Similar to the equally excellent Valmont, this version of Jane Austen's classic novel had the misfortune of following a sumptuous big-star version with Gwyneth Paltrow, which was released the summer before. And, just as 1989's Valmont suffered comparisons with Dangerous Liaisons, inevitably these Emmas were held up next to one another.
This delicious Emma concerns a young woman of financial substance (Kate Beckinsale), who fancies herself a matchmaker, especially with shy Miss Harriet Smith (Samantha Morton, who also appears in A&E's Jane Eyre). In Emma's swirling world of social activity and social consciousness, one's position and stature is a constant preoccupation. But to her credit, Emma, albeit a busybody, has compassion for all classes, and for her kindly but hypochondriacal father (Bernard Hepton).
This miniseries is more subtle than the grand theatrical release, is truer to the novel, and gives a richer explanation of the relationship between Emma associates Jane Fairfax (beautiful Olivia Williams of Rushmore) and the duplicitous Frank Churchill (Raymond Coulthard). Of course, at the center, as in all Austen stories, is the romance between the unsuspecting leading lady and an unlikely, but wholly suitable gentleman. In this case, it's Emma and her brother-in-law, the righteous (as played here) Mr. Knightley (Mark Strong). Strong's Mr. Knightley is more reserved, less coy than Jeremy Northam's; he plays Knightley more like Mr. Darcy (the leading man in Austen's Pride and Prejudice, which A&E also offers in a wonderful miniseries). Beckinsale proves to be utterly delightful and in no way should this excellent adaptation be ignored. --N.F. Mendoza

Excellent fare.......2007-09-13
This adaptation was excellent, the cast were well chosen and were able to portray their characters with excellence, maintaining the essence of each as Jane Austin wrote them. The storyline kept to the book, revealing the attitudes of the times and portaying Emma's growth from self consumed adolecent to compassionate young adult.
Emma (A&E, 1997).......2007-08-31
I love this movie because it highlights the relationship between "Emma" and "Mr. Knightley." The actor and actress did a good job of portraying their characters.
A very one dimensional Emma.......2007-07-16
Kate Beckinsale's performance, to me, seemed extremely one dimensional. We certainly see the vanity, but none of the compassion which makes Emma a worthy (albeit immature) hero traveling along her arc. By comparison, Gwenyth Paltrow's performance (within a year) shows us a misguided socialite, who repeatedly displays compassion.
The best example might concern Emma's view of Martin. While Paltrow tells us he is beneath her, she also points out that were he less fortunate (than he is), she would feel honor bound to help him. Kate's Emma, on the other hand, simply despise him for no good reason.
Having watched both features back to back, Beckinsale strike's me as a twin sister of Mrs. Elton, rather than Austin's kind-hearted, but misguided Emma.
I would recommend forgoing this version and taking Paltrow's instead.
Kate has displayed Emma's true personality exactly!.......2007-07-13
I am very pleased with this version of Emma. I am thinking Jane Austin herself would be proud that so much of the original dialog was used. The story followed true to the book much more than I have seen in any other Emma reproduction. If you loved reading Emma (which I believe is Jane's masterpiece), then this will make you smile all the way through it.
Wonderful Version.......2007-06-19
This is my favorite of the Emma movies. Emma, though meddlesome, is so endearing and forgiveable in this version. I think A&E in general does a great job of adapting beloved novels to the small screen. They have also done well with the Hercule Poirot mysteries. In the same way they treated Agatha Christie's words with care, they have done the same for Jane Austen. The supporting characters are all well-done in this movie too. The scenery and costuming is colorful and superb. I am pleased I purchased this, and I am not at all disappointed in the way this story has been presented. This is a terrific version of a great novel.

