A minor classic from Disney, this 1973 all-animal, all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect. Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, "Aw, Rob, why dontcha just marry the girl?" (Then, of course, there's the canny "casting" of the romantic leads as foxes: Robin the sly one and Marian the, well, foxy one.) The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic: Peter Ustinov, Andy Devine, Terry-Thomas, George Lindsey. Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale. The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, whose decades of work in Disney's animation division helped create the studio's rich legacy. --Tom Keogh

Brought back childhood memories!.......2007-09-12
I grew up watching this movie with childhood friends from church. When I got the dvd in the mail, I emailed all my friends and told them that we need to get together for a Robin Hood reunion. (Note that this review was written in 2007 and all of my friends and I are now age 24-30.) Anyway, it was surprising how all of us sang along to songs we hadn't heard on over 15-20 years. Great movie! It brought back a lot of good childhood memories.
One of the Best Disney Creations.......2007-07-09
Robin hood is Disney at its best in the classic animation style. The voices for the characters are perfect. Great story line, and wonderfully done.
Ooo Da Lolly.......2007-05-24
Love this movie since my son was little. Now his son is loving it too!
our favorite!.......2007-05-16
This is our favorite Disney movie. We both grew up watching the Video, so it's fun to see our boys watching the DVD and hearing the fun songs again.
Robin Hood DVD.......2007-05-08
It came in a timely manner! I really appreciate how easy the whole transaction was!

There are plenty of belly laughs in The Mel Brooks Collection, an eight-disc set of most of the director-writer-actor's best-known films. Four of them--Silent Movie, High Anxiety, To Be or Not to Be, and Robin Hood: Men with Tights--are making their debut on DVD, while a fifth, The Twelve Chairs, was briefly available as a non-anamorphic DVD from Image Entertainment (all the DVDs in this set are anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs). That means you can sample a 23-year stretch of Brooks's outrageous and affectionate spoofing of everything from movies to popular legends to movies to historical figures to, hey! more movies.
The earliest film, The Twelve Chairs (1970), is the least known, but is one of the funniest, helped greatly by a good story (adapted from a 1920s Russian tale) and the casting of Ron Moody and Frank Langella as treasure hunters. Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles followed in 1974. The former, a spoof of horror films, is easily one of the top two or three funniest movies of all time, and the latter is justly famous for its often-tasteless send-up of Western cliches. Silent Movie (1976) is just what the title describes, with its only word of dialogue spoken from the least-likely source, and High Anxiety (1977) pays tribute to the work of Alfred Hitchcock. History of the World, Part 1 (1981) mocks historical events and epics, and To Be or Not to Be (1983) is a remake of Ernst Lubitsch's 1942 classic of the same name (it's also the only film in the set for which Brooks didn't receive writing and directing credit). By this time, Brooks was more actively taking the leading roles himself (rather than the bit parts), and unfortunately relying less on his topnotch ensemble of recurring players, which included Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman, and Dom Deluise. But he does use a new ensemble (including Cary Elwes and, in his film debut, Dave Chappelle), for Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), the feature-length spin on the same hero Brooks had spoofed in his short-lived 1975 television series When Things Were Rotten.
Bonus features are minor. In addition to an HBO featurette on Men in Tights, there's a featurette and interviews on To Be or Not to Be and all the features (Brooks commentary, deleted scenes, interviews, etc.) that were on the original release of Young Frankenstein. Note that while rights issues kept The Producers, Spaceballs, and other films out of this set, 20th Century Fox was able to use Warner Bros.' Blazing Saddles. The features on that disc, however, are the ones that were on the 1997 DVD release, not the 2004 anniversary reissue. Regardless, the set's price for this many films is low, and because it has so many films new to DVD, Brooks fans will want to pick this up faster than they can say... "Frau Blücher!" --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
Great collection from the greatest Mel.......2007-09-16
Mel Brooks is to me the most greatest comediant of the last 40 years. From the creation of "Get Smart", till the great Broadway "The Producers", Mel's work has been magnificent. From the collection, I should have changed "Robin Hood" for "Spaceballs". But even this doesn't change my rate. Enjoy an have lots of fun.
Mel...Mel...Mel.......2007-08-29
Includes 8 of Mel Brooks Classics in this Collection. Each Movie is a true classic and is a good addition to anyones DVD Movie collection. We purchased these for our Homeowners Association Library so that we can show them on the weekly movie night by the pool or in the clubhouse. Everyone enjoys them too.
Surprisingly good.......2007-08-14
I acquired this collection in order to acquaint the kids with the Mel Brooks style of humor. His ideas hold up to the test of time remarkably well. We were especially surprised by To Be or Not to Be - a film we were not aware of, and one which every theatre lover will enjoy. Mel is particularly good in this story about a couple of Polish actors surviving the Nazi occupation. In other films, Mel's subversive ironies still sound fresh. Ignore the puerile jokes and the way the pacing drags at times. In the history of cinematic comedy, Mel ranks way up there.
mel brooks.......2007-07-13
I found that some of the scenes were missing from some of the movies...seem like a cheap bootleg copy...very disappointed.
