3 out of 5 stars Three Words: Bump that Ish! .......2007-09-16

******SPOILER********

Yah Know......There are a series of events that happen within the first 5 minutes of the movie that if it were real life, there would not have BEEN a movie. I know I know, it's only a movie. Hollywood is allowed to make ANYTHING into a movie, even if everyone reading this review know that It Aint gonna happen. The movie was not boring, took a little long to get to the point, and I will admit, there were quite a few parts that made me yelp. The twist on the end was clever, and worth the wait, and seeing the movie for the second time, I looked out for signs of the twist early on! For the most part, I had three words to say: BUMP THAT ISH!

Event #1: There is a knock on your door at 11:00pm. You live in a secured building.

Event #2: You look through your peep hole, no one is there....>STOP!! The movie should have been over at this point, because had that been anyone with a brain, that whole little "knock" thing would have been completely ignored, and for DANG sure wasn't nobody opening the door! But lets say curiosity gets the best of you, and you open the door ANYWAY...

Event #3: On the floor in front of your apartment door, there is a big brown box on the floor, with your name and NO return address......>STOP!! With the wake of terrorist attacks, I am not TRUSTING the package because I don't know who dropped it off, I wasn't expecting a package, it's 11:00pm AND there's no return address? In what world does it constitute bringing that into your home? Hell, it wasn't even wrapped in pretty paper! I was PLAIN BROWN with black marker for goodness sake!! But let's say you are still curious ( I am pretty sure most of us were moaning at the main character at this point) and you bring that box into your home IGNORING ALL THE SIGNS.....

Event #4: Inside the box you find a creepy looking doll with the most evil look on his face.

Event #5: The box looks too much like a red satin lined coffin.

Event #6: Your psycho girlfriend starts singing a song about how this chick who loved ventriloquist dolls will kill you if you scream when she visits you in your dream......>STOP!! Okay, at this point there is a fire place within 4 feet of our main character......all those conditions make a perfect night for a fire....and a burning doll. And an ex-girlfriend. Movie is over, The End.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm just too old.......2007-09-16

I really can't understand how others think sometimes. Take this movie, for instance. It scared the Hell out of me. On the creepiness scale it was off the chart. Light on gore and strong on atmosphere, it is reminiscent of the great horror flicks of yesteryear, like the original version of The Haunting. The dolls alone are enough to give any sane person nightmares. So why all the negative reviews? What am I missing here?

If you're a blood and guts fan this one isn't for you. This film is heavy on suggestion and suspense, with special effects used more as the spice than the main treat. Call it a thinking person's horror movie if you like.

In any event, if you agree with my prior reviews of scary flicks you'll like this one a lot. If you don't then there's plenty of slasher trash out there on DVD to keep you busy for years - sad but true.

3 out of 5 stars Dead Silence went dead.......2007-09-15

I bought this in high expectations since it was made by the people of SAW (which was AMAZING). Leigh Whannell is one of my favorite movie writters but, no offense Leigh, but you did not do a great job on Dead Silence.

4 out of 5 stars pretty decent.........2007-09-12

I realize movies are very subjective....I liked this movie..not giving it 5 stars because there is room for improvement but I found the premise a bit spooky..and dolls always freaked me out as a child and so did dummies...(and clowns LOL).. I thought this was a good movie...(I also liked House of Wax..which I find similiar in the weirdness category..)

3 out of 5 stars Okay for what it is ...........2007-09-09

If you are looking for a silly horror diversion, this one fills the bill fine. Some weird gore, decent sets, a couple of decent jumps, and a very silly premise. It's improved by the actors who take it much more seriously than it deserves, but for a short horror flick it does have a few fun moments. Harmless fun. How old is Amber Valetta anyway?

Jeff Goldblum stars in Pittsburgh, a fly-on-the-wall comedy in which the Jurassic Park and Independence Day actor plays himself taking a career hit by playing Harold Hill in a regional theatre production of The Music Man. Despite the pleas of his agent to take a plum part in a new Michael Bay sci-fi epic, Goldblum locks himself into a two-week stint in his hometown of Pittsburgh in order to help his fiancée, actress Catherine Wreford (also playing herself)--cast in the musical as Hill's love interest, Marian--get a green card. The very idea of Goldblum taking on the larger-than-life role of con man Hill is hilarious, and he gamely plays up his absolute unsuitability for the job. While Golblum's anxiety goes up and up over botched rehearsals, other people in his life--especially good friend Ed Begley Jr. and Illeana Douglas--draw him into their own problems (Begley with a failed solar-power machine and Douglas with her ill-fated romance with Moby). Co-directed by Chris Bradley and Kyle LaBrache (Illeanarama), Pittsburgh is a remarkably energetic movie in which Goldblum appears to be working harder than he ever has before on screen, dancing and singing and throwing himself into a series of demanding scenes that often last no more than a few seconds. This is well worth a visit for fans of Goldblum or anyone who enjoyed the likes of Waiting for Guffman. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Jumps the Shark.......2007-09-05

