Ranked at No. 30 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 all-time greatest American films, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a genuine masterpiece that was, ironically, a box-office failure when released in 1948. At that time audiences didn't accept Humphrey Bogart in a role that was intentionally unappealing, but time has proven this to be one of Bogart's very best performances. It's a grand adventure and a superior character study built around the timeless themes of greed and moral corruption. As adapted by writer-director John Huston (from a novel by enigmatic author B. Traven) it became a definitive treatment of fate and futility in the obsessive pursuit of wealth. Bogart plays Fred C. Dobbs, a down-and-out wage-worker in Mexico who stakes his meager earnings on a gold-prospecting expedition to the Sierra mountains. He's joined by a grizzled old prospector (Walter Huston, the director's father) and a young, no-nonsense partner (Tim Holt), and when they strike a rich vein of gold, the movie becomes an observant study of wretched human behavior. Bogart is fiercely intense as his character grows increasingly paranoid and violent; Huston offers a compelling contrast as a weathered miner who's seen how gold can turn men into monsters.

From its lively opening scenes (featuring young Robert Blake as a boy selling lottery tickets) to its final, devastating image of fateful irony, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre tells an unforgettable story of tragedy and truth. With dialogue that has been etched into the cultural consciousness (who can forget the Mexican bandit who snarls "I don't have to show you any stinking badges!") and well-earned Oscars for John and Walter Huston, this is an American classic that still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Great acting, but predictable story.......2007-09-01

Having had good luck lately with Humphrey Bogart movies, and seeing this in looked like a good old fashioned adventure and bruised elbow movie, I thought I would check it out.

The movie starts out pretty interesting with Humphrey Bogart and his co-star playing down and out Gringos in post-revolutionary Mexico, mostly reduced to begging from other Americans and taking odd jobs (and getting taken advantage of in the process). Then they met an old prospector, and decide to go up in the mountains and look for gold.

It was at this point that I realized where this story was going, and realized I had heard this story a few times before. It's one of the oldest stories in the world: a few good men strike it rich, and then, in spite of themselves, their greed takes over and suddenly their at each other's throats. We've all heard variations of this story in many different movies, books, and fables. It is the kind of story that makes a good 15 minute Sunday School lesson for children, but stretched out over a 2 1/2 hour movie it gets old real fast.

And if it's not obvious enough to you what is going to happen, there's plenty of foreshadowing going on. The old prospector warns them ahead of time what gold does to men. Humphrey Bogart and his friend swear vehemently they will never let that happen to them which, to the viewer with any brains at all, is simply foreshadowing that they of course will become caught up in the gold craze.

From that point on the last two hours of the movie is a case of: "I know where this is going, now I just have to wait for it to get there" as the relationships among the three men slowly deteriorate after they strike it rich.

Fortunately there are a few complications thrown in along the way. For example a fourth man shows up and demands to take part in the gold digging expedition. And then all four men end up getting caught in the cross fire between the federales and the bandidos.

I didn't know it until I was watching it, but it turns out this movie is where the (slightly misquoted) famous line: "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!" comes from. I always used to wonder what everyone was talking about when they referenced that line. Another one of life's mysteries solved.

But then the story returns to the same old children's fable about 3 men fighting among themselves because of the treasure they found.

The acting and directing in this movie is all top notch. But the story was slightly too predictable for my taste.

4 out of 5 stars Not a fun movie, but a must see........2007-07-25

This movie isn't an action movie, it's a drama. I happen to love dramas as much as action movies, but part of me wanted just a little more action in this movie.
The acting is amazing and the story draws you in, but you don't have anyone to root for and you find yourself just watching things unfold without any emotional attachment.
That said when it is all said and done; this is a darn good movie. At the end when everything comes full circle the journey was worth it, but you just can't help but feel like you should have had more fun watching it.

