A strong ensemble and director Tom McCarthy's sweetly low-key observations make Sundance fave The Station Agent a treat. The film revolves around a reserved, somber dwarf (Peter Dinklage, immortalized by his brilliant ticked-off tirade in Living in Oblivion), a train enthusiast who inherits a small depot in rural New Jersey. He makes friends, somewhat reluctantly, with a group of eccentric locals: the guy at the coffee stand (buoyant Bobby Cannavale), an artist (Patricia Clarkson, impeccable as usual), a librarian (Michelle Williams). A few of the plot strands feel forced, but whenever the actors are simply playing off each other with McCarthy's nicely understated dialogue--which is most of the time--it ambles along winningly. You'll also learn more than you ever thought you'd want to know about trains. The key is Dinklage's smoldering performance, one of those reminders that a single scowl is worth pages of conversation. --Robert Horton

Description

Winner of 2003 Sundance Film Festival awards (Best Drama, Audience Award; Best Screenplay, Tom McCarthy; Best Performance, Patricia Clarkson), THE STATION AGENT stars Emmy Award winner Patricia Clarkson (TV's SIX FEET UNDER, FAR FROM HEAVEN), Peter Dinklage (ELF), and Bobby Cannavale (TV's 24, THIRD WATCH) in a comedy about friendship that will have you smiling long after the final credits. Fin McBride (Dinklage), a loner with a passion for trains, inherits an abandoned train station in the middle of nowhere -- a place that suits him just fine because all he wants is to be alone. But that is not to be. Soon after moving in, he discovers his isolated depot is more like Grand Central Station. There's Olivia (Clarkson), a distracted and troubled artist, and Joe (Cannavale), a friendly Cuban with an insatiable hunger for conversation. With absolutely nothing in common, they find their isolated lives coming together in a friendship none of them could foresee.

5 out of 5 stars WOW What a wonderful must see and own film.......2007-08-28

Have you ever watched a movie and forgotten you were even watching a movie, because you seemed to be sitting on the sidelines observing? This is that kind of movie and its wonderful because the acting is so seamless that you literally forget you are watching men and women playing a part. Instead you are watching real characters come to life.

And I think because the director allowed stillness and quiet reflection to speak, that the movie says so much. It literally makes the adage a picture says a thousand words a reality. Peter Dinklage becomes the quiet reclusive man in the old no longer used train station, who then opens up. And the director. writer made his character so real by all the interesting facts about trains and the railroad, which any train buff will love. Even the question about blimps, made me want to look up facts about blimps.

The scenery is spectacular and used well. Bobby Cannavale plays the owner of a mobile coffee stand and is someone you might actually know if your live in a small town. Patricia Clarkson plays an artist who has lost a son and now her marriage and is in a deep deep depression. The Librarian and other characters are a good addition to the film.

The vulnerability of Finbar McBride played by Peter Dinklage, like when the boyfriend of a young woman whom Finbar has befriended starts hitting on her and Finbar steps in and wants him to stop, yet being a dwarf he cant do much and needs to actually protect himself.

Also appreciated this movie because it was thoughtful, mature and didnt resort to nudity, violence and other cheap movie tricks to keep the viewers attention. Love serious movies that stimulate my brain and then my eyes.

Reminds each of us that we have areas where we to are vulnerable and scared. The mix of characters actually reminded me of an Mary Englebriet quote that says 'Friends are the Family we choose for ourselves'.

5 out of 5 stars Unique characters, nothing telegraphed.......2007-08-04

This movie can't be described in a catch phrase. That's a good thing. I didn't know anyting about the movie before I saw it and I didn't know where it would lead. The characters were real and their troubles strengths slowly unfold. The best summary I can give is that this is a 'slice of life' film. It shows how 3 lonely people learn to connect, but the process is the real pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars The Station Agent.......2007-07-30

Effortlessly charming and suffused with deadpan wit, this wonderful story directed by actor-turned-director McCarthy tackles loneliness, pain, and tragedy--the stuff of life, in other words--with quiet confidence and quirky passion. Clarkson and Carnavale are delightful as Fin's new friends, yet the movie is unimaginable without Dinklage's touching turn as a defensive man whose passion for trains helps stanch the pain of having lost his truest friend. Funny and deceptively simple, "Agent" is the kind of smart, refreshingly understated indie I wish we'd see more of from the Sundance crowd.

