5 out of 5 stars Marvelous!.......2007-09-13

This is a marvelous movie for those who love period pieces and are romantics at heart. There are obstacles to overcome. The heroine of the story is an upright, moral, sweet lady who thinks of others above herself. There was nothing in the movie to make you come away with an icky feeling (no sex scenes, violence, or foul language that I recall). It is an all-around feel-good kind of movie. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Clean, Entertaining, Delightful.......2007-09-10

The movie "The Inheritance" is one of the best movies I have seen. I saw it on TV first, which is what prompted me to buy the DVD. I knew it was a movie I would want to have for years to come. I also wanted my daughters to watch it.

Some movies that are of this type are cheesy and predictable. This one was different. I wasn't sure what was going to happen and was actually surprised by the way things turned out.

The costumes were beautiful, the actors wonderful, and the story believable and refreshing. It was good, clean entertainment that left me feeling uplifted.

I recommend this movie to anyone who cares about goodness and morality and watching movies with your entire family, but I also recommend it on its merit as an interesting story even for those who don't care as much about objectionable language and scenes. It's just a good movie!

4 out of 5 stars Great family video.......2007-09-04

A little corny, perhaps? Yes, but this filmed Louisa May Alcott novel has all the intrigue and romance tween girls used to really enjoy. And it even has horses! There's folly and redemption, sorrow and joy, and an orphan finds a true home. Watch it with your family.

4 out of 5 stars delightful period romp.......2007-08-26

Based on Louisa May Alcott's long-lost debut novel, THE INHERITANCE is a delightful period romp for anyone who loves to get carried away by romance and intrigue.

Edith Adelon (Cari Shayne) lives with the wealthy Hamilton family at their Evenswood estate in Concord, Mass., as a companion for their daughter Amy (Brigitta Dau). Not quite a servant but not quite a member of the family either, Edith's position grows more precarious as the family awaits visitors for the annual Greens Cup ball and horse-race: snooty cousin Ida (Brigid Walsh-Brannagh) and handsome bachelor James Percy (Thomas Gibson) throw even more complications into the mix for poor Edith. When James starts falling for Edith, her lack of breeding and station sets the catalyst for family secrets to be revealed and true destinies to be discovered...

THE INHERITANCE is full of memorable, endearing performances, in particular Tom Conti as the Hamilton patriarch. He turns what could have been a throwaway character into the true heartbeat of the story. Cari Shayne gives a winsome 'Cinderella' quality to the role of the selfless Edith. Meredith Baxter is also very fine as Mrs Beatrice Hamilton. Brigitta Dau and Brigid Walsh-Brannagh do what they can with the most one-dimensional characters in the piece.

Louisa May Alcott's original novel, written when she was only seventeen and later buried in a trunk, was a trite and highly-romanticised variation of the 'Cinderella' story; this 1997 television adaptation gives more backbone to the character of Edith and the entire story flows in a very fresh and appealing way.

For anyone who loves a good old-fashioned romance, THE INHERITANCE is the perfect movie to while away a rainy Saturday afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars A really superb production!!!.......2007-08-20

I haven't read the novella from which the movie is inspired, but I simply revelled in viewing this DVD, and found myself totally riveted by it. "The Inheritance" is an refreshingly interesting, well-made, extremely watchable film, with fine acting and a storyline that does keep one enthralled right to the end. As far as I am concerned, it is the sheer simplicity and unpretentiousness of this nineteenth-century New England romance more than anything else that wins it. Most/all of the actors turn in commendable performances, but Cari Shayne in particular is especially commanding as well as very believable as the good-hearted, modest and highly likeable Edith Adelon, and the last minutes of "The Inheritance" are quite a tribute to the dignified fashion in which the character carries herself all along and the numerous sacrifices she makes.

In brief, I would settle cosily and view "The Inheritance" for a second time any day, and for sure recommend it to others too.

