My son watches it over and over. It arrived in great condition and I will be ordering again. : )

5 out of 5 stars Grandson entertainer ..........2005-10-14

My grandosn loves Scooby-Doo, and this disk is no exception. In fact, he took it home with him. It has the same high quality of all Scooby cartoons, and the monsters are just scarey enough to be fun and not really scare the child. We buy all the Scooby we can for the sense of adventure and because the monsters are always proved to be nothing to be afraid of.

4 out of 5 stars My kids love it!.......2005-09-29

My kids love the movie and watch it all the time. I even bought one as a gift. I thought it was great that they had the old rock group Kiss in it. What a flashback!

This DVD is full of surprises some good, one not. I liked all the episodes especially the first one with a cameo by KISS at a halloween party. The only part I didnt like was the laugh track. Why on earth would you have a laugh track on a Scooby Doo cartoon? Its insulting. But overall a great DVD

4 out of 5 stars A Package Deal.......2006-07-02

The Matinee Idol is one of those silent film treasures because it was considered lost for such a long time. When it was discovered, it was not complete and had been altered not only for a different language but for time it seems. The restoration on this disk looks beautiful. One would never know by looking at it that it was such a find; there is practically no deterioration and the picture is gorgeous. The only giveaway are the skips in the film which account for five minutes of lost footage. You don't need it to enjoy the film though.

The Matinee Idol is about a Broadway blackface star (Johnnie Walker). He goes to a small town with some big shot friends who decide to waste time by seeing a show. The blackface star winds up in the show and hams it up for his friends in the audience. The show is a trite melodrama taken very seriously by the small town folks in it, especially the female lead (Bessie Love). When she fires the Broadway actor, he retaliates by having his friends take the show to New York so he can make fun of them. As the story often goes, the two begin to fall for each other, but he still goes through with his plan. The Broadway show is bittersweet; it is both funny and sad as the crowd laughs like hyenas but the players realize the extent of their talents.

Also included on this disk is a wonderful documentary about Frank Capra, the director of the film. It covers the many famous Capra films as well as some that are lesser known, his relationships with stars like Harry Langdon and Barbara Stanwyck, and his life outside of Hollywood. There are interviews with his sons and other directors like Martin Scorcese and actors like Peter Falk and Fay Wray. The opening is beautiful and makes one feel that the film is important. It ends by giving the viewer a new perspective on Capra's messages and moods in his work to help one appreciate it more.

5 out of 5 stars Frank Capra's American Dream.......2005-08-28

Frank Capra's American Dream is a must for all those who have enjoyed Capra's contribution to cinematic art - and still do. The documentary gives a full overview of Capra's life and detailed discussions of all of his major films, illustrated with carefully selected excerpts from them. The discussions are balanced, and deal with the strengths and weaknesses of individual films. I was struck by the darker themes implicit in Capra's mature work. Interviews with his children and with various artists involved in his projects provide fascinating insights into the histories of Capra's films. I was particularly interested in the interviews with Jane Wyatt (Sondra in "Lost Horizon," my favourite Capra film), and Fay Wray (of "King Kong" fame), who was the wife of Robert Riskin, Capra's main scriptwriter for many years. Capra's problems with the evolving Hollywood "star system" in the later part of his career make sad viewing. The reproduction quality of the documentary is excellent. Ron Howard did a sterling job as the host of the documentary. Highly recommended. David Lee-Smith, Upper Hutt, New Zealand

4 out of 5 stars Capra's early years and a fine documentary to boot.......2002-12-03

