Surely even the French, with their legendary love of all things Jerry Lewis, will be sated by the Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Collection: Vol. 2, a three-disc package containing five comedy-musicals released on DVD for the first time. It would be a supreme stretch to call any of the five films in question (You're Never Too Young, Artists and Models, Living It Up, Pardners, and Hollywood or Bust) a classic, but then, anyone looking for challenging storylines and deep characterizations probably wouldn't be here in the first place. What the films offer instead are various breezy diversions, in the form of Martin, the suave, smooth talking cad and crooner; a parade of lovely young women (Dorothy Malone, Anita Ekberg, Janet Leigh, and Shirley MacLaine among them); some terrific musical numbers that are the highlights of their respective films; and, of course, the antics of Lewis, whose capacity for slapshtick and mugging is apparently inexhaustible. By this time (the mid-1950s), the two had already fit comfortably into their respective personae, with Lewis as the naïve, ingenuous rube and Martin right there to take advantage of him. In Artists and Models, Martin's aspiring painter cops ideas from the frenzied dreams of his comics-obsessed roommate (Lewis, natch) and creates a hit comic of his own, a simple story that's derailed by an absurd and unnecessary subplot involving the U.S. government and some enemy agents. Living It Up, adapted from an earlier musical called Nothing Sacred, finds Lewis cajoled by Martin, his doctor (talk about a stretch!), into pretending that he's suffering from radiation poisoning so they can both enjoy a lavish trip to New York courtesy of a newspaper trying to boost circulation by playing up the "dying" man's plight. Hollywood or Bust, a combination road picture and gentle spoof of the movie biz, casts Martin as a gambler and con man accompanying film fanatic Lewis on a trip to Tinseltown, while Pardners is a Wild West romp ("Jerry Lewis as a gunslinger" about sums it up) and You're Never Too Young puts Lewis totally in his element as he impersonates a 12-year-old boy in order to escape bad guy Raymond Burr. The plots are thin, at best, and the songs are hardly Oscar caliber. Still, the two stars have an undeniable chemistry, and the musical set pieces are highly entertaining, most notably a sort of pas de duh (sic) between Lewis and MacLaine in Artists and Models and an eye-popping, show-stopping dance number in Living It Up. In the end, it all basically comes down to one's capacity to endure Lewis' manic mannerisms (it's worth noting that by Hollywood or Bust, the pair's last collaboration, he's pretty thoroughly upstaged by a Great Dane). If even this cornucopia isn't sufficient, perhaps a move to France is in order. The set contains no bonus material. --Sam Graham

