Rocky director John Avildsen championed the briefly famous New Jersey high school principal Joe Clark in this upbeat 1989 drama. Morgan Freeman plays the tough-love educator who wields a baseball bat and bullhorn to keep discipline in his hallways and to motivate underachieving students to keep their acts together. After establishing Clark's controversial methods and showing him giving some punks the boot, Avildsen relies on the usual school-drama clichés to fill out the rest of the movie, including a challenge to Clark's philosophy from timid authorities. Freeman makes a strong impact as Clark, his dignity and integrity a sometimes awesome thing. Avildsen, however, is going for a Rocky-esque emotional crescendo. --Tom Keogh

Description

Based on the true story of new jersey high school principal Joe Clark, who wins the support and respect of his students for his controversial methods in ridding the school of violent students and drug dealers.

2 out of 5 stars For Morgan Freeman Fans Only.......2007-08-26

Morgan Freeman's excellent performance is the only redeemable element of this misguided effort. Freeman plays a Principal who applies a no-nonsense get-tough approach to reforming a terrible public school. Along the way, he does a few things I agree with and many things I strongly take exception to.

He appoints himself Dirty Harry of the educational system. He expels all the hardcore troublemakers in one dramatic action. I agree in theory. Take out the trash. Get rid of the dealers, thugs and gangmembers who are a detriment to all students. This is more fantasy than reality. If only it were that simple. Expulsion is a process dependent on provable behavior. In other words, you can't expel a student based solely on the student's bad reputation or past behavior. You have to actually catch them. Chaining the doors to keep drug dealers out is cutting off your nose to spite your face. There has to be a better way than breaking the law and endangering lives.

He constantly bullies, berates, yells at, and otherwise behaves in a hateful manner toward his teachers. Also he demotes and fires teachers at whim. Even if a teacher is the worst, most indifferent teacher in the history of education, this hateful behavior is unprofessional, immature and just plain unwise. Not only does it foster devisiveness; I refuse to believe the teacher's union would tolerate his behavior. His desk would be piled chest-high with union grievances in a week. Also, it is horribly unprofessional to have adult conversations, chastise, discipline or argue with an adult in front of the children. If a principal disrespects the teachers in front of the students, it teaches the students to disrespect the teachers. Also, it blurs the adult/child boundaries. The principal's public defiance of the mayor, fire marshal, parents and anyone who disagrees with him sets a horrible example. Children mimic behavior and attitudes.

He is constantly threatening, grabbing, pushing, dragging and smacking the children. Again, you simply cannot do that in real life and expect to keep your job for very long. The rooftop scene is straight out of a comic book. Also, baseball bats have no place in a school.

Most of this controversial behavior happens in the first hour of the movie. The second hour is mostly inspirational pep rally and cheerleading type stuff. The tough but occasional fair and kind boss becomes beloved by his students and staff and there is the inevitable showdown between him and his and those who oppose his methods. Predictable, if not particularly believable, results ensue.

The movie makes interesting and probably unintentional points about the danger of dictatorships. One person in charge with one set of ideas and rules inspires follow-the-leader groupthink. Children are especially vulnerable to charismatic leadership. This is why diversity of authority and opinions is crucial. It is all good and well for a principal to say "I'm the boss" to the students but behind the scenes he must work openmindedly with teachers and administration and answer to the school board and parents.

Although well-acted by Freeman, i can't recommend this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Ahead of Its Class.......2007-05-03

'Lean on Me' takes another educational figure and puts him at the head of the class. Hot-tempered, but motivational, Joe Clark (Morgan Freeman) takes the helm of New Jersey's East Side High School once the seat of academic excellence. Facing undaunting turmoil, the school he has but one year to shape up is full of drug dealers, fights, and general mayhem. Knowing that to get anyone to obey the rules, you have to enforce all, Clark "takes no prisoners" and armed with a megaphone and locks to keep criminals out, he gives his student body a whole new outlook on life. But between his scornful nemesis, Leona Barrett (Lynne Thigpen) and a desperate and unpopular mayor (Alan North), he has more than his martinet sensibilities to keep in check.

