In A Change of Seasons, Christy returns to Cutter Gap with her adult daughter, Catherine, and narrates an episode in her life as a young schoolteacher. The story picks up where the PAX production, Return to Cutter Gap, left off. In this recollection, typhoid sweeps the region, and Christy's faith is tested when her best friend succumbs to the disease. Christy (Lauren Lee Smith), Alice (Diane Ladd), Dr. MacNeill (Stewart Finlay-McLennan), and David (James Waterston), the local preacher, do what they can to save the rest of the inflicted, but they can only do so much. Towards the end, Christy gets engaged to one of the men, but then he contracts the disease. Fortunately, he recovers, but things end on an ambiguous note as Christy appears to have lost the friendship of the man whose affections she spurned. This dilemma will be resolved in A New Beginning. Ages 8 and older. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Christy-A Change of Seasons.......2007-09-11

Another great part of an excellent series of decent, moral, and family-friendly movies. I would highly recommend any of the Christy movies. These movies are taken from the book "Christy" by: Catherine Marshall, who was a strong Christian woman, who stood up for her faith in Jesus Christ.

1 out of 5 stars Christy - A Change of Seasons.......2007-06-11

As I had watched the original series, the differences were very apparent in the change of actors, location and characters and even the theme of the story. It would have been nicer to have had the ending of the original series as the flow wasn't good. I was very disappointed with their new take on the original series.

3 out of 5 stars Caution: Watch with an open mind!.......2007-04-26

After having watched the 20 episodes of the original Christy series, I was dismayed and disappointed with these subsequent videos. Not only are some key actors and actresses missing but the entire atmosphere of "Cutter's Gap" is topsy-turvy compared to the original episodes. I feel for the returning actors and actresses (Neil McNeil, Tom, Opal, etc.) that had to watch this change take place and still try to respond like the old characters did to their surroundings. These new videos (in my humble opinion) demean the mountain people whereas in the original there was nobility to their characters even in the midst of their ignorance. Not only that, but the handling of God and Christianity in these new videos is ridiculous -- throwing around cutsy little sayings, etc. with no depth.

Unlike the originals, these videos portray life there in one dimension. There are too many dramatic elements just seemingly thrown in for the sake of action -- no real thinking behind the events. It seems to me someone meant well but missed the mark completely. Very sad. I could easily just get up and walk away from these movies even as badly as I wanted to see the outcome for Christy's marital decision.

So I caution those that were touched and moved by the original episodes. They were truly over with the last episode depicting Christy holding her engagement ring from David in one hand and Doc McNeil riding up on his little horse (they do give him a larger, more handsome horse in the new videos). Finishing those episodes in your mind is much better than contaminating them with these new imposter videos.

Thank you for the space to air my thoughts.

p.s. I am told by my daughter, and I agree to an extent, that the new actresses for Ruby Mae and Fairlight were the only ones that lived up to the original characters.

3 out of 5 stars Are you a die-hard X-Men fan?.......2007-05-11

Do you refer to all of the X-Men (including Wolverine) by their full names instead of their code names? Do you reassure yourself that the discrepancies between various versions can be explained by invoking alternate timelines? Do you while away boring tasks by mentally assembling teams with synergistic combinations of mutant powers? Can you use the expression "oh my stars and garters" with a straight face?

If you answered "yes" to all of the above, you should buy X-Men: Evolution Season 1. If, instead, you rolled your eyes in disgust and assumed I was joking, you should probably pass on it.

The first season is exactly what one would expect of an X-Men take-off targeted at the Saturday morning cartoon crowd. Major characters are accounted for, but the intellectual elements are missing, or at least obscured by the saccharine "feel-good" tone of the show. Like all things X-Men related, the stories are character driven. However, relying heavily on tired high school clichés, they have all the emotional depth of a Hallmark greeting card.

The scenario has teenage versions of Jean, Scott, Kitty, Kurt, Evan, and Rogue (ok, even I don't know her real name) attending high school with several members of the Brotherhood. Clearly, this must be some alternate timeline because otherwise serious liberty has been taken with the biographies of some major characters.