5 out of 5 stars a true gem of a film.......2007-07-19

This is a gem, the kind you recommend to friends and then later on they thank you for it. A lovely independent film that does not have to rely on car crashes, rape, torture or unnecessary swearing. Patricia Clarkson is both funny and heartbreaking as a lonely woman; Bobby Cannavale is hilarious as the vendor; and Peter Dinklage is simply wonderful as the reclusive man who ends up with company he never expected during a quest to be alone. Watch for Michelle Williams as well.

1 out of 5 stars No Plot, No Point, No...Nothing!!.......2007-07-09

A really boring 90 minutes or so. Many people I believe, watch movies to escape their own boring lives--not to see someone else's boring lives. This is why movies set in locations of Eastern Europe are exciting--most people have never been there! New Jersey--NOT! There seems to be no plot or point. This movie starts nowhere and goes nowhere fast.

Even the hot dog seller seems so bored out of his mind that he's desperate to talk to ANYone! Sure the librarian is cute but she needs an abortion before she's ready for a relationship. And then the redneck will probably kill the dwarf for getting involved with her!

5 out of 5 stars Howling good fun!!.......2007-04-06

The Movie that made me WANT to be a Skier!! I love this Movie!! Is it Oscarworthy? Not even close. But for just good escapist fun, there are not many movies that are better than this one. Yes, it is far more likely to appeal to Guys than Gals due to the T&A component. But, there is also some substance here in the Movie in the Skiing sequences. The Producers were smart enough to use real skiers to do the skiing sequences and the skiers they got were GREAT!! After you see it, who will ever forget Robbie Huntoon's stunt of skiing through the Lodge at the end of the "Chinese Downhill". The Movie now comes across as dated in lot of ways, it is VERY early 80's!! From the Music to the Ski Equipment, to even the Sport of Freestyle Skiing. Whatever did happen to Ballet Skiing anyway? However, our Freeriders of today will enjoy the Aerial Competition, (Handled by Skier Jeff Chumas), and they will be amazed at how different Mogul Skiing is now compared to then.

Then there is the party hardy aspect to what is happening. Having been a Professional Ski Bum at one point in my life, (not too far after Hot Dog came out), I can tell you they got the partying side of skiing RIGHT!!!

David Naughton does a terrific job in this movie. He also does much of the singing of the original songs that you hear in this movie. My favorite is "When you were mine". "American Werewolf in London" is a CLASSIC and in it's own way so is "Hot Dog the Movie".

I will tell you that if you are a Skier, and loved the wild raunchy side of the 80's this is a great Movie for you. If you like movies like "Bachelor Party" with Tom Hanks, you will love this movie.

It is what it is and to me "Hot Dog the Movie" is worth seeing ANYTIME!!!

4 out of 5 stars Cheezy movie!.......2007-03-18

Viewed this movie alot in collage (Go Blue)! Great beer drinking movie with friends!

5 out of 5 stars Ski Naked!.......2007-03-10

If you like to ski and party this is a classic. Not only are the ski scenes great, but if you've been around awhile you'll get a kick out of the equipment we use to use. My wife and I first went to Squaw Valley before we were married, and love to pick out places we remember. We watch this movie before every ski trip!

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-03-08

This is a classic for any hardcore skier or random Gen Xer. I remember my friend RENTED A VCR so we could watch it. Many, many classic lines in here, and gratuitous nudity galore.

5 out of 5 stars What to watch before you ski the next day!.......2007-01-22

This movie is a classic! Used to watch it every friday night in the 80's before skiing the weekend in Tahoe. Since had lost the vhs tape. Could not beleive this is in DVD. The quality is not as high as it should be, you can tell it was taken from film to dvd and sound could be improved.

Cannot forget the International Chinese Downhill... and the song by Mitch Ryder "when you were mine" can't be found anywhere on line so this is your chance to get that classic sung by the Detroit Wheels.

Careful after watching this movie, your skiing ability will not actually increase but your enthusiasim for it will!

Good footage of Squaw Valley before the skate rink fell in and the awesome double diamond runs.

The hot dog story is my son's favorite. He doesn't care much for the second story but has watched the hot dog episode many many times.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-17

My 15 month dauther loves Boohbah. Hot dog is her first Boohbah DVD and she loves it. There are three stories on the DVD and I like it because I can play all three if we have the time or just one if we only have a few minutes.

For anyone who hasn't seen Boohbah, it's not like other children's movies. It can be compared to Teletubies. I don't know why children like it but my dauther doesn't budge when the movie is one. I can actually enjoy a few minutes to myself.

Don't expect to "get it" as an adult but children love it.

