A "let's get laid" favorite from the teen-comedy trend of the early 1980s, The Last American Virgin is beloved enough to earn its own fan-driven website, and it's still lots of fun. While tapping into the same zeitgeist that popularized Fast Times at Ridgemont High (which was released just one week earlier), this above-average sex comedy mixes high-school high jinks with the real anguish of unrequited love, as a nice kid named Gary (Lawrence Monoson) falls for Karen (Diane Franklin), a cute classmate who won't return his affections. Gary delivers pizza, leading to the comic highlight when his horny pals (Steve Antin, Joe Rubbo) deliver more than pizza to a lonely Latina bombshell (Louisa Moritz). But Gary wants his "first time" to be special, and director Boaz Davidson smartly avoids the obvious by denying Gary of the thing he wants most. Intended as the first in a series of remakes of the Israeli "Lemon Popsicle" comedies of the 1970s, The Last American Virgin offers abundant nudity, a recycled soundtrack of '80s hits, and plenty of hair mousse, but it's genuine hormonal angst that's given it a lasting reputation. --Jeff Shannon

But when Gary falls for the girl of his dreamsonly to learn that she's about to become Rick's latest conquesthe soon discovers that having sex doesn't just mean losing his virginity, it may mean losing his innocence forever.

Reality in a Hollywood movie?.......2007-04-11
The ending made this movie. Its not often that you can say a Hollywood movie reflects real life so spot on. This movie sums up the poor decision makeing (men and women) that is rampent when love is involved. It's no wonder 50% of all marriges end in devorce. Smoke and mirrors and refuseing to see the facts
I love this movie.......2007-04-01
I have loved it ever since I saw it in 1991( I was 10 at the time). It came on Tv. and I was hooked ever since. It was so so hard to find this movie. I always wanted to rent the movie, but the video stores never had it. I found it on amazon, so I had to buy it. I am now the proud owner of this hard to find movie
This is your teen movie you have to see. The ending made me cry, well almost. Karen totally did Gary dirty, after all that he did for her, when she got pregnant by his friend, who didn't want to claim the baby.
Gary was to nice, but he was in love with the girl. But I don't know if I would talk to my friend who did something like that to me. especially since he knew gary liked Karen.
Deconstruction of the fictitious "American dream".......2007-03-01
After failing miserably in "The Karate Kid," unable to convince moviegoers that he could ever be a winner, here Ralph Macchio plays a more believable sap. And his girlfriend, far from cheering him on while he incapacitates his adversaries with "The Swan," turns out to be no more than an abortion-happy tramp in a pretty package. So true, so true. She basically dumps him for the sensei's testosterone-chewin' pet protege and from then on, Ralph is nauseated by the thought of having sex ... with girls anyway.
The 80's American pie!!.......2006-12-05
Hello! I love this movie! it is a provocative! but it is sad!! I cry every time!!! :( its so sad! You have to watch it!!! and see for your self!!
Prissy!
CLassic 80's Horn Y Edition.......2006-08-12
This movie is so funny, classic porky's type movie but with a sweet message. Dont help girls who love bad boys they will break your heart, completely unexpected ending for a raunchy pre-American Pie comedy.. still worth the crabs, I mean the laughs.

Product Description
An early all-star musical spectacular featuring Flo Ziegfield and the greatest names in show business.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoy the innocence of it all, as well as Eddy Cantor and Helen Morgan.......2007-07-21
We should encourage each other to smile indulgently at the antics and musical tastes of our great-grandparents. After all, our own great-grandchildren will soon enough be doing the same to us. In Glorifying the American Girl, the story of Gloria Hughes' ambition to be a musical star is appliqued onto the Broadway extravaganza of a Florenz Ziegfeld show. We get songs, dances, fabulous costumes, show girls, ukulele plucking, comedy skits, a near-fatal accident, lechery, tearful farewells, love lost and love found and, of course, a big finale where Gloria's success is tempered only by the sadness of a love too long delayed, yet still made satisfying by the happiness of her two best friends. In other words, there's much to snicker about...just don't take your own all-too-soon-to-be-dated enthusiasms too seriously.
