Raven's ineptitude with a new electronic scheduler lands their famous photographer at a Tipton half way around the world in Italy, strands their two young models somewhere in Central Europe, and threatens to derail the whole photo-shoot. Luckily, Zack and Cody (Suite Life of Zack and Cody) step in to serve as last minute models and the photographer manages to make her way to the correct Tipton Hotel. While she's there, Raven has one of her psychic premonitions and warns Zack and Cody that the surprise party they're planning for their mother's birthday will somehow go very wrong and Maddie and Raven hatch a plot to trick London into wearing a Raven-original dress to an important "Young Heiress Magazine" photo shoot. Hannah Montana (Hannah Montana) also happens to be at the Tipton Hotel where she falls in love with London's Raven-original dress and begs Raven for a dress of her own to wear to an important award show. Back home, Miley (Hannah) suddenly realizes that she and her brother may be holding her father back from his own musical ambitions and the pair makes some big sacrifices to put him back on the road again. My favrite things about this DVD was the beautiful Raven Symone, also Brenda Sing from "Wendy Wu" Hannah Montana rules!!!! She is such a good singer! The only thing that would make the show better is if she sang with Raven (yeahright, in my dreams!!! Some time Kim and me make up our dances to hannah montana's songs! I think the Suite Life of Zack and Cody's show is racest, though.

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-07-16

Although this DVD was not what i was expecting it was fun all the same. I thought the characters would interact a little bit more but the one you saw most was Raven(my least favorite)and Hannah Montana had the least interaction. Nevertheless it was enjoyable and the bonus episode was very funny.

This charming update of Pygmalion (by way of the John Hughes oeuvre, most notably Pretty in Pink) rode the crest of the late-'90s wave of immensely popular teen films (Varsity Blues, etc.), thanks primarily to the immense charisma of its two leads, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook. When school star Zach (Prinze)--who's a jock, smart, and popular--gets dumped by vacuous Taylor (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) after spring break, he's left dateless for the all-important prom. With a little goading from his less-than-sensitive best friend (hunky Paul Walker), he bets that he can make any girl into prom queen a mere eight weeks before the dance. The object of their wager: misfit Laney (Cook), a gawky art student too busy with her paintings and taking care of her brother and dad to worry about school politics. However, after a couple looks from Zach, and a few dates that reveal him to be a hunk of substance, Laney's armor begins to melt--and her stock at school soars. Soon enough, she's the lone candidate for prom queen against the bitchy and relentless Taylor.

What elevates She's All That above the realm of standard teen fare is its mixture of good-natured fairy-tale romance and surprisingly clear-eyed view of high school social strata. The lines of class are demarcated as clearly as if in a Jane Austen novel, but the satire is equally deflating and affectionate. Sure, high school could be bad sometimes, but it was lots of fun too; this is a movie good-natured enough to take time out for an extended hip-hop dance number at the prom. Director Robert Iscove (who also helmed the Brandy-starring TV adaptation of Cinderella) has also assembled a great young cast, including a scene-stealing Anna Paquin as Zach's no-nonsense sister, Kieran Culkin as Laney's geeky brother, and a stupidly goofy Matthew Lillard as a Real World cast member whose arrival shakes things up a little too much. And amidst all the comedy and prom drama, you'd be hard-pressed to find two teen stars as talented, attractive, and appealing as Prinze and Cook. Prinze is an approachable and sensitive jock, though it's Cook who's the true star, investing Laney with confidence, humor, and heart. Like Zach, you'll be hard-pressed not to fall in love with her. By the story's end, both Cook and the film will have charmed the socks off of you. --Mark Englehart

3 out of 5 stars Post grunge My Fair Lady.......2007-06-19

I'd like to think that I am smarter than to watch teen movies, as I haven't been one in a long time. And yet, even the stiffest, most serious of intellectuals such as myself want a little trash now and then so we don't have to think too hard. This was not bad, not bad at all.

This modern day update of Pygmailion / My Fair Lady takes us to a California high school. It's almost the end of the year, and the senior class is getting ready for their end of the year, pre graduation antics. Among them is Laney, the Eliza Doolittle, off in her artistic corner sulking away while the popular kids are off doing things that popular kids do. Freddie Prince Jr, in one of his many leading man roles in teen movies, is the most popular guy in school who has been thrown a sudden curveball. His girlfriend, Taylor, suddenly drops him after going down to Florida for spring break and falling into a hopeless (and I do mean hopeless) affair with Matt Lillard, "star" of the latest season of The Real World on MTV. His friends comfort, but say that he can find another date for the prom just as quickly. They bet him that they can not only find him another woman, but based on his good looks, charm and popularity he can take a lost cause and make her just as A List as he is. They single out Laney, and the chase is on.