Seeing Morgan Freeman not play someone sage and mellow is a real treat. Sometimes his character makes us laugh and smile, especially when we see his soft heart behind the tough talk. With a convincing set of actors and situations, the story doesn't try to whitewash the problems or the hero's idiosyncracies. Unsurprisingly done by 'Rocky' director John Avildsen, 'Lean on Me' does inspiration with class.

4 out of 5 stars Lean all the way toward seeing this movie!!!.......2007-04-21

With so many true story movies out there, I'm glad to say this is a good one. Now, saying that Mr. Clark aka Morgan Freeman did a great job. Sometimes he seems heartless but in the interior of his heart, he does care! I thought there was some funny parts, some great uplifting parts, and parts that made you feel sorry for "real schools" that goes through "real life drama" of education. I love when they sang in the bathroom the school song, well, the new remix of it. It's a great movie. I like it and recommend it to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Story for Educators.......2007-04-15

This is a story about Eastside High School in Paterson, NJ which was once considered one of the best high schools in the country. Over the years, the high school deteriorated to a school full of violence and drugs. Their test scores and graduation rates were so deplorable, the state was considering taking over the school.

A new principal, Joe Clark (Morgan Freeman's character), was hired in an effort to save the school. Even though he had a military-style of leadership, he really cared about the kids and instilled in them the value of education. He told them that if they failed, they shouldn't blame their parents or blame the white man. Since the majority of the school was poor African-Americans and Hispanics, he told them that if they didn't get an education, they would be locked out of the "American Dream" that they so heavily viewed on television. He let them know that the one and only reason they would fail would because of themselves. They were responsible for succeeding. His message was that students should not lean on excuses.

Joe Clark turned the school around, and even though he could have been more supportive of his faculty, the school was so far gone that it need his disciplinary leadership. Most of all, he instilled in the students responsibility and pride, and that is quite an accomplishment.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Film!.......2007-01-20

Morgan Freeman's role in "Lean on Me" is typical of the kind of roles he's particularly good at: "My way or the highway." He nearly sinks his own efforts to turn around a failing school by acting as if he ALONE is the only one that can get the job done. This is a lesson for every administrator out there: "Lean on" Your Staff/Faculty. Give your staff and faculty the respect they are entitled to and they will work for you and the students much better than if you brow beat them and circumvent their authority as professional educators. It is only when Freeman's character learns this that things begin to go his well-intentioned way.

NOTE: This outstanding film is now packaged with another outstanding film on education, Stand and Deliver/Lean on Me. These films are worthy of a place in your DVD collection.

The dialogue is laughable, and the plot is by the numbers. But if you're a surfer (or an armchair surfer), this ultra-silly movie may prove hard to resist. It's the one about the kid from Arizona (Matt Adler), who's surfed only on artificial waves in that landlocked state, coming out to spend his last free summer hitting the serious water of Hawaii. He falls in with a mystical surf guru (Gregory Harrison), one of those surf-Zen masters obsessed with the cosmic significance of hanging ten, but he's also tempted by the flashier stunts of the younger surf crowd. Oh, and the Arizona kid also gets romantic with the prettiest girl on Oahu (Nia Peeples), which precipitates trouble with her resentful native family. If the story's no winner, the surfing action is excellent, with many real-life surfers contributing their talents. For shredders, a guilty pleasure. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Awesome 80s B Movie!.......2007-08-27

The first time I saw this was when I was really drunk in college about 5 years ago. I was on the couch with my 40 ounce of King Cobra flipping through channels trying to find something to watch. I started watching this because I'd always wanted to go to Hawaii and at the time I lived in Tempe Arizona (just like the main character).

I instantly got sucked into the movie. It's definitely cheesy, it's a B movie, and it has a huge 80s feel to it. But you can't help but cheer for the main character. And Nia Peeples is extremely hot.. wow. I love just about any movie about Hawaii. Since then, I've had a chance to see a lot of Hawaii first hand and even though I didn't become a surf champ, I did have fun bringing up this movie when I was at the bar talking to locals.

