Arguably the greatest black comedy ever made, Stanley Kubrick's cold-war classic is the ultimate satire of the nuclear age. I didn't Laugh Once........2007-09-09

I asked for a bunch of comedies from the 60s & somehow this war satire landed in the pile. At least it was't one of those lame 50's propoganda films & had a somewhat interesting twist; this time an introverted American biggot nutcase is the bad guy, with his own president against him at every step, & Russua is the innocent victim. I couldn't get through more than 1/2 of it.

Peter Sellers at his best!!.......2007-09-01

I have been used to Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies but this 1964 movie is WONDERFUL! One movie..three different roles. Dr. Strangelove has stood the test of time since its release. If memory serves me correct this movie was originally to be released in late 1963 but was delayed due to the assassination of President Kennedy. George C.Scott did a superb job in his role. The scene in which the President (Peter Sellers) calling his Russian counterpart was hilarious. Worth watching again!!

funny story but bad timing.......2007-08-28

The first time that I saw this film, I thought it was the funniest.
but now, in this current time frame, it was sad, knowing that a war was
going on and our men were being killed for no good reason.

For years I have heard about this movie, and I finally bought it at a time when I had the opportunity to watch it. Wonderful!! Sellers is a comic genius, and the subtly of the laughs is the great thing in Dr. Strangelove.

Better Each Time I See It.......2007-08-22

I have to admit that when I first saw this, it didn't actually make me stop worrying and love the bomb. However, almost everything about it is just perfect- from the gun battle in front of the Air Force's "Peace is our profession" sign to the Russian ambassador taking secret photos in the warroom after the end of the world to Dr. Strangelove's miraculous cure (when my 15 year old daughter recovered from her stroke, I had her rise from her wheelchair and say, "Mein Fuhrer, I can valk!"). Highly recommended as one of the greatest, if grimmest, comedies ever.

It is 1962 and the James Bond saga is already about 10 years old...by Ian Flemings' standards at least.It was 1952 when the first Bond book was written by this former WW2 intelligence officer and published.That was "Casino Royale".Four more followed.The first four were mildly successful then "From Russia With Love" seemed to break Flemings' writing career wide open.
Two film entrepreneurs by the name of Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli(his family was famous for their namesake vegetable!)cast a then virtual unknown Scottish body builder by the name of Sean Connery in the role of James Bond in their first film of what was to become a highly successful franchise built on Flemings' works.Some of the films followed his works more closely than others.Flemings'Bond,from what I recall in reading them years ago, was a much darker or somber figure than the one created for the screen.George Lazenbys' portrayal in"On her Majesty's Secret Service" was more true to Fleming form,but was a box office flop due to Connery's portrayal of the character and subsequent popularity thereof.
Dr.No was a great beginning to the franchise.And this newly released version(and all the other Connery Bonds I will review) are remastered and look more vivid than I have ever seen them.MGM in the opening disc commercial calls their work on this a revolutionary new process.Well don't be fooled.This kind of frame by frame restoration has been around and in use by other concerns for some time now.It's just that MGM has finally gotten around to using it more and touting it.MGM(and ALL companies) should think seriously of releasing all their products this way....it is way overdue.MGM's fortunes have fallen dramatically over the years.Once the kings of Hollywood they now rarely hit much box office gold.Fox,Universal and Paramount are beating them big time and have for years now.I would like to think Sony Picture's take over of MGM has maybe given them a kick in the derriere...they need it.Let's face it MGM may not lead the pack like they used to but they have got one heck of a treasure trove of product sitting in their vaults at the moment.And what better way to start to gain back some of that all important revenue than to re-release their stored product in the most pristine form they can? It surely cannot hurt.But I digress.
Dr.No was released to great fanfare in 1962 and was a big hit for Broccoli and company and United Artists.The movie opened with a new and original difference.The hero walks into frame silhouetted in a side shot while the music plays cool and steadily in the background.We seem to be looking through one eye of a mask when suddenly he turns and shoots in our direction.The screen slowly turns red,the mask eye shakes and then all momentarily goes dark.We realize we were looking through the eyes of some unknown criminal who Bond has "erased".It was new,different and totally fresh and the public showed their appreciation at the box office.All subsequent Bonds(up to the current one)would repeat this opening.
The cool music accompanying this film would be performed by legendary composer/conductor John Barry.A great theme that has never lost its' appeal and when you hear the famous guitar strains you know exactly what you're listening to.Another great touch(of many)that make(especially) these early Bond films so memorable.
This movies' plot moves along at a great pace and the tension never lets up.It concerns the interference of the launching of rockets from Cape Canaveral in Florida from source unknown.A British Intelligence operative in Jamaica,by the name of Strangway and his assistant,are murdered.Bond proceeds there and gets some help from a CIA agent played by Jack Lord(of later"Hawaii Five-O" fame).It seems Strangway had gone to a local island called Crab Key and had returned with some radioactive rock samples.Crab Key also seems to be the home of a "dragon".Our Bond gets over to Crab Key toute suite and lands right into the clutches of villain Dr.No in his hideout there.Dr.No is played to perfection by Joseph Wiseman.
Will Bond be able to save the world from the evil plans of Dr.No?That's for you,dear readers,to find out.
There are a few "firsts" in this film.Besides the obvious introduction to Bond himself,we find "M",Bonds' boss in this and subsequent Connery Bonds,played wonderfully by Bernard Lee."Money Penny" a small but wonderful and endearing part played by Lois Maxwell.I still wonder to this day,as we all did way back then,why they didn't pursue a romantic relationship on screen with those two characters.It was such a natural.We are also introduced to Bonds' favourite drink....a medium dry vodka martini,shaken not stirred with a twist of lemon.And of course no Bond movie would be complete without a love interest,or two,or three,or four,or more!This movies' main one was with "Sylvia Trench",played by Eunice Gayson.She was one gorgeous start in a long line of Bond sirens he subsequently seduced.This was a famous Bond trait in these films that made his character stand out.Whatever Bond did with women was just that,no explanations,no apologies.That was his world and you accepted it.
Dr.No deserves every one of its' four and a half stars and probably a little more.The cast is impeccable,the plot wonderfully tight and the music is the best.And of course Sean Connery's performance in this and subsequent Bond pictures produced,to me at least,the best,most enduring,convincing and my favourite portrayal of the British Intelligence agent 007 James Bond in the entire series.I invite you to get this movie now remastered beautifully,and see for yourself.

