3 out of 5 stars Three Words: Bump that Ish! .......2007-09-16

******SPOILER********

Yah Know......There are a series of events that happen within the first 5 minutes of the movie that if it were real life, there would not have BEEN a movie. I know I know, it's only a movie. Hollywood is allowed to make ANYTHING into a movie, even if everyone reading this review know that It Aint gonna happen. The movie was not boring, took a little long to get to the point, and I will admit, there were quite a few parts that made me yelp. The twist on the end was clever, and worth the wait, and seeing the movie for the second time, I looked out for signs of the twist early on! For the most part, I had three words to say: BUMP THAT ISH!

Event #1: There is a knock on your door at 11:00pm. You live in a secured building.

Event #2: You look through your peep hole, no one is there....>STOP!! The movie should have been over at this point, because had that been anyone with a brain, that whole little "knock" thing would have been completely ignored, and for DANG sure wasn't nobody opening the door! But lets say curiosity gets the best of you, and you open the door ANYWAY...

Event #3: On the floor in front of your apartment door, there is a big brown box on the floor, with your name and NO return address......>STOP!! With the wake of terrorist attacks, I am not TRUSTING the package because I don't know who dropped it off, I wasn't expecting a package, it's 11:00pm AND there's no return address? In what world does it constitute bringing that into your home? Hell, it wasn't even wrapped in pretty paper! I was PLAIN BROWN with black marker for goodness sake!! But let's say you are still curious ( I am pretty sure most of us were moaning at the main character at this point) and you bring that box into your home IGNORING ALL THE SIGNS.....

Event #4: Inside the box you find a creepy looking doll with the most evil look on his face.

Event #5: The box looks too much like a red satin lined coffin.

Event #6: Your psycho girlfriend starts singing a song about how this chick who loved ventriloquist dolls will kill you if you scream when she visits you in your dream......>STOP!! Okay, at this point there is a fire place within 4 feet of our main character......all those conditions make a perfect night for a fire....and a burning doll. And an ex-girlfriend. Movie is over, The End.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm just too old.......2007-09-16

I really can't understand how others think sometimes. Take this movie, for instance. It scared the Hell out of me. On the creepiness scale it was off the chart. Light on gore and strong on atmosphere, it is reminiscent of the great horror flicks of yesteryear, like the original version of The Haunting. The dolls alone are enough to give any sane person nightmares. So why all the negative reviews? What am I missing here?

If you're a blood and guts fan this one isn't for you. This film is heavy on suggestion and suspense, with special effects used more as the spice than the main treat. Call it a thinking person's horror movie if you like.

In any event, if you agree with my prior reviews of scary flicks you'll like this one a lot. If you don't then there's plenty of slasher trash out there on DVD to keep you busy for years - sad but true.

3 out of 5 stars Dead Silence went dead.......2007-09-15

I bought this in high expectations since it was made by the people of SAW (which was AMAZING). Leigh Whannell is one of my favorite movie writters but, no offense Leigh, but you did not do a great job on Dead Silence.

4 out of 5 stars pretty decent.........2007-09-12

I realize movies are very subjective....I liked this movie..not giving it 5 stars because there is room for improvement but I found the premise a bit spooky..and dolls always freaked me out as a child and so did dummies...(and clowns LOL).. I thought this was a good movie...(I also liked House of Wax..which I find similiar in the weirdness category..)

3 out of 5 stars Okay for what it is ...........2007-09-09

If you are looking for a silly horror diversion, this one fills the bill fine. Some weird gore, decent sets, a couple of decent jumps, and a very silly premise. It's improved by the actors who take it much more seriously than it deserves, but for a short horror flick it does have a few fun moments. Harmless fun. How old is Amber Valetta anyway?