The two biggest reasons to get this movie: 1. Turtle and 2. the soundtrack. The surfing scenes are great. You will never find a movie that tries so little to be good and ends up being so great.

5 out of 5 stars The film of my dreams.......2007-01-25

this film is really beautifful, the history is wonderful, and at this moment i've not received that yet, so i'm really exciting for receive and see again tha Rick Kane's and kiany's love history.

4 out of 5 stars 'Rudy' Meets 'Gidget' (sort of).......2006-12-16

This is a cheesy 80's movie that was released at the height of the neo-surf craze in the 1980's. Unfortunately, I fell victim to that. Still, it's funny to see this movie- a time when Town & Country Surf Designs and Quiksilver reigned supreme.

This movie tells the story of Rick Kane (Matt Adler), a surfer from Tempe, Arizona, who decides to travel to Hawaii to conquer the 'monster' waves of the North Shore (filmed on location in Hawaii) before he heads to art school in New York in the fall. Rick thinks he has the skills to surf the North Shore after winning a surf contest in a simulated wave tank. Unlilke the proverbial 'fish out of water,' Rick soons finds that he is an unwelcome fish in water, and he's in over his head.

When he arrives in Hawaii, Rick meets a couple of surfers who teach him a few things- one of them being that he's not ready to surf the North Shore (great cinematography); however, Rick continues to insist he can surf with the best. Instead, Rick learns that the waves of the North Shore are nothing like the simulated waves of Arizona. After a run-in with the locals (the Hui), Rick learns that 'haoles' like him are not welcome in Hawaii and that he'd better stay out of the locals' way both on land and in the water.

Soon after, young Rick meets a local named Turtle, who introduces him to Chandler (Gregory Harrison), a local surfer and surfboard maker who has accepted the customs of the locals and their culture. Under the guidance and tutelage of Chandler (kind of like Yoda training Luke Skywalker), Rick gradually learns to surf. More importantly, though, Rick learns that true surfers are out on the waves because they love it out there, not because they seek fame and fortune. Rick also happens to meet a local girl named Kiani (Nia Peeples- hot!) who is sympathetic to Rick and helps him feel more comfortable during his stay in Hawaii.

As Rick gets better, he captures the attention of a local surf photographer who convinces him to enter the Pipeline Classic. This provides Rick the opportunity to compete with the world's best surfers even though entering the contest conflicts with Chandler's philosophy of being a 'Soul Surfer.' Still, Rick enters the contest and soon finds himself in competition with Lance Burkhart, his one-time hero.

Will Rick have enough skill to beat Lance Burkhart and achieve his dream of surfing fame? I guess you'll have to stay loose, barney, and watch the whole movie.

3 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet.......2007-05-06

Just got back from the North Shore and was missing it. Saw the video and bought it. Its fast paced with no narration, just tunes. It was short only 30 minutes with only quick views of Halewia and none of the bay! . Its just basic nice waves and surfing. I was disappointed because a video is needed catching the whole vibe of the North shore Area. The story and feel beyond the great surfing. The Real shaved ice, the shrimp trucks, the ranch, the small great restaurants and the local "underground" flavor. Even hit on the locals vs. high rise development angle. Its a treasure, and by the way don't go.

5 out of 5 stars "Everyone Here Knows Everything".......2005-01-03

Imagine a movie about a strange utopian nether-realm in which no one over the age of 35 exists; in which privacy of deed and thought is not an option; in which the greatest threat to social order is one's growth as a human being; in which food has been entirely replaced by coffee and cigarettes. No, it isn't a remake of 1984 or Logan's Run -- it's this movie, this really good comedy about a community in San Francisco called North Beach.