A few things put me off about this movie. Firstly, this wasn't a new story (it's Pygmalion / My Fair Lady, like I said). Secondly, it is possible that people really are mindless sheep enough to go along with something once a person in power says to do it, as eventually Laney will not be tarred and feathered once Zach starts bringing her to parties out of her area. Third, if Zach really was such a nice guy (which he seems to be), I have a hard time believing that someone like him would be with a shrew like Taylor to begin with. Looking back, I realize that a lot of the popular kids got their ways with people by making them look bad before others (like when Taylor pours her drink down Laney's dress), and Zach seems too good to do something like that to someone. And fourth, Laney was hot underneith all those ugly clothes and hostile attitude, you could tell through those overalls and thick glasses. Naturally if and when she got dolled up, she would be all she could be rather than look like an ogre in a dress.

It's nice, light entertainment. Have fun with it on a rainy afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars Very good lighted hearted film.......2006-11-12

I like films that are funny and cheerful nothing drab and sad. Something to make you smile and laugh.

4 out of 5 stars She's A Winner.......2006-09-19

I was expecting a predictable teen movie rife with cliche and populated with vapid, albeit good looking, young actors. Was I ever wrong! "She's All That" is a real charmer. It offers cogent insights into teen life and is not without it's tender moments. It's ultimate message, that true change is not cosmetic but comes from within, does not come off as forced or cynical. The cast is quite appealing. Special kudos go to Rachel Leigh Cook as Laney, the "ugly duckling". Cook makes Laney's transformation believable and subtle. Matthew Lillard also has a show-stopping turn as an obnoxious MTV reality show reject. Look quick for Sarah Michelle Gellar in a cafeteria scene.

1 out of 5 stars Soooooooooooo bad.......2006-08-29

Teens don't talk like that. I rip off of 16 candles and so utterly cliched that it felt like a parody.

2 out of 5 stars Laney Boggs was robbed..........2006-06-11

I first saw this movie in high school-I believe i was a senior-And I remember thinking, "High school is NOT like this at all!" Throughout the whole movie. Now, I do understand that this is a fictional movie and therefore it is set in a fictional world, where anything is possible (except Laney Boggs becoming Prom Queen of course), but I felt like this movie was so far out into la la land with it's premise and execution that it was hard to really relate or like any of the characters in the movie. First of all, why do movies always have to over-exagerate the bitchiness of a Prom Queen??? In my school, the Homecoming Court and Prom Court were chock full of nice, friendly kids, and the ones who took home the crowns were voted on because of there personalities, not because they were HOT like Taylor Vaugh or whatever her name was. I hate that stereotype because it doesn't relate to any school-at least any school in the midwest! Also, What was so terribly heinous about Rachel Lee Cook that they would pick her over ANY other girl in the school-So what if she wore ugly clothes and had big glasses-the girl has a killer face and a tiny little body...her only flaw was her love for being a loner. Freddy Prinze Jr. was at his peak in this movie though-he seems to have gone WAYYYYYYY downhill since this movie was released. The best part about this movie is the cheesy makeover sequence when Laney walks down the stairs to Sixpence None The Richer's song KISS ME. The BIGGEST let down of this movie to me though was that Taylor won Prom Queen over Laney. Seriously, that still pisses me off to this day. The ending was just a complete and utter bomb...I wanted that skank Taylor to lose and cry or get totally laughed at or at least have had SOME minor bad thing happen to her. She was just a horrible, snotty witch and nothing bad seemed to happen to her. Oh well, this movie is pretty lame...I will always remember it though because I saw it in the theater with three of my close friends our senior year. Cheesy movie...Laney Boggs was robbed!!!

Choreographer-turned-director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Lenny) turns the camera on himself in this nervy, sometimes unnerving 1979 feature, a nakedly autobiographical piece that veers from gritty drama to razzle-dazzle musical, allegory to satire. It's an indication of his bravura, and possibly his self-absorption, that Fosse (who also cowrote the script) literally opens alter ego Joe Gideon's heart in a key scene--an unflinching glimpse of cardiac surgery, shot during an actual open-heart procedure.

Roy Scheider makes a brave and largely successful leap out of his usual romantic lead roles to step into Gideon's dancing pumps, and supplies a plausible sketch of an extravagant, self-destructive, self-loathing creative dynamo, while Jessica Lange serves as a largely allegorical Muse, one of the various women that the philandering Gideon pursues (and usually abandons). Gideon's other romantic partners include Fosse's own protégé (and a major keeper of his choreographic style since his death), Ann Reinking, whose leggy grace is seductive both "onstage" and off.

