Not Worth the Price.......2007-09-14
I remember this show from my younger years, and loved it. However, I have a problem with the way the DVD Release is being handled. 12 discs for 7 episodes? Do we really care for or need an extensive documentary for each episode.? And for $75? At this rate, it will cost over two hundred dollars to own the show. No thanks.
Very good series.......2007-08-31
I enjoyed this series when it was on TV and I'm eagerly looking forward to the DVD set coming out.
The Young Indiana Jones series is about the coming-of-age of the Indiana Jones character from the Indiana Jones movies.
The TV series is both fun and educational. I definitely recommend it.
A Fantastic Series.......2007-08-30
This was a great series, and I've long hoped for its dvd release. Though overpriced at the moment, at least it's available, so I'll keep an eye out for the eventual (inevitable) complete series box set. In the meantime, there's always the local rental place.
Young Indie was my favorite show when it originally aired, and I've retained very fond memories of it ever since. It's nice to see that, though the amount of documentaries included here borders on the absurd, it is getting a full treatment and is not just some rush-job release-it-and-forget-it package that often happens with long-discontinued series.
Young Indiana Jones episodes are filled with all the action, humor, and intelligence you could hope for, and, best of all, (cheezy and clichéd as this is to say) it really is fun for all ages.
Young Indy Returns .......2007-08-29
The Young Indiana Jones adventures come to DVD. Agreed I wish it was cheaper but then consider you are dealing with Paramount that charges over $100 per season for any of the Star Trek series. Considering that each episode is an hour and a half movie in itself and this does not seem quite so unreasonable. Furthermore it includes alot of extras whether you want them or not. I grant you I would like to see a 7 disk edition of just the episodes for a substancial savings. Personally I'm just thrilled to finally see them come to DVD. I am sure if you're patient you can probably get a package deal once all the volumes are released. The first 12-disc set includes seven feature-length episodes as well as 38 in-depth companion documentaries, an historical overview, an interactive game and an interactive timeline. The series was shot in 35 countries and showed key figures in the coming of age of the modern world. The interviews include celebrities like Gen. Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger, Gloria Steinem, Martin Scorsese, Barbara Boxer, James Earl Jones, Hal David, and Deepak Chopra.
This volume includes the episodes:
My First Adventure - Indy and T.E. Lawrence solve a murder mystery in Egypt.
Passion For Life - Indy goes on safari in Kenya with Teddy Roosevelt.
The Perils of Cupid - Indy falls in love with the daughter of Duke Franz Ferdinand in Vienna, Austria.
Travels with Father - Indy joins up with Leo Tolstoy after an argument with his father while visiting Russia.
Journey of Radiance - Indy visits the Holy City Benares in the Far East and meets Jiddu Krishnamurti.
Spring Break Adventure - Indy meets Thomas Edison and tries to avoid German spies.
Love's Sweet Song - Indy ends up in Ireland right before the Easter Rebellion mixed up with the resistance and he meets Winston Churchill.
The second volume is to be released December 2007 and the third volume in the Spring of 2008. If you shop around I think you will find Amazon has the best Pre-order price so far. The suggested retail being advertised several places is over $100. So I'm ordering mine here and now. This set is great family entertainment. It may not always have as much excitement and comedy as the Jone's movies, but it makes up for it in other ways including good drama, history, and locations. I highly recomend this set.
OUCH!.......2007-08-29
I remember this show very fondly, and would give the show 5 stars based on the content. But OUCH on the price, even at the discounted Amazon price! $75 for 12 episodes -- $6 per episode! SUPER OUCH! I wish the producers would not be so greedy.... I'll have to wait till its about $30, like other shows, or wait till the downloads are available. To the producers: you sell more, and make more, when the price is more reasonable.......

As with Star Wars, the George Lucas-produced Indiana Jones trilogy was not just a plaything for kids but an act of nostalgic affection toward a lost phenomenon: the cliffhanging movie serials of the past. Episodic in structure and with fate hanging in the balance about every 10 minutes, the Jones features tapped into Lucas's extremely profitable Star Wars formula of modernizing the look and feel of an old, but popular, story model. Steven Spielberg directed all three films, which are set in the late 1930s and early '40s: the comic book-like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the spooky, Gunga Din-inspired Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the cautious but entertaining Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Fans and critics disagree over the order of preference, some even finding the middle movie nearly repugnant in its violence. (Pro-Temple of Doom people, on the other hand, believe that film to be the most disarmingly creative and emotionally effective of the trio.) One thing's for sure: Harrison Ford's swaggering, two-fisted, self-effacing performance worked like a charm, and the art of cracking bullwhips was probably never quite the iconic activity it soon became after Raiders. Supporting players and costars were very much a part of the series, too--Karen Allen, Sean Connery (as Indie's dad), Kate Capshaw, Ke Huy Quan, Amrish Puri, Denholm Elliot, River Phoenix, and John Rhys-Davies among them. Years have passed since the last film (another is supposedly in the works), but emerging film buffs can have the same fun their predecessors did picking out numerous references to Hollywood classics and B-movies of the past. --Tom Keogh

A Set of Classic Movies, an Important Addition to Your Video Library.......2007-08-31
What could be better than a set of all three Indiana Jones movies? Each is exciting in its own way. Some people like the first movies the best; others like the second with the trip to China and the famous dinner scene; others like the third movie where Sean Connery plays the father of Indiana Jones.