Product Description

LIVING IT UP: The 1954 Martin-and-Lewis romp Living It Up is an amusing remake of the 1937 comedy classic Nothing Sacred. More specifically, it is the film version of the Broadway musical Hazel Flagg, which was based on Nothing Sacred. The heroine of the original undergoes a sex change to become feckless Homer Flagg (Jerry Lewis), who is led to believe that he's dying of radiation poisoning. Manhattan newspaperwoman Wally Cook (Janet Leigh), hoping to improve circulation of her paper, convinces her boss, Oliver Stone (Fred Clark), to fete Homer as a hero with an all-expenses-paid trip to the Big Apple. Meanwhile, Homer learns from local doctor Steve (Dean Martin) that he isn't dying at all. But Steve talks Homer into taking advantage of the celebrity treatment bestowed on him by Wally, and a good time is had by all — until medical specialist Dr. Egelhofer (Sig Rumann) insists upon examining Homer. Highlights include a hilarious bit at Yankee Stadium, and an energetic jitterbug number featuring Jerry Lewis and Sheree North. The handful of songs retained from Hazel Flagg include "Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York."
YOU'RE NEVER TOO YOUNG: You're Never Too Young is a slapstick-with-songs remake of the 1944 Ray Milland/Ginger Rogers vehicle The Major and the Minor. Dean Martin plays the Milland part, while Ginger's shoes are filled by...Jerry Lewis? Lewis plays an apprentice barber who inadvertently crosses a homicidal jewel thief (Raymond Burr), and equally inadvertently hightails it out of town with the crook's jewels in his possession. Desperate to escape the crook's clutches, and lacking the necessary funds for a train ticket, Lewis disguises himself as a 12-year-old boy so he can travel half fare. He latches onto Dean, a music teacher heading for an all-girls school. After innumerable routines sparked by Lewis's adolescent disguise, the jewel thief catches up with him, leading to a rollicking climactic speedboat chase. Dean Martin has plenty of opportunities to serenade leading lady Diana Lynn (who'd played a supporting role in The Major and the Minor), while Jerry Lewis is in peak form doing his usual "waah-waah-waah" schtick. The original Billy Wilder/Charles Brackett script for The Major and the Minor was reshaped into You're Never Too Young by future bestselling novelist Sidney Sheldon.
ARTISTS AND MODELS: Bearing very little relation to the 1937 Paramount musical of the same name, Artists and Models is a lavish, girl-filled vehicle for the popular team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Martin plays Rick Todd, a comic-book artist who is under fire from his publisher (Eddie Mayehoff), who complains that Rick's work isn't gory enough. Lewis plays Eugene Fullstack, Rick's roommate, who while asleep dreams up elaborate comic-book plots and garishly costumed superheroes. Eugene's nightmares help Rick become a success; meanwhile, our two heroes romance their luscious neighbors, artist Dorothy Malone and rambunctious model Shirley MacLaine (who during one song wrestles Eugene to the floor and sits on his chest!) Eugene's overworked imagination somehow attracts the attention of a group of Russian spies, who attempt to abduct Eugene during the annual Artists and Models Ball. Director Frank Tashlin uses Artists and Models as an excuse for some of the wildest sight-gags seen in a mid-1950s film. At one point, the director contrives to stuff a gag in Shirley MacLaine's mouth. Tashlin also exhibits his ongoing fascination with female breasts and legs by giving ample screen time to the natural attributes of co-stars Anita Ekberg and Zsa Zsa Gabor. One of the best of the Martin/Lewis efforts, Artists and Models suffers only from being about 20 minutes too long.
PARDNERS: This Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis romp is liberally based on the 1936 Bing Crosby film Rhythm on the Range. Set around 1910, the film stars Lewis as the pampered son of female tycoon Agnes Moorehead. Yearning to return to the Wild West where his father was a famed peacekeeper, Lewis purchases a prize bull, destined for the ranch inherited by rodeo star Dean Martin. It so happens that Martin and Lewis' late fathers were "pardners", so Martin takes it upon himself to protect Lewis from the various and sundry tough hombres in the region. Through a series of bizarre plot convolutions, Lewis gains a reputation as a rootin' tootin' gunslinger, and in his hubris he decides to round up a gang of outlaws headed by Jeff Morrow. As a result, he nearly gets himself blown to smitherines, but Martin shows up in the nick of time to rescue Lewis and help him capture the bad guys. Lori Nelson and Jackie Loughery supply the film's peripheral romantic angle. Pardners ends with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis turning to the camera and promising that they'll keep on making pictures for their faithful fans; ironically, the team was breaking up even while the cameras were turning.
HOLLYWOOD OR BUST: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made their last joint film appearance in the girl-filled musical Hollywood or Bust. The thinnish plot finds inveterate film fan Jerry making a cross-country journey to Tinseltown for the purpose of meeting his favorite screen star, the buxom Anita Ekberg (the film's title, need it be added, has a double meaning). Dean goes along for the ride, hoping to expand his bankroll during a Las Vegas stopover. The boys are joined by a third traveller, an enormous Great Dane named Mr. Bascomb; along the way, the trio becomes a quartet when pretty Pat Crowley hitches a ride. The finale takes place in Hollywood, naturally, as Jerry wreaks havoc at a film studio which looks suspiciously like Paramount. All reports indicate that Hollywood and Bust was an unhappy shoot, with Jerry Lewis behaving so obstreperously that director Frank Tashlin ordered him off the set and told him to go home until he learned to behave himself; to this day, Lewis cannot bring himself to watch the film. Happily, the animosity between the two stars never comes across on screen, and as a result Hollywood or Bust is a most enjoyable diversion.

A nightclub act with a handsome singer and an anarchic monkey-boy became a potent box-office force in the early 1950s. Although their wild live antics never translated intact to the screen, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were an instant movie hit; they had two films in the box-office top ten of 1951, and another two in the top ten of 1952. Paramount repays this effort with its Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Collection, Volume One, which gathers most of their early efforts at the studio.

Martin and Lewis were introduced in 1949's My Friend Irma, a big-screen version of a popular radio show. The boys are in support, but their high jinks were the hit of the movie, and their portion of screen time ballooned in My Friend Irma Goes West, which they basically take over. Both movies are enjoyable comedies, and especially in the sequel Lewis's lunatic style of mugging, vocal calisthenics, and physical shtick makes him look like an animal uncaged.