Classic Comedy.......2007-06-15
These movies are non-stop fun. If you like classic, musical style comedy then these are the films for you. I have seen quite a few of the Mel Brooks movies before I bought this set, but what surprised me were the entertainment value of the movies that I hadn't watched before. High Anxiety and To Be or Not to Be are more coherent than the famous Mel Brooks movies and that makes them great films if you want some light comedy. Enjoy!

It's not Blazing Saddles, but there are some chuckles to be found in Mel Brooks's 1993 spoof of the Robin Hood legend. Cary Elwes is Robin (with a lighthearted jab at Kevin Costner's bad English accent in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), while Richard Lewis plays an angst-ridden King John, and Roger Rees a snotty Sheriff of Nottingham. Comic David Chappelle has some good moments as the only black member of Robins's noble thieves, and Brooks does his own spin on Friar Tuck: Rabbi Tuchman. The song-and-dance sequences featuring a chorus line of the Merry Men ("We're men / men in tights") is vintage Brooks, but otherwise the film can't get any traction. --Tom Keogh
Description
Cary Elwes stars as Robin Hood, the dashing defender of the down-trodden, who along with his merry men and Maid Marion, resides in Sherwood Forest. There they have become together to fight against the seriously neurotic Prince John, the not quite-evil Sheriff of Rottingham, and the mad scorceress Latrine.

Never get tire of Mel Brooks .......2007-09-01
I have all of his stuff. How he uses today's phrases in yesteryear comedy is truely funny.
Wanted to walk out within 10 minutes.......2007-08-24
Unfortunately, I saw this movie in the theater and paid good money to do so. I have never wanted to walk out of a movie so much in my life, this was HORRIBLE! Bad acting by actors and comedians who are trying really hard to make a bad script sound funny. Mel Brooks is really a hit or miss director. Some of his works are really hilarious, others have their moments and then there was this one. The only line I found funny in the entire movie was the line shown in the trailers ". . . only one that can speak with a proper english accent" or whatever. I can't understand why so many people actually gave this 5 stars but everyone is free to form their own opinions.
Brooks At His Best.......2007-08-23
When it comes to Mel Brooks, he has made some of the best movies in the industry. Since the 1960's his films have brought laughter and joy to many delightful hearts. Although his career had cooled off in the 1990's, the laughs from films like Young Frankenstein and Blazzing Saddles kept coming. That also could be said with one of the best parodied tales ever, Robin Hood. What he had brought was a film worth laughing to all the merry little hearts content. Although he hasn't made anything breathtaking since, it is work checking out those funny merry men in tights.
Robin Hood: Men In Tights, was Mel brooks 1993 delightful and overjoyed parody of the tales of Robin Hood. The film stars Cary Elwes as Robin of Loxly, and his return to Sherwood Forest, where he finds out his possessions have been stolen courtesy of Prince John played by the funny comedian Richard Lewis. Along the way he meets great friends to join him like Blincoln, a blind servant of Robin's, Achoo, and Little John. Along the way, he falls in love with Maid Marian and does whatever he promises to save the forest from heartache. There are so many great scenes I've loved from the movie including the archery contest, where Robin gets a second chance shot, using a patriot arrow that actually gets the crowd into a wave, and then destroys the bulls-eye, and another great moment during the film where the merry men do a dance scene song & dance Men In Tights which was just funny and silly. The twists brings a unique joy that hasn't been duplicated from any Robin Hood remake since, and still shows why Mel Brooks is one of the best kings of comedy.
All in all, if you haven't seen Robin Hood: Men In Tights, you really are missing out on a very funny and exciting movie. It is just a wonderful comedy that still clicks nearly 15 years after it was made. I love watching this film so much, and I think it is one of the best movies ever. It is too bad Mel Brooks hasn't made anything this good in awhile. I hope he does.

Mel Brooks at His Best.......2007-07-05
For anyone who hasn't or has seen the 'original' Robin Hood, this parody is still entertaining beyond all reason. Men in Tights is definitely one of Mel Brooks's best, and it is sad that this movie seems to have slipped away from public recognition.
Either you like it or not.......2007-07-03
Personally, I didn't care for it. In my opinion, it started to show potientialseveral times but still kept letting me down. I watched it 3 times to make sure I wasn't missing anything and then gave it away. I rated it a 4 because I'm sure some folks will like it and the DVD arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

Kevin Costner's lousy English accent is a small obstacle in this often exciting version of the Robin Hood fable. That aside, it's refreshing to have a preface to the old story in which we meet the robber hero of Sherwood Forest as a soldier in King Richard's Crusades, coming home to find his people under siege from the cruelties of the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman). After Robin and his community of outcasts and fighters take to the trees, director Kevin Reynolds (Fandango, 187) is on more familiar narrative ground, and he goes for the gusto with lots of original action (Robin shoots two arrows simultaneously from his bow in two directions). Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as Marion, makes a convincing damsel in distress, and Morgan Freeman brings dignity to his role as Robin's Moor friend. Alan Rickman, however, gets the most attention for his scene-chewing role as the rotten sheriff, an almost campy performance that is highly entertaining but perhaps a little out of sorts with the rest of the film. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A great feel good movie all round!.......2007-09-13
I love this film, always have... when I saw it was being released again I knew I had to buy it, as the first time it was released you had to flip the DVD in the middle of the film. This one not only gives you the entire film on one DVD, but also includes about 15 minutes of new footage, along with a 2nd Special Feature disc. To be honest the 'new' footage I can see why it was cut out, but the story is still one I love. Every time this is on you can't help to join in and root for Robin Hood. Stellar cast!