I understand that a fourth Indiana Jones movies is in the works, and look forward to seeing it.

I liked them when they came out years ago, and I like them now. What's not to like?

Not great, but still a good family movie.......2007-09-10
Evan Almighty is a big summer comedy with a big budget and so it must be judge by summer blockbuster standards. It obviously didn't make as much money as its producers hoped, and the movie does have a lot of shortcomings, BUT I thought it was a delightful comedy that is just perfect for familes looking for wholesome entertainment. Evan Almighty is a sequel to Bruce Almighty. In Bruce Almighty, Jim Carrey was the star. He made the movie great. He was given the powers of God and hilarity ensued. Evan, played by Steve Carrell, had a small but funny part in that movie. Carrell, now a major star in his own right, headlines this movie. In Evan Almighty, Evan doesn't get to play God. Instead, he gets to play Moses.
God, Morgan Freeman returning as the amiable God as a man, appears to Evan and tells him to build an Ark because a flood is coming. This is a problem because Evan has just been elected to Congress. As a freshman Congress, Evan has a lot of pressure to uphold his campaign promise to "change the world." Of course, God has other ideas. You've probably seen it in the commercials. No matter what Evan does, animals keep following him and his beard keeps growing. Eventually Evan gives in and builds the arc.
Aware of the history behind the movie, I really enjoyed it. While not as good as its predecessor, this movie still has a strong Christian theme and should be enjoyed by all but the most cynical. The cast is for the most part decent. Wanda Sykes is hilarious as Carrell's assistant. Jonah HIll plays a congressional aide without using any swear words. John Goodman plays the evil congressman in the movie (don't expect a civics lesson, this movie plays fast and loose with how the Congress works). Lauren Graham plays the beautiful, suffering wife.
The whole family should enjoy this movie. It doesn't have the wide-ranging appeal of the original, but is still a lot of fun.
Evan Almighty put a delightful twist into established biblical scripture..........2007-09-08
With Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston both declining to reprise their roles for the sequel to Bruce Almighty. Returning Director Tom Shadyac goes in a different direction by paired up Steve Carell (The 40 Year Old Virgin) with Morgan Freeman. (Both Freeman and Carell are reprising their roles from Bruce Almighty).
Evan Almighty put a delightful twist into established biblical scripture. It was also good to see Shadyac remain true to scripture (With God (Freeman) holding true to his promise never to flood the world again) but at the same time, he allows his audience the opportunity to expand their personal views on the concepts of prayer and making a difference in the lives of others.
God (Freeman) mentioned the following:
"If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings, or does he give them opportunities to love each other?"
Lastly, Evan's ARK does play a significant role, other than being the film's signature vessel. A-R-K is the acronym for a single Act of Random Kindness...which is the first step that one must take in order to make a difference in the lives of others.
Delightful Family Film.......2007-09-05
I saw this film with 5 of my friends from varying religious backgrounds and we all loved it! I was worried that it would be shallow and stupid, but, it surprised me with it's warmth. I especially loved the message at the end of the film. The special effects were top-notch and I laughed and found the message of "It's the little things that count" spot on especially in today's world where money and "things" have replaced love and video games "raise children" that are jaded and used to violence by the time they are 11. Evan Almighty "gets it." I wish there were more films like this one.
Great Family Movie!!.......2007-09-03
I loved this movie, too often there is so much sex or violence that you have nothing to take your kids to that is just fun. People who think it is boring are jaded because no one gets murdered and there is no violence.
I'm in my 50's and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so it's not just for families with children.
Nonsense.......2007-08-31
Let's see... what will you get when you see this movie? Pretty basic gags, some minor sexual double sense jokes, corny dialogs, all messed up (mashed up) with biblical stuff, which I don't think is wrong but here is forced to the limit of incredulous.
I'd only recommend this movie only if you want to spare some time and don't have anything more important to do. Forgettable.

Evan's Ark.......2007-09-09
It's hard enough being a rookie congressman with a campaign promise to change the world, but when God himself shows up before you even settle in and commands you to build a really big boat in the middle of a Virginia housing development; well that takes it to a whole new level.
Like George Burns before him, Morgan Freeman has a hard time convincing his chosen one to do as he's told, and it takes a boat load of divine intervention to make Congressman Baxter (Steve Carrell) trade in his power suits for sackcloth and get started measuring cubits.
Amidst the ensuing shenanigans and slapstick, I'm pretty sure he may have been humming the tune of "Fixing a Hole" by the Beatles, and muttering something like:
I'm building an ark ere the rain gets in
Can't keep my mind from wondering
Where it will go
I'm hauling the planks that make up the floor
To keep my mind from wondering
Where it will go
And when finally the work was over, he may have been saying to himself:
I'm filling my ark in the biblical way
And when the sky is thundering
There will I go
And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong
I'm right where I belong
I'm right where I belong
Silly people run around
They laugh at me and always ask me
When the rain will start to pour
Kids will probably like this movie, and if you're an adult who can appreciate the miracle of CGI you may like it too. Funny in places, overdone in others, but with a message for taking the time for a number of things that weren't important yesterday.