The moving biblical tale of Esther--a humble Jewish girl who saved her people from annihilation and won the heart of the handsome Persian king Xerxes--is the subject of One Night with the King, a lush ode to one of the Old Testament's most inspiring women. Esther, played with spark and confidence by Tiffany Dupont, could perhaps be said to be the first career woman to "have it all"--while also serving her people, and God. The film, shot on location in India, has the feel of the great epics of the '60s--a sensation underscored by the appearance, in small but pivotal roles, of both Omar Sharif and Peter O'Toole. (Even Raiders of the Lost Ark's John Rhys-Davies--"Bad dates!"--echoes earlier desert adventures.) But the film belongs to the willful Esther, who navigates among war, bloodlust, persecution, and terror with the strength of knowing she's serving the Lord, and her people. If the film has a few anachronisms--including the young Esther's suitor, who has blonde streaks and a surfer-dude delivery ("The market was rilly busy today")--its heart and its focus never waver. Fans of biblical tales and well-made drama for the entire family shouldn't miss it. --A.T. Hurley

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2007-09-11

This movie strayed way too much from the original Bible story. If you are an unbeliever and never knew the story of Esther you would wind up very confused watching this! the character of Esther was a breezy and casual woman, when Israelite women in those times were very humble and meek having been broken by the tragedy they had witnessed after being taken into captivity. Although it briefly touches on her losing her parents, her overall attitude does not reflect any seriousness of what was historically going on at the time. It reflects the casualness and rebellion in this modern era. We were very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Is the Acting really the point?.......2007-09-09

My husband and I just finished watching One Night With the King. The point is not the acting ability (or not) its really not the lines, the point is the message we take away in our hearts. My husband is rarely moved by movies, and he was awestruck by the message in the movie. He said it was so apparent how closely our God is with us no matter how much evil is trying to mess with our lives. Our Lord was guiding circumstances the entire time, He protected Esther when she was to be put to death, His Spirit touched those who would be touched. Very inspiring movie, we will buy this one.

3 out of 5 stars Story-telling could have used some work.......2007-09-08

The Story of Esther is a powerful one, but sadly this movie lacked the "umph" it needed to really convey its significance. The movie was shot on location in India which was a valiant effort to make the kingdom of Persia look authentic, but the acting came in fits and blows. Despite the star power, some actors were brilliant in their delivery while others were not. Tiffany Dupont did a nice job as Esther, but there was no consistency throughout the movie. Some actors had British accents, others American, etc. While this shouldn't be a deciding factor on the story-tellting, it is very distracting.

The script: predictably medieval for a time that happened thousands of years earlier.

The costumes and the sets were the best thing about the movie. Not a bad effort but could have been done much better regardless of budget.

3 out of 5 stars Good movie but not true to the original writing.......2007-09-03

I have mixed feelings on this. For one I adore the actress who plays Esther in this story she is precious. I thought the costumes and the set were super Persian, so it was a feast for the eyes! I loved how the characters were portrayed..like the Eunuch. He really made the movie..my issue is more with the screen play and probably the novel this was taken from. We were often scratching our head saying "hmmm what's the point of that discourse????"(this knowing the original story which helped, but if you don't know it, I could see where you might get confused at parts.) I really appreciate that they were very respectful in the way they portrayed their intimate moments, making it one of the few family movies put out today. That said, why didnt they just stick to the historical records;could they not have studied the Greeks better as well?? Were the Greeks the ones who leveled the playing field for the slaves and had true democracy? (visit MT olympia for a cursory review! They gave us the polis (city/states)but they were not the ones who gave us "God made man in His image" = all men , women and slaves are created equal..thats purely Hebrew!)The Persians had the same idealism as the Greeks, so you really didnt have to create this Haman hatred because the Jews were the great fighters of democracy like their Greek enemies ... rather than this revisionist American idea, just the truth would have been so much better! The Jews were a conquered people, so when Mordachi would not bow down to anyone but God..you could see Haman and his hatred of this pompous Jew not bowing to a Persian...that scene would have been much more realistic especially since thats what really did happen! Not only that, but the creation of a misunderstanding of Esther and Xeres really didn't add to the story. For one, we all know that had any king like Xeres suspected infidelity...it would have been "off with her head" so that really leaves you with this feeling of it just doesn't smack real..I mean Eunuchs were Eunuchs for that reason right? The actual history was much better. Another example...If you simply laid out who Xeres truly was, you would totally understand ,like the Bible expects you to, why Esther was scared to death! Esther knew she could live or die on his whim, she saw him put people to death every day... you really didn't have to create an elaborate story for her to be scared of him.....it demeans the real story to portray that she walks through the rain, causing a stir in "Congress" only to invite him to a dinner party. So to inject this thinking in there only destroyed the tried and true story which is super exciting and fits our historical facts we know and find every day in the field of archaeology! I normally am very happy for anything that may even sound Christian, But when people start twisting the bible narratives and they make them unrealistic they take real historical documents and turn them into mythology. After knowing the real story, I really felt they had the perfect plot laid out and could have elaborated fictionally within the actual factual things to make this historically accurate and super facinating. That is why it gets only 3 stars from me..

