This eerily beautiful film stars Miranda Stuart Rhyne as Angela, a young girl trying to cope with her family's falling apart. Her mother (Anna Thomson) has drastic mood shifts that bring her from manic happiness to utter misery. Her father (John Ventimiglia) tries to hold everyone together, but Mae's vacillations are becoming more than he can manage. Adrift, Angela and her little sister concoct magical rituals and have visions of fallen angels and the Virgin Mary; reading signs in the way a towel falls off a chair or a tool falls off a truck, they set off to find their way to heaven. Angela succeeds because of writer-director Rebecca Miller's keen understanding of childhood, when imagination and reality are fluid and fantasies can exert a potent influence over a child's life. An unsettling and affecting movie, with an excellent performance by Rhyne. --Bret Fetzer
Description
From award winning director Rebecca Miller comes this poignant coming-of-age story about a young girl caught between the harsh realities of a difficult family life and the fantasy world she escapes to inside her head. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sun
Customer Reviews:
Eerie and thought-provoking.......2007-02-13
Rebecca Miller's haunting tale of a young girl driven by her religious
obsessions into a frightening world of hallucinogenic images and
superstitious delusion. There are touching performances by the two principal
girl actors, Miranda Stuart Rhyne and Charlotte Eve Blythe. Rhyne, in
particular, is engaging as the young protagonist caught in a heavenly
struggle between good and evil to save her mentally ill mother. She
convincingly portrays Angela as a determined and feisty but naive and
vulnerable child in equal measure; someone who is headstrong but literally
open to abuse.
There is a fine director's commentary narrated by Miller exploring the
themes and motivations that went into the making of the film.
Hidden treasure.......2006-08-25
I enjoy discovering obscure, little known films that turn out to be little gems and hidden teasures of cinematic art. You almost have to find these films by accident to be aware of them. WALKABOUT is one. PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK is another. ANGELA can be added to the list of these pleasant surprises.
I think it would be very difficult to verbally describe what this film is about in such a way to prepare a prospective viewer as to what to expect. I read the reviews and customer comments and must admit the film was completely different than my preconceived notions had led me to believe. The only thing I could say is it is about two little girls and how the depression and mental illness of their mother influence and affect their view of the world in which they live.
Usually I prefer crisp, brightly and clearly filmed movies. This one has a murky, grainy quality to it that I would usually abhor. However I realized after viewing it that this murky graininess contributed significantly to the mood and atmosphere of the film. The music that was chosen also contributed to this atmosphere.
One who is offended by child nudity should probably avoid ANGELA, as the filmmaker obviously had no qualms about showing both girls (10 and 6) in more than a few scenes in sundry stages of nakedness. Nevertheless, these scenes (casual, spontaneous),just as the graininess and music, also contributed to forming the interesting atmosphere of the film. It would have suffered if any of these mood-setting devices had been omitted.
Hats off to Rebecca Miller for ANGELA, a unique and wonderfully made gem that I would highly recommend.
Airborne Horrors Stalk Two Children.......2006-07-18
This is a strange film in which two young girls are followed and haunted by boom mikes. These floating supernatural apparitions rarely venture far from the unfortunate children, dogging their footsteps like silent, bobbing moths of doom.
Plays out like an urban fantasy. .......2005-10-06
I watched this film a few years ago and have never forgotten it. In it, we have two pre-teen sisters who are trying to deal with the mental state of their mother, which is getting worse and worse with each passing day. Their father is an endearing man, although a bit permissive, and does his best to hold the rocky family together.
The film takes a strange turn into what many conclude is our protagonist's (a girl named Angela) own slide into mental illness. I'm not sure that's the case, as I find reason to believe some aspects of her visions might have very well been true, but the point is that she's a tormented soul and finds escapism through a vivid imagination and a self-made quest that frees her mind from what's currently happening. This is a quest for purification from the evil of the world, one that she brings her sister along for the ride, and one that finds a handsome, peaceful Lucifer as their largest obstacle. He simply states to her on numerous times, "I want you, Angela" in a very gentle, yet thouroughly dark way.
