Ocean's Eleven improves on 1960's Rat Pack original with supernova casting, a slickly updated plot, and Steven Soderbergh's graceful touch behind the camera. Soderbergh reportedly relished the opportunity "to make a movie that has no desire except to give pleasure from beginning to end," and he succeeds on those terms, blessed by the casting of George Clooney as Danny Ocean, the title role originated by Frank Sinatra. Fresh out of jail, Ocean masterminds a plot to steal $163 million from the seemingly impervious vault of Las Vegas's Bellagio casino, not just for the money but to win his ex-wife (Julia Roberts) back from the casino's ruthless owner (Andy Garcia). Soderbergh doesn't scrimp on the caper's comically intricate strategy, but he finds greater joy in assembling a stellar team (including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and Carl Reiner) and indulging their strengths as actors. The result is a film that's as smooth as a silk suit and just as stylish. --Jeff Shannon

The best out of the trilogy.......2007-08-31
*Spoilers*
Other than being a parade of Hollywood's hunkiest. Ocean Eleven has a good, solid story. Danny Ocean fresh out of the joint can't take being on the straight and narrow, plus he wants his wife back. Lucky for him and his gang-she just so happens to be dating a powerfully rich casino owner. Instead of taking his anger and frustration out of her, he figures the way to win her back is to rob her boyfriend and prove to her that the casino owner would choose his money over her. Is this even a question? We're not talking about $20. Daniel was trying to steal 163 million dollars. Not to betray my sex, but no woman is worth that amount of money. And it's an unfair question because Daniel would most likely choose the money too. Because by his own question, he could have given it back and simply taken Tess. But that minor fact seems to escape Tess and she goes running back to her hubby. Other than, this is a slick sort of hustle from a team that should be in the circus. Overall: Highly recommended.
Once upon a time..................2007-08-14
Once Upon A Thyme, children, there was a movie called "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." It was a movie based on a 50 year-old book of the same name, which had 2 sequels. Those 2 books were also made into movies, and those 3 movies were very very very good, and all was right with the world.
THEN ... The Powers That Bee decided that because those 3 movies were so very good (and so very profitable) then ALL successful movies must now come in threes: and lo and behold we had 3 XMens, 3 Spidermans, 3 Austin Powers, 3 Pirates, and of course 3 Oceans. Never mind the fact that the "Rings" movies came in a trilogy because the original novels came that way. None of these sequels had any reason for being, other than the first movie made a lot of money. And in every single case, the third movie was the worst of the bunch, the inspiration and steam that made the first movie a success long, long gone.
This is an olde, olde story children. Witness 4 Jaws, 3 Rambos, 6 Rockys, 742 Bonds, 3 (and counting) Indiana Jones, ad infinitum. We can even go back 70 years to 6 Thin Mans, the last 3 of which weren't so great. But no matter. Don't expect H'wood to learn from the dearth of joy in their sequels, because we keep lapping them up.
Nevertheless, there is always the FIRST of all of these movies to return to, and that is what we must do when all is said and spent. Go back to the original (well, the remake of the original, anyway) and remember a time not so long ago when charisma had a name, and its name was "Ocean's Eleven." This is the only movie they needed to make.
A Throwback Worth Keeping.......2007-08-08
OCEAN'S ELEVEN is one movie among many that is symptomatic of a Hollywood problem: that is, a lack of new ideas. This is a remake, somewhat lost perhaps, among all the other remakes, sequels, and so on, that have marred the creative braintrust of Tinseltown. But OCEAN'S ELEVEN is fun, fun, fun--and Hollywood is short on that, too, these days.
There's another thing that makes this movie both good and rare: an ensemble cast. Really, friends and neighbors, how often do you get this caliber of a cast in a modern movie: Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Carl Reiner, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Andy Garcia, and yes, Bernie Mac? Good gravey, I haven't seen the likes since THE LONGEST DAY. And they all play their parts unselfishly (except, perhaps, for Clooney--but he's the star).
Oh, yeah. It's all about a heist, a team of eleven strangely likeable criminals who seek to knock off Vegas's three biggest casinos. Watching them work is a blast!

I tried to watch this movie but after the first seconds of hearing Clooney's voice I got sleepy. My eyes blurred at the screen and everything got dark siewpfieys...oops sorry I am having a flashback to the moment and forgot how to type. I didn't see this movie and don't know if I ever will. So don't bother with my opinion. It is just one out of many.
Ocean's Eleven.......2007-07-20
Almost as funny as the original (starring the" Rat Pack") Enjoyed Don Cheadle (so out of character) and of course
seeing Elliot Gould and Carl Reiner again was a hoot.