Fosse/Gideon's collision course with mortality, as well as his priapic obsession with the opposite sex, may offer clues into the libidinal core of the choreographer's dynamic, sexualized style of dance, but musical aficionados will be forgiven for fast-forwarding to cut out the self-analysis and focus on the music, period. At its best--as in the knockout opening, scored to George Benson's strutting version of "On Broadway," which fuses music, dance, and dazzling camera work into a paean to Fosse's hoofer nation--All That Jazz offers a sequence of classic Fosse numbers, hard-edged, caustic, and joyously physical. --Sam Sutherland

Description

Part tragic, part comic, this outrageous look at life in the fast lane in the Academy Award-winning musical about Bob Fosse's excessive life in show business. Played by Roy Scheider, Fosse's alter-ego drives himself over the edge and soon finds he is caught between a recurring fantasy about his death and the reality of a near-death experience. Dazzlingly presented, this electrifying story about the perils of pushing yourself too hard is filled with Fosse's legendary song-and-dance choreography.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Love his warts.......2007-08-30

I have to admit the title of the DVD, All That Jazz--The Music Edition, puzzled me. Did the last version of the DVD have the music cut out??? Was this just a DVD of the songs, without any movie? Fortunately the naming of the DVD, like so many other things studios do and applaud themselves for, is just a meaningless gimmick. You get the whole movie just as before, in a transfer that looks very good to me. Some reviews called it a "soft print," but I think they're just seeing the photography the way it was intended, with fog filters being used extensively, especially in the scenes with Jessica Lange. Razor-sharp high-contrast cinematography where you can see every pour on the actors' face is a relatively recent phenomenon.

The movie itself harkens back to a different age, one where filmmaking was more personal and more daring. Fosse proves he's as brilliant a film director as he is a stage director. Sound fades in and out and overlap and go echoey. Some of the most dramatic moments are silent. There's rapid cross-cutting and temporal jumps. But none of it is gimmicky, it's all in the service of the story.

Some have criticized that story for being too sympathetic to the Fosse character, played by Roy Scheider in a career-defining performance. (No Oscar?!? Typical.) It's true the script is subtlety very sympathetic to Joe Gideon--despite all his failings, we are offered excuses, not the least of which is his genius. It's true that the screenplay isn't as hard on Gideon as it superficially comes across--this is *not* the hard-hitting, uncompromising, unflinching film that reviewer John Remington thinks it is. He's been "fooled," exactly the way the filmmakers intended. (He's also apparently never seen Fellini's 8 1/2.) Still, it must have been a brave portrait in 1979 to show a main character with an ex-wife and a small daughter popping pills and having open and free sex with every woman who crosses his casting couch. Casting Scheider was a triumph. He has a natural warmth that adds a lot to Gideon's likeability. I cannot imagine the original choice--Richard Dreyfuss--in the role.

The others in the cast are also very effective, from the ex-wife, played by Leland Palmer to the current main girlfriend, played by Ann Reinking. However, you'll note both female characters put pressure on poor Joe Gideon--one to choreography a lame musical solely as her comeback vehicle, one for fidelity only to go to the arms of another man as soon as Gideon takes ill. The other men in his life, mostly annoying producers, managers, agents and competing directors, are portrayed as small and narrow people. Never having worked in his profession, I can't say if this is accurate or not, but again, it *is* designed to make Gideon, for all his faults, look so good. Self-critical All That Jazz is not.

The movie, however, is well-written, directed and paced--until the ending. The last 20 minutes should have been 10. Once Gideon ends up in the hospital the pace starts to drag, and while the final set piece is brilliant and deliciously satirical, it goes on for too long. Still, all that jazz is a very good motion picture and one of the more important films of the 70s. But with a little tweaking, it could have been even better, a masterpiece.

This is Fox's second DVD of the film, and the extras are even more lame than those in the first. So lame they're not worth mentioning, or even checking out by the viewer. A lengthy interview with Schneider would have been nice. If you love this movie this DVD is worth owning, but not for the goodies. I wish Criterion would get its hands on this.

5 out of 5 stars Life and Death On The Great White Way.......2007-06-24

Bob Fosse's 1979 ALL THAT JAZZ is perhaps most famous for the extreme reaction it provokes: you either love it or you hate it. There is no middle ground.

Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a celebrated stage and film director famous for creating dance numbers with a super sexy style--and truly chaotic professional and personal life. Even as he edits a film he has recently directed, he begins rehearsals for a new Broadway show. Even as he duels with his acidic show-biz ex-wife over the needs of their daughter, he cheats on his girl friend with any lovely chorus girl who wants to fall across his bed. He goes from crisis to crisis in a round of late nights fueled by nicotine, caffine, alcohol, and drugs--and he loves every ego-gratifying moment of it. What he does not love is the heart attack he has in the middle of it all.

What divides viewers is not so much the plot as the overall style of the film. Like Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was most famous for his musicals, which were often akin to beautiful but distinctly dark hallucinations of super-stylized motion showing lots of skin. With ALL THAT JAZZ, Fosse takes his unique, highly surrealistic musical style and combines it with the similarly surrealistic approach of such master directors as Fellini. The result is a film that shifts between past, present, and future with glittering musical numbers that leap from the mind of Gideon himself to make wry comment on his egocentric madness--and in which beautiful show girls become the personification of death.

As Joe Gideon, Roy Scheider (perhaps best known for his tough-cop role in THE FRENCH CONNECTION) truly gives the performance of his career; he is amazing in the role of the driven, egocentric director/choreographer who will stop at nothing to pursue his desires, professional or otherwise. The film also gives us two performers who rarely appear on screen: Leland Palmer as Gideon's ex-wife Audrey Paris (a role based on Gwen Verdon) and Ann Rhineking as Gideon's long-suffering dancer-girlfried Kate Jagger (a role, ironically, based on herself.) Both prove extremely memorable--as does Ben Vereen, a performer I do not usually like, appearing here in as the emcee of Gideon's final and most memorable hallucination.

The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is sharp, clean, disquieting, and manages to convey the New York of the late 1970s in remarkable detail; the editing by Alan Heim (who also worked on such memorable films as NETWORK and STAR 80) is also memorable. Indeed, be it lighting, costumes, casting, or overall art design it is virtually impossible to fault the film at any level. Even so--ALL THAT JAZZ remains as likely to divide viewers today as it did in 1979. Movie musicals have changed a great deal over the past decade or so, but ALL THAT JAZZ remains a unique offering. You either get it or you don't; you either like it or you hate it.

There are at least two DVDs on the market. One is a no-frills edition with a good transfer; the other offers several bells and whistles that fans of the film will enjoy. Recommended in either version.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-18

A Fosse lovers must see. I was up for the main group of dancers for this movie oh so many years ago. I remember what I wore to the audition. We all showed up at the St. James theatre in NYC even though there was no audition notice in the trades and no announcement. I remember Fosse coming on the stage and laughing saying "how the hell did you all know about this...?" Well, word of mouth among the gypsies, that's how! He had already chosen his dancers but he liked to see what was around just in case. I was always called back and got to the last call back. Too bad right! Well the rest is history...get this dvd, it is a piece of history and a kind of dance, director, choreographer and discipline that no longer exists. SO sad!

4 out of 5 stars Well executed, entertaining, musical.......2007-03-25

The film is appearantly a loose auto-biographical account of the film's director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Chicago, Star 80). A scrutinizing look at obsession leading to self destruction and finally the transference of pain to others. The film has too many technical high points to mention. Choreography goes without mention and has been mimicked by modern artists, sometimes blatantly. The screenplay is complex enough to be interesting but remains in the realm of 'easily digestible.'

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Mix.......2007-02-24

Since I adore the movie, I can't help but love the soundtrack to All That Jazz. I'm not sure this CD would move every listener as it does me, but I see every scene as I listen and can't help but dance along now and then. Like the movie, this soundtrack is bittersweet and very raw in some places, cheeky and sentimental in others. For a Fosse junkie like me, it's a must have.

Analyze That has more bada bing than its lukewarm reception would lead you to expect. Analyze This (1999) had the advantage of a then-fresh idea--Robert De Niro as a neurotic mob boss seeking therapy with reluctant shrink Billy Crystal--but that idea's stale (and has been handled more authentically in The Sopranos), so this sequel relies on established chemistry and zesty dialogue that matches the original. There's nothing wrong with a retread when it's this funny, and De Niro's latter-day penchant for comedy suits him well when, as kingpin Paul Vitti, he lures Dr. Sobel (Crystal) into a prison breakout scheme involving faked catatonia and West Side Story show tunes. The contrived plot involves Vitti's criminal comeback. Unfortunately, there's little room for Lisa Kudrow as Sobel's sarcastic wife, but De Niro's Raging Bull costar Cathy Moriarty-Gentile is welcomed as a rival mob queen. You want a comedy masterpiece? Fuhgeddaboudit. You want 95 minutes of easy fun? It's right here... and don't miss those obligatory outtakes. --Jeff Shannon

Description

They locked up mob boss Paul Vitti in Sing Sing and that's where he sang sang - bellowing West Side Story tunes and convincing officials he's more suited for a nut house than the Big House. Better yet, the Feds say, let's release Vitti into the custody of his therapist Ben Sobel. ROBERT DE NIRO (Vitti) and BILLY CRYSTAL (Sobel) reprise their Analyze This roles and reteam with filmmaker HAROLD RAMIS (Caddyshack) and co-star LISA KUDROW.

