At first glance, What's Cooking? looks like it was dreamed up by some politically correct screenwriting committee: a series of overlapping stories that intercut among four families (one Hispanic, one Vietnamese, one African American, one Jewish) all preparing for Thanksgiving dinner. But what could be toothless and smarmy is made gripping and genuinely affecting by a mixture of observant writing, fluid direction, and a truly superb ensemble of actors, including Mercedes Ruehl, Alfre Woodard, Joan Chen, Julianna Margulies, Kyra Sedgewick, Dennis Haysbert, and a host of less well known but just as capable others. The script is a marvel of orchestration: small annoyances blossom into fierce conflicts, secrets are deftly revealed, and sanctimoniousness is subtly punctured. The acute but sympathetic portrait of family stress and tension is layered with quiet observations about race and class, as well as the capacity for tolerance and forgiveness. It's recently become a cliché to have characters express themselves through food (examples include Soul Food, Big Night, and Eat Drink Man Woman), but What's Cooking? turns food into a witty exploration of culture as everyone prepares their turkeys in entertainingly different ways--this is not a movie to watch on an empty stomach. Warm without false sentiment, What's Cooking? is deeply enjoyable. --Bret Fetzer

Good Movie.......2007-08-13
I liked the diverse stories presented in this movie. The Vietnamese family could have had a more accurate portrayal.
Thanksgiving through the eyes of many............2007-06-12
WHAT'S COOKING is a really well-made film about Thanksgiving meals in the homes of four different families (Vietnamese, Mexican-American, African-American and Jewish). The intersecting stories are dramatic, engrossing and touch on subject matter like homosexuality, interracial dating, extramarital affairs and gang violence. I don't want to ruin your experience with this film by getting too involved in plot details. I will say that it manages to depict families from different cultures, celebrating the same holiday together, in an incidental manner so as not to appear excessively "Rainbow Coalition" and politically correct (in other words, you won't feel a chorus of "Kumbaya" coming on). What's more, it has "an all star" cast, including Alfre Woodard and Mercedes Ruehl. I think you'll enjoy it!
What's Cooking?.......2007-02-13
I had borrowed this title from the library to show at Thanksgiving last year, and my enjoyed it so much she asked for a copy, it's that good a film.
Great Movie.......2007-01-10
This was one of my wife's all time favorite movies and we wanted our own copy.
The Best Food I've ever had!!.......2006-10-29
Just simply oustanding. Mercedes Ruehl and Kara Sedwick were top-notch. They definitely made the movie. It just puts on point the fact the world is a small, small place. The interlacing of the 4 families told a wonderful story.

The teenage girls of the Angel Brigade have a tough assignment: find the mysterious Lost Technology of the old Galactic Network. Their chances seem to improve when Milfeulle (presumably a misspelling of the name of the pastry Millefeuille) joins Forte, Ranpha, Vanilla, and Mint on the job. Milfeulle has a natural luck that rivals Gladstone Gander's in the old Carl Barks comics, and she needs it to compensate for her naive klutziness. No one in the Brigade knows what the Lost Technology is, nor are they in much of a hurry to find it. It's difficult to understand what the film makers are trying to do in this sci-fi comedy-adventure. Galaxy Angel lacks the raunchy humor of Slayers or Burn Up Excess, the hard-hitting action of Bubblegum Crisis or Gunsmith Cats, and the strong interpersonal friendships of Patlabor. There's no here here. (Rated 13 and older but suitable for viewers four years younger: minor cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