Eventually, Angela's quest, with her young sister at her side, takes her across the back roads of her town. Her firm belief in her journey makes her the near victim of a crime as well as the viewer of some very bizarre happenings. In the end, Angela decides to face her fears directly.
The end of this film will leave you in awe.
Superior film and wonderful young heroine.......2004-12-29
You never know for sure what a film will be like when you order it. Sometimes you are pleased, sometimes not. Angela is truly a superior film and it exceeeded my expectations. The storyline took a sad turn with the mental instability of Angela's mother and how she had to be placed in an institution. However, I was more than uplifted by the job done by the girl who played Angela and how she kept seeking God and Heaven. Miranda Stuart Rhyne's performance was most enchanting. This is the best movie that I have bought from Amazon to date. I really felt for Angela as she fought her nightmares and kept on her spiritual journey. I will watch this movie again and again and that is not something that I do very often. The young teen actress did a better acting job here than most actors and actresses do that are two or three times her age! She should have a spectacular film career ahead of her! I highly recommend this movie!

Adam and Eve has an interesting premise with a lot of potential as a thoughtful, adult movie. Disheveled musician and college student Adam (Cameron Douglas, son of Michael Douglas) goes out of his way to meet the beautiful Eve (Emmanuelle Chriqui) on campus. In no time, the two are in love. Everything goes swimmingly except in the bedroom, where Eve asserts her right to remain a virgin until she's ready. Adam--though deferential--takes her requirement personally and demands to know what "ready" means. The pair go on like this for months, with Adam remaining true to his passion for Eve, despite howls of protest from his degenerate housemates (among them Jake Hoffman, son of Dustin Hoffman). Eve takes flak, too, from some of her own roomies, yet for awhile it appears Adam and Eve's story will include other young women inspired by Eve's insistence on respect behind closed doors. Unfortunately, writer-director Jeff Kanew (Revenge of the Nerds) elects not to go down that path and nearly derails the movie with inconsequential gross-out scenes at Adam's house. But the material dedicated to Adam and Eve's challenging relationship is discerning. --Tom Keogh
Description
In the tradition of National Lampoon's Animal House and National Lampoon's Van Wilder comes this wildly hilarious comedy about a guy who wants to date a girl who wants to wait. Adam (Cameron Douglas) is a typical college-aged guy, which is to say he wants sex 24 hours a day. But when he meets, and falls for, Eve (Emmanuelle Chriqui) a scorchingly hot co-ed who's still very attached to her virginity, the waiting game is on! While his college buddies score right and left, and campus hotties make tempting passes, Adam ponders an explosive question: Will Eve say "it's the right time," before he goes completely out of his mind?
Customer Reviews:
Flee this film, at all costs.......2007-01-21
Most will watch this film to see virginity lost--after all, it is a National Lampoon title. A few may watch it to see how to keep their virginity until they marry, or perhaps die. Some like me will stumble upon it on late night cable, and find it a nearly perfect cure for insomnia. How could I know any one film could be so bad? In a spirit of genuine concern, I formally warn you.
No plot, no acting, no skin, no comedy, no action. This is not even useful for a Sunday school class on virginity. It is an atrocity and a zero. Rent Animal House or Vacation if you want real National Lampoon material, or anything else you please; just avoid this soap opera.
Very gross. Little else.......2006-04-15
NATIONAL LAMPOON has come out with some great party movies. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. The premise is pretty straightforward: a girl in college does not want to go "all the way" with her b/f because she wants everything to be special. That's fair enough and is also understandable.
IF the movie would have only focused on that and nothing else (and I can live with it being over an hour shorter), then it would have been OK. The reason? Easy. Emmanuelle Chriqui is absolutely STUNNING as Eve. Her beauty fills of the screen; I'd love to see more of her work and hope that she gets better roles in much better movies than this farce.