Great movie...weird format.......2007-09-05
The most notable thing about this product isn't the movie or special features, but the arrangement of items on the disk. It's a two -sided DVD, which is fine. But what's weird is, instead of putting the movie on one side and the special features on the other, they put the special features on side one with half of the movie. The movie actually stops half way through and instructs you to flip it over so you can finish watching it!! This is definitely a major downside. It's a great movie, so if you haven't seen it yet, I would strongly suggest watching it at some point. But if you're planning on buying it, you might want to wait until a different DVD version comes out, so that you can avoid having to get up in the middle of your movie to flip it over.
PASS!PASS!PASS!.......2007-07-27
I wont bore you with the details...suffice it to say that it was a let down in every sense of the word. View at your own risk....of falling asleep. Its better than Ambien.
Costner is the real Robin Hood.......2007-07-15
I have watched this movie a hundred times - used to use it to fall asleep by every night while going through a rough time - wanted to swing thru the trees in Sherwood Forest with Robin Hood & forget about the rest of the world - Kevin Costner is absolutely fabulous as the Prince of Thieves - would love to be his Marion
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.......2007-05-14
Charming love story with a good bit of humor built in. Kevin Costner is perfect for the part of Robin Hood. Not only is he gorgeous, but you truly believe that he's capable of being that hero that Robin Hood was.

Dashing Errol Flynn is the definitive Robin Hood in the most gloriously swashbuckling version of the legendary story. Warner Brothers reunited Michael Curtiz, their top-action director, with the winning team of Flynn and Olivia de Havilland (Maid Marian) and perennial villain Basil Rathbone as the aristocratic Sir Guy of Gisbourne, and pulled out all stops for the production. It became their costliest film to date, a grandly handsome, glowing Technicolor adventure set to a stirring, Oscar-winning score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The decadent Prince John (a smoothly conniving Claude Rains) takes advantage of King Richard's absence to tax the country into poverty but meets his match in the medieval guerrilla rebel Robin Hood and his Merry Men of Sherwood Forest, who rise up and, to quote a cliché coined by the film, "steal from the rich and give to the poor." Stocky Alan Hale Sr. plays Robin's loyal friend Little John (a part he played in Douglas Fairbanks's silent version), Eugene Palette the portly Friar Tuck, and Melville Cooper the bumbling Sheriff of Nottingham. Flynn's confidence and cocky charm makes for a perfect Robin Hood, and his easygoing manner is a marvelous counterpoint to Rathbone's regal bearing and courtly diction. The film climaxes in their rousing battle-to-the-finish sword fight, a magnificently choreographed scene highlighted by Curtiz's inventive use of shadows cast upon the castle walls. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Errol Flynn is eternally charming as Robin, defender of the poor, in this rousing family adventure that co-stars Olivia de Havilland and Claude Rains. Year: 1938 Director: Michael Curtiz, William Keighley Starring: Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, Alan Hale
Customer Reviews:
SWASHBUCKLING CLASSIC.......2007-08-12
Want real movie magic and great old star power? This gorgeous classic has it all in spades. Errol Flynn exudes charisma and swaggering confidence as Robin, easily showing why he's simply one of the greatest movie stars of all time. And he's backed by a who's who of Warner's star roster, with Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains as the personification of ruling class reptillian villainy! And it's all in lucious technicolor with a rousing musical score. An all time classic, beautifully restored for DVD.
It don't get no better........2007-08-09
This is Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland at their best and frankly, in my opinion, Hollywood at its best. Just a great escape and a lot of fun -- well-acted and well-directed. Beautiful, opulent sets and clothing. A pure delight!
Memo to Warner Brothers: Put this on the big screen for 70th.......2007-07-20
One of the best movies ever made for all the reasons so well written by other reviewers. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see this film on the big screen in honor of its 70th anniversary? If it can be done for for "Dirty Dancing," why not for a film that is a part of American film history and a joy to watch? I think the studios (including Disney)are missing a great opportunity in not re-releasing films as they once did. I remember seeing GWTW in the late 60s, the first "Star Wars" trilogy and "Grease" in the late 90s. This film is wonderful on DVD, but it would honor all who made it and contemporary audiences to show it again in theaters. Think of all the horrible films in theaters between the Oscars and the summer blockbusters.
Some one at Warners- please!
Most Loved Movie.......2007-06-15
"The Adventures of Robin Hood" still comes across as fresh and entertaining almost 70 years after its release. It was nominated for Best Picture in 1938. Carl Jules Weyl won the Oscar for the film for Best Art Direction. The delightful look of the Nottingham Palace with the high stone walls creates the perfect period atmosphere. Ralph Dawson won the Oscar for Best Editing for the film. Some of the film sequences are astonishing. The scene where the whole hall breaks into sword fight has a continual clink of crashing swords as the camera shifts from duel to duel. Erich Wolfgang's score won the other Oscar for which the picture was nominated.
