There's A Mighty Wind a-blowin', along with the gales of laughter you'll get from Christopher Guest's third exercise in brilliant "mockumentary." After tackling small-town theatricals in Waiting for Guffman and obsessive dog-show contestants in Best in Show, Guest and his reliable stable of repertory players (including Fred Willard, Parker Posey, and Bob Balaban) apply their improvisational genius to a latter-day reunion of fictional '60s-era folk singers, a comedic goldmine that Guest first explored 30 years earlier on The National Lampoon Radio Hour. Collaborating with costar and cowriter Eugene Levy (who gives the film's funniest performance), Guest is so delicate in his satirical approach that the laughs aren't always obvious, and the subtlety can be as wistful (as in Catherine O'Hara's performance as Levy's auto-harpist partner) as it is hilarious. Some may wish for more blatant comedy, but that would compromise the genuine affection that Guest & Co. have for the music they're spoofing. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars More pseudo-documentary than comedy, or more accurately, a mockumentary sans the mock........2007-06-05

You can count me in with the people who really liked this one, especially because it deviates from Christopher Guest's old formula. The way "Waiting for Guffman" skewered the pretensions of the residents of Blaine, and the way "Best in Show" skewered its dog owning protagonists certainly had a bit of poison in it. In this film, the audience can empathize at some of the characters while laughing at them, Mitch and Mickey being the best examples. I wanted to see more of them in this film. Now, I know that Guest has a burden in trying to squeeze in the Parker Poseys and crew, point taken. However, this film was about 80 minutes long. Mr. Guest, you are going to have to explain to me, why we see so little of our favorites in this film? This film could have easily incorporated another 30 minutes of running time. I feel this film might have taken a hit in the editing room and perhaps the DVD of it will alter my perception of how good it was. I think it's a big risk for Guest to take in a satire, and for the most part, it pays off.

I am not going to say that this film is bad or even disappointing; however, it was a departure. I missed the craziness of the other two films. This film is more of a serious attempt at the "mockumentary." In fact, we might want to remove the "mock" from it all together. The story centers on a folk festival being planned as a memorial for a great folk producer that has passed away. Of course, all but one of the three original bands being asked to perform has been split up for sometime. It is interesting watching them as they attempt to bring back a musical art form that has been dead a great while.

A couple of side notes: One aspect of this film that I loved was its realism, something missing from Hollywood these days. The Folks men dressed like ex-hippie Baby Boomers, right down to the Birkenstocks, and Fred Willard's office had all of the little knick-knacks that one sees in the offices of smarmy people like him. I think these little details make it easier for the audience to get into the film despite its obvious artifice.

This film will draw on the heart strings, where as the other two really were more interested in laughs. That is not to say that the first two Guest films did not have emotion, they did. It just seems this one has a little more. However, in the end, I feel this movie did pale in comparison to the other two. You can tell a good story and still be hysterically funny. Guest seemed to forget that here and decided to concentrate more on just one.

5 out of 5 stars On Target Parody.......2007-02-27

A Mighty Wind is an on taget parody of folk music types. During the 1960's, folk music was a big fad. Now, outside of both NPR & PBS, folk music has pretty much disappeared from the popular music scene. Folk music has become relegated to only a pitiful remnant.

Part of the reason for this decline is the pecular demographics. Folk music is largely sung by Midwesterners, but its most loyal following is among Jews. Many of the best lines and scenes in A Mighty Wind zero in on this strange fact.

There are other funny matters addressed in A Mighty Wind such as the line, "the costumes are retro now, but they weren't retro then. They were nowtro."

A Mighty Wind is a great parody documentary aka mockumentary.

5 out of 5 stars A Mighty Wind.......2007-02-19

If you lived through the 60's and 70's as an adult, you will find this DVD very funny since it is a parody of the music at that time, and the actors give such convincing performances that there is a laugh a minute.

5 out of 5 stars More Christopher Guest Genius.......2007-01-25

Many of the actors from Christopher Guest's previous movies return for this mockumentary about folk singers/bands. As genius as the movie is, it's also fun to see the actors in new, contrasting roles from "Best in Show" (probably Guest's most mainstream movie).

Parker Posey, who was the freak-out Starbucks-loving He-needs-his-buzy-bee dog owner in "Best in Show" is now the sweet, innocent, way-too-happy Sissy Knox, a member of the New Main Street Singers.

Guest, himself, who was the nut-naming, backwoods, homey Harlan Pepper in "Best in Show" is now the upright bass-playing, super-deep-voice Harry Shearer, a member of The Folksmen.

And the list goes on and on and on.

As all the folk bands come together to perform in a reunion concert after the death of Irving Steinbloom, a folk music producer icon, the characters take shape and create the same brilliant comedy that Guest created with "Best in Show" and "Waiting for Guffman." But even as comedy reigns supreme, the singing scene with Mitch & Mickey, played by Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara, will get even the most hard-hearted person choked up.

A movie worth seeing and a DVD worth adding to any person's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Pitch Perfect.......2006-12-20

The characters in this movie are all the people I grew up with and watched on PBS. Guest and Co. brilliantly but gently parody the sweetness and earnestness of their subjects. The songs - written by Michael McKean and his wife - are silly but sometimes truly wonderful; they're made more impressive by the fact that all of the performers sing and play their instruments live. Everyone is great in this film - Guest sending up Peter Yarrow from Peter Paul & Mary is a hoot - but Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara are a revelation as Mitch and Mickey. The scene where he wanders in with a single red rose for her floors me every time.

4 out of 5 stars Biiiiiirrrrrrrrdddddddmmmmmmaaaaannnnnn!!!!!.......2007-09-01

Alex Toth was one of the most influential comic book artists in the business. He started out working on JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA superheroes back in the 1940s, and never completely stayed away from that field.

In the 1960s, he was hired by Hanna-Barbera Studios - the animation kings of Saturday morning cartoons at the time - to work on cartoon television shows and create characters and strips. While there, he created BIRDMAN AND THE GALAXY TRIO, SPACE GHOST, SUPERFRIENDS, and THE HERCULOIDS.