Julia Ormond faced one of the great challenges of her career when she tried to re-create Audrey Hepburn's title role in the 1995 remake of 1954's Sabrina. Happily, Ormond performed admirably, and while she may not have the same gamine charm of Hepburn, she makes the role her own. In fact, her transformation from mousy girl to sophisticated young woman is actually more dramatic in this updated version. The basic plot is the same--chauffeur's daughter falls in love with the son of the rich household, only to be wooed away by the older brother for business purposes--but it has been entertainingly modernized: The head of the Larrabee household is the strong matriarch (Nancy Marchand); Sabrina goes to Paris to work with a photographer instead of going to cooking school (although that means the wonderful "new egg" scene of the original had to be ditched); David's (Greg Kinnear) character has been toned down and made more sympathetic; and Humphrey Bogart's revolutionary plastic has become the flattest TV screen ever made. Lauren Holly does a fine job playing Elizabeth Tyson, David's fiancée. If you watch this for its own worth--instead of comparing it to the original--this will prove to be a terrific lighthearted romantic comedy. --Jenny Brown
Customer Reviews:
Hate me, but this is better than the Hepburn version.......2007-08-22
Most crtics would disagree with me, but I liked this movie far better than the Bogart/Hepburn version. I love Harrison Ford--he's very sexy and I never thought Bogie was even attractive, much less sexy and I'm 58 years old. Julia Ormond is also far prettier than Audrey Hepburn. I liked Hepburn, she was just way too fragile looking. It was always hard for me to see her as an adult. In this remake, Linus'(Harrison Ford) transformation from total workaholic to a man who understood the need to LIVE was gradual and believable. I saw little, if any, difference in the character as played by Bogart. And Julia Ormond's Sabrina went convincingly from awkward teen with a major crush on the younger brother (SPOILER ALERT) to sophisticated adult who discovers real love with the older brother, Linus. I absolutely loved the ending. Highly recommended.
Disappointed.......2007-08-11
The DVD is faulty! It's not able to load or play - an error happens when loading it! I'd like to return it please.
The 1st movie's a classic, but the second speaks to me more.......2007-07-29
Now I admit, I am very biased with this movie because my mother named me after the 1st film, so for me to be a fan of this movie is something of a no-brainer. I own both versions, and I really think each movie should be judged by its own merits. However, if I have to choose which I favor, it would have to be the 1995 re-make because I feel that it speaks more to my generation that the earlier version.
Of course, Humphrey Bogart is the strong, silent type, and Audrey Hepburn is the epitome of elegance, and they played their roles in a way that was accurate and appropriate for 1954, but let's face it, Audrey's sort of elegance for many today is somewhat unattainable. I liked the way Julia Ormond interpreted Sabrina because while she is played as savvy, she is still somewhat vulnerable, and not afraid to be so. I also liked the way she brings out the vulnerability and tenderness in Linus "the world's only living heart donor" as played by Harrison Ford.
A few other reasons why I appreciate the remake?
The various characters were better developed in the 2d movie. In the original it was as though they were blending in with the furniture. Linus's admin just cracked me up with her dry humor. The mother was pretty funny at points, too. I also liked the fact that Elizabeth Tyson is played up more intelligently in the re-make than in the original...and that despite the temptation in the end, David honors his commitment to Elizabeth in the end. About the only "airhead" was the Angie Dickenson character, but even that role was humorous. I cracked up watching her be all flirty with Linus at the dinner.
Recently, I had a chance to read the entire script from the original 1953 Samuel Taylor play entitled Sabrina Fair: A Woman Of The World. I discovered that the 1995 movie is actually closer to the script of the play than the 1954 movie. In the original movie, there's no mention of the fact that Fairchild, the chauffer having become a millionaire over the years by listening into Larabee Sr.'s transactions, but the play and the remake do mention it. I feel that part is essential to the story as part of the issue in both movies was class distinction...albeit moreso in the former than in the latter.
My only complaint? I used to have this movie in VHS, and that version included a video of Sting singing the song "Moonlight." I was disappointed that the DVD did not include this beautiful song.
Sabrina - Harrison Ford.......2007-06-27
A solidly enjoyable mushy romance. Nice update in that the Sabrina charactor was a much more substantial human being.
Good...........2007-06-16
...but not as good as the original. I think everyone did a great job in it and you will enjoy it.

Pay It Forward is a multi-level marketing scheme of the heart. Beginning as a seventh-grade class assignment to put into action an idea that could change the world, young Trevor McKinney (Haley Joel Osment) comes up with a plan to do good deeds for three people who then by way of payment each must do good turns for three other people. These nine people also must pay it forward and so on, ad infinitum. If successful, the resulting network of do-gooders ought to comprise the entire world. Trevor's attempts to get the ball rolling include befriending a junkie (James Caviezel) and trying to set up his recovering-alcoholic mother (Helen Hunt) with his burn-victim teacher (Kevin Spacey), who posed the assignment.