Finally, being famous for being famous has jumped the shark. Some amusing moments, but really now, didn't this stuff die with Anna-Nicole Smith? Why not just get a season compendiums of the Larry Sanders Show?

If you're a faithful fan of E! Network, give it a whirl. Otherwise, skip it. You won't miss anything.

4 out of 5 stars Film is an absolute riot.......2007-08-30

I initially watched this movie primarily because I live in Pittsburgh and like Jeff Goldblum. But - even if you aren't from Pittsburgh and only moderately like Jeff Goldblum, this film is worth a watch and I would highly recommend it.

The film reminded me of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" where the central character (in this case, Goldblum) is the vortex with a cast of eccentric characters swirling around him.

Probably most funny are the scenes with Illeana Douglas and new beau Moby and Goldblum, who's trying really, really hard to like Moby, despite some of the stuff Moby is saying - and watching. There's also scene set in a parade with Douglas and Moby that is also very funny.

Watching Goldblum's mother and stepfather, you'll see the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Jeff's mom is a pip, 80 years young with a 57-year old husband (and - they've been married for 20 years!), who also has a not-so-secret crush on Illeana Douglas.

Also hysterical are Goldblum's exchanges with his agent/manager, whose voice mails to Goldblum become more and more frantic as Goldblum remains resolute in his decision to ditch Hollywood for the lead role of Harold Hill in the Music Man - giving up a multi-million dollar deal and the coveted first guest slot on Conan O'Brien.

Goldblum cast old friends, and you can see the affection and love he has for Douglas as well as Ed Begley Jr., who ropes Goldblum into becoming a reluctant spokesperson for what you guess is another one of Begley's get-rich-quick gadgets.

The quick glimpses you get of Pittsburgh are good - most exterior shots are on one of the famous sister bridges downtown and on streets downtown.

While the film is built around the premise of Goldblum doing Music Man as a way to be with his fiancee and prevent her from getting booted out of the US (she's Canadian and is here on a work visa), you see surprisingly little of her on screen. So while Goldblum talks and talks to his friends about how in love he is with Catherine, one sees only a short glimpse of that relationship.

Nevertheless, it is funny and smart and I would recommend it to anyone who likes smart, quirky comedies.

5 out of 5 stars 4.25 stars. An epic Vampire/Haunted house adventure tale........2007-08-25

I would describe Salem's Lot as an epic vampire/haunted house/ occult adventure tale that is fun with actual genuine scares and freaky visuals.

The first hour there is a lot going on in one night and it was fun. Everyone was planning what they were doing that night, there was anticipation of something to come, the antique store owner was making arrangements with the real estate man to have his shipment picked up, as he himself had plans to go to Boston, then the real estate man makes his arrangements with the truck driver to pick up said shipment. The truck driver has plans of his own and hires a cemetery worker and his friend to do the job for him so that he can spy on his wife who works with the real estate man who he believes she is having an affair with. His wife is making plans with the real estate man that she is in fact having an affair with. Our main character Ben Mears makes plans to have dinner with Susan Norton and her mother and father. A young boy is having two friends that are brothers over to study. We as viewers are all packed up and ready to watch this night and what is to come and were interested in each of the stories. The town has an energy and a buzz of something about to happen and it conveys that to the viewer. It gives you that feeling of maybe a Friday night when all kinds of plans are being made and there is anticipation and nervousness.
Soon a dog yelps, eerie fog and wind roll in, a boy is missing, doctors are called away from dinners, a mother faints, and there is something very strange about the shipment, this town of Salem's Lot gets a shot of adrenaline along with us watching.