5 out of 5 stars SIERRA MADRE BOGART.......2007-06-27

4 out of 5 stars Brings back old memories.......2007-05-07

What a treat to see this old war horse. As was typical of this period the acting was a little over the top, especially Bogart but was entertaining nonetheless. Has some really good extras...well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest movies of all time..........2007-05-03

I can't tell you how many times I've watched this movie, and I can't tell you how many more times I will watch it. If movies were food, this movie would be a first class 9 course meal at the best 5 star restaurant in town. If you have never seen this movie, you have missed out on a rare glimpse into GOLD FEVER. You think it can't happen to you...better men have thought it and died. Watch men trade their souls for Gold, and see what happens to the Godless. Truely a work of art, everyone should own.

Still the tightest, sharpest, and most cynical of Hollywood's official deathless classics, bracingly tough even by post-Tarantino standards. Humphrey Bogart is Dashiell Hammett's definitive private eye, Sam Spade, struggling to keep his hard-boiled cool as the double-crosses pile up around his ankles. The plot, which dances all around the stolen Middle Eastern statuette of the title, is too baroque to try to follow, and it doesn't make a bit of difference. The dialogue, much of it lifted straight from Hammett, is delivered with whip-crack speed and sneering ferocity, as Bogie faces off against Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet, fends off the duplicitous advances of Mary Astor, and roughs up a cringing "gunsel" played by Elisha Cook Jr. It's an action movie of sorts, at least by implication: the characters always seem keyed up, right on the verge of erupting into violence. This is a turning-point picture in several respects: John Huston (The African Queen) made his directorial debut here in 1941, and Bogart, who had mostly played bad guys, was a last-minute substitution for George Raft, who must have been kicking himself for years afterward. This is the role that made Bogart a star and established his trend-setting (and still influential) antihero persona. --David Chute

Sam Spade is caught in a frantic search for the jeweled falcon of Malta and his partner's killer. His pursuit leads him to a group of desperate individuals who also want the bird.

5 out of 5 stars superb!.......2007-08-30

This movie was supposed to be simlar to "The Big Sleep". Since I enjoyed "The Big Sleep" so much, I thought I'd give this one a try.

On the surface, this movie seems almost identical to "The Big Sleep". Both are classic hard boiled private detective movies. Both star Humphry Bogart. Both take place in California. And both movies even create a similar atmosphere.

Indeed the similarities between these movies do seem to outway the differences, but there are some differences. For example "The Maltese Falcon" is not about the adventures of Philip Marlow, but of Sam Spade, a different private detective from a different series of books. I've not read any of Sam Spade's books, but the general consensus among book reviewers seems to be that Raymond Chandler (the author of the Philip Marlow series) is much superior.

That, perhaps added to the fact that this film has no William Faulkner or Leigh Brackett credited on the screen play might account for the fact that the dialogue isn't as near as good as "The Big Sleep". But dialogue aside, I actually enjoyed the general story of "The Maltese Falcon" more.

The premise of "The Maltese Falcon" itself is based on a legend about the knights templars (just like another more recent popular novel/movie combination you may have heard of.) Several different people are interested in recovering the lost Templar treasure of the maltese falcon. There are several different characters with conflicting motives, and lots of betrayals and changing alliances. It requires a certain amount of close attention to keep track of everything, but if you watch closely, everything makes perfect sense in the end. Unlike "The Big Sleep", there are no big plot holes in this movie (or at least I didn't catch any. If someone out there has a quick eye, there welcome to point some out to me).

And there are a couple great shockers at the end. One of the them I saw coming, the other one took me by surprise. But both of them make perfect sense once you think about it.

The lighting and cinematography are superior in this movie as well, although I'm almost hesistant to bring that up because it makes it sound like I'm discussing a classic movie. From my point of view this was a really fun movie that just happens to be a classic. Like "The Big Sleep", it can hold its own against any of Hollywood's modern thrillers today.

Finally, this movie is worth seeing if for no other reason than it has a great performance by Peter Lorre. Peter Lorre was the Austrian-Hungarian actor who was famous as a great character actor. You might be thinking you don't know who he is, but actually you probably do. He usually plays the creepy characters in old movies. He's been parodied a million times by a million different people.