The first in a spectacular series!.......2007-08-10

I remember watching the 007 movies back when I was really young. Now, going back, renting all the 007 movies and re-watching them, I have now redeemed my 007 fandom!

Dr. No is the first ever 007 movie. It starred Sean Connery, and back in the 60's, it was ahead of its time. Now, 35 years later, it still looks great!

STORY: James Bond 007, an MI-6 Agent, has been sent on an exciting mission to the Indies to investigate the death of one of his co-workers. Whilst there, he finds himself on the trail of a cold-blooded killer. This trail leads to a scientist who's also a madman. His name is Dr. No, and there are very further but CRAZY implications.... that his Dr. No might just be this killer!

THOUGHTS: Whoa! What a movie for it's time! Great action, very sexy ladies, and great dialogue too. I remember the scene where they hide underwater from the henchmen. I don't think I could hold my breath underwater for THAT long!

So rent this today if you wanna be on the 007 path!

A Quality Film on a Difficult Subject.......2007-08-18

I do not think that Mr. Olson comes down firmly on one side or the other in this film, even though he identifies himself as an Evolutionist. This is not the point of this film. He most definitely is not bashing anyone. Instead, it shows the difficulty that comes about when two sides have such a hard time even discussing such a topic. If anything, he takes the Pro-Evolutionists to task for not being able to clearly articulate their points of view to common folk.

I'm sure many of us have had good or bad experiences in discussing certain topics with family and friends. If we have a wide-enough group of contacts there must inevitably be the individual or group that you simply cannot continue the discussion with because you cannot understand how they could possibly think the way they do. This film shows why it is so difficult for Evolutionists to engage in a debate when they mostly feel there is no reason for a debate. And it is told with a great deal of sensitivity, respect and humor toward both sides -- especially endearing when he presents his own mother's points of view (the last scene of which left me chuckling for hours).

I am sorry, but I cannot compare Randy Olson to Michael Moore because I do not see where Mr. Moore shows any respect toward anyone who disagrees with him. Where Mr. Olson presents an engaging experience, Mr. Moore simply comes across as a smartass.

Upon watching this film, you may be surprised at how serious the divide on Intelligent Design and Evolutionism really is. Other than sound bites on TV, you may not even be aware that there is a group with $5 Million in funding geared toward promoting their point of view. Truly a fine bit of film-making!

educational and interesting..........2007-06-25

Wow! I liked *Flock of Dodos*. You have to have an open mind to view this documentary on evolution and intelligent design. It is both educational and interesting. This film touches aspects of the debate that you may not have seen in the media.

What is the difference between evolution and intelligent design? What is the difference between intelligent design and creationism? If you don't know or not sure, then this is the one you need to watch.

It's interesting to see how much and how long these people have been fighting for what is to be taught in the schools, especially the Kansas Board of Education. It is amazing to see what people believe about the origin of life.

One camp believes in "teaching the science". The other camp believes in "teaching the controversy". So, one believes that presenting natural evidences (fossils, etc.) is the way to go in schools. The other believes that one should lay out pros and cons of each theories/approaches. The bigger question that this film presents is what exactly is intelligent design? And how is this really different from evolution or even from creationism?