I saw this for the first time tonight, this title for whatever reason had eluded me. I could see this being very scary to anyone who watches it at a young age, it has that potential to make you as a kid dread going to sleep and has visuals that will stick with you when you close your eyes, the kind of film that will stick with you and you'll remember it being scary as you grow up, for me that would be A Nightmare on Elm Street (Infinifilm Edition) or The Exorcist (25th Anniversary Special Edition). The film has fears children can relate too. For example young relatable boys who live in similar homes and surroundings as most viewers are victims and are visited at there windows by very eerie beings. For young kids watching Salem's Lot they all have to go to bed, there is that very real fear of the dark and unknown, they most likely all have windows to look out of after seeing this movie while there imaginations run wild and plays tricks on them. Parents are taken from there children in this movie, for kids those are there protectors and that fear of losing a parent is very real and hits home. Don't get me wrong seeing this at 29 years old the scares are still there, probably not any where near what this film would do if you saw it at a young age, but there are plenty haunting visuals and scenes that stick with you.

The atmosphere in my opinion could've been a bit better. For example last night I watched Wolfen. When they were outside you could feel the cold and see there breathe, if it were early in the morning it had that early morning feel. If the wind was blowing I believe it was actually blowing that day. To me watching Wolfen I could feel that it was autumn and cold, almost gave me a warm feeling sitting inside, being warm and watching it. In Salem's Lot when the wind blew you could tell it was done by a machine, everyone was dressed warm but it didn't have that cool scary night feel. To me that just gives the film more lifelike feel and makes it seem real. It's hard to put into words what you feel or what a movie can make you feel, I'm just taking a shot.

To me Salem's Lot is in the top 5 vampire movies and deserved it's three Emmy nominations. This maybe my favorite Tobe Hooper directed picture as well, along side the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Two-Disc Ultimate Edition). It is a must see for any one that is interested in the vampire, haunted house, or horror genre in general, it's an all around fun time.

One other thing, I heard poor things of the picture quality, I actually found it to be quite good and I'm very picky about that kind of stuff. The dvd is a bare bones and I didn't expect much but was satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars vampire movie of 1st order.......2007-07-10

this 1st rate movie will never be outdone by anyone. david soul, james mason, and lance kerwin really lived their parts. each character was real;even in the smallest role. i keep several copies just in case one is ruined or worn out.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent scares.......2007-07-07

Thanks to Tobe Hooper, this TV vehicle is more cinematic than not, and laced with true, prolonged hair-raising moments. With a healthy dose of sensuality as well, thanks to Bonnie Bedelia. I've never seen a more lovely vampire. I think David Soul puts in an excellent performance as well. Overall, it's not perfect, just a little creaky in places, but it sure tempts the hell out of me. The house interiors alone will make your skin crawl. The first appearances of 'the Master' are shocking. The kids clawing at the windows will cost you some sleep.

4 out of 5 stars Salem's Lot.......2007-05-17

This is one of the best movies made from one of Steven King's novels. It is so full of suspense!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best creepiest films out there.......2007-05-09

This is everything a horror film should be, great combo of Stephan King & Tobi Hooper, doesen't get any better than this. All the true aspects of horror and natural fear are here, very well done one of the best.

A Classic Prine Performance On DVD For The First Time!

For 35 years, John Prine has been writing, singing and recording amazing music. From his self-titled debut album in 1971 to his recent Grammy Award-winning Fair And Square, he is a true songwriting hero to his fans and peers. Discovered by Kris Kristofferson and covered by everyone from the Everly Brothers and Dwight Yoakam, to Bette Midler and 10,000 Maniacs, his original sound and affecting lyrics have given him a kind of stature and longevity uncommon in the music world.

Included in his set list are the early classics "Angel From Montgomery" and "Hello In There," as well as songs from his signature album, Bruised Orange. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nicely balanced presentation.......2007-07-12

The legendary Country-Folk artist has a real showcase here: a respectfully produced live show and documentary. We even get a '51 Ford!
Concert songs include "Automobile", "Angel From Montgomery", "Hello In There", and two with the great Rockabilly Billy Lee Riley, who duets with JP on "No Name Girl" and his (shoulda-been million-seller at the time) "Red Hot". This Sun Records exponent does his '50s thing - too bad he didn't contribute some harmonica, especially on "No Name Girl", a Bo Diddley beat (it's been written that BLR contributed to a Bo l.p., way back when).
John takes us back home in Illinois, to the backyard where he listened to Country sounds as a kid. With his original 1950s radio set on the back steps, he reminisces about his family and how he got started in music. Probably his best vocals are done right there, "Paradise" and "How Lucky" - his voice was a bit tired on stage, but his *music* is no less compelling.