From Lucy-tormented Hollywood A-listers and bongo-propelled production numbers to archival goodies such as long-lost footage, there is much to love in this collection of all 13 episodes from The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show (also known as The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour). Following I Love Lucy's sixth and final season, these monthly (give or take) specials reunited America with Ricky and Lucy (and Keith Thibodeaux's adorable Little Ricky, still living the country life in Connecticut. The expanded, hour-long format allowed for celebrity guest stars and excursions to far-flung locales, such as Japan and Mexico. Not matter where they go, Lucy can always be counted on to act, in Desi's words, "a little crazy in the head," which is how she winds up masquerading as Ernie Kovacs' chauffeur in "Lucy Meets the Moustache" (an episode making its home-video debut), dangling Milton Berle from a construction crane in "Milton Berle Hides Out at the Ricardos," or sparking a uranium uproar in Las Vegas in "Lucy Hunts Uranium."
A highlight of this set is the first-ever home video release of the uncut version of "Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana," a flashback episode in which Lucy meets Ricky on a "maiden voyage" to Cuba. She also meets future best friend Ethel (Vivian Vance) and her new husband Fred (a toupeed William Frawley), and goes overboard for her first celebrity sighting, Rudy Vallee. Because these episodes do not play as often in syndication, they seem fresher than their endlessly re-run counterparts. They are full of delights for movie, TV, and Lucy buffs, among them, Fred MacMurray getting "Uranium" fever, Maurice Chevalier singing "Yankee Doodle Boy" in the "Mexico" episode, prolific character actor Sid Melton as a bellboy in the "Alaska" episode, and a va-voom Vance decked out as maid and a dance hall girl, respectively, in the "The Celebrity Next Door" and "Milton Berle" episodes. Among this set's prodigious bonus features include 1951 color footage that an audience member surreptitiously filmed, rediscovered scenes that were cut from the original broadcasts, and a filmed presentation to Westinghouse, which sponsored the series. If you don't add this to your library, you have some 'splainin' to do. --Donald Liebenson
Description
The I Love Lucy Hour Shows is a series of hour-long specials that aired from 1957-1960 that continued the I Love Lucy saga. Housewife Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) lives in Westport Connecticut, with her bandleader husband, Ricky ( real-life husband Desi Arnaz,) and their son, Ricky Jr. (Keith Theibodeaux.) Always nearby are the couple's best friends Fred and Ethel Mertz (William Frawley and Vivian Vance.) Ricky's job as an entertainer requires him to travel a lot. As a result, he often takes Lucy, little Ricky, and the Mertzes with him to such far-off places as Japan and Mexico. Ricky's career also allows him to meet many famous celebrities, from Betty Grable to Ida Lupino. Of course, when Lucy meets up with these celebrities, chaos naturally ensues.

Lucy was my first American Idol and her humor has followed me all my life. She is truly an American icon!
Forever Loving Lucy.......2007-08-29
I laughed so much during the times that I watched the series. Although you could see the strain in both Desi and Lucy, their personal differences were put aside to create these shows.
All the shows were extremely funny and the introduction by Desi at the start of each show made me feel as if I was in the studio watching them at work doing what they do best.
Special mention has to go to both Vivian Vance and William Frawley, who as the Mertzes, were also a joy to watch.
As long as we have DVD's of their years making us laugh we will continue to laugh and most certainly LOVE Desi, Vivian, William and forever more I can honestly say that for myself now and always "I LOVE LUCY
I Love Lucy Seasons 7-9.......2007-08-05
Excellent shows. It is nice to enjoy the last shows that Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz did together.
Finally all 13 Lucy Desi Comedy Hours on DVD!.......2007-07-16
When I Love Lucy used to still be on Nick at Nite, I would stay up all night sometimes just to watch! Then they started airing the special Lucy-Desi Comedy Hours every Saturday evening. Watching these hour long episodes of Lucy's antics was much more entertainment than going out or anything else could have been! I recorded them all on VHS, but unfortunately no longer have a VCR. I am very happy that they are now available on DVD!
What can I say about it that has not been said already? All 13 episodes are hilarious, as always. They all had famous guest appearances by big stars of the time like Maurice Chevalier, Tallulah Bankhead, Fernando Lamas, Red Skelton, Milton Berle, Rudy Vallee, Ann Southern, Betty Grable, Ernie Kovacs, and many more!
I am more than happy with this DVD set from Paramount. Not only are all 13 episodes included uncut, there are also many extras, including specials like color footage of on-the-set filming or original cast commercials. The tone and the picture of the actual episodes are wonderfully restored and transfered to DVD! It is almost like you could be watching it live on TV for the first time... The picture and sound are that good.
Buying this set really made my day and I think now that it is possible, I will be spending my next few Saturday evenings with Lucy and Ricky again! :)
Lucy Desi Comedy Hour - THE COMPLETE SERIES.......2007-06-28
If you just looked at this product or own the DVD'S, you know that the show is relly the Lucy Desi Comedy Hour. I got a little disapointed when they titled it "I Love Lucy" - don't get the wrong impression, I have been a fan of this show since in began in 1958, but what disapointed me was they did not title in "The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour" I pre-ordered this item months in advance like any life long Lucy fan probably did, and I have watched all of the episodes countless times since March 13, 2007. I am happy they released it on DVD, just not what they title it. If you own the item, or look closely at the picture, it will say "The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour" in small print. Also, I do not understand why they made the box small, so, look at the I Love Lucy sets, they are 4 DVD sets and the box is HUGE, this set in 4 DVD'S, but the box is so small. The show ran for three years with a total of 13 episodes. Starring Lucille Ball, Dezi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley.
Anyway, if you stuck to reading this review this long, I will stop complaining of the company who released this. The last episode in this set with the guest star, Ernie Kovacs was the last episode Lucille Ball played her famous character, Lucy Ricardo. Also, the day after filming the last episode, Lucille Ball divorced Desi Arnaz. Again, if you stuck to reading this review, I hope it was helpful, and if it wasn't I am sorry.

