4 out of 5 stars Brightest of dark cinema.......2007-06-23

The CLASSIC FILM NOIR 9 MOVIE PACK offers thirteen full hours of spine-tingling shadowy melodramas and some of Hollywood's best actors, all at one terrific low price. Film noir (or "dark cinema") reigned supreme from the late 1930s until the early 50s. Unlike most "happy ending" movies, in noir the protagonist often faced humiliation, defeat and even death. These little gems are all still very highly regarded by connoisseurs of this genre, and for good reason. If you are new to film noir, here's the perfect set to start your collection off right!

And if you have all these great titles already, or would like even more of the same, then you simply cannot go wrong with the DARK CRIMES COLLECTION 50 MOVIE PACK. It'll keep you on the edge of your seat for weeks to come.

.
The following alphabetized movie list includes viewer poll 1 to 10 ratings, years of release and principal actors for each title.

(7.3) Detour (1945) - Tom Neal/Ann Savage
(7.4) D.O.A. (1950) - Edmond O'Brien
(7.1) The Hitch-Hiker (1953) - Edmund O'Brien/Frank Lovejoy/William Talman.
(7.3) The Man Who Cheated Himself (1950) - Lee J. Cobb/Jane Wyatt
(6.4) Quicksand (1950) - Mickey Rooney/Peter Lorre
(6.4) The Scar ("Hollow Triumph")(1948) - Paul Henreid/Joan Bennett

5 out of 5 stars GREAT collection of FILM NOIR for AWESOME PRICE.......2007-05-16

I saw this DVD set in a Best Buy a few months ago. It was only six or seven dollars, so I bought it. I sat down and watched a couple of the films and they were awesome. I haven't finished watching the whole set but of the 4-5 films I have watched, it was totally worth every penny. D.O.A. and Detour are my favorites so far... the only one I really didn't like was The Scar. I guess I just couldn't get into it.

5 out of 5 stars great collection of film noir in one set!.......2007-04-23

The movies in this collection are some of the best

From the first disc to the last there isn't a dud

2 out of 5 stars Too bad Sony/Columbia doesn't respect the Stooges.......2007-01-03

My middling rating does not reflect on The Three Stooges, who are, of course fantastic, but as a criticism of Sony/Columbia, which by releasing the Stooges on DVD in the manner it does, shows a tremendous lack of respect for their brilliance, as well as for their commercial success. We all know about how Columbia treated the Stooges so shoddily while they worked for the studio, underpaying them despite the fact that they were one of the studio's most valuable properties; sadly, this disrespect even continues on.

Columbia should be releasing DVD's that honor the Stooges work, not just exploit it. They could easily have made these DVD's into tributes to the Stooge's work at the studio, as historical records of their years of great work. They should have arranged the shorts chronologically, instead of by these bizarre 'themes', often based more upon the titles than the actual content of the shorts. As an example, the 'Three Smart Saps' disc contains five shorts that have the word 'three' in their titles, while 'G.I. Stooges' contains episodes where the Stooges serve in the military (not necessarily the US military, I might add!, OR the merchant marine(BACK FROM THE FRONT), OR just wear enemy uniforms (NO DOUGH BOYS).

This approach makes little sense, and it really breaks down on the 'Cops and Robbers' disc, which includes shorts where the Stooges are private detectives, reporters, firemen AND veterinarians!

Others have pointed out better than I can the other shortcomings of these discs (no special features, only five shorts per disc, etc...).

I would add another complaint that on several of the shorts, there are small snippets of scenes missing, which tells me that Columbia did VERY little work in compiling these discs. The prints ARE excellent, and the sound is good, but it seems that the studio just used the prints they had available, and made no effort to seek out others that were more complete. I KNOW that more complete prints exist, because like all of you, I have seen them for years shown on TV. How miserly and uncaring of Columbia to not put some effort into fully restoring these shorts. It could have been done, but apparently they did not think it worth bothering.

Columbia, SHAME ON YOU!

Despite this, a Stooges fan MUST buy them, because these discs are the only way to get decent-looking copies of these comedic geniuses' work. So, yes I have bought them, and yes, I will buy more of them. But every time I do, I will bear a grudge against Columbia.

Columbia, SHAME ON YOU!

5 out of 5 stars 3 stooges 2.......2006-09-02

a knockout funny funny collection. Moe Larry Currley and Shemp at thier absolute best. A MUST HAVE.