Briefly, Gloria (Mary Eaton) works with Buddy (Edward Crandall) and Barbara (Gloria Shea) at Heiman's Department store. Buddy plays piano while Gloria sings the latest songs so that customers will buy the sheet music. Barbara is a clerk. Buddy loves Gloria. Barbara loves Buddy. Gloria thinks she loves Buddy. When Danny Miller (Dan Healy), part of the song and dance team, Miller and Mooney, fires his latest Mooney at the company picnic, he spots Gloria dancing. Before long Gloria has left Heiman's and become the replacement Mooney. While Buddy pines for Gloria and Barbara pines for Buddy, Miller and Gloria travel the country with their act. They're spotted by a scout working for Florenz Ziegfeld and arrive in New York with big hopes and big dreams. It doesn't work out. But Gloria fights for a chance to show her stuff and lands a spot in the show. Danny, who is something of a lech as well as a good dancer, hangs around because of a contract he had Gloria sign. Now opening night approaches. But wait. Barbara has been hit by a taxi and is in critical condition. Buddy realizes he loves Barbara. Gloria goes on with the show. In a miracle of careless editing, Buddy and Barbara are in their seats, part of the happy, applauding audience as Gloria, learning at the last minute that Buddy and Barbara are wed, achieves fame.
What makes all this dated nonsense watchable is the innocence of the acting, the songs and dances, and, during the last third of the movie, the Ziegfeld Follies on stage. The Follies were lush, fabulous variety shows. We have an odd tableau that features nuns, a bishop, scantily clad girls and half naked chorus boys probably doing something religiously questionable; there's Helen Morgan sitting on a piano telling us another sad story in song about her man; here's Rudy Vallee singing to us that he's just a vagabond lover looking for the girl in his vagabond dreams; front and center are high-kicking chorines with none of the self-conscious angst of A Chorus Line; they just keep slapping the leather to the floor. And just before Gloria's big starring number, here's Eddie Cantor with an associate and a stooge doing a long comedy bit about a customer unfortunate enough to enter the tailor shop where Cantor works. While Vallee looks much like the self-satisfied, dirty old man he turned into, Helen Morgan is great. She could deliver a torch song like few before or since. And Eddie Cantor gives all us aging youngsters a chance to see what made him such a big star in vaudeville and on Broadway. The humor is ethnic (e.g., broad and Jewish), the timing is perfect and the routine keeps building. I don't know who his stooge was or the fellow who played Cantor's boss, but they were first-rate second bananas.
This movie was supposed to have had the Ziegfeld Follies sequences shot in Technicolor. Perhaps somewhere there is a VHS or DVD version that reflects this. Most copies I've heard of have just been slapped together as cheaply as possible with no color and, often, with a lot of chopping. In the version I have, Barbara's auto accident, Buddy's promise of love, their marriage and then their being seated in the audience while Gloria triumphs is cut and edited incomprehensibly. The movie is in the public domain and looks every bit of it. Perhaps not much of a loss, but it would have been good to have seen Morgan and Cantor under better circumstances.
Talking Curiosity.......2007-04-12
Two factors drew me into purchasing this product: that this film is an early talkie and Flo Ziegfeld. The film, like the curate's egg, is good in parts but has problems with long and boring dialogue, especially the speech made by the boss at the firm's outing. That said, it is a very interesting period piece showing life as it was for ordinary people in the late 20s. There are set pieces towards the end of the film of the Ziegfeld Girls arranged by Flo Ziegfeld himself (which are less spectacular than legend would have one believe) plus a rather over-long sketch by Eddie Cantor, probably hilarious in its day, but which is now very dated. The biggest disappointment of all is that the film is black and white throughout, whereas the opening credits promise the staged scenes in Technicolour. I think that had these colour scenes been restored, the DVD company could have charged that little bit extra and we would have been given a superb window on our cinematic heritage and I, for one, would not have been so stingy on the star rating!
A rare look into entertainment history.......2007-03-18
Just because I gave this movie four stars doesn't mean it will be entertaining to everyone or even most people. Its main value today is to get a rare glimpse at one of the earliest talkie musicals, and also see and hear what a Ziegfeld show might have been like right before the famous showman went broke in the stock market crash of 1929. Florenz Ziegfeld himself actually produced this film, which features his Ziegfeld Follies girls. The movie actually does have a plot of sorts, although its purpose in this film, as in many of the early talkie musicals, is mainly to set up the singing and dancing numbers. This film, though, is unusual in that the plot does actually teach a little unexpected lesson on the price of fame.