4 out of 5 stars A return to classic horror and in stunning HD.......2007-08-25

Although this title got some mixed reviews, it is actually pretty good for the horror fan. Unlike most recent movies (scream, etc.) this is not a teen-horror-comedy in any way. This is classic horror, ala Nightmare on Elm Street. I swear to god I'm afraid of seeing that old woman every time I walk past the bathroom at night. Its that scary. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously though, there are still some "No!! Don't go into the dark basement" parts, but its ok. It wouldn't be a real horror film without that type of stuff.

Overall the picture quality on the HD DVD is very good. Some of the scenes are simply breath taking. The cinematography is very good, especially the camera angles on establishing shots. A lot of the camera work and atmosphere reminded me of the Silent Hill movie. The sound is also very good. Although not perfect, there is really nothing to complain about in the picture and sound department.

Overall Id say this is the scariest movie I've seen in a while. Other recent horror movies such as Saw, Hostel, etc. were pure gore-fests and not really much horror. There are definitely a few parts in the movie I jumped and after the movie I had to turn all the lights on because I was still spooked. Just to be clear, this is still somewhat of a cheesy movie, but it is a fresh breather from all the horror-comedies and definitely one of the better horror flicks available in HD.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-08-08

This movie really captures the "old school" horror feel in a movie by creating the fictional ghost story of mary shaw. The HD-DVD has great qualtiy and the movie is fantastic for a good scare def go for the hd version of dead silence. It even has the standard dvd on the same disk so if your thinking about upgrading to hd-dvd in the future def pick this one up. the dvd features are its only weakness being that it is the same of the standard dvd but hey still they aren't bad. features being Exclusive alternate ending and alternate opening Deleted scenes , The making of dead silence ,Mary Shaw's Secrets ,Evolution of a visual fx and more. So if your looking for a good scare def check this one out in HD!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Horror Vibe and a great HD DVD purchase.......2007-08-08

having been a big fan of the horror genre for years I found this to be highly entertaining, having a throw back feel to old school horror movies, with not a lot of violence and a focus on creepy atmosphere and jump scares of old, if you have a problem looking at creepy puppets you might find this one hard to get through and thats exactly why I like it, IMO you cant go wrong with the guys who wrote and directed SAW.

the HD DVD itself is a combo, which, depending on your situation, might be good or bad, if you are like me and have a lot of friends and family that dont have HD DVD then its a good thing, if you dont care about the Standard side then its not a good thing....overall the picture quality is pretty good, probably a 4 out of 5 rating on that, not the best certainly, but still a very nice transfer, sound is definitely good, a lot of the movie is very quiet (hence the name Dead Silence) and the surround works really well when it needs to....

All in all a great movie and a great buy if you are any kind of horror fan, it might be a little generic for some, but to me its definitely not

2 out of 5 stars Save the money and purchase a cheaper version, and not the hd. Features also listed below.......2007-08-03

I own about 40 Hd-dvds now, when they first came up I was re-buying alot, now I tend to wait for something new that I don't own or I re-purchase it if I really liked it. I also figured prices of Hd-dvds would come down by now after the first year like dvds did but surprisingly they have not. As for dead silence the sound and picture are always good on Hd dvd, also horror films in general have good sound, however this one does not stand out.
Great horror films can get us to forget what makes sense and get us to accept it. They can also be realistic and terrifying and hone in on some hardwired fear we have. Horror films can also purposely be so bad there good. This really isn't any of the above. The scares are the equivalent of me hiding and jumping out at you. I think i guessed nearly everything that happened in the movie prior to it happening. Other random things i found annoying, why does Donnie Wahlberg's character use a electric shaver everywhere? , why do we have to have ominous fog around a cemetery, bit cliche. There are a lot of holes yet I don't lose myself in the movie and accept it. As for the plot amazon provides a good enough description, no need to add to it.
Yes, I have seen worse horror movies, and yes this is a break from the torture porn genre however there are other picks for 2007 out there. If you want to stay on the Hd dvd kick try The Host, again getting away from the torture porn, and one of the best reviewed films of the year getting a 92% positive rating on rottentomtoes out of 129 film critics whereas Dead silence got 17% positive out of 63 critics. Better yet The Shining is now available to pre order on Hd dvd being released on October 23rd. If you have a need to watch killer dolls, watch or re watch Child's Play.
My advice is if you like horror and you want to check out some new on dvd for 2007 just buy a cheaper version than the hd.

