El Topo's surrealism is more slapstick than Jodorwosky's brilliant follow-up, Holy Mountain, making it more akin to a spaghetti western than a psychedelic journey through the subconscious. The director stars as the gunfighter, El Topo (The Mole), who first gives his 7-year old son (played by real life son, Brontis Jodorowsky) a glimpse of manhood in the form of weaponry, then abandons him for a horseback revenge trip focused on a heartless team of raping, pillaging bandits. Along the way, he meets Mara (Mara Lorenzio), whose tough love encourages him to become a monk. On El Topo's new quest, he encounters spiritual leaders and endures a series of personal realizations about his past violence. Absurd moments, such as when the viewer first encounters the bandits sniffing and drooling over high-heeled women's shoes out in the desert, make El Topo satirically wry. Brutal scenes in which rivers of blood run through towns, or people slaughter each other in firing lines, remind the viewer of Mexico's bloody history. The mixture of ironic humor and violence in El Topo encapsulates Jodorowky's vision of a world in which reality and the imagination are fused, yet completely separate. This paradox, of great thematic concern in all of Jodorowsky's films, is most resonant in El Topo when Mara and The Mole sadistically communicate with whips, guns, and knives. As Holy Mountain's religious message centers wholly around The Alchemist's transformation of Jesus, El Topo introduces love between man and woman into the symbolic mix, compensating for the divine settings and imaginative characters that elucidate the protagonist's enlightenment in the later Holy Mountain. Only by viewing the two films as a double feature will one get the full power of Jodorowsky's Buddhist message, one of self-sacrifice and suffering towards a greater end. --Trinie Dalton

incredible set. I had the priviledge of seeing El Topo and The Holy Mountain on the big screen prior to the dvd release and it really changed how i look at film. its hard to describe the power these films have but if you let them wash over you they will truly move you. ive tried showing these to some of my friends and they get confused and grossed out so this is definately not for everyone. but if you area cinema enthusiast these could change your life. the dvds are very nice video quality considering how these films were unseen for many years in america. el cravate and fando y lis are intereting though not up to the standard of el topo and the holy mountain but very nice to have them here. the commentaries are great to listen too Alejandro is a very interesting man and i look forward to his next project.

I pre-ordered this whole set and have watched the short film,half of fando y liz,and all of el topo and the holy mountain:film-making at it's best! there are a few errors in editing,but that's small beans compared to everything else you get in visuals and thoughts.my only gripe is that with both el topo and the holy mountain the dvds had digital blips from manufacturing(the discs are 100% scratchless and I have a high-end regular dvd player)at a few points.with any normal movie this would be fine,but when a film is art such as these,the viewer is usually more discerning.still great,but I wish they would've done a better job at checking production.

You could literally analyze and put your own meaning on this movie. Amazon tells you what it's about adequately in it's review but what is the film saying? In Roger Ebert's 4 star review he says the movie leaves you with two impulses. "One is to accept it on its own terms, as a complex fantasy that uses violence as the most convenient cinematic shorthand for human power relationships. The other is to reject it as the work of a cynic, who is simply supplying more jolts and shocks per minute than most filmmakers." He goes with the first one.
I'm going to skip for a moment analyzing this film for hidden meanings and let you know what you will see.
Extreme violence, religious references- Christianity, Zen, black magic, disembowelments, torture, genocide, nudity, sadomasochistic behavior, deformed and incestuously mutated cripples, hangings, suicide, a blind gunfighter, a cripple with no legs that piggy backs a cripple with no arms, sex, lesbianism, slavery, lots and lots of bright red blood, landscapes, boilings, rape, and some Russian roulette to name just some of what you will see. All that and this is a Western, although i would say by the way of Space Odyssey 2001.
As i said in the title this is for the open minded who want to see something they've never seen something deep and far out there.
So back to the hidden meanings and interpretations, I had some while watching now I'm not so sure you can get to one by watching this just once. Is this art or is it exploitation? What was this movie trying to say to you? I'd love to hear your thoughts and help analyzing this one. I've also seen The Holy Mountain, again I feel that is another I'd need to see again.

I have been a garage sale shopper for YEARS, but this DVD taught me how to shop in a whole new way. I have many works by Lynn Dralle. She is a sharp, savvy, business women and shares all her techniques through her books, dvd, seminars, etc. She appears to be extremely hard working and if you follow her instructional materials you can't help but achieve success. At first glance you think the video is amateurish - thats at first glance. After a few moments you are involved with Lynn's garage saling. You get to see what she buys and why. Then she shows how to do the research before listing her items to get maximum bids. It's awesome. It's like walking along with a friend to learn the ropes.

I hesitated to buy this because of some of the negative reviews posted here and because I'm not a beginner on eBay, but the price was so reasonable I thought "why not?". I'm so glad I did! I learned a few things from the valuable tips and enjoyed the way the information was presented. I just bought this video and enjoyed watching Lynn go through the step by step process of buying at Garage sales, listing, and taking photos. With a little knowledge and research of your own making you start learning what to look for when finding ebay treasures. This is a great starter for the new ebay seller.

Midwest meets LA....I enjoyed all the characters and can not wait to see the sequel. The lighting, filming, writing, and direction puts a wonderful, cute, funny, spin on an event that is not any of those things.

Unless you are either A.) in the film, or B.) a friend or family, it is excruciatingly painful to watch the antics of this untalented family on film that would have been better off never being manufactured in the first place. I really had a small amount of hope while viewing that someone would have figured out what entertainment is, but it was spiraling out of control with unresolved characters and poor plot "twists". I beg you to spend you time wiser. stare at the wall.
