4 out of 5 stars Great Picture Quality. A Must For Fans........2003-01-02

Rhino's DVD release of "The New Three Stooges" cartoons from the 1960s is an absolute must for any Stooge fan.

First of all, this collection contains the first sixteen stooge cartoons: That Little Old Bomb Maker; Woodsmen Bear That Tree; Let's Shoot the Piano Player; Dentist the Menace; Safari So Good; Thimk of Thwim; There Auto Be a Law; That Old Shell Game; Hold That Line; Flycycle Built For Two; Dizzy Doodlers; The Chicken Delivery Boys; Movie Scars; A Bull for Andamo; The Tree Nuts; Tin Horn Dude.

These cartoons do not feature the greatest animation in the world (in fact, the animation makes "Clutch Cargo" look like "Wallace and Gromit"), but they're a must for Stooge fans. Even better than the cartoons are the live action wraparounds by Moe, Larry, and Curly Joe DeRita (who were all looking incredibly old by this point). While the wraparounds are not up the the standard set by the old Columbia shorts, they're still fairly amusing and a Stooge fan's dream.

The picture quality of this release is amazing (at least compared to my muddy old videos). The colour on both the live action and animated segments is incredible, and they're both mostly free of grain. My only complaint is that the opening titles sequence is rather blurry.

On the special features front, there's an interview with supervising producer Lee Orgel, who has some interesting tidbits about the Stooges and some interesting behind-the-scenes facts.

All in all, if you're a Stooge fan, you NEED this collection of cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a QUALITY co. releases these CARTOONS!.......2002-01-12

Was so glad to find these cartoons finally released by a top-rate CO.....RHINO! GREAT cover too! I love these cartoons! Yes they were cheaply done by CAMBRIA and the live-action sequences were not the STOOGES at their BEST BUT they are fun and entertaining! Love the intro/closing and the theme song too!
Nice that they also included everything in complete one-hour episodes.

2 out of 5 stars These Should Be Good Prints.......2001-12-29

I have not seen this DVD, but I can tell you something about the Three Stooges cartoons. Most of them are not very good (which accounts for the only two stars rating), but a few have their moments. For example, in the one where they are explorers in Egypt Moe makes a quip about his "portable Rosetta Stone". That's pretty witty for the Three Stooges!

Some fans my age may anticipate these more than others, and for that a little history is in order. When these 156 cartoons were released in syndication in 1965, the Columbia two-reelers had been released to television 6 years befpre. So we young fans were hungry for any new Stooges product. Not only did the Stooges provide their own voices (unlike Hanna-Barbera's Laurel and Hardy cartoons circa the same period), but there were live action wraparound intros to each cartoon. In color!

Recently those live wraparounds have been released without the cartoons by Good Times, and many ...fans wrote in to say they were horrible. Well, they ain't great but they were never meant to be viewed without the cartoons.

I don't know which of the cartoons will be available in this collection - and if there's a volume one, perhaps there will be a volume 2. And at the promised 113 minutes, there should be pretty many.

These cartoons were available about 14 years ago on video from Nelson Entertainment, who released every cartoon - except one! Maybe this collection will rectify that.

These cartoons originally appeared as The New Three Stooges and they date, not from 1930, as the Amazon blurb says, but 1965. They have long been available on very low budget collections, having somehow fallen early on into the public domain. Most of those prints are very washed out, whereas this Rhino version restores the bright colors of the original cartoons.

Watching them now, many adults may think they're not very good cartoons. However, they filled a unique niche in tv history. When kids shows still had live hosts, the clowns, story ladies and spacemen showed short syndicated cartoons, the most popular being the Popeye theatrical cartoons. However, a close second was the live action theatrical Three Stooges shorts. These cartoons open and close with live action Three Stooges routines (intros and outros) sandwiching each cartoon. Since there were only 39 or 40 live action bits filmed for 156 cartoons, the live action bits repeat. However, each episode allowed the host to play two halves of a live, color Stooges act with a Stooges cartoon sandwiched in the middle. A nearly perfect format.

Take away the live host, however, and it doesn't make sense. This DVD contains one one sided disc, as did Vol. one. Rhino adds no notes or enhancements other than a list of episodes grouped into four shows (shows 5-8). But each show consists of four episodes, each a cartoon sandwich with live action intros and outros. Four episodes (one show) is a lot for kids to watch in one sitting, but showing one episode a day, you really get sixteen cartoons.