3 out of 5 stars Not too Queen-like.......2007-08-31

It's rather unfortunate, to put it mildly, that Tiffany Dupont plays Hadassah, the niece of Mordechai in the tale of the Persian Queen Esther. There's nothing queenly about her, pretty though she may be, and gorgeous in royal robes.

Somehow, the trailers that I saw of this movie made it look appealing, and it was a serious disappointment, all the way around. The film has the same 1950s quality as The Ten Commandments (Special Collector's Edition) with Charlton Heston. Lots of great costumes and kingly head shots, very little worth acting, and very little Biblical quality.

That is really a shame. Because King Xerxes (Luke Goss) looks kingly, what with his nice crowns and specially alluring eye makeup and all, and his ever-so-earnest wish for a truly loving wife.

It's also too bad because one really wants, especially, to love Esther's uncle Mordechai (John Rhys-Davies)

But the story of Queen Esther is ever so much more dramatic in the Meggilah, the scroll that is read every year on eve of the 14th day of Adar, when Queen Esther successfully plead with the Babylonian king, Xerxes, to save the Jewish people from Haman's plot to destroy them.

It's too bad, really. This could have been a great movie. Oh well, you can't win them all.

Filmed before (and quite nicely) in 1949, Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story was remade for this admirable 1993 release, executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Splendidly adapted by Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson, the film opens in India during the early 1900s, when young Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is orphaned and sent to England to live in Misselthwaite Manor, the gloomy estate of her brooding and melancholy uncle, Lord Craven (John Lynch). Because the uncle is almost always away on travels, struggling to forget the death of his beloved wife, Mary is left mostly alone to explore the estate. Eventually she befriends the young brother of a staff maid and Lord Craven's apparently crippled son, who has been needlessly bedridden for years. Together the three children restore a neglected garden on the estate grounds, and in doing so they set the stage for a moving reaffirmation of life and love. Filmed with graceful style and careful attention to the intelligence and cleverness of young children, The Secret Garden is that rarest breed of family film that transcends its own generic category, encouraging a sense of wonder and optimism to become a rewarding experience for viewers of any age. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Wings n Things The Secret Garden.......2007-08-16

This master piece addresses many levels of our mind and heart at once. It carries a basic moral lesson that unconditional love heals. It is however much more powerful than that. It engages a (perhaps more mature ) reader into archetypal realms of the mind at large, where we all seek 'our own key', that will open the door to our personal and collective 'hidden' inner sanctuary, haven and place of profound inner healing.
I highly recommend this book for children ( of all ages) with a chronic or physically debilitating illness, when they are feeling most isolated and alone. It offers hope, the potential to 'really believe' in their own possibility of healing..on many levels. Plus the more simple joy, of a magical tale one just might get delightufully lost in for while ...emerging with new sparks of imagination.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret is Out!.......2007-08-04

This is an outstanding version of the classic story. The cinematography, acting and directing are superb.

These musicians are miraculous! Don't miss this talent! Can't wait until their new CD is put on the market!

5 out of 5 stars Top Quality in Children Entertainment.......2007-07-08

I have watched this movie several times in the company of small children who seemed to enjoy the storyline so well.

Mary is young girl from British parents who is born in India and when an earthquake kills them, she is orphaned and sent to live with an uncle in a very sinister looking manor in England. She experiments to find secret passageways (all Gothics are full of secret passageways) but end up finding a secret garden instead. The housekeeper (Maggie Smith does everything she can to limit the child's actions but to no avail, as the girl has a mind of her own.)