In the 1960s, cartoons took huge budget cuts. Hanna-Barbera Studios struggled to find ways to meet the budget restrictions and still deliver exciting, fun-filled cartoons for the Saturday morning crowd. One of the ways they did this was to have similar scenes throughout a series. For example, a hero always went into action the same way, that way the establishing shot could be used over and over again.

There were also several "talking head" shots that allowed writers to establish plot and character through dialogue (which was still done quite cheaply compared to the animation) instead of action. Most kids at the time didn't really notice the changes, but if you compare the cartoons of this time period with the ones Max Fleischer and others did back in the 1930s, you'll see huge differences.

Birdman was a superhero who lived inside a cave and waited for calls to action from his contact, Falcon 7 (a one-eyed man that reminded me a lot of Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.). Birdman had wings that allowed him to fly. His powers were solar-based, which requires him to frequently flights where the sun several times during nearly every episode. He fired solar blasts and could create solar shields to protect himself.

He was accompanied on his missions by a large eagle he called Avenger. Later, he created his own sidekick (something that most Supriano strips had back in those days - young teammates were all the rage because Adam West had Burt Ward). Birdman's sidekick was a boy he rescued from a shipwreck. He called him Birdboy, which - although not terribly invented - got the point across. Birdboy had essentially the same powers, but his wings were metal not feathers.

Most of the missions that Birdman undertook involved threats from aliens and highly organized criminals with superweapons.

Usually in a half-hour show, there were three short cartoons. Two of them were Birdman episodes that book-ended a GALAXY TRIO episode.

The Galaxy Trio was a three-man team from an intergalactic law enforcement agency. Actually, the team consisted of two men and one woman. They were Vapor Man (who could turn his body into vapor), Meteor Man (who could change the size of any part of his body and become super-strong), and Gravity Girl (who could change the gravity in an area were on a person).

They usually targeted powerful criminals or criminal organizations on different planets of the space sector they patrolled.

All the Birdman and Galaxy Trio episodes are gathered here in this DVD. When I first heard that this was going to happen, I was excited. I grew up on these cartoons. I can remember wanting to be Birdman and Meteor Man. Sadly, the cartoons don't stand up to my memories and my nine year old son was not impressed. He can watch an anime for hours, but he was giving up quickly on Birdman.

He actually prefers the new HARVEY BIRDMAN, ATTORNEY AT LAW episodes that still air on Adult Swim. In his new reincarnation, Birdman has retired from the superhero business and become a lawyer. The episodes often feature other cartoon characters in suggestive plotlines that lampoons them as well as the naive nature of the series back when they first aired.

Although the cartoons won't occupy the middle grade kids, they're still good enough to hypnotize the younger ones. I mean, after all this is a hero who has wings and can shoot beams. Not only that, but Birdman has his distinctive cry several times in one episode: "Biiiiirrrrrddddddmmmmmaaaaannnnnnnn!"

1 out of 5 stars OH PLEASE............2007-08-09

I hated this series, Birdman was nothing more then a recycled Space Ghost, as for the Galaxy Trio, they look like a reject 1960's rock band that smoked weed.

5 out of 5 stars 1967........THE SUMMER OF LOVE.....THE BEATLES.....OH!! AND BY THE WAY, BIRDMAN AND THE GALAXY TRIO.....................2007-08-09

1967 was a year of love, the Vietnam War and super rock groups and of course Birdman and the Galaxy Trio. Negatives, the packaging is cheaply done, all I can say is when you take out each dvd, use lens paper, as to not get fingerprints on the two dvds. I felt W.B. could have gave the consumers of this product, better packaging. There could have been remastering of all the episodes, you could still see artifacts while watching these two dvds. Maybe it was better W.B. left the original prints the way they originally are. I know Spiderman 1967 5 dvd 52 episode set has 48 episodes remastered and some look like they were made a day ago, only 4 episodes of Spiderman have not been remastered in the 1967 set. The positives of Birdman and the Galaxy Trio: The Complete Series, it is nice to have all the episodes of each series, there is also a really interesting documentary "Birdman The Forgotten Hero". This documentary explains the origins of Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, and how Hanna--Barbera had some amazing artist in thier studio during their twenty year or more, dominance of saturday mornings. I enjoy watching these cartoons, and as silly as they sometimes are I still enjoy it. The soundtrack for these cartoons may repeat itself on many Habba Barbera cartoons of this era, but I feel Joseph Barbera was a really good musician. Enjoy Birdman and the Galaxy Trio: The Complete Series for what it is good clean and at times silly fun. I'm not into superheroes but man, I cant wait till Warner Brothers releases the "Fantastic Four 1967" . Despite "Birdman and the Galaxy Trio: The Complete Series" negatives, I consider it a welcome release from W.B..............

3 out of 5 stars PREPARE FOR CRASH LANDING !!.......2007-07-25

I bought this set purely for nostalgia and I'm glad I did,but it appears that little effort went into restoring these episodes for this dvd release. The video transfer suffers from all sort's of age related debris, scratches, speckling and is nowhere near the quality of some of the other Hanna Barbera releases. As for the overall packaging and condition of the disc's,some fans will be definitely disappointed. The packaging is absolutely cheap and the quality of the disc's is just plain terrible. In this set,you get a very cheap cardboard package and two double sided disc's that sit on top of one another. The disc's are very hard to remove from the package and chances are they'll get scratched.I pre-ordered this set from Amazon.ca and when I received it the disc's were already full of fingerprints and scratches.I contacted Amazon.ca customer service immediately and they offered a replacement set without question and issued an apology. When the second set arrived it was riddled with deep scratches, more fingerprints and some kind of residue on the disc's.It's evident from this release that the company doing the dvd replicating for Warner has some serious quality control problems and they need to be addressed immediately. As for Amazon.ca,they resolved my problem to my satisfaction with a level of service I've come to expect.I wish I could say the same for Warner Studios. As for an apology,Warner should apologize to all the fans and to the people at Hanna Barbera for the way they handled this release.

5 out of 5 stars Pavarotti...need one say more.......2006-11-04

One is incapable of finding words to describe the majesty and power of Pavarotti, Carreres and Domingo. BRAVO!