The season that started it all........2007-05-24
The first season of "I Love Lucy," contains some of the most hilarious episodes the series had. In the middle of the first season, "I Love Lucy," was the first television series to reach ten million viewers, and by the third season "I Love Lucy," reached over 45 million viewers. The sound and picture quality on this DVD is great. Some of my favorite episodes of this season are: The Amateur hour, Lucy fakes illness, the Ballet, The young fans, Pioneer Women, Lucy does a TV commercial, The publicity agent, Ricky thinks he is getting bald, and Ricky asks for a raise. If you are a "Lucy" fan this DVD is a must.

Product Description
From Jane Austen's classic novel about the morals and mores of the class system in Georgian England.
The intelligent and spirited Elizabeth Bennet is one of five daughters -- which, during that era, meant trouble: because women cannot inherit, upon her father's death her family's home will become the property of their nearest male relative. Only marriage, preferably to someone wealthy, can ensure her security. But the proud young lady instantly takes offense when Mr. Darcy, a promising newcomer in town, doesn't seem quite admiring enough, and she spurns his advances.
Slowly and painfully, Elizabeth realizes her error, but not before it seems she has lost Mr. Darcy forever.

Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting. The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed Upstairs Downstairs) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of Wilde) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of The English Patient) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own.
For those who enjoy excellent Austen adaptations such as Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of Pride and Prejudice will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. --Jenny Brown
On the DVD
There's a lot to love (and a lot lacking) on the 10th anniversary limited edition. It comes in a tall, embossed green case that's out of place on a DVD shelf but blends right into a library of volumes. The three discs fit snugly in a sleeve, accompanied by a 120-page deluxe companion book. The main attraction, a retrospective documentary, features interviews with key cast members with the sad exceptions of Jennifer Ehle (who played Elizabeth) and Colin Firth (Mr. Darcy), which is bound to disappoint fans. Nonetheless, there are some amusing anecdotes from Mr. and Mrs. Bennet (played by Benjamin Withrow and Alison Steadman), Mary Bennet (Lucy Briers), Mr. Collins (David Bamber), Mr. Bingley (Crispin Bonham-Carter) and Mr. Wickham (Adrian Lukis), who all look drastically different--and younger--without their period costumes and hairstyles. One producer recalls that casting Colin Firth in the role with which his name is now synonymous was not an easy feat: he auditioned having gained weight and dyed his hair blond for another role, looking like "an unmade bed." Even Firth's own brother doubted his ability to pull off the dashing Darcy: "Isn't he supposed to be sexy?"
The special features also include a walking tour of the shooting locations with Lukis and Briers and an A&E Biography episode on Jane Austen that focuses largely on the onslaught of mid-1990s film adaptations of her novels. If it's your first time purchasing Pride & Prejudice, this collector's edition is a nice one to own. But if you already own the movie, you're not missing out on anything here. --Ellen A. Kim

Pride and Prejudice-The Special Edition (A&E, 1996).......2007-08-31
WOW! This is a great movie! Colin Firth does a dynamite job of playing Mr. Darcy. I also like how "Kitty" avoids "Mr. Collins" in the later part of the movie. "Mrs. Bennent" does a beautiful job of being melodramatic. This is an excellent movie to watch!
Memorable..........2007-08-30
What can I say but 'simply adorable and memorable'? :) I've always wanted to buy this production on DVD format since I first saw it being broadcasted on a cable TV channel in Brazil called 'People and Arts'. It was love at first sight, that's for sure. That was also the precise occasion when I had the inestimable privilege to know such remarkable actors: Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. And it all happened back in 1997/8, and now I've finally got this extremely well-made movie at home to watch and share with friends, relatives and students whenever I feel like.
Thank you BBC for having produced such a masterpiece, and thank you Amazon for proving me with the possibility of buying this product.