While this could have turned into unmitigated schmaltz, the acting elevates this film to mitigated schmaltz. By turns powerful and measured, the performances of Spacey, Hunt, and Osment can't make up for the many missteps in a screenplay that sanitizes the look of the lower-middle class and expects us to believe that homeless alcoholics and junkies speak in the elevated manner of grad students. (Can that really be Angie Dickinson as Hunt's dispossessed mother? Yes, it is!) The germ of the story is a good one, though, and one may wonder how it would have been handled by the likes of Frank Capra, who could balance sentiment with humor. But clearly Capra would never have let the ending of his version to take the nosedive into cliché and pathos that director Mimi Leder has allowed in this film. More than a few viewers will also recognize that Leder has blatantly borrowed her final image from Field of Dreams, where its intended effect was more keenly and honestly felt. --Jim Gay
Customer Reviews:
Great Movie.......2007-08-28
This movie is sad yet motivational to be a better person. The quality of the DVD is normal.
Let's try this..........2007-07-19
The filn, while a bit trite, has an excellent premisis that ALL of us should try. Many of us today have very selfesh and greedy personalities. The main character in this film shows a differeng "way."
Thumbs up for a great message!.......2007-07-16
Since other reviewers have done a good job summarizing the story of this film, I want to add the following:
This has got to be one of the sweetest stories I've ever seen told on film. The real driving force behind this story is young actor Haley Joel Osment. While his performance in "The Sixth Sense" was intense, his intensity and pathos delivery is far from lacking in this story as well. The story is about a young boy who comes up with a way to help the world remember the joy that comes in giving to others, especially total strangers. The interaction between Kevin Spacey's character and that of Helen Hunt is a reminder that some of us wear our scares on the outside, while others wear them on the inside. Good character development in this film: Just great for the whole family to watch. The only violent scene is at the end when young Trevor, played by Haley Osment, is stabbed by another school kid and dies a martre for a great cause of love and giving. This is a film well worth watching that talks about the brokeness of the human condition and how all of us can make a difference in this broken world of ours. Better buy a box of tissues for this one if you are prone to cry, because this one will make the tears fall from your eyes; partly out of joy and partly out of saddness as you embrace this well made production.
The only real disappointment was the commentary section on the DVD done by the Director Mimi Leder. The director could have offered far more information, but mostly stayed silent through most of the film while offering some insight into the making of the film. Otherwise it still gets a 5 star rating from me for story content, acting and character development. The cinematography and night lighting work is also very good in this production.
Good Message, Bad Language.......2007-07-08
I had heard that this was a good movie, but was very disappointed by the foul language spattered all through it. There was a very good message hidden under all the vulgarity, though, I hope someone re-makes this movie in a g-rated format so that others can learn the message of sacrificially helping others in their time of need.
Perfect.......2007-05-28
It was shipped in a timely manner & was in excellent shape.
Thanks

Straight From the Heart.......2007-09-11
This is a great love story. It's clean and decent, and worth having in our movie library. It's another one that I would highly recommend for anyone to own.
The book on which this movie was based came before "The Horse Whisperer".......2007-08-27
This is for those who think that this movie is a slightly-changed version of "The Horse Whisperer": Pamela Wallace published her book "Straight from the Heart," on which this movie was based, in 1996.
Nicholas Evans published "The Horse Whisperer," on which that movie was based, in 1998.
Hit the spot!.......2007-08-07
This was a very nice story. OK, popcorn for the brain, but light, filling, and hits the right spot. There is a nice chemistry between the two leads and a believable story. After renting, I liked it enough to buy it for my DVD collection.
An Overall Good Movie.......2007-07-31
Somehow I never got to see the whole story on the Hallmark channel, so I wanted my own copy as I really liked the story, the actors, and the scenery. I was a bit taken aback by the dialogue between the two main characters when they first met, but the writers had their own ideas, I guess. I'd watch it with my grandchildren.
'The Horse Whisperer' Lite.......2007-07-23
I was looking forward to this film. Indeed, I made sure it was at the top of my `Netflix' queue. Unfortunately, it was the one that got away. Soon there was a very long wait. People are no doubt drawn to this film because they are longing for simple, good entertainment. Perhaps they first saw it on `The Hallmark Channel' and wanted to see it again. It's not all that great of a film, but it is worthwhile anyway. That needs an explanation, so bear with me. It certainly is easy to watch. I think great film or not, it goes down easily and becomes a casual pleasure. The subject matter is interesting even if the whole affair becomes no better than a lite (or, "light") version of 'The Horse Whisperer'.
The story is the basis for a romantic culture clash. Jordan Donovan (Teri Polo) is a photographer from New York City. She's tired of the typical treadmill of romance. In both aspects of her life she is trying to break through. Her arty exhibits of (literally) garbage fail to spark interest for a sponsor of photography exhibits. Meanwhile, her love interest, Edward, has been dating her for years, but refuses to make a commitment. Her roommate, Carla, (Christine Tucci) is presented like a half-funny, but easily as likable Rhoda. She plays matchmaker by signing her up for `Cowboy Connections,' a magazine with a "Personals" column designed to hook up couples out West.