5 out of 5 stars My 1st Three Stooges Boxed Set........2005-12-30

I got this last Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Great item.......2005-10-25

This is the perfect companion to the other Three Stooges DVD collection here, the one that includes the following DVDs: "Curly Classics," "Spook Louder," and "All The World's A Stooge."

This set features the DVDs "G.I Stooge," "Cops and Robbers," and "Three Smart Saps."

The picture quality varies from short to short, but generally falls into the acceptable range, as does the audio quality. Buying these sets of three will save you a few dollars over buying each release individually.

The short "Who Done It?" is included here, via "Cops and Robbers," and is the highest rated short the Stooges EVER did over at ThreeStooges dot net, a popular Stooges fan site.

Product Description

Six two-reel shorts, including:

Calling All Curs (1939) Veterinarians Moe, Larry and Curly have gone to the dogs, but when they attempt to replace a priceless pooch that's been dognapped while under their care, they really wind up in the doghouse. They're barking up the wrong tree if they think they can get away with this scheme!

Disorder in the Court (1936) When a sexy nightclub dancer is put on trial for murder, her only hope is three star witnesses: Moe, Larry and Curly. The Stooges are only too happy to help, but when they show up in court to testify, their antics disrupt the proceedings, and the defense never rests.

Dizzy Detectives (1943) Rookie gumshoes Moe, Larry and Curly kick off their new careers with a case that proves to be way over their heads. It seems a gorilla is committing a series of burglaries, and they may be the only ones to catch him. Can they crack the case before the big ape really goes bananas?

Flat Foot Stooges (1938) A crooked fire truck salesman finds himself in hot water when he sabotages one of Fire Chief Kelly's trucks. While Larry, Moe and Curly pamper Chief Kelly's fire truck-pulling horses, a blaze engulfs the firehouse and puts the firefighting Stooges to the ultimate test.

Crime on Their Hands (1948) Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but they're not Shemp's. When he mistakes the Punjab Diamond for a breath mint, Shemp faces the end of an unsterilized knife in the hands of Dapper Dan, who stole the diamond and wants it back ^ and he's not waiting until it passes naturally.

Who Done it? (1949) When The Phantom Gang strikes again, millionaire Old Man Goodrich calls the Alert Detective Agency and hires the Stooges to protect him. But Moe, Larry and Shemp arrive just after Goodrich is kidnapped, and are thwarted by a seductress who administers a near-lethal dose of distraction.

3 out of 5 stars Why.......2007-01-31

I love the Stooges, i've been a fan for over ten years now. I just cant understand how dvds are put together. This set could have included the classic Shivering Sherlocks and Hot Scots instead of Calling all Curs and Flat Foot Stooges. Its one mans opinion but I know the Stooges very well. I know the man who puts these dvds out isnt Stooge fan, maybe just a causal fan. I use to write the man who wrote an encloypedia on them. We had some great chats about Stooges. Its time for Columbia to wake up and release "ALL" Stooge shorts onto one massive set. I mean if we can get Newlyweds or Simple Life on dvd so fast, why not the Stooges? Granted Stooge shorts range from classic to forgetable. They could divide them into three parts-Curly, Shemp, and Joe. Six shorts on one dvd is bare minuim, they could easily put 10-15 on each disc. I would love some bonus material on them as well. I think its about time to give Stooges there due.

5 out of 5 stars Comedy hall of Fame.......2007-01-05

The 3 Stooges : a comedy team at its best...if there is such a place in Hollywood for a 'Comedy Hall of Fame'. The Three Stooges would be inducted. "A" (plus) List comedy.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but not consistently great.......2006-08-04

As others have mentioned, the picture quality on this disc isn't always the greatest. We know that there are better prints available; it isn't like these are the best surviving prints and there could only be so much digital restoration done on them. They're far from unwatchable, but it is annoying to see these grainy prints when better ones are out there. And once again, not all of the chosen shorts have much, or even anything, to do with the theme of 'Cops and Robbers.' The shorts included are:

'Disorder in the Court' (1936), which is one of their all-time best and a bona-fide classic. This is also widely considered to be Bud Jamison's best work with the boys. It seems like this short is in many fans' Top 10 of their personal favorites. However, since it is one of the 4 shorts that accidentally fell into the public domain (probably due to a clerical oversight), there are numerous releases of it already. It would seem wrong for it not to have been released on DVD, since it's such a classic, but it could have been included on another disc so that a lesser-seen short relevant to the topic could have been put here in its place.