Every generation gets the Robin Hood it deserves. After a dashing adventure (The Adventures of Robin Hood), a ponderous retelling (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), spoofs (Mel Brooks' When Things Were Rotten and Robin Hood: Men in Tights), and even a cartoon (Disney's Robin Hood), this thoroughly modern 2006 BBC series brings cheeky wit, exuberant action, and fierce fencing and special effects-enhanced archery to the party. Scruffy Robin (Jonas Armstrong) returns home from the Crusades war-weary and "changed." But when he finds the countryside under the taxing grip of the brutal (he crushes birds with his bare hands!) Sheriff (Keith Allen) and his glowering lieutenant, Guy of Gisbourne (Richard Armitage), he takes up his bow and arrow against the injustice.
Series 1 depicts how Robin of Locksley becomes "Robin of the Wood" and then "Robin Hood," robbing from the rich and, well, you know the drill. "The peasants' hero," this Robin is a tad vainer than previous screen incarnations. As his former servant and wisecracking sidekick Much (Sam Troughton, who can be a bit much himself), observes, Robin likes to linger after his good deeds to see the looks of gratitude. Marian (Lucy Griffiths) is another revelation. The daughter of Nottingham's former sheriff, she doesn't exactly welcome Robin back with open arms. "Five years and you're still peddling the same drivel," she says after he spouts some romantic tripe. A formidable fighter and champion of justice herself, she has a surprising moonlighting gig best not revealed here. We also see the gathering of Robin's men (none call them "merry"), including hulking Little John (Gordon Kennedy), Allan-a-Dale (Joe Armstrong), and Will Scarlett (Harry Lloyd). Beautifully filmed in Hungary (what; England was booked?), Robin Hood is mostly grand escapist adventure, but there are unnerving scenes of violence that raise the stakes. In one episode, a peasant who won't reveal Robin's whereabouts has his tongue cut out, (mercifully offscreen). In another, a child is the victim of a sniper's arrow. . Robin Hood takes liberties with the oft-told story of the legendary folk hero, but it's so well played and rousingly entertaining, few should mind. --Donald Liebenson

Count me in with these Merry Men.......2007-09-13
This Robin Hood is a lark that I enjoy watching with my pre-teen son. Most of the episodes have the near perfect blend of action and great performances, and one of the few really interesting triangle of Robin, Marion and Guy. All of the main characters are exceptionally well cast, though I have to say that I really enjoy Jonas Armstrong as Robin and Richard Armitage as Guy of Gisborne. I had never seen either actor before this, and I think they will both move on to be MAJOR stars and will be giving Clive Owen and Ewan McGregor a run for their money on the big screen soon. Joe Armstrong as Allan a Dale and Harry Lloyd as Will Scarlett have also grown on me with their much smaller parts... Allan contributes the needed bit of humor and Will is the "conscience" in the band, managing to convey all of what is unsaid in one look or one word. I thought Lucy Griffiths was a little stiff in the beginning episodes, but her Marion grew on me by the end. Although it occasionally throws in a few things that keep it from being completely family friendly (the sheriff is joking one minute then has someone's tongue cut off with scissors??) One or two of the episodes dragged a bit, but all in all I enjoyed every minute of my time in Sherwood and can't wait for Season 2. My biggest complaint? Why does all of the good stuff from the BBC cost so much?
Kinder, gentler, PC Robin Hood.......2007-09-04
This offering from BBC Video is quite possibly the worst Robin Hood ever. The legend has been rewritten to serve as political commentary (i.e., propaganda) disguised as an action series. Robin and his men are terrorists according to the Sheriff who is also fond of prattling on about the need for law and order and etc., etc., etc. Marion's character is also appropriately updated to allow her to have a role in the fighting. And speaking of the fighting, the scenes more resemble the rumbles between the Sharks and the Jets in West Side Story than medieval combat. As if all this were not bad enough, we also have shallow characters and poor acting. All things considered, this telling of Robin Hood is disappointing and one to avoid unless they pay you to watch it.
Excellent Adventure!!.......2007-08-17
I was so excited when I got this DVD!! I wanted to see it so bad! And I wasn't disappointed, this series is awesome! The acting may be a little quirky, but it is like watching a 13 episode long movie! It has that great quality that we look for in a tv series. I also enjoy the lead actor as Robin Hood, he adds the perfect mixture of arrogance and being a hero. If you enjoy the time frame then you'll enjoy this and the way they add a little modern twist to the costumes and scenes. It also helps that the actors are younger, making the story more appealing to the young demographic! Im definately happy that I made the choice to get into this series, and hopefully will get to see season 2! Long live Robin Hood!
Can't Wait for Season 2.......2007-08-07
I checked this out after being knocked out by Richard Armitage's performance in "North & South," (along with a million or so other women). And he does not disappoint in this series, playing Guy of Gisborne as a creepy but complex baddie with something of an inner life and gobs of menacing sex appeal. But the story, of course, revolves around Robin Hood, and Jonas Armstrong is just great, so perfect for the part. He looks like sort of a skinny backpacker dude, but he fills out this major role with tons of heart, guts, and charm.
What did surprise me is that I really liked every single member of the rest of the cast and actually started to care about these characters. Great that Lucy Griffiths plays Marian as a strong, thoughtful woman who can hold her own among all these guys. (Same goes for Anjali Jay as Djaq.) Keith Allen as the sheriff reminded me of a sort of mobbed-up London drug dealer, and then I realized that I had seen him playing more or less exactly that role in "Trainspotting," an interesting way to go with this traditional bad-guy character. He clearly relishes playing this part.
I found most of the episodes to be exciting and interesting, and the last two are real stunners. Excellent soundtrack. There's a lot of funky wardrobe in this show, and it quickly becomes obvious that these are deliberate choices. They are clearly not going for historical accuracy, and after a while it is fun picking out the Birkenstocks and camouflage combat pants. And I do like the not-terribly-subtle political messages about torture, imprisonment, insurgencies, PTSD, and so on.
Can't quite give it five stars, but this is really an enjoyable romp, with lots more going for it than just plenty of eye candy for the ladies. There are also lots of extras sprinkled throughout the discs, and the audio commentaries are hilarious.
Great Clean Fun, a creative and modern version of Robin Hood.......2007-07-30
This is a great series. I nice new look on the classic tale of Robin Hood. The acting is great, especially that of Keith Allen. It is a pretty corny show, but if you don't let that bother you it is a very enjoyable show. It is clean, funny, and action packed. A truly creative look on the story of Robin Hood. This is probably my favorite version of Robin Hood yet.