Errol Flynn's career is legendary as an action hero. He was never nominated for an Oscar. His personal life, particularly the statutory charges from 1942 that earned him the phrase "in like Flynn" could have wrecked a smaller star's career, but Flynn kept going. He's probably in his quintessential moment as Robin Hood, flashing smiles, romantic sparks flying with Maid Marian and his constant good humor. It's hard not to root for a hero like Robin.
I particularly like Patric Knowles as his sidekick Will Scarlet. From the costuming that places him in brilliant red to match his character name, Knowles flashes the smile, never stealing the spotlight, but always ready to fly to Robin's defense. Knowles had a long film career that included some gems like "Expensive Husbands" & "A Bill of Divorcement," but he shined brightly in this action adventure.
Olivia deHaviland plays Marian Fitzwalter, better known as Maid Marian. The costumer highlights her face in blues & lavenders. She radiates incredible charm & grace. The scene where she stands before Prince John and declares her disgust with his actions shows steel in her her feminine character. Olivia won two Oscars for "To Each His Own" in 1946 & "The Heiress" in 1949. Her role as Marian was believable. Her loving looks let you know that Robin was one lucky man.
Eugene Pallette plays Friar Tuck. This actor had an amazing career, acting in over 180 films! His resume lists some true classics like 1916's "Intolerance," the ghostly "Topper" from 1937, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" in 1939 & "Heaven Can Wait" in 1943. As the portly Friar Tuck, his swordfight scene with Robin is both entertaining and hilarious. He had a voice that sounded like a gravel road, but he was one of the actors that flourished in both the silent and sound eras.
Alan Hale Sr. who played Little John also had an amazing film career spanning from 1912 to 1950. His films include silent era "The Prisoner of Zenda" from 1913 to "The Inspector General" in 1949. As Little John, his burly build and contagious good humor makes him an ideal fit for Robin's band of Merry Men.
Our two main villains are both played by notable actors. As Prince John, Claude Rains is an underhanded two-faced back-stabber. He was nominated four times as Best Supporting Actor including for "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" in 1939 & "Casablanca" in 1943.
Basil Rathbone who many associate as Sherlock Holmes plays Sir Guy of Gisbourne and vows to apprehend Robin Hood. The scene where Robin captures his entourage, takes his money & sends him back in rags is (for the audience) a joyful humiliation. Rathbone was nominated for Best Supporting actor in If I Were King, a film based on the stage play by Justin Huntly McCarthy. He had also been nominated for a similar award in 1936 for "Romeo & Juliet." Neither Raines nor Rathbone ever won an Oscar, as good as they both were.
Two other actors deserve special mention. Ian Hunter played Richard the Lionheart who returns home in the nick of time to reclaim his throne. Hunter won an Oscar in 1953 for Best Original Screenplay for "Roman Holiday." Una O'Connor plays Lady Marian's attending maid Bess. Her clever comic barbs made her screen time sparkle. O'Connor was in many other films including "The Bells of St. Mary's" from 1945 & "Random Harvest" in 1942. Some may also be interested to note that the palomino horse Olivia deHaviland rides in Sherwood Forest later would be seen as Roy Rogers' Trigger.
The theme of Saxons and Normans getting along despite differences, the treatment of women, fairness in taxation and care for the poor give the film a thematic backbone. As we near the 70th anniversary of this film, it deserves its place as one of the most watched & loved of the era's movies. Enjoy!

Every generation gets the Robin Hood it deserves. After a dashing adventure (The Adventures of Robin Hood), a ponderous retelling (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), spoofs (Mel Brooks' When Things Were Rotten and Robin Hood: Men in Tights), and even a cartoon (Disney's Robin Hood), this thoroughly modern 2006 BBC series brings cheeky wit, exuberant action, and fierce fencing and special effects-enhanced archery to the party. Scruffy Robin (Jonas Armstrong) returns home from the Crusades war-weary and "changed." But when he finds the countryside under the taxing grip of the brutal (he crushes birds with his bare hands!) Sheriff (Keith Allen) and his glowering lieutenant, Guy of Gisbourne (Richard Armitage), he takes up his bow and arrow against the injustice.