4 out of 5 stars sound awful.......2005-10-13

Beautiful images of Paris. Beautiful program, but the sound is awful. Probably the tunel like stage in which the wind go through and the Champ de Mars to wide. Pavarotti does not seem at ease at all, for an hour. He is a sound fanatic as we know. His interpretation of Granada is a flop. Worth the buy?...Yes. You will have to ajust your sound system. Refer to CD edition for titles of the songs.

4 out of 5 stars Three Tenors in Paris - .......2004-11-13

This is a nice concert with some beautiful songs. I especially love Pavarotti's "Caruso" which he sings better than any other person who attempted to sing this song. (Bocelli really botches it up badly.) Domingo and Pavarotti show some wear and tear since their 1994 concert, but they are still all terrific. Time moves on, and we shouldn't criticize such talent. Although, Pavarotti looks ridiculous in his black hair and painted eyebrows. He needs a makeover. Carreras seems to be in good health abd good form again and probably did the best in this concert. A must have for Three Tenor fans! I did enjoy watching this performance.

2 out of 5 stars Good sound, but the edition bothers me.......2004-06-13

The voices are OK, but there's no feeling like in the previous concerts, and i don't feel completely satistied after each viewing. The medleys are the best, and the production below the Eiffel Tower looks awesome.
My problem after seeing this was the edition. The opening is so cold and unatractive, and everything goes so fast, that i lose the attention, altough the arias are interesting...

Good concert, but looks unatractive.

4 out of 5 stars Great but Sad.......2003-03-20

Even after hearing this concert, and enjoying it, I still think it was a mistake. It is almost tear-jerking to see these tenors progress from the top of their voices to the wobbly twilights of their careers. Despite the enjoyable atmosphere of this concert, none of the tenors are in very good form. it is hard to compare to the origonal concert.
Its very hard to judge Domingo. He is the only one of the three who has not dyed his hair which makes him look very old. He looked as if he has aged 20 years from the last concert! His voice didn't reflect this totally but there was some tiredness to his voice. The most Urksome thing about his performance were his facial expressions and gestures. I know domingo's voice is still healthy but his faces on high notes look like he is being put through torture. His Amor Ti Vieta, sounds okay but when he hits his highnote on the work "Amor" which means love, it looks as if he were goig through immence pain. its hard to believe his performances when he was so old and tired looking. This wasn't true at the christmas concert the next year, so it must have been a momentary lapse.
Carreras does not even resemble the tenor he once was, or even a tenor at all. He is wobbing high and low now and singing at one very loud volume. His whole face shakes as he sings and on the rare high notes during medleys he clamps down on a hard E vowel which can only be descibed in this review as: aieeeeeeeee. He makes up for his disintigrating voice by gesturing like he was in a silent movie. His solo's all resemble baritone art-songs rather then Arias for tenor. i think that by this concert his voice was past its use by date. It almost brings a tear to the eye to listen to because at 52 he should still be singing in full, dark, spendor. I would refer anybody to his earlier material compiled in his Cd, The Golden Years. Carreras is not even a shadow of his former self in this concert. Like i said it is enjoyable to see my favorite tenor giving his whole heart to the audience, but sad to see that his voice is no longer what it was.
pav is in okay voice. For a sextagenarian he is an amazing talent. He is the only one who sings a Old School style Three tennors concert, diving into some tough material with his accusomed vigor. his voice is not what it was 4 years ago, but it is still top notch. Singing Nessun dorma as well as he does well into his Sixties is the highlight, while a sub-par Granada is a a low-light. A feature of note is that he sings the only high c in three tenors history in the first song of the finale medley. (Nessun dorma, despite often being billed as a high C, ends with a B resolving to an A.)
The medley is fun and exciting, despite being nowhere near the quality of the prevoius concerts.
The Encores are great, despite the last high note in La Donna E Mobllie where Domingo and Carreras make two of the most painful faces in Tenordom hitting a Bflat.

Overall this is a must have for Three Tenors fans, like myself. But if your looking for a definitive rundown of what the tenors are all about, go with one of the previous outings.

Pierce Brosnan gives one of his finest performances in The Matador, a low-key buddy comedy with an agreeably sinister twist. Light-years from his former James Bond image, Brosnan is unshaven, unnerved and unpredictable as freelance assassin Julian Noble, who encounters desperate businessman Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) in the bar of a modern Mexico City hotel. Danny is intrigued when Julian reveals that he's a "facilitator of fatalities," and his wife "Bean" (Hope Davis) is equally fascinated when Julian shows up unexpectedly, six months later, at Danny's home in Denver. Having lost his touch as a reliable hit-man, Julian needs Danny's help with "one last job," but the logistics of Julian's lethal profession (involving an employer played by Philip Baker Hall) are secondary to writer-director Richard Shepard's offbeat, slightly uneven character study, which gives Kinnear and Brosnan a memorable opportunity to riff on their established screen personas. In making Julian a likable yet tormented drifter who's made a habit of "running from any emotion," Brosnan creates an edgy yet sympathetic character as mysterious as he is fun to be around; if you're going to befriend a hired killer, you could do far worse than a guy like Julian. As Brosnan plays him, he's worthy of a sequel, but The Matador is the kind of entertainingly quirky movie that's a hard act to follow. --Jeff Shannon

Description

This hip and hilarious dark comedy finds boorish, on-the-job hit man Julian Noble (Pierce Brosnan) in a Mexico City cantina where he meets mild-mannered Denver businessman Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear), both of whom are at a crossroads in their lives and careers. Over too many margaritas, they form a strange friendship built on the dark and drunken honesty shared among strangers who believe they will never see each other in the light of day. However, months later, back in Denver, the doorbell rings at the Wright residence, and Danny and his wife Bean (Hope Davis) find Julian on their doorstep, a desperate, broken man. What else can they do, but to take him in?

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Sloppy Kill.......2007-09-02

The only real reason to see this is to enjoy Pierce Brosnan cast against type as a burned out hit man with fainting spells a la Tony Soprano. Brosnan is very funny in the role, but the plot is a shaky affair and the straight man character played by Greg Kinnear is hardly believable. This film would have worked better as a black comedy; for some reason it also tries to be tale of redemption. Doesn't really work, but has its amusing moments.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty offbeat and funny.......2007-08-11

I really liked this film and didn't expect too much when I purchased it. I like Peirce Brosnan and enjoyed this role more than even his Bond roles. Just such a bizarre character that you can't help but like him. The Anti-James Bond, but yet still somehow cool. Won't give the rest away, but a nice offbeat surprise. Probably not for everyone, but I liked it.