The early cartoons also don't relate to the subject of the live acts, but some of the later ones do. For instance, the live "Barbers" act opens episode 31, which segues into the cartoon, "That Was the Wreck That Was". But later (and hopefully Rhino eventually brings out the full series), the same act opens episode 109, "Hairbrained Barbers", where the cartoon echoes the live act. Episode no. 21 in this set, in show six opens with the "Caretakers" live action wraparound, but the cartoon, "Droll Weevil", is actually labelled as episode 143. This may explain why "Caretakers" also opens episode 24 in the same show, when you'd think the wraparounds wouldn't repeat until the 40th show.

These Cambria cartoons were extremely low budget limited animation, however kids will probably enjoy the switch from live action to cartoon and back again. It was produced by Dick Brown, famous for the even more limited animation of Clutch Cargo and Space Angel, and the Stooges voiced themselves. A changing roster of animators were involved with the show, which explains the wide variants in style and quality of the cartoons. Former Disney animator Jack Kinny was involved in storyboarding, and the late Disney- UPA animator, Jacques Rupp supplied layout on some of the later episodes. For those reasons, the cartoon portions got better as the show went along. The third Stooge here is Curly Joe, the fourth to play that role, and I think he's a great addition adding, as he does, a touch of class to the madcap which, as with other 'sixties cartoons, had been toned down in the wake of the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963.

This wasn't the last Stooges cartoon, however. The Three Robonic Stooges, a Hanna- Barbera cartoon on CBS in 1978, portrayed the comic trio as cyborgs. That segment originally launched in a strange live-action Hanna- Barbera show called Skatebirds. All but the high- rated Stooges segment was soon replaced by a much better known and fondly remembered cartoon, "Speed Buggy". Thanks to Rhino for another blast from the past.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2005-12-21

Between vols. 1 and 2, we have 32 of the cartoons. As most fans know, there were 156 of them, and 39 original wrap-arounds. I wonder if the rest will be released on DVD!

Here we have the 2nd volume of The Three Stooges in animation. When it comes to slapstick they did it better than all the rest. At the beginning and end of each cartoon Moe, Larry and Curly Joe appear in classic "wraparounds" (cartoon titles precede live-action wraparounds in parenthesis).

Don't let the price fool you, this is a budget release! How it was listed at $14.95, I don't know! I bought mine directly from Amazon, and it had a price sticker on the cellophane wrapping for $4.99, and the quality shows it! Eight of the cartoons are found on the first Rhino DVD, and with much better picture and sound. The other five are only here, but with even worse picture and sound! Worse yet, all of the wrap-arounds are found on the two Rhino DVD's! Skip this, and get the two Rhino releases titled "Cartoon Classics vols. 1 and 2". Each is about the same price as this rip-off, each is a remastered full-quality release, and there is a link to both of them right here on this product page!!

THE THREE STOOGES: FUNNIEST MOMENTS I Rare Glimpses of Moe, Larry, and Curly Joe in Color These rare glimpses of Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Joe DeRita in color were shot in 1965 as live-action scenes for The New Three Stooges cartoon show, representing the team at the peak of its popularity. While cleaning a musty mansion, they discover a suit of armor that appears to be inhabited, and Moe matches wits with a checker-playing chimp (we won't tell you who wins) as the boys play zany zookeepers. They wreak havoc on a golf course, the open road, a fishing boat, a camping trip, an airport scale, and the beach, and as perplexed paperhangers, foolish photographers, short-tempered chefs, and dim-bulb doctors. 4 out of 5 stars Not bad........2006-01-17

This DVD is not as much a rip-off as other reviewers may suggest. These are not "shorts", but are live-action wrap-arounds for the cartoons they did in 1965. There are 156 cartoons, and 41 wrap-arounds. Obviously, the wrap-arounds were used more than once. The "Kings Of Laughter" DVD is meant as a public-domain "best-of", which includes some of these wrap-arounds. A few of these are available (with the appropriate cartoons) on the two Rhino DVD's with better picture and sound, but all 41 are on this and "Funniest....vol.2" without the cartoons (which are not very good). The picture and sound could be better, but this is a budget, after all!

1 out of 5 stars Only if you've run out of other 3 stooges.......2003-12-23

This DVD by Good Times Home Video has a lot of the same material as in The Three Stooges: Kings of Laughter by the same company. They really shouldn't have tried to cheat customers by doing this.

It is really only for the hardcore 3 stooges fans who have seen absolutely everything else by them. Much of it is pretty sad--only a little bit funny--stuff with recycled routines from earlier moves/shorts. These shorts lack the inspired craziness of some of the earlier movies/shorts had.

Look elsewhere for your 3 stooges fix.

2 out of 5 stars The Three Stooges, Funniest Moments.......2001-07-12

I am a Three Stooges fan but this version didn't even make me snicker. It seems the funny has gone out of them.