All too neatly, Carla has taken the liberty of not only putting her friend's name in the magazine, but writing her background and answering any prospects that come to her. On Jordan's birthday, she not only has a man, but a plane ticket for her to join him at his ranch in Wyoming. Cynically, she, nevertheless, does what most people would do at the prospect of adventure: She accepts both as a present.
Even more neatly, Tyler Ross (Andrew McCarthy) has a doting sister named Laurie (Patricia Kalember) who answers his personal ads for him. Jaundiced about dating again, he doesn't think much when she calls to tell him a woman from NYC is coming to his ranch. Something must stir inside him, for we discover earlier it was he who provided the plane ticket.
Her arrival is not a friendly one. Quickly, the resentment pours through: At breakfast he tartly announces that they don't serve "espresso" at the morning table. Later, when she's falls off a horse, he nastily chides, "I don't want some big city lawyer trying to sue me." She understandably doesn't allow herself to be a walking mat. She has some counter resentments to offer: going toe-to-toe she has plenty to say about cholesterol soaked breakfasts and his backward behavior. Yet, she has a background that he doesn't even consider, and as the movie unfolds, she has several opportunities to prove herself more than a typical city slicker.
Across the way former friend, Mr. Jameson, is brazen about trespassing on Tyler's land to capture wild mustangs for his own use. United Tyler and Jordan try to oppose his lawless horse trade while working out some terms of bitterness found in everyone's past.
Some of the appeal of the movie is the scenery. Mustangs rush past with autumnal mountain horizons while the pair take on the work of the land. The old-fashioned Western score by Mader is superb for the laid back adventure, and the tenderness of key scenes works its way incrementally as it goes along.
Pleasant, enjoyable, and easy-going like a trek to Wyoming itself, `Straight from the Heart' may not have the best performances, nor the most original dialogue, but it is still a pleasurable film trek anyway. While I thought throughout the "torn between two lovers" scenario Jordan deserved better choices, who's to judge about taste if a relationship has a chance to work? After all, sometimes even a two-star film is all we really need.

An elite U.S. counter-terrorism squad loses a member while decimating half of Paris in the reckless pursuit of Middle Eastern maniacs; a Broadway actor with a traumatic childhood secret is naturally hired to replace him. Oh--and they're all marionettes. South Park maestros Trey Parker and Matt Stone (along with co-writer Pam Brady) came up with this shameless satire of pea-brained Hollywood action flicks and even smaller-minded global politics, so don't expect subtlety or even a hint of good taste. Team America is soon on the trail of North Korea's evil Kim Jong Il, who treats us to a tender song about his loneliness before ensnaring Alec Baldwin and the rest of the oblivious Film Actors Guild (F.A.G. for short) in a plot to blow up every major city on the planet. Just as the mindless squad cheerfully demolishes everything in sight, so do director Parker and company. Throwing punches Left, Right, and in-between, the movie's politics leave no turn un-stoned; there's even time to bludgeon the musical Rent. It's offensive, irresponsible comic anarchy seemingly made by sniggering little boys. Painfully funny sniggering little boys.--Steve Wiecking
Description
In TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE, a group of marionette puppets form Team America, an international police force dedicated to maintaining global stability. Discovering that a power hungry dictator, Kim Jong II, plans to destroy the world and is brokering weapons of mass destruction to terrorists, the team enlists the undercover help of Broadway star Gary Johnston and embarks on a harrowing mission to save the world. Opposed to this, is the Film Actors' Guild, or F.A.G., whose members include puppets representing actors Alec Baldwin, Tim Robbins, Matt Damon, Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. In spite of the lack of support they receive, the team sticks to their plan of saving the world and putting an end to terrorism.

F*** Yeah!.......2007-08-28
Shows that at least some Merkins recognize the inanity of their country's general world-view. Nothing is immune from the acerbic wit of the creators of this. No doubt the irony will fall flat in the land in which it was created but, for the rest of the world: F*** Yeah!
Yikes!.......2007-08-17
This is a really bad movie. I'm a fan of the South Park film and was expecting the same sort of thing with Team America: the witty satire, the sharp comedy, the clever songs. Instead, Team America turned out to be an unfunny bore.
While watching this movie, I spent a good deal of time trying to figure out where exactly the comedy lies. What was I supposed to be laughing at? The dialogue isn't clever, but rather predictable and clichéd. The characters are either stereotypes or archetypes drawn so broadly as to not even resemble anyone remotely life-like.
Nothing in the film was shocking or surprising. Even the sudden bursts of profanity had a ho-hum quality after watching South Park. The much talked about marionette sex scene was simply stupid and I can't believe it got so much press.
I was really surprised at how little I liked this film. It was truly awful. Thank god it was a rental and I didn't actually spend money buying it.
Simply hilarious.......2007-08-08
I 'd hoped that the new film by the guys from South Park would be as good as "South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut", and my expectations were fulfilled.
This movie is just hilarious from start to finish. And also it is the most sophisticated puppet show ever. The sets are exceptional as is the attention to detail.