Series 1 depicts how Robin of Locksley becomes "Robin of the Wood" and then "Robin Hood," robbing from the rich and, well, you know the drill. "The peasants' hero," this Robin is a tad vainer than previous screen incarnations. As his former servant and wisecracking sidekick Much (Sam Troughton, who can be a bit much himself), observes, Robin likes to linger after his good deeds to see the looks of gratitude. Marian (Lucy Griffiths) is another revelation. The daughter of Nottingham's former sheriff, she doesn't exactly welcome Robin back with open arms. "Five years and you're still peddling the same drivel," she says after he spouts some romantic tripe. A formidable fighter and champion of justice herself, she has a surprising moonlighting gig best not revealed here. We also see the gathering of Robin's men (none call them "merry"), including hulking Little John (Gordon Kennedy), Allan-a-Dale (Joe Armstrong), and Will Scarlett (Harry Lloyd). Beautifully filmed in Hungary (what; England was booked?), Robin Hood is mostly grand escapist adventure, but there are unnerving scenes of violence that raise the stakes. In one episode, a peasant who won't reveal Robin's whereabouts has his tongue cut out, (mercifully offscreen). In another, a child is the victim of a sniper's arrow. . Robin Hood takes liberties with the oft-told story of the legendary folk hero, but it's so well played and rousingly entertaining, few should mind. --Donald Liebenson

Count me in with these Merry Men.......2007-09-13
This Robin Hood is a lark that I enjoy watching with my pre-teen son. Most of the episodes have the near perfect blend of action and great performances, and one of the few really interesting triangle of Robin, Marion and Guy. All of the main characters are exceptionally well cast, though I have to say that I really enjoy Jonas Armstrong as Robin and Richard Armitage as Guy of Gisborne. I had never seen either actor before this, and I think they will both move on to be MAJOR stars and will be giving Clive Owen and Ewan McGregor a run for their money on the big screen soon. Joe Armstrong as Allan a Dale and Harry Lloyd as Will Scarlett have also grown on me with their much smaller parts... Allan contributes the needed bit of humor and Will is the "conscience" in the band, managing to convey all of what is unsaid in one look or one word. I thought Lucy Griffiths was a little stiff in the beginning episodes, but her Marion grew on me by the end. Although it occasionally throws in a few things that keep it from being completely family friendly (the sheriff is joking one minute then has someone's tongue cut off with scissors??) One or two of the episodes dragged a bit, but all in all I enjoyed every minute of my time in Sherwood and can't wait for Season 2. My biggest complaint? Why does all of the good stuff from the BBC cost so much?
Kinder, gentler, PC Robin Hood.......2007-09-04
This offering from BBC Video is quite possibly the worst Robin Hood ever. The legend has been rewritten to serve as political commentary (i.e., propaganda) disguised as an action series. Robin and his men are terrorists according to the Sheriff who is also fond of prattling on about the need for law and order and etc., etc., etc. Marion's character is also appropriately updated to allow her to have a role in the fighting. And speaking of the fighting, the scenes more resemble the rumbles between the Sharks and the Jets in West Side Story than medieval combat. As if all this were not bad enough, we also have shallow characters and poor acting. All things considered, this telling of Robin Hood is disappointing and one to avoid unless they pay you to watch it.
Excellent Adventure!!.......2007-08-17
I was so excited when I got this DVD!! I wanted to see it so bad! And I wasn't disappointed, this series is awesome! The acting may be a little quirky, but it is like watching a 13 episode long movie! It has that great quality that we look for in a tv series. I also enjoy the lead actor as Robin Hood, he adds the perfect mixture of arrogance and being a hero. If you enjoy the time frame then you'll enjoy this and the way they add a little modern twist to the costumes and scenes. It also helps that the actors are younger, making the story more appealing to the young demographic! Im definately happy that I made the choice to get into this series, and hopefully will get to see season 2! Long live Robin Hood!
Can't Wait for Season 2.......2007-08-07
I checked this out after being knocked out by Richard Armitage's performance in "North & South," (along with a million or so other women). And he does not disappoint in this series, playing Guy of Gisborne as a creepy but complex baddie with something of an inner life and gobs of menacing sex appeal. But the story, of course, revolves around Robin Hood, and Jonas Armstrong is just great, so perfect for the part. He looks like sort of a skinny backpacker dude, but he fills out this major role with tons of heart, guts, and charm.
What did surprise me is that I really liked every single member of the rest of the cast and actually started to care about these characters. Great that Lucy Griffiths plays Marian as a strong, thoughtful woman who can hold her own among all these guys. (Same goes for Anjali Jay as Djaq.) Keith Allen as the sheriff reminded me of a sort of mobbed-up London drug dealer, and then I realized that I had seen him playing more or less exactly that role in "Trainspotting," an interesting way to go with this traditional bad-guy character. He clearly relishes playing this part.
I found most of the episodes to be exciting and interesting, and the last two are real stunners. Excellent soundtrack. There's a lot of funky wardrobe in this show, and it quickly becomes obvious that these are deliberate choices. They are clearly not going for historical accuracy, and after a while it is fun picking out the Birkenstocks and camouflage combat pants. And I do like the not-terribly-subtle political messages about torture, imprisonment, insurgencies, PTSD, and so on.
Can't quite give it five stars, but this is really an enjoyable romp, with lots more going for it than just plenty of eye candy for the ladies. There are also lots of extras sprinkled throughout the discs, and the audio commentaries are hilarious.
Great Clean Fun, a creative and modern version of Robin Hood.......2007-07-30
This is a great series. I nice new look on the classic tale of Robin Hood. The acting is great, especially that of Keith Allen. It is a pretty corny show, but if you don't let that bother you it is a very enjoyable show. It is clean, funny, and action packed. A truly creative look on the story of Robin Hood. This is probably my favorite version of Robin Hood yet.

