The Mummy
If you're expecting bandaged-wrapped corpses and a lurching Boris Karloff-type villain, then you've come to the wrong movie. But if outrageous effects, a hunky hero, and some hearty laughs are what you're looking for, the 1999 version of The Mummy is spectacularly good fun. Yes, the critics called it "hokey," "cheesy," and "pallid." Well, the critics are unjust. Granted, the plot tends to stray, the acting is a bit of a stretch, and the characters occasionally slip into cliché, but who cares? When that action gets going, hold tight--those two hours just fly by.
The premise of the movie isn't that far off from the original. Egyptologist and general mess Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) discovers a map to the lost city of Hamunaptra, and so she hires rogue Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) to lead her there. Once there, Evelyn accidentally unlocks the tomb of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a man who had been buried alive a couple of millennia ago with flesh-eating bugs as punishment for sleeping with the pharaoh's girlfriend. The ancient mummy is revived, and he is determined to bring his old love back to life, which of course means much mayhem (including the unleashing of the 10 plagues) and human sacrifice. Despite the rather gory premise, this movie is fairly tame in terms of violence; most of the magic and surprise come from the special effects, which are glorious to watch, although Imhotep, before being fully reconstituted, is, as one explorer puts it, rather "juicy." Keep in mind this film is as much comedy as it is adventure--those looking for a straightforward horror pic will be disappointed. But for those who want good old-fashioned eye-candy kind of fun, The Mummy ranks as one of choicest flicks of 1999. --Jenny Brown
The Mummy Returns
Proving that bigger is rarely better, The Mummy Returns serves up so much action and so many computer-generated effects that it quickly grows exhausting. In his zeal to establish a lucrative franchise, writer-director Stephen Sommers dispenses with such trivial matters as character development and plot logic, and charges headlong into an almost random buffet of minimum story and maximum mayhem, beginning with a prologue establishing the ominous fate of the Scorpion King (played by World Wrestling Federation star the Rock, in a cameo teaser for his later starring role in--you guessed it--The Scorpion King). Dormant for 5,000 years, under control of the Egyptian god Anubis, the Scorpion King will rise again in 1933, which is where we find The Mummy's returning heroes Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, now married and scouring Egyptian ruins with their 8-year-old son, Alex (Freddie Boath).
John Hannah (as Weisz's brother) and Oded Fehr (as mystical warrior Ardeth Bay) also return from The Mummy, and trouble begins when Alex dons the Scorpion King's ancient bracelet, coveted by the evil mummy Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), who's been revived by... oh, but does any of this matter? With a plot so disposable that it's impossible to care about anything that happens, The Mummy Returns is best enjoyed as an intermittently amusing and physically impressive monument of Hollywood machinery, with gorgeous sets that scream for a better showcase, and digital trickery that tops its predecessor in ambition, if not in payoff. By the time our heroes encounter a hoard of ravenous pygmy mummies, you'll probably enjoy this movie in spite of itself. --Jeff Shannon
The Scorpion King
There's nothing original in The Scorpion King, but this derivative action franchise gets off to a rousing start by cleverly stealing from a lot of better movies. Capitalizing on his brief cameo in The Mummy Returns, Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. World Wrestling Federation star the Rock) stars as Mathayus, an Akkadian assassin in the age preceding Egyptian pharaohs, who vows to avenge his brother's murder by an undefeated warlord (Steven Brand) prophesied to become the desert-ruling Scorpion King. Their battle for supremacy comprises most of the film's brisk 95-minute running time, punctuated by comic relief from Mathayus's obligatory sidekick (Grant Heslov), romance with a beautiful sorceress (Kelly Hu), and alliance with a massive Nubian (Michael Clarke Duncan) on the eve of their climactic showdown. There's no rhyme or reason to the film's depiction of ancient civilization (the costuming is particularly ludicrous), but the Rock demonstrates adequate action-star potential, and director Chuck Russell (The Mask) wraps it all in a slick, professional package. --Jeff Shannon

The Mummy .......2007-08-01
These movies are pretty good even though they are a bit over the top at times... it is a Mummy though so what should I expect. Nevertheless the first was great, the second was pretty good and the decline continued for the Scorpion King. i still enjoy the trilogy and am glad it was turned in to one finally.
Good Package.. 2 of them worth it........2007-07-14
Well.. there's nothing much to tell... These package is worth for the price... with a little extra. Enjoy