Dvd features from box
Exclusive alternate ending and alternate opening
Deleted scenes
The making of dead silence
Mary Shaw's Secrets
Evolution of a visual fx and more

5 out of 5 stars 'Dead Silence' will not be what you hear watching with friends........2007-07-24

This is a real CREEPSHOW DELIGHT with lots of surprises in store. Extremely
well directed, and it keeps you thinking trying to figure what is going on. No teenybopper-slasher film, but something to be appreciated by 'Gourmets' of horror, and I used that word for a reason. Yes, there are some plot disconnects with everything not being linear-but that was on purpose and not the result of some bad directing. Crank up the microwave with some popcorn [TWO bags], sit back and just ENJOY! Good Horror Flicks are hard to find and this one is good, IN SPADES!
Rod Serling would love it were he still around, and he is counted among the masters in story telling.

2 out of 5 stars dummy please.......2007-07-30

I almost turned this off a few times due the lame actors and leaps in logic. But staying with it paid off a little. I still would have to say thumbs down. There are some good parts, the lady villain is way creepy and the doll itself is too. The death scenes are probably the most disappointing and how they arrive to these scenes only enforces the characters stupidity. The main good guy believes this dummy doll killed his wife (horrifically) so then why is the idiot driving the doll around town not in the trunk!! And propping the creeped out doll by his bed before sleeping? SORRY! First order of business is to send the that freaky doll down the river.

The ending almost saves this movie but by then I hardly cared.

This unusually taut thriller features James Garner playing against type as John Potter, a humorless FBI agent negotiating with an escaped convict, who, along with two cronies, has kidnapped a school bus full of deaf students and their teacher (Marlee Matlin). Stashed in an abandoned slaughterhouse, which is as much a character as the people in this HBO movie, the convicts and their prisoners sweat out Potter's refusal to give in to demands, despite the fact that he lost hostages--and the public's faith--his last time around. Garner gives his usual sterling performance, Kim Coates is an evil surprise as the ringleader of the convicts, and Matlin is fine, but underused, in a wordless performance. Lolita Davidovich comes in late in the game to tie up the loose ends and give the ending its punch. Director Daniel Petrie Jr. sets up the action during opening credits, an efficiency mirrored throughout the movie and capped off by an unexpected, but not out-of-the-blue ending. Donald Stewart (Missing) based his tightly written screenplay on Jeffrey Deaver's novel A Maiden's Grave. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

Three killers, eight hostages and only one man - Senior Agent John Potter - who can get them out alive. But what stands between him and their freedom, is more than just the criminals holding them hostage. Can he save the mission from ending in DEAD SILENCE. ' 'A really good action movie that fits James Garner to a T.' ' - Seattle Times

4 out of 5 stars Murder at the Old Mill.......2007-08-20

When some deaf mute students are taken hostage by three murderous escape convicts the odds don't look good for them. They are taken to an abandoned old mill along the Niagara River and the water is treacherous with the falls not far away. Fortuntely three adults are in there group so just maybe they have a chance. Or so you think until one is shot when the convicts demands aren't met. Will they be met? Will they find a way to escape? Will they survive? The answers may be depend upon their teacher played by Marlee Matlin.

A fairly suspenseful TV Movie with a good cast including James Garner. Garner plays a hostage negotiator for the FBI. Things get complicated when the Deputy Governor turns up and it turns out a couple million dollars is hidden in the mill. And to make matters worse there is subterfuge and corruption involving a woman and a man the police haven't identified yet. The cast and production values are great. Not a bad storyline as well. Although I have seen a couple other hostage movies this was not like anything I have seen before. I was impressed with the screenplay based on a book. I recommend this one as a purchase. Good replayability. If you enjoyed this be sure to catch "The Fan" and "Hear No Evil".