At a glance, it chronicles the misadventures of a guy named Tyler, whose girlfriend Paige puts the screws to him after he messes around with a 19-year-old stripper from New Orleans. It's a well constructed plot, certainly worth the price of the DVD to watch it unfold firsthand, but perhaps more interesting (for the purposes of this review, at least) is everything else this movie is at the same time: a heartfelt tribute to the North Beach community itself, and a heartfelt tribute to that other strange utopian nether-realm: the one between leaving school and embarking on real adulthood.

Any fact-based setting has two potential onscreen personalities: the one synthesized by a team of L.A. location scouts, and the one revealed by people who know and love the place, who understand its real chemistry and know how to capture it -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. The latter has been achieved with such easy humor by director Mortenson and company that within fifteen minutes you feel like you're watching old friends in a place that's somehow very familiar. If you find yourself rolling your eyes in exasperation -- either from Tyler and/or his oddball friends, or from the chronic Bay Area parking menace (a problem finally given the screen time it deserves) -- it is because these characters are flawed the way real friends are flawed, and so is this funky little neighborhood.

You can shrug your shoulders and forgive these flaws so readily, as is true with real friends, because they are portrayed with such honesty and genuine affection. You've seen some of the faces before: "Robbie the Lush" is a haunted overnight courier in a DHL commercial; "Pete the Rock Star" appears in everything from IBM Small Business ads to Doritos ads to HBO's Band of Brothers; Gabrielle Anwar (Scent of a Woman, The Three Musketeers) lends her big-screen clout in a role heralded simply as "The Cameo". This kind of who-are-we-trying-to-fool sensibility belies the confidence and understated skill of the filmmakers and performers alike: it's easy to forget that you're watching a movie, no small feat for a first feature-length effort.

(The camaraderie so evident onscreen carries over behind the scenes as well: director Mortenson and company provide an entertaining commentary track over a few rounds of beer, and finally confirm for audiences everywhere that yes, people do take restroom breaks when they record those things.)

But the real heart of the movie lies in its portrayal of the stasis and claustrophobia that can occur when friends know each other too well, when the routines that carry us through school and the first few years after begin to feel less like freedom and more like prison. At the heart of Tyler's floundering around and f***ing things up is the understanding that he needs to move on to the next step, no matter how scary or unpredictable that can be. It is interesting that, in a movie so intently focused on the ins and outs of the North Beach community, specific mention is made that the stripper Tyler has embraced is from somewhere else; his attempt to escape what North Beach has become to him is misdirected, but he knows escape is necessary. It is painful truth that the solution to Tyler's problem lies in his relationship with Paige all along, and that he doesn't realize it until it may be too late. As Tyler's dialogue with "Veronica the Player" brings to light, his crime isn't necessarily his indiscretion with the stripper; everybody in this group has been in bed with everybody else. His crime lies in the fact that Paige is beyond that kind of casual silliness, and therein lies the path to adulthood that he knows he needs, but has probably lost.

But that's a lot more film-school crap than is really necessary here. The bottom line is, North Beach is a funny movie, well crafted and well acted; it's a great portrait of this interesting place and its offbeat population; let's hope to God this ain't it for Morty and friends, because I sense many more good movies up their sleeves. Do yourself a solid and click that "Add to Cart" button up there.

5 out of 5 stars North Beach-- the never seen MUST SEE.......2004-08-31

This movie is HI-larious. I have been waiting for a DVD to come out once I heard that it might not get a full national release (I heard it had something to do with the physical film format, not content).

This is a real person's comedy. Excruciatingly funny, mostly because it doesn't try too hard to be so. That and Richard Speight, Jr. (who did a dramatic turn in "Band of Brothers") is brilliant here as (co) director and actor.

For anyone who has lived in an urban setting and understood the idea of 'people in the neighborhood," you'll get it. Also, if you've ever hooked up while drunk and hoped your girlfriend would never find out, yeah-- you'll get it too.

Oddly, this is one of the only modern San Francisco movies I can think of that doesn't feature the gratuitous gay character. But then again, that left me thinking: "They live in SF and don't have any gay friends? Not even the girls?" Then again, we hardly hang out in the same clubs late night, which sort of starts this roller-coaster.