God Bless the French, for salvaging "The Matinee Idol," a "lost" Frank Capra movie uncovered in the archives of the Cinematheque Francaise, bringing one of Capra's last silent films back into the world of the living. Johnnie Walker stars as a Broadway star who accidentally falls in with an earnest but untalented regional theater company, the Bolivar Players. His big city pals see the show and it leaves them in stitches, so they invite the hapless rubes to a run on Broadway -- as a comedy act, unbeknownst to the actors themselves. The end of the film is rather abrupt: Walker seeks to make amends for the cruel joke, and to patch things up with the gal who runs the troupe, but doesn't go through the type of elaborate manouevers we'd expect to see a few years later, in a classic screwball comedy. (One imagines the script was clipped and the movie kept shorter than Capra might have liked...) Actress Bessie Love is a really interesting onscreen presence, and the scenes in which she and her fellow actors are jeered at by the audiences in New York are absolutely heartbreaking, in the classic Capra style. Not a stunning movie in artistic terms, though invaluable for any fans of Capra to see him in his work in his early years. (The accompanying biographical documentary, narrated by Ron Howard, is also available separately as a VHS tape, without "The Matinee Idol" as a backup feature.)

4 out of 5 stars Early Capra Comedy/Great Documentary........2001-12-24

THE MATINEE IDOL is a minor Frank Capra comedy made shortly after he came to Columbia in 1928. While certainly not top drawer it already deals with many themes which Capra would expand on as his career progressed. Comic bits, sentiment, and the determination of "the little guy" to succeed are well blended in this short but entertaining feature about a top Broadway star and the country acting troupe he brings to New York as a joke until he falls for their leading lady. The performances by Bessie Love and the now forgotten Johnnie Walker are quite good while Lionel Belmore (the Burgomaster in FRANKENSTEIN and subsequent films) steals the show as the troupe leader. Unfortunately the dated nature of some of the material in which the star performs in blackface (to cash in on the success of THE JAZZ SINGER the year before) does not play well with today's audiences. Although it's tastefully done (what Capra film isn't), it remains a product of its time and should be viewed as such. The real story here is the rediscovery and digital restoration of the film. It is beyond remarkable. The DVD comes with an insert which chronicles the extensive work necessary to bring this film back to life. Whether the film was worth it is debatable, the time and techniques used are not. This will be the future of old movies on video. The added bonus on this disc is the real reason to purchase it. FRANK CAPRA'S AMERICAN DREAM is a superb documentary that no student of film or fan of Capra should be without. An important release for the documentary and the restoration job rather than the film itself. If you are a film lover then it is definitely worth having.

Matinee offers one of the best matches of director and screenplay that you're ever likely to find. Raised on a steady diet of 1950s monster movies, Joe Dante later contributed to the genre with such films as Gremlins and Explorers, but it was Charlie Haas's script for Matinee that gave Dante a perfect platform for comedy, dramatic context, and nostalgic homage. Set in Florida during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, the movie focuses on a schlock-movie promoter named Woolsey (inspired by real-life producer William Castle and played to perfection by John Goodman) who arrives in Key West with his latest Grade-Z extravaganza, Mant, about the raving half-man/half-ant product of "science run amuck." (This movie-within-a-movie is a perfect tribute by Dante, who cast B-movie stalwarts in the kind of roles they'd built careers on.)

Balancing youthful exuberance with the ominous threat of nuclear attack, Dante finds his alter ego in Simon Fenton, who plays a 15-year-old captivated by Woolsey's cheesy showmanship. This affectionate devotion is matched by Dante, who captures the anxiety of the missile crisis even as Matinee delivers an abundance of humor. Director John Sayles and Dante-movie veteran Dick Miller have cameos as Woolsey's show-biz accomplices, and Cathy Moriarty is brilliant as Woolsey's wisecracking mistress and Z-movie queen. All of this makes Matinee a polished gem that's sweetly entertaining while staying true to the serious context of its story. It's the movie Joe Dante was born to direct. --Jeff Shannon

Description

John Goodman is at his uproarious best as the gregarious creator of sci-fi thrillers, circa 1962, who brings his unique brand of showmanship to the unsuspecting residents of Key West, Florida for the premiere of his latest offering on the eve of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great tribute to 50's era horror films and panic in the streets.......2007-01-20

I felt that the advertising for this movie was somewhat misleading. I expected to see a film about John Goodman portraying a loose characterization of showman William Castle. Instead, the main focus of the film is a young boy, Gene Loomis, whose father is a soldier who is dispatched to active duty during the Cuban missile crisis, which is the time period in which this film is set. You have your typical coming-of-age themes revolving around Gene and his friends as they discover their own emerging adolescence, and this consists largely of tired material that has been done to death. However, I did like the scene where the character Sandra refuses to get down on the floor and put her hands behind her head during a civil defense drill, saying that "duck and cover" was useless. I actually remember doing these drills in elementary school back in the 60's.