5 out of 5 stars The Maltese Falcon 1941 (Three-Disc Collector's Edition).......2007-08-12

A gallery of High-living lowlifes will stopp at nothing to get their sweaty hands on a jewel-encrusted falcon . Detective Sam Spade (Humprey Bogart 1899 - 1957 ) wants to find out why -and who would take the fall of his partner's murder . An all-star casting ( including Sydney Greenstreet 1879- 1954 , Peter Lorre 1904-1964, Elisha Cook ,Jr 1903-1995 , Mary Ashtor 1906- 1987) joins Bogart in this cracking mystery masterwork written for the screen (from Dashiell Hammett's (1894-1961) novel) and directed by John Houston (1906 - 1987). This nominee for 3 academy awards (1941) Captulted Bogart to stardome and lauched Huston's directional career all with a bird and bang ! . Warner Brothers has one of the greatest film catalogs of any studio; yet they don't appear to take their DVD issues very seriously. Who on earth would put "Goodfellas" on two sides of a disc? or not release the "Director's Cut" version of "Eyes Wide Shut" (imagine the added revenue if they had)? or almost never digitally enhance the audio or visual transfer or provide any significant extras? Compared to the deluxe packages that Universal, Criterion, are a peculiar desecration of a vaunted film legacy.
Case in point: "The Maltese Falcon". Arguably the greatest detective film ever made, Warners at least releases it with a decent video transfer. Unfortunately, the audio synchronizing is off during the last 15 minutes of the movie (by a second but it's still noticable) and I wasn't able to access all the people on the "Cast and Crew" menual though I enjoyed the "Trailers of Humphrey Bogart" section, it would have been nice if Warners spent the money to create a documentary history of the film the way they did on Universal's "Casablanca" release.

Much ink has been spilt praising "The Maltese Falcon" so I won't go into any panegyrics here. It's just a shame that Warners doesn't take this market seriously enough to put more care into the DVD releases of their finest films. High Quality Transfer . Recommended

5 out of 5 stars Like Vintage Wine.......2007-07-21

A month's salary for a vintage wine is a bargain for many -- but one evening and it's gone. This is a vintage flick -- which can be enjoyed one special night a year for decades to come without losing its bouquet!

Perfect? No! A movie can't be. You must decide which set of weaknesses you accept in a most perfect film. At first I didn't like the combo J. Huston & Co. give us, but "they grow on you." Perhaps that -- which cannot be gauged at first -- is its' greatest strength.

Whatever! For those with a particular palate, this is vintage indeed.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible quality.......2006-01-16

I can't compare this to any other versions, or to a different, longer, and better "cut" as mentioned in other reviews of other editions, but I'll say this -- the sound quality is positively abysmal. Left channel sound comes and goes as it pleases, and actors' voices are so muddy it's difficult to understand plain English. I haven't watched it long enough to find any of the video flaws that others mention, and the way it's going, I may not need to.

Fortunately I didn't waste any money on this. Got it from the library.

Move along folks, move along. Nothing to see here.

2 out of 5 stars You're very wise to get out of it, escape, while you can........2004-09-25

What happened in this film? I couldn't tell you. One of the major downfalls of these films were the lack of quality that was used to transfer this film to DVD. I felt at times that I was watching a very old VHS version of these films. There is even a moment where you get squiggle lines at the top of the screen as if you are watching this film on a rackety VHS player. The fade in's and fade out's were horribly miscalculated. I am always a believer that you should let your character finish his/her line or action before you go to a fade, that way you don't have audience members straining to hear or to catch a final glimpse of what is happening. I am trying really hard to watch some of these older films. They are the backbone to modern cinema ... but can't they be any better. I am still waiting for me to discover that gem. I think that is my mission now. I want to see an older film that is virtually unheard of, but is movie making at its best. Beat the Devil gets one star, while Call it Murder also gets one. That is why this entire pack gets two stars. Addition. Blach! Watch out for these ... they're doozies!!