I bought this for my wife because she is a big Lucy fan. This fourth season was great, funny. Oh, my goodness there are some comedy classic gems in here as the gang moves to Hollywood for Ricky to work on a film.

Season 2 of I Love Lucy includes two of the most famous half-hours in television history. "Job Switching," originally broadcast mid-September of 1952, is the crazy, battle-of-the-sexes episode in which husbands Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz) and Fred Mertz (William Frawley) trade roles with wives Lucy (Lucille Ball) and Ethel (Vivian Vance), culminating in the men making a shambles of domestic chores while Lucy and Ethel take disastrous work at a chocolate factory. That's right: This is the show where the ladies have a Chaplinesque experience with a too-fast factory conveyor belt, forcing them to hide candies in their mouths, in their hats, and down their blouses lest a tough forewoman fire them for incompetence. A half-century later, the scene is still so fresh and funny it would grace any current sitcom. "Lucy Goes to the Hospital," which received an amazing 71.7 rating on January 19, 1953, is the historic episode featuring the birth of Little Ricky and a load of wonderful slapstick. Other television series (The Dick Van Dyke Show) and movies (Nine Months) have tried to top Lucy's time-to-go-to-the-hospital shenanigans, but there's nothing like the sight of Ricky and Fred falling all over themselves or Ricky showing up at the maternity ward (direct from a voodoo-themed show at the Tropicana) in witch doctor makeup.
The other 31 episodes included in I Love Lucy: The Compete Second Season have choice moments, too. "Lucy Becomes a Sculptress" finds the ever-ambitious redhead falling for empty flattery at an art-supply store and commencing an ill-advised career working in clay. Ricky agrees to bless this new endeavor if an art critic says she has talent, but Lucy tries to increase her chances by posing as a bust of herself--resulting in mayhem, of course. The usual running themes in I Love Lucy--Lucy's misguided desire to be a part of Ricky's musical career, and her penchant for disguising herself to investigate something--are all over The Complete Second Season. "Ricky Loses His Voice" is a delightful piece in which Ricky's laryngitis inspires Lucy, the Mertzes, and an aging chorus line to put on a Tropicana spectacle, and "Ricky Has Labor Pains" finds Lucy and Ethel going undercover as male reporters to find out what happens at a stag party. Lots to enjoy here, and the special features include bloopers, information about the guest cast, and snippets from Ball's radio show. --Tom Keogh