When it was first broadcast in 1975, there had never been a more lavishly produced science fiction TV series than Space: 1999, a British production whose budget for the first of its two seasons ran an astounding £3.25 million. What keeps us fans enthralled after all these years has only partly to due with the first-rate production values, the plausibly constructed spaceship models, and expert special effects. The tone of the show is one of scientific dispassion, setting it apart from its TV sci-fi predecessors such as Star Trek, whose mood was more convivial. Our heroes here are in dire circumstances that require cool heads as a survival trait. Those circumstances: the 311 crew members of Moonbase Alpha experience a cataclysm that causes the moon to break away from Earth's orbit and travel endlessly through space, turning our heroes into unintentional explorers. No TV series has created a more palpable feel of hard science fiction than this.
Of course the show is not without its detractors; it has been soundly lambasted for its many scientific errors. No less august a figure than Isaac Asimov criticized the show for its premise in the opening episode, "Breakaway," which had nuclear explosions on the "dark side of the moon" somehow propelling it out of Earth's orbit and flying through space without regard to any physical laws. In "Earthbound," aliens traveling to Earth state it will take them 75 years to reach their destination, making one wonder why it didn't take the moon that long to encounter the aliens. While these are serious complaints, fans tend to remember the scientific seriousness of the series and the sense of awe created by the many strange creatures and phenomena that the crew members encounter on their journey through the galaxy.
The Space: 1999 30th Anniversary Mega Set collects all 48 episodes broadcast over the show's two seasons, contained on 17 DVDs that include vintage interviews, production stills, TV promotional spots, and interactive menus, and some material that was not seen in the original U.S. broadcasts has been restored. The episodes do not use the 2005 high-def remasters, so this is essentially the same as the 2002 Mega Set, but at a fraction of the shelf space (the Thinpak packaging is nicely compact) and a fraction of the price. --Jim Gay

Especially for definitive collections on genre TV shows........2007-09-08
In 1999 an explosion at a lunar nuclear waste dump sends the moon out of Earth's orbit, and the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha find themselves on an unexpected journey across the universe with no way home. All 48 episodes of this space series have been remastered and are offered in an extensive Anniversary collection that includes bonus footage and many extras. Prior fans of the TV series will relish both the complete set and the extras, while newcomers will find it astonishing space action suitable for any well-stocked science fiction DVD collection; especially for definitive collections on genre TV shows.

just as expected. dvd's came in a timely manner and no problems with yhem so far.
Exactly as I remember it.......2007-08-23
Over the years I've always tried to catch this show any time they rebroadcast it on regular television(not many times let me tell you). I was excited to see them redo the megaset as I'd missed my chance to get the first one. Who knows maybe they'll redo it again? In this case I hope so...remastered apparently means a new box. You would have assumed they would have redone the sound, it's still in a lesser format than 5.1! As with many of Fox tv shows the menus are really not in a way I'd be happy with...Is it just me or does anyone else find the inability to watch a show all the way through annoying? i prefer tv shows on dvd where they allow you to watch all episode without having to go back to the main menu each episode( ala house, how i met your mother, etc..). All in all, I wouldn't recommend this title unless you are just buying it just to have, really not that special.
Better Price? YES! Better Remaster? NO!!!.......2007-08-02
I feel ripped off...I really do. I had all the old American releases on DVD (which I will be selling to a local merchant because they deal in used DVDs) to recoup some of the cost I spent on this set. THIS IS NOT THE NETWORK DVD/UK EDITION REMASTERS FOR REGION 1...let's make that VERY clear.
If you have a multi-region/format player, go over to Amazon UK and order the First Season from Network...it is *spectacular*. You can also pre-order the Second Season from Network there as well (release date is Sept 10). The Network DVDs have phenomenal video AND audio, crisp and clear 5.1 audio in fact that gives your sub-woofer a workout. Needless to say, I pre-ordered mine from across the pond the day I got this.
Why 3 stars? Overall story and series would have gotten a 5. Minus four stars for the remaster rip-off, plus a star for slimmer packaging/better price, plus a star for *some* improvement in the audio (now 2.0 stereo as opposed to mono) and a bit of an improvement on Season Two eps video.
If you have this...save your cash, even though the old discs might take up more shelf-space. If you don't and only have a standard Region One player, then by all means get it. If you have a multi region/format player...RUN to Amazon UK and purchase the Network Season One and Two Versions.
There is no comparison...the Network DVDs are spectacular!
Despite the errors, the show has much to offer.......2007-08-02
1. The show does have many scientific errors, which can make some of the plots implausible. However, my approach is to watch the show more for its treatment/depiction of philosophical issues than for its scientific treatments/depictions. Look at the episodes as allegories, as science fiction fairy tales, and you will find them enjoyable (after all, most fairy tales are very implausible).
2. Some of the critiques of the plot errors are a bit unfair - they show that the reviewer hasn't really watched the show closely. For instance, the Amazon review bemoans that "In 'Earthbound,' aliens traveling to Earth state it will take them 75 years to reach their destination, making one wonder why it didn't take the moon that long to encounter the aliens." Uhm, maybe because two episodes earlier the Moon had an encounter with a small black hole which caused the Moon to be hurled far away from the Earth. That is why in the episode "Earthbound" the Moonbase Alphans didn't know what direction Earth was in anymore - with help from the aliens they learned at least what direction Earth was in. So while you can certainly argue with some of the science in the show, at least for the fictional/fantasy world the show exists in, there is consistency in it.
Another complaint is how season two has different uniforms and different decoration of the set from season one. The show had a one year hiatus and I suppose they thought the audience would just assume that some time had passed and the Alphans made some modifications - heck we change fashions here on Earth over time, why not for the Moonbase? What is so unbelievable about that? Also, with time, there would be a change in personnel as people die, and/or needs of the Moonbase change and people get reassigned. Of course, this doesn't explain Barry Morse's character being replaced by Maya (the Mr. Spock rip-off). That, I will easily concede, is not a nit-picky minor detail to be overlooked.
3. And other critiques say things like "without regard to any physical laws." Balooney. Without enough regard, I'll agree with. But to insinuate that the show had no regard to _any_ physical laws is harsher than it needs to be. Yes, the show didn't pay enough regard to physical laws.
Anyway, again, treat each episode by itself - treat them as allegories, treat them as futuristic fairy tales, and just enjoy the stories themselves. Back to the episode "Earthbound" (with guest star Christopher Lee), it is a new twist on the "lifeboat" type of philosophical dilemma - if you only have enough room to save one person, who goes? Actually, several moral questions are raised and treated in that episode. And that is what is best about Space: 1999. It is a very thought provoking show - for some though, they can't stop complaining about the science errors that create some implausible staging for the plots to unfold upon. It's like going to a play and complaining how the set pieces aren't real, or going to a movie and complain that it is implausible for superman to fly. Superman is a metaphor - by staining at the gnat details, you are missing the meaning. The show was never about hard science. So don't expect it.
Relax, and just enjoy the stories for the stories, for their metaphors, for their thought provoking treatment and discussion of moral and philosophical issues. If you want more hard science science fiction, there are other shows you can watch and enjoy.