*1/2 = Evan Not 2 Almighty.......2007-09-08
I would like to say that Steve Carell is one the funniest men in America ever to hit the silver screen. So, when hearing about a sequel to a Jim Carrey movie for his own, I was very impressed with a movie like "Evan Almighty." But whatever the whether, I didn't think it could be appealing to critics, because unfortunately, there is no Jim Carrey in it.
I have to say that "Bruce Almighty" is my favorite comedy with Jim Carrey. Now, we're 4 years away from the year 2003, when it was released, and now, instead of Jim Carrey being the star, we got Steve Carrell instead. It's because Jim Carrey doesn't like doing the same roles twice, but he should give it a shot, though. I bet it wouldn't be that bad.
"Evan Almighty" opens up with Evan Baxter (Steve Carrell) alongside with his partner, Susan Ortega on the news hereby congratulating Evan Baxter for being Congressmen of Washington D.C. He was done being a newsman in Buffalo, NY and went from newsman to Congressman. In the second shot, we are seen with Evan, his wife, Joan (Lauren Graham) and his 3 kids, Dylan, Jordan and Ryan (Johnny Simmons, Graham Phillips and Jimmy Bennett).
On the first night when the whole family are in Washington D.C, after Evan hears that his 3 kids prayed to God, Evan prays to God by himself. But as soon God (Morgan Freeman) appears under his skin, instead of giving Evan almighty powers, like he gave Bruce in the first film, he tells Evan Baxter to build an ark, because a flood is coming. (The good message to this movie is that everyone should do an act of random kindness. And that's a good thing, and that's what Evan Baxter learns on in this story.)
God is right that there's a flood. It's a flood of a corney, unrealistic plot and quirky characters. Well, at least the kids shake up a bit as Evan's sons. However, they are one of the best parts in acting for this movie. Steve Carrell does shine again as Evan Baxter only in his own movie. But keep in mind, this is not Bruce Nolan's movie. In fact, he doesn't have anything to do in this movie.
But however one piece of acting that is totally not new is Morgan Freeman as God. And yet, Morgan Freeman is a very good actor. He does shine a little as God. He's a good part of the movie industry.
However, I couldn't manage to get through most of the corney dialogue throughout the movie. It's totally unpredictable and unbelievable to me. How could you just manage one corney dialogue, two corney pieces of dialogue at the same time. Could director Tom Shadyac every take his down-town directing and give the actors their down-town acting for one chance?
Overall, should I manage to look at a movie like Steve Carrell's "Evan Almighty?" For the most part, sorta, but maybe. "Evan Almighty" tries and tries to be like "Bruce Almighty," but it ultimately fails. Apparently, I'm sure the Almighty series should be done now. Too bad that Jim Carrey doesn't want to do too many sequels of the same character.
One of the worst movies ever made!.......2007-09-04
I am a HUGE steve carell fan and was really looking forward to what i was sure was going to be a hilarious adition to his already great career. Movies like Anchorman, 40 year old virgin and little miss sunshine demonstrated how talented steve carell is in both the comedy and drama genre, but clearly he made a mistake in chosing this film. First of all the movie has not one funny moment in the entire film, even Steve's unique comedy style could not save this film's pourly written script and lame dialogue. Secondly the storyline makes no sense, and has so many horrible plot problems that it makes you angry just watching it. And thirdly the most annoying black woman of all time (Wanda Sykes) is so annoying that she makes you want gouge out your own eyes and especially your ears with word that she utters. This movie really has no redeaming features and deserves 0 out 5 stars, lets hope that steve's next project the remake of get smart hits the mark - as this movie in one word is terrible.

If you're in the mood to watch sassy commentary, hardcore melodrama, and extreme dating, Noah's Arc will satisfy. Eight juicy episodes comprise The Complete Second Season. A heightened sense of action in the linked narratives, not only in the sexual sense, taps in to the old-school soap opera model, leaving the viewer jonesing to find out what will happen next. Stories center around five tight-knit buddies, Noah, Chance, Alex, Ricky, and Trey, but so many boyfriends come and go that it's tricky to even keep up with who's who in this handsome world. The men take everything, including themselves, way too seriously, but that's part of the fun. Most notably in The Second Season, Noah's ex, Wade, hovers in the background as Noah attempts to fall in love with gentlemanly Malik in "Housequake," the rapper Baby Gat in "Give It Up," and with politically astute Quincy in episodes six and seven. Dating galore amongst all the men leaves the viewer reeling, but each episode also tackles more serious issues in the gay community, like when Noah gets brutally beaten in "Baby, Can I Hold You?" or when Ricky braves dating an HIV-positive beau. Humor levels stay high with queen Alex's undying flair, while college professor, Chance, and his boyfriend, Eddie, hold down the fort in a more understated way. Corny, dramatic, funny, ridiculous, and touching all at once, this second season of Noah's Arc contains enough surprise to keep viewers riveted until the last microsecond of the season's finale. "What's the T??".......2007-08-23
I saw season one last year on logo when I lived in America and I have been eagerly anticipating this season's arrival. The show is good for all kinds of adults, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or straight. The show is severely underrated.