4 out of 5 stars FINALLY!!.......2007-04-12

I saw this soundstage show when it first aired in 1980 and loved it. His backup band with John Burns is fantastic. My only disappointment with this dvd is that the sound quality is good but not great, so it might not get played as much as I'd like. i recognize that it's 27 years old, but as a comparison, Neil Young's Live at Massey Hall is 36 years old and that sound quality is fantastic. Go figure. Still a thumbs up and all true Prine fans should have it in their library.

4 out of 5 stars Great performance - poor quality disc.......2007-04-04

This is vintage Prine and I was definitely excited when I saw the announcement of the DVD release. However the video quality of the copy I bought is extremely poor with excessive dropout and lots of video noise. I've had a copy of this program which was recorded off the air on VHS 25 years ago and the quality is as good as this official DVD release.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for fans of great late70s/early80s American musicianship.......2007-03-27

A great sounding show and excellent performance from all involved, heart-wrenching at times and belly-laugh inducing at others.

The DVD authoring isn't fancy but it all works.

I was really surpised on how this movie was so different-To go back in time & change your life, was really unpredictable. It was just great!!!

4 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and good for an evening in................2007-02-16

For anyone who has ever longed for a second chance with the one they "gave away".....for anyone who has ever wished they could go back and do something over in a different way...have that second chance to say things that went unsaid or maybe to try and say them better...or even just the urge to re-experience a special point in time when "feeling" was what life was all about, this movie should be right up your alley.

It is a sweet and charming little love story that i have actually watched a few times.......and still like it!

4 out of 5 stars Unwrap The Christmas Joy.......2007-02-12

I must say I enjoyed this movie very much. It is a retrospective of Eve's
choices. Sometimes an individual looks back on a situation wishing that they could reexamine a decision. This movie is a fine example that Christmas is a magical time. That a person can get what they wish for.
Eve looks for happiness in New York, but she has to go home to Oregon and the road lest traveled. She finds happiness with Scott by making her Christmas wish.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of live albums or footage, but this one is exceptional. The fact that a third of the concert is played in driving rain actually makes it that much better. Also, shows the heart of the group.

The audio quality is superb; they really do a fantastic job on all the songs... they sound great. And the rain pouring down only adds to the overall effect - you really feel the connection with the fans during this concert. I watch this on a 42" HDTV plasma with an up-converting Oppo 981HD player in a 5.1 home theatre and guests I have over are completely mesmerized by the performance.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome concert.......2007-04-08

It's great to have these classic concerts on DVD. This was shot in Buffalo on or near the 4th of July. About half way through the DVD it started to rain and it must have been warm b/c as far as you can see on the DVD it was pouring and no one left.

Great DVD for background music at a party or just a relaxing night at home.

5 out of 5 stars New York Goo Goo Doll Concert.......2007-02-20

This CD DVD package is totally awsome! You would have thought that the rain would have ruined the concert but on the other hand it made it more exciting!! This is Tops!

4 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-01-04

The music was great and we absolutely love the Goo Goo Dolls, but the camera work and the footage was not very well done.

4 out of 5 stars recommended to period-piece fans.......2007-08-24

Stunning scenery. Good music. A broad sweep of characters and relationships in this three-hour extravaganza. Viewers who like grand-scale period movies such as "The Buchaneers" or "North and South" should enjoy this movie, even though the period is the present and the upper-class is Scottish rather than English. The film is PG-class with no naughty words or bare skin or any of the other things that some people object to.

If this movie had not been based on a Rosamunde Pilcher book, it would probably be very popular. But it invites comparisons with "The Shell Seekers" and "Coming Home", and unfortunately it comes in second by comparison. But on its own, it is quite a respectable movie with much to offer.

The tension is kept up by two on-going mysteries: who is the dead body shown at the beginning? and what is Lottie going to do? When you set up exciting questions like these, you have to have some exciting answers to them. This film doesn't. Lottie doesn't do anything. And the dead body is a disappointment. There is another disappointment. We are made to dislike Edmund at the beginning and are longing to see him get clobbered. He doesn't.

Also, even at three hours, with the large number of characters, we don't get a chance to get into the few interesting characters enough. So, even though we come to know who the characters are, who their relationships are, and what their problems are, we don't really get a chance to feel those problems as we do in "The Shell Seekers".