Somewhat in the background we have John Goodman as old-fashioned showman Lawrence Woolsey, a vaudevillian stuck in the age of cinema who wants to put the show back in picture shows. He is tied into the film because Gene enjoys Woolsey's showmanship as a way to forget about the world around him which seems to be on the brink of self-destruction. Woolsey pulls such stunts as having his girlfriend (Cathy Moriarty) dress a a nurse and ask patrons to sign a waiver releasing Goodman's character from liability in case they die of fright during the movie. This is based on a similar stunt by William Castle and his movie "Macabre". Woolsey also wires the seats to produce a mild electric shock during a key moment in a film, which he labels "Atomo-Vision." That antic is based on what William Castle did during the showing of "The Tingler". Then he rigs still another device to shake things up as buildings on the screen are tumbling and calls it "Rumble-Rama." Again, these are all very similar to the showman-like stunts of William Castle during the 50's and 60's.

The best part of the movie is when Woolsey comes up with an atomic-age monster movie entitled "Mant" that is a composite of cheesy 50's horror films such as "The Fly," and "Them!". "Mant" is about a mutant that is half-man and half-ant and is a total riot. Woolsey's schlock merchant displays just the right mix of con-man materialism and childlike glee at his own bogus movie magic. It's too bad that Goodman's character and his showmanship weren't the main focus of the movie - Goodman was truly born to play the part of Lawrence Woolsey. Perhaps the biggest joke of all is realizing that this movie cost about 100 times the budget of any of the old pictures being parodied.

Besides recognizing all of the silly rituals such as the civil defense drills that people have performed and always will perform in order to feel like they have some control in an uncontrollable situation - remember the run on duct tape and plastic sheeting four years ago? - this movie really made me wish that there was a William Castle collection on DVD. Some of Castle's films were not so bad, and some were so bad they were good - "Macabre" comes to mind - but all of them were memorable. But none of them outside of "House on Haunted Hill" and "The Tingler", both starring Vincent Price, are ever on TV anymore.

5 out of 5 stars A loving tribute to the great Wm. Castle..........2004-10-13

I really love this film. The bottom-line subject matter of the Cuban missile crisis is a catalyst, but the subject of the film is the innocence of youth and the reactions toward it, living in Key West, FL. The seriousness of that situation is alleviated when Goodman arrives, a film director of gimmicky horror films, a direct reference to William Castle.Director Joe Dante juxta-imposed the political and pop-culture idea with brilliance. This film never fails to entertain. Goodman is terrific, Cathy Moriarty is the best of all. Young Simon Fenton is great as the real star of the film. It's scary and fun and silly and ALL the things that make movies entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Is This MY Life?.......2004-09-20

I was 12 years old during the Cuban Missle Crisis, in love with cheap, schlocky horror movies (ANYTHING with Vincent Price!), and had a subscription to "Famous Monsters of Filmland" Magazine, so, except for living in Florida (I lived in Hollywood - well - Los Angeles, the only place for a film fanatic to grow up) this could be my biography. When the boy is shown with monster magazines spread all over his bed, they're real magazines from the period, and I had every last blessed one of them! I also had the monster models in his bedroom. When he turns into a fount of movie minutia at lunch, he IS me at school lunch, the kid who knew the difference between William Castle and Roger Corman, who couldn't have mistaken Dick Miller, who knew every trivial fact about every trivial horror movie ever made, and who would share them all with anyone in earshot. This hilarious yet heartfelt movie pushed all my nostalgia buttons. Even now, I can say what's that poster for "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" doing in a 1962 movie theater when the film hadn't even been shot yet? I remember the panic in our local grocery store during the missle crisis, and it was exactly as Dante shows it in the film. It's my favorite John Goodman performance. He was born to play William Castle, aka "Lawrence Woolsey". This is Joe Dante at his best. Apparently he and I had the exact same childhood.