This film touches on the state boards of education in a few cities, the Discovery Institute, scientists/evolutionists and their views, Christians, and other whatnots. For a film that is 1 and a half hour long, it is packed with information. You just have to watch it.

Now, Olson did a good job on the subject of intelligent design. There's just some parts of it that could have been edited out. I think that Olson tries to be like Michael Moore. The difference is that Moore has more balls to confront people. Olson tries to confront people but he ends up liking his interviewees even if he disagrees with him. Nothing wrong with that.

Irreverent Provocative Fun.......2007-05-12

This is a very insightful condemnation of Intelligent Design and the approach of evolutionists, with minimal humor, but a lot of fun. Olson takes a relaxed approach to this huge controversy, and teaches us a great deal in the process.

He tells the story with some of the style of Michael Moore, using dry wit, multiple interviews, and an overt agenda. He was an evolutionary marine biologist, a student of the great Stephen Jay Gould, who decided to go into film, and here looks at all angles of the intelligent design controversy and how it tries to attack evolution. The movie is short on content and long on entertainment, and that's for a purpose. The goal of the movie is to show how behind biologists are in public relations, and how much more they need to do.

The movie did this admirably. The evolutionists come across as either Ivory Tower scientists who can't relate to the public, or real prigs who you wouldn't want to drink with. The Intelligent Design folks are all pretty likable, but simultaneously really off when it comes to science, for the most part not knowing anything behind what they are saying. Olson wishes to point out this huge gulf between the facts and likability, and call scientists to a place where they can start to actually reach out to the public on a level that doesn't require four years of grad school to understand. The scientists are therefore the dodos in the film.

This movie's raised a lot of controversy because the Discovery Institute, based in Seattle and the leader of the ID movement, complained that they weren't consulted and that the movie is very biased against them, for instance making it look like their budget is 5 million instead of 4 million. Likewise the scientific community complained that the movie makes them look bad and that Olson is calling for them to dumb down their material. Yet Olson tried to use material indicative of the personalities, even excluding the comment that Behe made that he didn't care what was taught in public schools because his children don't attend them. This comment wasn't reflective of all of the rest of Behe's interview, and so therefore was excluded from the film. (It can be viewed, however, as an extra on this DVD.)

There are moments to smile at here, rather than laugh out loud. Some of the focus on the director's mom, Moose, was perhaps a bit irrelevant. But the film overall is a brilliant work, simultaneously condemning both sides, and calling for radical change in the way that science is presented- but in a light-hearted manner that few can effectively achieve on film.

Sean Connery was just 32 years old when he won the role of Agent 007. In his first adventure James Bond is called to Jamaica where a colleague and secretary have been mysteriously killed. With an American CIA agent (Jack Lord, pre-Hawaii Five-O), they discover that the nefarious Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) is scheming to blackmail the U.S. government with a device capable of deflecting and destroying U.S. rockets launched from Cape Canaveral. Of course, Bond takes time off from his exploits to enjoy the company of a few gorgeous women, including the bikini-clad Ursula Andress. She gloriously kicks off the long-standing tradition of Bond women who know how to please their favorite secret agent. A sexist anachronism? Maybe, but this is Bond at his purest, kicking off a series of movies that shows no sign of slowing down. --Jeff Shannon

You Only Live Twice: The film boasts the best of the Bond title songs (this one sung on a dreamy track by Nancy Sinatra), but the movie itself is one of the weaker ones of the Sean Connery phase of the 007 franchise. The story concerns an effort by the evil organization SPECTRE to start a world war, but the not-so-super villain behind the plot is the awfully civilized Donald Pleasence. The thin script is by Roald Dahl (shouldn't we have expected a better Bond nemesis from the creator of mad genius Willy Wonka?), and direction is by British veteran Lewis Gilbert (Alfie). But the movie can't hold a candle to Dr. No, From Russia with Love, or Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh

Octopussy: Roger Moore was nearing the end of his reign as James Bond when he made Octopussy, and he looks a little worn out. But the movie itself infuses some new blood into the old franchise, with a frisky pace and a pair of sturdy villains. Maud Adams--who'd also been in the Bond outing The Man with the Golden Gun--plays the improbably named Octopussy, while old smoothie Louis Jourdan is her crafty partner in crime. There's an island populated only by women, plus a fantastic sequence with a hand-to-hand fight that happens on a plane--and on top of a plane. The film even has an extra emotional punch, since this time out 007 is not only following the orders of Her Majesty's Secret Service, but he is also exacting a personal revenge: a fellow double-0 agent has been killed. Two Bond films were actually released in 1983 within a few months of each other, as Octopussy was followed by Sean Connery's comeback in Never Say Never Again. The success of both pictures proved that there was still plenty of mileage left in the old license to kill, though Moore had one more workout--A View to a Kill--before hanging it up. And that title? The franchise had already used up the titles to Ian Fleming's novels, so Octopussy was taken from a lesser-known Fleming short story. -- Robert Horton