'Flat Foot Stooges' (1938) is above average, though not really a classic or one of their most memorable shorts. I personally like 'False Alarms' better when it comes to their firefighter-themed shorts. However, it is very solid and enjoyable. This short was directed by the great Charley Chase, and though most of the shorts he did with the boys are more plot-centered as opposed to focusing on the slapstick and violence, this one has more of both in it than usually. I also enjoyed seeing veteran character actor Chester Conklin as Chief Kelly.

'Calling All Curs' (1939) is also above average, though not one I would consider one of their very greatest or most classic. It also doesn't really relate to the theme of the disc, apart from the title and the fact that there are a couple of dognappers featured. It would actually have been better-suited for inclusion on the 'Dizzy Doctors' disc, since the boys are playing veterinarians here. Again, a solid funny short, just not anything extremely memorable or classic.

'Dizzy Detectives' (1943) is another very good short, even though I personally wouldn't consider it a classic or one of their most memorable. It's also stupid how the opening scene is stock footage from 'Pardon My Scotch' (1935); someone who sits down to watch this short might even initially think it were mislabelled and that it's really 'Pardon My Scotch,' since both have the exact same opening scene. (Although that scene, it should be mentioned, caused a real-life injury when Moe fell off of the table that was sawed in half. It really demonstrates what a professional he was that he was able to stand up, deliver his next lines, and slap the other two even though he'd just broken a few of his ribs and collapsed immediately afterwards. Most actors today, comedians or serious actors, would probably never even finish the scene after suffering such a serious injury.) This short is a little slow in spots, and usually it comes off as lame and unbelievable (to a modern audience at least) to see a person in a gorilla suit being passed off as an actual gorilla. There's also a surprising moment in the scene where Curly is coming to Larry's rescue, when we hear an unmistakable sound that obviously wasn't done on purpose. You'll know what kind of a sound it is if you've watched it.

'Crime on Their Hands' (1948) is a great short. As of this date I've only seen about half of the Shemp shorts, but so far this one is my favorite. It's a great spoof of film noir, and it boasts one of Kenneth MacDonald's best roles with the boys. They did a lot of shorts of this nature during the Shemp era (acting as detectives), but this is one of their best ones. Eeverything is so great about this, flowing so perfectly from beginning to end, with a great plot, great slapstick, that great ad-lib from Shemp when he pretends to be a reporter talking back to the boss like they do in the movies, and a really cute funny ending.

'Who Done It?' (1949) is considered by many to be one of the best Shemp shorts, though I think it may be perhaps somewhat overrated (perhaps because they did so many detective-themed shorts during this era, and that premise kind of gets boring, or at least predictable, after awhile). However, he is just great in it, in every single scene, from photographing the fingerprints on the table (while continually wandering over to Christine McIntyre), to his over-the-top reaction after she tries to poison him, to the fight where the lights keep going on and off (his call, "Here I am, Moe!" is just hysterical!). And as usual, there's a great performance by Emil Sitka. The only really bad moment was when Moe was acting like Curly when the paintings were attacking him. It's kind of embarrassing to watch him doing these mannerisms that really can only ever belong to one comedian ever, because he made them his own and no one else's. It just doesn't work on anyone else.

Perhaps not the greatest disc in this series, though even in spite of having a few shorts that are only above-average instead of really GREAT, they are all very solid and funny, and it's not as though there are any below-average or outright horrible shorts included here.

3 out of 5 stars KIND OF A MIXED BAG OF STOOGES.......2005-02-04

Cops and Robbers isn't the best Stooges compilation DVD but it's not the worst either. It does contain a couple of Shemp shorts bu they're Early Shemps and not too bad.

"Who Done it?" 1949 - The stooges are private detectives looking for a missing millionaire. They wander around the millionaire's spooky mansion confronting various crooks and a dangerous dame. The stooges vanquish the crooks and find the missing man. Features Nikko the Goon!

"Crime on their Hands" 1948 - The stooges are janitors working in a newspaper office. When an anonymous caller phones in a tip about the theft a famous diamond, the boys decide to become reporters and go after the crooks. They find the crooks, and Shemp accidentally swallows the diamond. The crooks decide to cut the diamond out, but the boys foil them with the help of a friendly gorilla.

"Flat Foot Stooges" - 1938 - The stooges are firemen at a station that still uses horses to pull the engines. The chiefs daughter catches a crook sabatoging their equipment. When a fire starts, the stooges respond to the alarm, but don't realize its their firehouse that's burning! Somehow they manage to arrive in time to save the girl, and the villain gets his just desserts.