3 out of 5 stars Analyze That.......2006-08-28

Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal return as mobster Paul Vitti and psychiatrist Dr. Sobel. In five minutes it reminds you of pretty much every running gag from the first movie, in fine fashion. Which is funnier? That's a BS question, Joel Siegel. Both are a pleasure. This film manages to trot out the tired old "gangsters want to make movies about gangsters" gimmick without boring me. I suspect I didn't appreciate Jelly enough the first time around. He's awesome.

3 out of 5 stars WHEN YOU'RE A JET..........2006-02-18

Seeing Robert DeNiro sing I FEEL PRETTY from West Side Story in a hospital gown is quite a sight indeed. ANALYZE THAT, the sequel to ANALYZE THIS, reunites DeNiro with fussbudgety Billy Crystal in a fairly entertaining, if often times slow, comedy. DeNiro fakes insanity to get out of prison and Crystal is assigned by the FBI to treat and watch over him. It's fun to watch DeNiro fail at all his "normal" jobs and when he lands a stint as the creative consultant for a tv crime series, his expertise comes in handy for his plot to dismantle rival gangs. Anthony LaPaglia in an uncredited role is hilarious as the Australian star of the series who seeks guidance from DeNiro and Cathy Moriarty-Gentile (De Niro's costar from RAGING BULL) does well in her role as one of the gang's leaders. The late Joe Viterelli is hilarious as DeNiro's sidekick, Jelly, but Lisa Kudrow is pretty bland as Crystal's wife.
DeNiro is proving himself to be a deft comic actor and Crystal does okay too; it's all lightweight and predictable but enjoyable too.

1 out of 5 stars ANALYZE DEEZ!!!!.......2005-03-22

I thought the original was pretty good,
but this sequel was pure torture to watch!
I'de rather eat a giant roach, than watch
this movie again! Without question, one of
the worst comedys ever written!

4 out of 5 stars "Analyze That" Review.......2005-02-24

I don't see the deal with everyone saying it's a bad movie. It's not bad at all, infact I almost perfer Analyze That over Analyze This. If you haven't seen this, I'd reccomend atleast renting it. It doesn't have as many 'laughing out loud' parts, but it still is a great comedy.

2 out of 5 stars "Back in therapy".......2005-01-22

While visiting some family in Utah a few years ago we decided to rent a few movies to pass the unforgivably hot mid-summer weather. We ended up renting "Analyze That" and boy, what a mistake that was! We were expecting at least a mildly funny sequel to 1999's "Analyze This." The potential was there, it's not as if writers (of course it's never a good sign to see numerous writers) Peter Tolan, Peter Steinfeld, and Harold Ramis didn't have decent material to work with; Robert DeNiro, Billy Crystal, Lisa Kudrow, and a funny and entertaining plotline regarding mobsters and therapy. However, this being Hollywood and all, another sequel was botched. It's because of movies like these that sequels have such a bad reputation.

Despite a few genuine laughs in the first twenty minutes or so regarding DeNiro and some "fish out of water" situations, the movie seemed to go downhill soon after. The jokes became few and between as the film laboriously plowed its way through an over-the-top heist setup and execution that felt about as inspired as "Crossroads." Now either they ran out of jokes, they didn't have enough time to invest in an actual story, or the material itself has been played out in so many different ways already ("The Sopranos", "The Whole 9 Yards", "Mickey Blue Eyes", etc. etc.), that there was simply nothing left to write about.