3 out of 5 stars The faciliator of fatalities..........2007-08-10

Pierce Brosnan does have an acting life outside of "James Bond". Without his and Greg Kinnear's acting, the film would have died. Pierce plays a lonely hit man kind of looking for a best friend. He meets Kinnear in a bar in Mexico while both are there on business and they begin a friendship. Pierce relates to Kinnear that he is a hit man. The two then went their own separate ways. Pierce shows up on Kinnear's doorstep 6 years later, only to take him on an incredible journey of helping him make the most critical kill of his life. Given the plot, I was looking for more of a thriller/suspense but I didn't get it. It was moving at times, but it dragged on in many scenes. It is worth watching as the two actors make the whole movie worthwhile, but don't look for the "James Bond" type of suspence and thrill, you won't get it...

4 out of 5 stars This is what happens after the life of Bond.......2007-07-02

I see that it's tough for actors who play cultural icons to get work once they end that phase of their careers. George Reeves committed suicide after failing to find work after his 50's portrayal of Superman on TV. Adam West never got a good role after the campy '60's "Batman." Even Sean Connery had a period of obscurity after his James Bond period. This brings us to Pierce Brosnan, another James Bond: movie-star handsome, perfect in the role of the urbane, suave, and emotionally distant Agent 007. Brosnan tried to move beyond this typecasting with "The Tailor of Panama," but didn't quite succeed. Going to a more extreme character in "The Matador," Brosnan proves he might have a career ahead of him. He's going to need more plausible scripts, though, because none of the key plot points in "The Matador" are credible.

I still don't know why they call it a thriller when there wasn't any tension or suspense in here. You kind of knew what was coming except, perhaps, in several instances and there wasn't much tension or suspense in those instances. One of the good aspects of this film was the decision for Brosnan to roughen up his looks. His scraggly beard, bad hair, yellowed teeth, and the wild edge in his smile make him a credible, burnt-out, hit man. Additionally, he takes to his role with gusto. His fear as he begins to have nervous breakdowns, his desperate attempts to booze and whore his way back to sanity, and his life-saving grab to make a friend out of mild-mannered, middle-class Danny, are believably pathetic. I felt twinges of sympathy for this killer going over the edge. Their initial and unlikely acquaintance is believable only because it's in Mexico. The relationship between these two males is under constantly episodic humorous tension throughout the movie which is a plus in this film. Hope Davis also turns in a fine minor performance as Kinnear's character's wife.

The script was pretty good, the bright colors and bold cinematography and banners are reminiscent, in a good way, of Quentin Tarantino at his best. To some extent, the scenic and cinematographic movement is what gives the movie a strong sense of action as much as character movement. The plot almost feels as if it has a life independent of the characters; as if the characters are acting out a minor sequence in a bigger sweep of `Story,' which almost seems like a `Character' in itself. Sound weird? Well, I guess it is, in a way. But it sure seems to work for me. Still, it's a good buddy-flick that's worth your time but try to leave Bond out of your mind before you watch this.

4 out of 5 stars This Could Have Been Bonds Future.......2007-06-14

When I saw the preview for this movie I just had to see it. I don't know why but it just looked funny and entertaining. Maybe it was seeing Brosnan acting like a complete nut in every scene. The movie is about a bored and lonely assassin Julian Noble (Brosnan) who ends up stalking a traveling salesman named Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear). The thing is that Julian met Danny at a bar in Mexico and likes his personality so now he wants to be friends. Julian has bigger problems though like he can't finish his jobs because he freezes up every time he tries to pull the trigger.

Because of this his boss has put out a hit on him so Julian leaves Mexico and shows up on Danny's front door step. What makes matters worse is not only is Julian having a mid life crisis but he has terrible manners and has a problem drinking too much. Danny has to put up with his craziness while trying to spend time with his wife on christmas. Julian finally tells Danny why he really came to his home and tells him he needs his help to complete with his last job. The two set out on a very exciting and funny journey to rescue Julian from death and send him to a relaxing paradise to retire in.

What I like most about The Matador is the comedy that couldn't have been accomplished without Brosnans hysterical but fitting look. He played Julian on point and really got the comedic depressing feeling of his character. The story has a pretty good twist to it but nothing too surprising. You might even guess the end before it gets there as it bites off some other more serious assassin films. The cast did a good job but for some reason you could feel something missing. One more character equally as crazy as Julian Noble or even crazier maybe could have gave the movie that extra something. It has great picture and sound quality, definitely no problems there. Basically The Matador didn't really have flaws but it was just a 4 star performance. From the story to the comedy it was 4 stars, as funny as it is it isn't 5 star bust out crying laughing. If you have time go get it or maybe it's still on TV but this will most likely be enjoyed.

Okay, I know a lot of people haven't committed to Blu-Ray or HD yet, but I did for DVD's like this one. My wife was captivated by the crystal clarity of audio and video. She is a fan and really enjoyed the show, singing along with the video. Seeing it in full HD is almost like being there. Beyonce's performance was as expected, flawless and crowd inspired. What better place to perform than before hundreds of Hot-Lanta screaming fans? The stage performances given by Destiny's Child (and her guests like T.I. and Lil Wayne) is well worth twice the cost of the disc... so this is a deal. If possible, I would highly recommend viewing this concert in HD.

This was such a great deal for the price...13.99 when I bought it. The music is great and the HD video quality is extremely good. This is something I will watch over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasurable Time.......2007-09-10

Having seen a stage performance of this presentation I was delighted to have the opportunity to get the DVD. Everyone has gotten older and looks a bit different from the golden days of the 60's but they still know how to sing and how to bring back the good feelings of those days. Well worth the purchase price to anyone who enjoyed hootenanny and the real days of folk songs.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate folk music concert.......2007-08-01

This was one of the American Soundtrack series concerts originally aired on PBS in 2002, and includes all the great names of early folk music. Although the sound is not perfect, it is still highly acceptable, and this nearly two hour concert features a cornucopia of American folk music from the fifties and sixties. I personally enjoy this concert and others in the series not only for the music, but also to actually see what some of these people look like, since much of this type of music went out of general circulation before I was born. If you enjoy folk music, I highly recommend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Hootenanny Heaven.......2007-07-20

I finally struck gold. After being disappointed with individual concert DVD's this one is a home run. The stars of the early 60's while long in the tooth brought me back to my college days with the Kingston Trio, The Highwaymen, Judy Collins and many more.