The sad tale behind the garden is that the mistress of the manor died giving birth to an invalid child after falling out of the garden swing. The garden is then shut up and forgotten along with the memory of the dead wife.

Mary, Kate Moberly plays a dynamic little girl who continues to explore until she discovers a groaning, crying sound in the night which turns out to be a bedridden cousin. This cousin has been kept bedridden in error by the housekeeper who has misdiagnosed his condition to be something far more serios than it truly is.

Heyden Prowse could plays the crippled male cousin. Mary takes Colin(Heyden) out of doors and eventually he walks. The story is very predictable but nevertheless, done is such a way that it appear new.

This author knows how to tell a tale to children even if you can predict the outcome. it is all in the storytelling and the film maker flattered the book. This is a very endearing story...would bw greart subject matter for children's classrooms.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-13

A good adaptation of a wonderful children's story. More importance is placed on the "magic" of the story than on the faith in the story. Faith, Prayer, Hope and Love of God are what created the magic and this is not emphasized as it is in the book. This was disappointing, but other than that the setting was beautiful and allowed our imaginations to fill in the gaps that were emitted from the movie that F. H. Burnett had written. A wonderful family movie.

Jane Eyre--the mother of all gothic romances--gets abundant passion in this 11-episode BBC miniseries. Young Sian Pattenden is wonderfully willful and impetuous; viewers will immediately identify with the child Jane as she fights against ill-treatment at the home of her aunt and at boarding school. It's a shame to see her grow up into Zelah Clarke--until Clarke asserts her own quiet yet fierce spirit. The plot really starts rolling when Jane takes a position as governess at Thornfield, a handsome estate owned by the imperious and tortured Mr. Rochester (Timothy Dalton, a few years before he became James Bond). From there, this 1983 adaptation rips through the perilous highs and devastating lows of Charlotte Bronte's powerful novel, in which the courtship of these two prickly personalities gets twists and turns galore. Though the visual style is a bit pedestrian, the well-crafted script and skillful performances grow more gripping with every episode. The necessary feverishness springs from simple yet effective means, like macabre laughter floating down the halls of Thornfield. The scenes between Clarke and Dalton crackle with chemistry; Bronte fans will not be disappointed. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie.......2007-09-12

I love this movie. Unlike the newer, American version, it doesn't hack the book to pieces. All my favorite parts of the book are there and it is so wonderful and romantic. Timothy Dalton is too handsome to make a perfect version of Mr. Rochester, but as if being handsome were a crime.... It makes it a very beautiful love story.

5 out of 5 stars I've only seen this version but I think it is perfect.......2007-09-05

Last night I finished re-watching "Jane Eyre" (1983), the BBC mini-series adapted from Charlotte Bronte's Gothic romance novel which is deservingly a classic of English literature with Timothy Dalton (my favorite James Bond) as Mr. Edward Rochester and Zelah Clarke, as Jane Eyre, a poor orphaned 18-year-old girl, a governess at Mr. Rochester's estate, Thornfield. "Jane Eyre" has been one of my most beloved books since I was an 11-years-old girl and the friend of mine gave it to me with the words, "This book is amazing" and so it was and I have read it dozens of times and I am still not tired of it. Its beautiful language, refined, fragrant, and surprisingly fresh, the dialogs, and above all, two main characters, and the story of their impossible love have attracted many filmmakers. "Jane Eyre" has been adapted to TV and big screen many times, 18 according to IMDb. The actors as famous and marvelous as Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles, William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg, George C. Scott and Susannah York, Ciarán Hinds and Samantha Morton have played the couple that had overcome hundreds of obstacles made by society, laws, religion, by the differences in age, backgrounds, experiences, and by the fateful mistakes that would hunt one for many years. Of all these films I've only seen one, 300 minutes long BBC version from 1983 that follows the novel closely and where Timothy Dalton who frequently plays dark, brooding characters does not just played Edward Rochester brilliantly and with class, he WAS Mr. Rochester - sardonic, vibrant, the force of nature, powerful, passionate, sexy, and tormented master of Thornfield. Zelah Clarke was also convincing as sweet, gentle, intelligent and strong Jane who feels deeply and is full of passion mixed with clear reasoning, and quiet but firm willpower.