Tomorrow Never Dies: Pierce Brosnan returns for his second stint as James Bond (after GoldenEye), and he's doing it in high style with an invigorating cast of costars. It's only appropriate that a Bond film from 1997 would find Agent 007 pitted against a media mogul (Jonathan Pryce) who's going to start a global war (beginning with stolen nuclear missiles aimed at China) to create attention-grabbing headlines for his latest multimedia news channel. It's the information age run amok, and Bond must team up with a lovely and lethal agent from the Chinese External Security Force (played by Honk Kong action star Michelle Yeoh) to foil the madman's plot of global domination. Luckily for Bond, the villain's wife (Teri Hatcher) is one of his former lovers, and at the behest of his superior M (Judi Dench), 007 finds ample opportunity to exploit the connection. Armed with the usual array of gadgets (including a remote-controlled BMW), Brosnan settles into his role with acceptable flair, and the dynamic Yeoh provides a perfect balance to the sexism that once threatened to turn Bond into a politically incorrect anachronism. He's still Bond, to be sure, but he's saving the world with a bit more sophisticated finesse. --Jeff Shannon

Moonraker: This was the first James Bond adventure produced after the success of Star Wars, so it jumped on the sci-fi bandwagon by combining the suave appeal of Agent 007 (once again played by Roger Moore) with enough high-tech hardware and special effects to make Luke Skywalker want to join Her Majesty's Secret Service. After the razzle-dazzle of The Spy Who Loved Me, this attempt to latch onto a trend proved to be a case of overkill, even though it brought back the steel-toothed villain Jaws (Richard Kiel) and scored a major hit at the box office. This time Bond is up against a criminal industrialist named Drax (Michel Lonsdale) who wants to control the world from his orbiting space station. In keeping with his well-groomed style, Bond thwarts this maniacal Neo-Hitler's scheme with the help of a beautiful, sleek-figured scientist (played by Lois Chiles with all the vitality of a department-store mannequin). Despite Moore's passive performance (which Pauline Kael described as "like an office manager who is turning into dead wood but hanging on to collect his pension"), Moonraker had no problem attracting an appreciative audience, and there are even a few renegade Bond-philes who consider it one of their favorites. --Sean Axmaker

Offbeat Collection of Bond Titles, Superbly Remastered..........2007-06-09

The brilliantly remastered library of James Bond films continues with "James Bond Ultimate Edition - Vol. 4", a collection of titles that may have you scratching your head about the choices, but will dazzle with their pristine beauty, nonetheless!

"Dr. No" (1962), was, of course, the first 007 film, and a huge gamble for both Broccoli/Saltzman's Eon Productions, and United Artists. With a tiny budget, a little-known leading man (Sean Connery), and a daring concept for a more conservative era (missions of a ruthless hero whose job was murder, and hobby, copious amounts of sex), the film succeeded because of tongue-in-cheek humor, explosive action, breathtaking women (personified by Ursula Andress), and Connery's charismatic presence. Until Daniel Craig's debut, this was as close to author Ian Fleming's vision of Bond as you could find, and what the film lacks in polish, it makes up for in intensity. (4 stars out of 5)

"You Only Live Twice" (1967), has, over time, earned the ire of many Bond fans as the film Broccoli decided to do as Connery's first swan song, instead of the vastly superior "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (Japan offered a very lucrative production deal). As worldwide Bond mania subsided, this strange entry has a bored Connery machine-gunned, resurrected, piloting a toy helicopter, pretending to be Japanese, and often playing second-fiddle to Ninjas, while facing his LEAST threatening villain, Donald Pleasence. Even a beautiful theme song and breathtaking volcano finale can't save this entry. (2 stars out of 5)

"Octopussy" (1983), is best-known as Roger Moore's entry in the year of competing Bond films (as Sean Connery's "Never Say Never Again" was also released). While both actors were 'long-in-the-tooth' as 007 (Moore was 55, Connery, 53), the Moore film offered Eon's customary opulence, a leading lady who could act (Maud Adams), and the unintentional humor of villain Louis Jourdan lisping "Octopussy". Great action scenes and beautiful locations (much of the story is set in India) were marred by the campiness that was, sadly, a trademark of the Moore films. (2 1/2 stars out of 5).

"Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), Pierce Brosnan's second outing as 007, finds him far more at ease and mature in the role than in "GoldenEye", and offers one of the best Bond leading ladies, Michelle Yeoh, as his Chinese counterpart. Jonathan Pryce, as a nerdy 'Ted Turner'-type media mogul, provides a wry spin on the traditional Bond villain. On the down side, Teri Hatcher's performance as a Bond ex-lover is amateurish, and the derivativeness that would plague all of Brosnan's films gives it a "been there, done that" feel. (3 1/2 stars out of 5)

"Moonraker" (1979), one of the dumbest ideas for a 007 film, ever ("James Bond in Space!"), is, basically, a reworking of the vastly superior "The Spy Who Loved Me", moving the venue from the sea to Earth orbit. Silliness abounds, from Jaws and his blond nymphet girlfriend, to a gondola on wheels cruising the streets of Venice, to the ray-gun space battle climax. Michael Lonsdale looks more bored than villainous, and even a fabulous free-fall opening sequence can't save this Roger Moore entry. (1 1/2 stars out of 5)

While only "Dr. No" qualifies as a Bond 'classic', these remastered films are all still worth a new viewing, if you haven't seen them, lately; the loving restoration work makes each look as fresh as the day they were released!

Best Purchase Ever.......2007-05-12

I own all 4 volumes, and this is the ultimate collection for Bond Fans and a must have collection. This collection is chock full of extra goodies. The only movie missing is "Never Say Never Again" with Sean Connery and Kim Basinger as this was not part of the " official" Bond series and was put out by a different studio, the same year as " Octopussy". Each Volume contains 5 movies in their own individual case.(2 DVDs each 1 with the movie and one with extras). Each movie also has a little booklet with information on the actors and the filming of the movie, with makes for some interesting reading. These are high quality DVDs in both video and sound and for the advertised price for all four volumes, is a steal in my opinion. I have always been satisfied with Criterion releases for their quality and the extras and this series has definately not disappointed me. This was money well spent. Charlie S.

James Bond Ultimate Collection.

INTRODUCTION:
When it comes to film franchises, very few measure up to Ian Fleming's legendary secret agent, James Bond. For decades this series has never failed to entertain. With girls, guns, gadgets, and everything in between, the series rarely fails to please. The franchise has been through many highs and lows in its several-decade history, and numerous collections of the films have been released over the years. In 2006, MGM released four Ultimate Collections.

OVERVIEW:
The James Bond Ultimate Collection consists of four box sets, each including ten discs - five films and a bonus disc for each. The boxes' content are as follows:
-Volume One (Gold): Goldfinger (1963), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), The Man With The Golden Gun (1974), The World Is Not Enough (1999)
-Volume Two (Blue): Thunderball (1965), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), A View To A Kill (1985), Licence To Kill (1989), Die Another Day (2002)
-Volume Three (Red): From Russia With Love (1963), On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), Live and Let Die (1973), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Goldeneye (1995)

Note that these are sets of the official EON productions films. As such, non-EON productions such as the David Niven/Peter Sellers version of Casino Royale and Thunderball remake Never Say Never Again are not included.

REVIEW:
I'm not going to go through and review each individual film (that's what the movies' individual Amazon pages are for), I'm just gonna focus on the box sets and their execution here. Here is a list of the pros and cons for every set.

-THE GOOD-
-ALL TWENTY FILMS READILY AVAILABLE ON DVD AGAIN. It's been a long time since we've been able to get the movies on DVD, and it's about time they got reissued. Finally, this shortage has reached its end.
-A QUICK AND EASY WAY TO COMPLETE YOUR BOND COLLECTION. You could hunt down each individual film, and spend a lot more money and do a lot more searching. Or you could just get these four sets. Much quicker and easier.
-A BONUS DISC OF MATERIAL FOR EVERY MOVIE! If you're a Bond fanatic, you're going to get a kick out of all the extra material MGM gives you in these sets. Deleted scenes, trailers, interviews with cast and crew, these bonus discs are pure gold for you if you're a Bond die hard like me.
-REMASTERED. VERY WELL. Normally I don't mention remastering of movies in my reviews, as it's usually a rather shoddy job that does little to improve the picture quality. NOT THIS TIME. MGM has given us the films with FRAME BY FRAME RESTORATION. If you thought earlier issues of Bond films on DVD had crappy picture quality, MGM redeems themselves here. This is, hands down, THE GREATEST FILM REMASTERING JOB I HAVE EVER SEEN. Even Dr. No, the first Bond film, has stunningly beautiful picture quality! My hat goes off to MGM here. This is reason alone to buy the sets, even if you own the older boxes.
-SUPERIOR TO THE OLD DVD BOXES OF THE SERIES. Everything they did, these sets do better. Picture, extras, you name it, this set does it better.

