this movie just not funny not even stupid i like stupid funny movies this is not it

911 Ain't a Joke!.......2006-07-07

In this supposed comedy, a graduate student in film records the goings-on at County Hospital where his girlfriend works. The movie is a bit of a way to critique healt care provision in inner cities: shady workers, unethical doctors, incorrect operations, etc. Still, this movie had no plot, bad acting, bad timing, and lots of gross-out humor.

Okay, I'm ashamed that this is one of my first comments, but here it goes: the cover says it has nudity and it does not! There are sexual situations, but there is no clear view of male or female genitalia. Total false advertising!

I guess you could say the Caucasian characters here play the role of "straight guy." However, there is a way in which whites are portrayed as sane and Blacks as foolish. Maybe it's beneficial that Black actors and actresses get to perform the comedy in a comedy, but there was still something unsettling about this dynamic.

Like in many African-American films ("Sprung," "Foolish," "Coming to America," etc.), the light-skinned leading female gets to be portrayed as more worthy, loving, and virtuous than any of the dark-skinned Blacks. So offensive and stereotypical! The villain of the film is a man named Dr. Patel. Though Patel is a common Indian name, the character is monoracially Black and never once mentions being part Indian. Did the directors think a Black character won't be seen as bad if he has an Indian name? Did Indian actors refuse to play the role? Are the directors trying to say so many Indians are doctors that a hospital couldn't exist without a Patel on staff? Regardless, this appellation was odd and possibly insensitive to both Indians and Blacks.

I love seeing Black actors and actresses being able to work their craft. Nevertheless, this was a god-awful movie that was painful to watch and should have never been greenlighted in the first place.

An offbeat, at times amusing look at the growing commerce between the traditional horse-and-buggy Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and the millions of tourists who come to buy their wares and gawk at them year after year. THE AMISH AND US whimsically turns the table on the tourists, interpreting their behavior from the Amish point of view, such that it is the tourists who appear odd and curious, even quaint rather than the Amish. The film also examines the effect of suburban sprawl which has forced many Amish out of farming. With a scarcity of land and a growing population, the Amish increasingly rely on the craft and construction businesses for their livelihood. Ironically, these same Amish businesses help fuel the developments that are nibbling away at their land. Although trade is a boon, the constant contact with outsiders threatens to erode the traditions and values that are the foundations of the Amish way of life: community decision making, simple living and quiet non-conformity with the rest of the world.

After traveling to Brown County to view the fall each year, little did I know about the true history of how the area was settled. Only after reading such a wonderful book as this, did I get a true appreciation for the beautiful art history of Brown County. This book is a rare find. I believe it is now out of print. The pictures (over 80 color plates) are top quality and works of art in their own right. A true collectors edition!

Brown County is a place I dearly love. Midwesterners flock to Brown County to enjoy the beauty of nature and of art. This book celebrates those artists and their spirit. Anyone who loveas art, nature, or spirited adventurers will appreciate this book. The book is beautiful and makes a wonderful gift(if you can bear to part with it).