3 out of 5 stars Jane Eyre DVD.......2007-08-23

This is a great movie and follows the book very well. Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clark are perfect in their parts as Rochester and Jane. Unfortunately the DVD we received has a fuzzy look to it. It looks like it was a copy of a copy of a copy. It is watchable, but a little annoying. That is the reason I gave it three stars instead of five.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Mr. Rochester and Jane, and Faithful to the Book! .......2007-08-13

I decided to borrow four screen versions of "Jane Eyre" from the library to find my favorite. I watched a 1996, a 1997, a 2006, and this one. Timothy Dalton transforms from a haughty, bitter Rochester to one who has fallen in love with the plain, but dimpled Jane. He portrays the constant struggle going on within Rochester, and yet conveys the boyish love he is feeling for his "little Janet". Yes, Mr. Dalton is too attractive for Mr. Rochester, but plays him wonderfully. Zelah Clarke annoyed me the first time I watched it because she seemed to pause so long before speaking her lines. Perhaps this was the director's fault. Anyhow, she still gives a life to Jane that makes her real to me, although she is not as young as Jane should be. Several lines are directly from the book. I admit I don't watch the episodes with Jane as a child repeatedly as I do her adult years. Remember this version is at least 5 hours long, so you have to be a true Charlotte Bronte/Jane Austen type fan to love it as I do. It definitely brings the most life to the book if you are teaching "Jane Eyre", even if you only show some of the episodes and not all. The other members of the cast are equally outstanding.

3 out of 5 stars 1983 Jane Eyre.......2007-07-05

If you had to do a book report on Jane Eyre but didn't want to read it, this is the movie to see. Very acurate comparison with the book, but a little lacking in imagination as far as art direction goes. The acting is fair. Die-hard Jane Eyre fans would love this movie. My biggest complaint with it is the fact that, as it is a television series, there is a break every 20 minutes where the credits are given and the chapter displayed which makes it even longer. If you are looking for good cinematography, script and acting, my favorite is the 2006 Masterpiece Theatre version. It doesn't follow the book as closely, but it is a beuatifully done film.

Product Description

Catch the movie that flew over the fence and into the hearts of millions of cheering fans! It's Disney's ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD, the feel-good film of the year about a young boy praying for a father -- and a struggling baseball team praying for a pennant. Danny Glover plays George Knox, the frustrated coach of the California Angels, a ragtag team of major-league misfits who are down on their luck. But things begin to look up when 11-year-old Roger, their biggest fan, starts giving Knox some winning tips from a real live angel named Al (Christopher Lloyd). The team miraculously climbs back into the pennant race ... all the while learning to believe in themselves. With its heavenly mix of outrageous comedy, dazzling special effects, and amazing baseball action, Disney's ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD is an entertainment home run for the whole family!

This effects-heavy, 1994 remake of the 1951 film starring Janet Leigh and Keenan Wynn is all computer-generated pizzazz, with none of the charm or imagination of the original. Aimed squarely at children this time, the story focuses on a boy who gets some divine intervention on behalf of his favorite ball club. Christopher Lloyd plays the head angel, and Danny Glover is good as the team's manager, but the real star of the film--for better or worse--is the software that makes a glowing, celestial presence on the field seem real. --Tom Keogh

This 1988 animated feature from Don Bluth (An American Tail) focuses on an orphaned young dinosaur, Littlefoot, who has to make his way to the paradise of the Great Valley in order to survive a plague. Along the way, he meets up with some other dinos from different species, and they all bond and travel together. On the way, they have plenty of adventures. Even with elements of suspense, this is a pretty relaxed movie that isn't in a particular hurry to roll out its story. Kids will like the originality of the concept, and the themes of friendship and cooperation are well woven into the fabric of the entertainment, plus the music is great. Bluth's artwork looks good, though--as always--he never seems to quite catch up with the quality of the Disney machine. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars You just can't beat the original.......2007-08-13

Before Littlefoot and company were turned into a shameless commerical cash cow there was the original Land Before Time. The story is simple, the art style unique, and the James Horner score perfect. This is one of the few movies from my childhood that I continue to watch, and though this is partly out of nostalgia it is also because the story is timeless and the execution near-flawless.