5 out of 5 stars You Wont Be Disappointed.......2005-09-05

I was a little weary about buying this dvd because of the negative review concerning the sound.
I bought it and let me reassure you the Sound Is Fine and the concert was wonderful. The performers sang the songs with passion and meaning

You wont be disappointed

1 out of 5 stars An Unfortunate Disappointment.......2004-05-18

While the concert itself is exciting, the recording is terrible. The quality of the sound is very amaturish which surprised me. I wish I could have rated it higher but I could not even finish watching the concert because of the poor recording.

Though officially disbanded, Destiny's Child proves in this concert video why they're one of the most successful soul/R&B groups of all time. Filmed at Atlanta's Phillips Arena during their Destiny Fulfilled farewell tour, the trio pulled all the stops--short of flying over the audience--to put on a spectacular show for their fans. Opening the show with their Grammy-winning "Say My Name," the group--who famously sang while running around a track as girls to build their lung strength--belted their harmonies and runs while dancing through a medley of hits including "No, No, No," "Bugaboo," "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Bootylicious" and "Jumpin' Jumpin.'" The concert not only featured their greatest hits, but jammed in singles from their final album, Destiny Fulfilled. The girls sang the slinky "Cater 2 U" while giving lap dances to three lucky male audience members, while "Soldier" (with choreography that emulated Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation") included guest-star rappers T.I. and Lil' Wayne. The group closed with their anthem "Survivor," and the peppy "Lose My Breath" which featured a waterfall onstage that doused the singers.

To prove their mettle as solo artists, each member got their own segment to show off what they've accomplished outside of Destiny's Child. Both Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams have diverse and strong voices well-suited to their genres--soul/R&B and gospel, respectively--but it becomes clear when they're each alone on the stage that they don't have the solo prowess of dominant member Beyoncé Knowles, who tore through her hits "Crazy in Love," "Baby Boy," and "Naughty Girl" with sexy moves and an electric stage presence rarely matched by other soul divas. When she's joined by Rowland and Williams, Knowles melds back into Destiny's Child as an equal member, but it's clear this star's best days are still ahead of her. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Just like being there.......2007-05-23

I actually saw the live concert in Sunrise, FL and it was just like being there and more. There was some extras added but it is a fabulous video.

5 out of 5 stars was a great show in houston.... even better on DVD..........2007-04-16

This concert is probably one of the best concerts i have ever been too.... it had everything... hot dancers, great music, hype crowd, and one of the greatest female groups of all time...

i thought they should have filmed this concert in houston... but it was great that the filmed it in a great city with great response....

im always lookin forward into how they perform my favourite song by the ladies 'survivor'.... honestly this is probably the best performance in the entire concert to me.... the salsa dancing, the dance break, kelly's dance intro... all that good stuff... and as a special bonus, monica shows up at the end of the song with flowers....

michelle handled her business during her set.... she even surprised me by the way she was sangin'......
another performance that i loved was the 'solider' performance... in houston mike jones & slim thug came out and did his thang!!! but on here... the original rapppers on the track came out and handled it... when T.I. and Lil' wayne came out in total suprise...

everything from the beginning from the show to the very teasin' shower from the girls i loved every single min of it....

i recommend this concer to everyone and anyone who did not see this performance....

4 out of 5 stars Very good buy..........2007-01-06

Overall I thought the DVD was a good buy. If you are a big fan of Destiny's Child you will love it. This DVD showed that the treo of ladies are definitely talented. The DVD is full of great group and individual performances. The only thing I didn't like about the DVD was that fact that sometimes the singing was slightly off from the lip movement of the ladies. This turned out to be the only reason why I didn't give it five stars. So I encourage those interested in Destiny's Child to purchase the DVD. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Beyonce emerges as the clear superstar of this DVD, and genre.......2006-12-24

After watching it 5 times now in 4 days, I can honestly say that Beyonce has emerged not on ly as a star of her time, but as a star of all times. I would put her right up there with Aretha, Patty, and Tina Marie. Her contemporaries, Badu, Ciera, Keys, I am afraid, become Pippen-to-Jordan like in their shortcomings. The girl -- correct that -- fully grown and fine woman is a Diva. This DVD confirms it.

I know, I know, everyone wants to reserve judgement, and judge a body of work before proclaiming a neophyte a Diva. Tune into Dangerously in love on this DVD, and then tell me she is not ready for the baton. Tina, and Aretha in their prime could have matched the rendition, maybe, and Patty may be able to pull it off today. But, they never could have pulled it off looking as good as Beyonce. And don't tell me looks don't matter...this is entertainment, and her looks are supremely entertaining.

Oh yeah, the other two. Kelly, and Michelle were good. Singing gospel, Michelle, was clearly in her element. She will not make a dime as a table dancer though, poor guy, gets pulled up on stage to sit next to the guy getting "catered" by Beyonce...so close, but yet so far. If Kelly asks the audience to help her one more time during her solo, I am going to peremenently edit her out of my DVD. Michelle should get more mic time, but since Kelly is an original DC I guess loyalty wins out...not on my remote though...can we say fast forward.

As far as singers/entertainers, unless Stevie reterns to form some time soon, or the spirit of Hathaway, Gaye, Ripperton, Redding, or Lady Day enhabits another human in the near future, Beyonce is it. High praise I know, but who else is dancing through an entire show, and singing (on key)? I submit her performance in Bootylicious to cap off my thesis.

I welcome solid debate, but come correct. I will.