5 out of 5 stars NEGOTIATING THRILLS.......2004-02-21

DEAD SILENCE is based on Jeffery Deavers' excellent "A Maiden's Grave," and as is in most instances, the book is better than the movie. But to screenwriter Donald Stewart's credit, his script maintains much of Deavers' plotting and nuances to be a credible adaptation.
A busload of deaf mute students is held hostage by a notorious bankrobber, played with effective and cold mania by the underrated Kim Coates. The schoolteacher (Marlee Matlin) is heroic in trying to come up with ways to get her kids out of this mess. But FBI negotiator John Potter (played with controlled excellence by the ever dependable James Garner) has his own way of dealing with the hostage situation.
There are some nifty plot twists (a norm for the crafty Deavers) and the cast plays them out well. Director Daniel J. Petrie, Jr., focuses on the characterizations with minimal over-wrought histrionics. Charles Martin Smith plays the swarmy assistant attorney general; Scott Speedman in an early role plays the heroic Stevie; and Lolita Davidovich comes on late as a hostage negotiator who has had her turn with Coates.
A sharp, intelligent thriller.

3 out of 5 stars Dead Silence.......2003-06-29

After escaping from prison and crashing their car, three psychopathic killers hi-jack a bus full of deaf children and their teacher and take them hostage in a slaughter-house. The FBI arrive at the scene and it's up to the tired cheif (James Garner) to negotiate with the criminals over a cell-phone.

Although it begins promisingly, the comunication between Garner and the criminals becomes tedious after some time, and the action doesn't pick up until the lone twist is reveiled. Lack of surprises and action doesn't help either. Garner is good in the role he plays.

If you like this film, I also recommend "The Taking Of Pelem 123".

Overall: 3 stars

Rated R for some graphic violence, language, and explicit sexual dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars James Garner is priceless!.......2003-03-31

James Garner is priceless in this movie! It was hilarious to see some of those 4-letter words coming out of his mouth! My husband & I got the biggest kick out watching him in this role and the movie itself was really good. We enjoyed it and I am waiting for it to come out on DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Let's see if we can get this straight guys.......2007-04-11

I know I'm just as guilty, and believe me I paid for it a long time ago; well 18 years ago is more like it. What I'm talking about is the fact that a poor girl was the victim of a creul joke. I know what all you guys are thinking: "It's only a joke; she should just get over it....WRONG!!!!" I know this one girl in school who was called every name in the book because she always had a boy's haircut, and she was tall and skinny, and was told she reeked. I saw her 8 years later at the age of 20, and she was good looking, but it was a couple of days before she was to marry. I know that I regret not having been more of a friend to her when I knew her. The first relevant scene is where the main character is 12, and she goes to her first dance, and is humilated by a drawing of her masturbating, and this was shown by a boy who she had a crush on, and 5 years later she's looking rather hot, and the boy starts to notice her, and wants her, so she takes him down to the boat dock, and tries to get him in a boat, so they could do some extremely heavy petting. She does a masturbating ritual to get him going before she dives off into the water, but the boy ends up falling in, and is drowned because he's obviously afraid of water, and can't swim. This is the actual meat of this slop, and I do mean slop. Two scenes, and that's all. The rest is all crap in which it has the girl trying to cover up, and make it sound like the boy ran away, and it just has all the makings of a Lifetime movie loser. It just has alot of stupid things in here that just drug the movie through the muddy water that the girl loved to swim in. This film however, did teach me one thing, and that's the importance of remembering the old song from that television show "The Electric Company" where it has the boy and girl doing the old ditty "That's what little girls are made of", and they start taking shots at each other, and finally cooler heads have to prevail, and the song becomes "What little boys and girls are made of". I feel that the latest commercial about teaching little boys not to begin hitting girls is very relevant, but I feel that it also needs to go even further to where we teach the little boys to treat little girls respectfully, and that way we can keep trashy movies like this from seeing the light of day.