If you are a parent reading this review, this is the film to get, although some of the material may frighten or otherwise affect sensitive children. I still tear up at the infamous "mother" scene, which puts even Bambi to shame.

It saddens me every time a new Land Before Time sequel is introduced, as none come close to the quality of the original. (The new films are so bad that they need catchy third-rate sing-a-longs to get kids to watch them.) If I could give this movie ten stars, I would. So here they are: *********/10

5 out of 5 stars Land Before Time DVD.......2007-05-20

As cute and charming as it was when it was first released in the 80's.

4 out of 5 stars Touching movie snif snif.........2007-05-14

Well this movie is exellent for kids and for grown ups like me, very touching teaching the values of frienship, honesty etc. Although it says subtitles only in spanish and french, as a sourprise.. it came with english subtitles also.
Now, talking about quality.. no 5 stars there, it has the same exact quality as the original VHS one.. meaning.. VERY POOR! You can tell miles away that it is a movie from the 80's as this is an Anniversary edition i thought they were going to renew some scenes and make it more "new" but nothing.. same bad quality

5 out of 5 stars my girls can't get enough of Little Foot! .......2007-03-31

My (almost)3 and 5 yr old girls love these movies. this is the favorite of course, being the first one. I don't mind watching it again and again with them. good lessons.

5 out of 5 stars The Land Before Time.......2007-03-24

My son is just getting into dinosaurs, he loves the movie Land Before Time. The part where the mother dies made him sad though, he related it to me and told me he did not want me to go away! We have not watched it as much as other DVD's he has, but it may be a little too mature for him. I do like how he has learned a few of the terms and names of the types of dinosaurs.

Warm, funny, and imaginative, Lilo & Stitch is the best animated feature the Walt Disney Studios have produced in years. On the planet Turo, mad scientist Jumba Jookiba (voice by David Ogden Stiers) has created a miniature monster programmed for destruction. When the monster escapes to Earth, it's adopted as a pet and named "Stitch" by Lilo (Daveigh Chase), a lonely little Hawaiian girl. Lilo and her older sister Nani (Tia Carrere) have been struggling to stay together since their parents died. Stitch and Lilo share some hilarious adventures, evading welfare officer Cobra Bubbles (Ving Rhames) and galactic police agents. They learn the timely lesson that a family can be something you're born into--or something you assemble. A warmth and sincerity that recall The Iron Giant and the films of Hiyao Miyazaki make Lilo a delightful fantasy adults and children can truly enjoy together. --Charles Solomon

Description

"As Elvis might put it, you can't help falling in love with LILO & STITCH." -- Claudia Puig, USA TODAY. This movie is a piece of junk. A "ET" that looks more like a demon is the hero?....COME ON!!! Don't lose your time over it.

"Lilo and Stitch" was pretty colourful and suprising, I thought. Bit of a treat to watch, actually. Wasn't quite like a Disney, and yet it was. Sees an experimental alien Stitch lifeform crashland with a single mother and her daughter, Lilo. Worth a look for fans of unique animation.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, some mature content.......2007-03-13

Overall the DVD was good and very much appropriate for young children. However, after a couple of weeks it had fallen to the back of his preference list. We've not watched it in over a year now. I guess this isn't so different from any other DVD we have.

I would recommend this for young children. It does have a few concepts that are not appropriate, but are presented in a way that is way over the heads of children adn does have a few scenes that very concervative parents may term violent.

5 out of 5 stars A child at heart............2007-02-24

This is one of Disney's more captivating modern movies. My husband and I don't have children, but we wore out the first VHS watching it. The acerbic nature of that little blue outcast is captivating. The basic morals that the story plays out are good for kids. But the humor keeps me buying copies as I burn them up.