Puppets cursing, having sex, fighting ala Matrix, singing about how bad was the movie Pearl Harbor and Ben Affleck's acting. There are many funny moments in the film. (poor Mat Damon...). The Broadway musical "LEASE" and the song's lyrics... too funny. And Montage!
One of the funniest movies together with South Park, ever. WATCH IT NOW.
I can't think about it without cracking up!!!.......2007-07-13
The concept is so bizarre, the humor is so twisted, the puppetry is so awesome, the sets are so mindblowing, this movie is so creative and SO WEIRD, ******THIS IS ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!****** Thinking about this movie at all hits me so deeply, I bubble up with laughter.
I have watched this movie now about 4 times in 2 weeks, and I'm about to watch part of it again. See ya!
I laughed so hard I was exhausted...THIS IS NOT FOR CHILDREN!!!!!.......2007-06-29
Offensive and funny in the way that puppets expressing emotions, engaging in violence, having sex without sanction of sacraments and Church, and hurling obscenities can only be. I could not stop laughing the entire time.
I'm somewhere to the right of Vlad the Impaler, so the old right-bashing left-bashing arguments so beloved of South Park Republicans (mostly libertarians) don't carry much truck with me. Rightist hypocrisy and false braggadocio are on full display here, along with over-the-top chuckle-headed nationalism an inch deep and an ocean wide filled with the tears of sentiment and absent boarders of reason. On the flip side, self-righteous Hollywood poltroons are given their full display, and no gasbag disappoints. What is more remarkable is how little the caricature of the puppets differs from the actual spew of their objects. Perhaps that is funniest of all.
This film makes full use of the liberty of comedy, employing and invoking the ancient rights of jesters everywhere to have no sacred cows. If you think of the film seriously, there is absolutely no way you can not be offended. If you enter into the Rabelaisian world of suspension of disbelief and watch the puppets become the morality play within the interior of the melodrama becomes evident. The admonition "That which stimulates our senses but at the same time does not elevate our morals is pernicious" is defeated by the exquisite combination of Rabelais, Satire, Machiavelli, and explosive plasticine. We are better for the distractions of the jesters: let them play on.

A great-looking, well-acted Western in the old-school tradition, Seraphim Falls is definitely worth a look for fans of the genre. There's nothing really new here (which explains why it played only briefly in theaters), and more than a few critics noted its obvious similarities to Clint Eastwood's classic The Outlaw Josey Wales. Still, you have to admire director and cowriter David Von Ancken (a 10-year TV veteran making his feature debut) for delivering an engrossing post-Civil War revenge story (cowritten with Abby Everett Jacques) that isn't hobbled by its overly familiar plotting. Blessed by the exquisite cinematography of John Toll (whose credits include The Thin Red Line, Almost Famous and The Last Samurai) and bolstered by a lush but unobtrusive score by Harry Gregson-Williams, this prestigious production begins very well indeed, with a wintry manhunt in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada, circa 1868. Former Union captain Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) is being tracked by a seemingly brutal pursuer named Carver (Liam Neeson) whose four-man posse (including veteran character actors Ed Lauter and Michael Wincott) is soon reduced to two.
As the manhunt continues, Brosnan and Neeson make the most of minimal dialogue, and flashbacks give us hints about the tragic event that set this plot in motion. It's a simple, elemental tale of justice in the wilderness, with occasional quirks like a snake-oil vendor (Anjelica Huston) who appears literally out of nowhere, and a top-hatted Indian (Wes Studi) who gives the film a slight, mystical air of mystery. And while a more daring director might have opted for a more powerful visual style, there's something to be said for Von Ancken's straightforward approach, perfectly matched by Toll's breathtaking landscapes, shot on location in Oregon and New Mexico and ranging from raging rivers to sun-baked desert flats. None of this makes Seraphim Falls a particularly exceptional movie, but with a fine cast that also includes such familiar faces as Angie Harmon, Tom Noonan, Xander Berkeley, and Kevin J. O'Connor, there's ample reward in a film that doesn't pretend to be anything more than a respectable entry in its genre. --Jeff Shannon
Product Description
Liam Neeson (Batman Begins, Star Wars: Episode 1 "The Phantom Menace" ) and Pierce Brosnan (Bond movies, The Thomas Crown Affair) star in this epic chase and primal battle set in the breathtaking landscape of the West. The civil war has ended but Colonel Morsman Carver (Neeson) is on one final mission: to kill Gideon (Brosnan) no matter what it takes. Launched by a gunshot and propelled by rage, the relentless pursuit takes them both far from the comforts and codes of civilization, into the bloodiest recesses of their own souls. Also starring Academy Award® winner Anjelica Huston and Angie Harmon. It's been five years since the end of the American Civil War. Somewhere deep within the snowy mountains of the American West a lone figure - Gideon (Brosnan) sits in front of a fire, lost in thought. Abruptly, he is pulled out of his reverie by the echo of a Henry rifle and a bullet puffing into the snow inches from his head. Instantly Gideon calculates his one chance of survival. To leave everything he owns and run for the cover. And so begins the thrilling account of Colonel Morsman Carver's (Neeson) terrible revenge - to hunt down and kill Gideon, no matter what it takes. There will be many men dead before these two meet face to face, and only then will Carver fully comprehend the full cost of his undertaking. Launched by a gunshot and propelled by rage, the relentless pursuit will take them both far from the comforts and codes of civilization and into the unforgiving wilderness.