-THE BAD-
-STILL NOT IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. This has been under hot debate from Bond fans as long as boxes of the films have been on the market. MGM clearly wants to make a few bucks. Let's face it, if all of the Connery films were in one set, everyone would buy that set and no others. Rather than getting the films in chronological order, we get uneven and scattershot mixes. For instance, the fourth box set features Dr. No and You Only Live Twice, two of the masterpieces of the series. But the set is dragged down by two of the major stinkers in the series, Moonraker and Octopussy. With every set it's this same "balancing act" phenomenon, with great films and weak ones alike. I must admit, a rather ingenious marketing strategy on MGM's part, but not what fans want (of course, you can do like I did and buy all the sets and make your own box and put them in order.) Fortunately, this is the ONLY major flaw of these sets.

OVERALL:
When it comes to the Bond films on DVD, "Nobody Does It Better" than MGM with these box sets. Beautiful picture and sound, extras galore, and all twenty films readily available again, there's no reason not to own these if you're a Bond fan. Even if you already have a few films on DVD or some of the older sets, these are still worth getting for the picture quality and bonus features alone.

Conan the Barbarian, the movie that turned Arnold Schwarzenegger into a global superstar, is a prime example of a match made in heaven. It's the movie that macho maverick writer-director John Milius was born to make, and Arnold was genetically engineered for his role as the muscle-bound, angst-ridden hero created in Robert E. Howard's pulp novels. Oliver Stone contributed to Milius's screenplay, and the production design by comic artist Ron Cobb represents a perfect cinematic realization of Howard's fantasy world. To avenge the murder of his parents, Conan tracks down the evil Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) with the help of Queen Valeria (played by buff B-movie vixen Sandahl Bergman) and Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez). The real edition..........2007-09-09

If you're a fan of Conan the Barbarian, as I am, you probably find it as disheartening as I do that the only version of this classic that is normally available on DVD is the May, 2000 release, the so called "collector's edition". The collector's edition has a host of bells and whistles including a documentary about the making of the film, deleted scenes, and commentary by Arnold Schwarzenegger and John Milius. What it lacks, though, is the film I remember. The collector's edition was re-edited with additional footage which drastically changed the feel of several of the best scenes in the film, and none of them for the better.

Unfortunate as this is, if your willing to search a little, you can still find a copy of the original February 1998 widescreen DVD release. This version's only special features are the original theatrical trailer, a few cast bio's and about a page worth of production notes. There is no commentary, no documentary, heck, the menus don't have animations or even sound, but it has the movie I love. It has the original, unaltered, unadulterated theatrical release just as we all remember it. Sure, the transfer isn't quite as clean as the 2000 release, but they actually transferred the film as it was seen in theaters in the 1998 release, without adding a bunch of scenes which were originally left on the cutting room floor for good reason.

I truly wish that movie companies would come to the realization that it is the movie and not all the crappy extras that is important on a DVD. Extras are nice, sure, but I would much rather have a unedited version of any film with no extras than a re-edited hodgepodge with a thousand extras. If Universal truly wants to put out a collectors edition of Conan the Barbarian, they should release a restored version of the original theatrical release, and not a bad re-edit with bonus tracks! George Lucas finally figured it out and released his 2-DVD limited editions of the original Star Wars films. Hopefully, Universal will take a que from this and give us the Conan we deserve.

The man of few words.......2007-06-05

I'm still not totally sure of what I was expecting from Conan, but I was quite disappointed in the end. I'm shocked that Arnie went on to become governor of California, cos with the standard of the film, I really wouldn't have expected Arnie to go onto bigger & better things.

My main problem with Conan, was it wasn't Arnie's best film, plus, it's just really a film to showcase his body isn't it? And he barely says more than a few lines during the entire film. I've been brought up on Arnie movies, and although this was a good film, I just prefer some of Arnie's later films. I just wish he would stop messing with being governor and get back to what he's good at! You can see throughout the film that Arnie has immense trouble holding a sword, and doing sword things with it, due the size of his arm & chest muscles.

The rest of the cast was quite good, although I did think the actress who played his mum at the beginning, was a rough-looking Bridgette Bardot! Hehe. I did think Sandahl Bergman, who played Valeria, was really pretty, and the relationship between her and Conan was outstanding, although he only speaks five words to her throughout the film! Their relationship does turn out to be quite bittersweet though, which is very sad, but I won't reveal too much about it, for those who haven't seen the film yet.

There's not much of a storyline to the entire movie, apart from getting revenge, and the beginning is a bit strange in my opinion. Pushing that wheel thing round and round, what happened to the rest of the children?

James Earl Jones is absolutely hilarious, but I don't think he was meant to be. He's very androgynous, and the wig is stupidly set too high, giving the impression he has a huge forehead.

