story line.

To an extent the production is stylized such that only Robert Preston could make the lead character believable. However, he had already lost much of the vitality the role required when the movie was made. And that is the productions weak point. The actors are clearly acting to support the interludes between the music. But the music is what makes the man.

5 out of 5 stars The Music Man.......2007-07-02

This exuberant, energetic adaptation of Meredith Wilson's hit Broadway musical is a bona fide marvel thanks to Robert Preston's virtuosic turn as the ultra-charming swindler. Homing in on small-town America in 1912, "Music Man" mixes nostalgic sentiment with real-world woes, memorably in the person of Ron Howard, who plays Marian's sullen younger brother Winthrop. Comedian Buddy Hackett adds levity as Hill's goofy sidekick, while Jones is a perfectly prim counterweight to Preston's engaging rogue. And let's not forget the songs: "Till There Was You" and the rollicking "76 Trombones" will leave you humming long after the lights go up.

3 out of 5 stars Great film. Poor picture quality.......2007-06-18

This is a classic musical film and I have nothing but glowing things to say about it, however on my 50" plasma television, the picture quality is sub par and I would love to see it remastered.

5 out of 5 stars My Guilty Pleasure!.......2007-09-04

When I got my HD-DVD player last year one of the titles I couldn't wait for was Big Lebowski. I hadn't seen it in several years and when I finally put it in the player, I was so glad I had waited. Not only is the picture and the sound excellent, but this is one of the greatest movies of all time.

The writing is so good. The acting is fantastic (Jeff and John's best acting performances by far). The comedy is still funny after 11 viewings. I still giggle to myself anytime I think about the scene where Walter jumps out of the car "To take the hill" and the machine gun is going off, while the Dude crashes into a telephone pole. Hilarious hilarious all the way through.

Apart from being my favorite movie with superb acting of the entire cast (including the dog and the toe) and the incredible dumb and hilarious dialogue which still manages to blow my socks off everytime I watch the movie, this version truly is a must have.
No matter which character you (try to) analyze, they are all insane and ingenious, funny and inspiring (except of course the nihilists...)
The HD DVD transfer is far better than anything that came out before. Brightest colors when needed, good natural ones in the shades, sharp as .... well, you almost cut your feet at the rug that used to tie the room together. Sound is perfect, what is there left to say?

    Product description

5 out of 5 stars Great adventure for everyone.......2007-08-18

I originally judged this movie as another mid life crisis movie. After getting the chance to watch this movie I must admit I was completly wrong. This movie is great. It's a fun comedy with great chemistry between the actors.

The adventure starts by introducing all four characters. Tim Allen, John Travolta, William Macy, and Martin Lawerence. Each character brings something special to the movie. I can say most of the movie I was laughing at loud because most of the humor is physical. There isn't a deep involved storyline so you don't have to worry about keeping track of much.

I would say this movie can be viewed by the entire family as it has few profanities and very little physical violence that is mainly comical. It is really one of the best comedies this year and should be a must view for anyone who wants a good laugh.

The blu-ray version is excellent with uncompressed sound and superb picture. A great addition to any collection.

...oh man this is one funny movie from beginning to end. It is about a group of four middle aged men who decide to take a road trip on motorcycles and be free. Somewhere in between they make a bike gang, the Fuegos pretty upset, and the Fuegos begin to track them down. Hilarious movie from beginning to end. Blue-Ray presentation is amazing (I was watching it in 1080i). This is a definitive for your growing BlueRay collection. A must!