I Love Lucy - The Complete Second Season.......2007-08-24
I purchased the "I Love Lucy-The Complete Second Season" as a gift for myself.
The second season includes some of the funniest episodes, such as the unforgettable "Job Switching" episode in which Lucy & Ethel get a job in a chocolate factory, and "Never Do Business With Friends", where the Ricardo's and the Mertzes squabble over a broken washing machine. I love season two because these episodes cover the birth of Little Ricky, from "Lucy is Enciente", the wonderful touching episode in which Lucy tells Ricky that she is "expecting"., to "Lucy Goes To The Hospital, the hilarious episode that concludes with the birth of Little Ricky. The DVD's also contain great behind-the-scenes clips, original openings, flubs, lost scenes, etc. Five full episodes of Lucy's pre-Lucy radio show, "My Favorite Husband" are included as well. This is a must for fans of "I
Love Lucy". I highly recommend it.
Lucy Season 2.......2007-07-03
I LOVE LUCY is classic comedy and Season Two is just a reinforcement of the popularity that the show gained in its first season. It is unlikely that there will ever be a comedy foursome to match the talents of Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel. A look back at the fifties through their antics is good for the soul.
Could Not Stop Watching ... .......2007-06-20
I absolutely loved watching Season Two. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time ... I believe I was just as excited then as the audience back in the 1950's to see Little Ricky born. Wouldn't ya know that Lucy really went into labor wiht Desi Arnaz, jr., that very same day??

My eleven year old loves I Love Lucy and absolutely fell in love with these episodes! Seeing little Ricky come into the series was a great experience for her. Finally, a series she can laugh hysterically at without me worrying about what she's watching!

I Love Lucy: The Complete Fifth Season finds Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) making an international mess out of husband Ricky's globe-trotting tour as an entertainer. Beginning with "Lucy Visits Grauman's" and "Lucy and John Wayne," the impulsive redhead risks Ricky's sanity in Hollywood by stealing a cement slab, from the famous entrance to Grauman's Chinese Theater, that contains the imprint of John Wayne's footprints and signature. In the tradition of superstars playing themselves on I Love Lucy, an exasperated (and very funny) Wayne gets into the act over and over and over again, making new imprints on multiple slabs because Lucy keeps messing up the results. After more shenanigans in Los Angeles (Lucy attends a ritzy party with a dummy substituting for her unavailable husband) and a disastrous train ride home, it's time to jeopardize Ricky's success during an interview show that ends disastrously.
Lucy's fifth season travel theme continues when Ricky and his band are booked on a European tour that does not include his wife or the Mertzes. Of course, that doesn't stop the determined Lucy (or Ethel), who schemes her way into Ricky's plans, only to have a number of snafus arise as she tries to leave the country. In the I Love Lucy tradition, entire episodes are written around such simple matters as trying to get a passport, or helping with Fred's fear of getting seasick while traveling. All this show's stars really need is a ridiculous, open-ended situation to exploit, and the comedy flows from there. "Bon Voyage" is a particularly funny episode in which Lucy gets left behind by the European-bound ship carrying Ricky and the others, and she has to find a way to get back aboard. The hilarious "Lucy and the Queen" finds her angling in London for a way to meet the Royal Family after Ricky is invited to say hello at the Palladium. From there, Lucy creates chaos in Scotland (this episode includes a memorable dream sequence in which Ricky appears as Scotty MacTavish MacDougal MacCardo), Paris (where she and Ethel plot to meet guest star and good sport Charles Boyer at an outdoor café), Rome (the outstanding "Lucy's Italian Movie" finds her dispatched to a vineyard, where she has to crush grapes--brilliantly--with her feet). Lots of special features, including a behind-the-scenes peek and bloopers. --Tom Keogh

