    Description

One of the greatest comedy teams of all time keeps one step ahead of the law and the criminals in this wild and wacky farce. Abbott and Costello, together for the last time, prove they're still on first with rapid-fire timing and gags galore! All Lou Henry (Costello) wants is a happy life with his two adopted children and to run Kiddyland, the local amusement park. But the local welfare board thinks he's an unfit father, and is determined to take the children away! To make things worse, his friend Bud (Abbott), always up to his eyes in gambling debt, has now run afoul of the mob and needs Lou's help. Can Bud and Lou get back on the merry-go-round, or will they end up in a real shooting gallery?

    4 out of 5 stars A&C Meet The Mob.......2007-02-23

That should have been a subtitle title for Dance With Me Henry. While it's not their best work, a complicated plot which gets more complicated as it goes along, Henry is enjoyable if you like mob films. This represents a change in the direction of A&C films, with Lou playing Lou Henry, a play-it-straight, intelligent proprietor of Kiddyland amusement park. All he wants is to keep the Welfare Board from declaring him an unfit parent and take away his two adopted children. Bud plays Bud Flick, the semi-shady friend of Henry, who runs up a $20,000 gambling debt and gets in hot water with the mob. Flick uses Henry's generosity and friendship to bail himself out, with disastrous results, even leading to Lou being wrongly arrested for the murder of the D.A.

As this was to be their last film together, the change in character was used to try something new. While Henry will often remind the viewer of a 1950s mafia film, such as The Untouchables, there are plenty of laughs along the way. For instance, the very last chaotic scene in the amusement park contains plenty of slapstick humor. Also, the slick talking Flick manages to confuse Costello into disagreeable situations, as in many of their earlier films. Granted this is an atypical A&C movie, but any A&C fan will appreciate the boys' work here. As with other atypical A&C films, such as Time of Their Lives and Little Giant, Dance With Me Henry includes some of their most creative work.

ABBOTT & COESTELLO'S LAST FILM AS A COMEDY TEAM "DANCE WITH ME HENRY",IS
A SAD FINAL ENTRY. I BOUGHT THIS FILM ALLREADY KNOWING THAT THIS IS FAR
FROM EVER BEING A CLASSIC,BUT I AM A COLLECTOR AND A FAN OF THE OLD COMEDY
TEAMS OF YESTERYEARS.THIS FILM IS A MUST FOR ANY SERIOUS FAN.SURPRISINGLY
A BIG MAJORITY OF BUD & LOU'S FILM HISTORY IS AVAILABLE ON DVD,WHERE AS
OTHER GREAT COMEDY TEAMS ARE HARD TO LOCATE AND IT IS VERY RARE TO COMPLETE AN ENTIRE COLLECTION."DANCE WITH ME HENRY",FAILS TO DELIVER SEN-
TIMENT OR COMEDY,BUD & LOU LOOK TIRED AND BOTH OF THEM CRAWL FROM ONE
SCENE TO ANOTHER.IN MY OPION THE DIRECTOR HAD NO SENSE OF CONNECTION ON
HOW TOO CONSTRUCT A FILM.BUT ALSO BUD & LOU SEEM UNCARING,THEY REALLY
DON'T TRY TO LIFT THE HEAVIENESS OF A FILM THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LIGHT AND
LOOSE.EVEN UNDER POOR DIRECTION ABBOTT & COSTELLO COULD'VE SPARKED SOME
    ENERGY INTO THEIR SWANSONG.

3 out of 5 stars Final film, better than many of A/C's .......2006-12-23

Here was another chance for Lou Costello to show his acting talents - a prior effort, The Time Of Their Lives - was also an impressive performance. Too bad he never got to play Mayor LaGuardia on film, as I've read. He's capable of generating much pathos, where an actor noted for frantic slapstick might exaggerate, or be overly sentimental. His role as the proprietor of "Kiddyland", a nearby amusement park convenient to the kids he's taken in, to the concern of a local social worker, gives him room to show what he can do. His buddy Bud is also effective, in a more, shall we say "humbling role", compared to the affable con-man he usually plays.
What's really wrong in this oddball but fun affair is the ill-conceived, overdrawn plot involving Bud's gambling habits and his less than honorable cohorts who occasionally supply his funding. The mix of kids and crooks is at times very awkward - in fact there's a very bizarre scene in which a young girl witnesses a murder at the park, later to be questioned. The victim is the actor who played the Inspector on "The Adventures Of Superman" TV series, interestingly enough, also directed by Charles Barton. It was very poor scripting not to provide for this character to appear at the end, recovered from the gunshot.
I enjoyed the use of the 1950s classic, "Dance With Me, Henry" (of course based upon the slightly risque "Work With Me Annie" by Hank Ballard And The Midnighters); theres a nice scene where the children dance to the General Audience version at Kiddyland when the bad guys are vanquished.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting to say the least.......2005-07-09