The film opens with Gloria, Barbara, and Buddy selling sheet music in a New York City department store. Gloria and Buddy have been sweethearts since childhood, but Gloria wants a career before she settles down. To complicate matters, Barbara is secretly in love with Buddy. A vaudeville hoofer sees Gloria dancing at a store picnic and wants to take her on as a dance partner. They take their act on the road and are spotted by one of Ziegfeld's talent scouts. Back in New York at the audition, the Follies want Gloria but not her partner. Unfortunately for Gloria, though, she signed a five year contract splitting all her earnings with her partner. Gloria becomes the star of Ziegfeld's new show, and this sets up the lavish production numbers of the last third of the film.
The movie contains very brief shots of Irving Berlin, Billie Burke, and NYC Mayor Jimmy Walker, supposedly as they are entering the theatre to see the show. Particularly entertaining in the Ziegfeld production part of the film are performances by Helen Morgan, Rudy Valee, and Eddie Cantor. If you look closely you can spot Johnny Weissmuller wearing nothing but a fig leaf. You have to remember that this film was made before there was any effective production code, so you'll likely be shocked at the revealing nature of some of the costumes in the production numbers. Also, at one point of the film, Gloria's mother actually utters the D-word quite clearly and without any implied effrontery when she is trying to open up her reading glasses. This is a full ten years before such a big deal was made of Rhett Butler using the same word in "Gone with the Wind". Unfortunately, although the last third of the film was shot in Technicolor, the DVD version is in black and white. Also, because of the limitations of technology and the age of this film, there are many long shots of the production numbers with the Ziegfeld Follies girls that make it impossible to see the details of the lavish costumes and sets. However, in spite of its flaws, I'd recommend it to anyone interested in this period of history and these very early talkie gems of which so few are remaining in any form.

The original title of this French-produced English language production was Live Virgin, but after costar Mena Suvari rose to fame in American Pie and American Beauty (a kind of before and after snapshot of the American dream), a name change was inevitable. Suvari is the daughter of silver-haired pornographic film producer Robert Loggia. She rebels against her estranged father by signing on to an interactive pay-per-view sex event with kinky cable porn king Bob Hoskins. She agrees to lose her virginity live on TV while thousands of men across the nation, uh, experience the event via a cybernetic suit wired to the deflowering stud. Despite its salacious material, this screeching sex farce earns its R rating for language--there's little nudity but plenty of four letter screaming between the competitors. Not so much plotted as simply let loose, it's a frantic, sloppy mess with characters rushing every which way and clashing loudly while Suvari's boyfriend (Gabriel Mann) frenetically tries to put a stop to the whole sleazy affair. Sally Kellerman costars as a hypocritical tabloid talk show host who rails against the event while feeding its publicity with continuing coverage, and X-rated star Ron Jeremy has a bit part as a cop. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
An Embarrassment.......2005-08-31
There is no way around the conclusion that this production was a major embarrassment to everyone associated with it and a career breaker to some.
Castwise, Mena Suvari and Gabriel Mann somehow manage to maintain their dignity despite the total meltdown around them and Alexandra Wentworth actually turns in an excellent performance in one of the supporting roles. But Bob Hoskins and Robert Loggia are unbelievably awful and the rest of the cast are not much better.
The concept was fairly original or at least the most extreme take on an unoriginal concept, but at the last minute it gutlessly pulls back for a lame moralistic ending.
The directing, production design, and editing are all about as bad as you will find in a mainstream production. Bad enough that the movie would be a useful bad example for students in film school.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
Junky Crapness Garbadgy Junkeyness.......2003-09-06
When I was in college I took this class called Stage Directing. It was a great class. For my final project I directed a scene from Stephen Soundheim's wacky and profound musical ASSASSINS. After my scene ran, the only big problem everybody seemed to think it had was, THAT MAYBE THE CHARACTERS SHOULD SCREAM A LITTLE LESS. IT'S KIND OF ANNOYING IF THEY DO AND MANY TIMES IT'S FAR MORE EFFECTIVE IF THEY SEETH OR GET SOFT INSTEAD OF BEING AT THE SCREAMING LEVEL THE WHOLE TIME. NOW SINCE I'VE BEGUN SCREAMING AT YOU, YOU'RE ALL PROBABLY PISSED AND WANT TO STOP READING. Please don't there is a good explanation for my screaming.