Possibly the series' funniest season, from Hollywood to Europe.......2007-04-02
Season five of I LOVE LUCY (1955-1956) from Paramount Home Video has some of the series' most classic episodes, including John Wayne's footprints in Hollywood and a memorable transcontinental train journey home to New York City on disk one; bon voyage to Europe and Lucy needing a helicopter to reach a missed ship on disk two; and all over Europe on disks three and four, including the grapes stomping (and fighting!) in Italy, romancing Charles Boyer and starting a nutty fashion trend in Paris, winning at gambling in Monte Carlo when they were not even consciously playing (and are not even supposed to be in the casino per Ricky), and, funniest of all, smuggling a huge smelly cheese through transatlantic customs disguised as a baby (then getting accused of murder in New York when Lucy and Ethel eat it en route to save on the price of a baby plane ticket!). It is especially funny to see tight-wad Fred Mertz made Ricky's Band Manager and constantly take penny-pinching to new heights. This matchless series is as great as TV sitcoms get. And season five is close to the best season. Other seasons have truly classic episodes, but season five has the most of them, especially impressive because it only has 26 episodes.
And we finally get I LOVE LUCY completely remastered, uncut, and non-commercial after half a century with cuts. (The original shows clock in at around 26 minutes, so a full four minutes are missing from every syndicated episode, even now on TV Land.) We also get a glimpse of what the show was really like in prime time, with bonus sections filled with animated commercials, original animated openings and intermission lead-ins, and animated fade-outs that have not been seen in fifty years. The "hearts on satin" credits were not created until syndication. And while Desi Arnaz still chain smokes, the series is now blessedly sponsored by Sanka, Lilt permanent, and Fluffo vegetable shortening, not a forgotten cigarette company.
The show, in season five, has a very special episode that aired on my fifth birthday--January 30, 1956. It has also acquired two more writers. Bob Schiller and Bob Weiskopf join Jess Oppenheimer, Madelyn Pugh, and Bob Carroll, Jr. Their writing is world-class and the actors are immortal after more than half a century. The latter three writers go back to 1949 and Lucille Ball's radio sitcom "My Favorite Husband", four episodes of which are included on the four disks. We also see "lost" and flubbed scenes, and Jess Oppenheimer takes us behind the scenes on how he got the writing gig for the series.
This is an elegantly produced DVD from Paramount Home Video, with lots of fun bonuses and superb packaging. I highly recommend renting or buying I LOVE LUCY season five. I recommend buying because you will have an entire season in one trim package and will watch favorite shows often.
A TIMELESS COMEDY HIT.......2007-03-25
Watching this brilliant comedy, it is sometimes hard to believe that all of them are gone. Watching them over and over it never gets tiring or boring. It's like watching old friends again. For me the best sit com ever, followed by the Golden Girls.
Some of the best tv ever made!.......2007-01-09
What more can I say. Lucy and Desi invented the situation comedy as we know it. The quality is so good it looks like it was filmed yesterday.

I Love Lucy - The Complete Third Season.......2007-07-22
Awesome Lucy and the rest of the cast at their best, as always!
Why EDITED?.......2007-07-01
I became an avid watcher of ILL in the 1980's, living in LA, and as i complete collecting the entire series, once again, i come upon a truncated (edited) version. So far, i own seasons 3 thru 6 and the recently released "The Final Seasons Seasons 7,8&9", which unfortunately edited out a key plot point in the Tallulah Bankead episode, aka 'The Celebrity Next Door.'
Yesterday, i decided to buy another volume of ILL, Season 3. Right off, i noticed in 'The Black Wig' an entire segment is missing. In the version i saw on KTLA circa 1989, Ball and Vance are inside of a theater costume-storage room, after Vance had called a female pal in a not-short phone segment, included on the dvd, which sets up them going to meet the woman and borrow a costume.
What IS missing on this DVD is Ball and Vance arriving, meeting the woman, and selecting a costume from what was available. Vance tried on a hodegepodge of 'ethnic' outfits (Geisha girl, Eskimo, Indian) after rummaging through the racks with Ball, and briefly meeting the woman Vance spoke with on the phone. This passage is completely missing and the episode cuts to Ball and Vance entering a restaurant.
It seems unreasonable that these episodes are edited beyond what was televised in the 1980s, as they are packaged and promoted as 'the complete season' and touted for having footage not seen since the 1950s. True, all the volumes have some out-takes and bonus footage, but it's a costly investment purchasing the entire series, and consumers should be warned that available footage that was shown even in syndicated, edited versions is MISSING, and to me that is not 'the complete season,' it is the 'incomplete, edited-after-being-edited-for-syndication season'...
CBS DVD needs to replace the missing footage and offer consumers the option for a free exchange once they get these errors corrected. I haven't noticed missing footage in Seasons 4, 5,or 6, but i'm extremely dissatisfied that "The Complete Third Season" and "The Final Seasons 7,8&9" have disappointed me by having footage missing that was available for free on commercial television.
This won't stop me from completing my collection and purchasing Seasons 1 and 2 soon, and i'll hope they ARE the complete seasons. "The Complete Third Season" is not...complete.
Keep Lucy Coming!!.......2007-05-28