Not included in this set is their first starring vehicle, At War with the Army. The next six consecutive films are here, beginning with one of their best, 1951's That's My Boy. Jerry plays the athletically hopeless son of a famous football hero (Eddie Mayehoff, a funny man). It's a measure of how much Lewis had grabbed the public's imagination that Dino doesn't show up until the film is 20 minutes old. (Lewis later wrote that he arranged for "That's Amore" to be included in The Caddy to bolster Martin's popularity.) Also from 1951, Sailor Beware is a service comedy with some hilarious sequences--Lewis conducting a male chorus, for instance, or undergoing a slightly surreal medical exam--and the team still has a freshness despite the movie formula. Their timing together in the punchdrunk-boxer routine shows some of the chemistry they must have had onstage.

Jumping Jacks (1952) is the least of Martin & Lewis's service comedies, with Lewis as a showbiz performer who pretends to be in the military as a favor to Dean. The Stooge, same year, is one of their best teamings, this time with a touch of pathos along with the laughs: Martin is a self-centered singer who can't acknowledge that his hired stooge is the reason his act is boffo. Along with the backstage stuff, the movie demonstrates how skilled Lewis's singing was, even in a comic purpose.

1953's Scared Stiff is a warmed-over remake of the Bob Hope comedy The Ghost Breakers, and shows that the boys were overworked; the story is lame and the clowning feels more desperate (although Lewis has a few moments imitating co-star Carmen Miranda). In The Caddy, from the same year, Martin indulges his real-life passion for golf, and Lewis plays the neglected caddy. It's a return to form, borrowing a Stooge vibe, and boasts an odd framing story with the boys playing a nightclub act very much like Martin & Lewis.

Unless you're already a fan, your enthusiasm for this set will depend on your tolerance for Jerry Lewis and his manic, childlike dementia. Either you'll laugh, resist, or become fascinated at the naked, look-at-me neediness of his act. Dean Martin can be appreciated for the difficult job of playing straight man to this craziness (notice, too, how his singing voice comes into its own, from imitation Bing Crosby in the first couple of pictures to the familiar, relaxed style of vintage Dino). The DVD set provides no supporting features, but this is the first chapter of a hugely profitable and popular showbiz phenomenon. Just one more thing: "Who's your little whoozis? Who's your toitle dove?" --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Dean & Jerry.......2007-09-15

Great stuff. Dean & Jerry had a really good chemistry and are truley a joy to watch. Although film making has changed over the years, it's still fun to go back in time and see GREAT comedy.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SET! SOME EARLY FAVORITES , BUT MISSING ONE FILM!.......2007-08-04

This is a really good set for any fan of this classic comedy team's films. This has almost all the early stuff, but where is "At War With The Army"???? it does include the "Irma" films which started it all! The other five films on this set are some of their best! The DVD transfers are very good, but 1/2 star deducted for not including a great movie! 4 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Sailor Beware.......2007-07-04

Sailor Beware is one of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis Funnies movies. But it is very importantly funny to me because my father was one of the sailors in this movie when it was filmed in San Diego Navy. My father was in boot camp at the time. In fact in the seen where they are doing there exercise my father is about the 5th or 6th person behind Dean Martin. We laugh allot about this seen because my father hesitates in going down in one or more of his exercises. My father served 4 years in the Korean War. But this movie is the only thing we talk about. A great movie.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all Martin and Lewis fans!.......2007-07-01

I am thankful that Paramount took the time to present this collection of the funniest works by the comedy team of Martin and Lewis. Personal favorite...Sailor Beware! I hope that we will be able to see Money From Home and Three Ring Circus real soon on DVD. You will laugh for hours with the works of the crooner and the clown...Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-05-21

2 out of 5 stars Not Captivating.......2007-04-08

I was predisposed to like this film, but was disappointed in the weakness of the plot and the hackneyed one-line put downs constantly exchanged between the two protangonists. It starts with the two vaudeville stars doing their routine on stage, while in the wings a girl is waiting with her dad for a "shotgun" style wedding for either of the two. They escape, leaving Australia looking for any kind of available employment. It turns out deep sea diving is the sole remaining option.

Princess Lala, who is half Scottish becomes the romantic target of both suitors. The indingenous people arrange a marriage ceremony whereby both men are going to marry her, although neither realize they are sharing a bride. This plan is destroyed by another authority on the island who wants to make her his latest bride to add to his collection. It's at this point that the plot breaks down and it seems they wanted to just end the script in the alloted time.

Cameo appearances by well-known movie stars of the era are interspersed. If you don't watch carefully you'll miss them however. The most creative part is the conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Road to Bali.......2007-03-16

Got it very fast and it is a great movie. Of course with old Blue eyes and Bob Hope. It had to be.

2 out of 5 stars Forgettable.......2007-02-12

The plot was OK, but the songs were forgettable--almost painful--and the dancing was amateurish. I found myself fast forwarding through a lot. However, the comedic exchanges between Bing and Bob were fun.