Unfortunately, too much of the movie is about the subplot of living @ a fraternity house. To be sure, this is a very common motif in NATIONAL LAMPOON movies. The problem is, the fellow frat-boys of Adam are beyond disgusting. Moreover, the movie wants to "push the envelope" of being nasty, relying on shock-value more than doing something because it has any humor value.
Cameron Douglas is a goon; I was a bit surprised to learn that he was the son of Michael Douglas. He certainly does not have any acting ability whatsoever, unlike his father & grandfather. Apparently in this film he is a sort of Ron Jeremy anti-hero type; the dufus guy who ends up with the sizzling hot babe.
This is the bottom line, and I will be as fair as I can be: if you crave bathroom humor and simply can't get enough of it, then by all means buy this DVD. If bathroom humor is your "thing," then this DVD is a dream-come-true.
However, if like me a little bit of that stuff goes a LONG way, then check out other, better NATIONAL LAMPOON movies such as BARELY LEGAL and VAN WILDER. The choice is your's.
After school special everyone........2006-03-30
This movie is sometimes a comedy but mostly it deals with a real relationship and the problems that come into it when Eve wants to stay a virgin. Little bits are thrown in for comedic value and they center around Adam's roomates in college who are all disgusting (I would reccommend not eating while watching these parts, it could ruin your meal). Overall, everyone will see Eve as a total beyotch because she is being totally unfair in the relationship while Adam is a totaly douche. I would not reccommend this movie for it's comedic value, but maybe as an afterschool special? Ha
Oh Lord, please don't let amatures sell in national markets, otherwise, how will we know?.......2006-03-17
Look. We rented this "film" because we thought the premise had merit. Finally, something outside the Bud-beer-comercial sameness everything in our culture pushes. Bravo to the film on that. Bravo! It DID tackle the subject with seriousness. At no time did it stray from that intention. OK. Good for you.
GAWD was this BORING! GAWD was this amaturish! Dear Lord in Heaven, please help kids who want to spend a few weekends slapping together a "film" (entirely shot on videotape) with the dialogue, with the plot (so it's not so predictable), with the CAMERAWORK that doesn't look like Uncle Dave got ahold of his camcorder. What's with all the smoke in the rooms? Too much!
A good student film.
National Lampoon will put their name in front of anything now.
Ladies and Gentlemen... like the main character dude in the film, when renting or buying "films", check anything before you take it out for the night... make sure you're clear if it's going to give you a urinary tract infection... or if it's still figuring out how to do this whole filmmaking thing for the first time. I want a new rating. "A" for amature.
Great "Guy" humor.......2006-03-11
Adam and Eve proved that "guy" humor at its funniest, is best served raunchy. I thought Adam's character was believable and well acted, although I doubt Cameron Douglas has had much experience with "blue balls." Eve's character was beautiful, intelligent and evoked my respect. The actress has a great ass and great assets as an actress. I thought the script was sincere, very funny and relevant. Adam and Eve treats a woman's "right to choose" to be a virgin in college (oh my God, imagine that!) with respect and a raunchy dose of humor.

Description
Extraordinarily empowering and heartbreakingly funny, the Sundance favorite V-DAY: UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS chronicles how Eve Ensler's hit Broadway solo show The Vagina Monologues grew into V-Day, an international grassroots movement to stop violence against women and girls. The first of its kind, The Vagina Monologues has been widely recognized as "a celebration of women's sexuality and a condemnation of its violation" (The New York Times) and praised as "frank, humorous and moving" (Chicago Tribune). Over eight hundred cities around the world have participated in V-Day by staging benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues. From locales as diverse as New York, the Phillippines and Kenya, director Abby Epstein's UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS features emotionally charged interviews and readings by everyday and celebrity women (including Rosie Perez, Salma Hayek, Rosario Dawson, Jane Fonda and LisaGay Hamilton), all of whom courageously reveal their intimate experiences and bond together to break the silence that surrounds abuse. More than just a group testimonial, UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS is a moving celebration of community awareness that leaves us with the hope that change can happen. DVD Features: Deleted Scenes/Locations; V-Day Spotlight Campaigns; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection
Customer Reviews:
Subject matter excellent -- presentation, eh!.......2007-02-18
I love Eve Ensler and most of what she does, but I did not find this to be well put together. I still would keep it in my library, but I was somewhat disappoionted in the presentation.