5 out of 5 stars THEY KNOW HOW TO PUT ON A SHOW.......2006-12-23

They are what I call good performers. I saw them in concert as in Miami and they know how to work a crowd as well as the stage. They are what other groups should be afraid of. They were on stage for over an hour and you couldnt even tell because they have stamina for hours. They danced, and sung all at the same time. They really transform themselves while they are on stage. Beyonce, Michelle, and Kelly it down. Literally

For a crystal-clear lesson in how an unknown vaults into immediate stardom, look no further than Romance on the High Seas, the silly 1948 musical that launched the movie career of Doris Day. A band singer, Day was plucked from the ranks when Warner Bros. and director Michael Curtiz needed to find a replacement for a role intended first for Judy Garland and then for Betty Hutton. She's fourth-billed, but there's no question Doris Day owns the picture; in retrospect, the part seems tailor-made to break a new star. The plot is a howler: society wife Janis Paige is suspicious when husband Don DeFore (hubby to TV's Hazel) claims he must stay in New York on business instead of going on a cruise to South America. So Paige gives the cruise ticket to lounge singer Doris, on the condition that she pretend to be Paige, while wifey hangs back in New York. Make sense? Meanwhile, a suspicious DeFore hires a detective (Jack Carson) to spy on his wife during the cruise, except of course it isn't really his wife, it's... well, you get the picture. Day is somewhat sassier than her later well-scrubbed image would allow; she actually seems like an up-from-the-streets, well-traveled barnstormer. The saucy script has a handsome pedigree; it was penned by Casablanca boys Julius and Philip Epstein and polished by future Billy Wilder partner I.A.L. Diamond. However, it must be stated that Curtiz is nobody's idea of a buoyant comedy director, even if the lounge-singing sequences are sharply made. The cast is stocked with screwball stalwarts such as S.Z. Sakall, Eric Blore, and Franklin Pangborn. As Day's accompanist and suitor, the celebrated musican-wit Oscar Levant has one of his better screen roles--and his experience here was likely the source of his later quip, "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin." If you see her cheeky performance here, you might agree with him. --Robert Horton

Description

Elvira is supposed to go on a cruise, but decides to stay home when she suspects her husband is cheating on her. Her husband suspects the same of his wife, and sends an investigator to spy on her on the cruise - but he is really spying on Elvira's husband.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S A GREAT DAY.......2007-05-15

At last Doris Days first film is released on DVD
It is a first class quality print with Doris radiating all she stands for from the screen from her very first appearance & the extras are great too

4 out of 5 stars a star is born.......2005-05-07

Doris Day sparkles in this film, which was her film debut; it's a predictable, silly but fun plot of a couple who suspect each other of cheating, and devise ways of spying, only to be confused by wrong identities and of course, love.
The cast surrounding Doris is terrific, with Janis Page and Don DeFore as the couple, Jack Carson as Peter Vigil, the private investigator in love with Doris, Oscar Levant as a down and out pianist also in love with Doris, S.Z. Sakell as Uncle Lazlo who meddles in everything, and Leslie Brooks as the stunning secretary that raises Janis Paige's suspicions.

This 1948 film is peppered with lovely Jule Styne/Sammy Cahn songs, including the Oscar nominated "It's Magic". Others are "I'm in Love", "It's You or No One", "The Tourist Trade" (sung by Avon Long), "Put 'Em in a Box, Tie 'Em with a Ribbon, and Throw 'Em in the Deep Blue Sea", "Two Lovers Met in the Night", "Run, Run, Run" (sung by Jack Carson), and Oscar Levant plays his "Caribbean Rhapsody".
Directed with swift pacing by Michael Curtiz, the dance numbers are choreographed by Busby Berkeley, The Page Cavanaugh Trio back Doris in some numbers, and the Technicolor cinematography and fabulous fashions are great to look at.

The circumstances of Doris Day being hired for this film read like a Cinderella story. Jule Styne heard her sing at a party while he was looking for a replacement for Betty Hutton, who had to back out of the film due to pregnancy, and urged Michael Curtiz to hire her. Doris was 23 at the time, and as a singer had a hit with "Sentimental Journey", but according to biographies was in the process of a second divorce, at a low point in her life, and ready to "quit show business" when this opportunity came her way...and a star was born.
Total running time is 99 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars What A Magical Film.......2004-07-11

I love Doris Day Movies and I own all 39/39 of her movies but I have to say that this is my favorite one. Doris was so magical in this role as Miss Georgia Kent and Who can forget Jack Carsons fantastic Role as the Detective. Elvira Kent (Janis Page) thinks that Her Husband is being unfaithful and her husband thinks the same about her. So they both make the other one think they are going on their honeymoon so they each send a spy but they don't know that the other one didn't go. Well Georgia uses the name of Elvira Kent and The Detective thinks she is Elivra Kent and they go on a merry little chase. This movie was Doris's Film Debut and she sings my personal favorite song in this movie It's Magic. And who can forget the catchy tune the Tourist Trade. What a beautiful movie. This is a great movie for the whole family to enjoy.

A Dixie Chicks in-the-round stadium concert is a visually bold and captivating enterprise, one quickly discovers watching Top of the World Tour. An unusual record of the rousing band's 2003 sweep through giant North American venues, Top of the World freely mixes and matches images culled from multiple shows, demonstrating how Natalie Maines, Emily Robison, and Martie Maguire electrify cavernous spaces as surely as they do smaller ones. Still, size doesn't matter where the Chicks' full-bodied, engaging bluegrass, anthemic country pop, and flat-out rock is concerned. "Longtime Gone" and "Tortured, Tangled Hearts" sound like the polished but authentic roots music one expects from the Chicks. "If I Fall You're Going Down with Me" is a flavorful rocker, while the feminist anthem "Wide Open Spaces" still gets women hopping in the aisles. In a quieter vein, the moody, powerful "Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)" hushes the masses like nothing else. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars I can't believe I watched the whole thing...and enjoyed it all!.......2007-08-18

Since I'm just a moderate fan of the Chicks, I only rented this, and their previous PBS concert ("An Evening With..."), to see them sing "Goodbye Earl" and "Wide Open Spaces". These were the only two songs I knew by name, before I watched the Dvd's.