French for "Orchestra Seats," Avenue Montaigne offers an outsider's perspective on an insular world (the original title is Fauteuils d'Orchestre). After bidding adieu to her grandmother (Suzanne Flon in her final performance), sunny Jessica (Cécile De France, L'Auberge Espagnole) moves from Mâcon to Paris. Upon securing a job as a waitress in a popular café, she meets high-strung soap star Catherine (Valérie Lemercier), burnt-out pianist Jean-François (Albert Dupontel), and secretive art collector Jacques (Claude Brasseur), who comes equipped with a pretty girlfriend and a handsome son (Christopher Thompson). Though the tousled Jessica has little in common with these posh Parisians, she affects each of their lives in ways both big and small. Directed by Danièle Thompson (La Bûche) and co-written with her son, Christopher, Avenue Montaigne serves as the flipside to French phenomenon When the Cat's Away, in which a young woman meets the people in her neighborhood while searching for an errant feline. In this case, the surroundings are more upscale, but the residents are just as susceptible to fear and insecurity. Though the idea of a sympathetic look at the upper class will surely strike some as off-putting, Thompson makes it work. The genuine affection she feels for her characters--privileged and underprivileged alike--and the grace with which she keeps several plot strands going at once proves that the spirit of Robert Altman lives on in the most unlikely of places. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars "When Time Passing Becomes Time Remaining" ~ The Talents And Possessions That Define A Life.......2007-09-04

Note: French with English subtitles.

Synopsis: Jessica (Cecile de France) leaves her home in the provinces and moves to Paris in the hope of finding a better life. Fortune smiles on her when she lands a job as a waitress in a cafe located in a high rent district frequented by the rich and artistic. As she interacts with the café's patrons their hopes and dreams are revealed. Jessica and the audience eventually discover that the rewards that come with talent and possessions doesn't necessarily bring fulfillment in life.

Critique: Released in '06 the film `Avenue Montaigne' is an undiscovered gem that can be watched over and over again, each time revealing some new and beautiful facet of a profoundly simple but elegant tale. Moving subtly from comedy, to romance, to drama the film shines a light into the heart and soul of its characters revealing not only the persona on the outside but the longing within. The acting is superb, the storyline and dialogue illuminating and the Paris backdrop is absolutely beautiful. Add to that a nostalgic soundtrack that captures the Parisian spirit to perfection and you have a film that you'll never tire of viewing. One of my favorite French films!

My Rating: -5 Stars-.

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-07-19

If you're looking for serious drama then you're in the wrong place. I would describe AVENUE MONTAIGNE as a "fun" movie. In many ways it reminded me of THE SPANISH APARTMENT (or L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE): both consisted of a bunch of colorful characters, who are trying to find their way in this crazy world of ours. It should be no surprise that Cecile France was in both films. She has a way of connecting with other actors on screen. She was a delight. Other notable actors in AVENUE were the "soap" actress, the pianist and the auctioner's son. If you just want to see a movie for just strictly entertainment value, then I highly recommend AVENUE MONTAIGNE.

3 out of 5 stars A Slice of Paris.......2007-04-30

(3 1/2 *'s) `Avenue Montaigne' operates on the premise that all Parisians seek the good life. Offering a cross-section of the French dream, the film digs deeper with a "can't buy me happiness" theme stretching through intersecting lives.

Jessica (Ce'cile De France) is a high-life wanna-be who takes care of her grandmother in a nursing home. The elder reminisces that she took menial labor to enjoy vicariously the high art, food, and fashion of Paris. Emulating her grandmother, Jessica seeks a job at a café where they deliver, but will only break tradition of hiring waiters when they're in a bind. As a vivacious courier and waitress she meets the people who allegedly have fulfilled their dreams. There's Catherine (Val'erie Lemercier), a prima donna actress who isn't satisfied with the lucrative contracts she's offered. In order to achieve a high level of art, she stumbles over tables and chairs for a chance to court Sydney Pollack (cameo, himself), looking for a lead in his film. (Some of her foot-in-mouth tendencies make for some of the funniest moments.) Jean-Francois Laforte (Albert Dupontel) is a celebrated pianist who has all the amenities and filled concert halls, but his real desire is to enrich the uninitiated. His wife is his manager who can see only the material benefits of her gifted husband. Jacques, an elder art dealer wishes to sell out his collection before interest is lost, but his teacher son, Frederic (Christopher Thompson), is too idealistic. He's divorced and must watch his widower father flaunt his attractive new mistress while discovering the siren is predictably only interested in his father's money. Then, there's an elder woman who, having no musical talent of her own, is a purveyor of others' talents. She relishes the music. The movie displays great irony, for Jessica and the music purveyor, although outside of the circle of the affluent talent, seem oddly more satisfied than the successful people they admire.