An epic and extraordinary true story--or, at least, an extraordinary story based on a novel (Alan Burgess's The Small Woman) based on a true story. Gladys Aylward (an improbably mesmerizing Ingrid Bergman) is a British would-be missionary with an obsession about China. As she has no experience, the Missionary Society won't let her go, but she goes anyway, alone, to a remote northern province. She is hated, then loved; finally she becomes both a significant political figure and the heroine of a miraculous escape in which she shepherds 100 children to safety across the mountains just ahead of a Japanese invasion. Curt Jurgens is suitably stony as Lin Nan, the half-Dutch, half-Chinese military officer who falls in love with her, and a visibly ailing Robert Donat (who died before this, his final film, was released) is the wily local mandarin who sees and makes use of her extraordinary abilities. Directed by Mark Robson, The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is a sweeping, stirring tearjerker, a big tale told in a big landscape with acres of orchestrated strings by Malcolm Arnold. A beautiful and beautifully made film that's a classic of the "everyone said I couldn't but I did it anyway" genre. --Richard Farr
Description
All her life Englishwoman Gladys Aylward knew that China was the place where she belonged. Not qualified to be sent there as a missionary, Gladys works as a domestic to earn the money to send herself to a poor, remote village. There she eventually lives a full and happy life: running the inn, acting as "foot inspector", advising the local Mandarin and even winning the heart of mixed race Captain Lin Nan. But Gladys discovers her real destiny when the country is invaded by Japan and the Chinese children need her to save their lives. Based on a true story.
Customer Reviews:
Very good movie..........2007-08-03
but not a very true story of Gladys. Ingrid Bergman does a great job in this movie. Too bad the movie is way off base about the real missionary.
Inn of the sixth happiness.......2007-07-18
Movie just as good as I remember it.Love Ingrid Bergman, they don't make movies like that anymore. Great quality dvd and in excellent condition.
Gayle R.Donham.......2007-06-28
This was a movie about the human will to survive through war torn countries with a group of children in a school. After a period of time the war begins to worsen and she leads the children out of the country and into safety through many odds along the way.Outstanding actors in his movie.
Excellent missioary story.......2007-06-13
I have watched this video many times and I really am inspired each time. I bought it for a missionary friend and she was impressed as well. It is well acted and most interesting. It follows the book about Gladys Aylward fairly well but the book is also worth reading for more details on her life adventure.
Tops My List.......2007-06-12
This is one of my all time favorite movies and now on DVD I loved it all over again. Great actors and acting. Wonderful and inspiring story.

Before The Wild Bunch, there was The Professionals, Richard Brooks's marvelous ode to friendship, loyalty, and disillusionment. It may not have the stylistic bravado or fatalistic doom of the legendary Sam Peckinpah film, but Brooks's storytelling is simple and steady and just as insightful. The difference is Brooks is a lot more optimistic. Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster are buddies who have drifted into oblivion after fighting together in the Mexican Revolution. Marvin, the principled loyalist and munitions expert, lost his wife and his heart. Lancaster, the dynamite expert and unprincipled adventurer, keeps losing his pants. They team up with wrangler Robert Ryan and archer Woody Strode to rescue the beguiling Claudia Cardinale, who has been kidnapped by their old revolutionary buddie Jack Palance. So it's back into bloody Mexico they go on a "mission of mercy" for railroad tycoon Ralph Bellamy, who's paying handsomely for the return of his wife.
But nothing is what it seems in this exciting, existential adventure, which was beautifully shot by Conrad Hall. Sarcastic quips, philosophical musings, and heart-rending reversals underlie Brooks's humanistic sentiments. These are tired, world-weary men who somehow find the strength and the will to pull together for the sake of love and commitment. Through it all, Brooks seems to be lamenting a decline in professionalism much deeper than his story. He's decrying Hollywood and the society at large, anticipating Peckinpah's later strategy. --Bill Desowitz
Customer Reviews:
Why Not Ten Stars?.......2007-07-23
Oh, my, oh, my: where have the Westerns gone? This is a masterpiece of nonchalance. Everyone is so cool, you'd think they were going to freeze on screen. Remember when they used to churn out one little masterpiece after the other? Well, this is one of them, made years ago at a time when nobody even noticed. They didn't make $50m, just enough to pay for the next one. Here you have a fabulous cast: Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, and then, because God loves us all, Claudia Cardinale. It's an ensemble of the sort they put together nowadays for these $200m movies like "Oceans 11" - they probably made "The Professionals" for less than $1 million. This film is a wonder of ensemble acting, superb direction, great cinematography. The setting is fantastic: Mexico, with those great red and brown hues of desert land as far as the eye can see. Liberals have been denying that Hollywood ever harbored communists, but this film proves them wrong. This film is about as subversive as they come (which come to think of it, may be the reason you've never heard of it). Ralph Bellamy plays a classic American movie bags type who wants to destroy the Mexican revolutionary who has stolen his gal. The 'boys' have been offered a king's ransom to bring her home, only the guys can't bring themselves to support the rich capitalist, so they take the revolutionary's side instead. This is the sort of film Joe McCarthy was trying to prevent. Well, win some, lose some, as they saying goes. This is a big win for film lovers, because this one has it all; communist or capitalist, you can't knock great acting and great story-telling.