2 out of 5 stars What did I miss?.......2004-08-06

Completely boring and uninteresting. I guess I missed the point. And I wanted to like this movie!

5 out of 5 stars Serendipity Cinema #10.......2004-06-10

A film you may never have heard of, but really should see. Trust me. If you grew up at the movies, like I did, this film is a slam-dunk. You went to the shows and devoured films like "It, The Terror From Beyond Space," & "Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers." The kid in this film is you (or me) and Lawrence Woolsey played by John Goodman is the guy who gave us our favorite junk movies. And add to that that it all takes place in Southern Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and you have a deliciously fun film(I see that look in your eye and you'll just have to trust me on this) Fine performances all around and Joe Dante (a heroically underappreciated director) directing. Goodman's character is based on real-life producer William Castle who was known as much for his stunts as his movies. He gave us "The Tingler" crawling under the seats of the audience, and on one film actually gave the audience mild shocks through wires in their seats. He also issued "Death by Fright" Insurance policies in the lobby, and had an actress dressed like a nurse on duty,
just in case you had a heart attack. It is all gloriously remembered here. They even lets us see portions of the film he's trying to sell. "Half Man! Half Ant! He's Mant!" You'll see a bunch of stars of the B-Movie heaven here, but I'll let you find them, that's the fun. Even the clever little send-up of Disney films of the '60's ("The Shook Up Shopping Cart," with dead Dad coming back as a shopping cart and trying to solve crimes.) would make this worth seeing. This is not an epic, this is just a great little find. My friends, you put the joy of movie hokem next to the true terror of a world on the edge of Nuclear war, and you have a little film that has a lot to say, but never forgets what it is, and what it is meant to do. Goodman's character sums it all up when he tells the teen hero: "You think grown-ups have it all figured out? That's just a hustle, kid.
Grown-ups are making it up as they go along just like you. You remember that, and you'll do fine."

5 out of 5 stars DTS = Ear Candy.......2007-01-11

I have owned this CD and DVD several times over. Unfortunately, it continues to be stolen or disappear from my collection. The first time I purchased this CD was in the early 90's when a friend of mine told me about the best CD he had ever heard.

The second time I lost this CD, I searched and searched for another copy and stumbled on the DVD at one of the big box retailers. It was discounted and discontinued. What a find!!! I snatched it up, took it home and immediately popped it into my DTS enabled sound system.

DTS was made for Toy Matinee. The best way that I can describe this album is that it swirls. I have several other DTS albums, but none compare. Toy Matinee engulfs the listener and takes them on a happy roller coaster ride of sound and imagination.

I have once again lost my Toy Matinee DVD and am searching for another copy. This album, especially in DTS, would be my #1 Desert Island Disc.

3 out of 5 stars NOT DVD-Audio!!.......2006-11-17

I am not going to comment on the quality of this CD or it's content. Read the other reviews for that. I just want to clarify to anyone who might buy this that this is NOT a DVD-Audio disc. There exists no encoding on this disc that you can access with a DVD-Audio player that you cannot access with a regular DVD player. In fact, this is technically not even a DVD. It has no menus, and the DVD remote has no effect other than play, FF, Rew, etc. This is an audio CD encoded in DTS 5.1. That's it. I have a Pioneer 578A which plays every type of disc there is, and it identifies it as such. When I insert a disc, it will say on the front panel, "DVD", "DVD-Audio", "CD", "VCD", "SVCD", "MP3", "SACD", etc. When I insert this disc, it says "CD". I even put it in my portable boombox, and while it obviously could not play it (it was all static), it did recognize the number of tracks and the total time of the CD when I inserted it.
So yes, a DVD player with DTS is required to play this disc, but it is NOT a DVD-Audio disc. It does play through my DVD 6-ch analog inputs (used for true DVD-Audio), but it is only playing what is already being encoded from the player itself.