3 out of 5 stars Slapstick with a Setting Reminiscent of Gilligan's Island.......2007-01-17

Two comedians entertain us. While traveling, one sleeps below the train (risky!). When playing on bagpipes and in Scottish suits, they kick each other. There are other humorous scenes throughout this flick.

They land on a tropical island somewhere in the southern Pacific Ocean. Each one assumes that he will be the one to marry Princess Lalah. And, similar to the characters in Gilligan's Island, they have to deal with such things as wild beasts (in this case, the affections of a gorilla), natives and their poison darts, an angry volcano, and the imminent prospect of being beheaded. So who actually gets to marry Princess Lalah? I will not spoil the ending by revealing it.

2 out of 5 stars Good Times Video...Skip it.......2007-08-26

What Dean & Jerry fan does not know of this movie?
My intention is to save those of us collectors time and money.

The Good Times Video version appears to have been recorded from a vhs - that was itself recorded from another vhs without Time Base Correction - about 10 times.

Add to that, its 1.33:1. Just last weekend I saw a Letterbox version on AMC...that's the copy I'm looking for.

Yep - that bad. Perhaps it was better than nothing, but now that something has hit the market, do yourself a favor, skip this version.

5 out of 5 stars Martin and Lewis at their funniest!.......2007-08-11

This movie featured the comedic talents of the one and only Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. Their only movie not released by Paramount. The comedy surrounds the antics of life at the army barracks for these two and their superiors. Funniest part...Jerry Lewis in a dress! If you enjoy these two then you will like their first outing, "At War With the Army'!

1 out of 5 stars Not good quality.......2007-03-25

The movie is a good one but the quality of the dvd is bad! The sound is very low, picture is jumpy (I'm not sure how that happens on dvd?). I sent mine back and got the Martin and Lewis Collector's Edition with "At War with the Army" Movie included. I recomend that one instead. 6 1/2 hours of FUNNY!

5 out of 5 stars At War With The Army.......2007-01-15

Fantastic, What better way to take a walk down memory lane, than to watch some Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin,to lift your spirits.I really enjoyed every second of it, i also bought the 10 dvd collection of jerry Lewis.Jerry Lewis - The Legendary Jerry Collection (The Bellboy / Cinderfella / The Delicate Delinquent / The Disorderly Orderly / The Errand Boy / The Family Jewels / The Ladies Man / The Nutty Professor / The Patsy / The Stooge)Must have for any fan.

1 out of 5 stars Jerry Lewis' Worst Movie.......2006-10-28

I admit I gave up on this movie after about 50 minutes. But up to that point the whole "comedy" revolved around Dean Martin bullying and shouting at Jerry Lewis, for no obvious reason. I am a life-long Jerry Lewis fan, I adore many of his movies, but not this one. It is pointless tripe. I never thought I'd give up on a Jerry Lewis movie, without watching it all the way through. But after 50 minutes, I felt like shouting back at Dean Martin for his odious carry on in this film. Whoever wrote the script doesn't know the first thing about humour. What a tedious movie!!!!

Description

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis - the crooner and the clown. They were the best-known comedy duo of their day. When they performed, whether on stage, television, or in the movies, the sky was the limit and the laughter was endless.

Disk 1 At War With the Army Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis' first starring vehicle together, AT WARE WITH THE ARMY, is a hilarious slapstick comedy about two buddies' mishaps at an army training camp during World War II. Dean Martin is Vic Puccinelli, a newly promoted sergeant who finds himself head over heels in love with pretty Polly Bergen. Desperate, Martin enlists the aid of his bumbling pal Alvin Corwin (Jerry Lewis) to help him win her over. See the laugh-out-loud comedy that catapulted this talented duo to fame.

Disk 2 Colgate Comedy Hour I & II Episode 1: When it came to comedy in the early 1950s, no one was hotter than the team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. When they hosted The Colgate Comedy Hour, they brought their unique brand of nuttiness to one of TV's best comedy-variety shows. Watch as the smooth crooning style of Dean Martin and the slapstick lunacy of Jerry Lewis mix hilariously with their guests. Featuring the Polly Bergen and Dean Martin dues "You and Your Beautiful Eyes," and the dancing of Bob Fosse and Mary Ann Niles.

Episode 2: The craziness continues with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in this next edition of The Colgate Comedy Hour. The laughs keep building as Dean and Jerry welcome guests Connie Russell, Ray Malone, Danny Arnold (who later created the hit sitcom Barney Miller) and others. For any fan of Martin and Lewis, or early television in general, this VHS/DVD is a "must have!"