The Beat That My Heart Skipped could single-handedly give remakes a good name. Based on the 1978 American movie Fingers, The Beat... stars Romain Duris (L'Auberge Espagnole) as Tom, a hoodlum who works the shady side of real estate--evicting poor families from slums, cutting quick and dirty deals in the middle of the night--following in the footsteps of his sleazy father. But clearly Tom loathes both himself and everything he does. One night he accidentally runs into the man who managed Tom's mother, who was a pianist; the manager asks Tom himself to audition, as Tom once showed promise. All at once Tom hires a tutor and neglects his "duties," raising the ire of his cohorts but starting to make himself happy. This could be hokum about the power of art, but Duris' performance is so visceral, so emotionally vivid and engaging, that The Beat That My Heart Skipped becomes a remarkable parable about the danger of betraying yourself--all the more powerful because Tom's life doesn't simply get better, it grows dangerously more complicated. A superb movie with excellent performances throughout, making Duris' standout work all the more impressive. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From Jacques Audiard, the acclaimed filmmaker of Read My Lips, comes this haunting new thriller that fuses two unlikely worlds to create a stunning portrait of a young gangster. Romain Duris (L'Auberge Espanol), in a standout performance, plays Tom, a 28 year-old who seems destined to follow in his father's footsteps as a Parisian property shark working in a sleazy and sometimes brutal world. However, a chance encounter with his late mother's music agent leads him to believe that he can become, like his mother, a concert pianist. In earnest, he starts preparing for the audition with the help of a beautiful, young virtuoso pianist who has just arrived from China. She doesn't speak a word of French; music is their only exchange. But pressures from the ugly world of his day job soon become more than he can handle...

5 out of 5 stars Music and the journey towards self-redemption.......2007-06-17

There is a distinct quality and style that most French films have, among them, the subtle music that plays on the background, or the use of silence to heighten emotions. But this movie made use of a much `louder' more modern music to really bring in the characters. Directed by Jacques Audiard, The Beat that my Heart Skipped is actually a remake based on the 1978 American movie Fingers. But unlike some remakes, it surpasses the original, not only because of the vision of its Director but for the powerful portrayal of its lead actor, Romain Duris.

In one of the most memorable performances of any actor of his generation, Duris transformed himself into Tom, a hoodlum who terrorizes poor urban dwellers in order to buy cheap properties and sell them for profits. There is a tradition to his work as he inherits the same `vocation' from his father. There is, however, a certain side to Tom, an artistic side, the one talent he inherited from his dead mother- the love of classical music and an ability (a remarkable talent, actually) to play the piano. As he struggles to maintain some semblance of `humanity' in his arresting and despicable character, he has to make a choice whether to remain loyal to his father and continue in their work or pursue a career in music, perhaps the only way out for him and a chance to redeem himself.

"De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté", is more than just a film about self-discovery and of love, it is a powerful testament to the ability of an individual to change.

4 out of 5 stars Fast, tense with outstanding acting and a clever storyline.......2007-05-19

Jacques Audiard, who previously gave us the very interesting Read My Lips (2001) and the cute and clever Venus Beauty Institute (1999), manages to create here a story about a character who is both a petty gangster and a pianist. Not exactly your usual combination of talents. Romain Duris plays Thomas Seyr who is that character. Duris brings an animal sensuality and an artist's sensitivity to the part. He is an actor of unusual skills and vitality. Audiard gets the most out of him.

In the beginning Tom Seyr is in apprenticeship to take over his father's way of life in a French version of the protection racket. Their particular hustle involves getting properties condemned by trashing them or infecting them with rats or some other vermin, forcibly throwing out squatters or tenants, then buying the property on the cheap, and then finally selling it at a nice profit. In the end, Tom...well, I can't give you the ending, but I can say that it is entirely agreeable and surprising with just a little twist on what we might expect.

Neils Arestrup plays the father. There are some other interesting characters and a lot of macho action, a bit of blood here and there, some quick and easy sex. And then there is an old piano teacher that Tom happens to run into one day who invites him to an audition. Tom has not played the piano seriously for years, but just seeing his old teacher brings back the thrill and the deep intimacy he once had with music, and recalls to him the career of his deceased mother, who was once a concert pianist who had hoped that her son would be too. He had the talent.

But of course playing the piano at that level is not something you can take up, let go, and then go back to. But Tom thinks maybe he can do it with a little practice. But he needs a teacher to prepare for the audition. When he tries to get one he is effectively laughed at since he is 28-years-old and is very much out of practice and indeed never really practiced that much. But by chance (there are a number of plot furtherances in this film that come about by chance--but that is not a problem because the chance meetings seem natural and are events that would probably happen eventually)--and so by chance he is hooked up with a young woman fresh from China who speaks no French, but is an expert pianist who needs a little money. She agrees to help him. Her name is Miao Lin. She is played brilliantly with subtlety and finesse by French-Vietnamese actress Linh Dan Pham, whom I previously saw in Indochine (1992) playing the adopted child of Catherine Deneuve's character.

The acting ability of Romain Duris and Linh Dan Pham are what carry this film. Audiard's direction is a bit scattered at times and especially in the beginning lacks focus, but a clever storyline and his ability to get great performances from the players overcome these faults.

See this for Romain Duris who gives a virtuoso performance and for Linh Dan Pham who captivates with restrained intensity.