3 out of 5 stars WACKY WILBUR FALLS.......2006-07-05

DEAD SILENCE (original title: Wilbur Falls) is one of those movies that doesn't seem to know if it's a comedy or a drama, but it's unique enough to entertain in an odd sort of way. Shanee Edwards plays Renata, a high school valedictorian who leads us back to four years earlier and a nasty stunt played on her by her high school comrades. Four years later it leads her to plot revenge against the jock (Charlie Newmark) which leads to his accidental death. She tries to cover it up, with the help of her best friend. Meanwhile the jock's girlfriend Jodie is pregnant and asks Renata to help her get an abortion, which leads them to Renata's older sister who is involved with a second rate gangster named Johnny Handsome. It all gets pretty strange with some bizarre twists. Danny Aiello plays her father, a former cop who is married to spiritually inclined Sally Kirkland. David Anthony Marshall plays Aiello's replacement, a redneck kind of sheriff who never buttons his shirt. They all do well with Edwards very effective in her complex role. Not a great film but enjoyable.

Although this would not be my ultimate set it is a very good one. Up front let me say I have not bought this set but was wondering about it. I took a close look and saw that I have most these movies and have seen the rest. If you don't already own these movies it is a great buy. If you figure the movies are worth at least ten dollars a piece you can see that you are certainly getting your moneys worth. Some are down right excellent movies and others aren't bad. I don't recall a one in the bunch being a stinker so you can't go wrong. I recommend it to anyone that is just getting their DVD library started. The set includes "Silence of the Lambs", "Misery", "Fargo", "Manhunter", "Hannibal", "Kalifornia", "Eye of the Needle", "House of Games", "Gangster No. 1", "The January Man", "Malice", "Perfect Strangers", "Special Effects", and "Dead Man Walking". Check the individual reviews on these and you will see it is a good set. The only movie I wasn't impressed with was "Special Effects".

Billy in Dead Silence inevitably recalls other possessed dolls such as those in Devil Doll, but he is an entertaining dummy nonetheless. As a variation on evil-doll films like Child's Play or Puppet Master, Dead Silence stars a dummy who isn't a killer himself but a vehicle for a vengeful ghost. Previously owned by Mary Shaw, a ventiloquist who was murdered by local Ravens Hill villagers for kidnapping a boy to turn him into a human puppet, Billy houses Mary Shaw's spirit while she gets revenge on all those who killed her. Jamie Ashen (Ryan Kwanten) unravels Billy's mystery after Billy is delivered to his door to claim Jamie's wife's life, since she is pregnant with Jamie's son. Mary Shaw aims to obliterate his entire Ashen clan, since they were partially responsible for her death. Plot, from there, teeters on the ridiculous, as Mary (via Billy) rips peoples tongues out left and right. Jamie's futile attempts to stop Shaw's ghost result in his discovering a gruesome secret about his brutal, abusive father. Writer Leigh Whannell and director James Wan, of Saw, made this almost comical film about 101 dummies, all relatives of Billy's, who are slaves to their sadistic creator. With many direct references to '80s horror films, and a soundtrack theme song almost exactly like Phantasm's, Dead Silence's charm banks on its lack of computer-y special effects rather than its originality. Billy's sly violence is creepy but funny, making for a relatively lighthearted horror film that won't traumatize as much as it makes one chuckle. —Trinie Dalton

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-09-09

This movie was great. I would like to thank the writer and director for putting together a true horror film. The story unfolds very carefully, but it will continue to keep your attention.

    4 out of 5 stars Going Against The Grain . . .......2007-05-08

I'm going to go against the grain with this one. I found DEAD SILENCE to be an enjoyable movie. Sure it's done by the same guys that brought us the 'SAW' trilogy, but here they're showing us that they have versitility. I really liked the gray wash on this movie, and I had read that it was a tribute to the Hammer films. Now the film did have a little suspense, but did anyone expect the ending of it?