Call it Buffy the Culinary Slayer. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who usually runs around staking vampires and fighting demons, turns cute and cuddly as an aspiring chef in this magical-realist comedy that borrows a page--heck, whole chapters--from Like Water for Chocolate. Out at the market one day, Gellar stumbles on both a magical crab and the babelicious Sean Patrick Flanery who, wouldn't you know it, is opening up a posh restaurant at Bendel's department store (actually, the two have been brought together by fairy godfather Christopher Durang). Odd and implausible circumstances give these two cuties more opportunities to moon at each other, and suddenly Gellar's cooking takes off--turns out all her nicey-nice feelings towards Flanery are going into her cooking, with the help of that quiet but powerful little crab. Gellar's almost-closed restaurant starts to thrive, and her desserts begin making everyone horny. A cute premise that never really takes off, Simply Irresistible glides along on Gellar's charisma alone; in her off hours, Buffy certainly can be the lighthearted girl next door, and Gellar works to give some depth to her one-dimensional character. Flanery, though, while appealing at times, plays up his character's commitment-phobia to irritating degrees. Chock full of fairy-tale elements that never really come together (is that crab really necessary?), Irresistible does boast charming performances by Patricia Clarkson and Dylan Baker as Flanery's secretary and boss, respectively. However, it's a little odd to see these two, who scored raves for two serious and harrowing art-house flicks (Clarkson in High Art, Baker in Happiness) doing the light-and-fluffy romantic comedy thing. They're two of the very few ingredients that occasionally make this soufflé of a movie rise; at the end, however, it's flat as a pancake. --Mark Englehart
Description
Beautiful restaurant owner Amanda Shelton (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is falling head over heels for handsome, hard-driving executive Tom Bartlett (Sean Patrick Flanery). Unfortunately, Tom is too busy to recognize that she's truly the girl of his dreams until Amanda puts him under her tantalizing spell!
Customer Reviews:
romantic comedy with a little magic and refreshing.......2007-09-16
Hopeful anecdote to life when you strive to build your own business with long life friends and neighbors.
Simply Sarah Michelle.......2007-08-23
This is your typical cute chick flick, but it's one that I stand by. It may be a little on the cheesy side, but for some reason, it always gives me warm fuzzies. Not only that, but it seems to always inspire me to try and cook.
If only they had cast Freddie Prinze Jr. .......2007-06-04
I thought Sean Patrick Flannery was too caddish to be believable as a foil for Sarah Michelle Gellar. She's very pretty in this movie but I found the movie awkward to watch. I think casting Freddie Prinze Jr. as a ruthless serial monogamist would have been a brave yet successful choice because the actor has the sensitivity and range to play a cold character that can still be believable as Sarah Michelle Gellar's love interest. Fans of The Wire will enjoy seeing The Greek and D'Angelo in the cast.
A Screwball Romance/Comedy with a Lot of Heart.......2007-05-09
I wonder what the suits in the room were thinking when they heard the concept of this movie:
"An angel and his magical crab help a good-hearted, but lousy chef save her dead mother's restaurant and the heart of a cynical handsome businessman."
Jaws drop.
Suit #1: What an amazing idea!
Suit #2: A magical crab? Will it sing calypso music?
Suit #3: Name it Sebastian!
Suit #1: That's been done.
Idea Guy: No, no calypso. But great food. Mouthwatering. Sexy eclairs.
Suit #2: Yes, yes! Marvelous!
Suit #1: Wait - what's an eclair? Some kind of doughnut?
Suit #2: No,it's an elongated pastry filled with custard or whipped cream.
Suit #3: (chuckles,elbows Suit#1) O-kay. I get that metaphor.
Idea Guy: There's a scene where the magical crab wears a lettuce leaf and waves to the handsome businessman as he enters the kitchen.
Suit #3: (nods head excitedly) That is *exactly* the kind of movie we need to make!
This movie is odd in every sense, but that's why I like it. It's not your typical romance movie. Sarah Michelle Gellar is very sweet in this movie and there's a definite chemistry between her and Sean Patrick Flanery. This is a quirky, charming movie. Very adorable! Although Betty Buckley was wasted in this movie.
A Magic movie for everybody.......2007-05-09
I bought this movie years ago, and everytime I see it again I really feel great. The romance in this movie give us the hope to have a better time every day, even the history is simple it has enough energy to touch our innerselves.
This movie is one of the romantic and delightful pictures I have ever see, mostly because of the great actors, Sarah Michelle really have chemistry with Sean Patrick.

Strictly for kids, this 1999 live-action feature version of the popular cartoon series seems long even at 80 minutes. As a video, it's easier to take and appreciate for what works best in the story: the special effects. Matthew Broderick plays the security guard who is physically transformed into a multi-use cyborg with a zillion attachments, from stilts to helicopter blades to skis. A crimefighter in raincoat and fedora, and equipped with a nifty Gadgetmobile, the hero investigates the death of a man linked to the villainous Sanford Scolex (Rupert Everett). Scolex, who blames Gadget for having to wear a prosthetic hand, develops an evil robot twin of the good inspector, causing much mischief and giving Broderick an opportunity to poke fun at his own performance of the virtuous Inspector. The action is shaky, the script plods along, and the effects soon take over; Everett has to go to the extremes of hamminess just to be seen above it. But children of a certain age will almost certainly engage with the more clever stuff and forgive the rest. --Tom Keogh

Bad Gadget. Bad Gadget........2007-09-10
Remember growing up and watching this oddly funny, inspirational show that dabbled in both the absurd, the diabolical, and the genius all at the same time. Don Adams of "Get Smart" fame wisely allowed his voice to be our uncanny hero, you know, the guy that couldn't save the day if his life depended on it, but thankfully had Penny and Brain there with him at all times to assist when needed. This was a part of my growing up, thinking that the Chief would, at any time, give me a self-destructing sheet of paper with my mission was always something I was dreaming for. Who else wanted to hold Penny's computer book for just one moment in our lives? Was I the only one hoping to one day catch a glimpse of Dr. Claw's face? If you are chanting "YES. YES. YES" along with me, then you are already aware of my feelings with Disney's debacle of a feature film presentation. Now, this isn't to say that there weren't elements that I found entertaining (gosh, am I saying this...), but overall this seemed to forget the foundation that it was built upon - even the perverse cameo at the end sent shivers up my spine. Where did the creators go wrong? Let's begin by saying that this was a concept, a cartoon, that Disney had no right placing their expensive hands into.
I was hooked at the beginning surprisingly. Why? I wanted to see the birth of Gadget and the reason why Claw and him were always pitted against each other. I wanted to see the creation of good and evil, but after twenty minutes, I saw Disney do what they do best. Matthew Broderick nervously steps into a role that he obviously wasn't ready for. He plays Gadget himself, a bumbling security cop who dreams of being a police officer. Due to Rupert Everett's whining and obvious lack of knowledge of who Dr. Claw is, the two find themselves crossing each others paths at a bio-technology lab where a new form of artificial intelligence is being designed. There is a pretty girl/scientist (played by Joely Fisher) whom John Brown (Broderick, pre-Gadget) pines for, but cannot win because he doesn't have the confidence to win her over. Well, we all know where this is headed next, and Disney lays it on thick as Broderick uses every torturous gadget in his disposal to eliminate ... not Dr. Claw, but a clone that is demolishing the city ... can he win? I can't give it away, though it would make you better film viewers if I just blurted the ending ... who would pay money for this plastic form of entertainment.
Alright, characters - there was no commentary on this film, so I only watched it once (thankfully!), but Broderick was the obvious stand out. He tried, I know I feel bad saying this, but he did try to bring some depth to this character. Gadget is a bumbling idiot - but he has a good heart. I thought Broderick was a good choice personality wise, but he never took Gadget to that next cinematic level. I wanted to have the foundation of the cartoon, but then grow into a feature film that had heart and dedication. In this mere 78 minute short film, there was nothing. So, on one side we have Gadget (Broderick doing his best), then on the other side we have the worst Hollywood idea ever - Rupert Everett as Dr. Claw. This was a hazard. This was Disney thinking they could take a enormously popular villain and give him a soul. This was Rupert needing to ham it up more than Broderick so that there was a share of the screen. There was no evil, there was no corruption, there was nothing that even faintly resembled the "Claw" that we grew up with. The henchman seemed more in tune than Everett. He wasn't funny, he wasn't sinister, he wasn't diabolical in any way. He was fluff, and that wasn't the Dr. Claw that I attempted to pay money to see. His portrayal was a disgrace to anyone that has ever even glanced at the cartoon. Arg, it makes me mad just to mention it in this review. Rupert Everett ruined Dr. Claw. Penny (Michelle Trachtenberg) seemed to follow the Everett style of "Gadet-ing", but not following her character at all. Shouldn't there have been a prerequisite to see the cartoon prior to making the film. Oh, filmmakers, how I shun thee.
I guess if one could literally pull themselves away from the hideous acting by Everett, the rest of the film just seemed raced and pushed. I was happy to see that it only lasted 78 minutes, and they did cover quite a bit of ground, but it just felt like they weren't willing to give the credit due to the cartoon. This was a cult cartoon, and to see Disney play for a younger audience, care nothing for the pre-existing older audience that grew up with Gadget, make jokes that seemed cliché, and bubble the bad guy. It was hard to watch. I was pleased with the script, the director tried to go dark with a really random Broderick attempting to play a darker, more fun character as Gadget's clone - but overall this film just lacked the spunk from the cartoon. I wanted animation, I wanted excitement, I wanted an adventure that would befuddle Adams himself, but instead I had a story that seemed like it would be in the dollar bin within the week of its release.
Overall, this film wasn't horrid. The story itself wasn't anything I could watch again, but their ability to not overextend the plot, made it for simple viewing. It was 78 minutes of filming that I didn't mind, but couldn't get myself to watch it again. I will forever hate Everett for what he did to Dr. Claw, I think Dr. Claw will forever hate Everett as well. His portrayal ruined this film. It knocked it to the ground with no opportunity to pick it up again. Broderick was watchable, but I don't think he was what this film needed. "Inspector Gadget" is a perfect example of what happens when Disney puts their hands into a project and is determined to ensure that children get laughs from semi-crass physical humor. This was a sad attempt of a film, but a part of me is happy that I watched it - now the cartoon seems better than ever!