The Professionals.......2007-07-02
Brooks's self-penned, high-energy Western, set in the waning years of the Mexican Revolution in 1917, is as gritty and colorful a horse drama as you could ask for. The teaming of Marvin and Lancaster, playing Raza's disenchanted ex-amigos, works brilliantly, while Strode and Ryan offer fine support as talented sidekicks. Italian bombshell Cardinale, in her first English-speaking role, provides plenty of fiery va-va voom, too, especially in league with Palance's rough-riding Raza, who proves to be quite a romantic himself. Filmed on location in Nevada and enhanced by Conrad Hall's exquisite cinematography, "The Professionals" is a rousing, thoughtful action movie that deals with questions of money versus morality, and the last gasp of noble frontier idealism.
Men who will endure.......2007-06-21
Great, straight, linear narrative. Clear and uncluttered. Immaculate camera-work sweeping over a merciless terrain. Tough, rugged, dauntless men. Brave and beautiful women --- Claudia and Maria are worth far more than $100,000 each. No weirdos, no weeping (only a little female tear, quickly brushed away); and the only narcotics are traditional and ancient --- honest, old-fashioned hooch and cheroots. Do or die: with no foul language, a smattering of folksy truths and food for thought. All the twisty issues resolved the way they should be. Perfect dialogue, delivered with power and conviction. Just masterful, no-nonsense telling of an unusual story: a heist with a difference. At the end we know who the good guys are, and only the bad guy is a true bastard. This is nostalgia for the way it was, and what we could do with more of. Buy and digest at leisure. With pleasure.
The Professionals.......2007-01-06
Strong principal cast as well as supporting cast.Ruggard scenery and enternaining story line.
The Professionals - A classic that gets sweeter with age.......2006-12-30
The Professionals is a must have in any Western DVD based collection. Strong actors backing up a stout story that is filled with action, adventure and humor. Aside from that, its also strong in its portrayal in themes of friendship, trust and just flat out ironic consequences that are fueled by the common strands of greed and lies that often find themselves intertwined within stories stemming from the western genre.
Filmed in some parts of Death Valley in 1966, The Professionals is a story that takes place in 1917. A wealthy individual named Grant hires a group of men to rescue his kidnapped wife from a desperado named Raza. This particular group of men are mercenaries of sorts, each possessing a viable trade to apply in their mission, which, if successful, will garner each of them $10,000. Hollywood standout Lee Marvin plays Rico, a stalwart gunslinger that joins up along with a witty munitions expert named Bill Dolworth (played by Burt Lancaster). Robert Ryan plays horse trainer Hans Ehrengard and when you throw in a scout and longbow warrior in Jake Sharp (played by Woody Strode) you have all the ingredients for a team of men ready to take on the searing desert and all the dangers it can throw at them.
The movie is coaxed with fine dialogue that pushes the character development to another level. Some of the men once fought with Raza, and find it hard to believe that he would kidnap Grant's wife (played by the lovely Claudia Cardinale). Arguments abound on their trip as human nature battles instincts and logic all in a fine mesh of right and wrong, do or die battle plan. Setbacks abound as we follow the men to their destination with Raza. It won't be easy, the desert is grueling, and around every boulder and through every mountain pass, their problem solving skills as well as their sanity for what they are risking for the cash often comes into question.
Jack Palance plays Raza, and does so with the intensity and leadership that is required for such a character. Another plus about this movie is the ingenuity that is used throughout some of the fight scenes. There is much more substance to it in terms of "thinking" than simply having men alternate pot-shots at each other from across the face of a boulder.
When the showdown happens, there is a startling discovery that not everything is as it appears, and soon the group of men who are to take Grant's wife back to him are suddenly met with yet another obstacle to negotiate.
I'm not an expert when it comes to reviewing Western Classics, but I have to say I absolutely loved The Professionals. A superb story with great acting as well as an authentic desert landscape makes it a gem of a movie. The special features section of the DVD is also fun as we get to go behind the scenes and listen to interviews with the cast and learn more about the efforts of fine filmmaking that made "The Professionals" a Western Classic.

I have seen this movie many times in various formats...including 16mm and 35mm film. I will skip the review...we all know this is one of the greatest swashbuckler/action/adventure/love stories ever made. Check out any movie review book if need be. I prefer to focus on the fact that I have never seen it look this good. Minute details jump out at you so effortlessly that you'll think you are there. The Technicolor photography is breathtaking. This is a must have in every collection. Casablanca too. Hats off to Warner Brothers for giving the HD early adopters the best they have. I can't wait for Citizen Kane and Gone With The Wind.
Great HD-DVD.......2007-08-11
I own this title on laserdisc and DVD. I was not sure if it could look any better since the movie is almost 70 years old. The answer is yes. I played the DVD version and the HD-DVD and you will see the difference. The colors are very vivid on HD-DVD...Robin Hood's tights are sharp green. The sound is not that great, but that is understandable. The extras are really good too, including the Merrie Melodies shorts. Considering that this movie was released in 1938, I am still amazed with the image and color quality of this film.
The original Hood.......2007-06-14
Even though this movie from 1938 is in a 4 X 3 format rather than wide screen, it is still worth buying. The colors are very vivid and high definition makes it seem like your are there.