Disk 3 Colgate Comedy Hour III & IV Episode 1: When Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, the top comedy act of the 1950s, hosted The Colgate Comedy Hour, everyone knew what to expect - lots of laughs! These two episodes from one of television's earliest variety shows offer the singer and comedian at their hilarious best. Laugh along as they welcome Dorothy Dandridge, Danny Arnold (who later created the hit TV sitcom Barney Miller), actors Donald MacBride, Marion Marshall, and Bob & Eddie Mayo in this funny edition of the early TV variety show.

Episode 2: More laughs as in store as Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis host another episode of The Colgate Comedy Hour. Dean sings with Helen O'Connell, Bob Fosse dances with Mary Ann Niles, and Jerry wreaks his usual comedy havoc throughout the hour. It's Martin and Lewis at their funniest.

Disk 4 Colgate Comedy Hour V & VI Episode 1: In the early 1950s when variety shows were the staple of that new invention called "television," people stayed home to watch. When Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis hosted The Colgate Comedy Hour, viewers knew to expect the unexpected. And that's exactly what they got. The world's hottest comedy act of the time welcomes Jack Benny (as "Phil Abrams"), Vera Miles, Milton Frome, Sylvia Hickle, Hank Mann, Margery Maude, Marvin Middlebird, and The Nick Castle Dancers. Dean also sings one of his classics, "Mambo Italiano."

Episode 2: In this next episode of the classic TV variety program, Martin and Lewis continue to show why they were the world's Number One comedy act. There are plenty of laughs as Dean and Jerry continue to ply their trademarked brand of comedy. Nobody is immune to their comedic assault, especially guest stars Margaret Dumont, Ray Malone, and Mike Mazurki. For any Martin and Lewis fan, or for anyone who just wants to laugh, this is a must-see!

Disk 5 Colgate Comedy Hour VII In the early 1950s, anybody who was big in show business appeared on The Colgate Comedy Hour, and at the time, there was nobody bigger than Martin and Lewis. Debonair crooner Dean Martin and nutty Jerry Lewis made an unlikely duo. But the combination ignited laughs all over the world. See for yourself why hosts Dean and Jerry were the best, as they welcome Dick Humphreys, Gretchen Houser, the singing group The Treniers and others in this look back at a more innocent, but funny time in television.

At The Movies with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis After Dean and Jerry conquered the world with their live performances, they next tackled films. And they did so just as successfully. Here are trailers from some classic Martin and Lewis movies - The Caddy; Hollywood or Bust; Jumping Jacks; Living It Up; Pardners; Sailor Beware; Scared Stiff; Three Ring Circus; and You're Never Too Young.

4 out of 5 stars Great Fun........2007-04-10

Martin and Lewis pull out the stops for these live TV shows. Better than their movies. Would have rated it 5 stars except for the sound quality. Because of the primitive recording equipment of the 50s, some lines are hard to catch. The included movie is typical ML comedy. Picture quality is OK, but not as good as others I've purchased.

2 out of 5 stars MARTIN & LEWIS.......2007-01-13

STRICTLY FOR DIE-HARD FANS ONLY. THE EARLY "JERRY LEWIS" WORK GETS ON MY NERVES, HIS TALENT IMPROVED TOWARDS THE MID 1950s IN HIS FILMS WHEN HE CREATED A CHARACTER THAT EVOKES SYMPATHY AND LIKEABILITY. BUT HIS EARLY WORK IS TOO MAD, THAT NASAL VOICE HE USED TO ADOPT IS SOOO IRRITATING.

FOR LEWIS GENIUS, BUY "THE DISORDERLY ORDERLY" "ARTISTS AND MODELS" - BETTER CHOICE THAN THESE TV APPEARANCES ON "COLGATE COMEDY HOUR".
THE SHOW CHOICES WERE SO RANDOM TOO.

2 STARS ONLY

4 out of 5 stars This is one of the better buys.......2006-01-26

Martin & Lewis. I didn't get get "it" when I was younger because by the time I was watching the old movies on reruns they were already a non-team. Only by watching these old Colgate shows can a person recapture the magic that made them headlines. Jerry's was the free spirit of nonsense but he needed Dean to pull him back into line once in while and if you watch carefully (very carefully) you can see the dynamics of how they worked off each other's best comic features. Terrific comedy team that was at their best when they forgot the scripts. This is one of the better collections.

Description

The Legendary Crooners features classic performances by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Nat "King" Cole and Perry Como.

Bing Crosby is featured along with another influential performer, Louis Armstrong, on Now You Has Jazz. "Der Bingle" also takes a musical trip with Frank Sinatra as they perform Mexicali Rose, South of the Border, I Love Paris and more, and are joined by surprise guest Bob Hope for The Road to Morocco.