lots of comedy, a bit of crime.......2006-09-04
This movie was not as good as the second gadget movie. It was funny, and that was the best part. Claw was a very bad villian, so I was into that. I like villians.
The first time that I wanted to rent it at blockbuster, my Dad thought that it may be inappropriate. Then he changed his mind. We watched it together, and like it very much. It was so good that I know own it on DVD.
Go-Go Gadget Whatever.......2005-12-12
Matthew Broderick was a wonderful Inspector Gadget,I would love to have this on DVD,I have it on VHS. I want to see the music video of I'll be you're everything by Youngstown. Michelle Trachenburg was a wonderful Penny.
Great Cast Wasted In A So-So Movie!.......2005-10-18
I liked the Inspector Gadget cartoon so when I heard they made it into a live-action movie I went to a movie theater to see it and despite having a great cast that includes Matthew Broadrick, Michelle Trachtenberg, Joely Fisher, etc, the plot of this movie was kind of rushed and uneven and just disappointing!

This capable and intelligent adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic novel is one in a long line of Great Expectations put to film. But this two-part drama distinguishes itself with its faithfulness to the book and outstanding performances by the principal cast. Ioan Gruffudd plays the adult Pip, an orphan who lives with his sister and her kindly blacksmith husband. Pip's life changes when he is sent for by Miss Haversham (Charlotte Rampling), an eccentric and wealthy spinster who wears only her bridal gown, which she was wearing when she was left at the altar years before. Introduced to Estella (played later as a woman by Justine Waddell), Miss Haversham's contemptuous ward, Pip falls in love with the girl and spends the remainder of his youth attempting to be good enough for her--a state of affairs that suddenly seems possible when a mysterious benefactor makes Pip's education as a London gentleman possible. Gruffudd is a fine choice for the central character, and his naturally intense expression underscores Pip's problems with insecurity and sense of deservedness. Waddell is an appropriately solipsistic Estella, slightly reminiscent of Vivien Leigh, and Rampling's casting is an unexpected but terrific move on the filmmaker's part. The veteran actress's career-long air of mystery, vague suffering, and intense sexuality bring a potent power to Miss Haversham's baleful looks. Dickens would be proud of this one. --Tom Keogh
Description
Ioan Gruffudd, Justine Waddell and Charlotte Rampling star in this adaptation of Charles Dickens' enduring classic Great Expectations, the story of a young orphan named Pip who lives with his sister and her blacksmith husband, Joe.
One day Pip is sent to play at the residence of Miss Havisham, a frightening, elderly woman who seems locked in the past. She wears ancient bridal attire and never moves from the dusty upper rooms of her home. Miss Havisham's beautiful but contemptuous ward, Estella, makes Pip feel appallingly inferior, creating in him a desire to better himselfchanging his life forever. But despite his efforts to improve himself, the frustrated Pip seems destined to remain Joe's apprentice. Until one day a lawyer calls to inform Pip that he has "great expectations:" Pip is to be released form his apprenticeship and educated in London as a gentleman! The benefactor who has made this life transformation possible, however, wishes to remain anonymous.