Get it just for the Extras.......2007-02-18
This is one cracking good film, and a superb transfer to HD DVD. The picture quality of the Technicolor transfer is jaw dropping. But what makes this disc even more special are the amazing extras. The special features include two documentaries, short films and cartoons, a dozen trailers for Flynn films such as Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk, and a Warner Night at the Movies feature.
Leonard Maltin's Warner Night at the Movies 1938 is a real time capsule, which recreates a full evening's movie programme of the time. In includes a vintage newsreel, musical short with Freddie Rich and His Orchestra performing several big band numbers, Katnip College cartoon, and a trailer for Angels with Dirty Faces (for any James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart or Ann Sheridan fans).
The real gems are the two documentaries, around 1 hour each, both of which are worth the price of this disc alone...
'Welcome to Sherwood: The Story of The Adventures of Robin Hood' presented by film historian Rudy Behlmer, Leonard Maltin and others features extensive interviews and archival footage of the production, cast and crew.
'Glorious Technicolor' plots the development of the Technicolor film process from beginning to end. It not only provides a great insight to the science, but features clips of the production process for some of the all time great movies such as Gone With the Wind, Red Shoes, Wizard of Oz, etc. It also includes color screen tests for a who's who of Hollywood stars of the 1930's and 40's - Ingrid Bergman, Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis, Betty Grable, Maureen O'Hara and more. For any fan of the golden age of Hollywood this disc is a must have.
The one and only Robin Hood of the movies. . ........2007-02-16
Mr. Errol never looked better in sharp green tights!

Product Description
Director Michael Ritchie and Chevy Chase team up once again for FLETCH LIVES, with Chase reprising the role of Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher, newspaper journalist and master of disguise. When his recently deceased aunt bequeaths her decrepit manor to him, Fletch travels down south to rural Louisiana. Initially, things go well, especially when he hooks up with a flirtatious southern belle. But when he wakes up the morning after, he's shocked to find that she has been murdered. In order to catch the killers and clear himself, the intrepid, chameleon-like Fletch must infiltrate the congregation of Jimmy Lee Farnsworth (R. Lee Ermey), a greedy local preacher who wants to gain control of Fletch's land in order to build a Bible-themed amusement park. Written by Leon Capetanos, FLETCH LIVES crackles with the same blend of rapid-fire dialogue and visual jokes as the original.

Before his movie career completely tanked, Chevy Chase made one of the few films that gave him a chance to display his comic versatility: 1985's Fletch, the Michael Ritchie-directed comedy about an investigative reporter who specializes in going undercover on big stories. Lightning, however, didn't strike twice when Ritchie and Chase went back to Gregory MacDonald's novels for a second helping. This sequel features Chase once again as Fletch, super-reporter, who heads from L.A. to the South, where he supposedly has inherited an estate. Before long, he's become involved in a murder plot and is trying to stay out of the killer's sights himself. The material is considerably weaker, revealing Chase's shortcomings as an ad lib comic. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
Almost as Good as Fletch.......2007-04-11
Though the sequel isn't as laugh-packed as "Fletch", it still has many great moments and always at the very least will be funnier than Hudson Hawk or for that matter Chevy's own "Funny Farm".
Great transaction. Thanks!.......2007-01-30
Fast delivery. Good packaging. Good deal. Need I say more.
Fletch Lives.... Fletch Laughs.......2007-01-09
I've enjoyed this movie every time I've watched it. I love Chevy Chases quick wit, subtle humor & facial expressions that keep you wanting more. Comedies these days are laden with extreme cursing & bad taste... Fletch is none of that! Good old fashioned FUNNY!
Fletch Lives on.......2007-01-04
The Fletch movies are some Chevy Chase's best work. The role is perfect for him and he brings the movie alive. I only wish there had been more then two movies.
In his next film, please wear more disguises!.......2006-09-30
I don't think I'd ever heard of Fletch before meeting my boyfriend, never mind Chevy Chase. Since then, I've had the opportunity to see some of the Chevy Chase films that he's best known for, but I still prefer the National Lampoon series. They're slightly more memorable. I consequently bought my boyfriend all the Fletch books by Gregory McDonald last Christmas or something. I finally relented and watched Fletch Lives, cos I was getting sick of the puppydog eyes.
Fletch Lives has Chevy Chase in a number of disguises, and all but one I recognised as being him. He's certainly one of those actors who can put on a totally different accent without any effort, and I applaud him for that, cos it's something I cannot do. It makes the characters more realistic, unlike certain actors who cannot put on a different accent no matter how much you pay them. But it still doesn't make me like Keanu Reeves any less.
Fletch discovers he's inherited a rather run down mansion down south, gives up his job, and moves down. Along the way he has daydreams along the lines of the Song Of The South movie (which I saw many, many years ago) and gets into a song & dance routine, probably spoofing Song Of The South? There's another mystery to be solved, when a woman he sleeps with, is dead by morning. Poor Fletch. Wonder what the real cause of it was?! :) He sets about solving the mystery.
I bought my boyfriend quite a few of the books, so it's a shame there's only been two films. There might even be more Gregory McDonald Fletch books out there, that I missed. There could have been a real film franchise there.
Fletch Lives is good, but is less memorable than the National Lampoon Vacation series, but still worth a watch.
