Ted Neeley makes for a wimpy looking Jesus in Norman Jewison's screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice "rock opera," which was a smash on stage in the early '70s. Jewison (Other People's Money) adds some good exterior settings in the desert, but Lloyd Webber and Rice's dialogue-free story (everything is sung, as in a real opera), with its quasi-profundities about the inner demons of principal figures in the life of Christ, is the real hook. Yvonne Elliman sings the show's best-known song, "I Don't Know How to Love Him." --Tom KeoghCustomer Reviews:

Joan Collins defined the "Greed is Good" decade as Alexis Carrington on Dynasty, and became a pop culture icon in the process. This eye-opening boxed set recalls her formative years as a contract player for Fox studios. Movie superstardom eluded Motion Picture Magazine's Most Promising New Star of 1957, but these five films show her to mostly excellent advantage. Three are enormously entertaining, one is a guilty pleasure, and, in Stopover Tokyo (1957), a tepid Cold War drama costarring Robert Wagner, she seems to be channeling Elizabeth Taylor. The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing (1955) offers Collins one of her juiciest roles as Evelyn Nesbit, the wide-eyed chorus girl at the center of the real-life crime of the turn of the century, the murder of her married lover, architect Stanford White (Ray Milland) by Nesbit's unstable husband, Henry K. Thaw (Farley Granger). Another sure bet is Seven Thieves, with Collins holding her own opposite Edward G. Robinson, Rod Steiger and Eli Wallach as a "mantrap" with a seductive role in the $4 million heist of a Monte Carlo casino. The suburban sex farce Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys (1958) is dated, but naughty good fun, with an intoxicating Collins as a bored housewife with designs on neglected husband Paul Newman. Sea Wife (1957) stars Richard Burton at his brooding best as a man desperately seeking to reunite with the woman with whom he was once shipwrecked on an island. Little does he know that she is a nun. Collins is a bit at sea herself in this film's more melodramatic moments, but there are tantalizing glimpses throughout this collection of the prime time diva to come, as in the The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing when a cooly contemptuous Nesbit finally stands up to Thaw's family, or in Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys, when she surprises Newman' in his hotel room, just as his own wife (Joanne Woodward) arrives unannounced at his door. --Donald LiebensonDescription

Molly Shannon, the latest Saturday Night Live comic to have a movie built around her, isn't exactly funny--in fact, she's a little unsettling. Her creation, the neurotic Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher, invites laughter because she's a little too close to the bone for anyone who grew up feeling ugly and unloved, which is a lot of people. Mary lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns), who insists that Mary study business. Mary herself yearns to be famous and admired, though for what isn't exactly clear; she envisions some vague combination of singing, dancing, and acting that will make her a superstar. A talent show promises to be her ticket to stardom (the winning prize is a role in "a movie with positive moral values"), and she won't let her loser status or any hostile cheerleaders stand in her way. Meanwhile, Mary acts out dating fantasies with trees and signposts, envisions the school lunch room bursting into a Fame-like dance number, and longs for the biggest jock in school. What makes Superstar more than just a collection of bad high school memories is that, though the formulaic plot redeems Mary, the movie as a whole isn't so sure. Mary completely loses herself in her obsessive fantasies--many inspired by cheesy made-for-TV movies--but there's always someone watching, aghast, as Mary acts out her inner thoughts. Is she misunderstood or freakish? Superstar never commits to one side or the other, which makes it both comic and uncomfortable. --Bret FetzerCustomer Reviews:

NASCAR - Dale Earnhardt Jr. - Any Given Day

Product Description
Dale Earnhardt Jr: Any Given Day is a whirlwind trip through a small slice in the frantic life of NASCAR's most electric name. Get to know his friends and crew as he takes us behind doors that cameras have never before dared to open. Along the way, sit down with the man as he talks with you, the fan, one-on-one about life on and off the track.Amazon.com
Better than an all-day pit pass, Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Any Given Day offers an all-access invitation to a week in the life of NASCAR's reigning superstar. For fans of "Little E," this professionally made home movie is Jr.'s way of saying "thanks for your support" while giving those same fans an idea of how challenging fame can be when you're the heir to NASCAR royalty. Without a single mention of Dale Sr.'s fatal accident in 2001, it's clear that Jr. bears the burden of his father's racing legacy, added to the punishing demands of an exhausting public-appearance schedule, boring photo sessions and TV commercial shoots, practice and qualifying runs, and weekends devoted to pursuing the Winston (now Nextel) Cup championship. And yet, this day-by-day video journal also shows Jr. enjoying the prime of his life, kickin' back or hunting with his buds (the "Dirty Mo Posse"), hangin' with his shop crew, getting fitted for expensive suits, or relishing a tour of his new and secretly located home in North Carolina. Oh, yeah... there's also some NASCAR action, including Jr.'s win at the Checkers Auto Parts 500 (Nov. 2, 3003) and loss to Michael Waltip at Talladega. Overall, however, Any Given Day is a revealing look at the pros and cons of fame and fortune, with Dale Jr. keeping it real in a whirlwind of high-speed living. Even if you're not a fan, it's a behind-the-scenes NASCAR portrait you won't want to miss. --Jeff ShannonCustomer Reviews:

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson--dark, wiry, and tense meets blond, lanky, and loose--make a solid comic team (and previously appeared together in Zoolander), but the funniest man in Starsky and Hutch is Vince Vaughn. Vaughn dives into his role as a sleazy drug dealer (who nonetheless buys a pony for his daughter's bat mitzvah) with the offhand zest that he brings to almost every role (from Swingers to Old School) and effortlessly steals every scene he's in. Vaughn has concocted a new and undetectable kind of cocaine, and only two cops who aren't afraid to break the rules--our titular pair--can catch him. But the plot isn't the point; mocking-yet-loving jabs at the '70s, including the homoerotic overtones of Starsky and Hutch's partnership, are what this movie is about. The satire is surprisingly mild but entertaining nonetheless, particularly when Vaughn or Snoop Dogg (as informant Huggy Bear) hold the screen. --Bret FetzerDescription
In Starsky & Hutch, the origins of the charismatic crime-fighting duo David Starsky and Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson are explored when these undercover Bay City detectives are partnered for their very first assignment. Ben Stiller plays the tightly wound Detective David Starsky who is thrown together with Owen Wilson's easygoing Detective Ken Hutchinson on a high-stakes case. Platinum-selling rapper and actor Snoop Dogg plays their savvy street informant Huggy Bear. Vince Vaughn also joins the cast as Reese Feldman, a smooth-talking entrepreneur with an eye towards the future.

Before Andrew Lloyd Webber took over Broadway with his operatic productions and Tim Rice tossed in his lot with Disney's animated musicals, they were the young turks of musical theater and their rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar was their calling card. Director Gale Edwards's 1999 stage revival, which became the basis for this video production (also available on CD), takes the show out of ancient Jerusalem to an indeterminate mix of modern New York (complete with graffiti-scrawled walls and T-shirt garbed disciples) and timeless Rome. The grandly abstract sets, rainbow lighting, and striking costumes are more theater than cinema, but like the previous made-for-video Lloyd Webber-Rice production Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the enormous soundstages give the director free reign to combine the mediums. The setting folds fascism, intolerance, and revolution into a portrait out of time, robbing the play of its powerful historical grounding but injecting it with energy and insight. As Christ, Glenn Carter (who played the role in the 2000 Broadway revival) flashes his anger and rolls his eyes at Judas (Jerome Pradon) but cannot deny the truths of Judas's fears: "Every word you say today gets twisted 'round some other way." As Christ sees his cult of personality overtake his message and struggles with the fears of his sacrifice, he reaches within for faith and forgiveness, giving the show the spiritual dimension it so often lacks.
It's an entertaining, thoughtful, and well-sung production. Edwards avoids the tepidity of Norman Jewison's solemn 1973 film, driving forward with energetic editing and swooping cameras, and guided at all times by the dramatic, exhilarating score. --Sean Axmaker
Description
A brand-new production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice classic musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar" tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus. It describes his entry into Jerusalem, the enmity that his preaching and his popularity causes among the Jewish religious leaders, his betrayal by Judas, mocking contempt of Herod, and the trial in front of Pontius Pilate, who despite his sympathy towards Jesus as a person, bows to the demands of Caiaphas, the Chief Priest, and has him crucified.Customer Reviews:
