Part of growing up is discovering something that inspires a true passion within and allowing that passion to guide one's actions and choices. The process of self-discovery isn't easy, and when 15-year-old Patrick McCardle (High School Musical's Zac Efron) realizes that playing baseball is more his father's dream than his own, it's an unlikely friendship with old man Houston Jones (Bill Cobbs), a recluse and horse trainer, that inspires Patrick's newfound passion for the exciting world of horse jumping. Patrick and his father (William R. Moses) clash over Patrick's decision to give up baseball and spend time training for the Derby Cup race with Houston, but eventually Patrick and his father come to a mutual understanding and gain a whole new sense of respect for one another as they begin to really talk about and listen to each other's dreams and desires. The road to becoming a derby rider is difficult, but as Houston and Patrick work together, the two share dreams and disappointments and become incredibly close. In the end, Houston, a most unlikely role model, winds up having a profoundly positive impact on Patrick's life both on and off the racetrack. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Pleasant family film.......2007-08-10
15-year old Patrick (Zac Efron) is new in town and has problems: He can't seem to please his jock father (William R. Moses) and he runs afoul of Randy, the town bully, when both boys are attracted to the same pretty girl. Patrick's only friend is one-time horse trainer and long-time alcoholic, Houston Jones (Bill Cobbs), who sees something special in the boy. Houston gives him a horse and trains him to ride in the State Steeplechase Cup race, but Randy, the reigning champ, decides to make Patrick's life miserable.
This low-budget but pleasant 2005 film was never shown in theatres, but has been released on DVD following Zac Efron's mega-successes in High School Musical (Encore Edition) and Hairspray. There's no denying Efron's Tiger Beat-cuteness, and he does a fine job in an undemanding role, but if you want to see a real actor, take a look at Bill Cobbs. He's been playing small character parts in TV and movies for years, but this time he's the star and absolutely owns the screen. His craggy face and gravelly voice masterfully express the only real emotion in the film and he's a pleasure to watch.
The story plays like an After School Special; all obstacles are easily overcome - the kid goes from non-rider to race winner, bonds with his father, and gets the girl - all in a matter of weeks. Adults may find it predictable and a bit bland, but the wholesome message about finding your passion and working hard for it makes "The Derby Stallion" just right for family viewing.
Wonderful Movie.......2007-07-12
Our granddaughter is 6 years old, and loves anything to do with horses. She has watched this movie many, many times. Its a great story for the family also.
Great Family Film!.......2007-06-29
I was encouraged to purchase this DVD by my fifteen-year-old sister, she's been a big fan of Zac Efron's from "High School Musical". She was not disappointed - we both loved it (plus Zac is really cute)! It's a sweet story and has a lot of positive messages. What a pleasure to sit down and see a nice family film again... it's a rarity. Enjoy!
Wins Our Derby.......2007-06-25
With all the junk out there, it's nice to watch a movie with such positive values and one which can be shared with the whole family. Zac Efron is endearing -- it's not surprising he has soared to stardom in "High School Musical." And Bill Cobbs as the wise old horseman is great. I loved the mentor chemistry between them. There is a lot to like in this movie and I recommend it heartily.
Not what I was hoping for..........2007-06-24
The Derby Stallion could have been done alot better. It appeared to be a very low budget film. Its about this boy who decides he wants to ride steeplechase and convinces his parents to allow him to. The riding was very sloppy and some of the sences of him first riding were un realistic and alot of it was put into slow motion, like when he was first learning to jump. The two horses that played in the movie were also two completley different colors. The movie idea was good, but they could have spent more time on teaching the actor to ride and handle horses instead of what appeared to be a very rushed movie. Not a good choice for people who know a thing or two about horses.

If everyone in high government office saw The Boys of Baraka, who knows what kind of positive change it might inspire? From this remarkable documentary about hope and second chances, the message is clear: The poorest, most violent, undesirable neighborhoods in America are a breeding ground for hopelessness and despair, and there's a solution if only we'd give it a good fighting chance. The scene is Baltimore, Maryland, in 2002, where 76% of all African American boys living in the inner-city ghetto will never earn a high school diploma. As one adult tells the kids at a Baltimore school, they have three choices: jail, an early death, or graduating high school--and you know she's telling the cold, hard truth. That's when we learn of the Baraka School in Kenya, East Africa, where 20 African American boys (ages 12 and 13) are chosen each year to enter a transformative two-year course of schooling, away from their families in Baltimore. The purpose of the school, in part, is to demonstrate that the toxic environment of Baltimore, and its negative impact on the self-esteem of ghetto residents, can be reversed by removing these boys to Baraka, where a strict regimen of classes and responsibilities has an immediate, if not always permanent, beneficial effect.
We follow several boys on this fascinating journey toward growth and renewal. Devon is an aspiring preacher with musical talent; Montrey is a troublemaker with a bad attitude, who dreams of a career in science; brother Richard and Romesh are both accepted into Baraka, and despite setbacks both flourish in the program. Codirectors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady capture their gradual awakening to a new way of living and a new outlook on life, and then comes bad news: Due to security concerns and regional politics, the Baraka program is suspended, and the boys must return to the bleakness of Baltimore. Have they changed for good? Will they find a way to earn their diplomas and have hope for their futures? The Boys of Baraka offers no easy answers, but in showing us a glimmer of hope against all odds, the film gains depth and power with a conditional happy ending. Uncertainty remains, but so does a palpable sense of achievement and self-improvement that could, on a grander scale of government and societal support, lead to a positive revolution in our school system, which currently offers a depressing shortage of options for our most underprivileged citizens. Without forcing its uplifting message, this exceptional documentary offers proof of a better way, if only enough people would step up and support it. --Jeff Shannon

Heart Wrenching.......2007-09-04
This film is amazing and heart wrenching. I teach high school and I am going to show it to my Peer Counseling kids. It is very interesting and thought provoking.
The Boys of Baraka.......2007-07-25
Film-makers Ewing and Grady offer an intelligent, insightful look at the devastating realities of life in the crime-ridden ghettoes of Baltimore, a city where only one-quarter of young black men will ever graduate high school--and most, as one counselor grimly reminds prospective applicants, will wind up in jail or dead. "Baraka" takes us into the school hallways and homes of its three principal subjects, and features poignant one-on-one interviews with teachers, family members, and the boys themselves, whose honesty about the circumstances of their lives butt against their hopes and dreams. The Baraka School may be a safe haven from the streets, but it has its own hardships, too. Join these "Boys" on a compelling and inspirational journey.
Inspirational.......2007-05-13
Inspirational movie about the inner strength all of us have. Everybody deserves a chance! and this movie reflects that belief
It makes you think..... and it makes you want to cry........2007-04-09
This is an excellent documentary in regards to multicultural, poverty, and urban/inner-city issues. This is a great depiction of how a person's environment can strongly affect their future success. Basically, this movie is about a group of African American boys who live in the worst parts of Baltimore living in crime and drug infested neighborhoods and are given a chance to go to a boarding school in Africa. Its amazing how the film shows the change in all of the boys throughout the movie.
At the start while they're living in Baltimore, many of them are very aggressive and have very low self-esteem covered up by acting out behavior. Their role models in their neighborhoods are mostly drug dealers and gang members. The movie stated that 76% of African American youth in Baltimore never graduate high school. By watching this film, one can see why. Their schools are in chaos due to the fact that what behavior works in the Ghetto doesnt work in the education system. Their enviroments at home are not preparing them for educational success. Also, the government ignores the problems of the inner-city schools.
About the boys evolving... after about four months in the new school away from their bad neighborhoods, any viewer can see the positive change in them. They're respectful, are less aggressive, believe in themselves, and are just..... wonderful boys. They seem like the boy next door. Someone who can become anything and someone who you would trust to take any where. It makes you feel good to see that positive transformation in these deserving youth that have not been given a fair chance in our society. It makes you want to cry... but for good reasons.
After the boys finish their first year at the school, the boys return home for Summer break. They all come home in good spirits and dont seem to instantly fall back into the negativity.... their whole lives have become... the Baraka school. Their happy to see family... however you can look in their eyes and see that they miss that safe and positive environment of Africa. There was one scene in which one of the boys was sitting on the stairs of his house surrounded by his neighborhood. The people around him were cussing, becoming aggressive and you could see in his eyes the fear and uncomfortablness. You can also see in his eyes that he now knows that the whole world isnt like that..... thanks to the Baraka school. He now knows the world does offer better and has better chances.
Now the heart-breaking part..... due to overseas violence after 9-11 the Baraka school has to close down and the kids are abandoned by the system... again. I wont tell you what happens after that-- you'll have to watch the movie to see. I hate reviewers who tell everything about a movie. But I'll say one thing.... it will make you want to cry. Excellent documentary!!!!
Five stars for the kids..........2007-02-05
The youth in this touching documentary were an unusually intelligent and courageous group of kids. I give this work five stars for them - but not for the system, which abandoned them just when they were at the point of making an emotional, educational and cultural breakthrough on the way to exceptional lives beyond the ghetto. What I didn't understand was why the Baraka project had no alternatives for these kids. Since they had the model down, why not simply move the school to another location, appealing to a Bill Gates - a Bill Cosby, Sidney Poitier, Oprah, Steve Jobs, etc. - to help set it up somewhere else? How in the heck could all these so-called "philanthropists" - and the school staff itself - abandon these kids? Actually, I do not think this was an inspiring film. It was horribly disappointing because of the adults who failed the children.

fantastic 3D, and not a bad movie too.......2007-03-29
I already had this movie on DVD but the normal red/blue glasses 3D version - it was really hard on the eyes. Being a 3D fan and reading the other reviews here which mentioned the 3D quality was fantastic, I just had to give it a try. I'm glad I did too. The 3D quality is fantastic.
I really only wanted to post here for one reason though and that was to mention a technical issue for PAL users which I came across which might be a stumbling block for some people. The DVD uses shutter glasses to alternate between different fields of a frame. On the first DVD player I tried (my main one), it only outputs the video in PAL doing a realtime conversion from NTSC to PAL. Since NTSC was 60 fields/second and PAL 50 fields/second, the 3D effect is lost totally and it becomes a normal 2D movie. It wasn't until I played it on my other player which I set explicitly to play back in either NTSC or PAL60 did the 3D kick in. The movie has a test section on the DVD and if you can only see either the left or right (I saw the left only) then that is the reason. Switch your DVD player to either NTSC or PAL60 and see 3D in perfection!!!
Spy Kids 3-D GAME OVER ROCKS!!!!.......2006-12-11
I just noticed that Carmen has dissapeared inside a game called"Game Over" and trapped within Level 4 by The Toymaker. Her 12 year old brother Juni came in to rescue her.But the coolest part is Carmen big claw(I'ts robot like and the metal is pink:It gone tons of cool pink wires and tubes) came out of the T.V! I's Mad Cool! Plus, Alexa Vega sings this video game like song is called:"Game Over" I got the lyrics! Here's how it goes:
Toymaker:Game Over. There are no rules in this game, except win at any costs.
(Guitar Intro)
Alexa:The Time has Come, once and for all. You met'your match, you will fall. This little game we play is gonna break us down, only one of us can wear the crown.I'ts not easy as you thought it be' when it's down to you versus me.
(Bridge) I play rough,I don't need to try, You like to play mean but the score never lies.
(Chorus)Game Over,Game Over,Game Over, for now
Winning the game the only rule allowed No moral up, or cheers from the crowed. When the game began you never thought you lose' but you're time is up I play to bruise Look around you find you lost you're tried you're best but you ran ou of steam
(Bridge)Iplay rough,I don't need to try,You like to play mean but the score never lies.
You're all out of wishes kiss you're dreams goodbye ends the same It's not whether you woin or lose it's(spoken)how you play the game
(Chorus)Game Over,Game Over,Game Over,for now

(Chorus)Game Over,Game Over,Game Over,Game Over, for now.

Do you like it? I hope you do.This Spy KIds 3-D Game Over Movie Rocks!
Movie O.K., 3-D Excellent!.......2006-02-25
I was never a fan of Spy Kids 3D as a movie, but the quality of the 3D (If you have HQFS) is amazing. Fantastic colors and the images do pop out quite nicely. Recomended for anyone with a High Quality Field Sequencial viewing system.
High quality 3-D, poor DVD authoring.......2005-09-28
Finally, a major studio film released in HQFS (High Quality Field Sequential)! HQFS uses electronic shutter glasses instead of inferior red-blue anaglyph. The result is an outstanding picture. The 3-D is great, combining live action and CGI for terrific depth. This is how movies should be made!
Unfortunately, the HQFS release is just plain shoddy. The anamorphic 1.85:1 film was squeezed on the disc in 4:3 full frame television format making everything look too skinny. There is no way to play it on a regular 4:3 television in letterbox format as is normally done with widescreen films. It should play fine on a new widescreen 16:9 set though.
In addition, the disc strangely includes none of the bonus features found on the 2-D and 3-D anaglyph DVD releases. Why? It would have cost no more to include them, and considering that the HQFS version retails for 50% more than the others is really hard to understand.
The producers of this disc are to be congratulated for making this movie available to the small, but growing number of home 3-D video enthusiasts, but should really have done a better job.

Return to Sanity.......2001-11-15
Being a former "Dennis" back in the 40`s, I was so happy to see Dennis wearing a waist holster with a 6-shooter. Well done Hollywood! My point being, we knew the difference between fantasy and reality. We had good upbringing. We could even point our finger and say "bang" and not worry about "zero tolerance". We`ve got to get our sanity back. Children need fantasies.

i never saw the 1st, but this is kidna funny about Dennis that had neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and Mr. Wilson wants to move cuz he cant take the pranks of Dennis anymore. But Dennis feels sad and will miss them and he must try to get them back.
Dennis the Menace Strikes Again.......2000-09-08
As sequels go, this movie's approach to Dennis is very different than the first one. This is a very appealing movie, but the only actor I wasn't impressed with was Justin Cooper as Dennis. They make references in the movie about him being "seven and a half, almost eight",while the previous movie and the comics clearly state that he is 5. Cooper has a very raspy, ultimately annoying voice,so much that I was finding myself rewinding the tape and replaying it,concentrating harder just to understand what he was saying! Don Rickles, Betty White, and George Kennedy steal the show, with their charming performances as Mr. Wilson, Mrs. Wilson, and Dennis' Grandpa. There is a ridiculous, yet painstakingly hilarious scene where Grandpa and Mr. Wilson have a dance contest, just the two of them, with "Play That Funky Music" playing in the background. This movie is very entertaining, but it has its weak points, as most movies these days do.The actors aren't "extremely fake", nor is this movie "pointless", as a certain reviewer so kindly pointed out.Don Rickles has been in acting for at least forty years,Betty White, for at least 30, and George Kennedy is an academy-award winning actor, with a long-running, successful career,as well. Even the disappointing Dennis(who doesn't hold a candle to Mason Gamble)has had several credits as well(Full House, Liar Liar). A good movie worth seeing.

Description
Five troubled teenagers choose a bankrupt amusement park to pursue a dark fantasy. Fueled by booze, drugs and unspoken tensions between them, the friends wander aimlessly through the silent midway in search of a notorious teen-friendly security guard. The Guard reluctantly allows them to stay, but demands a very private fee from one of them. The angst-ridden youths take revenge on the guard and lock him in one of the rides. They turn on the power and the silent park soon comes to brilliant life with glaring lights, loud music and the furious motion of the attractions. Their gaiety and joy are short-lived, however. In their midst a darker purpose lurks: a suicide pact confronts them with a choice between death and their tortured lives. Each path holds its terrors. Whatever the choice, their lives will bear the mark forever.

A depressing movie.......2005-10-06
In an altered state of mind, is the only way to understand this movie, and then when you do, its so sad, and you cry for days. Puts you in a depressing state.
The movie is about some girl and her boyfriend wanting to commit a mass suicide because she didnt want to bring her baby into this world . . . so they go to the old amusement park
thats my review, i didnt want to give the movie away :)
This Movie sucks.......2005-05-25
Now your problay wondering why i put 1 star on their
and the put "THIS MOVIE SUCKS".Well that's because
it has only 1 good scene in their that's when that kid
with the spikey red hair gets his revenge on the pedofile
security guard. This movie really has no plot,no story
they really don't tell what are the story behind these
5 troubled teenagers. And i think whoever made this movie
needs to go back to college because he has no idea how to make
a film in my opinon. And i would only reccomend this movie
to (...),lesbians,pedofiles,troubled teens,adults
or canadians
Good concept, good acting but, poor film........2003-10-24
This film could have been so much more than what it was. Though the acting was surprisingly good, it was way too slow for my tastes. The acting is why this movie got a 3 and not a 1...glad I rented instead of buying it.
Major props to the young actors.
More on aimless youth.......2003-07-21
Another entry in the aimless youth category, Rollercoaster is the story of five young teens, who break into a deserted amusement park. They walk around, drink booze, smoke pot, and are just generally upset with the world. However, two of these kids have an agenda. They plan to kill themselves at the end of the day, jumping from the top of a rollercoaster. What makes this movie so compelling to watch are the excellent performances from the entire cast, and the ending is quite startling. The actual DVD has no special features to speak of except being widescreen and you can watch the trailer. I would recommend this to anyone who likes (or is affected by) the films of Larry Clark (Kids or Bully). Watch out for the park security guard!

Rascals, Kids and more.......2007-08-13
LUM AND ABNER were owners of the Jot 'em Down Store, in the fictional rural town of Pine Ridge, Arkansas. In its heyday, this popular radio show (which aired from 1932 to '54) received 1.5 million pieces of fan mail a week-- more than any other sit-com. L & A were also stars of seven movies in the 1940s, four of which are here.
THE EAST SIDE KIDS began as the Dead End Kids, a name derived from the stage play, "Dead End." In 1937, Samuel Goldwyn turned "Dead End" into a movie starring the original Broadway performers. After seven Goldwyn films (and a few at UNIVERSAL as the "Little Tough Guys"), the Dead Enders moved to MONOGRAM PICTURES under the name EAST SIDE KIDS. The titles in this collection are from those early MONOGRAM days. Later the ensemble would be known as THE BOWERY BOYS. Altogether, this successful series lasted 20 years, ending when the "boys" were all approaching middle-age.
OUR GANG had the longest theatrical run of any "juvenile" series, spanning the silent era (1922) into the 1950s. As the kids grew up, they were replaced with younger actors. Several Our Gang alumni went on to film careers as teens and adults. The majority of "Gang" shorts in this set were directed by Robert McGowan, for HAL ROACH STUDIOS. In 1938, Roach sold the franchise to MGM. The original 80 shorts made prior to this changeover were eventually syndicated to television under the name LITTLE RASCALS.