Their last film, uses the team in non-comedic team roles. Not the first time, but it really stands out here. For an A&C fan, worth looking to see the changes that they went through as a team and all. Mostly this is a Lou vehicle, worth a look, but certainly not a classic.

4 out of 5 stars Not their funniest, nor worst, but appropriate final film........2005-06-18

Dance With Me, Henry was the last film the great comedy team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello made together, and far from their worst. Costello is the proprietor of Kiddyland, an amusement park, an appropriate character for his child like comedy style. Abbott is his gambling partner.
The main part of the plot concerns crooks Abbott is indebted to, but there's a subplot about orphans and Costello losing custody of his kids due to a nosy, prim social worker played to perfection by the great character actress Mary Wickes (Who Done It?, On Moonlight Bay, Father Dowling Mysteries).
The supporting cast also includes former child star Gigi Perreau, Robert Shayne (who played Inspector Henderson on Superman) as the district attorney, and, as the Priest at the orphanage, Frank Wilcox, recognizable from numerous TV guest shots like Brewster on The Beverly Hillbillies, Wally's principal on Leave It To Beaver, and a judge on Perry Mason.
Much of the comedy in this one may seem hackneyed or aimed at children - such as the extensive chase through the amusement park at the end - but there is some good original comedy as well, such as when Lou, suspected of murdering the DA, is questioned by cops, and gradually through the long, intense interrogation, he breaks down each cop, one after another. Plus, it's the only A & C film with rock music, or at least Rythm & Blues.
Dance With Me Henry is an appropirate final film for the great team, with higher production values than many of their other later films, certainly far better than Africa Screams, for instance, but more memorable for the characters they play than for laughs.

2 out of 5 stars HIT ME is a miss.......2003-07-23

I love Jim Thompson novels, and I love a good film noir, so I was doubly disappointed when I saw this movie. The direction, while technically proficient, sets the wrong tone, wavering uneasily between brutal violence and goofy antics. The annoying soundtrack was no help, as it seemed at times like it was intended for a light comedy. Elias Koteas' one-note performance portrays his character as if he was totally clueless, making him look as if he had just graduated from the Blue Lagoon School of Acting (Some day I'm going to count how many close-up shots there are of his dumbstruck face. There seemed to be quite a few.). When you find some of the supporting characters are more interesting, you know the movie is in trouble.

    3 out of 5 stars Coen-Lite.......2003-07-16

A reasonable attempt at noir, HIT ME -- photographed far too lustrously to be true noir -- packs a few punches after the first twenty minutes (questionable editing) but is hanging off the ropes by the last, dizzying round (even more questionable editing). Like any good fight, the film works best in the middle -- dodging and jabbing and poking with a learned freshness -- and what an exciting tale it weaves.

In the end, HIT ME plays out much like a Coen Brothers production (BLOOD SIMPLE, FARGO, etc.) only heavily watered down.

Elias Koteas plays Sonny, a bellhop at the long-dying Stillwell Hotel. He's too old to start thinking about his future, and he's not quite young enough to remember the lessons of his youth. He lives in the moment, which the director (SECRETARY's Steven Shainberg) displays at great length with Sonny's closeups of rehearsing his room service delivery skills while riding the elevator. Still, one scheming friend and a tryst with a beautiful Canadian hustler later, Sonny finds himself wrapped up in the middle of a heist, stealing money from patrons holed up at the Stillwell for an annual poker game.

Adapted from Jim Thompson's novel, "A Swell Looking Babe," Denis Johnson makes some curious choices with the screenplay that probably wouldn't have found wider success in Hollywood unless he had incorporated a happier ending. That's one of the plagues of Thompson's books: don't expect a rosy ending, and HIT ME follows suit with more than its fair share of twists and turns. After all, the beauty of noir is that nothing -- even the most perfectly hatched sting -- goes off without a hitch. The film manages to keep the viewer guessing -- up to a point -- but the formulaic pacing could've packed a stronger jolt in the climax.