Grade: ** out of *****

1 out of 5 stars A terrible example of DVD technology........2001-11-01

The manufacturer of this DVD did not make any effort to digitally re-master the source material. Imagine an old vacuum-tube TV set with just a piece of aluminum foil for an antenna, then try to imagine viewing this movie via on-air broadcast from a TV station 100 miles away. Can you immagine that? Good! You'd have better picture quality in that scenario than you have from this DVD. Sound on "Call It Murder" is delayed by a second or so, making you wonder just who in the picture is doing the talking. Add to that the loud background hiss coming from your speakers the whole time. This DVD is trash. Even if you were given this DVD for free, you'd want to throw it away. Don't waste your money!

1 out of 5 stars What a shame and a waste. . ........2001-01-04

As valuable as many of our "heritage films" have proven themselves to be, it's a real crime to allow a second (or in this case, THIRD) rate video producer to get their hands on them.

Both "Midnight" (later released as "Call it Murder") and "Beat the Devil" as decent films in their own right, but this compilation DVD just needs to be burned, or at least banned. Compilations like this one are just another reason our appreciation of older films is in decay. I wouldn't drive a 58 Corvette if it were in this condition, I'm certainly not going to recommend such poor quality DVD reproductions of great movies.

The video is aweful. The audio lags. Practically no special features.

I STRONGLY URGE YOU NOT TO BUY THIS DVD OR ANY BY THE SAME COMPANY-

1 out of 5 stars More Madacy trash..........2000-03-03

Madacy has done it again...taken what could have been decent DVD's and turned them into trash. The video transfer from film is very poor, but the worst is the audio. Madacy has a history of producing low-cost low-quality legacy DVD's, just look at other reviews of Madacy titles (check out Charlie Chaplin DVD's).

The film opens on a band playing in a town square. Four men are on a search for a valuable mineral in Africa (each a different nationality). A hardware failure prevents the scheduled departure of the ship. There is a trip to a country inn. This fills in spots. Billy says the wealth of Africa is still there for the taking. Harry's wife boasts, and reveals her husband's secret plans to Billy. There is a comic scene when they push an old car down the road.

The ship finally departs with all aboard. We learn the truth about the Chelms and his false front. Chelms has learned what the group is planning. Will he talk? There are events to fill out the time of this film. There is an assault that turns comic after they believe a person is crazy. Then there is an unplanned lifeboat drill at night. Armed men on horseback show up on the beach to arrest them. Ahmed questions them, and Billy figures out a way to get them released. "Will you take a check?" Clayton of Scotland Yard catches up to them. There is a funny surprise at the end.

Some say this was created as a parody of "The Maltese Falcon". I didn't find it that funny. Could it have been made to create a paper loss to offset income from a successful film?

5 out of 5 stars Bizarre, febrile, wacky and genial film!.......2007-08-02

John Huston and Truman Capote concocted this offbeat and funny satire around the Maltese Flacon. Since its release, became a cult movie and still remains.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greats.......2007-02-12

This movie has a an excellent line-up, Humphrey Bogart, and the great Peter Lorre. This is not a very well known film, but I personally enjoyed every minute of it.
Billy Dannreuther (Bogart) is part of a motley group planning to go to Africa, where a friend can help them illegally claim uranium. But trouble arrives: stuffy Harry Chelm (Edward Underdown) and his very imaginative wife Gwen (Jennifer Jones) arrive, and soon they're flirting with Billy and his sensual wife Maria (Gina Lollabrigida).

Even worse, Gwen's "exaggeration" habit is making the gang distrust Billy, thinking that he's withholding information from them. He isn't, of course. But all the personal plots and distrust come to a boil when everyone boards the ship, and Harry reveals that he knows everything about their uranium plot. Now Billy has to save himself and his friends, without Harry being bumped off...