Pride of the Bowery.......2005-10-07
What a treat to revisit the things I grew up with. This is timeless comedy that still brings a laugh. As everyone knows, laughter is the best medicine.
A Weak Entry In The Series.......2003-06-15
Pride Of The Bowery finds the Eastside Kids at a CCC camp with a bunch of other "kids".
Muggs (Leo Gorcey) can't seem to keep out of trouble in this film.
The plot is thin, the acting atrocious, the production values almost non-existant.
Best for fans of the Eastside Kids.
Too Bad!.......2002-11-20
I completely agree with the other reviewer's opinion this edition stinks! It's ashame the East Side Kids series doesn't get better treatment. I understand these films are pretty much considered bottom of the barrel poverty row entertainment whose appeal to modern day audiences is extremely limited at best, but c'mon if your gonna take the time to release the stuff at all at least make sure it's watchable. The antics of Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall and the boys have a certain charm that deserves to be remembered in a better form than this! If you've never checked out or even heard of the East Side Kids before do yourself a favor and look them up, trashy teen exploitation from a time long ago, corny yet hip (I guess for it's day?!), the 30's and 40's equivalent of today's Road trip and American Pie type teen flix (minus the sex of course!). Let's hope these pics get released in better form some day!
BEWARE of this Alpha Video DVD, it is BAD!.......2002-08-01
I can not tell you much about the movie, the Gotham Distributors/ Alpha Video DVD is so bad that I had to stop it 10 minutes in and force the store to accept the return of an open DVD.
The AUDIO is DISTORDED, making it very hard to understand Leo Gorcey's humorous banter.
The VIDEO is WASHED OUT so that you can not see their faces.
The film print they used was also splicy, but that would have been tolerable if you could see & hear the movie. Wait until someone like Platinum, Front Row, Brentwood, or Goodtimes releases this public domain title.
A joyless B movie.......2001-09-04
This undistinguished effort (which seems like a promotion for Franklin Roosevelt's CCC camps of that time) is very disliked by most of today's film historians and critics. Though not a total turkey, it's still very slow-paced and, like the majority of the Bowery Boys/East Side Kids films, is badly dated. If there is a message in this movie, it gets lost in uninspired, forced humor, uneven scripting, and generally unappealling performances.

Dead Cat.......2005-04-29
Whereas Point of No Return was basically La Femme re-heated and served covered in ketchup, this piece of junk is LFN sliced and diced and made into a horrible stir-fry. Really bad foreign flick, at several points it's college-level filmmaking... at its worst!
Black Cat - the terrible.......2002-07-22
This is one of the worst movies I have seen. Forget buying this DVD - even renting it is waste of money and time. Poor direction with equally poor plot and unthinkable dubbing. My question is why do people produce movies like this?
Disappointing..........2002-01-11
This is a far inferior Hong Kong re-make of La Femme Nikita in which Jade Leung plays "Black Cat", a young drifter who is trained as an assassin after being taken into a secret organization. Leung is decent in her first role, but plays the part mostly through facial expressions - there aren't a lot of lines for her. Simon Yam, who is always fun to watch, plays her boss. Expect a lot of Hong Kong style action, with over the top violence and brutal fights. Unfortunately, the acting by the Caucasian cast is absolutely dreadful and seriously detracts from the overall movie. Pretty mediocre movie in the long run.
Did you like La Femme Nakita?.......2001-06-30
This is the best in a series of Hong Kong attempts to [emulate] La Femme Nakita (titles of others are escaping me). Don't let this turn you off if you are thinking this is going to be like that horrible Hollywood Bridget Fonda vehicle- Hong Kong will always do it better. I have friends that say this is better than the original, but I wouldn't go that far. I believe this is Jade Leung's first major role and she is great. She is not only beautiful, but can act. She makes this movie. In fact they made a sequel of this film due to it's popularity in HK.
Jade plays a Chinese-American who gets in a scrap at a truck stop and accidently kills a cop. She is then killed by assasins, or is she. The CIA has actually taken her, put a chip in her to enhance her physical prowess, and now she is an assasin for them. She falls in love along the way and ...
The funny thing about this movie is that I think it was filmed entirely over seas, but the first half is suppossed to take place in the US. So the entire first half is in English, even parts where the story is in HK are in English. Otherwise the usual weird/absurd subtitle translations are in effect. Overall DVD quality is very good.