There is also a serious casting mistake in the casting of Edmund. Edmund is a guy with whom the most beautiful and interesting women fall madly in love at first sight. The actor who plays him has to be a stone fox. Michael York, to put it mildly, isn't. This casting mistake makes the main story incredible and also contributes to making the ending less than satisfactory. The appealing characters are Pandora (Jacqueline Bisset) and the Mariel Hemingway character. Since they are appealing, we would like to see them do well. Alas.

This is a very nice movie, I loved the setting and the actors play their parts
very skillfully.

4 out of 5 stars SEPTEMBER SONG.......2007-05-31

Enjoyed the dvd immensely. Stayed pretty close to the original story line I thought. The actors in the various roles played their parts very well. Like all Rosamund Pilcher stories, never want them to end.

3 out of 5 stars SEPTEMBER by Rosamund Pilcher .......2007-05-14

I really enjoyed this adaptation of Rosamund Pilcher's novel, September.
It was very true to the book, which is unusual these days.
The cast consists of some of Britain's tried and true actors, a factor that made it all the more enjoyable.

As a kid, I loved this movie! I'm so glad that it's finally getting the proper DVD release it deserves! I knew if I was "Patient" that it would be re-released and I wouldn't have to pay 100+ bucks for it. I am so going to pre-order this and it will be mine! (Giggles)

5 out of 5 stars The Doctor is In(sane).......2007-07-29

Once upon a time there lived a friendly small town Doctor who lived with his wife and son, Evan. But when his wife is diagnosed with a deadly heart disease, doc snaps and hurriedly rushes to find a suitable donor for his beloved. Since searching for a donor involves murdering the locals and cutting them open, doc is soon rumpled.
As the mob descends on him, doc manages to conceal young Evan away (sick - Cartman has spoofed this scene in South Park).

Years later a now adult and deranged Evan (Larry Drake `Darkman') escapes from a sanatorium, and heads home to set up his own practice.
After some one liners and kills involving various medical instruments Evan learns of local girl Jennifer (Holly Marie Combs `Charmed), who suffers from the same heart condition as Evans dear mum did. Evan only wants to save her, but his idea of life saving surgery is basically just ripping her heart out.

From this point on, the film turns into a race against time - who will get to Jennifer first? Her father? Her boyfriend Max (the late Glenn Quinn `Angel')? The police? Or will Evan perform his deadly surgery?

5 out of 5 stars Finally coming out on DVD!.......2007-07-20

I am so preordering this! I supplied a review on the original release's page, and I wanted to be the first to review here. This movie has the perfect mix of horror and comedy. I'm just so excited that it's finally getting a proper widescreen DVD release.

4 out of 5 stars A return to classic horror and in stunning HD.......2007-08-25

Although this title got some mixed reviews, it is actually pretty good for the horror fan. Unlike most recent movies (scream, etc.) this is not a teen-horror-comedy in any way. This is classic horror, ala Nightmare on Elm Street. I swear to god I'm afraid of seeing that old woman every time I walk past the bathroom at night. Its that scary. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously though, there are still some "No!! Don't go into the dark basement" parts, but its ok. It wouldn't be a real horror film without that type of stuff.

Overall the picture quality on the HD DVD is very good. Some of the scenes are simply breath taking. The cinematography is very good, especially the camera angles on establishing shots. A lot of the camera work and atmosphere reminded me of the Silent Hill movie. The sound is also very good. Although not perfect, there is really nothing to complain about in the picture and sound department.

Overall Id say this is the scariest movie I've seen in a while. Other recent horror movies such as Saw, Hostel, etc. were pure gore-fests and not really much horror. There are definitely a few parts in the movie I jumped and after the movie I had to turn all the lights on because I was still spooked. Just to be clear, this is still somewhat of a cheesy movie, but it is a fresh breather from all the horror-comedies and definitely one of the better horror flicks available in HD.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-08-08