Conan has a certain unique-ness to it, and it stands out from many other similar films out there. It's quite memorable as well, whereas I think if Arnie hadn't become a big star, then it might have been less so. Yes, I'll admit I don't particularly Conan, but I sat through it, and can still remember a lot of it. And it still survives against the special effects laden movies of today, with people with too much money, try to make up for the lack of storyline with too many special effects (hello Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, I'm talking to you!). Conan manages with minimalist special effects and it works so much better.

I would recommend Conan to any Arnie fans out there, it's an excellent film, it just didn't do it for me. Now, where's Twins?! :)

Easily one of the funniest movies I've ever seen........2007-05-30

No, I don't think it was meant to be a comedy but it serves up lots of laughs (for example, the wizard who lives in a treehouse). Its sort of unintentionally Monty Python-esque I guess you could say. It has a lot of campy value but there are also some great visuals as well. I laughed so hard I cried.

Best fantasy movie ever.......2007-02-08

This film is the best sword and sorcery/fantasy film you will ever find. Unlike many others released at this time, this one was different. The film itself is wonderful to look at, the scenery is breathtaking and amazing and the fight sequences are well paced and exciting. The emotion of the scenes, be they angry or intimate, come across with all the power you would expect.

Arnold Schwartznegger does a nice job here. He has the great screen presence needed to bring Conan to life. Even the supporting cast (James Earl Jones, Max Von Sydow, Sandahl Bergman and Gerry Lopez) turn in memorable and powerful performances.

I remember seeing this film when i was 16 and the images always stuck with me. What stuck with me even more was the music. I had already been a fan of the music for Star Wars, but this was a thousand times better than that. I love the way the first four cues of this film are all merged together. For over 17 minutes the story is told through image and music only. And over half of this film besides that is told the very same way. Just watch the scenes of Conan finding his sword (Atlantean Sword) or the scenes where they are travelling (Theology/Civilization and The Leaving/The search) or even the long scene where they are invading the Tower of Set. Basil Poledouris did a great job here and this remains my favorite score of all time. I recommend this, along with this movie.

The documentary on this DVD, Conan Unchained, is filled with many interesting facts and really gives you an idea of what they had to go through to make this movie. Also on this DVD are deleted scenes, which for the most part are not very interesting and cut for good reason. However, there is one scene near the end of this film that does not belong here at all. Before the battle at the mound, Conan and Subotai talk about being young boys which cuts against the entire philosophy of this film, which was having a minimal amount of dialogue. This scene clearly breaks the rule and was a bad decision to put back into this film. It does make the film longer but also slows it down at a point where it really didn't need it. The added little sections at the end with the kings daughter are not as bad, but still unessential and should have stayed in the deleted scenes section. This only goes to prove that the longest version of a film is not always the best one. There are many examples of this if you've ever bought a directors or extended cut of any movie.

There is also a great commentary featuring the director (John Milius) and Arnold. This alone is worth getting this DVD. So buy this and enjoy it for exactly what it is. This film gets five stars, even with the scenes that were added. Enjoy!

Phenomenal Sword and Sorcery Film.......2007-01-14

A small handful of Sword and Sorcery films have decent quality. "Conan the Barbarian" is one of those few films. Arnold Schwarzenegger was perfect for playing Conan. I only wish that Schwarzenegger had made more than two Conan movies.

We meet Conan as a boy in a small village. Conan's life changes dramatically when Thulsa Doom (played by the ever-awesome James Earl Jones) and his band of merry men destroy Conan's village, kill his mother and father, and haul the children off into slavery. Slavery does not kill Conan, it makes him stronger. Conan becomes an incredibly powerful adult. Conan becomes so powerful that he ends up in fights for money. Eventually Conan's master sets him free.

Conan manages to make his way in the world. He eventually encounters a thief named Subotai. Conan and the thief decide to rob a temple, but a beautiful woman named Valeria is already trying to do the same thing. Conan almost instantly falls in love. Conan, Subotai and Valeria rob the temple, but only after killing a huge snake belonging to Thulsa Doom.

Somewhere during Conan's travels we learn that Conan wants to exact revenge on Thulsa Doom for destroying his village and killing his parents. Even though Thulsa Doom tries to kill Conan, and nearly succeeds, Thulsa Doom fails to realize that Conan is a powerful and terrible enemy. On the other hand, Conan is fortunate in finding a wizard (the late Mako, who is also the narrator) who is able to save him from the death that Thulsa Doom had planned for him.

The situation heats up for everyone as Conan attempts to take the daughter of King Osric (Max Von Sydow). Thulsa Doom is not pleased, but after his best attempt he is still unable to kill Conan and he is still unable to recapture the princess.

The end of the movie is almost anticlimactic, but it is chilling and artistic. If you have only seen this movie on television you need to get the DVD and see the uncut version.