Customer Reviews:
Western suspense!.......2007-09-13
This was a very different kind of western. It starts out with immediate violence but without an explanation. It actually takes a long time for you to begin to understand why one man is relentlessly tracking another. There is no clear good guy/bad guy - but if you hang in there, it becomes very rewarding. Over all, I enjoyed this film.
Starts out strong and then goes south.......2007-08-27
Seraphim Falls is a movie about revenge. Although the movie starts out strong it goes south in the later parts when we lose the realistic, earth-bound and basic nature of the story to spin into an ending that strikes as being very out of line with the rest of the tale. That isn't saying what was done with the ending is bad, it isn't, it just doesn't belong in a movie where everything has been so basic and shallow up until the end and then the sudden change comes on too heavy.
To try and sum it up without giving away anything (don't worry, this movie doesn't hold any surprises though) you have Brosnan as "Gideon" an ex-union officer fleeing from something he took part in that he can't let go of. Pursuing Brosnan is Neeson as "Carver" a confederate officer who hates Brosnan with a passion and is leading a posse to kill him, obviously over the aforementioned event that plagues Brosnan.
The movie opens well and cranks up the action and suspense but slows back down and never regains that momentum again. As the story unfolds we find that both Brosnan and Neeson are at their core unlikeable fellows (despite the story trying to tell us that Neeson was a lovable family-man once we find it hard to believe that a man that treats the people around him this way now could have once cared about anyone). The movie is very predictable, as it should be, cat and mouse stuff, though Brosnan is extremely capable of defending himself though he rarely chooses to stand and fight. Given their nature, the limited script and the declining action the movie does start to drag on and when the ending arrives it has an overdue feeling to it. Ultimately the two are given the option to sacrifice everything for a last shot at revenge and the remainder of the movie is open to interpretation but I found it to be a bit unsatisfying.
A Disappointment With No Payoff at the End.......2007-08-23
I like Pierce Brosnan and I like Liam Neeson and I like westerns -- but I don't like this film. True, it starts out gangbusters, and the gradual telling of the backstory works well. However, "Seraphim Falls" goes on about 15 minutes too long, the timeline stretches credulity (for a guy who's walking, Pierce covers a LOT of ground), the Anjelica Huston character appears out of nowhere and her scenes have all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. On top of that, the ending feels like the producers and director were in a hurry to wrap it up so they wouldn't go over budget. The film doesn't end; it just stops. There's no payoff at the finish. I wanted to like "Seraphim Falls," but it defeated me.
The Makings of a Terrific Film ..........2007-08-21
As this film began, my interest was captured, it kept me glued to my seat, and I never moved for a good hour. The imagery is superb. The actors, spledidly cast. For the genre, it fullfilled all the senses. But just as you're riding along with the main character (Brosnan), you're feeling for him, you're rooting for him, and you're hoping he gets the best of his fierce enemy (Neeson), but you find out that maybe he's getting exactly what he deserves. He did a very, bad, ugly thing, and now you're not sure who to root for. This could have been a great movie, except for that one, final flaw toward the climax. Regardless, you will be entertained. It's packed full of raw, rugged action that will soothe and delight.
Good Cowboy Flick.......2007-08-04
This was a very well done story an element of "Josey Wales" with, near the end, a bit of the surreal elements of "Dead Man". Pierce Brosnan finally got a role he could really sink his teeth into, though not one of my favourite actors, in films of real drama and scope (more so than the Bond films) is where his true talent and ability shines, he was fantastic. My favourite actors in the film are Wes Studi and Michael Wincott which was what initially drew my interest in it and I do wish Wes Studi had gotten a more significant part. Wes like Michael Wincott are highly underrated actors which is a shame seeing how extroardinarily talented they are.
This film presented a great story of revenge and redemption and needs to be seen a couple of times to be fully appreciated. The action was thrilling, the scenery was beautiful and the acting first rate. Not alot of films of this quality of story telling are out these days.

Description
On December 31, 1931, lone trapper Albert Johnson (Charles Bronson) shot and killed a man in self-defense at his remote Yukon cabin. A few days later, hard-living lawman Sgt. Edgar Millen (Lee Marvin) reluctantly brought a heavily armed posse to arrest Johnson for murder. In the brutal siege that followed, Johnson would kill four more men before escaping into the frozen mountains. As a nation watched, Millen was forced to pursue Johnson by foot, dogsled and plane in a desperate chase that would take both men from the brink of survival to the very edge of vengeance.