This movie really captures the "old school" horror feel in a movie by creating the fictional ghost story of mary shaw. The HD-DVD has great qualtiy and the movie is fantastic for a good scare def go for the hd version of dead silence. It even has the standard dvd on the same disk so if your thinking about upgrading to hd-dvd in the future def pick this one up. the dvd features are its only weakness being that it is the same of the standard dvd but hey still they aren't bad. features being Exclusive alternate ending and alternate opening Deleted scenes , The making of dead silence ,Mary Shaw's Secrets ,Evolution of a visual fx and more. So if your looking for a good scare def check this one out in HD!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Horror Vibe and a great HD DVD purchase.......2007-08-08

having been a big fan of the horror genre for years I found this to be highly entertaining, having a throw back feel to old school horror movies, with not a lot of violence and a focus on creepy atmosphere and jump scares of old, if you have a problem looking at creepy puppets you might find this one hard to get through and thats exactly why I like it, IMO you cant go wrong with the guys who wrote and directed SAW.

the HD DVD itself is a combo, which, depending on your situation, might be good or bad, if you are like me and have a lot of friends and family that dont have HD DVD then its a good thing, if you dont care about the Standard side then its not a good thing....overall the picture quality is pretty good, probably a 4 out of 5 rating on that, not the best certainly, but still a very nice transfer, sound is definitely good, a lot of the movie is very quiet (hence the name Dead Silence) and the surround works really well when it needs to....

All in all a great movie and a great buy if you are any kind of horror fan, it might be a little generic for some, but to me its definitely not

2 out of 5 stars Save the money and purchase a cheaper version, and not the hd. Features also listed below.......2007-08-03

I own about 40 Hd-dvds now, when they first came up I was re-buying alot, now I tend to wait for something new that I don't own or I re-purchase it if I really liked it. I also figured prices of Hd-dvds would come down by now after the first year like dvds did but surprisingly they have not. As for dead silence the sound and picture are always good on Hd dvd, also horror films in general have good sound, however this one does not stand out.
Great horror films can get us to forget what makes sense and get us to accept it. They can also be realistic and terrifying and hone in on some hardwired fear we have. Horror films can also purposely be so bad there good. This really isn't any of the above. The scares are the equivalent of me hiding and jumping out at you. I think i guessed nearly everything that happened in the movie prior to it happening. Other random things i found annoying, why does Donnie Wahlberg's character use a electric shaver everywhere? , why do we have to have ominous fog around a cemetery, bit cliche. There are a lot of holes yet I don't lose myself in the movie and accept it. As for the plot amazon provides a good enough description, no need to add to it.
Yes, I have seen worse horror movies, and yes this is a break from the torture porn genre however there are other picks for 2007 out there. If you want to stay on the Hd dvd kick try The Host, again getting away from the torture porn, and one of the best reviewed films of the year getting a 92% positive rating on rottentomtoes out of 129 film critics whereas Dead silence got 17% positive out of 63 critics. Better yet The Shining is now available to pre order on Hd dvd being released on October 23rd. If you have a need to watch killer dolls, watch or re watch Child's Play.
My advice is if you like horror and you want to check out some new on dvd for 2007 just buy a cheaper version than the hd.

Dvd features from box
Exclusive alternate ending and alternate opening
Deleted scenes
The making of dead silence
Mary Shaw's Secrets

5 out of 5 stars 'Dead Silence' will not be what you hear watching with friends........2007-07-24

This is a real CREEPSHOW DELIGHT with lots of surprises in store. Extremely
well directed, and it keeps you thinking trying to figure what is going on. No teenybopper-slasher film, but something to be appreciated by 'Gourmets' of horror, and I used that word for a reason. Yes, there are some plot disconnects with everything not being linear-but that was on purpose and not the result of some bad directing. Crank up the microwave with some popcorn [TWO bags], sit back and just ENJOY! Good Horror Flicks are hard to find and this one is good, IN SPADES!
Rod Serling would love it were he still around, and he is counted among the masters in story telling.

The vampiric Stephen King tale returns to the small screen, 25 years after the first made-for-TV Salem's Lot, a Tobe Hooper-directed ratings hit. This time it's Rob Lowe as a successful writer who returns to his haunted hometown. As a kid, something awful happened to him in the spooky mansion on the hill; now that he's back, the mansion is once again buzzing with evil portents. The physical production (shot in Australia) is convincing, and it's fun to see old pros such as Donald Sutherland, Rutger Hauer, and James Cromwell cutting up in juicy roles. The storytelling, however, feels oddly disjointed, as though King's sprawl had been arbitrarily hacked away rather than adapted (a few big moments are bewilderingly left offscreen). The approach misses the basic assets of a vampire story: the disbelief, the lore, the sex appeal. Instead, it feels like a random collection of bits for short attention spans. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars "Dull, Mindless, Moronic Evil...".......2007-07-06

This is the movie that the original should have been. It is superior in every way including the cast, the acting, the screenplay, the score, the character development, and the cinematography. The original pales by comparison. The mini-series is also more true to the book; this is not necessary a good thing when it comes to adapting Stephen King's novels to the screen, but in this case it is.