Still, what director Shainberg learned from HIT ME he puts to far greater use in SECRETARY: in that film, the underdog is allowed moments of glory, and characters are allowed to blossom into their own personal level of happiness, albeit slightly perverted. Here, within the oft-traveled hotel corridors and Sonny's filthy living room set of HIT ME, the greatest obstacle the story presents is the duldrums of Sonny's life: come the film's conclusion, he's in a far worse place than when the whole affair began.

2 out of 5 stars Fun film, but a little too long........2003-04-27

I rented this movie cause it it had an interesting story. A bellhop in total mess. Its fun and chilling at times, but this movie is little longer then it should be. Elias Kortas is simply a great actor. He makes this movie. He is such a young Robert Dinero.

This film was done in 1998, but just released on video/DVD cause it was done by the director who did "Secretary." This film I wouldn't put in "Film Noir" class like the back of box says, but I guess in the new genre of sorts: Post-Tarantino.

This movie is perfect for a rental. Instead of picking the usual Hollywood BS, you should give this one a shot. William H. Macy has a very small role so be warned when you see him on the cover.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing entry in the Film Noir genre.......2003-04-21

"Hit Me" is a 1998 film recently released for the rental market. Director Steven Shainberg's more recent, and much better film, "Secretary," also just appeared as a rental.

"Hit Me" is the story of a none-too-swift loser bellhop, Sonny (Elias Koteas) who works for a hotel that has seen better days. Sonny is responsible for his mentally handicapped brother, larger-than-life Leroy, and the two live in a filthy, messy house. Sonny is trapped in a dead-end job, in a dead-end life, and the only occasional excitement is in the form of harassing phone calls Sonny gets from social workers. It's clear from the beginning that Sonny has a certain amount of suppressed rage, and when an ex-employee re-appears with a scheme to rob an illegal card game about to take place at the hotel, Sonny is easily persuaded to join the gang for his promised 10% ($70,000).

I rented this film for three reasons. 1) It was directed by Shainberg, and I recently watched and enjoyed "Secretary." 2) The film was based on a Jim Thompson novel. 3) The film claimed to be 'film noir.' Now I enjoy film noir when it is done properly--but this film was rather disappointing. Yes, the plot did include a few twists and turns, and there was a tricky female, but the director's style was heavy-handed and intrusive. The elements of comedy fell flat--especially in light of the gruesome scenes towards the end of the film, and the plot was predictable. Elias Koteas delivered a great performance, but even he couldn't salvage this film--displacedhuman

I find that the Japanese aren't afraid to take risks in artistic expression. The one parallel I can think of in my sheltered existence is the book "The heart of darkness" by Joseph Conrad. The "horror" if I may quote. I think of the universality of fear. The main actress seems to transcend the Japanese culture. I guess it is the stereotype in my own head of kimonoes and respectability that begins with taking off your shoes at the door of a Japanese home.

    4 out of 5 stars Freeze me..........2007-05-06

My two cents. The victim/avenger in this flick definitely had some issues, and it was someone that I could sympathize with. But still, I liked it from the standpoint that given the right circumstances, anyone can 'snap.' And she definitely had the circumstances. That's my take on this flick. Four stars...

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2005-10-02

I loved this movie. The plot was interesting and the whole idea of a chick killing rapists and freezing them was awesome. Anyone who doesn't mind some violence and has enough brain cells to read subtitles should check this film out.

4 out of 5 stars "How beautiful it is to be frozen".......2005-07-03

The recent importation of massive numbers of Asian horror titles has kept me busier than a one armed paper hanger. Takashi Miike's voluminous catalogue of films alone--he often makes three or four a year--is usually enough to satiate my hunger for these movies, but when I tire of "Audition," "Dead or Alive," and "Visitor Q" I cast my eyes deeper into the Far East. I can always spend time with the increasing numbers of Korean films, like "The Isle," or even start trying to keep tabs on the latest entries from Thailand. Then there are the Hong Kong Category III shockers, "The Untold Story" and "Ebola Syndrome" to name just two. These latter films are usually so disgusting that I have to spend a few weeks washing my palate out with sub par American slasher knockoffs just to recover from the general nastiness. Recently I've been on an Asian kick again, so I guess it's time to churn out a review or two. Takashi Ishii's "Freeze Me" seems as good a place to start as any. It's a movie from the Land of the Rising Sun that is more at home with a Charles Bronson "Death Wish" picture than a slasher or gore flick.