I don't know whats cooking.......2006-03-13
Cute anime for little girls but I'm not into this cause they don't have naked chicks. This series is too girly for me (P.U.)
What a collection!.......2006-02-25
Since seeing my first Galaxy Angel episode in 2005, I decided I wanted to collect as many of the episodes as I could. The Galaxy Angel What's Cooking Limited Edition Box is a fine addition to my collection.
Granted, the box only contains the first DVD of the show with four episodes, but there is so much more inside! In addition to the DVD, a special booklet with part of the Galaxy Angel managa is enclosed, two pencil boards showing the girls in all the glory and even five figurines of the Angels!
Not only that, but the box can be used to hold all 4 DVD's of the series! For any Galaxy Angel fan, this is a good deal and a purchase I do not regret.
Hilarious Anime.......2006-01-16
When I picked up this DVD, I scanned the back and bought it. The next day I went to Best Buy and got the second DVD. This anime is hilarious, and light on your wallet since there are only 4 DVDs. Tons of replay value. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants anime girls bumbling through everything.
GA is the shining star of silliness in the universe!!!!.......2004-10-04
I loved the first volume of Galaxy Angel, even though there is nu plot so far OoO But all the crazy parodies and comedy make up for it! All 5 characters have a attractive charm to them which make them all watchable! Yes, even the silent and creepy Vanilla OoO;;;
Very recommended! Space adventure Parodies, guns, girly girls, gambling, Forte using the sharpshooter in a wrestling match, this DVD has it all!!!!!
^o^ By the way, Milfeulle rules! Though the missile "Nomat" "Normad" whatever, someone really needs to put the little guy out of his misery! After all,*spoiler*that's his destiny! *winks*
SAVING THE GALAXY ONE GARBAGE CAN AT A TIME.......2004-07-31
Let me just start this way: Galaxy Angel is very, very funny. The Angel Brigade is a branch of the Trasvaal Empire military, charged with finding "Lost Technology". In ancient times, there was a civilization that had reached the apex of technology until something called the Chronoquake destroyed it. Centuries later some of the Lost Technology showed up at the planet Transavaal, and allowed the planet to build the first starships. Soon, the planet had built a large empire spanning the universe. Other specimens of Lost Technology are scattered through the galaxy. The military sends the Galaxy Angels to gather it up. The problem is that noone knows what it looks like and sometimes it could be buried under miles of rock or on a world inhabited by space pirates. Well, anyway, the Angels are fully capable of doing their job, or are they?
There are five Angels and they are all memorable and distinct. Milfeulle is the newest member and she has an almost supernatural affinity for good luck. For instance, when the Angels are gambling in a casino, she proceeds to win everything in the joint. That is, until the owner tries to cheat her with a rigged roulette table. She calls a color and when the ball seems to rest in a position in which she will lose her money, a giant asteroid appears out of nowhere and after the impact the ball lands in the color she chose. She is a bit of a dummy though, but nice.
Forte is another Angel, and has a mannish voice, and guns are her specialty. Ranpha is Mrs. Glamour herself and is always falling for studly looking guys. She is also a great martial artist. Mint is the younger, more demure Angel that mainly stays back on the ship and controls the missions. Every once in a while she gets personally involved, like when she puts on a giant chicken costume to capture some kidnappers. Lastly, we have the most enigmatic member of the team, Vanilla H. Yes, that's right, her name is Vanilla H. You would almost think she was an android with her long blue hair, red eyes, and nurse-like white uniform and almost continuous silence. She looks very similar to and acts like Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion. That is, if you can picture Rei inserted into a comedy. Her deadpan comments are made even funnier by the craziness going on around her with the other girls.
Volume 1 was very funny and entertaining. While the Galaxy Angel's mission is to find Lost Technology, they always seem to end up with sorry jobs. For instance, cleaning up garbage in an asteroid belt, rescuing cats, returning school IDs to pirate infested schools, etc. Every once in a while, they do run into some fearsome adversaries, like a giant hamster that has a freakin' laser beam in his mouth! What can I say, this dvd was FUNNY! The animation was crisp and colorful. The characters were instantly distinguishable because they had such great personalities. The humor was right on. Especially funny was the episode where they find a world destroying sentient missle who can speak. The problem with the missle is that he doesn't want to blow up. The girls kinda smart off to it, and the missle says he's going to detonate. All of the girls cringe in fear. Then the missle laughs and says it was just joking!
Fun and highly recommended.