GENERATIONAL GAP.......2007-08-16
Having fallen in love with season one of "Noah's Arc" and with its characters, I eagerly purchased season two of the series. As I viewed season two, I became keenly aware of my own generational gap with the show. The actors that played the characters of the show were still very appealing; however, I no longer gave a "fig" about the characters that they were portraying. To me, the producers had put fourth a sincere effort to make the show more hip and appealing to the younger crowd. Thus, I felt very "let down" with my "love affair" turning kind of sour. Oh well, I guess love is not always easy. I'll truly miss this show!
Noah's Arc.......2007-08-10
I was hoping to like season 2 `Noah's Arc' a little more than the first. Sadly, I have to report that this show only works on one level and that is on how hot most of the cast is. Once you get past the attractive looking cast there is very little to recommend this show. The acting and writing lurch all over the place, at times it resembles a poorly written episode of `Saved by the Bell'. Wilson Cruz does his best with this material and actually manages some genuine emotion. He is poorly under used by the show and Hollywood.
It's worth buying as African Americans are starved of this type of material, but don't be fooled, we deserve better than this...Don't we?
Dish, Tea, Whatever!!.......2007-07-23
Yes, it is over the top in some scenes, but Noah's Arc is one of the most enjoyable, funny, touching series dealing with men of color! I find myself at times laughing histerically and hitting the rewind button to experience it all over again. They do touch on serious topics of today's society, but manages to keep it light so as not to get too preachy. I can't wait for season three!!
Noah's Arc delivers the goods again!..........2007-07-17
I didn't think Noah's Arc could improve from the first season, but, they did!...Great comedic timing and emotional plots elevates this [second] season wanting more from these guys. Great guest stars like Keith Hamilton Cobb and Victoria Rowell add to the cast as if they've been there all along. [Brilliant comedic performance from Jason Steed] who lights-up the screen with clever british banter and sexy bravado. Jason will leave you wanting more. [Chance and Eddie's] little girl is adorable and acts with such integrity, I fell in love with this adorable little girl and so will you.
The sets and locations are better. They filmed this season in Vancouver, British Columbia and it shows. Great outside shots and beautiful vistas ground this season. Numerous topics packed into this season give you reasons to reflect on what's happening in the community and makes you want to [discuss] these views with your friends. The special features and commentaries of episodes from creator and stars, give you intimate details of what was going on while they taped scenes, not to be missed. You won't be disappointed with this new season. O, and yeah!...[beefcake] so tender you can cut it with your fingers..LOL!..

Product Description
Chris Cole (MARK WAHLBERG) was born to rock. His longtime girlfriend Emily (JENNIFER ANISTON) believes Chris's talent could take him all the way - but instead of writing his own music, Chris worships at the altar of Bobby Beers, the fiery frontman for Steel Dragon, the heavy metal rock legends that both inspire and consume his life. By day, Chris still lives at home with his parents and spends his days repairing copy machines, push-starting his sputtering Dodge Dart and fighting with his brother. But when Chris takes the stage, all of that disappears. When he's fronting Blood Pollution, Pennsylvania's premiere Steel Dragon tribute band, Chris Cole is Bobby Beers - mesmerizing audiences with his perfect imitation of Beers' electrifying vocals and sexy snarl. Blood Pollution's low-rent recreation of the Dragon's elaborate arena shows drive the locals (including Chris's loving parents and amused choir director) into a head-banging, hair-whipping frenzy. The night his bandmates boot him out of the group he founded, Chris is devastated - until an unexpected phone call changes his life forever: he, Chris Cole, has been tapped to replace Bobby Beers as the lead singer of Steel Dragon. In an instant, Chris rockets to the dizzying heights of sudden stardom, rising from devotee to icon, from the ultimate rock fan to the ultimate rock god - the wanna-be who got to be. So what happens when an average guy gets everything he wants... and discovers it's not enough?

If you've ever indulged a rock & roll fantasy, Rock Star will give you the vicarious thrill of seeing that fantasy come to life. That's what happens when talented tribute-band singer Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) is tapped to replace his idol as frontman for 1980s metal gods Steel Dragon. Chris becomes the groupie-laden "Izzy," his manager girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston) grows weary of sex 'n' drugs on tour, and Rock Star plays out its utterly conventional plot line. Despite the casting of real rockers to support Wahlberg's underrated performance (nicely matched by Aniston and Timothy Spall as Steel Dragon's road manager), his character is too rigidly written to follow an obligatory rise and fall, and even its basis in fact (inspired by Tim "Ripper" Owens's recruitment into Judas Priest) can't conceal the movie's predictable formula. As a cautionary tale it's routine, but as a leather-pants love story, Rock Star's got enough good karma to keep its dream alive. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Rock on! .......2007-05-09
I had a good time watching this movie. It's entertaining and one that you can watch more than once and still enjoy. Rock Star also had a great cast to help keep both the action and the melodrama on an even keel.
love the rock and roll music.......2007-03-18
the movie proves that everyone has a dream, and some day it will bw achieved thru hard work.