"Beat the Devil" is an all-around satire -- it mocks grabby criminals, pathological liars, stodgy Brits, romance movies, crime capers, and even second-rate boats ("Of course, the captain is drunk!"). In fact, there's very little about this movie that doesn't poke fun at itself, or at the movies of the time.

And since it was adapted by John Huston and Truman Capote, you know that it's being witty as it makes fun. It languidly builds up in a sunny, ruined city where people plot and flirt, and then starts to boil when they get on board the boat. But even engine failures manage to be entertaining when Harry wrecks the oil pump while trying to fix it.

The cast is skilled in that under-the-radar way: Bogart plays a slightly more offbeat version of his noir characters, and Jennifer Jones is hilarious as the ditzy, chattery English girl. Peter Lorre and Robert Morley are also quite good as Bogie's pals, and Underdown plays the insensitive, straight-arrow dunce perfectly. You'll constantly want to smack him.

2 out of 5 stars Bogart himself called it a "mess.".......2006-12-18

The plot, if you can call it that, concerned a group of six stranded adventurers in an Italian port whose plan is to buy up some East African land that supposed1y contains uranium... Double-crossing quickly becomes the name of the game as Bogart and his fellow conspirators (including Robert Morley, Peter Lorre, Gina Lollobrigida, and a seemingly endless parade of bizarre characters) outdo each other in inspired crazy way...

Bogart, trying desperately to maintain his composure, delivered such priceless lines as: 'I'm only in on this because the doctor told me I needed plenty of money. Without money I become dull, listless, and have trouble with my complexion." But his lines weren't the only offbeat ones... In a room where he's being questioned after being captured, while a firing squad goes about its routine work outside, he is asked straight-faced, "Now tell me, do you really know Rita Hayworth?"

The film is one of those rare items that viewers either seem to love or hate, no middle ground accepted... and declared that only the "phonies" thought it was really funny... Many reviewers thought the whole thing was a tasteless joke and decried the waste of time, talent, and money...

In any case, Bogart gave an immensely satisfying performance in his tongue-in-cheek role and the film itself has now become a regular attraction in Bogart film retrospectives... It is also an excellent example of how much Bogart had matured as an actor, since it is not easy to overcome apparently inept material and still give a performance with some meaning and substance...

4 out of 5 stars Time is a crook.......2006-07-05

You'd think that "Beat the Devil" would be far better known than it is, since it was one of the last movies that Humphrey Bogart did before his untimely death. Maybe that's because Bacall wasn't in it, or maybe it was just too quirky for the masses -- a funny, wry noir-satire, with a gang of rather inept criminals.

Billy Dannreuther (Bogart) is part of a motley group planning to go to Africa, where a friend can help them illegally claim uranium. As for editions, pretty much none of them are "good" per se. They havne't been cleaned up or restored. But the best one I've seen is Diamond Entertainment's, which has a steady picture and soundtrack, and no splices, crackling, or so on. It's slightly fuzzy as for details, but not so that it isn't watchable or enjoyable.

Though not as respected as it deserves, "Beat the Devil" is a little gem of a Bogart movie, with a witty, satirical script and lots of wild twists. Definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Best Detective Movie Ever.......2003-03-11

Yes Virginia, this is the best detective movie of all time. In fact, this is the one that set the gold standard for all detective films. The one that everybody imitates, the one that everybody quotes, the one that made the career of Humphrey Bogart. Its fascinating murder plot is engaging, and the performances by Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet are unforgettable. John Huston’s great direction should also be noted.
This DVD is the sharpest, clearest version I’ve yet seen of “The Maltese Falcon,” and it is quite probably the sharpest and clearest version I ever will see. While there are still plenty of scratches, the image is a wonder to behold.
My only quibble is the comparative lack of extras. While there is a unique “The Trailers of Humphrey Bogart” documentary, “A History of Mystery” Essay, and the amusing “Maltese Falcon” theatrical trailer, a legitimate documentary or a film historian’s commentary would have been appreciated.