I feel special that I only got to see this by chance at a local film festival. And I feel the film-makers and film-goers have been robbed. This would have been a hit in wide release, as it is so far removed from the lowest-common-denominator romantic-comedy scholck the major studios churn out, and so far above.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!!.......2004-08-27

I saw this at the San Francisco Film Festival a while back. A great story about the lifestyle of North Beach with a humorous story. The story takes place the morning after the protagonist cheats on his girlfriend. The protagonist, after doing his daily rounds of visiting local cafes, etc. quickly realizes that there is no such thing as a secret in North Beach. The sound on the DVD is great and the movie has a kick ass soundtrack with SF local bands like the Uninvited and Vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT MOVIE!.......2004-08-26

I saw this at the Cinequest Film Festival a few years ago and have been waiting for it to come out on DVD. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is either young or young at heart. It's a little rough around the edges, with a lot of language, but if you can handle that it's a great little movie. The DVD is just as good as the film, serving up a variety of entertaining extras, like a hilarious director's commentary that's just as funny and irreverant as the film, a fantastic trailer, and the not-to-be missed "North Beach, the condensed version". A great home video find for any collection!

For established champions and aspiring pipeliners alike, the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is like a greatest-hits collection that never goes out of style. This 65-minute surf-orgy covers all three competitions in the 22nd annual Triple Crown challenge, which is essentially the Stanley Cup, World Series, and Super Bowl of surfing, all rolled into one awesome showdown on the most challenging breaks of Oahu's north shore. It's there, in the tropical winter of 2004, that the world's greatest surfers showed up to compete against the best of the best, a stellar lineup of veterans and newcomers including Derek Ho, Mark "Occy" Occilupo, Phillip MacDonald, brothers Bruce and Andy Irons, Tom Carroll, and many others. The TC tour is comprised of the Vans Hawaiian Pro tournament at Haleiwa (which many consider the "scariest" break of all, with huge waves on a shallow-water base); the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach ("the most challenging," some say); and the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters competition at Pipeline, where the biggest breaks (and a deadly reputation) cause even the boldest surfers to get a case of the jitters. It's there that finalists Jamie O'Brien, Kalani Robb, Bruce Irons, and six-time Triple Crown winner Sunny Garcia (the first surfer to surpass $1 million in prize money) compete for the title of "best in the world," and director Bill Kiely's camera crew is there, in the roiling surf, to capture all the action. While not as visually awesome as Billabong Odyssey, this Triple Crown survey has more to offer for seasoned surfers and pros-in-the-know, providing an insider's view of the race for their most coveted prize. The pounding rock soundtrack (parental advisory suggested, for "f-word" lyrics) is excerpted on a bonus disc with eight tracks from various artists (Death by Stereo, Matchbook Romance, Pennywise and others) on the Epitaph label. --Jeff Shannon

First, why not make a documentry of the best from ALL of the past Triple Crown's, instead of just one, OK winter?! Also, I can't watch this again because Sunny Garcia makes me ill. He's the most unpleasant person in the entire history of surfing!

5 out of 5 stars 2004 VANS TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFING.......2005-10-21

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is like what the Stanley Cup is to Hockey, the Super Bowl to football, and Indy 500 is to Cart Racing...Simply put its the mecca of surfing.

The crew at WINDOWSEATpictures captured the emotion, essence, and one of the best contests in years on the N.Shore. The cinematography, in-depth interviews and the drama of Sunny Garcia capture his 6th Triple Crown title was amazing. The edits were on point, the music just gets you psyched on wanting you to grab your board and hit the beach. If you are surfer this video is definitely worth checking out and keeping in the vault.

Description

Hills of Old Wyoming - When cattle rustlers raid the Bar-20 Ranch, Hopalong Cassidy and his boys trace the thieves to a nearby Indian reservation where not everything is as it appears. The reservation authorities try to arrest the cowboys, who must shoot their way to freedom in order to uncover the real culprits - a crooked government agent and his gang.