Description

This fun documentary called A Hot Dog Program looks at one of America's favorite foods and shows some places around the country where you can get wonderful wieners. From Coney Island on the Fourth of July to Alaska at the start of the Iditarod sled dog race, we talk to some hot dog connoisseurs along the way. In Chicago, the dogs are dressed heavily; in Macon, Georgia, the wieners are bright red; and in Las Vegas, they're huge. You can get a Super Duper Weenie in Fairfield, Connecticut, a deep fried "ripper" at Rutt's Hut in Clifton, New Jersey, and a snappy slay dog at Frank's in Columbia, South Carolina.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Americana.......2007-03-20

This classic documentary is formally about hotdogs, and it chronicles many outstanding eateries. But at its core is a marked populist sensibility. We the people are the stars: Americans of all kinds (some tourists too), united by hunger and satisfied by a perennial favorite meal. The film contains much more: witty, charming interviews in many distinctive dialects and accents; explorations of ethnicity, oral culture and oral history; roadside architecture; regional rivalries, self-made entrepreneurs, and of course that ultimate gross-out institution, the eating contest. The only drawback is probably unavoidable. A film celebrating Hotdog Nation (no Fast Food Nation, not here) has only fleeting comments on nutritional shortcomings, though clearly HDs can be quite healthy. There is a brief scene in a hotdog factory, not because "if people saw them being made, they'd never eat one again", but strictly for context. I've seen it twice and will again---it's a great teaching tool---and spend a couple of days each time fulfilling that craving. And I always saw myself as a hamburger guy....D. Gabaccia, "We Are What We Eat" and H. Diner, "Hungering for America" cover similar themes and more as well. BTW, on PBS this was followed this by a promising doc on roadside architecture. We saw a bit but then gave up; hotdogs are a tough act to follow, but maybe it was simply too much Americana.

5 out of 5 stars Great party starter........2007-03-09

This extremely entertaining and highly re-watchable documentary takes the viewer to unique hot dog restaurants all over the country, experiencing the fun and tasty character of each place. Watching this will make you want a few hot dogs yourself, so be prepared.

The presentation is 100% positive, no segments on hot dog manufacturing or on ingredients with questionable palatability. No comments on sodium or coloring or other additives. Its all about why each particular eatery attracts and brings back its clientele, which usually includes a combination a great sausage, unique toppings or equally unique servers. You also get a lot of history about hot dogs and the restaurants, which adds some nice background.

This video is so great that we not only watch it ourselves but also invite friends over to watch it, then, half-way through we start serving hot dogs and all the trimmings. It's always a big hit.

5 out of 5 stars Great Show.......2007-01-11

I Love this program. Makes me want to quit my job and open a hot dog stand

5 out of 5 stars Mechanically Seperated Beef, Chicken, fillers? Who Cares..........2006-07-28

This was great entertainment. Why I have viewed this over 10 times is still a mystery to me, but a warning. This video will make you crave a hotdog. You may find yourself looking for a hotdog only stand or restaurant. Sadly in Philadelphia, where I reside, we do not have such places with the exception of the street vendors. Hotdogs are typically labeled on children's menu only at restaurants here so it was interesting to see Chicago, NYC as some of the hotspots of Hotdog consumage (If that is a word). The production of this video is excellent and it is in the editing of the interviews that is strong. The music behind running behind it all is ridiculously funny. The subjects interviewed are sometimes outrageous as was the Papaya King and Gray's Papaya segment in NYC. Also included with this DVD is the entire 1998 Nathans Hot Dog Eating contest as it happened. It's hard to believe the record for hotdogs eaten has now grown above forty.

5 out of 5 stars A Celebration! Don't miss it!.......2005-06-11

I have forgotten when I first encountered the documentaries of Rick Sebak, but they have enriched my life. They are all great, fun TV shows that you can sit down and watch with anyone. Kids like them because they are quirky and funny; older people like them because these shows so often pay homage to the past. Repeatedly, we have watched them as a family and enjoyed them more each time.

To be specific about "A Hot Dog Program", Sebak and Co. go all over the country visiting hot dog stands. Sebak maintains that hot dogs, unlike hamburgers, have not become standardized products of cookie-cutter-same chains. So, he finds lots of interesting, quirky places and talks to the people he finds there.

I am always amazed at how natural and engaging all these people are. Sebak clearly puts them at ease and catches them at their best.

I was amazed at the variety of types of hot dogs, and how each region of the country is so protective of their regional way of preparing, dressing, accompanying their dogs. New York style, with a side of papaya juice? Chicago style, loaded up with stuff? Southern style, with slaw? It would be worth the road trip to find out in person.