2 out of 5 stars GO TO ANOTHER MOVIE INSTEAD!.......2007-04-23

DEAD SILENCE WAS A VERY SLOW AND BORING MOVIE WHICH WASTES THE TALENTS OF ALL INVOLVED! MAYBE WORTH A RENTAL...BUT NOT WORTH A THEATRICAL VIEWING!
I BELIEVE THAT WITH A LITTLE WORK,HOWEVER, THE FILM COULD HAVE BEEN GOOD!
IT'S OBVIOUS THAT THE FILMMAKER'S HAD NOTHING BETTER TO DO!

    2 out of 5 stars Just bad........2007-04-12

This movie is irritating as soon as it begins. The tacky post-production looks like something a highschool student who just learned how to use filters would do to make their movie look "cool." The stop-motion and excessive use of very unrealistic "old-movie" grain overlays in the introductory credits and in transition scenes throughout the movie draws attention to itself in a way that completely distracts from anything they're actually showing on screen, and makes the images themselves more abstract and much less scary. The fifteen-year-old who edited this REALLY needs to learn some restraint.

Aside from that, the plot really isn't worth commenting on. It's filled with holes, and the ending defies the little logic that was there.

A few of the scenes of the dummies, particularly the ones set in the past, are genuinely creepy. That's pretty much the extent to which this movie is any good.

3 out of 5 stars Slick Style Ghost Story !!!!! ( I am not a child just easier to do reviews).......2007-04-05

I must say i really enjoyed this movie and found that it held my attention for the 90 so mintues of running time - which in my books is enough to give the film 3 stars.

I am sick of hearing people state that this " isn't like SAW" or "this proves that SAW was a fluke". I mean it's a different movie and to be honest there are enough SAW movies that i didn't feel like watching a clone (though SAW 4 is stupidly on it's way - leave it with 3).

With the perfomance: I live in Australia so most of us will remember the main male charater as Vinnie from a series here called Home and Away. I have to say he was bland in his performance on that show and he was bland in this. His reaction to some of the going -ons around him such as his wife being brutally murdered didn't click but maybe the directors were looking for a somber performance and not a dramantic performance and blame can be centred on them for not providing the actor with some range.

But then as i alluded to - he was crap on Home and Away too.

You would think if your partner was murdered in a ghastly way you would react for some weeks after (maybe he had post-tramatic stress). As others have said, the imagery in this film was great and the backstory of the villan Mary Shaw was a highlight (this woman is damn creepy). I did enjoy Donnie Walburg's performance but i can't help but feel that if i am identifying him as the best actor in this then it shows how woeful the other's were.

The movie has been promoted as more of a killer doll movie but it isn't. The main villan is a ghost not a doll. She just uses the doll to keep herself from slipping into the afterlife for good. She needs an instrument to hold her in the real world and that just happens to be the 101 dolls she created (her children). So don't expect any doll massacre action cause it's not there. Infact i would say the dolls don't kill anything they just allow the sprirt of Mary Shaw to come through.

The movie did remind me alot of Darkness Falls, which i will go on record as saying is damn good though most people hate it. Personally i feel that Darkness Falls is a little more superiour than Dead Silence but Dead Silence has a more Hollywood feel to it which some like.

Have to say the sound dropping out (hence Dead Silence) whenever there is going to be some supernatural mayhem was good and quite effective and the lavish scenery suited this type of gothic like ghost story.

Overall, Dead Silence is a decent little horror flick more in the style of a suspense ghost tale than an action packed horror film with gore. If you go in thinking SAW, you are gunna be disappointed. Enjoy it for what it is, a decent yarn and a entertaining 90 minutes. The movie really is quite tame.

I will be buying this on DVD simply cause i love horror movies and like the backstory of Mary Shaw and the fairytale like quality of both the scenery and overall feel of the film. For most though, it's a rental at the most.