Fifteen years after THE DIRTY DOZEN, Bronson and Marvin re-teamed for this explosive action hit directed by Peter Hunt (ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, ASSASSINATION). Andrew Stevens, Carl Weathers and Angie Dickinson co-star in this real-life story of the fugitive called 'The Mad Trapper' and the manhunt that shocked the world. Based On The Incredible True Story Of'The Deadliest Manhunt In History'
Customer Reviews:
A good Bronson film besides Death Wish 1.......2007-08-28
I really liked this movie. The story was very good and well acted and the action was good. Normally I do not watch Bronson movies but I saw this one as a kid and it allways stuck with me.
Bronson vs Marvin!.......2007-08-19
I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. It still holds up well though there are some hokey parts with some goofy characters that could have been left out. But Bronson is just... BRONSON. And Lee Marvin as the mounty that is assigned to bring him in is just great (as usual). This is a classic story and a classic adventure movie. Both leads are grizzled, tough as shoe leather raw boned men from a different era.
This is like Godzilla vs King Kong to me except these two guys would make that big dumb ape and stinky lizard cry home to their mamas.
Plenty Of Action Packed Adventure.......2007-06-26
Death Hunt starring Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson is certainly one film that will never end up on the Lifetime channel. Director Peter R. Hunt and Scriptwriters Michael Grais and Mark Victor do a bang up job moving the standard western film formula to 1930's Canada. The Yukon backdrop is as much a part of this film as Monument Valley is to a John Ford Western. This film carries that uneasy feeling of trouble right from the get go. Granted it is based on a real incident, but doesn't follow the real historical line, and so what. Death Hunt is meant to be pure men's entertainment. Lee Marvin as Sgt. Millen of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who has been in the backwater for too long, knows that he represents law an civilization to a group of folks who could care less. He is a pragmatist who knows just how much to let the locals get away with, as long as it keeps the lid on. Marvin is exquisite as the grizzled drunken professional, who in his own way, is running from civilization as much as any of the ignorant locals. I forsee a retrospective of the work of Charles Bronson definitely including the film Death Hunt. Bronson plays Albert Johnson who shows up in town, out of nowhere. A man tired of life, it seems, who just wants to be left alone. But, he is not a man, like most of the people in that town, who will ignore suffering, and that even applies to animals. This is where the trouble begins. The film contains a great supporting cast, Ed Lauter, as Hazel, the ignorant dogfighting trapper who thinks that he is the defacto king of this barbaric place. Andrew Stevens as the young, piss and vinegar, Mountie assigned to Millen's outpost is great. The film also boasts Carl Weathers as an ex-patiriot American black, who found a life in this part of Canada that was denied to him in the U.S. The film is a great chase. You find yourself routing for hunter and hunted alike. With Death Hunt you get great direction, great dialogue, great scenic locations, and wonderful acting. This all adds up to A plus entertainment. A great film. Buy the DVD!
catch me if you can and live to tell about it.......2007-03-14
There are two movies that come to mind, when I speak of this one,"Lonely are the Brave" and "Valdez is Coming". The same theme in all three of these excellent films, "the Law Hunts The Fugitive" The fugitive portrays the sympathytic hero in all three films. In all three, the persuer takes a liking to the one he hunts. They come to respect his courage and fortitude. This movie is full of twists, turns, thrills and spills, excitement, suspense, not to mention beautiful mountain scenery. Last but definetly not least, Lee Marvin and Charles Bronon, they alone are worth the price of admission. "Anonymously" Louie G.
Marvin and Bronson at their best.......2007-03-02
This film is a masterpiece for action and adventure.Great scenery and an ending where all the good guys win,BRILLIANT.

A GOOD MOVIE.......2007-09-10
It is interesting to see what life was like in the 70's before aids, and all the various types of drugs we have today. We've come a long way, but, things are still pathetic
<
Great acting debut by Al Pacino, but..........2007-07-25
Plot of this movie is kind of a downer, and it's outdated too. If you like Al Pacino, I suppose it is a must see, but otherwise, I would not bother.
The beginning of a beautiful friendship.......2007-07-25
between Al and film and his fans. His acting ability is never in question from the beginning. Never mind that the material was threadbare, all that mattered was Al was a jewel. Very few first time performances can predict an actors future, but I saw this movie when it came out and I knew he was going to be a star. Like Leonardo DiCaprio performance in Gilbert Grape, you just know.
Panic in Needle Park.......2007-07-24
This movie is awesome for being an older movie, i dont really like older movies, but my husband made me watch it and i really enjoyed it.
A Pacino breakthrough film.......2007-07-22
This is one of the first for him and I feel shows his strengths as a manic highstrung personality. It also shows his sensitive side and I think this was a true breakthrough performance.