"Dizzy Detectives" 1943 - The stooges are carpenters who become policemen. A mysterious burglar disguised as a gorilla has the cops baffled. The Stooges pose as night watchmen at an antiques store. They confront the crook, who turns out to be a real gorilla owned by Dill. After defeating Dill and some other bad guys in a wild fight, the gorilla drinks some nitroglycerin and blows up.

"Calling all Curs" - 1939 - The stooges run a pet hospital and a poodle named Garcon, is stolen by dognappers. First they try to fool the rich lady owner by disguising a mutt as the poodle. When that doesn't work, they use the mutt as a bloodhound to track down the crooks. When they discover the bad guys hideout, Curly defeats them in a fight and they find Garcon, only to discover that "he" has had a litter of puppies.

"Disorder in the Court" 1936 - The stooges are witnesses at a trial where their friend, a dancer at a nightclub where they are musicians, is accused of murder. The stooges manage to disrupt the proceedings but save the day when they discover the real murderer's identity. Features the famous bit with Curly trying to take the oath!

VEry mixed bag here...Disorder in the Court is a near classic bu shows up on virtually every Stooges public domain DVD that comes out. Calling all Curs is above average and Dizzy Detectives is pretty good. The rest is fairly average.

There's no waste in any of these stories, Shemp incluid, although "disorder in the court" it's in another DVD. The crazy things they do in every movie can't be described, it's a surprise after another one, you laugh so much your jaw finishes discolated and with tears in the eyes. This is very useful when you feel blue, it's makes you feel better.

Description

Pandemonium and hilarity break loose when two rogue New York City cops decide to jump fence and join the ranks of crooks. This "sharp-edged satire" (Boxoffice) is a "funny, exciting [and] exceptionally intelligent caper movie" (The New York Times) loaded with enough twists to keep youguessing to its thrilling end! Disillusioned with life on the force, two of New York's finest decide to put their badges to bad use'to get into a Wall Street brokerage so they can leave with $10 million in untraceable bonds! But the plan goes awry when their deal to cash in the bonds with a local mafioso goes sour. Now wanted on both sides of the law, the bumbling cops find themselves in a race to get out of Manhattan with their loot and their lives!

3 out of 5 stars Re: altered version.......2006-07-21

Not to beat this topic to death, but here's a couple more comments. The present movie is far from being ruined. It's still enjoyable. The spirit and feel are still there. It's just that for those who have seen it and enjoyed it in its first form, the alterations are annoying and pointless and at the expense of the original total experience.

The original version was closer to 100 minutes in length. A few examples of the differences: the hospital scene was longer giving it more continuity; the interplay between the two cops in the supermarket was extended; there was a birthday party for the Bologna character's son, during which the cops discussed further their caper; classical violin music played during the entire bowling alley segment (which also had a few more scenes to it), almost to the point to where it was difficult to hear the dialogue; the final ending scene was the funeral for the Mafia chief, with a repeated slow camera pan of the faces of the mourners as the music played, not a still shot of the Bologna character floating in the pool.

Movies like this don't always appeal to a broad audience. However, once released, they shouldn't be tampered with for the sake of garnering a few more viewers. It's accepted practice (unfortunately) to heavily edit the content, format and length of movies for network television broadcast. But why would a studio release the television version on VHS and, especially, DVD? This is the format people buy to get the real McCoy - and hopefully more.

5 out of 5 stars Back In the Day.......2006-07-04

For someone that has been a NYPD COP BUFF since I was twelve, this movie is the HOLY GRAIL. Not only is it funny, it is New York funny.Make that NYPD-pre-Goodfellas Italian-American funny.
The look and dialogue are priceless. As the bad guys get away, Police Officer Joe Bologna tells his young partner..."WHO CARES!"
RIP, costar Cliff Gorman...Many NYC based actors.
One major flaw? In the last scenes the green/white/black old color scheme NYPD RMP.."Radio Motor Patrol.." Police Car changes at least 3 times..Since you are looking at the color you don't notice the bad editing but who cares?
If you love the NYPD and the 1970's NYC, you will love this movie..
OK..Mr. Eastpool?

4 out of 5 stars A clever, entertaining film!.......2005-06-05

I remember seeing this one on TV way back in the 1980's. It was a film, while not anywhere near the level of film making of say "The Godfather" or "Apocalypse Now", is still one of my favorite movies from the 1970's. But I'll admit that nostalgia also factors into this review (one extra star).

Cops And Robbers is the story about two New York City cops: Joe and Tom, who are jaded, cynical, and tired on playing it straight, living paycheck to paycheck on their meager policeman's salaries. Joe and Tom talk about how things are tough and that how everybody is a crook. They want to live on "easy street". Live the good life. Now. In fact the film opens up with Joe (Joseph Bologna) robbing a liquor store.