The warm, easy-going style of Perry Como is on display as he performs Hello Young Lovers and sings an engaging duet with Ann-Margret on It Might as Well Be Spring. Then it's the "King of Cool" himself, Dean Martin, singing some of his biggest hits including Oh, Marie and That's Amore and clowning with his former partner Jerry Lewis and guest Jack Benny.

The lighter side of Nat "King" Cole comes across through his performances of That's My Girl and Frim Fram Sauce. And for a finale, Frank Sinatra sings Witchcraft and gives us a musical history lesson along with Louis Armstrong in Birth of the Blues.

The performances in this entertaining DVD prove why Frank, Dean, Bing, Nat and Perry (last names are really not necessary) ruled the world of popular music for many decades, and are still loved today.

Description

In THE STOOGE, Bill Miller (Martin) has found modest success as a singer in the off-vaudeville circuit. Teaming up with a comic (Lewis) proves to be the best thing for Bill, as his routine becomes an instant success, but mainly because of the clown he takes on as his partner. Unable to admit it, Bill knows he owes his success to his sidekick, the stooge. Jerry Lewis calls this his favorite of the Martin & Lewis productions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Martin and Lewis chemistry!!.......2007-09-01

This Martin and Lewis comedy shows the talents of these two comedians clicking from start to finish. Martin's singing and Lewis's hijinks are first rate. Loved it!

4 out of 5 stars The Stooge.......2007-01-18

The Stooge is a classic Martin and Lewis comedy. It features a number of great singing performances by Dean Martin, as well as a few not so great ones from Jerry Lewis. The inventive physical comedy Lewis is known for is on display here in full force. Their chemistry is a near perfect blend of straight man and clown. The most intriguing aspect of this film is that the story line, in some ways, refects their true life relationship. Martin's character, Bill, is a singer who is starting a solo career after being a success in a singer/comedy duo. Bill struggles at first, so he hires Lewis(Ted) to be a stooge and provide comedy relief from the audience. Ted quickly becomes the star of the act but Martin refuses to acknowledge him as an official member of the team. Bill becomes jealous and angry as his wife and manager insist he introduce Ted as an equal partner. Bill, intent on a career as a solo act, refuses and kicks Ted out. He soon realizes, however, that he just doesn't have what it takes to be a solo. During a flopping performance he admits to the audience that Ted is what gave the act it's spark. Ted, who happens to be in the audience, comes to Bill's rescue in a heartwarming and funny finale. This is a must for any Martin and Lewis collection.

5 out of 5 stars MARTIN & LEWIS.......2007-01-13

FANS OF THE COMEDY DUO WILL LOVE THIS RARITY. IT HAS AN ALMOST SYMMETRICAL STORYLINE TO HOW THIER CAREERS TOGETHER WERE GOING, EXCEPT IN THE FICTIONAL VERSION - THEY RE-UNITED THEIR TEAM AND STAYED TOGETHER.

I WOULD SAY THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF THEIR BEST WORK.

5 out of 5 stars Who's yer li'l whozit? One of Dean & Jerry's best........2005-09-22

When Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis first played the nightclubs, they became the hottest act, bar none. When they graduated to films, they took the world by storm. They were arguably the last of the great comedy teams (following Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, etc.). But that partnership had its moments of tension & personality clashes that ultimately brought an end to their teamwork. "The Stooge" certainly mirrors that real-life partnership/friendship in its storyline.
Dean plays Bill Miller, a struggling vaudeville entertainer hungry for good material & genuine success. In desperation, he agrees to hire a "stooge"--a guy "planted" in the audience as comedy relief--in the form of goofy but well-meaning Ted Rogers (Lewis). Chemistry is established & soon after, Miller's act rockets to popularity, but soon enters the conflict: Miller's stubborn ego & his unwillingness to give Rogers equal billing & credit for the success. Which leads to the climactic stage scene, where Miller apologizes to his audience & admits that without Rogers, it's only half an act.
As usual, Lewis gives some classic comedy moments--the early diner scene which he enrages the propietor by eating his own lunch (handily producing a hard-boiled egg, a salt-shaker & a tea bag from his pockets), therefore not paying a dime & just taking up space; the several stage act scenes which are such stellar examples of why Martin & Lewis were such a great comedy team; Lewis' courtship with "Freckles", an admirer; and the train scene, with Lewis' hilarious battle over a portable sink & trying to sleep in an upper bunk.
But the big surprises are the moments of pathos & drama. The scene where a drunken Miller tells Rogers to go away & that he can do the act solo is well-played by the two of them, and Miller's apology to the audience hints at Martin's ability to handle heart-rending moments (note how he fidgets thru this scene). Miller's egomaniacal ways which put him at odds with his wife & manager (and eventually Rogers) throughout the film are done well, and could have easily been over-played & corny, thanks to Norman Taurog's direction.
So if you're already a fan of the boys or new to them, this is a good film to start at.
And by the way: When are they going to release on DVD all the OTHER Martin & Lewis comedies, such as "the Caddy", "Artists & Models", "Sailor Beware", etc.? They are LONG overdue!! And PLEASE..STOP re-releasing "AT War With the Army" over & over again! ENOUGH!