4 out of 5 stars And The Beat Goes On.......2007-04-22

I missed the first half hour of this film, but still enjoyed it. Tom, (Romain Duris) is a Real Estate Agent. Apparantly, in France, this involves a lot more brutality and thuggishness than it does in Bakersfield (though there have been some indictments recently). Squatters are brutally evicted, debts are collected with force, fires are set, rats released. Tom got into the business like his father, but his mother was a pianist, and he showed promise there, too. A chance encounter puts him back on a musical path.

This could be just a syrapy fable about the power of Art and Music to transform, but it never gets too sacharine. A visceral performance by Duris and a good script makes for a compelling tale well told. When you think about it, it is about a man taking piano lessons. So, to make that come across onscreen is quite an achievement. One scene shows him out with his Real Estate colleagues, waiting in the van to roust some squatters from a property. Tomorrow is his big audition, and he practices a presto movement sans piano. His fingers move incredibly fast, but you can almost hear the music. You feel like he is really practicing his piece, not just wiggling his fingers randomly.

A semi happy ending with just the right amount of ambiguity provides the dénouement we crave.

2 out of 5 stars Like many others french movies.......2007-04-15

Lately There's a standard format in many french movies. A few of them are really interesting. This is not one of them. Very predictable, very clichè movie. Be careful with all the 5 stars review, not just for come from French must be a good movie. There's a lot of people that think in this way.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Shoot the Piano Player.......2007-04-07

"De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté"(2005)...aka "The Beat That My Heart Skipped" written/directed by Jaques Audiard is a French remake of James Toback's cult movie "Fingers" (1978) with Harvey Keitel. The film tells the story of a young man Thomas (Romain Duris) who is torn by two different sides of his personality - one dreams of becoming a virtuoso piano player and the other - a ruthless debt-collector and enforcer. I think that Duris's was the one of the best performances of last year - so convincing he was as a man who walked on the edge of two realities. The best moments of the film are the ones between Thomas and his piano tutor, the girl whom he hired to prepare himself for an audition that was offered to him by a man who had been the manager of Thomas's late mother, the talented concerto pianist. The man remembers Thomas who had inherited his mother's talent and used to study piano seriously until his mother died when he was 18 and he joined his father in the "real estate" and debt- collecting business. The tutor, a young pianist from China who arrived to Paris recently, does not speak any French and Thomas does not speak her language - so they have to relay to music to understand one another. The film is not perfect, and I am not too fond of director Jaques Audiard's frequent and abrupt cuts of the scenes but it is superbly acted, energetic, and well written.

I was lucky enough to pay 2.99 for this at my local used CD shoppe. It was worth the 2.99 and that's about it. It is essentailly a bootleg , a poor man' s " Cliff em all" , if you wil. Some cool vintage clips of dime playing guitar during the Pre-Cowboys era....and some excellent photo montages. THe rest of hte DVD is a bunch of skits of him lighting fireworks everyplace. Saw the DVD once, now hoping to make a few dollars off it by selling on ebay. For hardcore fans only.

4 out of 5 stars DIMEBAG = LEGEND.......2007-03-07

If you're reading this, then I'm sure you're a fan of Pantera, Damageplan or of Dimebag to some capacity. If we're reviewing this DVD, then we're fans as well. However, I'm a little upset at the first installment of Dimevision.

Dimevision is just a collection of rare footage as seen through the eyes of Dime and through his family and closest of friends. Most of these moments are backstage or at Dime's home in Dallas. What's great is the fascinating footage of Dime as a teen playing in clubs and as opening acts for the likes of Metallica and others.

What I didn't like about this DVD is that it should've been more of a documentary of Dime's life with interviews and timelines and whatnot. I know it's just a collection of his works throughout his time, but I feel that the DVD was poorly organized and didn't really tell the true story of how this great legend came to be. As a fan, I feel empty knowing that Dime's guitar playing is gone forever. There is no more Damageplan, there is no more Pantera. I have a hard time finding a replacement. Part of me knows there is none and part of me wants there to be none. This is why Dimevision should've been more of an in depth view into Dime's life with some sense of organization rather than just some random clips from here and there.

A legend like Dime deserves a lot more. I would love to hear the thoughts from Dime's family and friends. And yes, I had a HUGE problem that Phil was excluded from any scene in this DVD. I am not a big Phil fan, but you can see the agenda of this DVD a mile away. That doesn't serve Dime true justice. But who knows, maybe I'm just not fully appreciating this DVD for what it really is. Maybe the other volumes will be better. Overall, this is a good pick up for Dime fans.

