Description
The first of what Luis Buñuel later proclaimed a trilogy (along with The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Phantom of Liberty) about "the search for truth," The Milky Way (La voie lactée) daringly deconstructs contemporary and traditional views on Catholicism with ribald, rambunctious surreality. Two French beggars, present-day pilgrims en route to Spain's holy city of Santiago de Compostela, serve as Buñuel's narrators for an anticlerical history of heresy, told with absurdity and filled with images that rank among Buñuel's most memorable (stigmatic children, crucified nuns) and hilarious (Jesus considering a good shave). A diabolically entertaining look at the mysteries of fanaticism, The Milky Way remains a hotly debated work from cinema's greatest skeptic.

get this film....my favorite scene is when the virgin Mary calls over jesus, after he gives a speech at a dinner, and tells him we're out of wine can you do something. so Bunuel. unlike no other.

The Milky Way (1969)
Dir. Maestro Luis Bunuel
One of best movies that analyzes European Christianity and Catholicism with a Surrealistic microscope. Two allegorical pilgrims on there way to Santiago de Compostela from Paris see 2000 years of Orthodoxy through a series of unrelated vignettes dealing with heresies and anathemia. Blasphemy? Hardly. Sacreligous? Never!
Critical in a loving way? Of course. Get this movie. Pierre Clementi rules as the Destroying Angel!
Extras are minimal with 1 short documentry and 2 interviews, one with a critic who sounds like he didn't get it in the first place.
However, this Criterion DVD is packaged with the class that The Milky Way deserves. Subtitles default in English with overlapping text. Original language: French with a touch of Spanish and Mystical Latin. I see this movie as the natural sequel to Simon of the Desert.
Luis Bunuel, filmmaker, Surrealist Extraordinaire, we'll never see his kind again. Nope. Thank God for him!
Coincidence or not, you decide: the timing for the release of this movie and the Mother Theresa journal?!!!!!

THERE'S SOMETHING HAPPENING HERE, WHAT IT IS AIN'T EXACTLY CLEAR.......2007-01-04
The monster of the Milky Way is of course--no, wait for it. But it's big, really big. Bigger than a Buick. How do we know what's there, with all the gas and dust blocking our view of the galaxy center? "Monster of the Milky Way" explains how. My test for Nova programs is how many times I want to watch them. This episode premiered only a few weeks ago yet I've seen it three times already. There's a lot of thought provoking ideas in this episode, including the fate of the Milky Way and our big galactic neighbor 2.2 million light years away, Mr. Huge Andromeda Galaxy, M31. I don't want to spoil the "plot" of this episode because at its heart it is a detective story, but it follows astronomers as they try to discern just what all that mass at the center of the Milky consists of, and what that means for the future of our galactic neighborhood. This episode is one of the better ones about astronomy. The monster at the heart of the Milky Way and its brethren are the subject of cutting-edge ideas in cosmology these days, and this fresh Nova program takes you right into the current research.

You've Just Got to Duck!.......2006-06-30
The Milky Way is a later sound feature starring the silent comedian Harold Lloyd. It begins with an incompetant milkman (Lloyd) in a very funny scene at a meeting for the company. This man happens to stumble upon some prize fighters one night and agitates them until they attempt to beat him up. Little do they know how nimble he is and the middle-weight champion finds himself with birds circling his head. The fighter's promoter (Adolph Menjou) wants to employ the milkman in order to alter gossip, but he is none too receptive. Later, he gets roped into it anyway and a string of fixed fights and publicity leave the milkman with a massively inflated ego.
Lloyd is astonishingly funny in this film. His silent character is only amplified by the fact that he speaks here. Some silent stars lost something when sound came, but Lloyd seems to have fed on its power. He is truly a bright spot.
Most film collectors know that many films aren't in great condition and are able to look past the fuzzy prints and dull soundtrack to see the film they've been dying to see. This film is easy to love because of the great script and Lloyd's hilarious antics and even moreso by those people who have trained themselves to look past bad prints. For others, it might not be as enjoyable because the quality can be a bit distracting.
Wait for the Collection.......2005-09-16
This will be released as part of the Harold Lloyd set coming out in November. I'm sure we'll see a better looking and sounding print. This promises to be quite a release and may do much to revitalize the reputation of a unique comedy genius.
I watched this film two times the first evening I got a copy; I was a little astonished. As a wacky comedy from that era it's not on the level of The Awful Truth or Bringing Up Baby--it's a notch below--but it's very good and has plenty of imaginative and gut-busting moments. I was roaring through the entire ending, and that's the way it should be with a good comedy.
The aspects that prevent this from being a front-runner are a not-totally-there script, a fun but vaguely awkward performance by Adolphe Menjou as a fight promoter, and some lumpiness to the flow of the proceedings. Screwball comedy, based as it is on generally unbelievable premises and coincidences, requires carefully calibrated velocity and pacing to keep the audience from noticing the unreality of the situations. The best examples have theatrical precedents--Arsenic and Old Lace, in its film incarnation, still feels like a stage play but it works brilliantly because it's relentless. All this movie was missing was more inspired direction.
Still, Lloyd, and much of the cast, are a pleasure, and the fun almost always never stops. A solid four-star with plenty of five-star moments--including one scene where Lloyd plays a sort of boomerang game with his hat.
Awful. Unfunny........2005-05-30
I'm a big Harold Lloyd fan, but this movie is a waste of time. Luckily, I have it recorded from TV. Am now erasing it.
Good movie, but the transfer sucks.......2004-08-27
This is a good Harold Lloyd movie, although not one of his best (but they are all pretty good.) The problem with the DVD is that the quality of the transfer is very bad.
The video quality is poor. It is washed out in places. Contract is bad. Part of the titles are cut off.
The sound quality is absolutely horrible. In many places it shrieks like an old speaker turned up too loud. It was painful to listen to this movie at any other than a very low (i.e. barely make out the words) sound level.