This is a modern-day adaptation that works. In his books SK takes myths and legends and adapts them to our times. If SK had written this book in 2004, his characters would have been using cellphones and the internet. So why shouldn't they here?

Who cares if we don't see Ben Mears at his typewriter? Like all SK books this is a long story and the producers had to pick what to include and what not to. Otherwise, this movie would have been criticised for being bloated, boring, and too long. They chose well. I have watched this movie at least 20 times and I am still seeing new things.

All of the characters in this film are more believable than those in the original. David Soul just wasn't convincing. I couldn't buy that he cared about the Marsten House. Not so with Rob Lowe. Rob Lowe's narration from his hospital bed, with flashbacks to him there, works well. "Hail Mary full of grace, help me win this stock car race..." Rob Lowe's Ben Mears is sympathetic.

Where were Dud Rodgers and Ruth Crocket, the school bus driver, or Sandy and Royce McDougall and their baby in the original? These are high-profile characters in the book that were important to the story yet were completely omitted in the 1979 version.

In addition to being better-developed, nearly all of the characters in the mini-series are more likeable and dignified. The boarding house woman in the original looks like a barfly and the sheriff comes across as a dumb country bumpkin. The teacher in the original was just a frail old man with gray hair who had little to offer.

This film's Barlow is also better, much more convincing than that 10-foot tall space alien thing in the original which was laughable.

This movie has some truly macabre and scary moments. The vampire that slithered through a narrow vent to reach his victim, breaking his bones in the process. The creatures who climbed walls and crawled upside-down on ceilings. Ben Mears' encounter with Susan at the end of the movie--this last part was left out entirely from the original except for a split second when David Soul turned to the house before setting it on fire and said, "Sorry Susan." That can't compare to the encounter between this Ben Mears and Susan Norton at the end of this movie--it is beautiful and heartbreaking. Dud Rodgers' isolation and destitution in the junkyard at night, making him vulnerable to the monster. Matt Burke's reaction when he walks into his upstairs room and sees Mike Ryerson standing in front of him--the acting is brilliant, I have never seen shock and horror conveyed so well by any actor. Ben Mears' confrontation with Barlow at the end when Barlow taunts him and Ben drives the stake through Barlow, destroying both the monster as well as the vampire within himself.

My only criticism of the movie is at the very end when it looks like Michael Jackson's Thriller video with the monster mob shuffling through the streets. That scene should have been left out, but that is a minor thing.

This is not the best horror movie I have ever seen and it may not even be the best SK mini-series that has ever been made, but it comes close. The original was not a bad movie, but it cannot hold a candle to this one.

5 out of 5 stars What's the fuzz about? This is the one true version!.......2007-06-22

Most of the critics here compare this mini-series to the first movie adaption of 1979 and not to the book. And I guess most of them knew the 1979 before they read the book (if at all), and they did it as boys or girls, being scared and thrilled and loving it ever since. If it was the other way round - reading the book first and then watching the two movies (without the fond memories of thirty years inbetween) - the contest wouldn't even be close: This is by far the more faithful adaption of the original story.

Most critics keep coming up with totally irrelevant details: So Straker isn't bold anymore. Who cares? So Matt Burke is an African American and gay. What's the problem there? I find it pretty annoying that most of the detractors here are complaining about this. It's the 21st century, for christ's sake! True, King didn't put any minorities in the book, but this was the 70s, and I'm quite sure he would today.

King had a whole book to develop characters and relationships. This movie only has three hours. So to speed up character development they gave them back stories that weren't originally there: Ben was in Afghanistan, Burke is gay, the doctor had a crush on Sandy, etc. etc. It is all in sinc with the feel of the mood of the original story. This is movie making 101, actually.

And then Barlow. What an improvement on the first version! I mean, James Mason was a fine Straker in 1979, and Donald Sutherland is slightly overacting here. But coming from the book's Barlow I was sorely disappointed to find that Tobe Hooper had turned him into a blue skinned caricature of Max Schreck. Here we have Rutger Hauer - who was born to play King's seductive and charming villain. Again, the choice isn't even close.