I started watching the first one, "An Evening With..." (it's in full-screen, with some widescreen shots mixed in), but found it a bit too slow, so I switched to the "Top of the World Tour Live" (which is in widescreen). I was a little confused at first, because I wasn't sure if Natalie's clothing kept changing, or if I was just imagining it? Or maybe, they were just quickly cutting to the other blonde Chick? Anyway, I jumped forward to chapter 4, and when Natalie said, "Well, hello Houston...Cleveland...Boston, etc., I realized what they were doing. Why they didn't start off with chapter 4, first, is beyond me, but I then went back and watched the entire concert! Without the shots of the different clothing and hairstyles, I would have skipped many of the songs.

Yes, some of the edits were too quick, but the quick edits were much less frequent, when the slower, softer songs were sung. I also wish they would have had fewer shots of Natalie wearing black, or sporting her crazy Mohawk hairstyle. To counter this, I just briefly looked elsewhere (on the screen), and waited till the next edit came.

I then watched "An Evening With...", and enjoyed Natalie's humor and sweetness. In addition, I enjoyed seven of the songs, and no longer found it too slow. I liked both concerts equally, but for different reasons.

"Top of the World Tour Live", had more style and flash; while "An Evening With...", had much more charm and humor.

I guess it's true what they say..."The Chicks Rule!"

1 out of 5 stars There's a reason there's so many bad reviews of this DVD..........2007-06-26

and it has nothing to do with politics or country music bashers stopping by to drop a 1 star bomb. Simply put, this thing is horrendously edited.

The decision was made by someone on the production team to shoot several cities (I believe about 12 based on a section where you see Natalie saying "Well, helllllooooo (name of city here)" to various audiences.) on the Top of the World tour and use footage from each. That wouldn't be an issue if they selected, say, the best performance of "Sin Wagon" from the 12 and used it in full. But what they choose to do is slice shots from EACH performance and slap 'em together.

This gives you the equivalent of a 90 minute music video and it is extremely tiring to watch. You're watching Natalie in a black top under a blue spotlight, suddenly the perspective changes and Natalie's now in a Nudie shirt under a yellow spotlight.

BOTTOM LINE:
Everyone complaining about this video is correct. It's not the Chicks' fault, it's bad editing. While I can't vouch for AN EVENING WITH yet (still waiting to get it from NetFlix) I CAN tell you this is a definite waste of hard-earned money. Do NOT buy this.

2 out of 5 stars Dixie Chicks Concert Film.......2007-05-13

First, I am an unabashed, doting fan of the Dixie Chicks--I love their songs, and I love their feisty attitude, their superb musicianship, and of course, their right-on politics and moral courage in the face of hysterical abuse from brainless rednecks...

Nevertheless, this concert film was a bit of a bore. The performances are, as always, superb--just seeing these three dynamic, enthusiastic ladies interact joyfully on stage and get down with their fiddle and banjo is a pleasure in itself. But the editing tricks, whereby various clips of performances of each song are spliced together so that the staging and costumes seem to change with each new line, are quite distracting and irritating. I realize that concert films have a limited range of cinematic possibilities, but I would have preferred that each song be recorded all the way through at a given venue, before switching to another. And I would have liked to see the performances interspersed with a few informal shots of these ladies getting on and off tour buses, interacting with crowds, or simply chilling and chatting in the green room before a performance. Instead, the whole video is just one fragmented performance after another.

If you want a really good Dixie Chicks video, get their documentary, "Shut Up and Sing," not this one (even though "Shut Up and Sing" lacks complete performances of any of their songs). I hope, however, that someone does a video that blends concert performances with narrative--more like the recent Bob Dylan documentary that Scorsese did.

1 out of 5 stars Picture Quality not good.......2007-02-22

I was suprised to find that this dvd is non anomorphic. For those of us with a 16:9 HD TV the PQ when upconverted is lacking. For a fairly new disc not to be "enhanced for 16:9" TVs is a crime.

Cream's 2005 reunion (after a mere 37 years apart) was big news and a very hot ticket. But anyone wondering what the fuss was all about is unlikely to get much enlightenment from Cream - Farewell Concert. The trio's (guitarist Eric Clapton, bass player Jack Bruce, and drummer Ginger Baker) November 1968 gig at London's Royal Albert Hall, the same venue chosen for their reunion, may have been a spectacular display of their instrumental virtuosity and legendary improvisational skills, but you'd never know it from this sub-par document. The sound has been digitally remastered, but the audio is still a turgid sonic sludge. The visuals are even worse, with director Tony Palmer jerking the camera around as if this were an episode of NYPD Blue, layering the picture with dated and distracting psychedelic light effects, and providing far too many close-ups of Bruce's teeth (and almost no wide shots of the entire band). As for the music, well, it's apparent that these boys really could play; surprisingly, Baker's jazz-inflected drum solo is one of the highlights. But their reliance on extended blues jams ("Spoonful," "Sitting on Top of the World," etc.) belies the fact that despite their dismissal of commercial rock music (cf. Bruce's lofty claim in an accompanying interview that "we wouldn't dream" of trying to write a hit single), Cream's four studio albums contain some wonderful pop songs. Farewell Concert includes "Sunshine of Your Love" and "White Room," but for a much more satisfying taste of what they were all about, try the CD or DVD versions of Cream - Royal Albert Hall - London May 2-3-5-6 2005 instead. --Sam Graham

A lot of this was before my time, but I do remember the songs once old enough to enjoy. It's a fun "go back in time" rememberance to the way things were back then. Ginger Baker's drum solo will just blow you away - even today!

4 out of 5 stars It's a horrible necessity for a Cream Fan.......2007-06-15

If you were a kid glued to a TV set in the 60's waiting for Beatles,Stones, etc, after suffering thru TopoGigio on the Ed Sullivan Show you'd have some reward. Everytime you watch a modern concert broadcast/dvd and notice that the camera pans to the bassplayer everytime the guiitar player solo's you have this film to thank. Someone did mention this was not atypical. If you were lucky enough to see Clay Cole Show, Pete Seegar's Rainbow Quest, the above mentioned Ed Sullivan Show and others you were treated to professional camera work. If the guitar player turned his back on the camera as George did no harm no foul. I saw Cream at Hunter College then went into the service in 1968 so I was really psyched to see this film after I survived vietnam and seeing it was really a downer. By then you could also see Roy Buchannan on PBS and there they got it right. As a piece of music history I had to give it a 4 because no one knew who they were when they were together and this is a document no matter how flawed.