When it comes down to naming the best Western of all time, the list usually narrows to three completely different pictures: John Ford's The Searchers, Howard Hawks's Red River, and Hawks's Rio Bravo. About the only thing they all have in common is that they all star John Wayne. But while The Searchers is an epic quest for revenge and Red River is a sweeping cattle-drive drama ("Take 'em to Missouri! Yeeee-hah!"), Rio Bravo is on a much more modest scale. Basically, it comes down to Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne), his sobering-up alcoholic friend Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and deputy-sidekick Stumpy (Walter Brennan), sittin' around in the town jail, drinkin' black cofee, shootin' the breeze, and occasionally, singin' a song. Hawks--who, like his pal Ernest Hemingway, lived by the code of "grace under pressure"--said he made Rio Bravo as a rebuke to High Noon, in which sheriff Gary Cooper begged for townspeople to help him. So, Hawks made Wayne's Sheriff Chance a consummate professional--he may be getting old and fat, but he knows how to do his job, and he doesn't want amateurs getting mixed up in his business; they could get hurt. This most entertaining of movies also achieved some notoriety in the '90s when Quentin Tarantino (director of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Jackie Brown) revealed that he uses it as a litmus test for prospective girlfriends. Oh, and if the configuration of characters sounds familiar, it should: Hawks remade Rio Bravo two more times--as El Dorado in 1967, with Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Caan; and as Rio Lobo in 1970, with Wayne, Jack Elam, and Christopher Mitchum. --Jim Emerson

Rio Bravo 1958 (Two-Disc Special Edition).......2007-08-25
Slam-bang , exiciting, funny . One of the all-time great Westerns . On one side is an army of gunmen dead-set on springing a mordeous sidekick from jail . On the other is the Sheriff John T. Change and his deputies: one a drunk , the other a cripple . Place your bets . John Wayne (Chance) 1907-1979 in RIO BRAVO , a lean Western classic packing solid heroism and a strong emotional core . He's joined by Dean Martin (1917-1995) as it the deputy coming off a two-year drunk , Walter Brennan (1894-1974) as the old coot whose spirit outmatches his hobbled stride. Ricky Nelson (1940-1985) as a youth out of place himself and Angie Dickinson (1931 - ) as a scarlet woman with one eye on Chance . Directed Howard Hawks (1896-1977) lifted the Western to new Hights with RED RIVER (1948). Capturing the Legendary West with a stellar cast in peak form , he does it again here . High Quality Transfer .
GREAT MOVIE.......2007-08-12
A famous western that fully deserves it's status as one of the genre's greatest, 'Rio Bravo' is a laconic classic. The plot is simple, the pace is relaxed but there's real movie magic at work here, with a superb cast under Howard Hawks' assured direction. Front and centre is the effortless charisma of John Wayne, he's commanding, funny and even vunerable as the iconic Sheriff John T. Chance. Dean Martin is terrific as Dude, the drunken deputy trying to sober up, he's so underrated as an actor and performs marvellously here. And who can forget Walter Brennan as Stumpy? Add music sensation of the day Ricky Nelson, then watch these men sit round the jail bonding, arguing and even singing a song. The chemistry is amazing, full of humour and wonderful warmth. And Angie Dickinson is absolutely luscious as the Duke's fiesty love interest. So here's a great ol' fashioned classic that has it all. A must see for any movie buff.
Rio Dorado, or I mean Bravo!.......2007-07-26
This is classic John Wayne and Howard Hawks. If you love John Wayne movies you'll love this one. Now personally I enjoyed El Dorado better than this one and sure they are basically the same movie, but they are different enough that you can watch them both and enjoy them for different reasons.
In Rio Bravo, unlike El dorado, Wayne is the sheriff and he is definitely the law. This is a powerful man that knows his job. Dean Martin is his drunken deputy, Dude, who fell apart over a woman we never meet. Part of the fun and drama of this movie is Martin becoming the man he used to be while he and Wayne keep guard over the murderous Joe Burdette played by a smug Claude Akins, while dodging bullets and threats from Nathan Burdette (Joe's wiser brother) played by John Russell.
Along for laughs (and there's plenty) are Walter Brennan playing the old crippled jail hand Stumpy and Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez as the hotel owner. Of course there's the love interest for Wayne as well, and although done ok, it really isn't the reason to keep watching this movie over and over again.
Rio Bravo isn't Wayne's best movie, but it is one of my favorites and one I can continue to watch year after year.
Still cut by Warner ?.......2007-07-16
I have european and american prior releases. Cut. First the full image that I have on VHS from TV, is cut on dvds by two bars top and bottom to get a 1:85 image ratio, as Warner says "as shown first in theaters". But since, Warner, Tv offered the full image version for all those who missed the initial release !, and you seem to ignore that remote control allows dvd player or large screen tv to enlarge the image for those who chose it. Still planning to gain money one day releasing the "full image" version, uh ? (as for the Hammer films)
Second, I saw the movie in the 50s in Paris, and at origin, and still in mid-70s in Paris in the original subtitled version in theaters (full screen), because Walter Brennan asks him to keep his promise, Dean Martin washes himself in a bucket in the prison with the others around. It is WHY he changes his dirty clothes for clean ones, BEFORE he announces going to the hotel for a bath (to finish details of course).