5 out of 5 stars The best album I ever bought.......2001-10-17

I was lucky enough to find this gem on the $... rack almost ten years ago, and nothing I've purchased before or since can even come close to measuring up to the polish, dedication and poetry I found on this album. Kevin Gilbert is in my opinion the best lyricist in the modern era - so if you enjoy this album, I'd recommend his solo album, Thud. It's a little bit darker and moodier than Toy Matinee, but it has it's poignant moments as well. Snag this album if you get the chance, you will not be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Big problems. BIG ones........2001-06-10

Okay: why three stars? I had the CD years ago, it was stolen, et cetera. Five stars for the album. Now- I got this DVD and it won't play. NOTHING comes out- and I have a mighty advanced DVD player, so it's not a technology thing. I've had it playing for 26 minutes, all the while poking every applicable button on the player's face: DTS, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby 2.0, 5.1, SRS, standard 2-channel stereo, even tried to just treat it like a movie- NOTHING! And during all of this, I removed the DVD and popped in movie after movie, and CDs too- and they all worked. Even my old Laserdiscs (this unit plays everything!) worked fine. Now on the TV, I have the menus, and can scroll all over them. No problem. There is no Video Whatever that they advertised, and when I poke the tiny "L" to the left of the track listing (to access lyrics), again- nothing happens. So what gives? I think I am going to scream. So for NO AUDIO, I offer one star, and that averages with the 5 star rating above to net a mediocre 3. Not bad for never having heard it, eh? Someone- anyone- please fill me in here. What am I missing?

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing........2001-06-01

The CD blew me away when I first heard it. I didn't think a DTS remaster could be THAT much better. Boy was I wrong. With the rythem parts coming from the rears as well as amny of the backing vocals, making good use of the center channel as well as much crisper, cleaner bass. Wow. Kevin Gilbert never sounded so good. Also of note, this CD is actually a DVD Audio disc. It has: DTS 5.1 and DOlby Digital 2.0 for regular DVD players, as well as an enahanced 5.1 for DVD Audio players.

5 out of 5 stars not really for children.......2007-07-23

I got this film by mistake thinking it was the John Goodman film, but it came on a slow day and I decided to watch it.There are gay and pedofile themes to this film and though it has some very funny scenes I would not call it a comedy. The acting is very good and I found myself going over the story in my head days after watching it.It is a good film but do not plunk it in the dvd player thinking it will entertain the kids while you do your own thing.

        Product Description

John Goodman's full-throttle performance as a William Castle-inspired schlockmeister propels Joe Dante's delightful and charming comedy Matinee. The film takes place during the November 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, a time when America's innocence began to crumble. Goodman plays film producer Lawrence Woolsey, who is in Key West to premiere his latest horror epic, "Mant," the story of a man who turns into a giant insect ("Half Man! ... Half Ant! ... All Terror!"). He's busy rigging the local movie theater with all manner of gimmicks, such as Atomo-Vision and Rumble-Rama, and stationing a buxom nurse -- played by Woolsey's girlfriend and leading lady Ruth (Cathy Moriarty) -- in the lobby to assist potential heart attack victims. Amidst all the hubbub, a quartet of local teenagers gear up for the big premiere: Gene (Simon Fenton), a Navy brat whose father is on alert for the duration of the crisis; Stan (Omri Katz), Gene's friend who has a furious crush on Sherry (Kellie Martin); and Sandra (Lisa Jakub), the daughter of two beatnik free-thinkers. As the premiere of "Mant" gets closer and Soviet-U.S. tensions increase, the four teenagers' problems and desires also mount to the boiling point.

5 out of 5 stars Matinee is better than "Lobsterman from Mars".......2007-08-25

A promoter of movies is coming to town early to set up the equipment needed for the big show. This is at the height of the A-bomb scare era (duck and cover.)

A boy from the near by military base in Florida and a mysteriously girl that is a free thinker and has a more realistic concept of nuclear destruction, strike up a friendship with the promoter.

This movie has the same concept of spoofing most of our favorite bug movies. It also has an underlying script, which changes this movie from a "Lobsterman From Mars" (1990), to more of an "A Christmas Story" (1983) feel. You could have been there in the 60's. And footage is shown from the real films that it is spoofing.

Once again the MANT (man-ant) puts his appendages where they don't belong.