Joe confesses to his partner and friend, Tom (Cliff Gorman) about the robbery, Tom feeling the same way about things as Joe, wants in on the next one. They want to do a big job, to do a fantastic score, to accomplish their goal of being wealthy and being able to provide for their families. But how to do this?

A mobster and fence Pasquale "Patsy" Aniello (John P. Ryan) is taken to the precinct (for questioning[?]) where both Tom and Joe work. Tom eavesdrops on the interview of Patsy by a police detective. He hears Patsy say that he is a "salesman", that he "buys" and "sells" things.

Tom then (with Joe outside in disguise) approaches Patsy with the idea to do a crime for a price of $2 million dollars. Patsy, a little suspicious, decides to do business with the two and tells them to steal securities, treasury bonds, bearer bonds with no name on them. To steal about $10 million dollars worth. Bring them back to him and they will get $2 million cash.

Will Joe and Tom be successful? Will the mob give them their ticket to easy street - $2 million dollars? Or will the mob take both the bonds AND their lives instead?

This film was made back in 1973. And it shows. The fashions, the hairstyles, watch for Joe Spinell's (The Godfather I and II, Maniac) shirt and hairdo! You see the cops using not computers to take down information, but using typewriters! The buses, the cars, everything is a time capsule from those days.

Grady Tate (Schoolhouse Rock) lends his voice and does a fine job with the song "Cops And Robbers". One thing I believe is unfortunate is that the film is shown in full screen, not widescreen. I personally would have enjoyed the film more if it had been shown in widescreen. The editing and the general quality of the film look good to me. There is a little color bleed in a scene where both Tom and Joe are in a supermarket and a florescent sign comes into the frame. But this is minor. The overall picture quality of this transfer is good. The sound, although mono, is good, too. As for extras, the original movie trailer is included with the DVD.

I have read the reviews on this site regarding the VHS version of Cops And Robbers. About the bad editing, speeded up film, etc. But I don't see it here. The editing seems correct, cohesive and tells the story properly. All the characters talk in a regular tone.

There is one question in my mind about this film's ending. Now, I don't want to spoil it for anyone looking to purchase this film, so I won't go into detail about the ending of the film, But I'll say if my memory serves me correctly, I remember a slightly different ending than the one shown on this DVD.

Oh well, maybe I have it wrong, I really don't remember (again, the last time I saw this movie was back in the 80's).

This is a very good 70's New York movie, though. The acting by Cliff Gorman and Joseph Bologna is good (as well as everyone else). There are some laughs, seeing Joe and Tom's interaction with people who are concerned only with themselves was funny. And there is suspense when they finally make their move and try and get the bonds. As well as when they deal with the mob also. John P. Ryan (Its Alive, Runaway Train) is also great as Pasquale "Patsy" Aniello.

If you are into 70's films, or films that take place in New York City, I recommend this DVD.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING.......2004-08-31

This is NOT the movie based upon the wonderful Westlake novel "Cops and robbers". Indeed, the move that arrived was titled "Cops ARE robbers".

Oh, and it was a lousy film too.

3 out of 5 stars Such a Shame..........2002-01-09

This is one of my all-time favorite films. I waited years and years for it to come out in video, only to find out that the VHS version was the same version that had been unmercifully edited for commercial TV. I agree with the disappointment expressed by a previous reviewer, and can only hope that the complete version (with its exquisite ending) will be included if and when it comes out on DVD. That would be worth five stars to me!

3 out of 5 stars Beverly returns as the plucky Casey Jones..........2006-08-15

The second volume of thrill-packed episodes from DECOY, the gritty crime series starring B-movie veteran Beverly Garland as streetwise cop Casey Jones. DECOY only enjoyed a brief run of one full season on television, but the performances and scripts perfectly encapsulated the role of female law-enforcers in the big city and Beverly Garland is a formidable presence as Casey, full of dignity and pathos.

This DVD from Alpha Video Classics includes the following episodes:

"The Comeback" - A racetrack teller's life is threatened by his knowledge of a dangerous counterfeit betting ticket-ring. Guest-starring Peter Falk.

"Ghost of Van Gogh" - A manipulative artist forces a young painter to create forgeries of famous art pieces.

"Tin Pan Payoff" - When a popular songwriter is murdered, a disgruntled demo singer becomes the prime suspect.

"Blind Date" - Casey has her work cut out for her when two women are found with a suitcase containing over $100.000, and neither can remember where it came from.