It's the only way I can get close to describing the mess that is AMERICAN VIRIGN. A movie that is so bad, and so incredibly vapid that you can track Mena Suvari's (LOSER) fading career by it. When director SAM MENDES cast her in AMERICAN BEAUTY, I'll bet many people thought she was destined for a nice long career. Maybe, that's why a film like AMERICAN PIE looks like a step down and it's sub par sequel is even worse. But when she agreed to play a tart in AMERICAN VIRGIN, I guess her career went down the tubes with the word American.
The film tells the story of porn baron Ronny Bartalotti (Robert Loggia, Lost Highway); he's a harsh abrasive individual that loves his daughter Katrina (Suvari) very much. He would do anything for her. Too bad she doesn't see it in her father. When she agrees to work for her Dad's former employee and biggest rival Joey Quinn (Bob Hoskins, Who Framed Roger Rabbit) by losing her virginity to millions of men around the world on national TV using a virtual reality suit. It's up to dear old dad to save his sweetheart.
As this movie rolls out you begin to realize something. Nothing makes sense. It's like the director (Jean-Pierre Marois, Save the Rabbits) was given a bunch of characters and chucked a camera in their face. Loggia and Hoskins spend the entire film screaming and yelling at each other. Yes, each actor just screams, A lot! It's like Marois got mad at each actor, telling them both, you need to scream more. The movie needs more screaming. How this film got past the editing stage with so much screaming and yelling in it, is beyond me?
There is also a subplot involving a boyfriend (Gabriel Mann, Buffalo Soldiers) whose whole goal is to bump into things and fall from high places. There is also a trashy TV talk show host (Sally Kellerman, MASH) who shows up everywhere as well, cause for some reason all Talk shows are live, and have a desire to cover events like this.
The film is attempting to be a satire. But of what I'm not sure. It's like any coherent (and funny) idea was left on the cutting room floor, replaced by random scenes. There is this one scene involving a porn star that can't get it up, that goes on far to long and in the end it makes very little sense? Why it's in this movie? I guess to stretch the running time. I almost turned it off at that point.
Why anyone thought this meandering script was ripe for the plucking is beyond me. I had a pal in Los Angeles who came across a script called "****." It was the worst script ever written, but damn it had more potential than this piece of crap.
Do yourself a favor if you're passing down the video aisle and you come across a film called AMERICAN VIRGIN! Skip it! You'll be so glad you did.
Lovely Mena Is ... Wasted: Watch "American Pie" Instead.......2002-04-28
I read about "American Virgin" when it was still called "Live Virgin" on an British movie magazine, and the review then was not good at all. Now I found its title changed owing to Mena Suvari's rising stardom, and I got it on Amazon co. jp. (Thanks for your fast delivery). Well, I tell you, fans of lovely Mena, I found this turns out to be really ... bad.
Let me correct one misunderstanding (if you have) on your side that this is a Mena Suvari film. No. It's stars are Robert Loggia ("Independence Day") and Bob Hoskins ("Monalisa"), and Mena plays the secondary role no matter what you see on the video jacket. The male players are adult film directors, and kind of rivals to each other. And daddy Robert finds her daughter Mena Suvari is going to 'star' in Bob's live-net show, in which Mena loses her virginity, sharing the experience on the net with audience wearing green-colored techno-suits which give the same sensation the lucky guy is going to have.... Oh dear.
But of course, this is a comedy, and actually I found little nudity (and none of Mena, thank Heaven), so guys, don't be mistaken. The film is totally devoid of humor, and the two veteran actors are only swearing dirty words in public, on TV, and whenever they get a chance, and the film seems to think it's funny. Mena's boyfriend is a crying mama's boy, and trying to do something to change her mind, always breaks something in an awkward way. But I never found a single moment even slightly funny during the course ... but remember, I am a Japanese, and that's because cultural diference. But I laughed lots of good and healthy laughs while watching "American Pie."
Probably, besides the dismally made sequel to "Carrie," this is a film Mena Suvari wants to forget. If you're a truly devoted fan of her, watch it.