North of the Rio Grande - Hopalong's brother, Buddy, has been gunned down by train robbers and his young wife made a widow. Out for justice, Hoppy rides into the town of Cottonwood Gulch posing as a notorious bandit looking to join the gang of thieves. Conspiring with the president of the railroad (a young Lee J. Cobb in his first screen appearance), Hoppy uncovers the hidden identity of the bandit leader and corrals the cunning villain.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hopalong Cassidy.......2006-03-23

I watched his TV shows faithfully when I was a kid. Loved the white haired, black hat hero. Of course, I loved Roy Rogers, Cisco Kid, Paladin, Gene Autry--all the westerns.

5 out of 5 stars "best of the 'B' Westerns from the early '30s...HOPPY!".......2001-10-11

The most outstanding series of westerns began in 1935 from Paramount Pictures under the guiding hand of producer Harry "Pop" Sherman...continued well into the '40s proved to be the most successful 'B' Westerns ever made...based on Clarence E. Mulford's stories, they strived in changing Cassidy's image, which was both original and influential...the hero, played by William Lawrence Boyd, was mature and generally rather inactive, and the plots also tended to inactivity until a sudden burst of climactic action in the last reel, usually a frantic chase backed by tension-building music.

In all, Boyd made sixty-six Hopalong Cassidy Westerns, early films included Uncle Ben and Windy Halliday, both played by veteran actor George "Gabby" Hayes...was a steady favorite as a hitchrack, was chosen five years in succession as one of the 10 best money-making Western sidekick stars...like most western comics, had his share of narrow escapes being thrown from his horse, burned by blanks...but that was all in a days work...his one-liners will never be forgotten..."You're dern tootin'"..."Never trust a female, they're pure poyzin"...or my all-time favorite ~ "Persnickgordy Women"...this crusty old-timer stole many a scene from John Wayne, Randolph Scott and yes even William Boyd.

"Hills of Old Wyoming", features Stephen Morris (Morris Ankrum) using both names on the screen, as the "western heavy", came to Hollywood and Westerns directly from supporting Orson Welles on Broadway, Sherman and Boyd must have seen the evil this actor could portray, as he appeared in several "Hoppy films"...another pick for "Pop" Sherman was a new sidekick for the Cassidy films...a newcomer Lucky Jenkins, played by Russell Hayden had his job cut out for him, with Boyd (as the hero) and Hayes (for comedy), left the field of romance and action wide open, Hayden filled those "boots" perfectly.

"North of the Rio Grande", Morris Ankrum again, with a young Lee J. Cobb as one of the good guys...as the Bar-20 gang strive to derail the plans of evil, so that good and right can prevail...this was the formula that director Nate Watt used in all the "Hop-A-Long Cassidy" films, and it worked!

        Product Description

Volume 7 from The Journal's landmark series about the world's great wave and their influence on our surfing culture. For almost 40 years, Australian surfers have greeted the world as talented, outspoken and adaptable, and this has everything to do with the near-endless variety of Down Under beaches and surf spots. Three of Australia's best-known breaks ñ Queensland's Kirra Point, Victoria's Bell's Beach, and North Narrabeen in New South Wales ñ are presented in this edition of the Surfer's Journal. Watch 15' surf at Bells for the 1981 Rip Curl Pro. Cringe at the rough dominance of the North Narrabeen Boardriders Club in the 1970s. Rock back and forth and moan softly as Gold Coast surfers race inside the tube at Kirra for 50 yards at a stretch. A capsule history is offered foreach spot, along with a generous collection of details and anecdotes. Over 100 interviews were taped for the 1998 "Great Waves" series, and on-screen comments for the Australian shows come from Wayne Lynch, Mark Richards, Wayne Bartholomew, Tom Carroll, Cheyne Horan, Jack Mayes, Peter Townend, Damien Hardman, Barton Lynch, Ian Cairns, Nathan Hedge, Mark Warren, Gordon Woods, Mark Occhilupo, Shaun Tomson, Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, Terry Fitzgerald, Simon Anderson, Peter Drouyn, Barton Lynch and others.