Pretty Good Rock Movie for the Hair Era.......2007-02-16
This at least glosses over many elements of rock stardom and in some instances, the acting and situations are pulled off very well. The hero worship, incredible fan dedication, sex, drugs, sex, alcohol, sex, heartbreak, band breakups, life on the road, sex, drugs, hair, leather, backstage passes (which lead to more sex and drugs) are covered pretty well. Fun flick!
AWESOME 80'S MOVIE TRIBUTE!! but kind of touching!!!!.......2006-11-30
I though that this movie would be cool as Detroit Rock City or Dazed and Confused but is not! Rock Star is not exacly a "rock movie tribute for the past deacades" like Detroit Rock City, this is more like a dramatic story of a rocker fan in the 80's.
But DON'T GET ME WRONG! this movie is COOL!! The main character in the story hang out with the band, gettin wasted, going with groupies, lisening to rock, flashing devil horn signs and teaching his little bother how to be a HEAVY METAL FAN!
The Cons are: Most of the soundtracks were not taken from true 80's rock bands, they were made by this fictional band with fictional songs called Dragon Steel. The movie have some touching moments that spoil the fun, there were no comments about 80's rock bands, the movie wasn't that funny and the ending was kind of predictable.
P.S: Is worth buying it, but if you are looking for cool funny rocking movies of past decades then this is not for you.
ADIOS.
"Gimme blood Pollutions"...this movie will make metal heads "Stand up and Shout".......2006-10-28
This movie was a suprise when it came out, not highly publisized, but a good cast in Jennifer Aniston and Mark Wahlberg. This takes place in the mid/late 1980's where Wahlberg plays a early 20's frontman to a tribute band to "steel dragons", a 70's super-metal group with erie similarities to Judas Priest, although the creators deny any tie ins. He lives at home with his parents still and is trying to "make it big" on someone elses music, and they do a good job. Low and behold he is handed the dream of a lifetime when Steel Dragon decides to get rid of their legendary frontman and starts a search for his replacement...which ends at Wahlbergs door. From here we follow his character, now known as "Izzy" to his public through through his Dream. No real suprises in this movie as far a story line (especially if you know the Judas priest story), and no acadamy awards for acting, but some good humor and Entertaining, with a Killer soundtrack. Steel Dragons is made up of, and played in the movie by, real life rock stars Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne,Black Label society), Jason Bohnam (son of Jon Bohnam of Zepplin, and Bohnam), Jeff Pilson (Dokken), Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmstein group), Nick Catonese (Black label society), Mike Matijevic (steelheart). Just an overall good movie, great music, and entertaining, especially if you are in to metal. Check it out.

The connection and interdependence between yoga and belly dance are explored in Tribal Fusion, a reasonably comprehensive and intense program drawing on both disciplines and demonstrated by the remarkable Rachel Brice. Practices of three different lengths (15, 30, and about 40 minutes) are offered; elements in the shorter practices are repeated and expanded on in the longer ones. The yoga portions include some basic sun salutations, lunges, backbends (specifically the locust pose), and such; the more extensive belly dancing exercises and undulations focus on the hips, the chest, and shoulders. Brice's instructions are efficient, if sometimes a bit on the brisk side (it's one thing to exhort students to practice ujjayi pranayama, the deep, audible nostril breathing style used in yoga; it's quite another to do so without even saying what it is, let alone showing how it's done). Whether or not any of the female users for which this DVD is intended will be able to replicate Brice's belly dancing moves is open to question, as her technique and amazingly toned body make things look easy when, in fact, mere mortals may find them baffling, to say the least. Moreover, although Carolena Nericcio, one of Brice's mentors and the "hostess" of this program, stresses that "the main attraction (of belly dancing) is delight," Brice doesn't seem to be having much fun, never so much as cracking a smile. Little matter. When you're this good, there's no need to kid around. --Sam Graham
Description
Bellydance Superstar Rachel Brice teaches basic tools that can be incorporated into daily practice that will bring flexibility, strength and, if practiced regularly, effortlessness into whatever Belly Dance style you choose. Instruction includes a short Yoga practice to warm up and strengthen the body as well as a final chapter on Yoga for flexibility."
Customer Reviews:
A little too Goth for me.......2007-09-12
This video was rather Goth and the moves and drills didn't really feel like bellydance to me.
Great for beginners and pros alike!.......2007-09-10
I love the way the moves are broken down piece by piece. Very easy to follow!
Not what I thought.......2007-09-06
I bought this DVD and I wasn't very impressed. I was excited for a mix of yoga and bellydance because I haven't done any bellydance before. The drills were good and I could feel them working muscles, but I didnt like the format of the it. There were breaks with the titles between each move, which is educational, but interrupts the flow of the DVD. Its a good DVD if you just want to learn and practice basic movements, but it left me wanting more. Maybe I just need to try the other DVDs to get combinations and stuff.