A movie with something missing........2002-02-17
You have a movie called American Virgin - it stars Mena Suvari and has the comical Bob Hoskins - why was I bored?
It has a really good concept and the cast sounds really appealing but it was not as I expected it.
Mena Suvari plays the Live Virgin who will lose her virginity on air when she hits 18. I felt that her character was dense and was not brought out enough.
Bob Hoskins plays the director of Live Virgin. He has some great humour and his character is great...but there was something missing.
I think there is something missing from the movie as a whole. Although there are some funny moments I felt a little uninterested as the film progressed. And then you have the big finale which is exactly as I expected...happy ever after. Why for once can't they break the rules and have a satisfying/entertaining ending?
The movie is watchable and not a bad attempt at all.
Not as great as no one thought would be........2002-01-18
When a young beautiful woman (Mena Suvari) decides to lose her virginity in a live boardcast show in the internet. When her father (Robert Loggia)-her porno filmmaker dad decides to stop her to before she does it but a Preverted Filmmaker (Bob Hopkins) is going to direct his daughter for the show. The pair of Porn Peddlers go to war.
Directed by Jean Pierre-Marois (Which he also Co-Wrote the film with Ira Israel) made a film that has some good laughs and a good premise but it has annoying performances by Loggia and Hopkins, despite a solid cast. This film has little to offer, not for all comic viewing. Grade:B-.

Perfect example of how boring and mundane Cracker really were.......2006-03-07
The Good
Two videos for "Teen Angst" are featured on this release. The first is an unreleased acoustic version, while the second is the original. A live performance video from MTV's 120 Minutes for "Get Off This" follows. Two versions for Cracker's most notable song "Low" are included as well. "Euro-Trash Girl" and "I Hate my Generation" are the other two videos. After Cracker's videos play out, you are treated to a live performance in it's entirety that was recorded in 1993 at Denver's Ogden Theatre.
The Bad
To call this DVD a `best of' is a real stretch. What you're really getting is a nine song live show and few videos. What I can't fathom the most is...is there really a demand for this?! Most people will recognize three songs at best. When alternative/grunge broke in the early nineties there were innovators that lead the way like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden. There were also a bunch of bands who jumped on the bandwagon, but weren't equally a good. Cracker is one of those bands.
The Verdict
It doesn't matter whether you grab the CD or the DVD, Get On With It: The Best of Cracker is a perfect example of how boring and mundane Cracker really were.
Good but frustrating........2006-02-28
What is included on this dvd is nice for the Cracker fan, but what is lacking is frustrating. To begin, this dvd and the companion cd were released now years after Virgin booted Cracker and many other bands after not adequately promoting them. Now, this set was released without the band's input or support. Nonetheless, lets check it out...
The videos included here are good, though the video for Get Off This is absent, a live MTV performance stands in for it, which may actually be better, but you'd think they could've included both.
There is no material later than 1996's video "I Hate My Generation." Later singles, such as "Nothing To Believe In" or any material from later albums is not included.
The concert footage is good, it's all from one show in late '93. One would think that with all of this adding up to little more than an hour, Virgin could have scraped together some other tv performances, live takes and extras to make the package a bit more appealing.
Also, the notes on the dvd make it sound as if the band just quit or died after a few albums, though they do say that the band had 8 charting singles... where are those other singles here? not to be found.
Anyhow, the band IS still rocking, their new lp Greenland will be out later this spring, and a newly recorded "hits" collection entitled "Greatest Hits Redux" is also out.
All in all, I like what IS here, but I am equally disappointed at what's left out. As a picture of Cracker between 1991 and 1994 it's not even complete, and as a picture of the band's career as a whole (as the title would suggest) it is severely lacking.

cool video with a message.......2004-08-11
This DVD has the uncut version of Where Are We Runnin'. In it, you have scenes of nudity (including Lenny's behind) and drug use, but is done to show the result of excess in one's life (whether it's sex or drugs). It is done well and makes it's point. Another point is that this video is hardly shown on TV, and when it is, it's always cut short. Here you get it in it's entirety.
Other than the video, there's a ten-minute behind-the-scenes look at the making of Baptism. Here you hear how Lenny came up with the songs and his drive for perfection. A short, but well-shot look behind-the-scenes. Definitely worth a look.