`Avenue Montaigne' may not be as substantive or profound as French movies like 'L'Enfant' or 'Ponette,' but it is easily likable with characters who are accessible and make empathetic connections with the audience. Warmly engaging, sometimes funny, but often wise, this movie is a heartwarming alternative to a boulevard of broken dreams. The effect of the movie is like creme brule,' sweet, light, but very satisfying.

4 out of 5 stars Jessica does Paris.......2007-03-16

Jessica (gamin-like Cecile de France from "The Spanish Apartment) arrives in Paris without a sou in her pocket but within minutes nabs a prime waitress job in a smart, stylish, up to this point type of café that only hires men as waiters, Restaurant on the Avenue Montaigne, close to the Champs Elysee' with the Eiffel Tower looming nearby.
Though "Avenue Montaigne" ("Fauteuils D'orchestre" in France or "Orchestra Seats") is very fairy tale-like, there is actually a very good reason for Jessica's hiring: the restaurant is short of help and the very next night three major events are taking place nearby: a big auction selling off the contents of an entire apartment filled with names like Braque, Brancusi and Modigliani belonging to an art collector played by the legendary Claude Brasseur, a major piano recital featuring virtuoso pianist Jean-François Lefort (Albert Dupontel) and the opening of a Feydeau farce starring TV Soap star, (actress Catherine Versen played by Valérie Lemercier) looking to land a prime Motion Picture about Simone de Beauvoir. Jessica swirls in and out of every one of these stories having a positive effect on all with her sunny sweetness and disarming honesty. There are definitely shades of "Amelie" and "Emma" at work here. "Avenue Montaigne" is as slight and light as a Crepe and de France, Brasseur and Lemercier hit all the right notes, acting-wise which sounds a lot easier than it is as the genre of light comedy is pretty much dead today and these actors are remarkably spot on here.
No one in the world makes this kind of film as well as the French and director Daniele Thompson is definitely up to the task: her film exudes warmth and a charismatic charm that is damn near impossible to resist.

Bill Bixby plays a 19th-century gambler who inherits responsibility for three orphans, but the kids in turn have something of value: a huge gold nugget. This Disney film from 1975 is an enjoyable potboiler with its sentimentality under control and the accent on laughs, most of which are provided, not unexpectedly, by Tim Conway and Don Knotts as thieves who want to get their hands on the treasure. An easy, safe film for children. You can't go wrong with this. --Tom Keogh

Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and kid friendly.......2007-07-29

Don Knotts and Tim Conway are about the funniest pair ever and this is a great movie to watch with your kids. I enjoy watching comedies with my kids and there isn't a whole lot out nowadays that you can safely watch without embarrassing moments.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-07-05

This DVD was poor quality, and you could not really enjoy the movie, good movie, just poor quality, plus I thought it would have more of Tim and Don in it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant.......2007-05-07

If you are looking for a clean funny movie without sex, violence, and cursing this is the right movie. It is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Very family orient and I recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars First they blew into town, then they BLEW it up!.......2007-03-22

Excellent family comedy! Don Knotts & Tim Conway are at their best!
Three orphaned siblings are forced upon confirmed bachelor Russel Donovan(Bixby) in a 19nth century boom town of Quake City, California. After an earthquake shakes the area, the children find a large gold nugget worth tens of thousands of dollars. But their newfound wealth is causing more problems than it's solving, so they decide to "give" the gold to 2 bumbling outlaws, Theodore & Amos (Knotts&Conway). But the only way they can get the gold is to steal it from the bank vault where it's being held for safekeeping.
Quotes:
(Amos makes Theodore angry)
Theodore: You couldn't see through a barbed wire fence!
Amos: Theodore?
Theodore: That head of yours couldn't hold straw!
Amos: Theodore?
Theodore: You couldn't sell hacksaws in a jail!
-----------------
Amos: How much money do you figure that dudes got in front of him?
Theodore: About five hundred.
Amos: Five hundred? WOW! You know, that'll be, uh, that's two hundred apiece!