I would recommend this to anyone, but especially to parents who want something really interesting and entertaining to share with their kids. Teachers might also like it as a "jumping off" point for discussions about regional differences, respecting others' tastes, etc.

By the way, I like all-beef hot dogs, grilled, with yellow mustard and relish (but not that Chicago-style neon green stuff), served on a fresh, lightly toasted bun. A side of fries or potato salad is nice, too.

5 out of 5 stars Reminisicing.......2007-06-22

I remember coming home from Highschool back when Wishbone was still being aired on PBS and watching the episodes every afternoon with my little sister who, at the time, was about 10. She and I are both adults now and we both remember how much we loved watching the series after school. Because I think Wishbone was such a phenomenal show suitable for children of all ages I have been trying to purchase the DVDs for my daughter. I feel that she would enjoy, and benefit, from the love of literature that imaginative little dog has. This is definately something I recommend parents to invest for their children to open them up to the special gift of reading and to expose them to the blessings of great literature this vast planet has been given by talented writers.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, Wishbone on DVD.......2004-07-27

Wishbone is a little Jack Russell terrier with a big imagination. He's the star of a wonderful PBS children's show that helps introduce kids to classic literature. In this episode he imagines himself to be Professor Otto Liedenbrock who leads his nephew on an incredible subterranean journey. I can't say enough about how wonderful the Wishbone TV series is. This little dog has more expression on his furry face than most Hollywood actors do today. The writing and acting is first rate. And of course Wishbone would be the first to tell you about the Emmy Award he received. Check this out, I hope it's the first of the entire 50+ episode series on DVD. It's a fantastic adventure for kids of all ages.

ROADKILL (DVD MOVIE)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a fine example of Canadian cinema!.......2004-08-14

Roadkill is the first part of a loosely connected rock `n' roll/road movie trilogy by Canadian filmmaker Bruce McDonald. The movie was something of a breath of fresh air when it debuted because Canadian film had, up until then, been traditionally known as notoriously boring or, worse, derivative of American movies. McDonald managed to fuse the low budget aesthetics of the emerging U.S. indie film movement with a distinctively Canadian take on the road movie genre.

Extras include a nine-minute short film by McDonald called "Elimination Dance," starring McKellar as a man who attends a dance marathon with couples being eliminated for hilariously bizarre reasons like "anyone who's lost a urine sample in the mail."

Next up is another McDonald short film entitled "Fort Goof" that runs six and half minutes long. The director holds a casting call for a role in a movie. A roomful of women audition and give all kinds of different readings of the same lines of dialogue.

A small collection of behind-the-scenes photographs can be accessed in the "Photo Gallery" section.

Finally, the highlight of the supplemental material is an audio commentary by actor/screenwriter Don McKellar and the film's producer Colin Brunton. They fondly recount anecdotes about making the movie. This is a good track as both men talk constantly and impart a genuine enthusiasm and humour about their movie.

Roadkill is an excellent example of Canadian cinema. While it adopts a distinctly American genre like the road movie, it remains uniquely Canadian in content (except for the presence of Joey Ramone) and attitude. Bruce McDonald remains one of the unsung heroes of the Canadian film scene, often overshadowed by its more well-known figures, David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan and Denys Arcand. McDonald has remained fiercely independent over the years, supplementing his film career with a prolific one in Canadian television. Roadkill is an excellent example of his early work and an engaging, entertaining movie in its own right.

4 out of 5 stars eid ro evom.......2004-07-07

I first saw this movie on the cbc about 12 years ago or so. Then, in my late teens, it really had an affect on me. This is probably the best black and white, Canadian, rock and roll road movie you'll ever see. I think it still holds up after all these years.
The story follows Ramona, who works for a concert promoter, to northern Ontario. She's there to find the Children of Paradise and bring them back to Toronto so they can stop wasting the promoters money. Along the way she meets Don McKellar, a serial killer and Bruce MacDonald, a music video director. There's even a cameo from Joey Ramone.
The ending is a little goofy but I really like this movie. It's not for everyone, though. Fans of the late 80's independant movement (music and film) should take note.

Description

The only color film from cult director Jerry Warren (THE WILD WORLD OF BAT WOMAN (1966)), FRANKENSTEIN ISLAND stars genre vets John Carridine and Cameron Mitchell in a tale concerning a hot air balloon which crashes on a mysterious island. The castaways discover that the island is overrun with zombies and a strange race of Amazons, and at the center of it all is a distant relative of the Frankensteins--who is once again trying to create a being out of dead body parts. Renowned for its maniacal story and less-than-convincing special effects, this film has garnered a befuddled cult following.