Some scenes in this movie are incredible. The entire scene in Thulsa Doom's palace is gross, but realistic. The sword play throughout the movie is well done. The snake arrows were also nicely filmed. I also enjoyed the scene with the Witch. The scene where the wizard attempted to cure Conan used animation sparingly but effectively was also very well done.

There is some controversy among fans over the original ending and the expanded ending. The controversy exists because the original ending was taut, much like Conan himself. The expanded ending adds more film footage without added anything to the movie. The original ending is somewhat better. However, the original ending is not worth paying a lot of money for, so if the expanded version is the lowest cost version available, you should get it.

Sword and Sorcery is a relatively narrow genre. Very few movies are made in this genre and even fewer are very successful. "Conan the Barbarian" is one of the very best and a must-have for fans of Sword and Sorcery. If only film makers would give us more movies like this one.

The only live-action Dr. Seuss movie for nearly a half-century, this delightful musical comedy is a treat--something for kids who thought they have seen everything. Young Bart (Tommy Rettig of TV's Lassie) detests his piano lessons with the fanatical Dr. Terwilliker (Hans Conried). As with Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Bart falls into a dream world in which the piano teacher--renamed Dr. T--is ruler and children are hunted down to have piano lessons. Worse yet, Dr. T has magical control over Bart's mom (Mary Healy). The Oscar-nominated songs are uneven but the art direction is superb, creating a truly magical world (and the world's longest piano). Dr. Seuss's love for language stays intact. Many kids of the 1950s might remember Bart's five-fingered beanie, which was a top seller. Great fun for the 5-10 age range, and adults too. --Doug Thomas

Wildly imaginative, deliriously kooky film was co-written by Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss), and captures the fun, off-kilter spirit of his books. Some over-the-top set pieces get showcased in saturated `50s Technicolor, sure to keep viewers of all ages glued to the screen. Conried is a hoot as the maniacal Doctor, Rettig refreshingly understated as Bart, and Hayes appealing as Zabladowski, the affable plumber (!) who comes through in the clinch. Sure-fire family entertainment, suitable for younger kids.

Classics are good!.......2007-05-13

I remember watching this so many Saturdays mornings on my local TV station. When I caught it late night on AMC I knew I had to show it to my kids. Some songs were so stuck in my head that I was able to sing along. It wowed my kids with all the crazy Seuss details...the costumes and set design are a hoot! I loved the words and dialog. The story is a bit simple, but then most of life's pleasures are. Try it...you will like it.

First of all, I'm reviewing the DVD product and not the movie.

This is one of those movies that you either get or you don't. If you've searched for this movie and bought it, chances are you "get it" so I won't write about the movie itself.

This is possibly the most disturbing, unique, and fun kids movie ever. I wish there had been some sort of documentary on the DVD. Even if all the original people involved in the production are no longer with us, just some commentary from a film historian would have been interesting. Just what impact did this film have when it was released in 1952?

Also, the DVD navigation acted strangely. When I was in the bonus cartoon the "return to menu" function on my DVD player didn't work. I had to hit stop and reboot the DVD to get out of the cartoon and back to the main menu.

The "bonus cartoon" however was a wonderful surprise: an original "Gerald McBoing Boing" cartoon (Gerald McBoing Boing's Symphony). I'd never seen one of these and I totally loved it.

So, I got a great and fascinating movie and a wonderful bonus cartoon, but I was left wanting to learn more, and all I had left to look at were a few black and white still pictures from the production.

Living Dr. Suess.......2006-03-17

With script and set design by Dr. Suess, this 1952 film is a visual treat. It is both timeless and a 1950's time capsule. The stars are Peter Lind Hayes and Mary Healy, a popular married duo of the times who have slid into history. The main struggle is between piano teacher Dr. T played by Hans Conried [voice of Disney's TV Magic Mirror and Jay Ward's Snidley Whiplash] and his reluctant student Bart played by Tommy Rettig before he became Lassie's original TV owner. Dr. T wants the bored Bart to practice his piano playing for a recital, but Bart wants to go outside and play baseball. Hayes is a returning veteran working as a plumber who spars/sparks with Healy as Bart's mom, widowed by the Korean Police Action. The bulk of the film is a Suessian dream sequence featuring such set pieces as a dancing hypnosis duel between Hayes and Conreid, a roller skating duel between Hayes and a pair of twins joined at the beard, and the demented dance of the non-piano players. Then there is the giant piano where 500 children [the 5,000 Fingers]play simultaniously There are atomic fears, the powerless place of children, family bonding, Freudian symbolism, meglomania, and musical prejudice. Most of deeper themes will appeal to adults while the younger viewers will enjoy the fantasy [that becomes darker before rising to a happy ending] elements which stand the test of time over 50 years later. I am very pleased that it is finally on DVD.