Yep, what we've got here is a good old-fashioned revenge film, but with greater depth than you would suspect. The film begins by introducing us to a beautiful young woman named Chihiro (Harumi Inoue), a gal with a good job, a nice if quite small apartment, and a caring boyfriend named Nogami (Shunsuke Matsuoka). Our buxom heroine, unfortunately, harbors a horrific secret that is about to come back and bite her in the you know what. Out of the blue, she happens to catch a glimpse of a decidedly unwelcome presence hanging around her mailbox in the apartment building, a guy she knew roughly five years before back in her home town. Through flashbacks, rather cringe inducing flashbacks at that, we come to learn exactly why Chihiro fled from her childhood digs and headed for the bright lights of Tokyo. The chap leering at her from her mailbox, along with a couple of pals, assaulted our young gal in a particularly heinous manner on a cold, snowy day. Moreover, these thugs videotaped the festivities and promptly sold copies through the mail. Now five years later the nightmare returns. All three men will eventually show up at Chihiro's apartment to relive old memories.

The three thugs--Kojima (Shingo Tsurumi), Hirokawa (Kazuki Kitamura), and Baba (Naoto Takenaka)--simply don't worry about Chihiro calling the cops or seeking other assistance. They seem to expect that her fear of being exposed to her boyfriend, whom she didn't tell about the assault, as well as concern for her general reputation should the videotapes reemerge will keep her quiet. They are correct. Chihiro goes to great lengths to keep this secret, mainly by making sure her boyfriend will not come back to the apartment. And the secret is kept to the great detriment of her tormentors. You see, they made the mistake of showing up at her lodgings one by one instead of as a group. This allows Chihiro to kill each of them in grotesque ways (a knife in the shower or a hammer to the head while a tormentor plays a videogame work equally well, it turns out), but the murders present a big problem. What to do with the bodies? She can't very well carry them through the streets of Tokyo. The solution involves ordering a big freezer, placing a body into the contraption, and then using it as a piece of furniture. A problem with the electrical system ultimately leads to a rather malodorous defrosting difficulty and a problematic choice for our heroine. "Freeze Me" is indeed a nasty bit of work.

Ishii's picture is a beautiful piece despite the rather nauseating subject matter. The cinematography works wonders considering nearly all of the action takes place in an extremely tiny apartment, the performances are good for what is essentially an exploitation film, and actress Harumi Inoue is a real beauty who has little objection to prancing about in her birthday suit. More important, however, are the numerous layers to the film. Coldness plays a big role, both metaphorically and literally. The attack took place on an extremely cold winter day, and the memory of the assault has doubtless frozen itself into Chihiro's memory. In some way, that horrific day placed a coldness in our heroine's heart that can only find expression in returning the favor to Hirokawa, Kojima, and Baba. It's no mistake that she chose to put them in freezers; it's merely her way of turning the attack back on her tormentors in a poetic justice sort of way. Of course, I could be reading far more into the film than is actually there. Perhaps "Freeze Me" is nothing more than a mindless exploitation film reveling in images of graphic violence and excessive nakedness. Why not? There will always be an audience for such fare in films, especially when they come from Asia. Filmmakers over in those parts have no qualms about showing things that would never pass the MPAA.

Supplements on the DVD are sparse, limited to a few trailers for other Asian features and a director's biography. Oh well. The film is wacky enough to hold your attention without a bunch of extras muddying up the waters. If you're a fan of films like the "Death Wish" series, any of the Dirty Harry flicks, Meir Zarchi's "I Spit on Your Grave," or Abel Ferrara's "Ms. 45," you'll want to pick up a copy of Takashi Ishii's "Freeze Me." It's a bit deeper than the average American revenge film, at least in my opinion, and the movie will help fill out your collection of films in this important cinematic subgenre.

2 out of 5 stars Japloitation flick. thats all........2005-05-21

This movie is nothing but a exploitation film out of Japan.
Similar to many 80s American films that really should be forgotten, like "I Spit on Your Grave."