Mr. Dickens' Divorce Tells in this Story........2007-04-06
The story focuses upon a young man, who desires a young woman, who is pretty but immature, and makes a fool of him. The attractive, but deceitful charm of the pretty young woman leaves the young man empty, and so you.
The 1981-version has a better first episode; but then drags painfully. Both versions have some strange scenes.
The 1947-version is much better, with John Mills, father of Haley Mills.
Mr. Dickens wrote the story "Great Expectations" in 1861, after leaving his wife. Mr. Dickens married his wife Catherine in 1836. They were together 21-years; during which he wrote his brilliant novels: "Oliver Twist"-1839, "A Christmas Carol"-1843, and "David Copperfield"-1850. Mr. Dickens left his wife in 1858.
Unlike "Great Expectations", Mr. Dickens's great novels have a high-minded thought; balance with moments of cheer, triumph for the main character, adventure, and interesting characters. A novel is not a classic just because it is: old, assigned in English class, and written by the writer of other novels indeed brilliant. "Great Expectations" has portions which show Mr. Dickens's talent; however overall it lacks the charm and elements that make his other stories enjoyable, true, classics.
Walt Disney, usually brilliant, made the poor decision to go from one feature length animation film at a time, directly, to working on three such films at a time, over-extending and nearly bankrupting the company, as World War II closed Europe to Disney. The Disneys saved the studio, only, by becoming a public corporation, giving up total family control and ownership. Mr. Disney's poor decision followed the tragic death of his beloved mother, caused by a leaking gas heater, that had supposedly been repaired by a Disney studio mechanic the day before. Mr. Disney hurried to use work as a distraction from his grief. (This is also likely the reason Bambi's mother is killed.) Mr. Disney eventually bounced back. Divorce is also traumatic, even if for the better. I do not judge Mr. Dickens's divorce. I do say Mr. Dickens's divorce from the mother of his ten children affected his writing, and for the worse, telling in the empty "Great Expectations".
The Production is Great......But dont Buy this DVD .......2007-04-05
Even though I have never read the book I found this Production very good.
I would recommend this to any one who is a Dickens Fan but do youself a favour and dont buy this DVD release.
As a British review on Amazon uk site indicated this DVD looks as if it was copied straight off the TV and also the commentary in the beginning and end of the movie telling us about the Great Expectations novel made the DVD worse.
Masterpiece Theatre has spoiled this Great BBC Production of Dickens Great Expectations with it's Commentary (even though they think they are being helpful- but are not) and poor DVD.
Four Stars for the Production itself but giving this Two stars because of the DVD quaility.
Wait until BBC Release a DVD of the Production and the DVD quaility will be much, much better.
I will be selling this DVD and wait until BBC release the DVD in Australia.
bad DVD production.......2007-03-02
The video quality of this fine adaptation is terrible. I've been waiting years for a DVD release only to be dissapointed by the poor video transfer to DVD.
Excellent film adaptation.......2007-01-23
Charles Dickens triumphs once more. This excellent film adaptation of the masterpiece novel manages to be somewhat dark, gritty, and mysterious, and still maintain quirky memorable characters and a tangled web of plots in the typical Dickens way. Justine Waddell's performance as the icy Estella (a very different role from her warm character in "Wives and Daughters") is perfect, complimented by Ioan Gruffud's dramatic display as the hero of story, Pip. The movie is fairly true to the book, and likewise manages to be ambiguous, but satisfying. Fans of Dickens work will not want to miss this instant classic, and anyone looking for a good drama with mystery and character study will not be disappointed.
Great Expectations Box Set.......2007-01-10
This movie follows the book pretty well. My 8th grade students enjoyed it. We watched the movie before we read the book since sometimes the book can be hard to follow with the English flavoring in the language and the many characters. I would reccommend this movie.

Has it really been decades since the first James Bond film? Over the course of 19 films and 5 Bonds, the beloved film spy has evolved to keep up with the times, but James Bond is at heart still the same suave, urbane tough guy that Sean Connery established in 1962's Dr. No. The James Bond Story traces the development of the character, interviewing Bond leading ladies Maud Adams and Jane Seymour and Bond actors Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan and exploring the ups and downs of the filmic franchise over the years. Also, director Terence Young, producer Cubby Broccoli, and, of course, Ian Fleming follow the progression of the Bond character from its first onscreen realization through the 2000-model Bond. There's lip service paid to his progress from a womanizing, Martini-swilling Neanderthal in a tux to a somewhat more politically correct man, and the traditional Bond killing gadgets get treatment as well (complete with outtakes and flubs). This is just the thing for Bond fans and of the spy genre in general; an affectionate look at 40 years worth of James Bond. --Jerry Renshaw