Despite the dubious tutelage of principal Raven Darkholme (a.k.a. Mystique), the young mutants learn that its important to know who your true friends are, home is where the heart is, your family is all those who love you, and teamwork should come before rivalry. Professor Xavier and his fellow faculty members, Ororo and Logan, exchange kids-will-be-kids looks and all is well with the world.

The central theme of mutants as a metaphor for various oppressed groups does not come into play, as the story assumes mankind is unaware of the existence of mutant abilities. However, those lovable teenage misfits in the Brotherhood make enough trouble to keep the X-Kids busy and make the series enjoyable. If you shudder at the idea of supervillians so adorable you just want to tousle their hair and pinch their cheeks, let me reassure you that the cuteness does have a limit; the major antagonists are taken seriously and represented as adults. You won't see the master of magnetism wielding his powers to steal road signs, or a teenage Mystique banishing a pimple with her shape shifting ability.

In all fairness, the aspects of the first season which so disappoint the basement-dwelling thirty-somethings make it perfect for children. The episodes generally stand on their own, requiring little or no effort to follow. Morality is fairly black-and-white and happy endings are the norm. There is a final confrontation at the end, but little was done to lead up to it. Don't expect to be dazzled (or challenged) with creative plot twists.

For adult fans, the greatest strength of the X-Men: Evolution series is the writers' uncanny talent for putting the characters' powers to use in amazing combinations. For example, in the first season, you'll see Nightcrawler and Shadowcat making synergistic use of their abilities. I personally found this rather refreshing, as I have often postulated (during a boring commute) that Kurt and Kitty would make an astounding team. Evolution is one of the few incarnations of the X-Men where power-related plot holes are difficult to find. Unlike many science fiction creators, the Evolution writers clearly define the "rules" of their universe and play by them consistently. These subtle indications of genius foreshadow what is to come in later in the series.

Considered in isolation, the first season is mediocre and rates three stars. I was tempted to give it four simply because of the inherent sentimental value in seeing my favorite superheroes (and a few villains) as adorable animated adolescents. The main reason for the die-hard fan to purchase season one, however, is the expectation of what is to come. The humor, intrigue and drama of the later seasons build upon the characters and relationships established in the first episodes, so if you intend to watch the series it is best to get in at the beginning.

And no fan should go without seeing the rest of the series. In the second season, X-Men: Evolution, like its protagonists, undergoes a rapid and dramatic transition from an immature, simplistic form to a thing of awesome and unlimited potential. The contrast is enough to elicit and exclamation of "oh my stars and garters".

Awesome fun wholesome entertainment. Classic entertainment with all the comic book heros we know and love.

4 out of 5 stars Great Price for a Great Show.......2006-07-21

I was thrilled to find this set here on Amazon, and buying this set is so much cheaper then buying each volume seperatly. All of the DVD's have some good interviews with the producers, designers, voice actors, and other people associated with the show. I don't usually like watching interviews/things where people talk a lot, but I love watching those interviews over and over and seeing the steps they took to make this show as good as it was. I totall reccomend it to anyone looking for something a little different.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best - but fun for X-fans.......2006-07-07

Season One of X-Men Evolution is undoubtedly the weakest season of the show. The voice actors have not settled in to their roles (most notably Professor X and Wolverine), the show introduces a lot more the high school aspect of X-Men, and its constant changes to X-Lore take a lot of getting used to.

But Evolution will eventually win you over. It's fun to see the high school setting, the different interpretations of the characters and the show itself is good fun. X-fans may have to grin and bear at some of the more "unwise" decisions (most painfully the season finale with Magneto), but I think overall that this is worth any X-fans hard earned cash. It's a thoughtful show, unique, and never lets itself get pretentious, preachy, or too serious.