5 out of 5 stars The DVD is waiting at the "Crossroads".......2007-06-04

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

When the opportunity presents itself to witness one of the most important nights in musical history (November 26, 68) the last thing we should be concerned about is criticizing video director Tony Palmer's camera angles and choice of shots of the band.

The preservation of history and the performance of Cream should outweigh what you have already been told about the quality. While the audio has improved it is not going to sound like a George Martin production. This isn't to make you think twice about the purchase. It is a must own! Cream will always be one of the finest bands to ever assemble. Call them a Supergroup, a power trio, virtuosos, or any other cool phrase, but the letters spell it perfectly C R E A M.

For two years Eric, Ginger, and Jack commandeered the concert stage. They amazed the masses with the ability to take the three minute blues and rock song and extend it until you were sucked in to a tidal wave of sound not wanting to let go.

Cream's ability didn't start and cease with their domination of the concert halls. They had the songs and the rare ability to make a cover sound like they both wrote it and perfected it.

If the entire DVD only contained "Crossroads" it would be worth every cent. Eric's two solos are the standard that all others are judged against.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

3 out of 5 stars Here's Mud In Your Ear--But So What.......2007-05-14

"Rockumentaries" were still in their infancy when this concert film (cum interviews) was shot, and it's good to keep that fact in mind when viewing the DVD of Cream's FAREWELL CONCERT. As other reviewers have noted, the sound is quite muddy, the camerawork is fairly primitive, and the interviews are only somewhat informative. But it is CREAM after all, and they were the first and (arguably) the best supergroup.

How to deal with the aural sludge? Well, the technique that works best for me was one I devised when still a mere slip of a teenager (OK, OK, I was never much of slip of anything back then--but you know what I mean). Back in the day, whenever I was at a concert with really bad acoustics, I used to home in on the bass. That was my anchor, and then I found that I could then better pay attention to what the other musicians were doing as well. Usually, it worked like a charm. And it certainly helped in watching this old footage from '69 too.

I gather there'll always be some debate as to whether the group was still at the top of their game for this "farewell" concert. Objectively, I'd have to say that the instrumental work here still seems strong. Jack Bruce's vocals--always a secondary concern, of course--sound more strained than they did on some other live recordings, and certainly moreso than they did in the studio.

As others have noted, the DVD is probably more noteworthy as a historic document than as a source of aesthetic pleasure unto itself. That's not to suggest that it is totally devoid of such pleasure, however. You just have to dig a little deeper to truly dig it.

5 out of 5 stars THIS LEGENDARY CONCERT MARKS THE FAREWELL AND END TO ROCK'S GREATEST THREE-MAN BAND EVER........2007-03-06

I would like to do a follow-up and add to my friend Metamorpho's excellent reviews of CREAM'S legendary albums with the spectacular DVD concert entitled "CREAM FAREWELL CONCERT." I will also do another review on the DVD concert entitled "CREAM REUNION CONCERT" from May 2005 at a later date. In my opinion, I feel that this is the only way to end the CREAM series on a good positive note and not the way CREAM tragically ended at the Royal Albert Hall on 26 November 1968. This one's for you Metamorpho and for the MIGHTY CREAM.

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic farewell DVD concert entitled "CREAM FAREWELL CONCERT" by Rock's greatest three-man band ever assembled. I give you one of England's pride and joy's, the one and only, THE MIGHTY C-R-E-A-M. This legendary DVD film edition is a big improvement as far as film and sound quality is concerned. This legendary film saw its premiere and first day of release in 1969. There exists a perfect video version of this concert but has yet to be released. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary DVD concert or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible. And now, without further delay, it is time for me to take you back in time to the "CREAM FAREWELL CONCERT" from 1968.

CREAM will forever be remembered as being Rock's first true supergroup and for being the greatest three-man band in Rock n' Roll history. Their music style would consist of the blend and mixture of Blues and Rock n' Roll but CREAM would forever change how this mixture would be played. Songwriting credits as well as music differences and tastes were now starting to take a toll on the friendships of all three members especially between bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. From what I've read in CREAM'S biographies, Bruce and Baker's fights were legendary and its really a wonder that CREAM actually lasted as long as it did. However, the article that came out in Rolling Stone magazine in 1968 in reference to Eric's guitar playing would hurt Eric Clapton so deeply that it would be the final straw and finally draw the curtains to a close of one of Rock's greatest legendary bands of all-time. So the stage was set, the date, 26 November 1968. The place, The Royal Albert Hall in London, England. The occasion, CREAM'S farewell concert to Rock n' Roll.

The complete concert was filmed but only a certain few songs made this DVD edition. The concert begins with the legendary blistering heavy metal (In diapers) Rocker "Sunshine Of Your Love," the groundbreaking CREAM trademark Blues Rocker "White Room," the energetic Rocker "Politician," the Robert Johnson rendition classic Blues Rocker "Crossroads," the breathtaking Blues Rocker "Steppin' Out," the slow smooth soothing Blues Rocker "Sitting On Top Of The World," the slow blistering powerful Blues classic "Spoonful," Ginger Baker's last stand "Toad" and the fast paced Blues Rocker to conclude this DVD concert edition "I'm So Glad." Also included in this DVD concert edition are rare off-stage interviews with all three memnbers that reveal their influences, techniques and feelings of each band member.

Overall, this is one hell of a concert worth seeking and checking out on DVD especially if you are a new and curious listener to the sound and music of CREAM for the first time.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary historic concert on DVD to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music DVD collection. This legendary DVD concert has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. The "CREAM FAREWELL CONCERT" DVD is part of Rock n' Roll history and is one of those priceless gems that you would not want to be without.

In closing, CREAM'S farewell concert performance on 26 November 1968 would mark the end of an era and close the book to one of Rock's most legendary bands ever. OR SO IT SEEMED. CREAM'S music and their influence on Rock n' Roll would be felt to this very day. Other legendary three-man bands that would be born from the same mold and follow in the glorious tradition of CREAM would be legendary bands such as GRAND FUNK RAILROAD and RUSH. CREAM would later receive the highest ultimate hono