Vday-Until the Violence Stops.......2007-01-09
As an elderly victim-survivor-celebrant of incest, date rape and third generation of domestic violence, I speak of personal knowledge of what assistance can accomplish. This is the most inspiring of all the V-Day publications. Viewing the struggles world-wide of abused women AND the successful efforts to renew and empower them ~ is worth ten times the price of this. I have shared it with ten women (so far) who knew nothing of Eve Ensler. It has become my mission. I am proud to own and share this publication and DVD.
A powerful and movie video.......2006-04-20
A must see for any fan of the Vagina Monologues. After seeing this documentary, I brought it to my VM cast and shared it with my co-performers. This video not only brings violence against women into a powerful light, but it also brings a fuller perspective to the impact of activism, especially the Vagina Monologues. This DVD is better than the original television broadcast with special updates about some of the global VDay beneficiaries.
An astounding show which will bring you to tears, bring you momentous joys, and will challenge you to be a part of the action to help come together as we end violence.
Excellent look at what women can do..........2006-03-21
This documentary was a spectacular example of what ordinary women can do when they unite and are determined to change the world around them. I also applaud the women in the film with their candor and honesty. When I showed this film, many of the responses I got were amazed that famous women had experienced abuse. I think it is great for "ordinary" women to discover that even "famous" women have their obstacles and struggles.
Amazing documentary .......2004-12-14
Whether you have seen The Vagina Monologues in person or not, this documentary covers the global impact of these performances as a way to increase awareness about, and encourage active solutions to, men's violence against women. The film follows the growth of The Vagina Monologues in 5 communities all over the world (the U.S., the Philippines, and Kenya). This is a powerful film--you will be changed after watching it.

Released two years later than originally scheduled, Town & Country was plagued by the kind of negative buzz that few movies recover from. Like the infamous Ishtar, this Warren Beatty-led ensemble comedy is ungainly and erratic, but when it's funny it's quite funny, and the involvement of cowriter Buck Henry makes it a lot smarter than most of what passes for wit in postmillennial comedy. An updated sex farce fueled by modern-day foibles, the movie's also an apologetic valentine from notorious womanizers like Beatty, who, as wealthy Manhattan architect Porter Stoddard, is paying the price for his dalliance with a sexy cellist (Nastassja Kinski). While Porter's wife (Diane Keaton) fumes with suspicion, their best friends Mona (Goldie Hawn) and Griffin (Garry Shandling) wage their own marital warfare after Mona spies Griffin with a gorgeous redhead. Mona shouldn't believe what she sees, but she still has cause to worry.
Porter also has a fling with a ski-bunny psycho (Andie MacDowell) with an obsessively protective father (Charlton Heston), and a store clerk (Jenna Elfman) with a thing for Russian literature. It all leads to comedic acts of contrition, but too many gags are strained or flat; lacking knowledge of its troubled history, you'd still think Town & Country was a puzzle with missing pieces. And yet, these veteran stars somehow pull it together just enough to make it work, and with the stammering Shandling as a standout, the movie boasts a few noteworthy highlights. Heston's a riot (believe it or not), and although Town & Country doesn't fire on all pistons, it's got enough horsepower to suggest it could've been a contender. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A hilarious comedy about life, love, friendship and the sometimes blistering nature of marital bliss.