So, if you don't mind having black and gay characters in your story and if you love the book, especially its non-horror aspects, this is the movie for you. Of course, you can always turn to a wooden 70s monster flick, if you like. But don't pretend it has anything to do with Stephen King.

3 out of 5 stars Good But not Great.......2007-05-12

Good movie, but not nearly as good as the origional. Barlow is a jolk in this film compared to the amazing Barlow from the Tobe Hooper film, plus the Toby Hooper Salem's Lot is so much more scarier and has so many more horror elements contained within it, even the skull in the moon at the end with the burning house is so spooky. This film however did have good parts to it and was explained in more detail but it is not nearly as spooky as it should have been, too much explaining and not enough development. Over all 3/10 worth watching but not nearly as amazing as the origional which is a 10/10 spook fest.

1 out of 5 stars SUCKS.......2007-04-26

Garbage. They tweaked it in every place that didn't need tweaking. Straker is no longer bald, Matt Burke is no longer caucasion, and now he's gay. The bus driver is now a vietnam vet instead of korea. In this adaptation, Ben Mears was the kid who found the bodies of Hubie Marsten and his wife. The story begins in winter instead of late summer. Ralphie Glick doesn't just go missing, he's drowned in an icey pond. Instead of Ben Mears coming to town and finding the Marsten house already sold, Crockett has already promised it to Mears, but now he's renegged and sold it out from under him. I don't see the point. They didn't just change the story, they didn't leave anything intact. It's bad. It's unwatchable, especially if you loved the book. None of the characters have Maine accents... Hmm. Could it have been filmed in... oh I dunno... AUSTRALIA PERHAPS??

3 out of 5 stars Not great, but not totally bad, either!!!!!.......2007-03-23

I remember trying to watch the newer television version of Salem's Lot when it was first on TNT a few years ago, but it just didn't grab me at the time. I hate watching a mini-series on television that has a ton of commercials. Also, the little bit that I saw of the show didn't appear to be any more chilling or scary than the original version had been. For some strange reason, television and Stephen King simply don't mix very well. Almost everything by King that's been done for television has turned out to be rather mediocre at best. Some of it has been downright awful. That's not to say that I don't own the DVDs of The Stand and The Shining and Nightmares & Dreamscapes. I do. It's just that I seldom watch them, except for maybe "Battleground" in the Nightmares & Dreamscapes series. That was an EXCELLENT adaptation of a Stephen King story. The best that's ever been done for television. I wish the rest of King's stuff that's been done for television was just as good as "Battleground," but it isn't. Which brings me back to Salem's Lot. I found a good price on the DVD and decided to give the movie another chance, but without the commercials. I'm glad I did. Though the mini-series still had its share of problems, I certainly enjoyed it more this time around. Rob Lowe takes over the role of Ben Mears from David Soul, playing a writer who returns to his small hometown to write a book about evil and ends up having to fight it tooth and nail. Rutger Hauer plays the vampire, Barlow, and Donald Sutherland plays his assistant, Straker. Both of them take over the evil Marsten House that overlooks the town of Jerusalem's Lot, and it isn't long before people start disappearing. Andre Braugher and Samantha Mathis play Ben's friends and accomplices in fighting the vampires. James Cromwell plays Father Callahan, the priest who lacks the faith to destroy the evil that's taking over his town. It's been so long since I read the novel that I unable to tell just how well the newer television version actually holds up. I will say that it's difficult to find someone to root for. None of the characters appear to be very likable. Still, the special effects are well done, and both Sutherland and Hauer steal the show with their over the top performances. It's easy to see that both men were enjoying themselves and hamming it up to a certain degree. Rob Lowe does a good job with his character, but David Soul was infinitely a more likable actor in the original series. I liked it that one of the search dogs in the movie was named Cujo, though he wasn't a St. Bernard. The movie runs three hours in length, and the last third is by far the best part, though there is one scene in the middle where a vampire in a jail cell squeezes into a tiny air vent in an attempt to get to Lowe, who's in a cell that's further down the corridor. That was a cool effect! While not a 5-star film, Salem's Lot is definitely not a 1-star movie, either. I am happy that I now have it for my "Stephen King" film library. Last, the DVD doesn't have any extras on it. It would've been nice if there had been an interview with Stephen King and maybe some of the cast and crew, explaining why Salem's Lot was being remade and what they hoped to accomplish with the newer version. No such luck. It's like everyone took the money and ran!!!