This concert film becomes gripping, moving, and triumphantly funny when Margaret Cho stops with the "fag-hag" jokes and gets real in recounting her ill-fated sitcom and its devastating effects on her mental and physical well-being. In the spirit of Richard Pryor talking about his infamous freebasing accident in Live on the Sunset Strip and Julia Sweeney discussing caring for her cancer-stricken brother in God Said, "HA!", Cho's account of her ill-conceived 1994 ABC sitcom All American Girl is victorious, a "you go, girl" call to empowerment. Her happiness at finding mainstream acceptance was short-lived when the network expressed concerns about her weight. A desperately insecure Cho proceeded to lose 30 pounds in a month and wound up in the hospital with kidney failure. Even more humiliating was the special consultant hired to instruct her how to appear "more Asian." Cho recalls receiving a phone call after the show's premiere from an enraged Quentin Tarantino, her then-boyfriend, who screamed at her, "They took your voice!" The capper was when her show was cancelled to make room for The Drew Carey Show ("Because he's so thin," Cho asides). Drink, drugs, and promiscuous sex followed, until Cho gave herself a wake-up call. "I'm not going to die because I failed as someone else," she proclaims. "I'm going to succeed as myself." This is the one Cho's legion of devoted fans want. More sensitive viewers are advised to fast-forward through the raunchier bits. --Donald Liebenson

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Touching........2007-05-06

One learns a lot about Cho from this DVD. While maintaining hilarity, Cho tells the story of her time as a child star, and her battle with weight disorders.

Very great, and a definite purchase for a Cho fan.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty funny, but a little too much info at times..........2007-04-16

I like this film quite a bit. Normally, I don't get into standup comedy films, but I like Margaret Cho for the most part. She is usually very funny, and her audience is really having a good time here. Some of my favorite parts are where she impersonates her mother and that ABC hired an "Asian consultant" for her horrible sitcom. The mother bit is hilarious, and the ABC bit is hilarious as well as outrageous (maybe the folks at ABC didn't realise that Korea is considered part of Asia). I did object to when Margaret talks about how she became a drunk, drugged out tramp after the sitcom was cancelled. The term she used was she gave a lot of unnecessary h**d. I understand that she needs to vent, but I don't really like to hear too much about the sordid details of her private life, and I doubt that her current husband cared for it that much either (guys do not like to hear their current squeeze's past, no matter how "open minded" they are). I'm glad she's cleaned up, and I hope she stays that way. She doesn't really go into too much political stuff here, which is good. Too often Margaret's poiltical rantings become shrill and humourless, like a lot of political rantings tend to do. But here she stays clear of that, which makes this one of the better comedy concert films.

5 out of 5 stars Stick It In!, My Name is Gwen and I'm Here to ...Get a Driver's License........2007-03-07

Love, love, love, love, love Margaret Cho's I'm the One That I Want (and really all of her stand up films). It could be because she makes me want to laugh so hard that my body simply cannot facilitate the amount of laughter desperate to escape and I find myself on the verge of convulsions. Or it could be because she is one of the best social commentators of all time. It could be because she is so beautiful in every way and that she's an uninhibited, intelligent individual of a woman...or because she is aware--aware that all of us (at least us everyday freaky, yet normal, folks) desperately need to know that we're not alone in this world that seems so full of self-righteousness. That we don't need to feel so ashamed of our actions, our bodies, our minds. She frees us from that in telling us, hysterically, her own stories of how easy it can be to lose oneself in the quest for acceptance. One of the most profound moments in the film is her heartbreaking story about being signed on for a sitcom based on her own life that wound up forcing her to become someone she wasn't at all, which ultimately compromised her strong voice in the process. Well, her voice ain't lost now! In this film, she is back and she is stronger than ever. (and that strength continues to be reflected in Notorious, Revolution and Assassin...oh, and on her Web site and various other projects). You Go, Girl!

5 out of 5 stars You Gotta Meet Gwen.......2006-12-29

I'm not exaggerating. This is a 5 star comedy show. My friend showed this to me and I laughed my butt off. Margaret Cho is fun-nee. The stories she tells are amazing. My favorite is definitely "The Gwen Story". My friend and I still talk that one up. And of course what would a Cho show be without impersonations of her mother. This is a genuine riot. If you haven't seen it yet, repent and see it now.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny and not for the kiddies!.......2006-07-28

I laughed so hard I had tears come down my face. That woman is so funny! I love when she does her mother. And this one part where she is in the hospital and the nurse's aide comes to her bed and growls loudly "I'M GWENDOLYN, AND I'M HERE TO WASH YOUR V****A!" What a hoot! Her parents were in the audience for the first time. I wish the camera panned over to them so I could see the expressions on their faces!