Description

Adam Evans (Oscar®-winner Anthony Hopkins) is a middle- aged college professor having a torrid affair with a beautiful young coed (luscious Bo Derek, whose slow-motion hot tub romp with Hopkins remains one of the most erotic scenes of the decade). In retaliation, his wife Karyn (Oscar®-winner Shirley MacLaine) begins sleeping with a sexy young carpenter (Michael Brandon). But when Adam, Karyn and their respective lovers decide to vacation together in their country home, their four-way romantic getaway will test the limits of love, jealousy, family and freedom. Mary Beth Hurt (THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP) co-stars in this offbeat romantic comedy/drama co- written by Erich Segal, the Oscar®-nominated writer of LOVE STORY.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN.......2006-03-16

... This could easily have been a tearjerker(it`s a depressing theme - "a middleaged husband replaces wife with a 20-year-old"), but the story goes comic and Mary Beth Hurt is hilarious as Shirl and Tony`s daughter. This is the only film(with 10)- of the mainstream character - that Bo Derek did in her early career(although as young teenagers - we loved her in the soft-porn Bolero and Ghosts can`t do it hehe.)

It`s good to see how young Anthony Hopkins once was and the film is filled with great acting talent...

The bathtub scene... aaaaaa how I dreamt I could be Tony
Hopkins with Bo... I did even dream that... Since Bo Derek rocketed to fame in 1979-80 we haven`t had the pleasure of a runner-up... It`s a shame she never was given a James Bond-role - but she`s still gorgeous... so who knows? Maybe they`ll come to their senses and cast her one day as a Bond-dame?

2 out of 5 stars Winter blahs.......2006-01-25

40ish college professor Adam Evans (Anthony Hopkins) is having a fling with his 20-year old student, Lindsey (Bo Derek). When his wife (Shirley MacLaine) finds out, she doesn't get mad, she gets even, by starting an affair with a carpenter half her age. Rather than being shocked at this, Adam suggests the two May-September couples spend a ski vacation together, which seems to work out just dandy until Adam's daughter and her lover show up unexpectedly.

With this cast, I expected so much better, but the ridiculous script spoils everything. It tries way too hard to be hip and with-it and ever-so-nonchalant about the extra-marital affairs, with non-stop banter that consists entirely of sarcastic one-liners. There are no pauses, just rapid-fire zingers fired off by poker-faced actors who never become real characters. Even with Bo Derek's topless romp in a hot tub, there is nothing even remotely sexy or romantic here, and the word "love" is never mentioned. Hopkins' wonderful voice and subtle facial expressions are wasted, as there are no close-ups of him (or anyone else) and no time to search their faces for anything resembling jealousy, pain, rage, or even pleasure (emotions that are all lacking in the script). I did like MacLaine's understated performance and Bo is breathtakingly beautiful (this movie was made just as "10" came out), but it all comes to nothing. And the theme song that runs throughout the film, "Where Do I Catch the Bus for Tomorrow?" is so hopelessly corny and dated that it's just laughable.

This movie is a curious and disappointing footnote in the careers of Hopkins and MacLaine.

4 out of 5 stars Great 70's women's movie........1999-08-06

An interesting movie that reflects how Hollywood was portraying the changing roles and attitudes of women in the 70's. Fun to see Bo Derek and Anthony Hopkins in the hot tub--total 70's. Shirley MacLaine's excellent.

The X-Men (and a few women) stand ready to rock your world with three x-ceptional tales charting the struggle of good and evil between two powerful teams of mutant superbeings. Based on Marvel's television series (seen on the KidsWB Network), this first-ever video continues the saga of Professor Xavier in his search for teens that possess the special gift of an X-gene to join his School for Gifted Youngsters. The professor's goal is to train his band of teens to master their mental powers for good. Meanwhile, his nemesis, the menacing Magneto, and fellow conspirator Mystique are molding their protégés for darker deeds. In the first episode, "Strategy X," Kurt Wagner, a.k.a. Nightcrawler, joins Professor X at the Institute, but not before a highly charged close call in the Danger Room. In the second segment, "The X Impulse," we meet 15-year-old Kitty Pryde as she discovers her secret phasing ability--the power to walk through walls. Professor X and Jean rush to bring her to the Institute, arriving just in time to save Kitty from a new mutant adversary, Avalanche. Finally, in "Rogue Recruit," Professor X has detected a new mutant named Rogue who is a danger to herself and others after she accidentally steals the memories of a boy at school. Xavier sends his team to rescue her, only to discover that Mystique is competing for control of Kitty's limitless power. Clever story lines, suspenseful action, and a few romantic subtleties are certain to satisfy X-fans. --Lynn Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Here we go again.......2004-07-16

This DVD was wonderful. It's not meant to be real, it's just X-men for the next generation, those who don't remember the comics or the original cartoon. It's for kids. The stories are amusing, and the romantic subtext between certain characters makes me giggle (I look for the romance in *everything*, even the back of a cheerios box... it's sad...). The added scenes that WB didn't think were mature enough for original airing were also a nice perk. I plan to collect the entire series. See you Volume 2!