Story about a secret agent who likes his Martinis stirred and not shaken (or is that shaken and not stirred?).......2007-05-15
XXXXX
This action-packed documentary is a behind-the-scenes look at everything that makes people like the James Bond or 007 movies. (For those into trivia, there was a 1954 James Bond TV episode and a 1956 Bond radio program.) It includes brief film clips (and a few longer clips that highlight dialogue) from all the 007 movies (meaning from 1962's "Dr. No," the first Bond movie to 1999's "The World is Not Enough," the last Bond movie that was still in production as this documentary was being made).
There are ten scenes in this brief documentary covering everything from the origins of the series, sex and girls, violence, gadgets to the five actors who up to 1999 portrayed James Bond, locations, Ian Fleming (the author who created 007 in 1952), and the predicted future of the movie series.
The initial interviews with the five Bond actors (Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan) as well as their comments throughout are, I found, very interesting. Be aware that at the beginning Connery mentions that there were a total of 20 Bond movies made. But as the documentary proceeds it shows printed on screen how many Bond movies each of these actors made. Respectively, these are {6,1,7,2,and 3 (as of 1999)}. The total is 19. Why the difference in totals?
The difference is due to the fact that Connery is including the movie titled "Never Say Never Again" (1983) in which he starred as Bond. However, the documentary is counting only those Bond movies made by `EON Productions' and "Never Say Never Again" was a non-EON production. Unfortunately, this fact is not mentioned by the narrator (actress Miranda Richardson) and this may cause confusion for some. (Another piece of trivia--there was a 1967 comic Bond movie made that was a non-EON production.)
Besides comments made by the Bond actors, there are also comments made by others involved with some of the Bond movies such as directors and producers. Comments are also made by "Bond girls" such as Maud Adams and Jane Seymour. (You will also see other Bond girls in brief film clips that are shown.) There is excellent archival footage of Ian Fleming and his James Bond writings. I also enjoyed the interviews with the Bond "gadget man" named "Q" (the late Desmond Llewelyn--who was in, count them, 17 Bond movies). These are some highlights. Much more interesting stuff is included.
The last scene of this documentary is called "The Furture" where the future of the James Bond movie series is discussed. It was predicted that Brosnan would make one more Bond movie and, as is known now, he did in 2002 (bringing the total EON Bond productions to 20). After that, they felt sure the series would continue. This documentary was right again! We now have a sixth James Bond portrayed by actor Daniel Craig who made his first Bond movie in 2006 (bringing the total EON Bond productions to 21 as of the date of this review).
I did have some minor problems with this documentary:
(1) I feel that, as discussed above, it should have been mentioned that the official Bond movies for this documentary were those made by EON productions. By not doing so, confusion in movie count was created.
(2) This documentary implies that all Bond movies were based on the writings of Ian Fleming. This is untrue. After Fleming died in 1964, there were other writers that took up the Bond saga and on whose writing some movies are based.
(3) On the DVD front case for this documentary (displayed above by Amazon), it says as of 1999, that there are "5 bonds; 19 films; over 30 years." The first two facts are correct. However, this documentary goes to 1999 so it would be more accurate if it read "over 35 years."
There is one major problem with this documentary. It does not discuss anything about the unique Bond theme music. This music is an essential ingredient of all the EON Bond movies. I thought this was a major oversight.
Finally, the DVD itself (the one released in 2000) is perfect in picture and sound quality. I found that some of the scene selections did not match the sections in the documentary. There is also one major extra--a multiple-choice twenty-question interactive trivia game. I found this interesting and fun but did find that the dates following some Bond movie titles were incorrect.
In conclusion, despite some minor problems and one major problem, I found that this documentary is a good way to increase your "Bond, James Bond" I.Q.
(1999; 50 min; full screen with wide screen sections; made for TV)

I ordered this about 2-3 weeks before Christmas. The delivery of this item was very prompt which I was impressed with. The packaging was really good, so I knew it got to my house safe.
The DVD was a gift to someone for Christmas so I myself have not watched the DVD and I don't think the receipent has had a chance to watch it to see if it had any problems. So, so far so good!
A Behind The Scenes Account Rearding The Making of A Bond Movie.......2005-08-02
Excellent. From Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan, this video gives you a look at all of the men who were Bond. Also the people behind the scenes who have the very important role of supporting the actors in their efforts to come to life. I highly recommend it for any Bond enthusiast.
The Inside Review Of The Story..........2004-05-03
The James Bond story is worth, buying or watching.
Great for any Bond fan who wants to know a little bit more about the secret agent and the films in the pass, from DR. No, to The World is Not Enough.
The Story is based on the coming of Bond, Gadgets, Girls, and more. Interviews with our favorite characters as Bond from past and present.
But the story is great, but could have added more to the story, more details, to be exact. Worth getting, by all means.
The Story of Bond....James Bond........2002-11-29
Are you a bond fan? This is the movie for you! Filled with exciting information on all the James bond films from Dr. No to The World is Not Enough, this story is one not to be missed. Also included are interviews with many people of the "Bond Family" including Cubby Broccoli, Michael G. Wilson, Terence Young, John Glen, Louis Gilbert, Maud Adams, Jane Seymour, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Sean Connery, George Lazenby and many more.... There are also exclusive interviews with Ian Fleming from his home Goldeneye in Jamaica. This story contains chapters on the Bond girls, exotic locations, the novels of Ian Fleming and many more. The only downer to this is the very droll voice of narrator Miranda Richardson. Telling the tales of the movies, the novels and James Bond himself- this story should be in everyone's collection who calls themself a Bond fan!

The Space: 1999 Mega Set collects all 48 episodes broadcast over the show's two seasons, contained on 17 DVDs that include vintage interviews, production stills, TV promotional spots, and interactive menus. All episodes have been digitally remastered, and some material that was not seen in the original U.S. broadcasts has been restored. --Jim Gay