There is nothing vengeful about this story, nothing shocking, and not much worth watching.
I mean, you do have a beautiful, full-bosomed lead female who seems to act well, and you have the rapist evil-doers, who seem to act well enough as well.

The movie has scenes of violence against women, and of women and men both being very weak against it. The plot is stupified, and its annoying to see these people, which includes pretty much everyone, act retarded.

Plot: girl is raped five years ago, moves to tokyo, rapists return and want to do it again . . oh no! what could possibly happen??
well in true exploitation film nature, lots of breast, blood, and beer. Seriously.

Is it art? No. Hell no. Rent the Kill Bill series if you want true revenge well served to the point of ecstasy.
Is the acting and directing good? sure, no problems.
Will you remember this movie a few months after seeing it? highly doubtful.

2 out of 5 stars This dud has its moments........2004-09-16

Okay, this is a really bad movie. That said, there are some moments here that are so over-the-top bad that they're funny. The fake accents are so horrible that they become campy and the now notorious love scene involving Sandra Bullock is outright hilarious...and very embarassing. How she could be making love without removing a single garment is a mystery, but the acting in that scene is ridiculous, as well. However, it is certainly memorable. Sandra Bullock shows up for another short scene later in the film, but her role is essentially a throw away part. Then there is the sudden appearance of notable actor Steve Buscemi at the very beginning of the film in which he seems almost ashamed to be in. His character never returns to the story after that. By the end of the film there are so many plot twists that heartfelt boredom ensues. The acting is bad, the budget is obviously low, and the script, which invokes the occasional giggle, is a quivering mass of bulbous drivel. Avoid this film.

1 out of 5 stars The Mob should put out a hit on this movie.......2004-07-05

Sandra Bullock and James Lorinz should both be ashamed to be seen in this movie.I couldn't believe what she did in her sex scene. She must have been really desperate for rent money to agree to do that on film. I will admit that there are a few funny scenes, but not enough to be worth buying the movie. It's filled with bad mobster dialogue and a plot that goes nowhere. Any Anthony Michael Hall fans that want to see this movie because he's listed as being in it, don't bother. You'll see his name in the credits and the top of his head for one split second (if you don't blink during that scene), that's it. Any part he had in it wound up on the cutting room floor (and I'll bet he's happy about that!), which is where the rest of it belongs.

    1 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2004-03-08

This film has to be seen to be believed. It's so bad, it's funny. You've got a bunch of guys prancing around, sticking their chests out, thinking their big hard guys, and then they open their mouths, and horror of horrors, out comes these incredible phoney, gangster accents.

And worst of all is Sandra Bullock. I hope none of the big Hollywood directors who have worked with her, decided to have her in their movie thanks to this. She's dreadful. Her hair is an immediate distraction, due to the severe HUGENESS of it. She must have gone through a couple of hairspray for this. But what's worse is the main scene she's in, is a sex scene. And it's bad. Really bad. Worse than the one in Fire On The Amazon. It's very over the top. Plus, what she does, would probably hurt the guy, as well as her! And she wears some very unflattering underwear, which do nothing for her skinny figure.

Overall this film is bad. Bad bad bad. I cannot stress this enough. Thank God Sandra began to star in some GOOD films, rather than this. What I want to know is who did she have to sleep with, to get to the big Hollywood A-list star she is today?

2 out of 5 stars Stars Lorinz and Darrow Steal the Show in "Me and the Mob".......1999-02-04

James Lorinz and Tony Darrow, stars of the cult classic, "Street Trash," are back with their own brand of pseudo-vaudevillian comedy, in this quasi-comical tale of a failed writer's (Lorinz) relationship with his crooked Uncle (Darrow). Perhaps the only thing better than the comic banter between Lorinz and Darrow is a cameo by then un-known actress, Sandra Bullock, in a sex scene that has to be seen to be believed. Co-produced by Roy Frumkes, the same person credited (some say "responsible") for "Street Trash," the film has its moments (mostly supplied by its dynamite leads), but soon dissolves into a series of disjointed, painfully un-funny scenarios that will leave the viewer more than a bit bleary eyed. Perhaps the writers simply ran out of ideas, which is a shame, because the story itself is fairly inventive. Lorinz and Darrow have both seen better days, most notably Darrow, who has performed bit parts in the last four Woody Allen pictures. If only this kind of success could have been applied to the film itself.