5 out of 5 stars If you liked the X-Men movies, you should love this.......2003-09-23

It's certainly true that X-Men: Evolution is toned down in terms of violence. It's aimed more for PG-13, not R as the other rater seems to want.

But it's still an excellent show, and anyone who can enjoy the movies should certainly enjoy the animated series. If you hated the movies due to inaccuracies with the comic books then you won't like this series either. The characters in the series are nearly identical to the ones from the movies, with the exception of Nightcrawler. In the movies, he was blue and covered with self-inflicted tattoo scarring. In the series he's blue, fuzzy and lighthearted. Wolverine, Cyclops, Xavier, Magneto, etc, are characters you'll be immediately familiar with from the movies.

Is this a show intended to capture the attention of X-Men comic book loyalists? Probably not.

It's a show about a group of young people coming into mutant powers who find themselves thrust into the role of superhero.... or supervillian, depending on if they chose to join the X-Men or ally with Magneto. The animation style is colorful and contemporary, the voice acting is excellent, there's enough action and laughs to entertain the younger crowd and enough character development and plotline to keep an older crowd entertained as well. It's X-Men in a format friendly enough for primetime. The character interactions are much richer than you typically find in animated superhero shows and it's just an all around great show.

Like any book (or comic book) converted to film, don't get so hung up on what got changed or "left out" and this will be a series you can really enjoy.

Also, check out the boxed set which has all of season 1.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Real Deal.......2003-08-09

I'am a huge X-Men fan and Ultimate X-men is not the real thing. First of all you do not even have the original five all togehther that is Beast, Jean, Cyclops, Iceman, and angel. Second of all Wolverine is the most deadly mutant ever and in this show they make him seem like a softie. In the comics he kills men by the hundreds. He knows all forms of combat and here he does not do anyhting. For anybody who really wants to know the real X-Men and the real Wolverine. I suggest reading Essential Uncanny X-Men that includes the original five, The Essential X-Men that includes wolverine, colossus, storm etc.To see wolverine do what he is capable of and what he was made to do read Essential Wolverine 1-3. You can also find everything on X-Men at Marvel website and that is marvel.com. So once again if you really want to get into X-Men and Wolverine buy the comics not this show. The original Show that aired 1992 you can find on ABC Family on the weekends at 10:00 in the morning. People are trying to get that show on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome x men movie, "Unexpected Changes".......2003-07-03

This has to be the best X men evelution movie ever! I am a huge fan of the X men evelution program and am very thankful that you finnally made a movie. Thank you very much!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars X-Citing.......2002-09-03

X-Men: Evolution is my favorite cartoon on tv right now, with good reason.

Unexpected Changes contains the first three episodes of this awesome series. In the first, Strategy X, Scott's powers are accidently unleashed at a football game while tying to defend another mutant named Todd. Meanwhile, Kurt Wagner adjusts to life at the Xavier Institute, with some interesting results. In The X-Impulse, Kitty Pryde's powers develop one night, and she meets Lance, a fellow mutant who will be a very important figure in her life even after they're recruited to opposite sides. In the final episode, Rogue Recruit, a young goth named Rogue develops a dangerous power with unlimited possibilities, and Mystique makes sure she'll never join the X-Men.

While these episodes aren't as good as some of the one's in the second season, it's a strong start to a cool show. The animation is lovely, the music is catchy, and the characters are great. I highly recommend X-Men: Evolution!

5 out of 5 stars This movie is tight!!.......2000-10-09

This movie can really describe unfaithfulness in a fun way. I give this movie an a plus. I saw it two weeks ago. You would really love a movie like this. Trust me. I love it!!