It feels both inaccurate and inadequate to describe The Office as a comedy. On a superficial level, it disdains all the conventions of television sitcoms: there are no punch lines, no jokes, no laugh tracks, and no cute happy endings. More profoundly, it's not what we're used to thinking of as funny. Most of the fervently devoted fan base watched with a discomfortingly thrilling combination of identification and mortification. The paradox is that its best moments are almost physically unwatchable.
Set in the offices of a fictional British paper merchant, The Office is filmed in the style of a reality television show. The writing is subtle and deft, the acting wonderful, and the characters beautifully drawn: the cadaverous team leader Gareth (Mackenzie Crook); the monstrous sales rep, Chris Finch (Ralph Ineson); and the decent but long-suffering everyman Tim (Martin Freeman), whose ambition and imagination have been crushed out of him by the banality of the life he dreams uselessly of escaping. The show is stolen, as it was intended to be, by insufferable office manager David Brent, played by codirector-cowriter Ricky Gervais. Brent will become a name as emblematic for a particular kind of British grotesque as Basil Fawlty, but he is a deeper character. Fawlty is an exaggeration of reality, and therefore a safely comic figure. Brent is as appalling as only reality can be. --Andrew Mueller
Description
Welcome to Wernham Hogg, a suburban paper company where "life is stationery." Critics and fans alike have lauded this hilarious, biting look at everyday office life, told in the mockumentary style of cult comedy classics such as This is Spinal Tap and The Larry Sanders Show. The show revolves around David Brent, (an instant classic character widely compared to Basil Fawlty of Fawlty Towers) the oblivious general manager who instigates petty office rivalries. The wince-worthy Brent still considers himself "a friend first and a boss second...probably an entertainer third."
Customer Reviews:
Never squirmed so much in my life; also, multiple orgasmic laughs..........2007-09-12
There's no use comparing the American and British versions--it's best to look at them as separate entities. While Carrell plays the regional manager as bafoonish and innocent, Gervais is bafoonish and despicable in his innocence. This version holds the awkward pauses longer, and has many moments where I truly wanted to pause just for relief from the discomfort it's realism brings forth; and yet, I laughed. Episode Four is probably the best in this series (season). The main characters are given much more attention and the secondary characters much less than in the American version, but the actors make you realize why--they are incredibly brillant. A reviewer commented that this is very raunchy; it definitely has its moments. Scenes that would never have flown in the American version stand proudly in the original, scenes that no one would have believed in America because of our more stringent sexual harassment clauses. But, then, it's British humor, and I get and can appreciate it. Anyway, give it a shot, whether you like the American version (which I do) or not. It's a bit more depressing, but that's only because it's a bit more real.
The hilarious apotheosis of "cringe" humor.......2007-06-22
It's a curious thing, "The Office". After watching the entire first series, I had to ask myself why I had laughed so much. There are no traditional punchlines, catch phrases, "wacky" situations or unrealistically outrageous characters and, if the viewer would willingly suspend his disbelief, it could very well be the thing it purports to be: a documentary of an actual, ordinary office environment, with all its ugly-to-mediocre looking people and their ludicrous banalities, foibles and petty dramas. Any person who has ever worked in an office, or has been in any human grouping for that matter, will recognize the characters and situations of "The Office" as entirely true to life and not comedic exaggerations, and I guess that's what makes this show so funny: real life can be pretty bloody hilarious. Ordinary people saying and doing stupid and awkward things...you can't beat it. (btw, episode 4 has got to be one of the classic episodes in the history of TV- absolutely perfect).
good show.......2007-05-19
this dvd 'the office' series one is notablee some fine work . personally recommended and archivable for many general aspects in the movements of respectable modern entertainment . very mad . it is . also marking the generation sufficiently .
Good for British Humor but not as funny as the American version.......2007-05-14
Some definately funny quotable moments, but few and far between. Better than many American sitcoms, but can't compare to the American The Office.
SO GREAT!.......2007-05-13
I watched these several years ago... before the US series. I love BOTH independently. But this one is uniquely British and David Brent is so WONDERFULLY obscene! Not gross, but just horribly inappropriate! And clueless. If you are expecting the US version with Slough accents, you are going to be sad. The only episode that has the same script is the pilot. And even so, there is something that works better in England with it. Ricky Gervais is a comic genius, possibly god!