1 out of 5 stars Please, Don't Do THIS To Yourself!..........2006-04-21

Jerry Warren (Incredible Petrified World, Teenage Zombies) is to horror movie directing what Godzilla is to urban renewal! No one should have ever allowed him to pick up a camera, not even as a joke! FRANKENSTEIN ISLAND is quite possibly the nadir of all schlock-o-matic film-making. It's certainly the worst thing Warren himself ever unleashed upon us. Plot?? Well, 4 bumpkins crash their hot-air balloon into the ocean, only to wash ashore on the title island. They are soon joined by alien babes in leopard-skin bikinis. So far so good. Alas, the fun ends there. 5 minutes into this 96 minute endurance test, we are treated to Cameron Mitchell as a captive sailor who knows nothing but how to quote Edgar Allen Poe stories. We meet Katherine Victor as Mrs. Frankenstein, bent on..., um, nothing in particular. We see her laboratory, complete w/ knobs, dials, bubbling chemicals, and a spinning bullet-box painted pink. John Carradine's head pops in and out, burbling things like "The golden thread! The power! The POWER!" over and over. His "role" in this hunk of poo is almost as embarassing as Bela's "Pull The String!" appearance in GLEN OR GLENDA! However, at least GOG was funny. FRANKENSTEIN ISLAND is so spectacularly dull, that I contemplated suicide, but decided I had to survive long enough to write this review! Oh yeah, there is a monster in this "movie". He showed up at the hour and twenty minute mark, long after I'd lost the will to live. So, please heed my warning! Do not subject yourself to this cinematic donkey turd! To equal it's effects in far less time, just stand in the toilet and stick your finger in a light socket. Aloha...

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2004-10-06

A hot air balloon crashes into an island occupied by an ancestor of Dr. Frankenstein - yes, it's as bad as it sounds.

4 out of 5 stars My Brain Hurts!.......2004-02-02

I love bad movies, and am used to movies that hurt a lot, but this one even surpassed my high threshold of pain. I had to watch it in two viewings as I just couldn't take it after about the first hour. Brought to you by Jerry "Wild, Wild World of Batwoman" Warren, and his cast of regulars, with special guest 'appearance' by John Carradine, who, apparently, would be in absolutely anything. Here Carradine is in fine form as a disembodied head, which shrieks a lot, but seemingly has no other connection with the alleged plot. Katherine "Batwoman" Victor plays Sheila Frankenstein, and gets to wear the silliest wig I have ever seen. Also look out for a couple of the other Warren regulars from "Batwoman"; I don't know their names, but you will instantly recognize the voices as those of the two guys who worked at the 'Ayjax Development Corporation', in the Atomic Powered Hearing Aid Division. (If in the off chance you haven't seen "Batwoman", go get it at once: it is the film that defines Jerry Warren as a director.)

I really can't summarize the plot, and if you are familiar with Jerry Warren's film stylings, you know why: there is no plot. (There is WAY less plot here than his earlier "Batwoman" debacle.) I will just tell you that somehow involved in the storyline are: a balloon crash, the worst Frankenstein monster I have ever seen, girls in loincloths, idiot servant men in women's sunglasses, and a dog.

For bad movie aficionados this is a true treasure, and is not to be missed, for anyone else, forget it. There are a couple of bonus features, including an interview with Katherine Victor called "Hangin' With Sheila Frankenstein" in which she discusses the film, and wears the gaudiest ring I have ever seen in my life. She seems pretty funny and obviously enjoyed her part in this atrocity.

I almost gave this five stars for unending badness, but changed my mind, and only gave it four, on account of the headache it gave me. Go get it, and if you can fully comprehend the subtleties and nuances that I obviously missed, drop me a line.

1 out of 5 stars Must see - Garbage.......2003-01-19

This is BY FAR... the worst movie I have ever seen. The movie makes no sense. This movie is SO BAD... you will be humiliated to think you actually sat and endured the movie... that is... if you have the courage to wait through the movie... and you will... because you will want to find out what's going on. You will get suckered into watching the whole movie only to find there is NOTHING there. Nothing... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING makes sense. It's a waste if celluloid. MUST SEE... because it will make every subsequent movie-watching experience a true joy.

5 out of 5 stars So stupid, it's genius.......2002-10-25

I won't tell you the plot, even though you probably have a good idea that there really isn't one that makes sense. This is a wacky, wild movie with people getting stranded on the island, scientist gone mad, psycho henchmen, bikini clad beauties and yes, there is the monster, whoa! If you like classic low budget B-Movie madness, don't pass this one up. A real twisted gem. Only for people with a good sense of humour.