5 out of 5 stars Jerry Lewis Breaks into Showbiz.......2005-06-09

I generally enjoy most of the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movies. I find them to be consistently funny. Jerry Lewis is a master of physical comedy and his silliness, when used effectively, created excellent comedy. This movie may be a bit less than the best created by the Martin-Lewis team, but it is still very funny and nearly ranks with their best.

Dean Martin plays struggling comedian Bill Miller. Miller hires Ted Rogers (Lewis) to be a heckler in the audience, hoping to get laughs in the process. The result is beyond Bill's expectations. Ted is a natural comedian and gets laughs wherever he goes. However, self-centered Miller believes he is the star of the show and does not need Ted. Ted shows incredible loyalty to Miller regardless of how poorly Miller treats him.

As Bill's fame rises, and he continues to treat Ted as a nobody, Bill's wife Mary Turner (lovely Polly Bergen) becomes increasingly upset with Bill, wanting Bill to share the glory. Similarly, Ted's girl friend Genevieve "Frecklehead" Tait (Marion Marshall) becomes angry with Ted for allowing Bill to take advantage of him.

Eventually everything works out for the best, but not before we are treated to a series of jokes and slapstick comedy that will have you laughing from the beginning of this movie to the end.

    Product Description

    My Friend Irma
One croons. The other cavorts. Fans couldn't get enough of them! Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made their crowd-pleasing film debuts in My Friend Irma, a 1949 funfest based on the long-running radio show. The guys are juice-bar operators who get a shot at new careers when a self-proclaimed manager discovers that Martin is better at squeezing out a musical "C" than Vitamin C. Their story intersects with the antics of Irma (Marie Wilson), the likable airhead who meddles in the romantic life of her roommate (Diana Lynn). Irma may be a queen of loopiness, but it's Lewis who walks off as America's clown prince. Exclaimed the Los Angeles Examiner: "There just hasn't been anything like him on land, sea or celluloid."

    My Friend Irma Goes West
Hilarious sequel to My Friend Irma!

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad, and the Funny..........2006-01-28

The Good: They actually finally put out another couple of (and I use the term loosely) Martin and Lewis movies. It's interesting to watch the transition between the 2 films. In My Friend Irma, they are definitely in support. They are add on characters in an adaptation of a sit-com radio show. They don't show up until 10 minutes into the movie, and while Dean is a natural as the romantic interest (He takes to film like a duck to water. The Camera loves him), they're not quite sure what to do with Jerry. For the new Comedy Team sensation, they don't spend a lot of time together. They have a couple of funny moments (When they interact at the Juice Bar, The Donkey Serenade in the Club)but basically it's not their show. Fast forward to My Friend Irma Goes West less than a year later and it's a different story. Dean and Jerry show up within the first 5 minutes and essentially drive the movie from there on. Jerry is much more prominent and this time it's the Irma people who are the support act.

The Bad: For some reason known only to the people at Paramount, they decided to cram both these movies on one side of a disc. There are jumps and freezes, particularly in "Goes West". There appears to have been no effort at restoring or remastering the films, the balance is off so scenes are unnecessarily dark. No Extras, No Commentary, No Trailers...Nada...Zip... Zilch. Then they insist on having Corinne Calvet sing, but that's another issue...

The Funny: The Vagabond Song in My Friend Irma Goes West. It's a bit directly from the Legendary Martin and Lewis Night Club act and it gives you a great example of why they were so popular. It illustrates that with Martin and Lewis you have two comedians, but their styles are so radically different that it becomes less a comedy team and more a physical manifestation of a Manic/Depressive disorder. It's hysterical.

I just hope the studio takes a little more care with future Martin and Lewis releases. They're worth it.

5 out of 5 stars What a bargain, buy it for the radio show terrifically adapted to movies.......2006-01-05

My Friend Irma was an extremely popular radio show featuring the prototypical, 39-34-36, dumb blonde, brilliantly played by Marie Wilson.