Tribal Fusion.......2007-08-31
Love it! It is so broken down. The music helps with each section of movement.
I happen to like the fact she isn't smiling unlike a different opinion I read earlier. It adds to the aura of this type of bellydancing. It's the movement of the body we are to be enjoying. Can't wait for Octobers issue to come out! Already pre-ordered it.
Not at all what I was expecting (wanting).......2007-08-23
I think this dvd is fine for basic workout purposes. But I thought it would be a bit more challenging, and the 'performance' bit was especially disappointing.

Russian master Alexander Sokurov has tapped into the very flow of history itself for this flabbergasting film. Thanks to the miracles of digital video, Sokurov (and cinematographer Tilman Buttner) uses a single, unbroken, 90-minute shot to wind his way through the Hermitage in St. Petersburg--the repository of Russian art and the former home to royalty. Gliding through time, we glimpse Catherine II, modern-day museumgoers, and the doomed family of Nicholas II. History collapses on itself, as the opulence of the past and the horrors of the 20th century collide, and each door that opens onto yet another breathtaking gallery is another century to be heard from. The movie climaxes with a grand ball and thousands of extras, prompting thoughts of just how crazy Sokurov had to be to try a technical challenge like this--and how far a distance we've traveled, both physically and spiritually, since the movie began. --Robert Horton
Description
A modern filmmaker magically finds himself transported to the 18th century, where he embarks on a time-traveling journey through 300 years of Russian history in Alexander Sokurov's masterpiece. Filmed in HD with directors commentary
Customer Reviews:
Not for Everybody.......2007-09-17
I love this movie but I do realize it's not for everybody. In a single long take we travel trough Russian history in the great Russian Art museum, The Hermitage. The Hermitage is incredible, the art is great and the sense of Russian History as seen through art throughout the ages is unique. This is more documentary than a movie with a plot so it's not really for everybody. If you love History and Art and want to see a unique presentation of the subject matter than this movie is for you. The extras on the DVD are pretty interesting as well since the director takes you behind the scenes showing all the problems involved with doing a single 90 minute take through the huge cavernous halls of the Hermitage.
Visually dazzling, mentally confusing.......2007-08-15
"So who do you think the European guy was supposed to be?" is what you may be asking yourself after seeing this impressive movie. For the record, I think he either represents Europe's somewhat condescending view of Russia, or he represents Russia's own feelings of inadequecy compared to the rest of Europe. Or maybe neither. Or both. It's that kind of film.
You already know what this movie is. One continuous, non-stop shot going through the Hermitage in St Petersburg. Obstensibly it explores three hundred or so years of Russian history. What it really does is showcase Russian art and culture.
The movie's visuals are impressive, and the art of course, including the costumes, is amazing. Less impressive is the diagloge, which is repetitive and at times confusing. I'd like to think if I understood Russian, the dialogue would make more sense. Sadly, I think I'd need to understand Gibberish.
Still, despite that minor issue (which keeps the film from getting five stars), I enjoyed this movie. Any fan of art, culture, Russian history or just interesting cinematic technique is likely to feel the same.
Absolutely Fantastic!!!.......2007-08-05
This movie may not be well know in the USA, and that's a shame, since it is a jewel! I've seen it at least 3 times, and each time I notice something new. I was aware that Russian directors such as Andrei Tarkovsky, in his film Andrei Rublev, use very long camera takes, which allow the viewer to become absorbed into the film. This is much different from Hollywood movies and TV shows/sitcoms where each production is cut into countless short segments, resulting in a mishmash of pasted-together scenes, and scenes within scenes.... you get the picture. Sokurov's Russian Ark takes Tarkovsky's genious a step further, and this film is a miraculous single take that's over 90 minutes long. Perhaps many people don't have the attention span to view this film without going to the frig, but it is quite easy to watch without interruption, and the viewer's attention span is improved (treated) after seeing this movie just once!! You learn to love the European who leads you through the Hermitage museum and through 300 years of Russian history. He is a tall, lean "ghost-like" figure who talks with the narrator of the film (the director Sokurov himself) and who interacts with paintings and sculptures and people/living ghosts from different epocs of Russian history. Truly magical, mystical, timeless, and certainly grandiose in scale. Highly recommended for viewing more than just once. It's epic!!
Metaphors of Time and Place.......2007-08-02
Every mention of Russian Ark dwells on the cinematic breakthrough of the single-shot feature film. But many aspects of the film make it different from anything else on the DVD shelf. Unlike most offerings, this isn't a story with a plot line, characters, and dialogue that go from point A to B. It's more of an immersive experience that places you as the viewpoint sweeping through vistas in Petersburg's Hermitage Museum.
The motion in Russian Ark is fluid, a flow of images that takes you through a tour of time and place, leaving you with a vague awareness of foregone days. The scenes are dressed in extravagant period costumes in majestic, vaulted spaces. Some of the images seem metaphorical, as is the title, of European cultures preserved beyond regimes and alluded-to invasions, a brief time capsule containing centuries of lives and experiences.