Space 1999.......2007-05-29
Quality of picture is not as good as I expected and no close caption available.
These two planets have been at war with one another, but neither side can gain an advantage. That is, until the Moon shows up........2007-02-07
'Space 1999' has been compared to Star Trek Voyager. If you can get past the premise of the show, that astronauts on 'Moon Base Alpha' are stranded on the Moon after a nuclear accident causes the Moon to leave the solar system, it's a great show. There's a hot shape-shifting alien (Maya), and each week, as the Moon travels thru the galaxy those on Moon Base Alpha meet various other aliens. They have small fighter-like spacecraft, and, who knows, maybe they did have some kind of super-reactor powering their base.
Instead of the whole series, I'd like to review just one episode 'The Last Enemy' that's always stuck with me.
In 'The Last Enemy', as the Moon passes by another star system a ship from one of the planets lands near Moon Base Alpha. The alien ship launches some hellacious looking missiles towards the Base, and, a commercial is cued. After commercial - the missiles roar over Moon Base Alpha - towards another planet in the solar system. The aliens on the ship contact Commander Koenig, saying, 'Not to worry, we have nothing against you, this is a private matter between us and the other planet of the solar system'.
Are these two planets at war?
Commander Koenig take a Moon-buggy out and visits the alien ship. Their commander isn't just female, they're all females. Their whole planet is populated by females. Of course, Koenig (Martin Landau) has a small affair with the commander of the alien ship.
Meanwhile, Moon Base Alpha receives a transmission from the other planet (and they're all men) - a planet filled with men. Their leader saying, 'if you don't put a stop to what's happening yourselves we're going to destroy this enemy ship, and probably you along with it'.
It turns out, these two planets have been at war with one another, but neither side can gain an advantage. That is, until the Moon shows up.
There are some negotiations in 'The Last Enemy', but in the end, Koenig destroys the alien ship, saving Moon Base Alpha once again.
Space:1999 The Ultimate Adventure Series!.......2007-02-05
I was born in 1968, so I was very young when "Space" premiered in 75. Never the less, it has been and always shall be my favorite sci-fi show of all time! As a kid, I preferred the second series to the first. For no reason other than it kept my attention better. I mean, what kid wouldn't love watching the beautiful Maya changing into differant animals and alien monsters every other episode. The second series had a much faster pace to it. Where as the first series was much more contemplative and metaphysical in nature. Which I never really came to appreciate until my adult years. Now I must say that I prefer the first series out of the two. This Megaset contains all 48 episodes over the shows 2 year run, and I believe is a must have for "ANY" fan of the genre. Whether it be science fiction, fantasy, or action adventure that tickles your fancy, this show has it all! Of course, then there is the Eagle Transporter!!! Which I've had an obsession with since the first time I laid eyes on it. It is the most realistic space ship ever depicted in a sci-fi show, and is in every episode but one. So, if you like watching shows with interesting plots, solid acting, action/adventure, fantasy/metaphysical elements, and lots and lots of explosions. Then you'll love Space:1999 and the Magaset is just waiting for you. Go on, Maya won't bite!!! :)
Sincerly, Commander Anderson :)
Yes I watched This In The 70's.......2006-12-14
OK, here goes. I'm ready for the haters to vote me to death here. I want to say that I am a Trekie and a Sci Fi fan. I was born in 1963 and a product of the space race (much more than today's generation, we feel that space is exciting). I was at one of the early Star Trek conventions in 1974 in NYC, I watched the Star Trek cartoon and loved it (Filmways even!), I loved UFO and would try to catch that whenever it was shown in the odd random time slot it would be. Space 1999 comes out and I'm all over it, I'm a big fan, I have my sci fi fix. Than something happenned, I lost interest. Here I am in my pre-teens and I still can't get enough Star Trek or UFO, yet Space 1999 is no big deal. Yeah, I'd still watch it but I hardly remember any of this show. Thats the big thing here, it's a boreing show, period. The origins are exciting, the moon is blown off on its own and there are people living there! Wow that's incredible. OK now what? Well, after that reality sets in and even a pre teen sees that the people don't survive week after week like that. And what was the point after that anyway, the show had no point. I could go on but I'm sure there are those who worship this show. Like I said, I grew up watching Space 1999 and so I feel I can be critical of it. The last straw was seeing that an episode was picked for MST3K. Thats the last straw, Space 1999 is lame. Big money aside, if the show has no endgame it gets old fast. I guess the endgame was they got home, but from what I remember the Earth sucked so I don't even think they wanted to go back, nor did I stay around to find out.
I've wanted this for years........2006-11-03
I take it to work and watch an episode every day while I eat my lunch. I love it.

The word classic can readily be applied to the story of what became known as the Scopes Monkey Trial, which led to the Broadway hit that has now been filmed for the third time. With Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott playing adversarial attorneys, this period piece deals in ideas and ideals in a masterful courtroom drama.
In 1925, a schoolteacher is arrested for teaching Darwinism in the community of Hillsboro, where such scientific refutations of the Bible are illegal. Scott plays prosecutor Matthew Brady (based on politician Williams Jennings Bryan), bringing majesty and tragedy to a character many would find repugnant, as he prophetically bemoans a society moving "from love of God to love of self." Jack Lemmon plays attorney Henry Drummond (based on the legendary Clarence Darrow) and brings his trademark portrayal of the "little guy" to a man determined to protect a citizen's basic right to freedom of thought, proclaiming, "An idea is a greater monument to God than a cathedral." The wonderful supporting cast, including Beau Bridges, Piper Laurie, and John Cullum, all demonstrate their love of a multilayered drama filled with conundrums of faith and contradictions of philosophy. Veteran director Daniel Petrie helms with little flash, but his production offers so many concepts and emotions that the high points of drama remain with the viewer after the film is over. --Lloyd Chesley