The show was backed up with a strong supporting cast being the lazy shyster boyfriend, her sensible roommate, an elderly landlady who has the hots for a non-interested musician tenant.

Martin and Lewis are basically "throw ins", or comic additions created to allow a 30 minute radio show to last a movie length.

Much like a number of TV shows that were unable to adapt as movies, similar radio shows did as well.

My Friend Irma did not, including the Goes West sequel. These are quality movies.

Given that many one vintage movie dvd costs the same as two movies on one dvd, this is a true bargain in cost and content.

Just don't buy it for Martin and Lewis alone.

By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.

Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews

4 out of 5 stars an early glimpse at Martin-Lewis.......2005-11-07

I had never seen these two films probably because Dean and Jerry are mainly supporting characters - kinda like how Abbott and Costello were in "Night in the Tropics." But even with neither of them being Irma or her friend, these two films are entertaining. Jerry and Dean get to give a glimpse of their nightclub act that made them the hottest duo working.

"Goes West" is revolutionary since it deals with television and Las Vegas. My favorite part of the film is that these folks are broke, yet in 1950, they can afford a television. And television isn't treated as an enemy of cinema in the film - although we learn that movies pay much better. Also we get a glimpse of early Vegas. The boys hang out at the Flamingo's pool. What's strange is night shots where you don't see that many lights on the Strip.

It's a shame that Paramount put this out as a single DVD - thus getting very little notice. Jerry Lewis told a crowd in Philly that Paramount was coming out with a Martin-Lewis boxset in January. He didn't give anymore details. They better get the other 13 titles out soon!

3 out of 5 stars First Two Films to Feature Martin & Lewis.......2005-11-02

MY FRIEND IRMA was a radio series in the 1940's and legendary Hollywood producer Hal Wallis thought the film version would be a great vehicle for up-and-coming talents Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. The film was so successful that in 1950 Irma went West, with Dean and Jerry along for the ride. This launched the comedy duo into stardom and before the year was out they were headlining their own film ("At War with the Army").

Although these films are not Dean or Jerry's best work(s) I am excited about this double feature because I hope more of their great films (as a team and as individuals) will be released, we still need: "Sailor Beware", "That's My Boy", "Visit to a Small Planet", "The Geisha Boy", "Some Came Running", "Rock-a-Bye Baby", and "Who's Minding the Store", "Which Way to the Front", "Hardly Working", "Cracking Up", and "Three on a Couch" on DVD.

    Description

THE COLGATE COMEDY HOUR, which ran from 1950 through 1955, was a wildly popular weekly variety show filled with funny monologues and comic sketches. And it was broadcast live. The rotating roster of hosts included such entertainment giants as Fred Allen, Eddie Cantor, Abbott & Costello, and Jimmy Durante, but best remembered are the shows hosted by the white-hot comedy team of DEAN MARTIN and JERRY LEWIS. Here on 10 DVDs is all the funny stuff from all 28 shows hosted by Martin & Lewis at their spontaneous best, unencumbered by plot-heavy scripts, rigid film schedules, or elaborate production numbers. Celebrity guests include BURT LANCASTER, TONY CURTIS, VERA MILES and JACK BENNY. Plus - Hollywood Rivals: Martin & Lewis and Jerry Lewis at the Movies. No fan of comedy or classic TV should be without this historical - and hysterical - collection!

JERRY LEWIS AT THE MOVIES - Classic scenes from Jerry's greatest films - with and without Dino - make up this entertaining hour.

1 out of 5 stars the best of the colgate comedy hour Martin and Lewis.......2007-07-30

I completely agree with the other reviewer. DON'T BUY THIS!!!!. They have completely butchered these shows. They've resold this material, more than once, and in many different forms. Just the songs, just the comedy etc. It's about time they release these shows in a way that the fans are not getting cheated. When will they ever do it right and put out ALL the shows UNCUT?
This is beyond greed. This is a complete ripoff.

1 out of 5 stars Butchered and no Songs.......2007-07-29

Sorry folks, but they did it again. They placed the title of the DVD collection at the not-low-enough right of the frame, where it stays constantly visible throughout the programs; AND they cut out every single one of the Dean Martin songs as well as other parts of the show, INCLUDING some of the Martin & Lewis scenes!! For instance, on CD4, Show #1, the "Chapters" listing has a routine called "Jerry's Everywhere!", but this skit is nowhere to be found anywhere in the collection, and so you miss one of the funniest bits they ever did.

    Don't buy this set.

Hey producers, you out there? Anybody listening? Give us the uncut versions with the option to skip the main titles and the commercials. No, I don't want to watch every show all the way through, but let ME CHOOSE what I want to watch or not watch.