You feel like a voyeur, but one who has sparse context to frame the scenes. Much of the dialogue seems incidental, overheard, and with few exceptions not vital to understanding any overarching plot movement. If you treat it as a taste of a foreign culture, don't stress over understanding what's going on, just relax and enjoy the experience.
A Frenchman walks into the Hermitage Museum. History suffers, as does the audience........2007-07-24
He may nominally be a Frenchman, but the character of the "stranger" is actually a perfect likeness of the aging, no-longer-relevant Soviet dissident intellectual. He speaks in statements and accusations, ignoring or interrupting his interlocutor. His voice is always much too loud, straining, half-yelling. Even when he talks about aesthetics or spirituality, his tone always contains unpleasant, screeching notes of hysterical vulgarity. One glaring example occurs when he finds some Russian guy looking at a painting of two of Christ's apostles. The "stranger" asks the guy if he is religious, the guy says no. Immediately, the "stranger" harangues the guy with the line, "How can you understand this painting if you don't know Scripture?" He says this in a loud, stentorian voice, like the guy has some obligation to feel guilty in front of him. Then, tellingly, instead of developing this statement, he just repeats it, even louder, as if it's some kind of brilliant irrefutable argument. The guy stammers a justification -- he likes the way the artist depicted the apostles' worn faces and hands -- and the "stranger" mockingly repeats his words, as if his condescension alone constitutes a meaningful rebuttal.
The narrator's interaction with the "stranger" is similar. The narrator goes into a room and meets a famous person from Russian history, such as Czar Peter I. Usually, the famous person is seen doing something boorish and crude. The "stranger" gleefully seizes upon each occasion and rubs it in the narrator's face -- see, see, your great historical idols are so uncivilized and uncultured, and you admire them, so that means you're uncivilized and uncultured too, ha ha ha. The narrator tries to argue, but his half-hearted and ineffectual objections basically accept the terms of the debate. His responses run along the lines of "Yes, but..." and sometimes he just repeats what the "stranger" says without challenging it. In other words, he sounds like he admits his guilt for some great crime (the crime of being inferior, perhaps?), and is timidly trying to justify himself.
Consider the title of the film. The Hermitage is called the "Russian Ark." That is, the film suggests that the Hermitage somehow embodies the essence of Russian history and culture more than any other building. But this suggestion is very deliberate. It sets up the film in such a way as to allow the "stranger" to make one of his main assertions -- that Russians have no culture of their own, except what they allegedly plagiarized from other, allegedly superior cultures. Had the film taken place in the Tretyakov Gallery of Art, or in the Kremlin, buildings of equal historical stature to the Hermitage, the assertion would look silly, but the film bends over backwards to give it an air of legitimacy.
For the same reason, Peter I, Catherine II and Aleksandr Pushkin are all portrayed unflatteringly. All three were strong, independent figures in different ways, which is already enough to challenge the "stranger's" interpretation of history. So naturally they're his first targets, he has to ridicule them over and over, and woe to anyone who might admire them. But it's the poet Pushkin, not the czars, who gets the most hostile reception. The "stranger's" dismissive judgment of Pushkin is full of the aging intellectual's mean, cliquish snobbery: "Oh, Pushkin, yes, I read him once, he's nothing special. Nothing special at all." No argument, only airs and condescension. But Nicholas II, on the other hand, is a much weaker figure, and he's valuable for his status as victim, so he and his family are the only Russians whom the film depicts in a positive light.
At one point, the "stranger" wanders into a room where a disheveled man is making a coffin and yelling about death. The setting is World War II, during the blockade of Leningrad. But when the "stranger" asks what is going on, the narrator just says, "there was a war with Germany," and the "stranger" (who is supposed to come from the past, before Germany was united) wonders what "Germany" is. In the meantime, the guy throws them out of the room while brandishing a hammer and yelling that everyone is going to die. It's as if there is no Germany, as if the blockade just happened by itself, and the guy is just displaying his inherent Russian savagery or something.
Then the narrator runs across a few people talking in hushed voices and making veiled references to their fear of the (presumably Soviet, but not stated) government. Someone says that the government never understands or cares about art. Yet this very film was supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, which is stated in the opening credits. Even though there's no real reason why Sokurov should be entitled to such support. Should the French government support a hypothetical film called "French Ark," in which a British lord would walk through the Louvre and repeat over and over that the French have no culture of their own?
Quite aside from the content of the film, the script is appalling. The characters repeat absolutely trivial lines of dialogue multiple times, as if they carry great meaning. A typical exchange, as the narrator and the "stranger" walk down a hall, might go like this: "These are nice pictures." "Yes, nice pictures." "Yes, they are very nice pictures." "Nice pictures." I understand why so many reviewers called the film "boring." It's not the slow pace, it's the bad writing.
Anyway, eventually the narrator comes across a grand state ball. The "stranger" finally relents somewhat, in that he graciously admits that at least Russians know how to party. So, foreign audiences can congratulate themselves on their gracious humanism, after their cultural superiority has been reaffirmed. Sokurov can collect all the awards he can carry, and Russians, well, they probably don't even care about this film. And good for them.