The original cowriter and director of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was Alex Cox, whose earlier film Sid and Nancy suggests that Cox could have been a perfect match in filming Hunter S. Thompson's psychotropic masterpiece of "gonzo" journalism. Unfortunately Cox departed due to the usual "creative differences," and this ill-fated adaptation was thrust upon Terry Gilliam, whose formidable gifts as a visionary filmmaker were squandered on the seemingly unfilmable elements of Thompson's ether-fogged narrative. The result is a one-joke movie without the joke--an endless series of repetitive scenes involving rampant substance abuse and the hallucinogenic fallout of a road trip that's run crazily out of control. Johnny Depp plays Thompson's alter ego, "gonzo" journalist Raoul Duke, and Benicio Del Toro is his sidekick and so-called lawyer Dr. Gonzo. During the course of a trip to Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, they ingest a veritable chemistry set of drugs, and Gilliam does his best to show us the hallucinatory state of their zonked-out minds. This allows for some dazzling imagery and the rampant humor of stumbling buffoons, and the mumbling performances of Depp and Del Toro wholeheartedly embrace the tripped-out, paranoid lunacy of Thompson's celebrated book. But over two hours of this insanity tends to grate on the nerves--like being the only sober guest at a party full of drunken idiots. So while Gilliam's film may achieve some modest cult status over the years, it's only because Fear and Loathing is best enjoyed by those who are just as stoned as the characters in the movie. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Missing the Entire Point.......2007-09-16

Nothing against Las Vegas. I've never been their actually. But, given the rampant and uncontrolled unreality of the place, does a drug-addled tour through the place make it any more "unreal" or is it perhaps an interesting view of the entire bizarre scene?

He could have made the story about a couple of martians who went there for their vacation, but it wouldn't have been nearly as funny. Besides, the martians wouldn't have blended in nearly as well at the police convention and would not have been able to contribute their twisted view of the spectacle...

5 out of 5 stars the impossible accomplished..........2007-09-07

I think the best way to describe this film as ON THE ROAD meets THE NAKED LUNCH on 'shrooms... Road trip films, of course are a dime a dozen... this one, however, in my book holds its ground -- but its not for everybody.

I feel what's great about it is that it seems to accomplish the near impossible:
In the past films have been made about people messed up on drugs...
In all honesty, watching people tripping on acid is only amusing for so long... virtually anytime you see someone on acid do in a film eventually comes across as an exploitational cliche you've seen millions of times before... the big come down's and bad trips... the flashbacks, a good vomit... then Jack Webb comes out and lectures you on the dangers of reefer and dope...
Or how about when film let the viewer experience the trip by doing funny things with the color and sound of the film, or even suddenly having a reverse negative shot with a guy in a monster mask, and zooming to the horrified druggie screaming, "My face! My face! Some one's eaten my face!" - - that too is only interesting for so long...

But this film does something very different... It is a COHERENT road trip story as told through the eyes of a guy who's - - well very messed up on acid.... We take the trip with him literally - - and yes, the psychedelic imagery is there, but along with it are the people and places and the narrative... Amidst all the weirdness, the film is a delight to follow... and classic Gilliam (sick, bizarre and funny.) And yes, as the acid kicks in and out, things get strange... however, the narrative observations make the special effects more than special effects and guide you through the journey...

Ultimately, let's face it, Vegas may very well be a good symbol of all that is loathsome, cheap and sleazy in America - - and it is a place where often the real does meet the surreal in bad taste, but via the film and novel, the surrealism of "American Kiche", and the mundane and ridiculous are taken to an extreme that is well worth the watch...

In conclusion: A film NOT for everybody, but if you're like me, an amateur social anthropologist with a love from "schlockus americanus" as well as the 60's and 70's, and both fascination with and disdain for American popular culture, this is a film that is visually as well as intellectually entertaining... dare I even say funny. - - If however, you don't share this bizarre little fetish of mine and can't appreciate the film's cynical tongue in cheek humor... then I'll be honest: you won't like it very much.

P.S. If you like this film, I strongly suggest getting your hands on Zappa's 200 MOTELS if it ever gets reissued again. I also dare say if you liked it, you'd probably dig the FIRESIGN THEATRE as well...

5 out of 5 stars Three things about "Fear and Loathing".......2007-08-02

There's only three things I can say about this movie:
    1. It is the dark side of Cheech and Chong.
    2. It is Fellini on LSD.
    3. It is Gillian's best movie since "Brazil".

Does anyone understand this? I watched with my cat and my cat fell asleep. I think the movie is a tricky joke by the bald man with the half-hair on his face sides (is he the teenager police from Telemundo Jump Show?) No movie would have a toaster in the bath. Why does the half-hair face man talk out of the side of his mouth? Why do they like riding horses that are not real? This movie has silly hair and sneaky talkings; I would say not to watch with any animals, especially sleepy cat.