Customer Reviews:
Having it all to having to start from stratch.......2006-07-02
This movie is perfect for the perfect couple. When you figure out that your marrige of 25 years is on the rocks what do you do? Well Ellie nows what to do, try to resolve it. After embarrissing her in front of everyone and everyone knows about his cheating. So they finally get a divorce when Potter finally realizes let he had lost his only true love. So know he has to work on getting it back one step at a time.
Excellent Adult Comedy.......2006-03-19
I saw this movie on a flight from Sydney to Los Angeles and loved it. I am surprised it was rated to poorly. I am also surprised that if the cast went to every household that watched the movie in the cinemas and acted out the movie, it would have been cheaper than making the movie. Anyway, I think it is an excellent adult comedy, few of which are made today. It's a good movie if you want a laugh. I particularly like the conversation between Beatty & Shandling during their 'miscommunication' scene.
MOVE OVER ISHTAR AND HOWARD THE DUCK.......2006-03-05
Filmed in 1998 and not released until 2001, TOWN AND COUNTRY has the dubious honor of being one of the most financially disastrous films of all time. What were these talented actors doing in a mess like this? It's thin plot focuses on marital infidelity and pompous overacting. Warren Beatty is basically playing his off-screen persona; Diane Keaton is playing the same roles she's been playing ever since Annie Hall; Garry Shandling is like a stand up comic with no funny lines; Goldie Hawn is the same Goldie from DEATH BECOMES HER; Andie McDowell and Nastassa Kinski are wasted in their superflous roles; and Charlton Heston is no Leslie Nielsen, and is about as funny as HOWARD THE DUCK.
Peter Chisom's direction is pedestrian and uninspired, and the whole thing just falls flat on its incompetent face. What a waste!
Not Worth It.......2004-03-24
Do not waste your time. In spite of the cast, this movie is a whopping dud. Meandering and unfulfiling. A shame. I'd give it zero stars, but the system won't let me.
One of the worst. movies we've ever tried to watch.......2004-03-19
This was one of the worst movies my husband and I ever tried to watch. We finally gave up and I threw our DVD away. We were looking forward to watching it because of the cast, but that just proves that you need more than very good actores to make a good movie. Nothing seemed funny to us; I find it strange that it got better reviews than "My Fellow Americans" and "Her Alibi." We enjoyed the first one and thought the second one was cute, but they got trounced. Which might also prove that you have to be an outspoken liberal to get a good review in Hollywood?

Description
A festive evening of musical entertainment complete with soloists, musicians, dancing, and fireworks, this New Year's Eve celebration in Berlin was conducted by Daniel Barenboim, chief conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and musical director of the Staatsoper unter den Linden. Highlights of this sparkling occasion include lighthearted music by Nicolai, Mozart, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky, Shsostakovich, Johann Strauss II, Kollo, and Lincke, performed by singers including Dorothea Roschmann and Simone Nold, dancers from the Staatsoper Ballet, fifteen-year-old violin virtuoso Raphael Christ, and the inimitable H.K. Gruber singing Kurt Weill's "Berlin im Licht."

New Year's Concert 1985.......2003-12-27
One who is familiar with the works of Herbert von Karajan will know about his unique power with orchestration. This particular DVD is no different, and in fact exceptional (again)! Weber's "Der Freischutz," Cavallo's "Pagliacci", Puccini's "Manon Lescaut," Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody #5," and Ravel's "Bolero" to be experienced on one DVD is marketing genius. The "Der Freischutz" Overture leads this DVD with a steady, almost Straussian alpine touch of individual signature pieces for building the movement, such as the magical horns that adds grace, and power to the work. It was almost like von Karajan was sending each listener through a maze, in which the mood was steady, and unyielding until Ravel's "Bolero." This is a very good example of early, middle, and later Romanticism works that von Karajan shares for this remarkable evening.
Herbert von Karajan's Legacy for Home Video is truly a remarkable collection, which the best is presented for the true connoisseur of classical music. I highly recommend this, and all others in the collection.