Tom Baker's second outing as the renegade Time Lord is a solid entry in the venerable British science fiction series' history, and its overall quality is well-matched by the wealth of supplemental material on the DVD. Fan favorite Robert Holmes penned "The Ark in Space," which places the Doctor and his companions Sarah (Elisabeth Sladen) and Harry (Ian Marter) on a seemingly deserted space station many years in the future. Station Nerva is not as empty as it appears, though; onboard are the cryogenically preserved survivors of Earth's destruction, as well as an insectlike alien race, the Wirrin, which are determined to use the humans--and the Doctor--as hosts to grow their monstrous larvae. Holmes's well-paced script (which, like Alien, bears a resemblance to the A.E. van Vogt story "Black Destroyer") allows Baker to flesh out his well-loved take on the Doctor, as well as considerable suspense. --Paul Gaita

Essential Doctor Who.......2007-07-19
This was the first Doctor Who series I watched as a young boy, and I love it now as much as I loved it then. The DVD contains some great extras including a directors/actors comment track and some updated graphics. Look out for the evil bubble wrap!
"It may be irrational of me, but humans are quite my favourite species.".......2007-03-16
Well, it may be pretty irrational on my part to rate "The Ark in Space" five whole stars when there are noticeable imperfections in this storyline. For instance, the conclusion in episode four is a bit hard to follow as well as bordering on implausible (once you realize what's supposed to be happening), and some rather dodgy moments here and there in the dialogue don't help things. But the strengths tend to outweigh the weaknesses in the final analysis, and getting to see Tom Baker as the Doctor again after all these years trumps the matter as far as I'm concerned. Not that he's got the role down completely yet, this being only his second go at it after "Robot" beforehand, but all the basic elements of his almost archetypal eccentricity are here in the making. Simply fabulous.
The story as a whole is very inventive and imaginative, too, with a healthy dash of suspense and mystery that gradually develops into horror. The idea of the Doctor and his two companions stumbling onto an ancient space station in Earth's far future, triggering its various defense mechanisms and whatnot until finally discovering the crew in cryogenic stasis (so as to outlast a global catastrophe and then repopulate the earth) sets the stage nicely, and then it becomes a matter of finding out what has gone wrong, i.e. why the station malfunctioned and didn't awaken them at the appointed time, why certain crew members are missing altogether, and what has been leaving some rather gross organic residue around and about. Sure enough it's bug-eyed monsters (the Wirrn), who bear humankind some enmity and in any case find comatose humans a convenient source of nourishment.
Yep, that's where things get pretty horrific, but that and the station leader's torturous transmogrification into one of the insectoids is by way of harsh contrast part and parcel of the story's overarching theme, the worth and dignity of individual humanity. Pretty much everything comes together and points to this in fact, obvious things of course like the Doctor's multiple paeans to his favorite species and the space station itself preserving that species and all of its history, culture, and accomplishments (on microfilm) against adversity. The latter complicates the theme, for most of the humans on the station whom the Doctor and company awaken are rather coldly utilitarian eugenicists, and fighting for survival alongside the main characters gradually (and convincingly) humanizes them--it could plausibly be argued that this in fact is the primary plotline. And to top it off, the two people who really save the day at the end are a misfit cynical engineer and the station leader himself whose awful metamorphosis ironically gets him in touch with the last shred of his humanity.
In short, a fine story and theme well-realized by fine acting and pacing plus one of the earliest examples of Tom Baker's fantastic take on the Doctor all make this a fine "Doctor Who" DVD overall.
Doctor Who - The Ark in Space.......2007-02-04
This is an episode worth getting by anyone that is a Doc. Who fan. This episode occers in a far distant futear on a space station where the reminats of human kind are in supended animation. But the space station has been infested by another race (in this case a race of insecrs). The rest of this episode is about trying to defeate this race.
One of the best episodes ever!.......2007-01-12
If you like Tom Baker as Doctor Who, then this episode is a must have. The disc is loaded with extras including alternative special effect sequences and interviews.
The Ark In Space.......2006-01-30
The Ark in Space is one of the finest episodes of Doctor Who and Tom Baker was the BEST Doctor Who.

Good Choice.......2007-01-15
This was a good buy. I remember Bob Hope travelling abroad during the holidays, putting on his shows. This was a nice way to remember those days. I could have done without the celebs at his house and just seen the clips, that would have been enough for me.
Great Gift.......2007-01-10
Great gift for yourself or others who grew up with Bob Hope as kids and enjoy going back for some great humor.
Very enjoyable!.......2005-09-02
This brought back old memories from days when they used to have good Christmas specials on TV. I enjoyed it very much - the quality is good and the old songs are great!
No Dolly Parton.......2005-04-26
This was a good dvd and rather funny however even though Dolly is mentioned on the back of the DVD along with a few other people, she nor others are actually in the movie though there are a few jokes poked fun at them.
Same DVD as in 3 pack of Hope stuff sold at Costco?.......2004-11-10
Is this the same title as was sold in a three pack of Bob Hope shows that was sold in Costco last holiday season?
